How Mac Jones’ performance for 49ers impacts Brock Purdy | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
M. Jones. I don’t know what a word you could give him for what he did last night, but whatever it would be, give it to him. He was banged around. He was limping. He had that moment where and it looked like his brace was like cutting into his skin or something. I I didn’t think he’d injured his knee. The way he was reacting like the brace was causing acute pain for M. Jones cuz then when he got up he was able to run off the field. He got battered. He got bruised. He was like I they kept showing the video of him. Look, he’s not moving. And he’s not moving. Yeah. Like it looked like he was done for the night, but that’s that something happened to that brace. He’s holding the brace. He and he had been limping before that. He had a PCL injury. He was off the injury report this week filling in for Brock Party. and he had an arm injury. They were working on the arm later in the game. And then at the end of their drive in overtime and this would have been a reason to kick the field goal and dare the 49ers to hold it together for one more drive cuz he was getting blown up all night. At the end of that drive in overtime, he was like ready to puke on the field. It’s like, do we really don’t need to see M. Jones wretching? Like are you trying to capture the moment when everything he ate for the past 18 hours escapes his body? Do you really want your audience to see that? You could see the mouth. He was he had assumed the position. I don’t know if anything came out but he had assumed the position. Uh we all know the position due to one of various ailments whether viral or or uh external or something else. We we all know we all know or or viral or viral or colts [Laughter] something. But uh I I got I got a ton of respect for him. And after the game, let’s let’s uh let’s hear from what M. Jones had to say after the game because I have some thoughts to share about M. Jones on the other side. I don’t really pay attention like too much to it. I don’t really do like social media that much, but Kyle like came up to me and he was pissed about it. So, he’s like, “Dude, I I can’t believe like they they moved us like underdogs again or whatever more.” And I’m like, “I don’t know what that means really, but like, yeah, let’s go kill him, you know?” So, he was pissed about it. I was like, “Yeah, I’m pissed, too.” So, went out there and we started hot, but we definitely need to be more like consistent throughout the game and give more points for our defense so they don’t have to keep making stops. He played his ass off, man. um was unbelievable in the first half. Um got banged up a little bit there um in the second half and battled through it and um protected the ball going against that defense and throwing the ball that many times and not having a turnover and um protecting like he did. I can’t say enough good things about Mac. I screwed up the throw as I often do. He was talking initially about the fact that they had gone from three-point underdogs to eight and a half point underdogs while he was wearing the suit. the suit. I I think he purchased at auction from Tommy Lee Jones after playing Twoface in one of the Batman movies. I think that’s what that was. Wow. That was a pull. That was a pull by my son. He noticed that right away. Tommy Lee Jones is Twoface in one of the Batman movies with the uh It’s an interesting choice. Look, I I Hey, and sockless, too. Hey, let’s not forget about with the the sockless uh the sockless uh look with the loafers. I mean, it’s a whole thing. That’s very aggressive. That’s aggressive for M. Jones. That that’s that’s wild. And the bottom line is it worked. And he’s got, you know, he’s got a lot of he’s got a lot of luggage there for a football game. I And I know, you know, a guy have a bag, but he’s he’s like ready to he’s ready to go away for the weekend. I don’t, you know, it’s just may maybe the mini buy starts with a a trip straight to Cancun. I don’t know. But he deserves it. He was incredible last night. And, you know, I’m usually the one that’s trying to stir up the trouble. I thought it was funny that Al Michaels was openly talking about a quarterback controversy for the 49ers. But, but how can you not when we consider that M. Jones is the guy? Many believe, many are saying M. Jones is the guy that Kyle Shanahan wanted when they traded from 12 to three in the 2021 draft. And that someone talked him into Trey Lance in the same way that someone talked him out of waiting for Kirk Cousins in 2018 and accepting Jimmy Garopppolo via trade in 2017. They talked him into Trey Lance, but now he’s got M. Jones. And M. Jones is 3 and 0 as a starter this year. and they pay per, you know, I was one of the ones saying, just like I had said when the Rams were getting ready to pay Jared Goff, don’t do it back in 2019. Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Why are you doing it? Why are you giving this guy a market level deal? Now, he has become a much better quarterback since then, spurred in part by the fact that the Rams got rid of him because he wasn’t living up to the market level deal. But I was saying the same thing about Perty, like $50 million, $45 million, what are you what are we doing here? What are we doing here? If Brock Party’s a free agent, what’s somebody going to pay him? Okay, then that’s what you should pay him. Uh, and now they’re stuck because they can’t get out of the Party deal until 27 at the earliest. But M. Jones is performing better right now. And and I know part of it injury, but M. Jones injured and he’s still going. And I there’s a toughness there. There’s a grittiness there. There’s you know the the whole thing in New England, you know, you know what happened there. Yeah. It’s really and and then and I don’t know they they got something with M. Jones which gives them a problem with Brock Party. Mike M. Jones has been a philosophical fit with Kyle Shanahan for a long time. Before before that that draft before the M. Jones in the 2021 draft. If you go back and listen to it, because a lot of rumors were flying about uh what San Francisco was going to do, they had already made the trade up to three and nobody knew uh you know who they were looking at. They’re looking at M. Jones looking at another quarterback. What are they going to try? Are they going to try try to trade up again? And if you go back, there’s an interview where M. Jones is asked about Kyle Shanahan. This is he’s not even drafted yet. And he goes on and eloquently breaks down Shanahan’s offense. I mean, in great detail. This is a college student. Oh, he’s after he’s, you know, post he’s he’s a he’s a tweener. Okay. He’s after college, but before pro. And he is talking about Shanahan’s offense like he’s a five-year veteran in it. So, I think he understands what Shanahan wants to do, and his skill set is really built for it. He we know what his limitations are, but it doesn’t really matter uh in in Shanahan’s uh with Shanahan’s vision of what he wants his offense to do. The other thing, you know, you mentioned your son mentioned a movie earlier. I’ll mention another movie. Mac. Jones is a modern-day Uncle Rico. Remember Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite? Uncle Rico. Yeah. Always talking about the glory days. Hey, I could have been this. I could have been that. M. Jones deserves to say that because he really had his career derailed. I don’t say that lightly. I think that’s exactly what happened. His career was derailed by Bill Bich’s decision to put a defensive coordinator as his offensive coordinator in year two. We always about the year two jump for quarterbacks. So M. Jones goes from Josh McDaniels in year one and he is in the rookie of the year conversation. He was one of those pro bowlers after like, you know, two guys, three guys fall out. So, he’s a pro bowler. It was, you know, an asterisk with that. And he goes from that to Matt Patricia in year two. And his career really wasn’t the same because he’s out of New England. He goes to Jacksonville, dysfunctional situation there, and he finally winds up in a in a good organization in San Francisco. Well, and I remember vividly when Bill Bich had the bright idea to make Matt Patricia the offensive coordinator. I said, “If this was any other coach, the overwhelming reaction would be, has he lost his mind?” Right? And one of the things, and I was hearing bits and pieces of it, and we were doing some reporting on the stuff we could confirm, but one of the things about M. Jones, M. Jones wasn’t taking Bill Bichc’s and that’s what contributed to the rift and whether it’s complaining to ownership about what Bellich was doing, popping off, leaking to the media, which is the the worst thing you can do in a Bellich regime, doing anything he can to try to win this battle and Bellich, you know, retaliating against him and it becoming personal and it becoming petty to the point where they had to move on from M. Jones. I give M. Jones credit. You I this guy’s screwing up my career and good for him to push back against a tyrant because at times Bill Bich and a lot of football coaches can be this way. He was a tyrant and still is. So, uh and and it’s funny because that that demeanor that we saw at the press conference, it belies a fire in M. Jones that comes out on the field and in certain circumstances behind the scenes and they they they compared him to Eddie Haskell last night on the broadcast which most people have no idea who Eddie Haskell is. That’s right. And they mentioned that too. I used to watch Leave it to Beaver in the mornings before like I would watch as much of that half hour as I could before I had to get out the door and rumble my way up to school. Back in the days when we walked to school, we didn’t have very far to go. But Eddie, that’s not a compliment to be compared to Eddie Haskell. Eddie Haskell was a two-faced, which would explain the wardrobe. He was conniving, assissing. As soon as Mrs. Clever walks out of the room, he’s got some scheme that the Beaver and Wall-E are going to be the victims of. So I but but and I say all