Steelers News: Jalen Ramsey Injury Update, TRADE For A.J. Brown? + Start Nick Herbig Over Highsmith?

[Music] Tonight on Steelers Talk, we have a Jaylen Ramsay injury update that you’re not going to want to miss. Also, there’s a couple of QB news items around the AFC North surrounding Lamar Jackson and the Cleveland Browns. Then, we’ll get into uh AJ Brown, who seems a little disgruntled with the Philadelphia Eagles right now. Is it possible that he demands a trade out of Philly and the Steelers trade for him before the trade deadline? I’ll answer that question later in today’s show. So, make sure you guys stick around. Then, I’ll finish up today’s show with a discussion around what the Steelers should do at the edge rusher position once Alex Heismith gets back from his injury. Should Nick Herb get the full-time starting job? I’ll answer that question at the end of today’s show. But before we get into the content today, guys, we are less than 400 subscribers behind Warriors today in Chat Sports’s race for the next channel to get to 100,000 subscribers. Here at Chat Sports, we have uh a very select uh few channels here that have gotten to 100,000 subscribers. Just six channels to this point have made what we call the wall of fame. Uh right now we are in a race with Warriors today to be that seventh channel. If we can get that seventh retired jersey, that means we get the number seven. We get the big Ben Rothosberger jersey to be our jersey here at Chat Sports. So, we got to win this race to 100K. And we have been closing the gap over the last month by thousands of subscribers. And Warriors Today host Steeler Smitty. You guys might might remember Steeler Smitty. We actually have a bet right now with whatever channel makes to makes it to 100,000 subscribers first. The other host owes the other one a $500 steak dinner at the finest steakhouse here in Dallas, Texas. So, I really want to win that dinner, guys. I want Steeler Smitty to pay for that ribeye for me. So, make sure you click that subscribe button if you haven’t already to help us get to 100,000 subscribers first. All right, so we’ll start here with the injury update for Jaylen Ramsay here. This is a tweet put out by Austin Bchel, uh, who had a a little bit of a tibbit here from Nick Farah, who is the pen live reporter for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He says, “Steelers insider Nick Farah thinks Jaylen Ramsay will be back after the Bengals game. Uh, but Joey Porter Jr. will be ready to go for Cleveland. One corner out, one corner back. Steelers have not been healthy in the secondary all season.” And he’s right about that. I mean, it it just seems like once one guy comes in, another guy is getting out with injury. But what this injury update means is that Jaylen Ramsay, uh, we have a t timet on him. It’s probably going to be uh, two weeks out once we get back from the buy. the Browns game and the Bengals game will probably be without Jaylen Ramsey as he recovers from that hamstring injury, at least according to Nick Farah, who’s obviously pretty connected inside the Steelers building. And uh that means both he and Calvin Austin the third are on a pretty similar timetable here. It sounds like Calvin is going to miss just one the two games. And it sounds like Ramsay will miss probably two games once we get back from the buy here and we take on the Browns and the Bengals are the next two games. And honestly, guys, I think the Steelers can manage and they can still win these two football games, uh, while these guys are dealing with their injuries, while they’re getting back. Um, and even without Calvin on offense, even without Jaylen on defense, I think the Browns, you know, with their rookie quarterback coming in here, you know, coming off a buy, Mike Tomlin’s excellent coming off a buy, plus the fact that the Steelers are home. That should be a win for the Steelers and the Bengals can’t do anything right right now offensively or defensively. that might be one of the worst teams in the National Football League, period, right now with Joe Burrow out of the lineup. Of course, that one’s going to be on Thursday Night Football. But I certainly think that the Pittsburgh Steelers uh should be able to win both of these football games, uh whether Calvin Austin the third or Jaylen Ramsey are on the field or not. And honestly, guys, what I want is I want these guys healthy for the Green Bay game because after the Browns game and after the Bengal game, you got three kind of tough games in a row, right? You’ve got that Packer game on Sunday Night Football at home. Then you get the Colts, and the Colts are certainly no pushover this year with Daniel Jones leading the way. And then you got uh on the road in LA versus the Los Angeles Chargers. Those are three tough games in a row, but the good news is it sounds like you’re going to get Jaylen Ramsey, you’re going to get Calvin Austin the third, and yes, you’re going to get Alex Heismith back before this team plays the Green Bay Packers. And if you can get all three of these players back for that stretch of kind of tougher games in the middle of this Steelers schedule, I think that that would be uh the best timetable available for the Pittsburgh Steelers to finally get healthy. Uh and speaking of the Cleveland Browns, we talked about it here. The Steelers play them next on their schedule after their buy in week six here. And the Cleveland Browns just named a new starting quarterback, rookie out of Oregon, Dylan Gabriel, will be their new starting quarterback after Joe Flacco definitely flamed out. uh was not playing well over the first four weeks of the season. And uh Dylan Gabriel now takes the reigns. Gabriel is somebody that’s more of a pre- snap processor. He gets the ball out fast. He gets the ball where it needs to go. I think that uh he has the potential to be more effective in this offense than Joe Flacco was. But personally, guys, I definitely think that this was the right choice for them. He’s better than Shadur Sanders in my opinion. Definitely more pro ready to take on an NFL offense year one uh than uh Shadur Sanders is. And then Joe Flacco is just completely cooked at this point. He’s a true backup option uh for the Cleveland Browns. So I do think Dylan Gabriel probably gives that team the best possible chance to win with the defense there in Cleveland playing as well as it is. Uh the level of play Joe Flacco was providing uh that Cleveland