We got a fun one coming up before we’ll see if the Cubs can take care of the Padres’s later on today. Right now, it’s all football. CSH Bears. [Music] Get down. Welcome in to a Thursday edition of the show as we get through the by-week. I haven’t been I’ve been abandoned by our entire team. Um, but this is why we have Pat Norton here and we have Katie Duffy on the other side of the wall here, the fourth wall, not a literal wall. Uh, and she’s doing a great job all week long. Pat’s been grinding away at house hall all season, so we thought this was a great opportunity for him to come in and kind of give his thoughts on what’s been going on so far this season. How you doing? Doing great. How are you? I’m good. I’m I’m not as good in the rhythm. Yeah, I’m I’m not as good as uh Greg Braggs apparently is. I know a lot of people are wondering where he is, where Stephen is. We are too. Um we did apparently get some um security cameras inside some place in Las Vegas. Um we’re having secret videos sent to us from people that I think are still, you know, tracking Braggs in Las Vegas, which is very scary. So anyway, this was sent to us. Um, this was apparently last night. I don’t know where it is. Somewhere in Vegas. And I like to think that he missed his flight. He’s He’s actually not supposed to be there. Well, they did announce his name at the gate on Monday. Uh, looking for it. Oh, that’s good. So, he kind of actually technically did miss his flight. That’s good. And he’s just never going to leave Las Vegas. Oh, I saw in the background the D. That was awkward. But that hotel is actually called the D. You can see it there in the top corner. Um that is that’s a a circa Okay. Yeah, it’s a circa property. That’s where we stayed at the the Super Bowl. So, um he’s outside on Fremont Street. Okay. That that’s line dancing, right? That’s what that’s what’s happening there. He’s dancing to the boot scoot and boogie. Well, what he’s doing is not line dancing. What everybody else is doing. Everybody else is dancing to the boot scoot and boogie. Got it. Um anyway, we got a fun show for you today. Car me, our old friend, uh, we’re going to talk to her. Actually, Mark K and I had a chance to pre-record a a lengthy interview with her uh, yesterday. Karm is off today for Yam Kapoor. And, um, we’re going to jump right in with a little bit of Caleb Williams talk off the top. And honestly, Pat, I just I mean, you’ve been in there, you’ve been around the team. I wanted to get your thoughts even before we get to some of this Caleb stuff just on um, what you’ve observed from your reporting. Um, and I should also mention if you don’t subscribe to this guy’s newsletter, we’re all gonna come get you because uh this this guy this man does the best newsletter in town. It’s not even close. It’s all cho.comnews newsletter, right? Yeah. Newsletter. If you just do that, you can sign up. Just give them It’s completely free. You just give it give put your email address in there. Completely free. You’ll get it every morning at 7 o’clock every weekday morning. Um, and it’ll also link out. It’ll have everything that you need to know from Hogue, from John’s, from everybody who’s writing. So, yeah. And most days he is at house hall aside John’s and myself um grinding away. So, what have you uh what have you observed from the Bears first four games? I I think that something that should be mentioned is the fact that Caleb Williams is, you know, we’re talking about his growth on the field. I think there’s an off the- field element to him, too, that that deserves some credit. Uh, and that’s just kind of how he’s handling himself. And and everybody wants to say, okay, well, his press conferences, you know, here’s looking at you, Karm. Oh, sure, he could use PR training. Oh, sometimes it comes across as word salad. But I I I think that really kind of what Caleb has conveyed to us so far this year has all been very meaningful. Um, and even when he’s it almost feels like he’s trying to downplay his own successes, which is to me the mark of a decent quarterback, um, and a decent leader really in that room. Um, Katie, we have a we have a clip where he’s asked about, um, how the book on the Bears so far this season has been, or not this season, but just in general in in history has been their inability to win these close games. um and and what Sunday in Vegas, you know, meant to him and if the team was able to rally around him, if we could play that. I think uh for myself, how did it make me feel? You know, I haven’t been here too long. Um and so I I uh it didn’t it didn’t you know, that’s the history of the Bears. Um, obviously last year we had a couple of those where, you know, we just couldn’t finish the game, whether it was defense stopping them, offense going back out and not scoring or us going down scoring and, you know, whatever the case or or man, however the case may have went. So, um, I’ve been a part of a few of So, um, you know, myself, um, it’s just trying to find ways to help the guys to, you know, have the confidence, have the belief, and, um, I think that, you know, stems from the coach. um obviously you know um his his belief and trust in us that I spoke about after we lost um is still the same if not grown um you know even after the win. So um his his faith his belief his trust in us uh goes a long way um and you know those moments that um those those those nut moments that that showed up in the game um where it was us having to march down the field and go score defense stopping them um at least long enough to get you know a long field goal and then obviously special teams coming on executing a great play. I I think uh Ben Johnson is he said it well. He said it he’s said this a few times now, but you know even sort of as a reset going into the buy. the it it’s nice having Caleb Williams the fourth quarter the twominute drill this the sort of hero ball guy always in your back pocket that you know because that’s the thing we know about him that and that’s the that’s that’s that’s uh Nick Wright talked about this on the show yesterday with us it’s the stuff that you can’t teach things are that great to have that’s not what you have to be working on with Caleb Williams and and so it’s awesome to know that like just look at Sunday didn’t didn’t go well for a lot of that game but when he needed it first of all early third quarter after the takeaway when they finally needed to take advantage of one of those takeaways and not just settle for a field goal he comes out with this ridiculous anticipatory throw to to Roma Dunay over the middle drops it in the bucket insane throw the end zone angle shows it shows it all