Avalanche Hand Stars Their First Loss of 2025 Preseason | DLLS STARS POSTGAME

I’d like to use a couple cwords. So would I. Trust me. So would I. So we got to do a show. That certainly was a preseason game. What else can you say except at least it didn’t go to overtime. Thank goodness. Let’s do it now. Postgame show. DLS stars. We’re going to talk for an hour about what? Find out. We don’t know. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] certainly was a pre-season game. This is the DLS Stars postgame show after a 41 Colorado Avalanche win over the Dallas Stars. Stars first loss of the 2025 preseason. They are now 3-1. Sam is drawing on a marker board. We just Can we just introduce ourselves for about a half an hour? I’m Sam Nestler, DLM. That was awesome. Something else. Yeah, like that wasn’t a good game, right? We’re not just like exhausted and they had this wasn’t a very good game. 15 shots on goal for the game. They had three in the first period and actually had the the best scoring chance of the first period. You guys remember Trey Taylor just all of a sudden buzzing down the left slot wide open and Wedgewood making a nice save. He does do that. That was the best chance of the opening period and the Avalanche had two power plays. He does that well though. I will say Trey Taylor has a very good knack for jumping up in the rush and his skating is very underrated for when you watch him play maybe you don’t notice it and then he gets those chances and he’s really able to jump up in the play. So, uh, he’s someone we will definitely keep an eye on because he may be L is looking at my hangman board, but he may be someone that’s a potential option here in the future. T, this is great. We haven’t even been drinking. We’re just silly. Oh, look at that. Nice. We got a couple S. Okay. I’m not sure why. What made you think of butts? I don’t know. Oh my goodness. Ladies and gentlemen, every Saturday, that is what Saturday is all about. So, that was too quick though. I was supposed to last the whole show. That did not nearly kill enough time. Okay, let’s talk about special teams for a minute because the Stars could not stay out of the box. They weren’t so special. They weren’t. Now, 0 for seven. The Avalanche power play was atrocious as well. They went 0 for seven. Can you even say that their penalt I mean look their penalty kill went seven for seven. But I mean the shot attempts were atrocious for Colorado. Let’s you said something interesting to me after I think it was the first period or maybe it was the second. They had the lead and you go Jared Bnar’s got to be happy with this either. Yeah. I don’t I don’t think either coach is going to be jumping up and down about the game. I mean, obviously anytime that you win a hockey game, he’ll find a couple more positives, but for Gully um and his coaching staff, it’s going to be a tough one. I got a positive for Jared Bedar. He gets to drive home tonight. He doesn’t have to get on a plane and fly home, so he’ll be home faster. Yeah, that’s it. Yeah. Where is the fake Jared Bedar tonight? That’s right. From the playoffs. Uh was he watching that preseason game? Is he a DFW resident? I think so. I’m assuming. I’m guessing. Yeah. I don’t know. Do you think fake Jared Bednar makes a regular season appearance? I feel like that’s a playoff bit. Don’t know. I don’t know either. We’ll have to find out when they come to town. All right. Only 55 minutes more to go. Um I mean, as we go through this, I guess you could say, “Hey, you you killed off their penalties, but you know, no, I’m not trying to chirp Nathan McKinnon. He’s an allorld player. He’s one of the best out there.” He didn’t look like he was trying overly hard tonight. No, he’s going to get a game or two in and you just want to get him more. Yeah. I mean, for the veterans, that’s what they want. And sometimes young guys are trying a little bit too hard, you know? I mean, they’re trying a little hard to impress, especially on those type of players, right? They’re trying to make a make a statement with a big hit on someone like that. What do they get out of that, Luds? In all reality, like if you’re Nathan McKinnon, which team? No, but if you’re Nathan McKinnon or David, what do you get out of those games? You just have to play. Yeah. You know, I mean, you know what? You’re getting some timing back. That’s about it. And you’re and really the timing isn’t, you know, even close to what it’s going to be because he doesn’t have a full slate of his guys in the lineup, right? And he’s playing with guys that probably don’t know exactly where he’s going to be all the time and he’s a lot of times guys like that, they’re they’re trying to set up the younger guys, you know, they’re trying to defer a little bit and get them going. But, um, because McKinnon didn’t have his normal seven to eight attempts, you know what I mean? Um, I thought they moved it around the per I thought on their power play they were moving it around the perimeter, but I mean Dallas really moved it around the perimeter. I mean they just they killed their own power play. There was one nice play in seven eight no eight seven for Colorado and one for Dallas or did they have two? I don’t even remember. Did they get a second one? Yeah, they did. So in in nine power plays Nate McKinnon’s backhand saucer pass across the ice. And that one you you don’t even think it should get through, right? because it really went through a couple of the Dallas defenders. But I mean again yeah elite players make that and that did that go