Our boy is really making a push for those 9 games tho. Good problem to have

  1. I am very pumped on Cootes, easily the best centre prospect they’ve had since EP40 (and Bo before that).

I just can’t shake the feeling that the stakes are too high to start the season to risk an 18 year old player getting exposed when the regular season starts and the competition ramps up.

Vancouver just doesn’t have the kind of centre depth to shelter/protect the kid.

  2. I’m really impressed with how all of our centres have stepped up in this preseason.

Chytil has looked great, Petey seems to have his confidence again, and Raty, Sasson, and Cootes have all tried their best to make it hard for management to cut them.

  3. Let’s temper expectations and develop him right so he hits his ceiling. That said, give him 9 games in sheltered minutes to give him a taste.

  4. I am super high on Cootes, I think that he has literally everything needed to make it as a star in the league, skating, shot, work ethic, positioning, temperament, everything.

That said you have to send him to junior. You want these guys to be able to build off the confidence of being a high draft pick, and the better way to do this (in my opinion) is to set the goal of dominating junior. Let him go back and put up a ppg+, let him be captain, let him go to the WJC, let him experience a playoff run where he is “the guy”. Let him roll the momentum of that year into a kid who can walk into the NHL and genuinely believe that someone is going to have to beat him for a spot on the team.

  5. The Canucks should give Cootes a 9-game shot this season. I just don’t know if it would be best to do it now or at the end of the season.

  6. Question, could the Canucks wait for an injury to call up cootes and give him the 9 games, or once he’s sent down to WHL does he have to stay for the season?

  7. Hot take:

Cootes has a higher ceiling than people think. His adaptability and hockey is astounding at his age, and he will progress over the years. I see a lot of comparisons to Horvat, but I think his ceiling is higher than that. I’ve seen so many people say (before we drafted him) that his projection was an elite 3c. What? A 3c at best, gets like 45 points in a good year. Bo has only hit above 60pts twice and averages out to like 56pts/season, which, personally, I believe Cootes surpasses. His offensive game is continuously evolving.

Ik he said in an interview that he models his game after both Brayden Point and JT Miller, I believe he can be just in between in skill level in his prime.

  8. I would love to see him get even a handful of regular season games, hopefully get him his first goal in the show, and then send him back with nothing but confidence and tools to keep improving at the WHL level. I didn’t think this would be the case when he was drafted – but could he make the team full time next season? It feels that could be the case.