Browns team was just not sustainable enough for a full season. But I’m still fully confident that Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be ready to take on the Cleveland Browns at home in week six. Mike Tomlin’s excellent off of buy. He also has an over 90% win percentage when facing rookie quarterbacks. I don’t think uh you know with this offensive line that they got in Cleveland, which really stinks that Dylan’s going to have much time to throw. I think it’s going to be extremely uncomfortable and I definitely think the Pittsburgh Steelers are still going to pull off the win in week six. Now shifting our focus to Baltimore here. Yesterday we talked about how there was a report that Lamar Jackson was expected to miss two to three weeks with his hamstring injury. Well, NFL Network’s Ian Rapaort reported today that Jackson is quote unquote week to week and he could even play this week uh versus the Houston Texans. So, obviously right now the bank uh or the Ravens are 1 and three. They can’t really afford to lose many of these next few games before they head into their buy. Um, so certainly the pressure is on for Lamar Jackson to play this weekend versus Houston because if they lose this game, man, I think their season is is is not necessarily over, but they’ve definitely uh been digging themselves a hole in every single loss that they take, they’re just digging themselves a deeper and deeper hole. Now, my guess is here, guys, is that Lamar will not play this weekend. All right? I think that they want the Houston Texans to prepare for Lamar Jackson to try and give them a little bit of a competitive advantage, but Lamar did not practice today. I would be surprised if he practiced all week and at the end of the day I think that he will sit out at least this week and honestly he may miss next week’s matchup versus the Los Angeles Rams as well. So I really think that the Ravens season could come down to whether or not Cooper Rush can get a win versus a Houston Texans team this weekend. They are at home so keep that in mind. But uh the Ravens season is definitely hanging in the balance over these next few weeks. So, still to come here on Steelers Talk, I’m going to be talking about AJ Brown um and whether or not he wants out of Philly and whether or not the Steelers make sense as a trade option for the Philadelphia Eagles if they’re going to be shipping out AJ Brown. Then, we’ll be talking about Alex Heismith versus Nick Herbig. Which one deserves to be the starting number two edge rusher when Heismith gets back from injury? I’ll answer that question at the end of today’s show. But before we get into the rest of today’s program, let’s have a word from our sponsor today at Prize Picks. You and I, we make decisions every single day. But on Prize Picks, being right can actually get you paid. Don’t miss any of the excitement this season with Prize Picks, where it’s good to be right. Football season is finally here, and you better believe I’ll be getting my Prize Pix lineups in all season long. Prize Pix is super simple to play. Uh here is my projection here for week five in professional football. I’m taking the more in passing yards for Justin Herbert, the more in receiving yards for Quinton Johnston, and the more in receiving yards for Zack Z. That is code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup on the prize pick app today. Prize Pick, it’s good to be right. Now, let’s move on to AJ Brown here where the superstar wide receiver uh posted a cryptic message on X after the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past Sunday. Uh now, AJ Brown did not have a particularly great game from a statistics point of view. Uh he had two catches for just seven yards and no touchdowns in that game versus the Buccaneers. And honestly, throughout the season, he has not been getting targeted nearly as much as a player of his status would expect to get the football. Of course, Brown has had some issues with the Eagles in the past. Um, certainly uh having some issues with Jaylen Herz calling him out publicly before. Um, obviously he’s still there. Those things have been patched up. But this time now it’s just another chapter in AJ Brown, you know, showing his frustrations with the Philadelphia Eagles. This is what he posted on his ex on Sunday evening. He says, quote, “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.” Okay. Well, I mean, posting this is definitely making a scene right there, AJ. I think he he should probably know that. But, you know, if the if if if AJ Brown is traded, okay, this is what I’ll say. I think Pittsburgh would be probably at the top of his short list of teams that he would love to go play for. All right. Not only is Arthur Smith the offensive coordinator here in Pittsburgh, who of course he had some really great years with in Tennessee, and you know, he’s going to be a fit in this offense, but also one of his best friends and college teammate. DK Metaf is here with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Of course, they took this famous photo together training for the NFL draft all those years back and I’m sure if there’s a team that AJ Brown would love to go to, he would love to play with DK again and he would love to play in an Arthur Smith offense again. So, I think AJ would love to come here to Pittsburgh, but unfortunately, I really do doubt that Pittsburgh ends up getting him in a trade. I did I did touch on this briefly in our uh wide receiver trade targets video earlier this week, but I’ll kind of elaborate on my reasons why here. First reason why I don’t think this will happen is I don’t think Philly will come to the table. All right. Obviously, he’s under contract for multiple seasons. They have invested in him. Um and he is the number one receiver in that offense. You take him away, um that’s going to make that passing game in Philly even worse than it already is. All right. So, they definitely want to keep AJ Brown. Um, and unless AJ just straight up demands a trade and says, “I’m not playing for you guys ever again,” I don’t think that the Eagles will ever come to the table. All right. And right now, it seems like AJ has apologized. He he made a public statement today in a media availability in Philadelphia saying that it was a mistake and yada yada yada. It seems like they’ve patched things up. So, like I said, unless AJ Brown is just straight up done with the Eagles, and says, “I won’t