This move COMPLETELY changes how we view the Spurs…
This move completely changes how we view the San Antonio Spurs. It’s the one face here with Victor Webeanama and Rashard Lewis has completely changed how we view the San Antonio Spurs shooting, including WBY having a smoother shooting stroke than ever. Rashard Lewis is redefining what the San Antonio Spurs are in terms of shooting. And I got some numbers that are going to be very interesting to look at, including how Rashard Lewis will impact this team. We got to dive into all of that. Plus, a new extension in the NBA does also have some implications for one certain young Spurs star that is due for a new contract. All that coming up on this episode of Spurs Digest. And let’s just start there with the new contract. There’s a lot going on around the NBA right now. Safe to say training camp roll media day coming in. But there is a contract extension that just happened and that’s Nicolola Yoic. No, not Yic. Yoic from the Miami Heat. He agreed to a 4-year 62.4 $.4 million rookie contract extension with the franchise. And he averaged a career-high 10.7 points per game last season. There he is. Great three-point shooter, 37% from from the three-point line. He’s 610. Kind of a small forward. Really good for him. But what does this mean for the San Antonio Spurs? Well, a certain Jeremy Sohan is also eligible for a very similar extension. And his numbers, believe it or not, are very similar to Nola Yovic. Now, Jeremy Sohan does bring a lot of different elements to the table, but I want to dive into this and how this could impact the Spurs because look, looking at the cap table, I probably could have left out all the two-way guys, but I I like to include the whole table here. We know Sohan’s extension is going to overlap with some other rookie deals like Harper and Castle, but it is going to overlap with Wemby’s extension, especially if we give Sohan four years of an extension. It’ll even come in at like, you know, the year after Deon Vel expires, the year after Harper expires and Cornet expires. like a bunch of contracts will be ending right as the first year or the last year of Sohan’s extension will be there. So there’s going to be some interesting stuff there at the end of the extension but for now 7 mil this year 7 mil anyway ignore the voice crack or don’t maybe you can comment about it. This is saying we don’t edit these baby we just go straight from start to finish but Jeremy So it’s a very interesting comparable to me because let’s be honest if you’re paying him like just over 15 mil a year this is like 15 and a halfish I think 15.6 six something like that million dollars per year. That’s pretty reasonable if we’re talking for Jeremy Sohan. But then there’s a comparison, right? Nicole Yoic is taller. He is a better shooter. I think he’s more transferable between different teams. Again, that kind of 11 points, four boards. He can pass the rock a decent bit. Gets a couple steals. Doesn’t really turn the ball over cuz he doesn’t have the ball in his hands that much, but he doesn’t play defense that well. Jeremy Sohan, on the other hand, is an unbelievable defender. He moves off ball way better than Yoic does. He is a good slasher as well. He’s even handled the pick and roll as both a ball handler and a screener. He is a very very versatile player, but he kind of lacks that three-point shooting, which is a weapon that he doesn’t have. Right? So, there are questions as well like Yovic, does he project as a longerterm starter for the Heat? So, does he project as a longerterm starter for the Spurs? Like, if we look at what we’re kind of projecting, he could be, but the real uh the reality is the word I’m looking for of the matter is that Harrison Barnes right now actually has that starting spot. I have Soan in the graphic because I am a Jeremy Sohan fan and you guys know that if you’ve been watching a lot of the videos, but this contract I think serves as a very good comparable. What do I think he’s going to get? I want to see what you guys think he’s going to get. But I think he’ll actually come in at above this. I think based on this contract, based on what Yoic brings, based on what I think Sohan can bring in the future, I would not be shocked if we did see an extension early this season because I think there’s going to be a bit of pressure to get this one done. So’s going to want to show that like what he can bring to the table as well, which you know there’s no doubt like he should do that. But again coming off an injury he might not want to sign it that early. He wants to show hey look what I can do. Then again like we saw what he could do last year and he might get fewer minutes this year. The ball in his hands less. I think someone’s going to come in at about four years 70 million. So 17.5ish per year. I can see it approaching the 20 million mark but I don’t think it’s actually going to go above 20. I’ve seen some people say it will. I really don’t think it will. But I got to hear what you guys have to say. Do you think this Nicool Yoic uh contract is a good comparable for Jeremy Sohan, I’d love to hear from you, but we got to get into the big good stuff today. And the Spurs shooting has been a a big concern, right? It’s something that we’ve talked about a lot. And before we dive into Rashard Lewis and what he can bring, I want to provide some context because there has been a narrative, something we’ve talked about a ton in videos, that the Spurs are a poor shooting team. And just objectively looking at the roster, your average fan is going to say, “Yeah, that’s probably the case.” And okay, do the numbers back that up? Yes and no. Here’s what I mean. So, uh, well, no, not Rashard Lewis. This here, this is last year. This is from NBA.com. This is the, uh, league best three-point uh, or sorry, yeah, the highest three-point attempts per game in the NBA. And you can see the Spurs there come in a solid seventh behind the Celtics, Warriors, Bulls, Cavs, Wolves, J, and Jazz. And the Spurs are there in seventh. We attempted 39.63s a game. We made 14.1 of them, which is the fewest of any of these seven minus Utah. So, when it comes to the percentage, the San Antonio Spurs, I’m going to have to go over here, are way down in 12. Like, we’re we’re much closer to the middle of the pack. We’re almost exactly average. We’re down