Dan Campbell previews Lions at Bengals | 2025 Week 5 Opponent Preview
Welcome back to another opponent preview with head coach Dan Campbell in week five going on the road to the Cincinnati Bengals. Jake Browning has stepped up into that starting quarterback role. He’s filling in for Joe Burrow who’s recovering from some turf toe. So you’ve got to watch these Bengals Monday Night Football against Denver. What kind of identity, if any, did you see coming out of Cincy? Well, I think what they’re trying to figure out here a little bit is is, you know, okay, where do we go without Burrow? You know, we know we still have playmakers. They’ve got a little bit of a run game. and they got Brown and and defensively it’s about they need to get takeaways, right? That that’s what it’s got to be. So, that’s a little bit of who they are. Coach, you’re going to have to pick your poison with playmakers on the Bengals offense. From Monday Night Football, pocket closing in on Browning. He finds T. Higgins for an impressive catch on the sideline. What is making Higgins so dangerous this season? Yeah, he he’s a massive threat. Uh obviously with number one, Chase. This is what this guy can do, man. You give them a one-on-one and you got the green light, throw it up, give them a chance to make a play. You can do that with either one of these guys, but they’re also very good route runners, too. So, uh, this is it, man. You can be in perfect position. This guy goes over the top of you and makes a play. Next up, Jamar Chase is the leading wide receiver for the Bengals right now. In this play, he looks over his shoulder, still able to snag the downfield throw. How is he elevating his play through the first few games of this season? He’s impressive. And here you go again, man. There’s another one-on-one. Just give him a chance and this guy will go up over the top of you. We just saw Higgins do it. You see this guy do it. And really both of those guys have run after catch ability too. This is just making a play, call it 20, 25 yards down the field. This guy’s a dangerous runner after catch, too. Defensively, Trey Hendrickson is a mainstay on that side of the ball. 17 and a half sacks last season. Slower start for him. Just two sacks through the first four games. What is that matchup going to look like Sunday with your tackles? Well, look, here’s the good news. We got good tackles. All right. Obviously, uh and we just faced uh Miles Garrett. Okay. And and by the way, we’ve we’ve had a camp full of Hutchinson and freaking Davenport. This guy’s good. But we we’re we’re our guys are seeing good a lot. So, we’ll be ready for this. But this guy is he’s dangerous, man. He’s really crafty. He’s got a quick first step. He’s strong, right? He’s got some explosiveness, but this is where he he’s just crafty, man. You got to be on point with your fundamentals cuz he does the hand swipe and then makes the play here. That’s one of his patented moves. Mhm. On the back end for Cincy is Dax Hill. He moved from safety to cornerback, but he is still tackling like a safety and he’s very physical, especially by the goal line. What do you have to make sure your offense uh knows about him? Yeah, good football player. You know, we we and I know this is it’s been a while now, but you know, this guy, we did a lot of work on him and liked him as a football player. Very craft. He’s smart. U you just said, man, he’s tough. He’s feisty. He’s got ball skills. He’s a guy, man. We you got to put a hat on him, you know. You got to put a hat on him. And this is not going to do it, right? This is not going to get it done. But he he’s got a nose for the football. A lot of times you you’ll see some of these nickels and you say, “Let’s get him involved in the run game.” Maybe we put the old line on him. This guy’s a little craftier, right? So, uh, we got to be aware of him. Three-game win streak for your Detroit Lions. It feels like every single one of those wins, you’ve done it differently. What does that say about your team right now? Well, it’s good because um you know, I’ve said it before, but I think the more the more ways you figure out how to win and uh and you get good at those, then you know, pretty soon you’ve seen and adjusted to every type of game there is out there by the opponent and what it’s taken to win. And then there’s these games we don’t even know yet what we don’t know. There’s going to be some games we’re going to have to find a way to get through it. And once you’ve kind of adjusted the way that you need to adjust, man, you’re you’re a very dangerous team. We’ll see you come Sunday. Thanks so much, coach. Okay. Thank you.