to Lechan. So no it went to Olison who shot and then Lechan got the rebound um and didn’t score on that one but boy that he just he faked like he was going to do something on his forehand pulled it to his backand and opened up a lane that shouldn’t be there. Yeah. You know what great players make great plays but those kind of players can get away with those even if they don’t work because the majority of them do. Yeah. And the coaching staff is okay with them doing that. They they don’t get held accountable like some of the other players do. When you look at this one, and we’ll break down the goals in the second and third period. We’ll talk about it in our next segment for sure, or even later in this segment if we completely run into a brick wall here in a minute. How do you assess a game like this at all? If you can you because I mean coaches have to take stuff from this because we talked about all these players. We talked about all the ideas of things, guys trying to get jobs or trying to make a statement. I I think as a coaching staff and and and Jim and those guys that are sitting upstairs, they’re going to evaluate their younger guys, that’s all that game was for. I mean, did they, you know, did they accomplish, if there’s a list of five things that you look for, did they get to at least three of them, you know, or was it just one of those games where the travel, the altitude, the whole nine yards, you know, maybe that plays into it for them? But but regardless, I I think that what they’re they’re at the point now, in my opinion, they know what guys they’re looking at. you know, there’s still some guys that could probably pop up, but I think by now they’re keeping an eye on, you know, the two or three forwards and maybe a defenseman or two that they can put in some certain spot, whether it’s a new guy playing down in the minors or or a guy that you’re looking at, this could be a potential call up. You know, we keep talking about Ernie. Is he continue to do his thing? And regardless of how the game goes tonight, did he, you know, do the same kind of things he’s done in the previous three games? What did you think about Ernie’s game tonight? You know, to be honest with you, in my opinion sitting here, um I think we were watching more football than we were. I’ve got some plays drawn up, but I they’re kind of third and long plays. Got quarterback sneaks on his board there. So, ask Sam that question. Sam, what do you think about Adam Ernie’s game tonight or the running RPO on third and long? Yeah. No, Ernie Ernie was one of one of few that stood out a little bit to me. uh in a not negative way, right? That there’s a few that I could definitely point out that had a tough night, but he just he does the same things every time I watch him. That’s one of like same thing we talked about with Bastion where he just you just know what you’re going to get. He just looks I think he won a few faceoffs. Um chipped Ernie chipped a couple pucks. Okay, he didn’t win a couple faceoffs, but chipped a I was just looking at his statline when he said that. I had to He goes to the net a little bit. He’s just a guy that you know what you’re going to get from him. So that’s about all I got out of it. I mean, you look at Rekovian, he he played 19 minutes. Uh Lynn probably played 15 16 minutes. Ernie played nine. Yeah. So, and and that, you know, doesn’t mean anything, but maybe they’ve seen Well, he wasn’t on special teams very much. Well, I mean, hopefully that for his sake, they’re going, we kind of know what we see from him, what we’re looking at. Maybe there’s a couple other guys we’re taking a look at. Let’s try to get I mean, from Gully standpoint, is there somebody, you know, I I think Rakovian is someone that they they obviously got to be looking at. So, um, he got a few more minutes tonight. And I thought Lind was was pretty good tonight. There was there was one coverage thing that we talked about, but again, you’ve got guys here that that work hard. There’s no question about it. I mean, they work hard. Um, I but I but I don’t know for me if there’s anybody jumping off the page. Yeah. You know who uh what was a win tonight? Hits 31 to 30 down. All right. There seems to be There you go. a conscious effort as we were talking about all since Gully was hired in early July and Bastion led the way with eight. Yeah. You know, so I mean again Bastion again for me he’s doing exactly what they’re asking of him. He knows who he is. Um you know I if if I jump to to Nils I didn’t think he was as good as he was the previous game. Yep. The first game I didn’t think he was good. There was coverage couple coverage things. tough time in front of his own. Yeah. And and he and he shouldn’t he shouldn’t, you know, because again, you’re not playing against Yeah. the Colorado Avalanche, but um there were some things that he was kind of going the wrong way at times. And so what is that to you? Like is that because it wasn’t like he was just out muscled or anything. He was he was losing his place a little bit and kind of drifting. He was attracted to the puck. So it’s a puck watching more so than You guys want to joke that Ryan? Okay. So Ryan put up the uh Marshall second ch uh post where he said he goes trade Mo Robo and Wyatt for picks and that’s pretty funny except Ryan’s response was feet pics. We used to give free feet away at this studio when I was scolded of wear pants and don’t show your your bare feet. Yep. Now look at this. And I got made fun of and I got made fun of cuz my shoes were ugly. So, by whom