BUFFALO SABRES VS PITTSBURGH PENGUINS LIVE 🏒 NHL Preseason Game – OCT 03, 2025

[Music] 6:48 is the time. We welcome you back here on the Buffalo Sabres pregame show. I’m Brian Kio. Thanks for being with us as uh we shift gears here from Mike Schop on the pregame. We bring Paul Hamilton in as the Sabres close out the preseason tonight in Pittsburgh. And uh Paul before we to your keys to the game, obviously the injury news, I know you talked about it earlier. Um really a downer. I was just talking about it with Zack Jones here during the break. Like just I know we you know we heard the interview with Owen Power. Like I was excited to see with that castle ring power second pair kind of work well together and the intrigue there hasn’t there wasn’t a lot of moves made this off season with I guess you’d consider to be you know above average NHL players. Castle Ring I guess was one of the only few that I was really excited to see here on opening night and now it looks like we may not get to see that right away. Now wait didn’t Zack Jones get waved and sent down to Rochester? What’s he doing sitting there with you? Uh he he actually was moved into the producer room in the WG control room. Yes. That’s how bad the Sabres didn’t want him. Or or is that the wrong Zack Jones? Is that another one? Anyway, yeah, it’s it’s you know, you’re you’re trying to change the narrative here and be a better team defensively. The guy that you really really wanted to get to accomplish that is now not going to be their opening night. uh your starting goalender who you were hoping is going to get back to what he was in the last half of the season two years ago. Uh and as Bulldog said, it wasn’t just a few weeks, it was, you know, 35 games. That’s a good sample of games where he played like a number one goalender and had some of the best numbers in the National Hockey League and now he’s not going to be there. So, it’s really I mean you’re t trying to change the narrative here and you’re trying to get off to a good start and this obviously does not help you do that. Correct. And of course, you know, the goalending thing as well. Paul Alex Lion going tonight and this I guess will be a tuneup for him to be ready to start Thursday in the opener against the Rangers. Yeah, he’s got to be ready. And well, I had said right, you know, right away when we started hockey broadcasts this year that and even during the summertime that, you know, Lucan has got a week or two and if he was back to way he was last year, you got to make the change. You can’t let the season slip away like they did last year when they didn’t win a game in 13 games and, you know, got three points out of a possible 26. That blew their season up and they were done. It was over. And they can’t let it just keep going and going and going. And if Lucin wasn’t where he was supposed to be, I would say you got to throw Lion in there. Well, they got to throw Lion in there and he’s got to be, you know, what what the Sabres think he can be and what he thinks he can be. So, you know, he’s going to, you know, get that opportunity and he’ll get a final tuneup tonight. Paul Hamilton here with me, Brian Coial, Sabres pregame. And before we get you off to Dan and Rob, let’s get Paul’s keys to the game. They’re brought to you by Rayax Honda. Rayax, we got this. Paul, what do you think Lenny Ruff is looking for for some keys tonight? I know he wasn’t happy with Wednesday’s outing. Yeah, I think part of the reason you’re not seeing a a heavy laden lineup is because he wasn’t happy. And it’s like we’re not finishing the preseason on this. We’re we’re not we’re gonna It’s like a doover type of a thing. It wasn’t good enough. They played like many teams play the last preseason game. let’s just get out there and not get hurt. I mean, there was no passion. There was really not much of anything going on except for maybe Josh Norris and Rasmus Dalene. So, uh, which by the way, I would have neither one of them in the lineup tonight. The Dene is not, but Norris is. I would not have the It’s kind of like the Josh Allen thing in preseason. I sorry, he’s he’s played his two games. He has five points. That’s good. We’ll see you on Thursday. I would not be risking him in a preseason game right now. I agree. Paul’s Paul’s Keys brought to you by RAX Honda. Rayax, we got this. Okay, we mentioned Lion Paul. He’s in goal and we know Jarry for the Penguins here. So, uh, let’s go here between the pipes here. Break down that matchup. Is Pittsburgh still going to be in trouble with their goalending this year in your eyes as we look at the Penguins here? Well, Jarry is okay. Yeah, I think they’re looking at what the Sabres are looking at. What do we got here? you know, can he be better? If you want to be a better team, he’s got to be better. If the Sabres want to be a better team, Lucin’s got to be better. So, I think it’s it’s, you know, kind of the same boat that both teams are in right now. J I mean, Jarry has played well at times in his career, but at other times he’s let them down. And, uh, you know, they’re in a bit of a rebuild right now. I mean, they’re Crosby I I think of the top three. Crosby to me is the only one that is still at an elite level. I don’t think the other two are even close. Um but you know they’re getting old in the tooth and uh you know they’re they’re rebuilding too. And Paul, a cool moment that maybe people didn’t see is that the Penguins had Mark Andre Flurry back for one game of the preseason kind of as a a sendoff. And uh I know uh it was a really really cool scene. That was about a week ago in Pittsburgh. But uh we know obviously he was a long time and and a very very strong fan favorite there with Penguins fans. Yeah. Good for them to do something. I’ve never seen that done before. That was kind of cool. I mean uh to to do that and and just let him say goodbye to the Penguin fans and you know the fans loved it. I mean so you know to do something like that for him and for the fans I thought was pretty classy. I agree. Paul, thank you so much. We will be talking throughout the intermissions and all the postgame. So enjoy period one. Okay, take care. Okay, great. Paul Hamilton with me here, Brian Coil as we are getting you set. Yep. The Sabres looking to close out the preeason tonight uh in Pittsburgh as uh Lindy Ruff hoping with a little better performance than that 5-3 loss the other night uh when the Sabres took on what I would consider to be a lesser NHL lineup uh than what Buffalo put out there. So maybe that’s why we’re seeing more of the regulars tonight for the Sabres. Okay, when we come back, uh, we’ll get you off for Dan and Rob as we’re getting you set for the Sabres and the Penguins. Final preseason game on the schedule tonight. We’ll have it for you just in a matter of moments right here on WGR. [Music] In Western New York, we get to the game no matter what. The Sabres and the Penguins going at it for the second straight game. These two teams played at Ebank Center in Buffalo on Wednesday night. The Penguins coming away with a 5 to3 victory in the game for Buffalo. Two goals for Josh Norris. He has been very very nice in terms of what we’ve seen from him so far in this preseason. Five points. Two goals in that game. Not five points in that game, but two goals. Five points overall in the preseason. Rasmus Dalene a power play goal for Buffalo and the Sabres end up falling five to three. But the bad news from that game Ukapeka Lucinan did not play the second period as he was planned to do so. He played the first 12 shots, 11 saves but did not come out for the second period and that set off the alarms. And then later after the game, Lindy Ruff uh confirming that Lukan had a lower body injury. today. He is telling Paul Hamilton and the rest of the media that it’s a different injury from the one that kept him out some of the early portion of training camp and preseason. So, not good news for Lucin and all signs are now indicating that it will be Alex Lion on night one next week for the regular season opener when the Sabres take on the Rangers. Speaking of Lion, he’ll be starting tonight’s game for Buffalo. Alexander Yorgv is the backup. We’ll see if Lion goes one, two, or maybe the whole game here tonight. Uh, a decent amount of regulars in the lineup for the Sabres, including Tage Thompson. Uh, he’s in the lineup. Alex Tuck, Jack Quinn, Josh Norris, and defensively, Bo Byum, who had been out a couple of games with injury. Uh, he is back tonight. Ross Dalene does get uh the night off for Buffalo tonight. All right, when we come back, we’ll get you to Dan and Rob and the Anthem from Pittsburgh. The Sabres and the Penguins closing out the preseason tonight. It’s coming up next