the 22 angle shows the anticip ation because Rome’s not even come out of his break. So the just the wow moments like that, but also being in that stadium on Sunday, there wasn’t this sense of dread when the Bears are down, they need a drive, even though things have been going well. I’m I’m standing there in the 300 level going, “All right, I I don’t have the doubts they’re going to score. I have the doubts that they’re going to score too soon and the Raiders are going to have a chance to score and win the game, which is actually what ended up happening except the Bears blocked the field goal. Thank goodness. What I’m encouraged by, I I guess me saying all that is because the quarterback has this the talent and the skill to be able to pull out more of these fourth quarter games that have been going the other way. The DJ Moore, we played this for you on yesterday’s show if you missed it, said the same thing. Like while he’s been here, the only other game like that he could recall that they actually won was the 12 to10 victory on Monday Night Football in Minnesota two years ago. It was not a particularly great game. I mean, if you if you want to claim that Sunday’s game in Vegas wasn’t necessarily the prettiest win of all time, well, that one in Minnesota a couple years ago was even uglier. But the reality is in the NFL, you are gonna have games like that no matter how good you are. And so instead of just feeling lucky about it, what I like was that Caleb hung in there even though that wasn’t his prettiest game. I like that the defense hung in there. I like that the offensive line hung in there in a game that they weren’t particularly playing well across the board, but survived against Max Crosby. The defense made the stop when they needed to, and then special teams went out there and and got the big block that they needed. So when Ben Johnson calls it a character win or a culture win, however you want to put it, I think there’s a strong argument that that’s exactly what it was. Right. And there there are two things that kind of stick out to me there. And one of them is throughout the entirety of Matt Eberfloose’s tenure in Chicago. It was about how this team needed to play complimentary football. And it never actually happened. We heard it talked about a lot, but it never actually happened. You’d see it every once in a while. um you’re seeing that four games in in Ben Johnson’s tenure and that’s a very good sign and that’s also the separate or that’s what separates an okay team from a good team or a good team to an even better team are the teams that you know you’re in the game late sure but you have to be able to win those at least occasionally and look looking back at last year’s schedule I mean this schedule is riddled with games that they were in and even had a lead in late or came back in late and had a chance to win and then couldn’t get out of their own way. And it’s why to me Caleb Williams is downplaying his own role in this in that clip by saying, you know, oh well, it’s the it’s the history of the Bears, you know, whatever. And you were a part of this, too. you were a part of this last year in Washington or against Green Bay last year when a blocked field goal went against you or even in Minnesota in overtime the next week and then the week after that is the Thanksgiving Day game and we all know how that went and what came after that. I mean, that that’s a tough stretch of games to overcome. And you could make an argument that they that Caleb put that on tape again at the end of last year against Green Bay in Green Bay. But then week one this year is almost a reversion to that to that backwards or to that backwards thought of, well, you know, they were in it late and then it just kind of slipped away. to me that win in week four whether or not you want to say well shoot Caleb did a lot but he didn’t do enough just because they wouldn’t have won without the Josh Blackwell block but they did win like that that’s a big step for them that’s a big step for him too the Raiders were pretty desperate team too in that game as well so you got to take that to account they were returning home from a bad loss um so there were there were some things going against the Bears I also don’t think the Raiders are an awful football team you know and and they got a pretty good coach over there as Well, all right. I miss you. Greatest after dark show ever. Take that, Greg Braggs. I don’t care what you’re doing on that show when when Yeah, that’s right. It was better when we were doing it. That’s okay. I understand. Management Management has to make tough decisions and and and these things happen, but you know, those were the days they were. I’m kidding. I know you had other board porn things and yada yada and it’s not a competition. It’s all love. Back to you. I look back on those days f I look back on those days fondly. There we go. That’s what I’m talking about. To take people behind behind the scenes as I like to do. Car right before we started the interview. Car goes ahead and ask first question. Hog before I get the first question. Total rant about how his version of a show is better than Bragg’s. I couldn’t help myself. I you know I know I know I live the moment. What? I love it. I love it. All right. Well, let’s actually talk football here, Carmy. Uh that’s why you’re here. Uh not to uh you know rank our shows at CHGO. Um what do you make of the Bears two and two start so far? What do you like? What do you don’t like? I mean, if you would have said to me that they were going to be two and two by the bye-week, I would have been excited. I’d be like, great. Something’s working. Something’s happening there. There’s improvement every week. And I think we’ve seen that. It’s been incremental and there’s still been a ton of stuff that you’re like, “What?” And but that game against the Raiders on the road and coming back and and that that final drive from Caleb Williams, I mean, there’s clearly a belief from the locker room in this team and what and what the system is under Ben Johnson. And it was I’m I’m totally happy with being two and two if I’m a Chicago Bears fan at this very early bye. So along those lines, let’s break down a two and two in a way that it’s never been broken down. Like if you could have started with a win against Minnesota uh in a game that you should have won and just held on and gotten and you know whatever Cairo makes the field goal, the defense holds up, you win that game. Then you lose Detroit. Then you go and and and win the win at home in impressive fashion, but you know, in in a in a game that’s where you’re just playing an opponent that stinks and then