Did Doug Christie Reveal His Rotations at Sacramento Kings Training Camp? | Locked On Kings

Today at Sacramento Kings training camp, Doug Christie gave us a pretty big glimpse of what his potential rotations will be. Plus, the third unit defeated the starters in five on five thanks to Devin Carter and Maxim Ray No. I’ll tell you all about it right here on Locked on Kings. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor and reporter for ABC 10 News. Day four of Kings training camp was once again lively. Yesterday, day three, we walked into a full team scrimmage, five on five and and everybody else was was there as a sub for either the black team or the gray team. Today, we walk in and and the Kings practice facility has two courts parallel to each other. On the far court, the gray jerseys are playing the blue jerseys. And on the court nearest to us, which is the court we primarily focused on, was the black jerseys playing against white jerseys. Four different groups. And it was pretty easy to separate those four into their potential rotational um groups. I suppose like the black squad, the the team wearing black jerseys, they are the clear starters and they’ve been wearing black all training camp long. It’s Dennis Shruder, Zack Lavine, Demar D Rozan, Keegan Murray, and Deont Sabonis. The starting five as we expect it to be. No surprises there. The gray team is who we believe the second unit to be. And wearing gray today again playing on the far court was Malik Monk at the point, Keon Ellis at the two, Kings rookie Nick Clifford at the three, Dario Sarich at the four, and Drew Eubanks at the five, the backup center spot. The white team, which is what we believe the third string to be, is Devin Carter as the point guard, Isaiah Stevens as the two, although Stevens can also kind of run point, Doug McDermott at the three, Isaac Jones at the four, and second round pick Maxim Reo at the five. And then the blue jerseys are mainly the two-way guys. Daquin Plowen and then Dennis and Dylan Cardwell. Also, Terrence Davis was wearing gray. So, I don’t know if Terrence Davis is potentially part of that second unit group, but I don’t I I was a little confused by where Terrence Davis fell uh in in everything. But again, this is as of now what I believe the rotational groups are. Doug Christie says he wants to have a 10-man rotation. So, a main starting five, and we know who they are, and a main bench unit. And I think the top eight was pretty solidified in the starting five. Malik Monk, Keon Ellis, and I think Nick Clifford. The backup four and the backup five spots were the ones that we were a little iffy on. And it looks like as of now, the front runners to to be in that rotation, be in those spots off the bench, at least going into next week’s Wednesday preseason opener against the Toronto Raptors, seem to be Dario Sarich and Drew Eubanks. Now, Doug Christie did share with us today that that later on in training camp, he’s going to want to interchange and intermingle and intermix these lineups more to get guys playing with each other because, of course, Malik Monk is going to play with the starters a lot. Keon Ellis is going to play with the starters a lot. Nate Clifford should probably interact and work with the starters a little bit. So, it’s not But right now, it’s very clear Doug is figuring out his groups and especially with his starting five. He wants his main five to play together as much as possible and get as comfortable as they can together. So immediately all that stood out to me. And then like I told you, the main game that we were watching was the fiveon-ive game between the third unit and the starters. This game actually went into overtime. They did a sudden death o death death overtime period. By the way, there were real actual NBA officials in uh training camp today. So, that was another fun little element. And the reserves, the third unit actually defeated the starters. Devin Carter hit a game-winning three to uh on on the first possession of overtime. The I mean, the the starters, the black team didn’t even have a chance to respond. The Maxim Reno beat uh Deonta Sabonis for the tip and Devin Carter dribble the ball up, step back three, game over. So big shot there by Carter. Carter looked pretty impressive. He also had a couple of uh of buckets earlier on uh in the five on five scrimmage. I thought Maxim Reno had some really impressive moments. Had a really good pick and roll moment with Isaiah Stevens. um knock down a a a three-point shot himself, like a straightaway three uh himself. So, good to see that from Maxim Reno. It does seem like more than likely to start the season, Reo will be on the outside of the rotation trying to fight his way in and Drew Eubanks with his experience will hold down that spot. But that doesn’t guarantee anything for the full season. And I would hope that Maxim will get a legitimate opportunity to break into that rotation at some point this season. But again, we’re talking day four of training camp. So, all of this can be changed easily between now and the Kings season opener against the Phoenix Suns later this month. Um, there were also like, believe it or not, the biggest standout