right here on the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network. Be careful who you trust with your garage door. There’s a lot of fly by night companies out there. Here today, gone tomorrow. [Music] 7:05 is the time we welcome you back here along the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network. Brian Kio with you. We’ll get you to the anthem at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. in just one moment. Well, I mentioned a lot of the bigger names for the Sabres in the lineup tonight. Well, some recognizable names for the Penguins tonight. Crosby, Malcin, Carlson, all in the lineup tonight for the Pens. All right, that’ll do it for the pregame. I’ll be with you during the intermissions. For now though, to the anthem in Pittsburgh, followed by Dan and Rob with the call. [Music] Stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight. Or the rampards we watched were so gallently streaming. And the rockets regular, the bomb bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star spangled man yet wave. Or the land of the free and the home of the brave. Well, Razer, it’s time to wrap up the preseason here at Pittsburgh, a city, a town that you know very well. I’ve been waiting for six games for this game. It has arrived. Let’s get it going. Let’s get the regular season on the roll here. One last stop here in Pittsburgh. And hey, two good teams out there tonight. So, expect a big game here. Yeah, the Penguins, of course, with a lineup much different than what we saw in Buffalo the other day. Penguins of course won that game by a score of five to3 Wednesday at Key Bank Center. The highlight for Buffalo was the play of Josh Nor. Scored a pair of goals in that game. Both assisted by Payton Krebs and Rasmus Dalene added a breakaway goal on what was an effort in the preeason uh that was highlight reel for any time of the campaign. But now you’re facing Crosby Malcin Raquel Carlson Latang. And in that, the Sabres will have to face Tristan Jarry. So, a bit different test, but you’ve got Quinn Norris and Tage Thompson as the top line. And Buffalo from right to left to get things started working in the Pittsburgh zone. Thompson in front of the net. Norris trying to put it in his area, but the Penguins able to intercept. It’ll bring up ice by Achari. Drop it off. Raquel out there along with Crosby as the puck down in the corner off to the right of the net tended by Alex Lion for the Buffalo Sabres. Pass inside by Eric Carlson was blocked and it’ll be a change here for Pittsburgh as the puck goes back down there into the ice. 45 seconds in and Latang trying to find a way up ice, but Alex Tuck took the lane away. his linemates to start. Yuri Koulik and Payton Krebs. Penguins decide to shoot it in. Ryan Johnson trying to move it up the wall. His partner Connor Timonss, the former Penguin as Yuri Koulie takes the pass in across the Penguins line. Tipped by Timonss down to the corner. Mon is there. He’ll leave it in the corner. Penalty coming here. Yuri Koulique is going to the bench here. He’s holding his face. He’s been over. He got hit behind the net and I think stick might have caught up and got in his face area and he is slowly making his way. You can see the remnants of some leakage as he’s making his way over there. Genny Melin is going to the box. Yeah, they came together in the corner. Penalty number 71. Double liner four minutes high sticking. So it’s a early double minor power play here for Buffalo. Well, this is a good opportunity to get the power play going. feeling pretty good about himself and getting a few pucks in the net and yeah just carelessly Melin just goes in and stick rides up Koulique Stick and then right up his body into his face and accidental just careless. So Byum good to see him back in the mix on this power play pass to Thompson back to Byum and a pad save made by Jarry and the play kicked out to center. Alex Tuck out on this power play as well. Jason Zucker standing on the left wall, feeds it down to the corner. Alex Tuck spins that to an open side of the ice and this is a free out for the Penguins. They don’t have to touch it and they’re able to change their kill unit. 30 seconds into the power play. A bump back from center and Buffalo trying to get on the same page here with the exit from their own zone as now Tage Thompson forced by Raquel deep into the Buffalo zone. Then the Sabres turn it over back to Raquel at the blue line who carries it down to the corner. He’ll play it back to the point for a shot by Latang that goes wide and the Penguins with more opportunities on the short-handed end of things than the Sabres with a man advantage here a minute in. Now the only problem here with taking a four-minute penalty this early in the game for for both teams is a lot of guys haven’t seen the ice yet and they’re going to sit there for another four minutes until they get that opportunity. your third fourth line never got a shot to get on the ice before this penalty was called. So second power play group out there now though for Buffalo is Danforth down to the corner along with Quinn and then Bryson steps up but can’t keep it in. And the Penguins come back on yet another counter pass trying to get to the middle of the ice from Justin Brazo is blocked and the Sabres Jacob Bryson will start back. He’s got two options to drop and from the red line he’ll do it. Quite the gap for the drop pass, but it’s taken fine here by Mloud down the left side. Tried to sneak one in on the near post. And even Jerry wasn’t sure where that one was. Yeah, just kind of one shot and done here. And Pittsburgh’s coming up with those free pucks and getting him 200 f feet. Really wasting an awful lot of time here. Down to two minutes already left in this power play. Gage Thompson comes over the boards back into the power play mix here. Look out of the bench off of his stick. And that didn’t miss George and company by much over there. Yeah, sometimes it’s not good to have a power play this early in it, too, because you really haven’t got a chance to get into the game. You usually like to get a couple shifts, get yourself feeling a little bit, all of a sudden, bang, after the first two shifts, you’re going on a 4-minute power play. You’re just not feeling it yet. And it’s exactly what the power play here for the Sabres looks like that it’s just not able to connect here, player to player, coming up through the ice. Passes are off a little bit and but on the other hand, Pittsburgh’s doing a pretty decent job here killing. Yeah. on these pre-season days as well. It’s you’ve not been in town for any kind of skate the day before. You fly in, you hit the ice for a warm-up and that’s it. Here’s Thompson on the left side. A minute 30 still remaining in this Buffalo Power play. No score. 1613 to go in the first period. Sabres work it to the right side of the ice. Back up top. Byum middle bump pass across. Alex Tuck had a free shot there, but he opted to play it off to the wing and that shot missing the mark. Yeah, up and out of play here. This face off I’m expecting is going to come. Oh, it’s staying inside. They’re saying it went off Jarry and up over the glass. So, face off to Jar’s left side there. Yeah. Yeah. He had a minute 19 left in Malcolin’s double miner for high sticking of Kuik. Zooker will step in to take the draw here for the Sabres. And it looks like Pittsburgh’s countering with Nola and off the draw. The puck the Sabres are able to tip it back to the point. Tage Thompson parked at the left circle. Right now Sabres possessing on the right side of the ice as they escape from right to left here in the opening period. Up top by shot gets through. There is a rebound there. Jarry makes the save and it’s behind the net for Alex Tuck out in the far corner with it. Backhand pass to the wall. Up top, Byum. Page Thompson near circle. 50 seconds to go in what was a 4-minute power play for Buffalo. And the Penguins will clear it. And Page Thompson here on this 4-minute power play has had a tough time handling the puck. It just seems like especially early like this, a little sticky still out there. You just got to make sure you get your spot, get your back turned to him a little bit. They’re coming straight at him, putting a lot of pressure, trying to take that play away. Here’s Mloud trying to use his speed. A dish off to the wing. A return pass for him will come all the way back to the point. 