Ducks Extend LaCombe, Panthers Extend Mikkola, Tampa Claims Copley, Three Day Preview
Welcome back. All right. I don’t know if there’s enough magnets on the board to qualify as a madness board, but uh it’s close. It’s close. Uh at any rate, news of the day for all you fine people on the internet for your Thursday. It is October the 2nd. Uh I’ve got the rest of the preseason games here to preview. So, we’ll talk about 3 days worth of games. Uh also some waiverwire news and uh other signing news, and we’ll get into that. Um, the sticker shock that I I knew we would see with the salary cap going up the way that it is continues. Uh, Nico Mika gets a $5 million cap hit, which is completely fair. The 8 years is how you get that completely fair cap hit. So, Mikola is signed until he’s 37 years of age. So, this may very well finish out his career. Uh, the Florida Panthers keeping the band together. Uh, most of their roster now signed through 2030. So long-term contracts, there’s obviously some risk there long term, but for the short term and you’re a team that’s looking for your third straight Stanley Cup, makes sense to keep the band together. So, we’ll see how things work out with Mikola and the Panthers. Um, the other contract signed today, which has got a lot of people wondering what’s going on, is Lome. Now, Jackson Lome is one of the best kept secrets in the NHL. The contract he has just signed means he’s no longer a secret. Um, it is an 8-year extension for Lome. It pays him $9 million per season. I saw a lot of complaints about the Luke Hughes one yesterday. Yes, general managers pay for potential. General managers now pay players for what they believe they will do. Um the way that contracts used to work was you’d have to have three or four really good years and then you get paid. And now you just have to show you’re a really good defenseman, which Lome proved this past season, and you’re going to get paid. So, uh we’ll see how this contract ages. I do like Lome a lot. I talked him up a lot uh during the season this past year and now they don’t have to worry about any kind of Lome contract at all for quite some time to come. So, uh let me know your thoughts. I I think it’s it’s fine. As I’ve said, the salary cap’s going up a lot. Guys are going to make a heck of a lot more money. the idea that well salaries are going to go up by 30% but you guys need to make sure you’re not going to make more money than that guy over there. It’s just not how it works. Um so yeah, let me know your thoughts. Uh Brian Rust getting to other news. Uh Brian Rust dealing with a lower body injury. He’s out a minimum of two weeks. So I would say three. I would say three. That’s that’s I always every time they’re like, “Well, we think it’s this, so just add another week to it just to be on the safe side.” Uh the Penguins also busy with the waiver wire. Sebastian Aaho. Not that Sebastian Aaho, the other Sebastian Aaho. Uh Danton Heinen on waiverss. Um mildly surprised to see Heinen on waiverss. Um I I don’t know if he clears to be honest. Uh Kemp CPAN uh Larson and Pon and also waved. So we’ll see if the Penguins lose any players on waiverss. It is possible they lose one or a couple. Uh the Calgary Flames have announced that Ryan Husk is sticking around. they’ve given him a two-year extension. Uh it is it is good to see a coach getting an extension. It’s not fun to watch them going into what is called the lame duck season, right? So, you don’t know if they’re sticking around, the team’s going to resign him, all this fun stuff. So, Huska gets a two-year extension. That does not have to be a a conversation around the Flames this year. Uh Jonathan Hubo not at practice today. He did not finish last night’s game against the Conucks. So, it’s probably one of those they want to be cautious and abundance of caution because there’s only a few days left of preeason. And for the Flames, they only have one game left. So, there’s there’s not really much point in pushing anybody at this point in time. Uh when you know that the season starts on the 7th, that this isn’t really the season yet. Uh the Flames also waving some players, and I’m not entirely surprised by this. Uh Karen’s Provattov uh when I saw the Flames in in uh Abbottzford here, Prozvatov had a rough first period. He did recover the rest of the way, but Kulie is considered to be pretty good goalender as well. They don’t think that they’re going to be able to wave Kulie and get him through waivers. So, they’ve waved Prozvatov and we’ll see if he clears waiverss. I think he probably does, but with goalenders, you just never know. Uh Slovio also waved by the Calgary Flames today. Uh, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the only team that claimed a player. I’m not surprised by this. And this tells me that Andre Vaselovski may not be ready for the start of the season. Phoenix CPPley has been claimed by Tampa from the LA Kings. A veteran goalender, a number three in the LA organization. He’ll be number three in the Tampa organization now. And that means that Johan Johansson and CPPley will probably be the tandem to start the season. U it does not sound like Vaselvki is going to be out that long. This just gives them that that cushion. They don’t really have to worry about it. So maybe it’ll be like Rhymer at the start of this past season where he ended up in Anaheim for a while and then when the goalending gets healthy, Rhymer ended up back in Buffalo. So maybe CPPley at some point ends up back on waiverss for Tampa and he ends up back in LA and they send him down to the miners. Uh the Vancouver Conucks have waved Krabsov. So, going back to the game I watched last week, I I did say to Ivon during that game, I’m like, “Yeah, this they they need more from him than like just Krabsov has good speed and he’s got some good instincts, but the finishing just that’s what the Canucks brought him back for and uh it just it just hasn’t worked. Plus, I think he’s been outshawn by all of the Abbottzford players. That one Abbottzford line as it’s been dubbed has been really good. So, Vancouver showing that