AJ… then king and Ohearn. Love Yu but hope he retires
Edit: I mean extending AJ is priority #1
I think laureano stays. They should pick up his option. I hope they resign king, the rest can go. There will be a lot of money off the books, aj should cook this off season, not in a flashy way but in a smart way to make the roster deeper. I believe he’s gotten better as a gm. Also the team is positioned much better for this upcoming season than last with more money available.
That starting rotation looks horrendously bleak without Cease and King.
Edit: I don’t think we end up resigning either King or Cease as they’ll command too much $$ or too long of a contract for our ownership, but if I had to choose between the two, I’d rather King. Sue me
We can fill the pen internally, not worried about that (remember, Hoeing and brito were injured all year, got bradgley, etc). At minimum one 2-3 starter is needed, and then hopefully a bat. If we’re lucky, 2 starters and a high end bat

Weak SPs
That bench definitely needs improvement, imo.
I wouldn’t be mad if we used Tatis to replenish. Sue me
Luke warm take: Arraez
Hot take: add in Suarez
Flowing lava take: also add Cortes
On that list I think Diaz is the only one who stays. Whoops and Laureano for sure.
Priority in order:
• Starting Pitcher (we don’t know what we have with Darvish, Musgrove coming off injury, Sears didn’t show much)
• 1B – need power/slugging out of this position
• utility player – for the inevitable injury
• reliever – fill in gap of Peralta. Miller new closer
• back up catcher
Personally I’d take a stab at negotiating with King to keep him on his mutual option.
The unknown going into his 2024 season was whether he would be durable enough to be a starter since he started as a reliever. He proved he was in 2024, but you could argue he created some uncertainty in that department in 2025. Convince him to pick up his option as a prove it year, and if he does great then he makes big bucks in 2026.
A couple other random thoughts on this:
– I’d keep Diaz around as the backup catcher. For as bad as he was in the first part of the year, I felt he got better at the plate later in the year when we wasn’t playing as often, and Pivetta likes him.
– I’d make an offer to Arraez but it has to be team friendly. If he doesn’t bite on that, let him walk.
– I would make an effort to resign O’Hearn and make him the every day first baseman and/or find another guy to platoon as DH with him. Power hitting lefties and the Petco porch play well together.
– I’d try to resign Iglesias – he ended up being a good glue guy for this team, and personally I think the loss of Solano and Peralta from last year’s team was felt this year.
– Let Suarez walk, evaluate either Miller or Morejon as a closer or maybe even look at the FA market for one. With Morgan blossoming and Adam coming back next year, you have a stockpile of riches all under contract in the pen.
– In the Free Agent market, I think you need to find a starting pitcher, a big bat, and possibly a utility guy or two. It will be interesting to see how McCoy and Wagner look in spring training next year, as that might negate the need for utility men.
They need to add a top 3 starting pitcher type. . Pivetta, Musgrove, King or TBD, Vasquez and Darvish/Sears
And an upgrade in the lineup (1B and/or DH with some power seems obvious with Arraez & O’Hearn being FA).
Eat some salary to load Jake.
I fucking love Arraez, this makes me so sad
I wanna bring back O’Hearn as the everyday 1B
Keep king, Laureano, Hearn and iglesias
Hadn’t seen next year’s team out together but honestly doesn’t look terrible, beside rotation lol
Along as Peralta is gone I’ll be happy
Tyler Wade is worth a roster spot just for the vibes and maybe that’s why we lost in the playoffs, let’s get him back on the bench with extra Gatorade coolers available.
I don’t see them passing up Laureanos option, a big part of why they got him is because there was another year of control, ohearn was a bonus which they thought would help with the post season push to add some slug.
I bet Wandy options back. I doubt he has a huge market if he opts for free agency.
Nestor Cortes didn’t help his value with his performance this season, I doubt we try and get him back.
I don’t see Suarez staying his market will be too attractive to pass up. With Suarez leaving I don’t think they convert miller to a starting pitcher, we would need a closer and he is the best reliever/closer we have.
I bet Diaz comes back as our backup unless they want to give campy a full look at catcher or Salas is healthy and ready to try out in the bigs. Diaz has a lot of value to the padres purely because of his familiarity working with our pitchers, so if there isn’t a better option he is easy to slot in and good chemistry with our pitchers already. Fermin will obviously remain our starter over any of the above Catcher options, I don’t seen them picking up Maldonado again.