20 seconds remain of the power play. Middle lane is open for a shot and that dribbles just wide as Bryson let it go. Bryson again near circle. Quinn walks in, holds it deep at 10. Tries to stuff it in. Done. Had a chance in an empty net, but he was filled in in front of the Pittsburgh goal. Yeah, he’s still tied up here with Carlson it looks like in front of the net. They’ve separated and they exit the zone and Malcolin is out of the box having served his four minutes. We remain scoreless. Four shots for the Savers on that four-minute power play. Connor Clifton a little bump there on Kak going past the front of the Penguins net. Clifton with consecutive seasons. make that three years in a row with 200 plus hits of course the past couple with the Buffalo Sabres as Jarry covers up a slow roller to the front of the Pittsburgh deck. And Connor Clifton is wearing the familiar number 75 but now in a Pittsburgh uniform. Yeah, kind of expect maybe a freewheeling wideopen game here today. I think both teams got a lot of veteran players in these lineup. The last game for preseason for both sides, you know, they want to get through this and I don’t think it’s going to get dirty and nasty out there. I imagine they’re just going to let this go and play this game and see what happens. Sabres at 30 shots in the loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday night back home. Buffalo wins the draw here in the Penguin zone. It’ll come back to the point. Brian Johnson with a shot that comes out the far side. Raquel is on it for the Penguins and that puck lifted down the ice. Sabres out of the corner able to get out near center ice. There’s no touch. It’s going to be an icy call here against Buffalo as the Sabres face the top line for the Penguins here tonight. It’s Billy Quaven who gets the ride with Crosby and Raquel in a chance to show his wears. Yeah, just a little bit of panic back there with the puck. Johnson got a man allowed Crosby in behind him there. Goender had to come out Lions and play this puck back up the wall and then kind of a no look pass to somebody on the wall that was not there. So, just got to relax a little bit here. Just slow the pace down a little bit. Just know you’ve got a little more time than what you’re expecting in most cases. Another icing here for the Savers. Closer race for the puck there. Latang going back after. He’s partnered with Caleb Jones tonight. Eric Carlson, we mentioned also in the lineup. Parker Weatherspoon, his defense partner. And the face off in the Buffalo zone. We’ll see Latang parked at his familiar position back at the right point. Malcolin will lean in to take the draw. Brazo and Anthony Mantha on the ice. Former Redwing pick first rounder back in 2013. Time flies. Penguins win the draw. Sabres able to knock that attempt to the front of the net down, but no clear. And the Penguins look to work it out of the corner. Back to the point. They do. Work back down from Malcolin. pushes it up to the point. Sabres though with good position on the wall to center. Turn it right back over. The Tang trying to slide it through the middle of the ice. It goes all the way to the right wing deep in the Buffalo zone and the Sabres lift it up and out as they make a line change here and the Penguins bobble the puck a little bit on their own end. Caleb Jones right in front of his own net. He’s got Latang as the outlet to the right for Latang. up ahead now for Thomasino. Sliding that one down to the corner of the Buffalo zone. Sabres try to battle off the roll to win it back again. Penguins though able to play it to Connor Clifton to the far point. His shot ricochets to the corner. Battle stays along the wall. Pittsburgh able to come up with it. There’s a shot from the slot. That one stopped by Lion. Pittsburgh again working it to the front of the net. This time the Sabres able to break it up on the high slot to the line and out. But no possession for Buffalo as Harrison Brunick backs up inside the Pittsburgh line paired with Connor Clifton. He’ll escape back behind his own net. And now Pittsburgh with 1218 to go in a scoreless first period with Brunick carrying into the Buffalo line. He is stood up there as he gained the zone by Jacob Bryson. Sabres can’t clear and a chance in front for Achari. Staring down Lion and it stays scoreless as the Sabres get it out to center with two on the counter across the line. Third now enters trailing the play. Bryson a hot spot here at the blue line trying to keep it in. Penguins able to force it out. Here comes Carlson down the right side. Curls back to the point with it. He’s double team. Played back to Carlson. Slides it to the far circle looking for a man in front of the net. But Lion is there to scoop it up and hold on to it with a timeout on the ice. No score. 11:41 to go in the first here in Pittsburgh. You’re listening to the Savers Hockey Network. Relax at Rayax Honda. So far in this game, Buffalo had a 4-minute power play right off the hop. Malcolin with a high stick that got up on Yuri Koulik unable to capitalize. Although as Razer mentioned, they had some shots on four shots on that. They’re sitting at five right now. You know, you’re almost halfway through this period. Sers have only surrendered one shot. Here’s Zooker with a chance. Pass across instead of the shot. Not a bad idea on the pass. Just didn’t connect. Now Pittsburgh come back with three the other way. Latang trying to center. Buffalo on the counter with a turnover. Zucker carries it with Mloud to the net. Took the shot this time. Stopped by Jarry. Back to Ryan Johnson with a shot and that ricochets up and out of play. Good pace coming back the other way by Buffalo. Yeah, it is coming. Zucker does a nice job in the transition in the neutral zone. Takes his puck wide, allows him cloud to get to the front of the net and that opens up a clear lane. Every person on the ice went to the right side of the net and just left Zucker wide open. He was able to take that great opportunity and he was able to regain control of the puck for the second chance in that case right there. But just some really slack defensive play there by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Not anybody going to Zucker. Left them wide open. just wasn’t able to capitalize. Face off the Pittsburgh zone. Top line on for Buffalo. Ta Thompson reaching forward here on the left wing wall. Taps it down to the corner. We played back outside the line by Quinn. And now he’s got to get back and defend here with the counter by the Penguins. Look out as Lion gets pulled into by Philip Thomasino going to the net. Everything else, Lion, he’s getting rid. He’s fine from that. He had plenty of time to see that one count. Brace himself. And there’s going to be a penalty call here. I’m not sure if it’s going to go to the savers for taking down Thomasino as he was going to the net. If that is, it’s probably Bowen Bum is going to be the guy or they talking about possibly running into the goalender. It’s that’s probably the discussion. Was he tripped in, pushed in? 11:01 on the clock remaining here in the first and there is going to be a call here. The actions of the Buffalo player cause the Pittsburgh player to run into the goalender. The puck crosses the goal line. Therefore, we have a good goal. Oh, where did that come from? Well, from here, wherever that puck went over the line, it had to be underneath Alex Lion, so we couldn’t see it. I think what Thomas is got the puck and and as he’s taking it through the net, Bowen Byum knocks him through the ice and the momentum must have just taken him, the puck and everything right into the net and kind of a cheap goal. But I guess at least we got a good explanation. Got a great explanation from the referee. He laid it right out there and knew exactly what was going on. and and it’s kind of hard to see where we’re sitting up here and you really don’t have the replay, but it just kind of takes it into his body and when the momentum takes it right into line out Lion, the puck is right kind of underneath his backside and just keeps sliding in across the line and it’s one- nothing. Interesting play. You could tell Savers get a shot away on the counter as Ta Thompson has a rip at Jarry. Yeah, that’s Yeah, in that instance it certainly looked like Lion was really just in self-p protection mode. No, but he did say that the Saber player cost I to go out of control and take it into the net and that’s that’s justification for giving them a goal. And Christian is talking to the referee right now. He took that shot right side of the mask from Kate Thompson coming down the right side. It was was a good shot. Referee just making sure everything’s okay. Good news for Buffalo. Yuri Koulik is back onto the ice. Won the draw back to the point. Shot deflects wide. Koulique for the corner for Bryson. Working on the left wing wall in the Pittsburgh zone. Malcuit will chase after it. Koulique able to win it back again. And he bumps it back deeper into the Buffalo zone and turning with