there 35.7%. The league average three-point percentage was around 36. Slightly below average in terms of total team three-point percentage, but we were one of the like highest volume three-point shooting teams in the NBA. So, what does that signify? Why am I talking about these numbers? Stumbling over my words while I’m at it. That’s just part of this. But the reason I’m talking about this is that Mitch Johnson has made it clear with what we see on the court and what he has kind of run and practice and kind of said in general, the Spurs want to play a fast pace. And we have the roster absolutely to do that. And with that fast pace, we’re going to see a lot of nice threes, open threes in transition. But also because of the kind of players we have that are so good at slashing to the rim, we’re going to stretch defenses. uh not even stretch defenses I should say, but we’re going to cause a lot of chaos. And Webby himself is going to do some insane things. And last year, we had a Fox only for part of the year who was also hurt with a hurt pinky three-point percentage was down. Devin Vel, I think I have graphics for these guys. Three-poin percentage last year, was still 37%, but he was on a bum foot. That could very well climb back up. Julian Champi, he was 40% a couple years ago, 37% last year, but that could also very well go up. We have a lot of guys whose percentage could go up, including Wemby, who’s probably going to get some better looks this year with better teammates, more open looks, that could go up. So, for a team that is one of the highest three-point shooting volumes in the NBA, that percentage could very well go up. But it’s not just because of, oh, I think these players are going to take a leap compared to last year. Rashard Lewis plays a major role in this. And he’s a guy that was a big focus of a lot of what we’ve been talking about this off season. This coaching addition makes a ton of sense for the Spurs. 610. Rashard Lewis’s release, I don’t know if you guys watch him, I can’t even really do this. Was like way up here. It was like way up here. The dude could shoot over basically anyone, right? And that’s something We WBY has in common with him. But as Josh Parades points out, 610 Rashard Lewis shot 38.6% from three when not many bigs were shooting like that. Underrated pickup for the Spurs to bring him in as a player development coach. And we’re seeing these videos here in practice. I like D’Arren Fox on the side here. He makes it, oh yeah, he gets a little angry there, but he’s not looking at those guys. And we’re seeing this shooting from Wemby and the the kind of consensus along that Wemby video of him shooting has been doesn’t that shooting stroke look smoother? Cuz it does to me. I mean it’s just practice. Like I can’t say that enough. It is just practice. But if I’m if I’m watching this like objectively it looks pretty nice. It get a little hitchy but I think like it looks pretty smooth. And Rashard Lewis has been given a lot of tips. We’ve seen those those highlight clips of WBY even shooting over Carter Bryant with a nice smooth jump shot. So Rashard Lewis coming in again, a big man who could shoot the ball very well. With Victor Webbinama, I’d say his percentage is going to go up. Deon Vel, I think the percentage is going to go up. Champeni percentage going up. Fox, hard to say. I would tend to agree that it’ll go up. Not to mention the addition of Kelly Oolen, that is a great great shooter. A 40% three-point shooter. This guy can come in knock down some threes as well. So, for a Spurs team that’s whole offense is designed around some fast-paced offense and shooting a lot of threes, some of the most in the NBA, that percentage is not going to stay that low for that long. And I I firmly believe that and I think the addition of Rashard Lewis will just help with these reasons. I think they’re going to be better at shooting anyway. Rashard Lewis is just there to elevate that to another level. So, I’m hyped for this. I mean, maybe am I putting giving too much credit to Rashard Lewis? I don’t care if I am. Look, he deserves credit. Look, we’ll have to wait and see what happens in season, but I am beyond excited. I want to hear your guys’ thoughts on all this down below. I love Jeremy and he is irreplaceable IMO. But, is he needed?
Too funny. "He'll (wemby) get better looks" . How? He's 7'6"! ( :
He gets hurt every year
Y'all gotta chill with the splash headline thumbnails.
Stop it w/the 17 million. Jeremy Sochan = Obi Toppin money or less. He should be making LESS than Jovic. Why? He's not a starter. He's coming off the bench. You've already got a guy in Keldon coming off the bench making too much money, starter money almost, so you can't have multiple. I like Jeremy, but he the only position Sochan could play where he'd have some physical advantage is the 3 — and he can't play there because he can't space. Whereas Jovic is a mismatch at either the 3 and he's longer than most 4s — including our slated 4, HB. I suspect that, in addition to his defense, that's one of the reasons they did the Point Sochan experiment; not just to give him reps, but to force a way to keep him out on the floor. No such luck. Sochan won't get even Dorian Finney-Smith money from any other team in the league — book it.
We good on sochan unless its a super good contract , Carter bryant makes him expendable
3 years 66 mill or 4 years for 70 is VERY fair. THE DESTROYER
Dude, we are not slow. sochan doesn't want that deal because he was the 9th overall pick, and nikola jovic was a second rounder 41st.
I remember watching him warm up game 5 in the 14 finals when he was with the heat. He didnt miss a shot lol
Stop with the dumb titles
I hope the Spurs trade him Schoan. He ain't worth that type of money
Greedy Fox and his Gangsta agent taking the max may prevent Sochan from an extension unless he is willing to take less. I say SFO will wait on extending Sochan to see if he is the next Charles Bassey.
Fast pace?
If the Suns in the '90s – with D'Antoni and Nash had an offense that shot w/in 7 seconds of the shot clock – had someone like Wemby, they would have won titles.
Spurs to intro a new offensive scheme: driving big guards and big men shooting perimeter shots.
Don't forget that keldon johnson has been in the gym getting his shots up, plus working on his form and mechanics!