it’s going to be merit-based and who makes the team. I agree with that 110%. Uh, the Utah Mammoth have waved two players. McCartney and Perunovich, it is Paul McCartney, isn’t it? I’m just kidding. U, yeah, McCartney and Perunovich both waved. Perunich is an interesting name to see on the waiver wire. Probably clears, but we are getting towards the end of camp. There might be a team that needs a defenseman. Pernovich might be of interest. Uh the Oilers have waved Denine and Stillman. So both Chase and Riley Stillman have been waved uh early in this preseason. The Vegas Golden Knights waved Coglin and Lzinski. So both of them will probably clear, I would think. Uh Damon Hunt waved by the Columbus Blue Jackets and Seattle has waved Meyers and Stevens. So most of those players are going to clear, but we are getting into players now who might be of interest to other teams. For instance, with Calgary, Karens’s might be might be of interest to a team that’s looking for a player that can put the puck in the net. He does have those offensive instincts, just clearly not enough for him to win a job with the Calgary Flames coming out of camp. So, let me know your thoughts. All right, so today we have seven games in the National Hockey League. We have uh five games tomorrow and then 11 games on Saturday to wrap up the preeason. Tonight we have five games starting at 7 Eastern, 4 Pacific. I will be watching four of them. Uh, the only one I’m not watching is Florida, Tampa, cuz I just watched Florida Tampa a couple days ago. But I’m watching Boston and Washington. That should be fun. 7 Eastern, 4 Pacific, of course. Detroit and Toronto. So, I’ll watch that one. Let you guys know how that turns out. Uh, the Battle of Florida. So, all 7:00, 4:00 Easter or 4:00 Pacific, 7:00 Eastern starts. New Jersey and the Rangers go at it again. So, I will be watching that one. Uh, the Islanders and Philly going at it as well. So, uh, I will be watching four games that start at 4:00 Pacific. Uh, then starting at 8 Eastern, 5 Pacific, the Ottawa Senators and St. Louis. Uh, starting at 9 Eastern, 6 Pacific, the LA Kings and Utah uh, go at it. Believe that’s their second match up of the preseason. Correct. Anyways, those are your seven games for tonight. Let me know your thoughts. Tomorrow, as I said, we have five games. Then, uh, only one starting at 7 Eastern, 4 Pacific. That’s Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Uh 8 Eastern, 5 Pacific, the Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks, they go at it. Uh 9:00 Eastern, 6:00 Pacific, the Winnipeg Jets and the Calgary Flames go at it. And then 10:00 Eastern, 7:00 Pacific, two games starting tomorrow night at 10 Eastern, 7 Pacific. The Oilers and the Conucks for the second time in the preseason and San Jose and Vegas go at it yet again. So, uh some some rematches and matchups that we’ve already seen, but it’s preseason, so that happens all the time. Uh, Saturday, as mentioned, 11 games. They run pretty much all through the day, although there’s no really late games. 12:30 Eastern, 9:30 a.m. Pacific, the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers. That is a changed time. I believe that’s uh 2 and 1/2 hours ahead of where it was supposed to start originally. Uh, 2 Eastern, 11:00 a.m. Pacific, the Rangers and the Boston Bruins uh will renew rivalry, renew their rivalry. Then at 4 Eastern, 1 Pacific, we have two games starting then, the Ducks and the Kings, as well as Carolina and Nashville. So, Nashville’s preseason’s made up playing against Eastern teams. Uh 6 Eastern, 3 Pacific, mostly. Uh 6 Eastern, 3 Pacific. The Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars meet again. Uh they met the other night as well. 7 Eastern, 4 Pacific. We have 1 2 3 4 five games starting at that time. Uh Columbus and Washington meet again. I know they’ve met at least once in the preseason. Uh, and the one that everybody’s going to be watching, right, Ottawa and Montreal. It feels like we’re watching the birth of a major rivalry between the Sens and the Habs. Considering they may very well end up fighting for the same playoff spot or trying to fight their way into the top three against one another uh in the Atlantic, that’s going to make for some really fun interesting games. Uh, 7 Eastern, 4 Pacific start between St. Louis and Chicago. Uh, so for the Blackhawks, they play against Minnesota and then St. Louis. For St. Louis, they’re against Ottawa and then Chicago. Uh Tampa Bay and Florida meet again because that’s how that works. Tampa Bay is the host tonight. Florida’s the host on Saturday. Um and then they probably play each other three more times to start the season. Uh there was one season, I’m trying to remember if it was 2022, was it 2022 where these teams played each other a bunch in the preseason and then they played each other a couple more times in the regular season. They really get tired of each other. They really do. Uh 7 Eastern, 4 Pacific start. Toronto and Detroit play again. So Toronto’s the host tonight. Detroit is the host on Saturday. And then at 8 Eastern, 5 Pacific on Saturday night, San Jose and Utah. I feel like I should definitely watch that one. Uh just cuz it’s the last game of the preseason. And we could talk about the Sharks in Utah and all that fun stuff. But these are the last of the games that do not matter to the standings. They matter to the players that are in them. There are guys still trying to win the final jobs, and there will definitely be some players who who change teams because of waiverss. Um, it’s going to be interesting to see how everything shakes down. And then I believe that rosters are due on Monday. So, the last of the waiver moves and whatever they’re going to do to set the rosters would be on Sunday and then the rosters are set on Monday with the regular season starting on Tuesday. So, let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. As always, hit like and subscribe in the event you may not have done so already. Uh, thank you guys so much for all your support. It’s greatly appreciated. I will talk to you again soon.