moments for Zack Lavine were on the defensive end. Yesterday, Zack Lavine had a couple of defensive moments, good defensive moments, including a steal. today. Uh, Zack Lavine got his hand and deflected a pass that would have gone to I think it might have been Devin Carter or somebody who was wide open in the corner. Lavine uh did well. Quick reaction time to deflect that pass. Didn’t result in a steal. The ball went out of bounds, but Doug Christie was was thrilled with it. Very, very happy cheering on Zack Lavine uh with that that play that saved a wideopen corner three. And then later, Zack was guarding Devin Carter one-on-one and stole the ball from him. These two possessions happened in pretty quick succession of each other. So, we’re seeing Zack Lavine step up with some good defensive moments in these two glimpses of of Kings five-on-ive scrimmages and action that we’ve seen over these last two days. And with defense being such a major talking point and 94 feet and buying into Doug Christiey’s system, to see Lavine, who is not known really at all for the defensive side of the ball, him making an impact defensively in both of these scrimmages simply by just making effort plays, jumping into passing lanes, go using that extra burst, going that extra effort to try and bare minimum deflect a pass. That’s really encouraging. In fact, I I asked Doug Christie about that and you’ll hear Doug Christie talk about that uh later in the podcast. I want to have you hear from Keegan Murray first, though. Keegan, for those of you who are concerned like Matt, the starting unit lost to the third stringers. How is this not bothersome to you? You’re going to hear Keegan lay out here that before this last game, which was the very last game they played, they let us in at the end of practice. So once this game was done, the entire practice was done. But Keegan does share that that the starting unit ran the table aka beat everybody else uh earlier on uh during the practice. So I’m not overly concerned about the starters losing to the reserves. In fact, you want your second and third strings and and those units to win those games every once in a while to one prove that they’re worthy competition and are actually making the starters better and two to show that they can make an impact on games with that second unit. So Keegan uh will talk about losing to the third unit. He talks about the starting five coming together uh and even how he’s being used more on offense. Take a listen. I think everyone’s trying um everyone’s trying to pick up the concepts uh trying to pick up uh be aggressive offensively, defensively, things like that. So, um I feel like there’s not one person that’s been lazy or lack of effort and I feel like that’s a good sign. Your score loses to third school. What kind of goes through your mind? How long do you kind of wear that for? Uh, I mean I think you guys saw the last one, but before that we ran the table. Um, but I mean feel like that just shows the depth that we have. Like our young guys have been really good. Um, and things like that. So, and that means they’re getting more comfortable, which is a good sign. I mean, does it give them like a confidence? I mean, you were kind of in their situation. Maybe not third, but you know, a moment like that. What kind of confidence do you think can you give out? Yeah, especially guys in their first training camp. Um it’s a big confidence when you’re beating guys um that have years in the league and things like that. So um I think it’s a good thing that they’re able to compete with us. That shows that uh we have depth that we can go to at any point. So how is that starting five unit? I know Dennis is new, but getting more acclimated with Zack and then D Rozan. Just how do you feel about that starting five and how you guys finding? I mean we’re putting in new stuff which is good. Um a lot I feel like there’s more movement going around and things like that which we didn’t have last year. Um, so obviously with Dennis being back, um, obviously he was at the Euro Bask and things like that. So he wasn’t with us the past two weeks and, um, he’s still getting used to everything, but he’s been doing a good job. It’s been fun playing with him so far. Offensively, what is your role? Is it more coming on the show and then pulling up for three and maybe driving lane if they if they go after that or just what does the new offense look for you and what they’re asking for? Just be aggressive. um they’re using me more than they did last year, especially coming out of the corner and in transition and things like that. So, there’s not like a specific thing like you got to catch and shoot off a DHL or anything like that. It’s really just uh use my talent and ability to get a basket, get downhill, get fouled, hit, knock down a shot. Um and just different things like that. So, you guys you about how you guys are playing defensively right now? Like are you noticing the physicality? Are the things that kind of happen to you guys? Yeah. Uh, I mean, you see different guys trying, which is the biggest thing. Um, trying to slide their feet, stay in front of the ball and things like that. So, um, and obviously with