play for this organization anymore,” I don’t think a trade is happening. and I don’t really see that uh coming to fruition before the trade deadline, especially because the Eagles are 4-0. And then the second reason why I don’t think the Steelers in particular would trade for AJ Brown is that he’d be too expensive for this football team. And I don’t mean from a cap perspective. I mean from a draft capital perspective in terms of what the Steelers would be willing to give to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for AJ Brown. Um, I think that Philly would need at least a first round pick to get AJ Brown uh uh or to give him up in that in that scenario. Um, because he is a top five receiver in the game. All right. I believe that he is a truly elite uh tier one level of wide receiver in the same conversation as Jamar Chase and Justin Jefferson and the best receivers in the game today. Um, and frankly, they would need that first round pick at least, maybe even two first round picks to even think about trading him away. I think other teams would be willing to give up a first round pick for him, but Pittsburgh would likely be unlike would would would be unwilling uh to pay that price because they want to use that first round pick on a quarterback next year, right? They want to be able uh to take their franchise quarterback. And you know, they really aren’t interested in giving up either their first or second round pick. I think they would be willing to give up a third round pick for a wide receiver. And if you guys are looking for some more realistic wide receiver trade targets for the Pittsburgh Steelers, you guys can check out uh the video that we put out earlier this week. I go into guys like Jacobe Meyers, Chris Olive, and others that are more realistic. Um, so I’ll put the chip to that one in the top right now and then also put the link to that one in the comments and description if you guys are interested in some more Steelers wide receiver targets. So now let’s have this discussion here, guys. Um, you know, Alex Heismith is set to return from injury here relatively soon over the next few weeks. And in when that happens and if TJ Watt and Nick Herbig are also still healthy, who do the Pittsburgh Steelers start at the number two edge rusher position? Because Nick Herbig has been playing absolutely lights out over the last three weeks. He has 10 tackles, four of those for a loss, and then he has three sacks. That’s a sack per game. He has a forced fumble, and he also has an interception. So, he has been playing arguably all procaliber football for the Pittsburgh Steelers uh in in while Alex Heismith has been injured. There’s a lot of people out there that are saying that Nick Herbig should be the full-time number two starting edge and then Alex Heismith should be the rotational third guy. And honestly, if the Steelers want to go that route, I’m perfectly fine with that. Nick Herbig is a super impactful player and you have to find ways to get him on the field more consistently than like a true rotational third down role in my opinion. Now, Alex is also a very good player, super disruptive, all that great stuff. So, I really don’t think you can go wrong with this one. And if you want to stick with Alex Icemith as your number two red rusher, I think that’s perfectly fine. He is the disruptor type. He’s somebody that’s still a really good run defender. He can go out into coverage if you need. But Nick Herbig has also shown the ability to do those things. But I would argue Herbig has maybe even been even more disruptive and more impactful on the football game than really Alex Heismith has really ever been. I think Alex is a really good player, but Nick Herbig is playing out of his freaking mind over these last three games. and if he continues that, it’s going to be tough to take him out of the starting lineup. But my suggestion to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Martin, the the outside linebackers coach here in Pittsburgh said today in a media availability that their plan once once I gets back is that they’re going to use all three of these guys on the field at the same time. And I am excited to see what those packages look like. When you get teams into second and long, third and medium, third and long, and you know the opposing uh offense is going to be passing the football, getting these three guys out there and running these crazy stunts, doing all that fun stuff, I cannot wait to see what that quote unquote NASCAR package could look like because I mean, these three guys are some of the most disruptive uh pass rushers in the game today. It’s the best W uh uh edge rushing trio in the National Football League today. and you get those three guys on the field at the same time, you can really create some havoc. And man, it’s just nice to be able to have this trio and have this be the identity of this football team or you can get after opposing quarterbacks like no other team in the National Football League. So, whenever Alexismith does return to the lineup, I have a feeling that this pass rush here in Pittsburgh is going to go from really freaking good to borderline unstoppable. And I can’t wait for that. So, who starts? Let me know down there in the comments section. If you were in charge of the Steelers and you had a choice between starting Alex Heismith or Nick Herbig on the other side of TJ Watt, who is the number two snap getter? Give me an AH for Alex Heismith or NH for Nick Herbig. Let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. Then we’ll finish up today’s news and rumors segment uh by letting you guys know that fan favorite UDFA Sebastian Castro. He was on the Steelers practice squad has been claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday. He is now a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. Um, so obviously, you know, I was a big fan of Sebastian coming in. I was hoping that the Steelers were going to be able to develop him and he was eventually going to be able to be trusted with an active roster spot. Uh, but Tampa Bay apparently saw quite a bit in him as well and they have decided to add him to their roster. So, best of luck to Sebastian and Tampa Bay. 1. Some of this stuff is so ridiculous that idk why we even bother talking abt it. Who wouldn’t love AJ brown? But why in the world would the eagles ever entertain a trade like that when they literally have built the perfect football team?