it. Playing it up is Payton. Krebs. Of course, Krebs was the one playing up in Quinn’s position tonight on the top line with Thompson and Norris the other night. So, each player getting an opportunity. Play to the Buffalo line. Sabres doing a good job standing up. They’re now making changes. And the Penguins wrap the puck to some open ice here. Ryan Johnson quickly gets it up ice. Payton Kred looking for the late man coming across the line. Finds him with a shot deflects wide. Ryan Johnson again back to the point for a shot and that one stopped. Lots of traffic in front of the Penguins Tristan Jarry. Puck comes outside of the zone and Connor Timonss last man back who carried in behind the net. Tommy Novak keeping an eye on him. Pass up on the right wing side. Sabres gave the line. Kak going to the net with Malenstein trailing. Penguins get it back again. And from behind the net, Latang now in the near corner just under the circle right side. Gets it up towards center. Novak plays it to center. Coming back towards Ben Kindle. Anytime you see someone wearing number 81 like Kindle is here in Pittsburgh, your mind quickly goes to Phil Kessle. You got to get Kindle into your mind instead of Kessle. Go number 53 Connor Clifton deep in the Penguins corner off to the left of the Pittsburgh net as the Sabres get it deep in the Penguin zone looking to tie this game. Shot from the point. Jerry waves at that one. Byum getting some help and he’s backed up at the line by Mloud who threw it down around behind the net. Goes up and out of play and we get another timeout on the ice. So, it’s a crash the net goal by the Pittsburgh Penguins that has them up one- nothing so far here in the first. You’re listening to the Sabres Hockey Network. At the UPS store, we get it. Have to come outside the zone as Josh Don working with Mloud and Zucker tonight. Done head on. Keep it in the Pittsburgh zone on his own. We’ll just move on from that. Harrison Brunick gets Pittsburgh on their way deep in the Saber zone left by Sea Karov out there with Byron being his partner tonight. Play at center. Sabres trying to fish it free and find some room. In this era of the NHL, it’s all on the wall. How do you get it to someone in front of the net finding the soft spot? And right now the Sabres, aside from the power play, have not been able to do that here against the Penguins. However, Raquel going to the net for a tip in, but it’s blocked in front. And it’s to the line and out. Bit of trouble there trying to keep it in by Weatherspoon. Penguins defenseman out there along with Carlson who has it now. Carlson’s pass onto the wing right side. Tipped deep into the Buffalo zone. Brazil after it. stays with it. Brazil against a couple of sabers. Throws it over onto the far wall. Malin to the point. Latang shot. That one is tipped right on. Stopped by Lion. Alex Tuck can’t clear. He’ll get another chance. Unable to do so the second time. Malcolin drops it back. Here’s Latang. Sits it up top. Shot doesn’t get through from Jones. Puck still bouncing around the goal line. Gloved down by Malcolin. Skates behind the net to the far corner. He’ll play it back to the blue line. just kept in the tang of the near circle takes a shot that’s blocked. The Sabres trying to skate it out this time under some duress. Alex Tuck gets the red line and they get it down towards Jarry. Buffalo able to change some of their players. Yeah, first pass coming out of the zone here is being a little bit of a problem in this first period for the Savers. Pittsburgh doing a good job coming down, pinching down the wall. You got to realize that the second guy is there. So, this puck has got to get lofted into the neutral zone a little more. get out away from the wall where guys can come through with a little bit of momentum or get it across ice going and try to spread them out a little bit. They’re just trying to play a little bit too tight here. Small area games and you want to get it spread out a little bit cuz Pittsburgh is doing a nice job picking off pucks and their transition has been pretty quick here. Face off just outside the Savers line. Danforth at the dot. Sabers with possession from their own blue line. Work it in for an offensive set. Trying to play it again off the wall. This time left corner up top for Ryan Johnson. Slides into a shooting position that’s deflected in behind the net. Kak plays it back to the point far side. Timmons with a shot and that’s going to be stopped by Jarry. Good traffic in front of the net. Sabres, you got three of them there and three Penguins as well. Yeah, just got to get basket basic hockey and that’s exactly what this line just did. They kept the puck down low. They worked it. They got it at the point. They got traffic of the net. You know, this line is going to be out there with Kak, Danforth, and Nenstein. You know, you’re not looking for the pretty goal. You’re looking to get that ugly one. You’re trying to change momentum here a little bit. And right there, that was a good shift for them because they spent probably at least a good 30, 40 seconds in the zone. Created a good opportunity. Got the puck to the point. Did all the things they wanted to. So now this line of Zucker Mloud here got to follow this one up. Joan positioned in behind the faceoff. taken by Mloud. Back to Don for a shot. Well, that was played perfectly. Yeah, that’s good. That’s exactly what you want to see here. You just want to keep getting pucks. Have positive things going on here. Just try to get yourselves into that good mind space here. That was Mloud and Zucker. Back to Dome. One, two, three against Achari. This time straight to Dome. He swept it across to the near circle out of the reach of Byum just enough that he couldn’t pull the trigger on a shot. Yeah, right there. I think you still take that shot. Well, now you got a guy coming out. Yeah, you still take the shot right there because you’re risking making that pass across to the D. And if there’s miss like this is what happens. You may lose control of the puck goes back out into the neutral zone. Don’t turn down a scoring opportunity, especially right off the face like that when everybody’s kind of kind of rushing to get into position. Everybody’s standing still. Bang. If you can get that quick shot off. Sabres from their own end up left wing side. Zucker tips it in. I like what you say as well just from the idea of almost muscle memory. You win the draw back to the shooter, let it go where it just becomes and as you said earlier and everybody knows what you’re going to do with a puck before you get it. They know where to go. Absolutely. This is their big thing in the last couple years. They want to be predictable. Everybody, they want everybody to be on the same page what’s going to happen. And if you know every time off the draw that if it’s one like that, bang, it’s going to the net. It’s not the passing. Then you feed off that. You go right to the net. You give them an out. Here’s Raquel with a shot that’s stewed away by Lion. Second chance also stewed away by Lion. Another shot. Lions busy here against the Penguins as Caleb Jones had a couple of looks right there with the Crosby line and Crosby and Raquel. They’ll go to the bench now with 440 to go in a one- nothing Penguins lead. First period of play here in Pittsburgh. Veronica out from behind his own net up the middle of the ice. backhands it into the Buffalo zone. Malcuit left boards, tips it down to the corner. It’s all white jerseys with the blue and gold shoulders and trim as the Sabres ice the puck with 418 to go. Yeah, a little bit of difference here too. The Pittsburgh Penguins, they’re they’re willing to get the puck in deep. They’re they’re hitting a line if there’s nothing there. Savers doing a nice job standing them up. They’re chipping. They’re soft chipping the puck into the corner. They get guys going with momentum and they’re coming back up with it. You know, you normally want the Pittsburgh Penguins, you’re seeing them puck control, gain the line, get things set up, try to catch that third guy coming in. You know, they realize it’s not there. So, it’s the same thing at the other end. The Savers got to be willing just to get this puck past and get numbers on the puck. Penguins working to the front of the net in line. Found that one through traffic, able to steer it away. Penguins looking for Clifton in the center lane. It was there. Stolen away by Buffalo. And the puck bounces away from Payton Krebs. He and Yuri Koulik on the counter just couldn’t connect. Reik back the other way in the Buffalo zone. Bouncing puck. Can’t keep it in. It’s going to come back to line. He’s got to hold this one. Got a Penguin standing right on the doorstep. Time out on the ice. 351 to go in the first period. Buffalo out shooting. Pittsburgh 11 to five, but trailing the Penguins one- nothing. Face off for the Buffalo zone. Sabres down one- nothing. 