you lose on the road. Would that be better or would that be worse? Because I think it’s almost better the way they’ve done it. They were it was awful. The season was over and now they’ve saved the season and we’ve got momentum. First of all, the season was never over after that first Vikings game. The Vikings are a good team. They’ve got a great roster. I mean, they’re very well coached and at that point, I’m I’m a believer in JJ McCarthy. I think he’s in like eventually going to be good. The worst possible thing happens in that he gets injured and it disrupts his progress in this first year starting. But, I mean, that’s a great team. That’s a great defense. And I actually I do agree with you, Carmen, in the sense that I like the way that it’s gone because again, it shows that incremental improvement. It shows that they’re they’re learning along the way and they’re ascending. And I always I think on Marquee especially, I’m always saying like progress isn’t linear and it’s not. And it’s it it’s not necessarily going to keep going up from here. I don’t think I think there’s still going to be a lot of bumps along the way. But when you see that this team is learning every single week and getting better in certain areas every single week, that’s all you wanted to see at this point. I mean, this was a complete overhaul, guys. My one counterpoint would be that I’d like to have the win over an NFC North opponent instead of being 0 and2 in the division. That would be my only counterpoint. But I get what you’re going at in terms of like momentum and I and we’ve talked about this about it being a culture type win for the Bears and I think there is a lot of belief in that. And certainly the locker room I was in on Tuesday um reflected very very very good vibes going into the bye-week. Now, you as a coaching staff, you got to make sure everybody stays locked in uh and gets their things done during the buy and comes back strong. Um but then again, we all know what happened in Washington last year. So, if you don’t come back motivated to beat the Washington Commanders out of the buy, uh well then I guess that the whole idea of a culture win just goes straight out the window. I mean, does it though? That’s the thing. Like, when I’m talking about progress isn’t linear, I mean, Washington is conceivably going to have Jaden Daniels back. They’re a completely different team when he’s under center. And that’s something where if you’re on the road, and I get it, like you want the vengeance from last year and how horribly that went and you want to get that taste out of your mouth. And I think it would go a long way, don’t get me wrong, in winning that game. But I’m not going to say that the entire culture just isn’t there if they don’t win that game. Again, like I think this is and especially you don’t know how these guys are going to come out of the buy. There’s always kind of a adjust an adjustment period when it comes to the head coach learning how to kind of manage the the extra days off, the extra rest, getting the team back going. I mean, honestly, Matt Lafur hasn’t really figured it out yet in Green Bay and he’s had a lot of success up there. So, there’s coaches that need as from a coaching perspective, you need to figure out how to manage that and you don’t always get it right in the very beginning. So, I’m not going to glean a whole lot off of that game. I do think that this game in in in Las Vegas, the way that it went and and the comeback and like again just kind of the weathering the storm, weathering the adversity, all of that kind of stuff, that’s not going to be undone by a loss. And if it is, then you didn’t establish that culture in the first place. So, okay, two things there. You Let me get to Matt Laflur in a second. Let me actually stick with my original question. If you were to I’m creating a new segment here on CHO. called the Carmy V Gold Star Award. So, if you were going to give a gold star to any Chicago Bear for his performance in the first four weeks of the season, not to put you on the spot here, but I’m just going to keep talking while you think about it. Uh, who gets who gets in this inaugural segment on the fly, who gets your gold star? Uh, I think it’s going to be Zakius because of what he’s been to this offense. the way that he’s come in clutch, he’s become a little bit of a safety blanket for Caleb Williams. And that’s not to say like my first instinct was definitely to go Roman Dunay because of the connection that’s clearly there with Caleb, right? And he’s being very he’s very productive. He’s done a lot for this offense. But I think that when you talk about a gold star, it’s like, all right, who’s who’s exceeded expectations? And like my expectations were high for Caleb and Rome. so exceeded expectations like a lot of days a Oz has been really integral to this offense and I don’t know how many people gave him that credit when he was signed to this roster and even though he had such a good camp I mean this is this is a guy that’s now come through on multiple occasions whether it’s third down whether it’s getting you the yards you need to get into field goal range this that the other like he keeps coming up big and I think that veteran presence too goes a long way you just turn that into the unsung sung Chicago Bear Gold Star, which was like a super that was like a car me twist on the on the extravaganza which I which I enjoyed thoroughly. Uh just on the other side of what I wanted to ask because you brought up the Packers. Matt Laflur, what what is do you have a analysis of what’s going on there? Because I mean, you know, one more second on the clock, you lose the game to the Cowboys. I I’m not going to put the Jordan Love interception on him to the Browns, but like Green Bay, the fact that they’re sitting where they’re sitting at the way they started is pretty stunning. It is stunning. It was completely surprising because again, you look at that roster and you look at the system like Jeff Halfley has been the now this is the second year in the Jeff Halfley system. You add Micah Parsons to that and you now have the complement to the way that Jordan Love plays the game. Jordan Love plays with reckless abandon and you don’t want to coach that out of him. What you want to do is have a defense that can survive any of those mistakes that he may make because when those mistakes work out, it puts a defense on its heels. It’s really hard to game plan for the fact that Jordan Love is just absolutely fearless throwing into whatever window he trusts his receivers implicitly. Does it always work out? No. But if you have the defense to back that up and to mitigate the