is this okay by our fans? You look like you just bought new shoes today. These are pretty new. They’re not not today, but they’re new. You didn’t spill ranch on him yet. No, I did get them on my shirt, though. So, Tio sent you a a tweet earlier saying Sam needs to spill something on himself. It seems to be good luck. Yeah, that you did and it did not work. Yeah, it was before the game started, I think. Was it spilling ranch on yourself or was it kicking your drink? I didn’t spill anything. I didn’t drop any drink. I didn’t even bring a drink today because of that. The worst part about that was I didn’t even kick it over. Like we put it on the floor and you’re like, “You’re gonna kick that over.” And I was like, “No, I’m not.” I dropped my phone into my cup and it knocked it over. 18 paper towel rolls later. That’s right. He didn’t kick over his drink. He knocked his phone off the couch and dropped it into his cup. The phone at least got to go in there. So, how’s your phone? Is it working? Phone works. Yeah. My brother hasn’t called me during the show today. So, I don’t know how you managed to not drop your phone into the open drink and knock that and then it spilled everywhere. I do a lot of things that people don’t that was way more entertaining than most of tonight’s hockey game. So I like that. Only we had it on video. E Luds, I am not trying to pick on the kid, but I thought that Vladislav Kolanic had a tough night. I don’t think he looked like he was as dialed in and there were a couple of plays where he got caught and we’ll show it a little bit later on one of the goals, but No, we won’t. Is it hard? We don’t have that one. Oh, we we we say we didn’t. We have one of the goals. The one that Brian quit after the first one. Okay. Well, maybe we’ll just talk about He says, “No, I have no more time.” Is this Is this hard for our producer, our fourth producer now has No, I got no more. I’m done now. I’m done with these guys. No, let’s see who we have on Monday. Ryan wanted to see if we can leave by 9:30. That was his goal. Oh my god. I just said to him, I said, “So, the second goal, the second goal here.” He goes, “No, no time. I have no time.” That would have been awesome if you said, “Can we That was in the second period. You want to get that one?” No, I don’t. I don’t. my third period. Third period. You had You did come up with a good thumbnail because of Led’s uh banner suggestion or whatever he called it. Okay. Are we almost there? No, we’re getting there. All right, let’s talk about these goals real quick. So, second period, it was like Stars had three shots on goal in the first. They had one good chance. We We could kill a couple minutes here because we’ve got this one drawn up. The first goal. First goal. So, first goal came after the Stars had a few power plays against and then it turned to this one for Gavin Brinley. Luds. Let’s go. Well, here here here’s the beginning of the issue. It’s it appears to be a oneon four as it enters the zone, but then where the the problems come into play is behind the net at Minnesota at Minnesota game 32. Game 32. All right. That’s what I thought. Um, so behind the So, and again, if anybody listened to the pregame show, I was really pumping up pro. I like Petrovic. So, unfortunately here, he does not get any piece of anybody behind the net. And he’s not the only one. So the first one rolls off a pro and then Strangus comes in to help and he doesn’t really do anything also. And so there’s two of them that end up getting caught behind the net. But you can look at the shaded player which is Lynn. And what happens is what Lynn needs to do is when he comes back to the front of the net, right thing to do. We talk about the house all the time and that’s that little area in the hashmark area and he needs to get in your stop. Well, he doesn’t. He just kind of swings out. Now he’s on the outside looking in. Pro loses his guy. Strand just doesn’t do anything. And then it’s Coco Gabana here in front of the net. Like like he he has does not have his head on a swivel because now all of a sudden this little pass comes right to the front of the net right behind Koko here and Linda’s already swung out and then we cannot find the puck and it ends up being in the net and it’s one to nothing for the Os. What? Let’s for real your Coco Cavana aside, what does Patrick Vic do better there? Is he just off the wrong angle? He didn’t go in and he appealed. He didn’t go in and pin and seal. That’s what it was. He needed to go in. I I don’t think he doesn’t get away. I’m guessing he saw the puck and he tried to make a play on the puck and but he’s got to be the second guy in. I mean, it’s kind of like uh you know, two guys are meeting at the same time. You want to make sure as a defenseman you’ve got him against the wall instead of the reverse, which he does. And then he just and actually he’s he lost he goes to the other side of the ice too and he loses another guy again. Yeah, cuz Strandas is on his right. Yeah. So that that just was a poor play all the way around. And those are the ones you’re kind of hoping at times after you as a defenseman, you make them little boo boos. You want your goalender to bail you out and that didn’t happen either. So that was a tough one to After the goal, the Stars had actually three good high danger chances. First, Nathan Bastian was open in the slot. Adam Ernie found him with a nice pass, but it was stopped by Wedgewood. Then Justin Mitzgoian gets free behind the defense somehow. Not saying he can’t, but just that the the