351 to go in the first period. This job makes you weak. [Music] Well, I used to There are other people now I’m weak. There are other people that work for living razor. [Music] Savers bring three across the line. Zucker down on the corner. Walks it to the front of the net. Got the back hand away, but Jarry able to make the stop. Buffalo putting good pressure down low here on the Penguins in their zone. Pittsburgh though able to wrestle it free and flip it out to center ice. Straddling the line and unable to keep things right was Thomas. Sabres get it back again. It’ll be Byum on the left side. Fires it around. Nola waiting for it. He’s closed in on by one two Sabres, but Penguins still able to get it outside the zone and Buffalo was changing from the Penguins line. It’s chipped deep down in behind the Penguins goal. Kak goes for a ride down to the ice. Danforth can’t keep it in and it’s lifted to center. Kak left side pass. Sweeps it to the corner. Malenstein charging after it. He gets there and plays it ahead of Weatherspoon. Kak on the boards trying to take it back and away from Pittsburgh on the counter as a lander on that line for the Penguins. A fourth line tonight with Achari and Connor Der played down deep in the Buffalo zone on the right wing wall. Latang far circle as there’s a shot stopped by Lion at the far post. Tried to sweep the rebound away but it stayed with him but right in front of him and he covers up. Yeah, they tried to go short side up top and Alex Lion does a really nice job of getting his body tight to that post. Puck lays in front. He didn’t get any help from his DA. I don’t think they realized where it was. He could see it but he just couldn’t take it get to it. It took him a second to get himself situated where he’s able to get his glove on it and guys were tying each other up in front. So, that was a good thing. There was no sticks in that blue paint. So, he’s able to find the puck, cover it. And you see in Pittsburgh here, they’re they’re willing to throw the pucks from all different angles. And whether it’s at the goal line, below the goal line, they’re looking to shoot. Top line against top line here with 210 to go in the opening period. Raquel has the puck. Crosby at the line. Toyan lost it. Tage Thompson gets it back. Spins a pass to the boards left side. Savers to the Penguins line. It’s all bunched up and Latang gets it back again. He’ll snap it across. Caleb Jones starts the Penguins on their way into the Buffalo zone. Connor Timmons from the corner able to play it up the wall. Buffalo now with Norris will carry it to center. Actually lost the handle on it just before the red line. And it’s an icy call against the Sabres. So line will keep the top line on the ice for And you know what? You just saw Norris there. He coming up through trying to make a play, loses control, goes down. Okay, that’s Kate Johnson probably two to three times in this first period trying to make something happen, loses the puck. Their timing just isn’t there yet. And that’s something that you don’t have to worry about. It’s going to happen. And sometimes it’s just the focus on the game. I know it’s the last exhibition game, but you got to play it the way you got to play it. and you just want to get sloppy in that. 90 seconds to go in the opening period as Harrison Brunick is back in behind his own net and will start the carry out up the middle for Pittsburgh. Pass to center ice. Anthony Mantha laying it down below the goal line. Picked up by Mulan. Carried back to the point. Connor Clifton down the far wall off a skate and the Sabres get it back again. Here’s a chance for fouron two counter rush for Buffalo to the Penguins line in. Krebs continues to the net, but Jarry gets a favorable bounce at that far post and holds on to the loose puck. Yeah, Cubs moves this puck wide. He’s going, they’re going down on a four on two. You got the D back off. They’re going to back off because there’s four guys coming and he tries to make a play at the line. They’re not able to handle it clean on the line. And what it does is buys that extra second for everybody to get back for Pittsburgh and kind of break that up. In that case, keep driving. Keep driving that puck straight through. And once you get there, somebody’s going to come in behind. Not all four guys are going to drive through the net. You drive them back as far as you can. Get over that line and then make the play. Face off to the left of Jarry. He’s at the edge of the blue paint. One minute remaining. Kiki does not win the draw against Nola, but the Sabres now have possession. Alex Tuck in the slot trying to stick handle’s way with three Penguins hunting for that puck. They find it. Then it’s off a player and into the Pittsburgh bench over near center ice. Think they’re going to drop the puck at center. Yeah, I think the Sabers here just in the first period. I And I’m going to credit this if Pittsburgh wouldn’t have a goal. It was kind of an unfortunate goal. It should be a 000 game at this point, but nevertheless, hey, you travel in, you got to get your legs going. I expect a totally different team here in the second period. Little timing, you know, stepping in. You get off the plane. two hours later, you’re on the ice playing the game. It’s tough and I get it, but I think it’s just you’re going to see a little different team here as this game goes on because this a little too scrambly for these regular guys in the lineup right now. Sabres with 32 seconds left in the period. We’ll bring it in across the line. Mloud will drop it back along the wall. You got Don in front. Chasing Zooker out there as well. Pittsburgh in possession of the puck in the corner. Now Carlson will skate away with it. He’s got 15 seconds as he gets to the red line and into the Buffalo zone down the left side. Kicks it onto his stick in the corner. Pass by Ben Kindle goes to the wall. Penguins wanted it to the front of the net, but the Sabres intercept and that will kill this first period. One- nothing the score on the goal by Thomas Cino. As Razer mentioned, just one of those things that happens in hockey, a little crashing the net, but it resulted in a goal. That’s why you do it. Kendall picks up the assist and that’s the long goal of the hockey game after 20. Let’s send it to Brian Kosil for our first intermission report. Thank you Dan. Thank you Rob from Pittsburgh where the Sabres are trailing it by a one to nothing score. Kind of a weird goal as Philip Thomas crashes into Alex line after being uh I guess you’d say some contact with Bo Byum and the puck actually slides in and goes under line. Good news nevertheless whether you think the goal should have counted or not is that Alex line is okay and if he fish finished the remainder of the period. Okay let’s go now and get our first period intermission interview as Karov is standing by with Paul Hamilton. You’re getting an opportunity to be with the big club this week. That had to be nice because you thought you were going to start training camp in Rochester and then they brought you up here. What’s been like to be able to come up here and practice uh with the big team? Oh, that’s like little like different, you know, all the skills and uh everything pays. Yeah. But like I’m happy to be here, you know, practice with those guys and to play today. I was going to say, you must be happy uh to go up against a Pittsburgh Penguins team. You’re going to see Sydney Crosby, Malcolin, you’re going to see a lot of guys that you probably grew up liking. Yeah, I’m really like excited to play versus those guys, you know, so like so happy to play versus them. Yeah, that’s it. Tell me about Rochester last year. It was your first time playing in North America. What was it like? What was your experience like? And where did you improve as the season went on? Um, yeah, it’s difference between like pro hockey and junior. So like everything is like much faster, more skills and much like physical guys. But yeah, I think this is the biggest and uh what I improved. I don’t really like can see like can uh what to say that like in myself? I don’t know. I’m just like trying to work on everything, you know, to be better like at everywhere. And finally, you know, one of the things that I know you worked on when you were in junior hockey is your English. Your English is very good. And it’s something that you thought it was important, didn’t you, that if you’re going to play over here that you you wanted to learn the language? Yeah, of course. I think you have to like understand everything the guy saying, the coaches for Yeah, but I I feel like I still like have to improve a little more on my English. Sometimes I like forgetting some words, but yeah, that’s it. Not bad. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks, Sealov. Thank you. Searov, Brian, back to you. All right, seal komarov there with Paul Hamilton and Paul will join us here in just one moment as the Penguins lead the Sabres one to nothing on Philip Thomasino’s goal at 843. Okay, back to Paul before we talk about the first period in Pittsburgh. You just spoke with Karof and uh I guess where do you kind of see him right now in the organization and just maybe uh maybe what has impressed you the most with him so far? Well, I thought he had a pretty good first year, his first year in in well, not North America because he did play junior, but his first year in pro North American hockey. And um, you know, I thought he needed to improve his skating. I think he did that while he was down there. I think uh he’s a good hitter. He’s there to defend teammates. He was one of the he was voted the best defenseman in the Quebec League his last year. And not only was he voted the best defenseman, he was second in the league in penalty minutes. So, you know, he doesn’t mind getting involved in the rough stuff and winning battles that way. So, uh yeah, I I I think, you know, he is is getting to a point where he’s ready to provide some depth. Is he ready to be a full-time NHL player? No. But we’re getting an opportunity to see him tonight to see is he ready to fill in if you need him? You know, I think this is a big game for him tonight to maybe show the coaching staff that you can count on me and and uh if you need me, I’ll be here. Good transition. Will he be in the mix, Paul? Be because we have injured defenseman. We know Michael Castler hurt now. Bo Byum’s back tonight. Uh where is what’s the latest, I guess, with where you see healthy bodies going into next Thursday on the blue line for Buffalo? Well, according to Lindy Ruff, I asked him after last game if he’s concerned because he’s got four of his six defenseman are injured and he said no because Byron will be back and he is. He’s back in the lineup for this game. He thinks Power is very close, although Power did not practice today, but he still has six days to get back. Um, it sounds and Samuelson practiced today with the uh injured players and was out there and moving around very well. So, it sounds like maybe Kessle Ring might be the only one they’re missing, you know, when it gets down to it if if nobody else gets injured in practice or anything like that. But, you know, how Lindy Ruff likes Johnson. He’s really complimented Johnson, what he’s seen from him. And it seems like Johnson has definitely gone ahead of Zack Jones who’s in Rochester. And I think he’s probably gone ahead of Bryson. So if there if they need to put somebody into the lineup with the top six, I think it it possibly could be Johnson. Let’s finish Paul with the goal. Thomas Cino Paul uh runs into Lion after Byum makes contact with him. Um and I’ll be honest, as soon as I saw the collision, all I was looking at was is Lion going to get up? Is he okay? Because of obviously the uh the discussion we’re having here about injuries. Uh but I should have watched the puck, too, because it went in. So, kind of a weird goal here for the Penguins. I I’m guessing if it was maybe regular season, Lindy Ruff would have challenged. How did you What do you think? No, I don’t think so. Um I did see the puck go in. I I I knew everybody went into that. The puck Thomasino Lion um Byron’s right skate got him. The he his right skate hit Thomasino’s skate and that’s what made him fall. So, um there was there I don’t think he would have challenged it because of that. He didn’t fall on his own. If you look at it again, and it took me a couple of views of the replay to see that, but his right skate did hit him and it did catch his skate and he didn’t sloo him, but it did it did knock him down. So, uh, I think it was correct call to to rule it a good goal. Okay, Thomasino has Pittsburgh in front one nothing. Thank you, Paul. No problem. All right, we’ll talk to Paul after two stats coming up, highlights coming up, and scores from around the night in sports all coming up here. We’ll step aside, take our first time out on the intermission report. Penguins lead it one to nothing in the preseason finale. This is Buffalo Savers Radio. One- nothing after the first to the home side on a goal that went unnoticed by many except the referees on the ice. That is their job to know what’s going on. Yeah, they did and they passed. They made the right call. Good call after we had a chance to see it on the replay. So, you know, give them credit for that. They’re right on top of the game. Great explanation as well. They laid it right out so there was no questions walking out of it. And thing is Sabres shopping 13-7. Only giving up seven shots here in that first period to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Once again, not bad. And 62% in the faceoff circle. So [Music] away we go. Sabres from left to right. It is Comarov and Byron, the defense pair. Top line out for Buffalo. And yes, basically that means Tes Thompson is on the ice. Norris and Quinn. Here’s Byron inside his own zone up ahead. Quinn plays it to the wing. Tates Thompson in the slot. Not a lot of room. Penguins get the puck but can’t clear. Keep in by Norris. Thompson one-time. Stick goes one way, the puck the other. Broke right in half. Taage gets another stick from the bench off to his immediate left, but the Penguins have the puck down deep into the Buffalo zone. There’s Byron behind the net playing that one away from the forche of the Penguins. Billy Quinnan and now the Sabres come back. Comarov drops for Quinn. His pass for Norris on the left side back to Quinn in the corner. Thompson has gone to the bench. So Quinn has to hold this for a moment or two. Penguins just bump him off the puck and Mulan then turns it over. Yuri Koulik took a high stick in that first period. Didn’t stay out of action that long on the ice now with Alex Tuck deep in the Pittsburgh zone behind the net working against Caleb Jones as the puck comes back to the near side. Kept in by Connor Timonss plays it to the wall right wing now back to the point for a shot that is tipped by Alex Tuck wide. Well, that’s where Alex wanted the shot as he now drifts back towards the front of the net. Pton Krebs working off the right wall halfway down to the Pittsburgh zone. Close support by Koulique who snaps a pass across. Comes back to Krebs in the high slot. Fires that one just wide. Yeah, this is Ryan Johnson at the blue line. A lot of movement from Johnson when he gets the puck. He’s not stationary. Penguins are going to ice it. Yeah, I think a smart move by Danny Melin there just getting rid of this puck and just kind of settle things down a little bit here as teams kind of running around a little bit in their own zone. But to give Savers credit, they moved the puck really well. The D on the blue line managed the puck well, kept it in a couple times, kept it alive, but threw pucks to the net to the to the net and guys were there and the Sabres able to get a couple lines out there and able to follow it up both times in a row. Mets number 73 on the ice along with Jacob Bryson defensively now as Mloud just outside the Pittsburgh blue line. Gathers it back to the Buffalo line. This is Mets back to Mloud. Gains the Pittsburgh line up the middle. Carries it to the left wing wall. Fires it around all the way back to the near point. Mets trying to keep it in for Dome. Dome leaning his way around the coverage of Caleb Jones. Buffalo top of the far circle looking for some room. Dome back to the line. Here’s Mets. He’s got some room. Hops the pass down to the corner to his right. Sabres back up top for Mloud. Right side. Tried to slide that through. Mets on the far wall. Back to Mloud. Stick handles up. Turns it back down in behind the Pittsburgh goal. Sabres win possession down below the goal line. And a nice piece of work. Zucker plays it back to the line. Mets with a shot that’s met by the Penguins defender in front of the net. Sabres with a keep in for a moment. Now he’s cleared outside the line. Yeah, the Penguins got three guys on the ice that have been over almost two and a half minutes each and the Sabres just relentless in the on the for check here keeping it alive, not allowing it to come out to to allow the Pittsburgh Penguins to to regroup or getting any changes. So Latang and Jones 2 minutes 40 seconds and there’s finally just one of them getting to the bench now too. Sabres with