Should the #minnesotavikings regret picking #jjmccarthy over #samdarnold? | THE HERD #nfl

Is it too early to question what the Vikings did letting Sam Darnold go? Sam Darnold was great in Minnesota. Much better than I think JJ McCarthy could ever be. I’m going to defend Minnesota. Once you draft a quarterback like JJ McCarthy in the first round, are you going to cut bait? What are you supposed to do? Not play him? He’s played a couple games. What are you going to do? They wanted Darnold, but they wanted him on a discount. They liked Daniel Jones. They wanted him on a discount. Well, Daniel Jones wants to start without JJ McCarthy breathing down his neck. And Darnold wants to start. So, I don’t blame Darnold. I don’t blame Daniel Jones. And I don’t blame Kevin Oonnell. You got to play him.

  1. They didn’t know Darnold was going to have the year he was going to have and they already spent not just a first round pick, but assets to trade up for him. Minnesota understands they can’t just draft a guy in the top ten and make him ride the pine for 3 years just because Green Bay did it with guys they drafted in the mid 20s.

  2. When you have a QB help take you to 14 wins, you keep him. They should have signed him to a 3 year deal w 2 years guaranteed and continued to let JJ learn. Call it the Jordan love treatment. Then you start JJ when you think Darnold isn’t better or isn’t good enough. But my guess is he would have been good and now the Vikings win 8-9 instead of 11-12

  3. Why did they "have to" play JJ McCarthy? Should they have gotten rid of AVG or Greenard too? Because they "have to" play Dallas Turner as the starter since he is a 1st round pick (one they traded a lot for)?
Darnold is a talented 27 year old QB that won 14 games and meshed great with KOC, his year 2 would've probably been even better. McCarthy is an injury prone, noodle armed game manager project of a QB that KOC has to change his whole offensive scheme for and spend two years polishing him. It was a huge mistake.

  4. Not at all it should have been questioned immediately. You move on from a 14 win QB for a rookie coming off injury. Who in college barely was allowed to pass. Whose success will forever be tired to largest cheating scandal in NCAA history.

  5. The Vikings were banking on the idea that JJ McCarthy has a higher ceiling than Sam Darnold. I know that is true. However, they also knew there’d be more Growing Pains than dealing with Kirk Cameron with JJ. Plus Sam truly stunk it up those last two games as a Viking because of his high TT number. If Sam had gotten to, oh, the NFC Championship Game they would’ve resigned him most likely. But as it turns out it appears that JJ is injury prone. I’m not sure we should call Sam “Glass” like Samuel L. Jackson in “Unbreakable” but it’s near that point. My guess now: JJ will have a very short career as he won’t be able to stay on the field. But it’s very unlikely the Vikings could’ve predicted this outcome. I never saw it either.

  6. Supposedly Colon Cowherd is now calling “Danny Dimes” “Danny Dollar.” Makes sense. It’s been rumored that Danny puts a dollar bill in his belt and says, “You know why I do it? All you can eat for under a buck.” (I knew this guy that did this joke about 35 years ago. I don’t think it would fly today.)

  7. Desperation that the terrible vikings gm Kwesi drafted jj McCarthy trying buy him sometime and when the his best draft pick is a kicker is easy to see why jj McCarthy is a nice kid but frankly not anything but a lower level starter that all anyone that has eyes can see.