damage, then you’re set. And I was, you know, as soon as they got Michael Parsons, I was like, “Oh my god, this is a Super Bowl contender immediately because there’s so much talent on that roster.” What really shocked me in this game against the Cowboys was just how conservative Matt Laflur was being from a play calling perspective. Honestly, like playing for the tie at the end of that is one thing. Playing for that long field goal at the end to even force overtime, that was an entirely different the the sequence right before that field goal, especially after Brandon Aubrey or not Brandon Aubrey, that’s the other side, but like Brandon McManis after he had gotten that field goal block or the kick blocked right before like at the beginning of the game. I’m like, are you really going to trust him with a 53 yard, whatever it was, that’s not a given in these situations. And to play for that and to mismanage the clock in the timeouts that you had, especially when those teams had been going blow forblow in the fourth quarter, go for the jugular. You have a quarterback who’s willing to do that and can do that. So, why aren’t you putting your foot on their neck and trying to win the game outright right then? That was what just blew me away and it was one of the things that I was ended up like getting worked up about because I’m just like you have a better team than this. You’re treating your team like you don’t trust them and like I like if you’re going to talk about how they’re a Super Bowl contender and how Goody went out and made this gigantic trade with Micah Parsons, the least you can do if you’re Matt Floor is trust that roster. And he just didn’t in that entire game. And I mean like it’s easy for me to say if I were a coach, but like and then in the o in overtime like I would rather play to win the game and then end up losing than play for a tie. I just think that’s so embarrassing. Yeah, I am stunned at how many coaches just sort of settle for these long field goals. And I understand the kicking ball is traveling further this year and everybody’s banging these these really long field goals, but we’re also seeing plenty of them blocked just like the end of the game in in Las Vegas the other day. So, it is kind of stunning. I I got to say though, Car and I I feel like the most people were high in the Packers. I actually was not this year. That was technically before the Parsons trade, but ever the Contrarian Hogue. Yeah. Yeah. I just Well, I’m But I’m confused right now. I’m confused because they look so good early on. Now, the last two weeks, they look more like the team I thought they would be because I just thought it was a roster full of good players, not great players. Obviously, Mike Parson’s great. they did add him. Um, so but I just I don’t know. I mean, are there you you probably are on the inside a little bit more than I am when it comes to Green Bay. Just like are there problems up there? Because I I I thought the Parson’s trade riaked of desperation to be honest with you. And I know that if you followed the off season in Wisconsin, it was there was a lot of pressure. It was it was is Matt Laflur going to actually win here? not just get to the playoffs, but win. Is Jordan Love going to be the guy he was two years ago, not the guy he was last year? There was a lot of pressure. So, I’m just I think that they’re kind of teetering here going in the bye-week. And I can’t figure out which of the two teams they’re going to be going forward. I think they’re going to be the better one. I just I can’t imagine that with that roster. And then, you know, they go out and they like this year was different. There was a lot of pressure on them. That was apparent from the fact that they took a wide receiver in the first round, which they haven’t done in decades. So, that’s something that like I think that there was a very concerted effort to exhaust every single option when it came to what’s going to get us over the hump in Green Bay. And I think that that started with getting an actual wide receiver one. As much as Matt Laflur said he was allergic to that phrase last year, I mean, the Packers, their offense, the strength of their offense is supposed to be the fact that they have so many different options that as a defense, you just can’t game plan for all of them. That’s kind of their mo offensively. And that’s why Matt Lafleur, I think, was saying, I don’t care about having a wide receiver, one this, that, the other. But then when you have a revolving door at receiver because of injury l like they did last year, when you have in multiple injuries to your quarterback, there’s no sort of rhythm that you’re able to get into and there’s no safety hatch. There’s no like latch to just, you know, pull in in emergency if you’re Jordan Love. You don’t have that guy. And so now he seems to be getting there with Matthew Golden. Obviously Romeo Dobs had the three touchdowns in that game against Dallas. And I think that that rapport has gone up significantly. you conceivably have Christian Watson returning at some point soon. So, you’re still gonna have like that that door of receivers and options when it comes to, you know, tight ends, you got Josh Jacobs, you got so many different options on offense. But, I think what’s gotten away from them is the rhythm in in in that like in the process of that, it’s like, all right, well, you still have to have some sort of rhythm. You still have to have Jordan Love building rapport with these guys that when it’s third down and it’s a got to have it and it’s, you know, six yards or more, this is the guy he knows he can go to. He doesn’t really have that yet, but I think that they’re with the health of Jordan Love, hopefully they’ll get there. And again with the defense, I said it a couple weeks ago on my radio show where I was like this team is gonna go the way that the defense goes because that is I be like that’s what I view as being the unit that’s able to get them over the hump because again you have a very reckless quarterback. You have a guy that’s not afraid to t take risks. Whatever risk averse whatever is the opposite of risk averse that’s what Jordan L is. But if you have a defense that can continually get pressure, that can manage those sudden change situations and can limit the amount of points that the opponent is scoring by getting to the opposing quarterback and getting takeaways, which we saw they were able to get those takeaways last year. They can keep that up while getting pressure now that they have Michael Parsons. I mean, this is such a complete team when you think about it that way. So, I can’t imagine that it’s like with more