the line of Kak Danforth and Malenstein on the ice. There’s Danforth being leaned on by Connor Clifton in the Pittsburgh zone. Still fighting for it on the near wall. Danforth comes away with it. Walks to the circle, tries to make a pass and slides to Melenstein. And Danforth had a chance at it as well. Right in front of Jarry. Big hit down below the goal line there. Malenstein steps into his van. And the Sabres changing after that hit. Balenstein to the bench. Turned over to Norris. He’s on the attack down the left side. Thompson in front. Scores. Hey, Beck Malenstein laid out Connor Clifton in the corner, created the turnover. They come out over the line, come back in, and Tate Thompson’s going to be the guy that gets his goal. But Beck Melenstein, what a job. He just hammers Connor Clifton. They create the turnover at the blue line. Norris picks it off and he keeps it alive. He gains the zone and he’s going to find Tae Thompson driving right through the middle of the ice and he just gets it in his feet all in one motion out of his feet to his stick and bang gets it in the back of the net. But I still go back to Beck Melenstein finishing that check down low. Got them all back. Got them all caught and Thompson’s able to connect with Norris. Well, you know, in the postgame conversation, Lindy will bring that exact same thing up first. Hey, we finished our check down low and and that’s what it came from. up and that’s what they weren’t doing in the first period. Doing it much better here. Four minutes so far gone in this second period and probably 340 of it’s been in the Pittsburgh zone. Thompson’s fourth of the preseason. We’re tied at one. 351 time of the goal. Sabres in the Penguin zone again. Traffic jam of the blue line on the right wing wall. Penguins able to clear it to center ice now. Ryan Johnson back in his own blue line. puts it up ahead to Quinn. He’ll tip it down to the corner. Tage Thompson racing after. He finishes his check on Weather Spoon. We’ve talked many times about how plays like that could be contagious. And even Thompson finishing his check wasn’t a big hit, but he bumps Weather Spoon. And now the Sabres get it back. Thompson deep in his own zone, starting it back the other way. That play just stays on side and Latang winds up with it in the corner from his own hand. Latang across and Caleb Jones will fire it into the Buffalo zone. Didn’t get it quite deep enough. Went off a body. Sabres now with Alex Tuck right side center at the red line. Sweeps that one across. It’s off his skate and the Penguins come back into the Buffalo zone. Pittsburgh making some changes here as Latang at the line slides it across over the far circle is Crosby for Latang and a one-time well wide. Crosby in the corner, works it back up top and Connor Clifton can’t keep it in the zone. Now Raquel backhand pass down the wall. Nobody there for Pittsburgh. They’re headed off for a change. Sydney Cosby out there for his first shift of the second period. The first period only played 4 minutes 13 seconds. Six shifts. There’s Connor Clifton down in the corner in the Pittsburgh zone. He’s able to touch it ahead. Penguins in turn it over. Take it away and Mloud will send it around behind the goal into the near corner and Dome takes a hit from Clifton. Pokes at it. Comes back in front for Mloud. His shot to the corner. Byum trying to play it back down in behind the net for Jason Zucker. That hit a body. And now the Penguins come back the other way. Byum, nice job getting in the way of Justin Brazo without an interference call there as he met him the same time the puck arrived. And then Buffalo goes offside as a little tie up against Zucker against the wall. 1-1. Tage Thompson with a goal to tie it for the Sabres here in the second. You’re listening to the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network. Both teams wrapping up their preseason schedule here in Pittsburgh tonight. Sabres and the Penguins are tied to one. 1350 to go in the second period. Last season, the Penguins went two and0 against the Sabres. Sydney Crosby and a couple goals, two helpers. Malin a four-point campaign against Buffalo with a goal and three assists. And Brian Rust, who’s out for a little bit here for Pittsburgh, they got some bad news on the injury front. He was injured at practice. and he’s going to be out for a little while. It’s going to provide an opportunity for somebody on the top line. Hence the auditioning of the likes of Billy Quinn who’s up there tonight with Sydney Crosby as a puck is flipped into the Pittsburgh zone and we get a whistle. But the Sabres are doing the same. They’ve got Quinn up top with Norris and Thompson. It was Krebs in the previous game. So, well, when when when you get put somebody put in that position like you’re playing with a Crosby and Ral or or even Thompson and Norris, that player’s job is pretty simple. It’s do the work. Get down low, get the puck, create things, move the puck, get it to these guys, find them. So, you know, you go out there, it’s not as if you’re trying to wonder where they’re going. You just go and then they read off you. Well, and they’re in might be uh as the Penguins ice the puck. Let’s be Jack Quinn is a guy who’s has to shoot the puck to be the player he can be. So it’s a little bit of a different role for him then as you mentioned. It’s I think it’s a huge difference for for a guy like Quinn and I think that’s why like say even a Benson will do well on that because he’s that guy going to the front of the net. He’s causing the turnovers. He’s in the corners. He works the front of the net really well. And what that does that’s going to open up opportunities for those guys and he and he moves the puck really well. So, you know, when you you’re sometimes if you got a shooter in that position, when you got all three guys that are shooters, you know, you’re kind of looking at each other, okay, who’s going to be the one that goes be the wor. Yeah. Penguins win the draw. Carried down deep into the corner by Carlson. Tried to center. Saber’s able to get on the end of that. Cleared outside the zone. 1316 to go. Second period. Shots 14-9 in favor of Buffalo in this 1-1 game. Sabers from the corner lifting it up. Quinn tried to one time that one off the wall. That did not pan out. Looking for Norris who comes back into his own end. Timmons looking for Quinn. That did not connect at all. And it’s an icing call against Buffalo. You look at last season for Quinn, of course, with his 15 goals, 39 points. a 37 point rookie year admitted last year that he’s got a lot more to give and as the season goes on we’ll I think in preseason here you’re playing in a lot of different situations you’re doing a lot of different things with different lines so I think once you get a line set with Jack Quinn he’s going to get comfortable and he’s the kind of guy he gets one or two and then you know that’s what he’s going to need to get himself going a little bit is the whole confidence thing with him I think he’s done the work he’s done all the things he has to to be ready for this season and I think it’s just a matter of where he’s going to play, who he’s going to play with and just some time to get comfortable. Penguins get it deep in the Buffalo zone. Melanin trying to set it up for Latang in the slot. That went off his skate. Couldn’t quite get it to his stick and back the other way. Quinn at the end of a lengthy shift of his own go to the bench for a minute 20 by the time he got off the ice. Of course, the icing played a role in that. Savers now in the Pittsburgh zone. Score. Yuri Kik in front. with a shot coming off the stick and Alex Tuck I think threw that to the net or was it Pton Krebs’s going to get get the uh the goal here but he started the whole thing. This puck comes out of the zone. He’s the first man in on the puck. He’s pressuring down low and he creates a turnover. He gets a piece of the goalender, throws it into the front of the net, and then stays alive. Then eventually he’s going to be the one standing in front. But if he didn’t put the pressure on the goalender, the goalender was going to be able to move this puck and make a play coming out of the zone. Got right on top of him, used his speed. Goender got a little tied up back there. He was able to poke the puck away, gain control. So give him credit not only for scoring the goal, but he was the one that created the whole play going into the zone. Alex Tuck with the shot from the far circle and then this the touch as you mentioned by Koulique at the net. That Noah shot. You see where Alex’s eyes on that replay? way over to the side. He was looking the opposite direction and I threw it towards the net. He was looking at us up