Cease will go elsewhere, I cashtros have a hard-on for him and I’m surprised they couldn’t get a deal done for him at the trade deadline.
King might stay I think he has a lot left in the tank but injuries kept him mostly off the field this year.
I doubt we can afford to keep O’Hearn but I think it depends on what they want to do with arraez. I love arraez would love him to stay, I know a lot of people dislike him but those people suck. If arraez goes maybe they make a play for O’Hearn at first base. Who knows, maybe they don’t want to pay either of them what they can get in free agency and there will be a hole at first base to fill. They do have will wagner who shows promise and plays infield, but I’m hoping they get someone more of a sure thing.
Iglesias might come back, I don’t know his market but he has been a great utility player, he is getting older and might want to retire to his pop star career though, so who knows.
First base and the starting pitching is really where all of the critical holes that need to addressed. If they don’t try to get back arraez or O’Hearn they will need a 1st base. And with losing cease, king and even possibly darvish if he decides to retire, it leaves us with pivetta, vasquez, Jp sears, and Kyle hart as are current starting pitchers. Musgrove might be finally ready to comeback next season though which would be a step in the right direction.
I trust niebla to get whatever pitching lineup together in tip top shape for next season, that dude is the pitcher whisperer.
There are less critical holes to fill this year which is nice, hopefully the guys we have locked in can work through their hitting issues and come back better next year.
Some people will hate me for saying this but I think Cronenworth needs to go. Defensively he’s good but offensively he’s trash and very inconsistent.
Keep King, Ohearn and Laureano. Maybe Iglesias and Arraez too but on very team friendly deals for locker room vibes. Everyone else can go.
I would also seek to dump Yuki and do SOMETHING with Campy other than up/down the minors/majors.
JP I am unsure of but I was not impressed with, maybe he needs time with Niebla and this offseason might convert him into a consistent 5 spot in the rotation.
I also feel some moves are needed at the coaching level, specifically anyone involved in our batting.
I’m optimistic with all the money we free up, we can build depth and with AJ at the helm and his tenure with us, he’s learned a thing or two that can benefit us.
My major FO concern is willingness to spend under the new regime. Hoping, AJ gets free reign with little interference. Regardless, all of our questions will be answered by Dec. I just don’t want to wait like last off season when we basically made moves at the 11th hour and all the talent was kinda gone.
are you serious? Laureano is in LF my dude. no question. Gavin will prob get a chance to be the guy at 1B. Dylan, Luis, O’Hearn, Suarez are all gone forsure imo from our starters
i hope they bring back King and Elias.
Wouldn’t mind giving up Tatis or Manny for either someone who can hit the ball or someone who can run at a decent speed.
The entire hitting coach staff
Starting Pitching is an obvious concern.
First base needs a power upgrade.
Need a strong utility infielder (if there is such a thing).
A second catcher and a DH that can hit lefties and provide power
Victor Rodriguez better be the first one.
Think cease is gone
Think Darvish will retire
O’Hearn is going to want money and didn’t probably appreciate being bench
Luis arreaz is gone (thank god)
I don’t want Arraez for the sole reason that Shildt will just continue to stick his ass in the two hole and Tatis won’t get anything to hit again next season
Hopefully Arraez because he fucking sucks
Our best season was 2022. No matter what changes and signings we do, we won’t have a close chance like 2022. We gave up all our prospects to be wiped out in a wild card series this season.
Bring back king, Hosmer’s been paid and we no longer owe him money thank God! Fermin is under contract till 2029 or something like that, gives Salas time to develop and not be rushed. Laureano’s club option should be picked up. Miller should be the new closer, Suarez has a player option, if he stays cool if not thank you for everything! I think we bring back sheets as a cheap piece off the bench. I’m sorry but we got to let Arraez walk. Yuki and cronenworths contracts are terrible and unfortunately yuki has no trade clause, but if we can do something about cronenworth that would be amazing. If ownership doesn’t cheap out I would love to see them go after Alonso or Kyle Shwarber! We need someone who is like laureano and Merrill that plays with heart and doesn’t show emotions on the their sleeve. Jose iglesias was cool but I would take Solano or Peralta from the 2024 seasons over him. I think we should offer Nestor Cortez something see if he will take it just to help starting pitching out, if not thanks for the help this 2025 season. Somethings got to be done about tatis and machado they need to sit those two down and have a talk about their piss poor attitudes. Lastly all I wanna say is X earned my respect dude did not do well his first 2 seasons but he really woke up this season even though he went through some injuries