reps, you’re not going to continue to get better and get more settled in. That was a long-winded way of saying that essentially. So, what you’re saying is you still think the Packers are slightly better than the Bears, but you’re not completely ruling out the chance that the Bears are just going to stun everybody and win the North. I I hear it loud and clear. Uh I never I never ruled that that option out. I said any of these teams is completely capable of winning the North this year. I said that verbatim. I ruled that out. Uh but hey, I’m I I would love to be wrong. That’s Let’s see. Two and two. Anything is possible. So, you’re talking about that guy and there’s I’m just getting a lot of texts that people are kind of I you know, you mentioned and and people are excited about Luther and and then Rome’s looking like a wide receiver one and DJ’s not playing at the level that people expect him to. So, a lot of people think trade DJ and go get help for the defense. And one of the ones that’s rumored or the Bears fans are talking about the Giants just lost lost neighbors. They’ve got Kavon Tibido. Why don’t why doesn’t Ryan Ples dial up uh New York and say, “Hey, let’s make a deal here.” Do would you be com Does that make sense to you? One and do you ever think something like that would happen? I mean, I don’t know that it would because I also don’t think that’s the most pressing issues the issue the Bears have right now. I mean, what is going on with the offensive line? The offensive line that we all talked about wanting it to be so much better. I know there’s been injury and all that other stuff. And honestly, Braxton Jones has not been bad through the first four weeks of the season. But I also expect if there’s a change that’s going to be made, it’s going to happen in the in this uh the the by-week. I think Ben Johnson was always kind of eyeing the the by-week as a potential time to make a change when it comes to the offensive line because that just hasn’t been there as much. That’s I think a huge reason why that the run game hasn’t gotten up to what Ben Johnson wanted to. that and not having necessarily the horses in the backfield that he necessarily wants when it comes to running backs. But I mean, with the defensive line, I I feel like you have to give them more time. I I think that like again, Dennis Allen scheme is drastically different than Matty Roose, even though when you’re talking about base defenses, it was, you know, it’s very similar in that regard. But when it comes to playing that man coverage on the back end and then that requiring the pressure to be there up front and it hasn’t necessarily been there, he’s found kind of different ways to make the like to make that happen to like those blitz packages and stuff like that are not just necessarily the guy that’s blitzing isn’t necessarily coming from the front. And I think that that was a huge criticism last year under Matt Everloose where it was like you have to get pressure with four and even if you blitz you’re not doing it creatively enough. Dennis Allen, that’s not Dennis Allen. I trust Dennis Allen to kind of figure that out even if he doesn’t necessarily have everything he wants up front. Um, but I mean at this point you do have an embarrassment of riches at receiver. So is if I think it’s more likely that they end up may maybe they do explore trade options with with DJ Moore just be given the fact that they have an embarrassment of riches. I just don’t know who it would necessarily be for because I still think I see other holes on this roster. Also, these same people want the Bears to trade for a running back. DJ Moore’s one of your running backs. Yeah, that’s true. So, it I I just I don’t think people really understand how much DJ Moore is still doing out there in terms of matchups, creating matchups, how much it’s allowing Roma Dun and your gold star winner Zakias to get open on third down all the time. And receivers have to block in this offense. like receivers are like constantly blocking and that’s a huge part of this whether it’s like on a run play or if it is you know in pass protection these guys are doing a lot of the dirty work when it comes to that scheme. Yeah. And for the record I don’t think DJ’s going anywhere but it’s just it’s out. It’s being floated so it’s a by week. We’ll float it here. Yeah. All right. Well well let’s float this. All right. Um Krie what is your best and worst case scenario for the Chicago Bears the rest of the season after the by-week? Uh, best case scenario is that they all right like let me preface this by saying for the division I don’t think it’s going to take 15 wins to win this division again. I’ve said that going into this year and I still firmly believe that just given the fact that this is a very very good division. This division is what we thought we it was even with Carson Wentz starting for the Minnesota Vikings under center and the Packers sitting it with a tie in their record. Like this is still a really tough division. These teams are inevitably going to cannibalize each other. So, I just don’t think that it’s going to take 15 wins to get there. And if it does only take 12 wins to win this division, there are like that that’s still in play for every single one of these teams, including the Chicago Bears. So, if you’re asking me what the best case scenario is, is that the Bears win the division like that that absolutely is still in play here. And it’s again, every team in this division is capable of getting to that 12 win mark if that is indeed what it takes to win. Now, the Lions are who we thought they were. I always thought this was their division to lose, even with them kind of, you know, getting off to a rocky start. That’s to be expected when you had a coaching exodus in the way that they did. Um, nobody is completely immune to that kind of attrition. But now, I mean, I like they could very much run away with a division, but also like Detroit, if you if there’s a criticism of Detroit, it’s their death. And so, they’re still like they’re probably one or two injuries away from really struggling. and that’s something that opens the door for the rest of these teams. So yeah, Bears winning the division is still the is is the best case scenario. The worst case scenario um is not getting close to like I’m going to be happy with the Chicago Bears if they go eight and nine this season. That’s successful for me in the first year for the amount of overhaul that they did and the way that I think Ben Johnson still wants to kind of remake parts of this roster as his tenure goes on. I’m happy with eight wins. I’m happy anywhere close to 500. If the Bears repeat