ABS defense completely decided to abandon the front of the net as they entered the zone and Wedgewood made another really good save. And then Sam Yeah, with less than 3 seconds to go in the period, the Stars scored and it looked like the Avalanche decided to do what with that little time left. They changed the forward. It’s hysterical. They’re all coming back. Strange is basically on his own stumbling and bumbling over into the blue line and everyone in the Colorado just bailed and he just took the shot. Switched off and said, “Well, that’s the end of the period.” Yeah, we’re not a lot of great decision- making going on in the game. What I did like on that one is is it was Lynn that was driving to the net and he kind of creates, you know, difficulty for the goalender because he takes his defenseman right to the front of the goalender’s eyes and so it acts as a screen for him and I thought Strang Baron was a defenseman I think Strangos was up against and he actually uses him for a screen too. So it was a it was a Yeah, it was a good shot and he didn’t try to do anything but get the puck to the net and he did and it was perfect timing when Lynn came through and you know I think there’s two younger guys there. One recognizes get the puck to the net. The other one says drive to the net and he ultimately probably didn’t get a point on the play or no maybe he did make that pass. I remember strangest but if he didn’t it’s one of those kind of assists that you don’t get credit for. By the way, Sarah like Wyatt’s assist in the chat. Yeah, we have some debate about the pronunciation of foyer foyer. Sarah says both foyer. Sarah says both are are correct. You can say it either way. You can say foyer too. Bud says foyer is not correct. I appreciate your French style. That’s and then Ardell did pick up on you quoting Barry Manalow lyrics and really seemed to enjoy that as well. So, all right. Become a big Are we there yet? No, we got five more minutes. Okay. Oh, man. The Stars had seven shots on goal after two periods of play. They had three in the first, four in the second. Somehow they had they were being uh outshot 13 to7, but they had a 4-1 edge in high danger chances. They actually when they did get a shot, which was rare sparingly, it was pretty dangerous. Wedgewood did a nice job. Made a couple actually really good saves. BBO made a couple of nice saves. He I don’t think he was overly tested, but he made the saves he had to make. Wedgewood also got clocked by Adam Ernie. He got run. Yes. And penalty for Yeah. But he embellished right at the end. But Ernie Ernie did went straight through the crease. So the two goalies uh both were replaced for the third period. Remy Porier in for Antoine Bibo and Trent Miner in for Wedgewood. And then the goals started raining down. It started with Arturi Lechin scoring at the crease on a backhander. Guys, the Avalanche scored four times. I believe the empty net goal was probably the furthest from the goal line that was shot because the coverage was just it was it was the same thing. That was that was another Nils Lquist Scott. It’s the same type of thing and I wonder that’s why I was wondering what you think it was because he’s just not I’m going to tell you there’s a little bit of what happened last year what they played in their own zone came into play there. Well, Niels gets boxed out and you know he couldn’t he couldn’t get around but Bishell there was if Bishell takes a step he was he left the front of the net to go cover someone up in the high slot and so that was a little bit of the man-on-man from a year ago and he just couldn’t recover by the time he couldn’t get back in time to I told you you guys are wrong in the chat to says Rupert Holmes not guys not Jimmy Buffett Rupert Holmes sang the pina cola song and then Jimmy Buffett was was hamburgers in paradise Well, that that’s Jimmy’s brother. And then I think he’s Kayla says, “Is there a gas leak in the building?” Yeah, something something’s going on. Yeah, we’re loopy because of ridiculous boring preseason games. All right, so Lechinan scored. We talked about that. Then they get a power play and Lechinan actually had a really dangerous rebound chance at the top of the crease. Porier made a good save. I swear the Stars were going to just not try to cover Arturi Lechin from 10 feet in. And then uh Bardikov scored. Guess what on a backhander at the crease. This one was the Kolonic turnover. That was bad. Well, yeah, but Kolio Chanic goes in to the wall with Bartikov and ends up falling on the ice. Kolioanic sees a loose puck and he tries to just pop it to his centerman in the middle of the ice and I believe it went over to Lechan, right? Was that Lean? Yeah. Yeah. He So he throws it over to Lechan. there was no way he could cover and get back in time. So, um, that’s when you want your goalie to bail you out to be honest with you. I mean, those kind of things. Correct me if I’m wrong. Should he not have tossed a lobbing backand into the middle of the ice? He made a whole pass. Was there someone there? Well, there there was one there was an ABS player there and his his centerman, I believe, who was coming through was there also. So, this was going to be those one of those little area passes. So, is it out of the realm of possibility? No. But I think the odds are very much against him because that step from the AHL to NHL. They always say it’s hardest, Luds, to go from juniors to the pros or college to the pros. That that’s a big step. But I think AHL to NHL is still a really, really hard.