Dennis, it helps me a lot in the starting unit to pick up four court, disrupt the ball handle, things like that. So, um, we’ve seen improvement. Um, at this point, it’s just going out against someone else and going out against the opponent, not obviously making that happen in in in the game. So, um, you can’t really just do it in practice and not do it in game. Last season you had a pretty extreme level of defensive responsibility. Are you expecting that same level or are they easing off on that side to allow you to do more on the offensive end? Uh I think with Dennis obviously it helps. Um I won’t guard as many point guards as I did. Um so um obviously they’ll be versatile in where I guard obviously the best player on the court. Um but obviously Dennis is able to do that too. So it’ll be interesting to see once we get into the season. I like too that Keegan pointed out a couple of times there how he’s getting help on the defensive end of the floor. I asked Keegan like, “Does that mean that there’s less on your shoulders defensively, which allows you to have more energy to do more on the offensive end?” He still said, “No, I’m still going to be most of the time guarding the opposing team’s best player. That’s still my responsibility.” But having Dennis Shruder there helps me with having to pick up full court. Helps me with having to guard point guards. Uh, so Keegan Murray getting that help on defense hopefully will open up more opportunity for him to to be aggressive on the offensive end, and it seems like he’s been pretty aggressive and has answered that challenge from his teammates and this organization uh so far in this first week uh of training camp. We’re going to hear from Keon Ellis in a little bit. Plus, of course, you’re going to hear from Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie. That’s all coming up here in just a second. Before that though, I want to let you know that today’s episode of the Lockdown Kings podcast is brought to you by Monarch Money. Didn’t really get to see Keon Ellis play too much today. the game that he was playing was on the opposite end of the court and ended before the the the main game that we had talked about earlier happened. Uh, but we did get to see Keon play a lot next to Malik Monk yesterday. And and when I look at this bench unit or what we believe this bench unit to be, Monk, Ellis, Clifford, Sarge, Eubanks, like Monk is probably like he’s going to captain that second unit and have a ton of responsibility with that second unit as the point guard and the ball handler. But Keon Ellis, when I look at that second unit, I think, okay, where’s the scoring going to come from? And I think Keon Ellis is going to have a pretty significant offensive responsibility in addition to being uh the the defensive nightmare that he has made a NBA career out of to this point. How good he is as an onball defender and how good he is stealing and like playing the passing lanes and coming up with steals. Um I’m really looking at Malik and Keegan or Keon, excuse me, to lead that second unit, be the main featured pieces of that second unit. Keon talked about the responsibility of the second unit. Also talked about everybody, the entire team locking in on the defensive end. I think the attention to detail, I I think that’s there. It’s really, it’s been there. Uh, what is the other word I want to use? Um, we’ve been going really hard. Um, every team’s been, you know, giving each other good looks, good games. So, um, I think, you know, with the new stuff that we’re trying to to put in, you know, we we’ve given ourselves a good look at, you know, how we can improve and, you know, how things are going to how the offense should be ran, how we should be playing on defense. So, um, I I think that’s what’s been been really good so far. You and Malik seem to be captains of that that second unit. What do you make of that group’s ability to come in and change a highly impact game off of the advantage that you guys will have with them? Um well I I think you know kind of in the in the second unit your job is to you know just um hold whatever the the the first unit that’s kind of created for you or you know fight yourself back into the game. So just be that that spark off the bench. And so I think you know I mean we all know what Malik does and know the spark that he brings off the bench. So, um I mean with with me being out there with him, I think, you know, I’m just trying to not just him, but I mean the whole second unit itself, just try to get everyone going and you know, make sure we’re playing the right way, everyone’s in the right spots and and things like that. So, uh I think that that could be good for us. How do things look and feel defensively compared to a year ago? Um that’s a good question. Well, I mean, it’s it’s still training camp a little bit, so you know, guys get tired after a while, but um I think and we’re trying to play a little bit different. So, um, but it’s it’s been good though. I think we know everyone’s really trying to to bring it on that end so far. So, um, you know, he wants us picking up 94 ft, playing physical, making sure we’re touching people. Um, so I I think we’ve really