  2. So in the last two years we have traded for Kupp Olave Hill Ayuk Sutton Brown McClaurin Lazard Wilson Cobb Moore Higgins and Ridley. Stop already with the clickbait.

  3. you're wrong !! Sanders is way better than all the other QB's!!. there's not too many things that I disagree with you on, but this one I disagree !! very strongly.. his college career his professionalism outweighs all the rookies in the draft.

  4. I would start Highsmith as he’s been the #2 before Nick Herbig was here. Also don’t forget about Jack Sawyer. He’s been doing a very respectable job as well. Pittsburgh has a wonderful problem. Numerous great players at LB and who do I start? Doesn’t seem to matter. They all produce

  5. Watt and Highsmith should be the starting pair, and use Herbig as the backup to give Watt and Highsmith and also give the rookie LB a chance to back up

  6. Can we find out what’s going on with Roman Wilson? What the hell is the situation there? Seems very strange that we heard all these rumors at camp about how good he’s looking and then nothing….is that just what it was rumors?

  7. This is the shit that pisses me off about steelers fans.

Yall are seriously debating starting herbig over highsmith? Dead ass??? Wtf meth are yall smoking??

  8. SANDERS SHOULD GO TO THE RAIDERS OR 49ers bc they suck ass IN NFL LEAGUE 🤮 SANDERS CAN MAKE THOSE TEAM BETTER BY DEVELOPING SANDERS BC NFL IS WAY DIFFERENT LEVEL 🤦🏽‍♂️💪🏽💯