that because, you know, M. Jones will say all the right things now. He just wants to get some wins for Brock. You know what M. Jones wants. That’s right. M. Jones wants to throw Brock party overboard. Wants the job. And I think he has found the place. We’ll never know, I guess, the real answer what Kyle Shanahan wanted to do, but he has found uh he has f he has found a likeminded uh coach uh to play for. M. Jones has. And if you if you put him in the right situation, he’s perfect. You can’t ask him to be don’t you can’t ask him to be one of these uh quarterbacks who will beat you with his legs and uh can can throw the ball, can make all the throws. He can’t make all the throws and he’s not all, you know, he’s not slow, but he’s not all that fast either, but if you put him in the right scheme, he’ll do great things for you. Like if you go back, Mike, and look at his last season, I know he had an all-star team. He had one of the great seasons in college football, in the history of college football. And that last team he was on, of course, he had Devonte Smith and Jaylen Wadd and Naji Harris behind him and just an incredible offense, but in the right situation, and San Francisco is the right situation, he could be more than competent for you as a starting quarterback. He has had an amazing ride, too. I think back to Alabama and we were talking about this last night. We were watching the game and football’s a very visual sport and how guys look in their uniform is so important. I mean, he looked like an overfilled sack of potatoes at Alabama and then he shows up in New England and he looks like Superman in this sleek form fitting uniform and now I don’t know what it’s kind of like dad who came home after a long day of work at the office. That’s kind of the vibe he gives off. And like he’s just lost 20 lbs and he hasn’t gone out and gotten new clothes to fit him right. Like it’s all just very kind of disheveled and this sleeve’s ripped and he’s you know he doesn’t have he doesn’t have the ass to fill out the back of his pants. That’s that’s an observation that Chris Sims usually makes and the shirt’s too big and it’s it’s like somebody needs to go up to him and just like here come here let me straighten you out. I mean at one point his pants were down. I mean just fortunately he had pants on under. Um, but he’s just I there’s something about it that works. It works because he wins. And last night, I think they can build on that. And you know, yesterday I said, and I own it, one of the reasons I picked the Rams to win entering the season, both teams I thought were or could be in the Super Bowl window through four weeks. Even though the 49ers were three and one, too many injuries, they’re not in it. The Rams are. Now, after last night, I don’t know what to think, but if they ride this M. Jones Express, this thing could keep going because the I don’t want to overstate it, but last night’s game is the stuff that starts to build a guy up to the status of badass legend. Like where where’s the is there a moment that Brock Per’s ever had like that that we can think? Is there was there ever a time when Brock and maybe I’m maybe I’m missing it. Yes. But was did he ever have a night like last night? Probably because think about it what we said about Pertie when he started what did he win his first, you know, eight, nine, it was some ridiculous start. never like last night where he was bowed and bruised and wretching and you know I there there was just something unique and special about last night for M. Jones and I don’t remember that ever happening with Perie because if it had happened I’d remember it. It was and and I think it was going it wasn’t just Mac last night it was Mac doing exactly what you said and then the team being banged up. So this is one of those nights for organizational depth. They’re they’re excited. Kyle Shanahan’s talking about the spread. Pierall’s out. Jennings is out. No KD. They got all these injuries, no Pretty. And they go on the road and win a game uh with their backup quarterback. So, that’s one of those things where you say, “Okay, that’s where our season.” If if they wind up getting to the Super Bowl or winning it, they’ll go back to last night and say, “That’s where it turned. That’s when we knew we had something special.” Well, they didn’t go on the road. They visited their their second home. They went to the suburbs. They went to like many rich Northern Californians, they have a second home and they spent some time in it last night. Hi, it’s Mike Florio. Thanks for watching PFT on YouTube. How Mac Jones’ performance for 49ers impacts Brock Purdy | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC https://www.youtube.com/NFLonNBC

Hmmm…Niners O-line has been near the bottom of the league for 3 years and Purdy getting hammered back there…yet every play is a 4-5 read play. With Mac it was 1 to 2 reads and out. Kyle needs to pull back the playbook till the O-line can protect…Purdy will again be top 5 in the league in QB ratinmg….didn't help last week as 6 Dropped passes by Niners receivers.