done that, uh, to a good a good job of that in, you know, the couple of practices you had. I got You say you guys are trying to do some things different defensively. Like, can you elaborate on that? What’s different? Um, I think just certain situations like not overhelping when you know you don’t need to to give the other team advantages. Um, and I think the the picking up 94 ft, he’s really trying to emphasize everyone picking up 94 ft. I mean, it’s tough, but you know, that’s kind of what you have to do to win. So, um, that and you know, being physical, making sure on on every catch, you know, you’re you’re up, you’re you know, getting a hand on them, so you know that they know you’re there. Definitely your presence. So, um, those are the three things off the top of my head for sure that I can I can name right now. Of course, it’s not like a hockey situation where there’s going to be the starting five all plays together and then substitutions happen and the bench five all plays together, but Keon will have more responsibility on his shoulders than ever. And it goes back to what I asked Keon about um or on media day about like what’s the next evolution of Keon Ellis’s game. He’s established himself firmly as an NBA rotational player. He is going to get everyday minutes with this Kings squad. He is without a doubt top seven most important player on this roster. But taking it that next step further and of course there’s the defensive responsibilities and defensive identity that he seamlessly fits in with. But on the offensive end, as great as he was as a three-point shooter, it was so catch-and oriented. And Keon shared with us again at media day that a lot of this summer he was working on like creating his own shot and shooting more off the dribble dribble versus just the catch and shoot threes that I he primarily got last year. So I’m very curious to see how Keon improves his offensive bag in addition to what we know he can do on the defensive end. And one of the strengths of Keon is hopefully going to be a strength of Nick Clifford, which is you can plug him into any lineup and he fits, he works, he adapts, he knows how to play with any lineup. And Doug Christie like has such an ace up his sleeve with Keon because you could sub Keon into that starting group easy. You could uh like fluctuate two or three of those starters with Keon at any point and I think it’ll work and be more than effective. So, a really valuable asset uh for for Doug Christie to have off the bench. Like I said at the top of the show, this episode of the Locked on Kings podcast is brought to you by FanDuel. Finally, let’s hear from Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie and and the main things that I want you to focus on and what Doug’s going to talk about here is my question that I ask about like Zack Lavine and and the plays that Zack Lavine’s been making defensively, how he’s stepped up and Doug is going to talk about not just Zack but the other veterans really buying in in that sense. And then Doug gives some pretty glowing reviews for Maxim Reno, Nick Clifford, and especially Devin Carter. Take a listen. Max, how are you looking out? Max Max has done well, man. I mean, he’s a super skilled big man that has the ability to do a lot of different things on the floor. You know, in the in the mind like he’s a sevenfooter, but in many ways, you know, can you play him at four? Can you play Domas at four, play him at five? You just, you know, there’s a lot of things that go through your mind. You got to see him out there. here. I mean, he’s going to have to adjust to the physicality and all the different things that a rookie has to adjust to, but been super excited to watch him continue to grow from the summertime to now see the plan like get earning room, you know, it’s it’s that’s going to be an endgame thing when we face competition that doesn’t like you, you know, like watching him out here. He’s done a really really great job. We’ll probably mix up the lineup some as as we go through camp and some of the practices so that we can get a look at different play people playing in different lineups, but um it’s hard it’s hard to say that because some people are gamers, you know, they not great practice players and get in the game and play well. He’s been great in practice. He talks at a high level. His communication skills are great. Um and I think the teammates love him. I mean, his passing, his shooting, everything he’s done well. What spots on the floor do you think Dee uh is realistically maybe going to be able to give you minutes and and is he kind of establishing himself as a rotation guy already? You know, I I think all the perimeter positions. Um you know, like do I see him playing some point guard? Yes, because of his skill set, but that’s you know, he’s also got to be out there with the secondary ball handler because, you know, I was a rookie and I could do all those things. But when you go out there and you know you look in front of you and it’s like mooky block you’re like oh god. So you know he’s going to be facing guys it’s good for him to face Dennis in practice because that’s about as high a level as defender as you’re going to see