their record from last year and only end up winning, you know, three more of these games down the stretch, that’s horrendous and that is going to be really deflating for this franchise. Yeah, I think that that would be I don’t want to say that’s off the table, but that would be surprising at this point. I will say surprising, but it’s not off the table, right? Seven or eight wins to me would have to come with the caveat though that you feel really good about Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams going into next season. Like there’s there’s and maybe there’s still some doubts. Maybe there’s still like, you know, it’s not completely set in stone, but you got to at least come out of the season and that sack numbers cut in half, which right now it’s well on the way to being, which is a which is a really good development from the first four four weeks. and that that critical um EPA per drop back stat that Ben Johnson’s paying attention to. You know, you’re you’re doing well in that area, too. And you feel good about I keep trying to ask guys in the locker room and so far nobody’s like cop to it, but I’m like, is there like are you guys more aware of the numbers right now? Are you more aware of the analytics? Like is there more of an emphasis on analytics on this staff than there was before? cuz like I can’t imagine that Ben Johnson is that aware of it and then the rest of the team isn’t. You know what I mean? I just think that but I’m with you. Like if that that needs to be trending upward and you need to not see Ben Johnson distancing himself from Caleb Williams by the end of this season, no matter what the record is. I I don’t want to talk too out of turn here, but my guess is that they’re not overly aware of EPA in that locker room by the way I experienced that locker room. But you never know. You never I mean, if you’re having if you’re having team meetings and Ben Johnson is putting those numbers up, like which I don’t I don’t think is out of the question. Like, if he’s that aware of it, like I have to imagine that that’s like trickling down in some way, shape, or form, but nobody’s cop to it yet. That’s possible. I’m sure Scott Daly knows the EPA without without any doubt whatsoever. There’s there’s guys in there that do for sure. Well, he’s on top of it. I actually reminded me I forgot maybe I can look this up while we’re still talking, but Ben Johnson brought up that stat at the beginning of the season. Well, at the owner’s meetings when we were talking to him, he said that EPA per pass is now uh your your passing EPA is now more indicative of winning and losing a football game than turnovers are. And I got through week two, week three, week four last night and then I kind of got tired so I never got back around to week one. But I’m pretty sure to this point that that has correlated with the Bears wins and losses so far. I wouldn’t be surprised. Last week it definitely did. I’m just not totally sure about week one because that was a weird game where JJ McCarthy was actually horrendous for three quarters and somehow was the NFC offensive player of the week despite throwing a pick six. How’s this? Here’s my EPA. Theo Bennett takes hold of the left tackle position and plays it well and Caleb has time. Your EPA is going to look damn good. I’ll be paying attention to my guy in the robe. I you weren’t there on Sunday in in Vegas car, but he you know I asked him to put a t-shirt on. He just put on this terry cloth robe benadet and I’m like this is my guy. Dudes busting out terry cloth robes talking talking to the media. That’s my left hand. Is it a Is that a Canadian thing? I don’t know. I I mean they all have one but I don’t I’ve never seen anybody wear one. So that’s true. I mean that was just I’m a big robe girl. So I appreciate that coming for me like like a hotel robes. H that’s my favorite thing. He gave I asked him about the robe. He gave Tony Medlin credit for the robe. Yes. I heard that all of them got it because it’s like some partnership that the Bears have. So, all of them got these robes, but if you use it or not. Hog was holding that in his in his Hog holster. I didn’t know you talked to Medlin about the robes. That’s amazing. I didn’t talk to Tony. I talked to Theo. I I I made sure Theo knew we played his interview with him in the robe and that the fans loved it, which they did. We love a robe. Yeah, we love a robe. We do love a I’d like a good robe. I used to, believe it or not, uh I don’t think I’ve worn a robe in like 20 years, but uh I would I would I would go Theo Bennett robe in my college house at Wisconsin. I do have a nice robe and they would uh they’d rip me for it, so I just leaned into it harder. It’s great. All right. Uh we have to take another timeout real quick. We’ll come back though. We got some more locker room sound. We’re going to hear from TJ Edwards, who I think is coming back after the buy. Big boost for the Bears defense coming your way. That would be a great perk. That could be our next like die hard upgrade. You want trips or do you want robes? I want robes. The ro Everybody comes to Vegas gets a robe. Oh yeah, that’d be sweet. Bo Chanton saying Hog wears a house robe while drinking his oldfashions. I do not because I don’t currently own a robe. But I spent the last two minutes in that break thinking about how I should buy a robe and do exactly what you just said. I think that’s a great idea, Eric. By the way, if you want to become a diehard, now is a great time to do it. We got the opportunity for the And I don’t know how he already got it. I just I just saw Sean walking around with the CHDO script die hard hat that we we got going on right now. Mine’s out for delivery right now. Oh, let’s go. I might have forgotten to order that now that I think about it. We had a short window there. I’ve got a pretty big head. It might be yours. Yeah. So, um, anyway, the hat is awesome and you can get it right now. Uh, if you are not a die hard, great opportunity. You upgrade to the $59 level and you get the awesome Brandon Bills CHO script hat right now. Uh, otherwise the $36 level, you still get your free t-shirt. And if you’re already a diehard, you can just use your 20% discount that you always get forever and buy the hat, which is a great thing to do, too. So, there’s a we got you covered and uh some great diehard content available for you right now, including our insider analysis column from Johnzy and myself. Or if you clicked on it before 8 a.m. yesterday, it was from me. It Yes, that’s right. Pat did write until it was 8:00, then we wrote it. Yep. Yep. Yep. It’s, you know, it was a slick move by you. I just wanted some