I was pleased to see Mac thrive and excel in this game. I knew he would be a baller under right system.
I think Niners are stuck with Purdy because he has a no trade clause I believe! Or something like that!!

That’s what a backup is supposed to do.
Mac Jones doesn't impact Purdy at all. Mac Jones was brought in to be a backup and signed to 2 years specifically so he could become a tradeable asset if he performed well. It was a win-win for the 49ers. It was like when they've taken a flyer on Arden Key, Chris Omenihu or Chase Young. Take a risk on the talent and if they help now and get paid later by someone else, there will be a kickback for it. Does this make this year interesting? Yes, but more for whether or not Purdy can rest and get healthy, not as much for when will Mac sign a new contract with the team. Now…with that being said, if Purdy didn't play for the rest of the year and Jones ended up with 4,500 yards, 35 touchdowns and less than 10 picks…maybe that would cause a stir, but with the 9ers having a last place schedule and the Rams killing themselves the whole night, I wouldn't say last nights game made for a controversy going forward.
If Purdy was a first round person this wouldnt be a issue. Purdy is better than Mac.
Come on and stop it Purdy is a great QB he's going to come back soon there's no impact if Purdy start's or Jones
As far as the moment that Purdy defined himself during his first starts… I'd say it was all of them. Just the fact that he was playing well AND winning was the definition of his rookie season starts. A team with super bowl hopes lost their starting QB of the future for the season and then their last hope in their backup. Once Purdy walked onto the field there was no fan thinking we'd be making the NFC Championship game at that moment and he not only made it happen, but if he didn't have his elbow blown out on the first drive, the 9ers would've definitely beaten Philly and his whole outlook would be different because he would've probably been the only QB to make the SB in back to back seasons.
At this point, it doesn't impact Purdy at all. Mac would need to show a helluva lot more to "impact" Purdy's spot at QB1. I'm glad for Mac tho – he showing toughness and resilience, and probably playing his way out of a backup role, like Darnold did – but for a different team.
There is no controversy. They're not going to pay 2 guys. Mac Jones has earned himself another job somewhere else next season as a starter. Pittsburgh might be a good spot. Rodgers may retire, and if not in February, than certainly the following February.
no way brock earn the spot we love what mac is doing but don’t disrespect purdy like that he made his name yall forget he took us to the sb? and championship game in his rookie year?
Niners overpaid Purdy. If Max continues to shine and crank out wins, Shanahan will have a very tough decision to make.
0:36 How about the no-call pancake flop on Mac? Arms and legs back like he was skydiving…
Florio acting like he didn't see the 2023 nfc championship game
Kind of ironic how Brock took Jimmy's job due to a foot injury and how we see almost the exact same thing playing out where Mac is taking Brocks job due to a foot injury. Funny how the universe works
the 49ers need 2 decent QBs becasue the Shanahan system gets them injured all the time …
And I’m glad Brock started last week when played them lol I was so happy when I saw Mac wasn’t starting 😂
I can't believe they gave Brock a max contract – I'd rather have Mac jones
Mac jones is better than Brock purdy – he's better in this system he's more reliable and he's less risky
Media aren’t intelligent enough to do anything but try to stir the pot in order to make ratings! That goes for sports and news media both! Pathetic! As a former athlete, nothing is better for the players or the coach than having solid players behind the starters. It lets you go all out!