in the NBA. So that’s what I mean by iron iron sharp as iron. His skill set says to me he can play all the perimeter positions. Glimpses we got of five on five seen Zack make some pretty big defensive plays where you celebrate with him. What have you seen from him stepping up on that end of the court? I’m just super excited, man. Like, he’s been challenged and he’s accepted the challenge. Like, that’s what a real pro does. And then, you know, his teammates get to watch him do that. And he’s not the only one. Demar’s out there playing defense. Like, everyone are they always picking up 94 ft. I had a clip of of him today picking up 94 ft and we all, you know, smiled and and had a laugh. But that’s what winning habits, that’s what those are. Is it always going to happen? No. But if Dennis is picking up 94 ft, well then you need to be in that 70t zone so that the pass isn’t advance up the side of the court. Those are winning habits and those are the habits that we try to, you know, make sure that the guys are focused on, locked in on, and all of them are are willing to try to do everything that they can to make those happen on a daily basis. So, um, as a coach, it makes me excited. That’s that’s what what do you have to see from him from summer league to now and where you’re trying to see him take that next Deon has grown immensely since summer league to now. I’m like listen like the kid he’s in way better shape. He’s understanding and reading the game better from the point guard position. He’s beginning to to understand the things when you’re at the free throw line. You’re already calling out the play. You got something in your mind. What are we running on defense? Making sure that everybody’s set. Those are the responsibilities of a point guard and a guy like Dennis is going to help him too because he’s not he’s not a natural point guard but you know he’s going to play that position sometimes. His gravity on the defensive end is always felt. Um and he’s fearless like he’s not scared of the moment. So all those things put together usually creates a pretty good player in the NBA. I was on DLO and KC on ESPN 1320 Sacramento radio here uh yesterday and they asked about Devin Carter and I shared that I felt like if Doug Christie has a 10-man rotation I’m pretty positive I know who number 11 is. It’s Devin like he’s just on the outside but he’s also going to be the first guy that gets the call and gets the opportunity when Doug needs to go deep into that third unit. And then I watched Devin had the day that he had today or at least the scrimmage that he had in the five on five and it’s further proof of like yes like the the opportunity is there for Devin and he’s clearly working hard. Doug said he’s in the best shape he’s he’s ever been in way better shape than before. It’s nice that Devin is actually getting a real NBA training camp which he never got as a rookie. So he was behind the eightball the entirety of last season. He’s got those natural defensive instincts that like Keon Ellis, I think are a seamless fit into that side of the Sacramento Kings identity, but he’s still playing a position, the point guard position, that’s difficult for anybody to learn at the NBA level. Devin Carter is going to get his opportunities. It might not be right out the gate. It might not be with the second unit right away, but Carter has to stay ready because he is going to get those opportunities. And the same way Keon Ellis made the most of those opportunities to work his way into the position that he’s in right now, I think that door is going to open to Devin at some point this season. And this Kings team is veteranheavy and in the now, in the short term, they’re pretty solidified with their top guys. But this team is also looking at this roster and looking towards their future and going, who’s going to be a part of it, who’s not going to be. And Devin Carter, I think this season has a really, really good opportunity to play his way into that vision for Scott Perry. And I’m rooting for him. I really am rooting for him. I think he could be a nice talk about an ace up the sleeve like Keon Ellis is. Devin could be another guy that I remember talking about this when he was a rookie that Doug Christie can unleash like as a Tasmanian devil. Hey man, go in there and be disruptive on defense and look for your shot offensively if you can generate it. I think Devin Carter can do that and he’ll get the opportunity to do that this season. That concludes day four of Sacramento Kings training camp. Day five is tomorrow, of course. Yes, I will be there in the Kings practice facility for that. I’ll bring you uh everything that I see that happens from there. 1. Curiosity is building but it's early we still don't even know who will make the final roster. If Lavine will play defense DC should be the coach of the year or the decade. I could see a slightly larger rotation early with the young guys getting some minutes while the older guys save some minutes for later in the year

  2. Not liking the idea of Saric and Eubanks being ahead of Isaac Jones at the 4. Those two are complete scrubs. Jones at least has shown some signs of life, including a nice summer league.