Heinen has played like absolute garbage in every preseason game so far this year for the Pens. I've never seen the guy play as bad as he has this preseason. I really hope some team decides to take him.
Whatever he says let me know your thoughts I anticipate the video ending
ðŸ˜
Is this Pavlov
With the LaCombe extension and the Luke Hughes extension I wonder what Edvinsson will ask Detroit for, situation is a bit different as he is only the #2 Defenseman in Detroit but it’s still something this wings fan thinks about
I love LaCombe, one of my favorite dmans right now. I know how overlooked he is just cuz he is on the Ducks, so the reaction from people doesnt surprise me. During my fantasy draft, I knew he would drop so I was able to draft him later than when he should have went. Cant wait to watch him this season, absolute stud.
That play from huberdeau was a head scratcher
Huberdeau may be out longer than maintenance, he rag dolled and was out cold for a few seconds. Still under investigation so likely concussion protocol at minimum.
So what's with Verbeek in Anaheim…you play hardball with yr #2 centre who has many nhl games…yet u throw $9M at LaCombe no problem who has barely played in the nhl. Why treat McTavish that way???
I have zero problems with teams, especially lesser market teams, paying their young guys before they get a taste of getting close to UFA. There's been enough of a sample size to realize tha these deals do workout for the most part, even if they do become an "overpayment", I'm sure it also helps build a nice relationship between the player and the brass.
Personally, there would be nothing fun about these guys getting close to hitting the open market and seeing the same 4-5 fanbases brag about them potentially going to their team.
I'm really pleased to see Huska extended.
For me, the difference between LaCombe and McTavish will be in their NEXT contracts.
LaCombe may find himself underpaid in the last half of his contract. ðŸ˜
McTavish, if he continues on his career arc, will be due for a major raise. That means Anaheim will either have to back up the Brink's Truck, or trade him in year 5 or 6 of his contract rather than lose him as a UFA.
So either Anaheim finally pays McTavish for real, vs the Pat Verbeck cheap nonsense.
Or Anaheim loses a top level number 2 center right when the team might be a contender.
But then quality second line centers are a dime a dozen. Right VC? Right TML? Right MTL?
In simpler language, McTavish is playing for his NEXT contract.
Which will NOT be with Anaheim.
👋👋👋
I didn't even think about Tampa getting Copley means that Vasy is maybe not ready, I was thinking it's to get rid of Johansson.
Wow I'm a huge lacombe fan but even i think that might be a bit much
Seider contract looking better and better with all these lesser defenseman now signing for more money.
No joke in the best kept secret never heard of him lol
If Cooley stays the flames got a Bay Area crease lol
When I saw 8 x 9 I was concerned as a Ducks fan but I was glad to see that we got him for 8 so there is some slight confliction in my thoughts for that contract
Very smart move on the ducks’ front office. Lacombe is Avery mature, big and physical. Just such a coordinated defense man! Go ducks!
It will be interesting to see how fans view this deal if LaCombe is a good defender that ultimately tops out as a 40 – 50pt guy.
I’m a happy Ducks fan.
60 career points for Lacombe, not saying he isn’t worth it but that’s quite the bold move by the ducks.
Suddenly, Darrell Nurse's contract isn't looking so bad. 😮
Hype Diary Day 11: Insisted that preseason games mean nothing. Spent the evening yelling at my TV.
It’s going to be bad for the ducks. If he doesn’t perform well in all those eight years people are going to criticize him like they criticize cam Fowler
Watch big head hockey's breakdown of Lacombe and you'll understand why he got the contract
I remember everybody bashing bouchards contract now seeing luke hughes and lacombe contracts theres no way anybody could say it was an overpay. Could be argued he took a little discount actually.