credit. It went by me. John’s was like, “Put my damn name on the story.” And that’s how he said it, too. It is. Um All right. We have some more locker room sound to share with you from Tuesday. TJ Edwards seems poised for a comeback. He was out there on the practice field on Tuesday. Now, Tuesday wasn’t the most grueling football practice you’ll ever see in your life. Um, I shouldn’t say that. My eyes weren’t even out there. Yours were cuz I got there a little bit late. They were just no pads, sort of chilling. Lot just a lot of stretching. Yeah. Just just leave it to these two guys to derail. All right, we will let you guys come in, but Stephen, I want you to know as the executive producer of this show that when we’re late for our 47 minute mark break that you get to be the one that explains it to Brandon Spano. Um, but yes, apparently we are Stephen and Greg Braggs are are hijacking the show. It appears live from Circus Swim. How we doing, guys? How’s work? It’s great. Great. I love it here. It’s great. You know, they got rid of You guys look great. We miss you. We do. We are coming back. We can promise. We’re coming back. Miss them. I know you miss us desperately. No, we’re good. Yeah, we’re fine. We’re never leaving. We’re never leaving. I see. I see. Did you guys see the graphics we had on yesterday’s show? They were outstanding. They were Katie’s doing an excellent job over there. I got to say she’s doing You’re fired. Oh, she said you’re fired. She has that power now. You forfeit. You’re not here to fight it. I heard Karm say the other day I was getting Wall-E pipped and I might be in some trouble here actually. Yeah. No, we love She’s amazing. But yes, we are last day here at Circa. It has been unbelievable. The people here are incredible as you guys all know. They’ve been partners with us for quite some time and they couldn’t be more accommodating. Obviously, we got the Chicago Cubs uh you know, elimination game in just a couple hours. There’s already a bunch of Cubs fans in the pool and uh certainly wanted to come on and shout out Circa for everything they’ve done for us, not just this week, but the last few years here with CHO Sports. Yeah, it’s awesome. I will say this. I will say this. I was I was actually ready to come home on Monday. My body can only handle so many days of Vegas. I am very impressed that you guys are still there and somehow alive. But the fact that you are joining the show from Stadium Swim, I am incredibly jealous of because we were supposed to be there last Friday. Our flight got diverted to LA. We never made it and and I had it’s a you know huge upset. I have actually still never actually been I’ve been to Circa. I have not been to Stadium Swim and uh I am I might actually just get on a plane after the show and come meet you. Well, you should. Well, to nobody’s surprise, but the word on the street is couple more years the Super Bowl will be back here. So, don’t worry, Hog, we’re going to get here sooner or later. I’m pretty sure the Bears play the Raiders there in two years, right? Yep. Coming back. Yeah. Now, we’re definitely not going to leave. Well, if it goes anything like the last Bears Raiders game at Las Vegas, I’ll be here for two more weeks after that one. All right, guys. Before we let you before we just wanted to acknowledge something. This is Katie’s last day over at CHDO and she’s been an absolute rock for us. Uh she took that CHDO bull show. It’s tomorrow actually. So just correct yourself right there. It’s tomorrow. All right. Well, I don’t know this guy. In fairness, Stephen doesn’t know what day is. Stephen doesn’t know what day. He doesn’t know where he is. I’m surprised he knows my name. Happy November to Stephen. Well, today is Katie’s second to last day at CHGO. We’re going to get it back on track there. And you know, Katie’s been doing an excellent job, not just filling in for me, but CHO Bulls, that show has gone to another level with you producing it. And I know you’re going on to some really big things. We’re really excited for you. Really proud of you, and uh really excited to see what’s next. I mean, from the day that you got here, uh, no one hit the ground running faster than you did as a producer, myself included. Katie, you really brought out the mustard. Take it from the guy and hate you. Love you, guys. Thank you. We We No, seriously, we love you, Katie. and uh just the way you’ve worked this week in your last week is a testament to the you know the work ethic that you have and the character that you have and we love you very much. You will always have our support and um you know obviously you’re going to be always doing big things, but we were proud to call you a teammate here while you were with us. We’re lucky to have you. Katie’s the best. The good news is I’m not letting her leave, so she’ll still be here on Monday. Um boy Hog. Yep. Absolutely. Um, hey, Motor Music Mike wants his refund from the Cabana last week. So, while you’re there, why don’t you go ahead and get that for his cabana is still If he still has his cabana on tap, we’ll take it today. Go use it. Go. Yeah, maybe you could at least get a rain check and and you guys could use it today. That would be good. You never We’ll get that worked out. But, uh, yeah. No, having a great time here. Once again, shout out to Circa Sports. Obviously, this ca casino is second to none. They have so many great things to offer. If you’ve never been here from the stadium swim, they got a legacy club at the top of the roof with a cigar bar. They got restaurants, obviously the sports book inside. It’s amazing. Right here on Fremont Street. So, if you’re ever coming to Las Vegas, you got to stay here because we’ve stayed at a few different uh casinos and hotels here in Las Vegas, but this one is honestly a step above the rest. There is no better experience than Stadium Swim over here. That that bar none, this is the best spot to be right now. That’s awesome. All right. Uh, thank you guys. For the love of I think I speak for everybody watching. Uh, for the love of God, please button up at least one more of those buttons on that jersey. I’ll leave you. I’ll leave you with this, Stephen. Oh, no. He’s going to go with the No, no, no, no, no, no, no. At least he’s still got the shorts on. I was worried. That does look amazing. Oh my god, that was so unathletic. That was unbelievable. All right, guys. We love you. See you back home on Monday. All right, guys. We’ll be back next week. Looking forward to it. I’m taking all of next week off. I just decided. All right. Um, thank you, Stephen. We’ll see you. We got to get our last break of the show in. We’re going to come