3 good starts a bad 3 years does not undo
They cannot pay Mac even if you want them to. If they release Purdy post June 1 in 2027 the 2028 dead cap is 40 millions. Mac is not waiting until after 30 to get paid.
When Bill Belichick decided to make a defense coordinator in charge of the offense he should of got fired!
Remember when Purdy was in the Super Bowl and his entire arm was ripped apart and he still stayed in because they had no more backup QBs? That was a pretty impressive display of grit.
I would try to trade Purdy never been a fan now Mac I’m a fan
He’s getting screwed on his contract 7 mil for 2 years and he outplays Purdy who is too short
sounds like mac jones is getting an audition for next year
Eagles beat both these teams
Us Niner fans call Sofi stadium "Levi's South."
Joe Montana was replaced still in his prime. NO ONE is above it!!!! Your eyes tell you Mac Jones is better than Brock Purdy. Because HE IS
Happy for Mac. I really thought that the Rams were gonna destroy the Niners. I was very wrong.
Why are you pulling the plug on Purdy?? I easily see Mac going somewhere else and being the starter.
Rams record against SF is not good 😐
I don’t know who is better but I KNOW Brock is not 40M better than Mac which is the reason Purdy should have never got paid. Just because Purdy was a fast starter does not mean we had to let Deebo go to pay him unnecessarily. Purdy last 17 games he is 9-8 with 17 TDs and 16 INTs. That is not a 50M QB… sorry
Mac Jones had a calf cramp
Mac was tough as nails last night! And how huge was getting Kendrick Bourne back?? Clearly their time together in NE payed dividends.
4-1 baby! ❤️💛❤️💛
Jones is a great backup its Purdys team plain and simple as normal you got it wrong.
if the 49ers make the playoff's, it's one and done.
let’s just take it down a notch ok …. media does this all the time …. was a great win he did what he needed to do the entire team did what they needed to do stepped up and got a win as back ups. let’s not make this bigger than it is ok!? …. enough.
why don’t we talk about the defense, everyone talking about Mac Jones like he won the game …. the DEFENSE WON THE rest of the night was field goals other than the first half …. if Purdy played this game like ma. jones they would be saying that he had no production in second half and it was all d😂dense lol …..come on man. Cool your jets guys. Brock is still the guy.
Florio and Simms have written Purdy off since day 1. Day. 1. First rookie to beat Tom Brady.. NFCCG as a rookie, Super Bowl as a sophomore.. written off.
brock and mac are the same player but only one is overpaid.
There is NO PROBLEM!!!!! What Mac Jones is doing does not mean that there's dissatisfaction with Brock Purdy. What it means is that Jones has been in the league for awhile and therefore has the experience necessary to perform as he has done. That's it. Mac's next stop should be with a team like the Dolphins that uses the same system as Shanahan.
As a 9ers fan, I get tired of Shana-man's conservative play calling, 3 runs up the middle to give the Rams the ball back with a minute or whatever left? 9ers got lucky first with Alfred's punch at the goal, and then stopping Rams on 4th and 1, thanks to a bonehead play call by McVay.
Stop with this ridiculousness. Brock is a proven G.
"Throwing the ball that many times, without a turnover." – is a shot a Brock
One of the three people in the media who was right about the 49ers drafting Trey Lance, David Lombardi, said there is no evidence Shanahan wanted Mac Jones.
Mike Floria said Matt Flynn was a Hall of Famer.
Yes yes can we call this team America’s team? Now!!