back. Uh, we will, if you have any super chats, we’ll address those on the other side of the break, too. Got uh Theo Benedict as well. We’ll share with you. Don’t go anywhere. Uh we’re going to have you covered with all of that coming up 4:00. We got a live watch along with our CHO Cubs team. And postgame as soon as the game is over. It’s the only place to be. For those uh I like how there’s people in the chat wondering who that guy was. That’s Stephen. I know his face isn’t on camera all the time, but that’s our producer. I thought I thought that they were talking about me. I think they’re talking about Yeah, I’m never here. Oh, I thought, right, I guess that makes more sense. Sorry. Everybody knows Stephen. Um, as well as all, you know, other bear stories that you see on our website. Go on allsecow.com/newsletter. Go sign up. And he does all basically does everything. He does all the shows. I think we should also put up that comment from Barbara who is uh of course the the best member of the Braggs family. Um good luck Katie. Greg is always saying what an asset you were to the team at CHO. Best of luck always. Keep in touch. Barb Greg’s mom. She she’s my favorite. And then well, I’m trying not to get emotional, but I appreciate it. Jenny or Amarb, they they get a lot of credit for putting up with Braggs. Greg’s down here. Addie’s up there, too. In essence, this company is really just daycare for Braggs. It’s a great point. CHO is the ow lot of money. Adults, daycare payments. That’s awesome. All right, I mentioned that Theo Bennett sound. One last thing to bring you from the locker room um before I Well, we still have one more show, but this is this is literally it. That’s all we got left um before we go into uh I guess we’re calling it the by weekend now. Um but yes, Theo Bennett talking about his first start in the NFL and what sounds like just the first of what could be many because he might be starting a left tackle in Washington on Monday Night Football in about a week and a half. Um, so here is the conversation with Theo Benedict inside the Bears locker room on Tuesday. Fundamentals, footwork, uh, pad level, hand placement. It’s all those things. I mean, we see that kind of rearing its head on film and and we’re we’re frustrated about it as players cuz coach Roshar and coach Johnson do such a good job of hammering that into us every day, staying honest about all those things. So when you get in a game and they don’t translate, yeah, it’s it’s frustrating to watch yourself, but it’s motivating and and now obviously we have a few practices to kind of get back to what we’ve been doing during the year. Thank you. How much was the u the amount of batted balls on Sunday? Like how much did that get addressed uh with you guys after the game in terms of what you guys can do about all that, whatever control you have? Yeah, I mean it’s a lot of that is just about getting hands-on guys cuz cuz even if you’re in good position and and frankly a lot of some of that’s just bad luck obviously wrong place, wrong time, but with a player like Crosby, you know, you got to expect that. That’s something he’s really good at. Uh he’s getting his hands up. So staying square, keeping our slide integrity so we don’t end up on different levels and allow him to kind of operate in some space um can make it easier on us to keep his hands down. So, as you go into this buy, are you feeling I mean, I know I know you said it multiple times, it wasn’t the the most perfect start, but are you still feeling good about what you learned, what you got out of that game, that tough match up going forward, that you can keep doing this whether it’s on the right side or left side? Thousand% like I said, a lot of like almost reminders about that I can’t let my technique slip and these kind of blocks and that I can’t get away with, you know, having a step that’s not what it needs to be because, you know, especially at this level playing against, you know, the top defenses, they’ll make you pay. Thanks. Yeah. What a great story it is. And the secondary story about how that cut on his nose is never going to go away. Yeah. The JJ Watt cut I call it. Yeah. He said he even joked he’s like, “I might just cut it open for the next game cuz someone asked him if it would heal over the by-week.” He’s like, “Maybe, maybe I’ll just cut it open.” He had a band-aid on it the other day. That’s the first time that I’ve seen I think he wears the band-aid when he’s actually wearing the helmet because otherwise that would just probably just constantly bleed, right? But yeah, I I don’t think it ever heals. It’s a badge of honor for him. I think Canadian and Wisconsin type thing. I I think I like that’s what they’re doing. Theo at left tackle, right? It is It would be very tempting. I thought Azie played well when he went in there at right tackle and it would be tempting to be like all right Azie you play right tackle Darnell you’re going to left on the other hand we don’t even know that Darnell’s back going to be back that’s the thing he wasn’t at practice on Tuesday there are no injury reports during the bye-week so we don’t know um what what was so stunning to me about the Darnell one too was we didn’t really know what the injury was until the injury report came out cuz it looked like they were working on his hand on the sideline and then they wrapped his elbow eventually and then they took the wrap off of his elbow but the elbow’s what’s lingering. So yeah, see it looked to me like he just hyperextended that elbow. So I think that’s what’s going on. Um, well, they got to get it figured out, but I do think you feel better about Theo Bennett and Azie Jillo at least a little bit after seeing what they did in Las Vegas. So, we’ll see how that all gets sorted out after the buy. Um, Katie, where we are at timing right now? I can’t see the Oh, there we go. I think it’s time to end the show, it looks like. All right. Hey, um, appreciate everybody watching, listening. Fun having Car on. Appreciate you coming in, Pat, as well. Thanks for having me. Uh, always good to have you in here. Uh, make sure you check out Bet 365. Use that code CHO365. Cubs watch along happening at 4:00. Huge game. Hopefully the Cubs get it done. They’ll be having fun on the post game as soon as it is over. It’s the only place to be. Hit that like button on the way out. Make sure you’re subscribed. We will talk to you tomorrow. Mark Carman and I will be back for one more Bear Show this week. It’ll be happening at 100 p.m. Central time. and we’ll take you into the bye-week and maybe preview some games even though the Bears aren’t playing. We’ll talk to you tomorrow.