here. Watch this. So, Alex Tuck, who has right now been credited with the goal on the official score sheet. Now, we’ll change that. 2-1 Buffalo. Sabres back into the offensive zone. Tuck and Payton Krebs working below the goal line. Up top, shot from the point. Mets are trying to keep it in the wall right side. It’ll be lifted outside the zone to center and the Penguins are on it. So with the Sabres there as Kak not leaving any room whatsoever for Connor Der to do anything with a puck. Buffalo going to ice the puck here though. Change of mind there by the linesman and to continue on as the Penguins just inside their own blue line making some changes. Chipped into the Buffalo zone. Bryson Omarov that pass wasn’t going to get to him. Penguins on the turnover with a look and Lion able to get a piece of that one. Then he was bumped a little bit by Raquel as Crosby sends it across looking for Billy Kovven. Penguins at the point near circle. Crosby slides it to the near post. Lions swats at it. Now Karov comes up with it for Buffalo. Skates it out to the blue line and it will lift it softly into the Pittsburgh zone. looking for Raquel in what would have been a breakaway pass had they connected. Byum would have given him a race. Quinnan sends it back down for Crosby in the corner. Raquel turns with Quan in to go to the bench. They got a stick line on the ice over there and a slashing call perhaps coming up. Comarov waving that left hand of his. Yeah, he got slashed pretty good. I think Sydney Crosby is the guy that’s going to be the the guilty party here as he came back in. The two of them came to the front of the net. Penalty number 87. Two minutes. Coming a little shot, a cross check in the corner. A little push from behind. Crosby just turned around and gave him a slash right on top of the glove. And Comarov dropped his stick handling a little bit on that left probably wrist or so. Yeah, right on it. Sydney Crosby had a little a little break in the box there. Didn’t seem like he was really interested in playing this one anyways. Only playing four minutes in that first period. So, Sabres going back to the power play over two. [Music] Key component to their plans of improving on last season for sure. They’ve had a number of chances with the number one unit as Norris works off the right circle. Top of the circle now. Goal line. Bump back and forth. Zooker and Alex Tuck. Now Norris. Zooker looks to the far post. Little no look shot that time. Stopped by Jarry. Norris up top with Byum. Byum gets the shot off the end wall. Chance. Scores. Jason Zucker at the near post with a beautiful feed, but he takes off the end wall and buries it. And the Sabres are up three to one on the second. Yeah, missed shot here for the Sabres from the point and Z Jason Zucker right on the right corner here. He’s going to get this right off the wall. It comes off hot. It was a big shot and the shot was taken. Bowen Byum takes the quick shot and then it comes off the back wall hot perfectly right to Jason Zucker. Pulls it from his backand to his forehand. Jarry not able to get across in time and he puts it right up underneath the bar for the third goal here for the Sabres. 17 shots, three goals here. And what an addition he was last year to the power play and showing early going, not lost anything. Yeah, he was the brightest spot sometimes on that power play. And it’s just the willingness and the work he can do in tight. He doesn’t need a lot of room. You know, he gets that puck, he’s very good in around his feet. He can pull it up to his forehand to backhand really quick. Gets the shot off. And that’s exactly what he was doing there. He’s pretty much right on the goal line. pulls it off the back wall and up and underneath. We got Alex Lion. I don’t see the backup goalender making any moves right now is no official timeout on the ice. Maybe the Penguins called a timeout. They never announced it, but I think maybe that’s what Pittsburgh is doing right now. Their coach is doing a Yeah, they’re in the huddle right now. Yeah, they they just they just said timeout here. So, they’re calling the timeout just as the timeout was ending. And I think they may be making a goalender change here possibly for the Pittsburgh Penguins as well. No, Jerry’s going to go back for a little bit longer. [Music] There Shawn has got all his equipment on. Yeah, he’s up and ready. Ready to go. Yeah. So, [Music] maybe that was one of those the coach asked him, “Are you done?” And he says, “No.” No. [Music] So, the Sabres get the goal from Zooker. We’re halfway through this game, too, Dan. Sabres have surrendered nine shots on that once again. So, back to how it kind of started off. As much trouble they had in the first period. They’re doing a very good job here, not giving anything up. Shot for the point. Deflection attempt by Josh Don. Saved by Jarry. We might get the goalending change when we come back for the Penguins. It’s 3-1 Buffalo here in the second, just past the halfway mark of the hockey game. You’re listening to the Sabres Hockey Network. Latang against Mloud and Mloud didn’t really want to give Latang any more of a race there. And a faceoff coming back down to the Buffalo end. Yeah, a totally different team there in the second period. We talking about got their feet going. They got their feet going. They’re more engaged here, being a little more aggressive. They’re getting pucks to the net. They’re coming up with pucks along the balls from those 50/50 battles. All the things they weren’t doing or not able to do in that first period, they just all the travel coming in. They got themselves a period under their belt and then they could settle down. They got themselves going here physically and mentally. And this second period, it’s been all savors. They haven’t given up a shot yet in this period. Penguins finished the first with nine and they’re stuck on that number. Seven. I got nine on this one. All right. Depending on your source, they haven’t give up much. No, they haven’t. Yeah. Point made. Pittsburgh just inside the Savers line. Good pressure at the line this time by Buffalo as Kzak kept his stick in there. And then Don gets a piece of the puck and ships it outside. We’ll race to the Buffalo bench to get one part of the change in. Malenstein and Kak out there as the play is along the wall. Mets for Bryson. Chipped up and into the Pittsburgh zone. Wther spoon back after it. Watched by Melenstein. Melenstein just rocked the boards there looking to finish the check. Crosby with a pass to the middle of the ice. Picked off by Yuri Kulie. Bouncing puck to the Pittsburgh line. Carlson with it. Back hands up the wall. Taken by Koan. Played across. Raquel will shoot it in behind the net. Lion leaving it there. Sabres looking to skate it out now with some room as Kik has Tuck off to his right. Tuck tried to go back to Koulik. It slides right on to Mirishov who covers up. the first little touch of the puck remov. The other thing that we’re noticing tonight, Rob, when the offense, the savers are going once they get the puck in their own zone, they’re going straight. There’s been a couple cross ice looks, but right there, those two tuck and colleague straight ahead. Well, I think their whole plan is is trying to come up the same wall all the time, so they’re predictable. You know, they’re not looking to make that cross ice until they get it out of the zone. Then they’ll start, you know, spreading it out a little bit. But coming out of the zone, they’re looking to come up the same side all the time here. And that’s just to keep themselves predictable the way they talk about so everybody’s on the same page. There’s no question when you’re going back into the zone. You know it’s coming up the certain side and you can adjust to it. [Music] Face off just outside the Penguins line. Yuri Kik will step in to take this draw. Kenny Malcin for the Penguins. Malcolin, Latang, and Crosby all celebrating a year, the 20th season that all three will have played together with this franchise. Pretty remarkable for three cornerstones of some pretty good success for this group over the years. Different point in time now though as they get to the front of the net from Mantha. His backhand goes just wide. Mantha behind the goal. Got a piece of it to the near corner. Leaving it down low is Brazo. Here’s Mulan with a shot. That’s off the end wall. Bumped off the puck. It’ll be brought back up ice by the Sabres to center. Krebs pass. Does find a target. Far circle. Krebs with a shot. Stop. Rebound. Alex Tuck trying to test Mirror shot, but it goes into the corner. Comes back outside the zone. Good work by Payton Krebs on that rush. Here’s Lion in behind the net. He keeps the puck moving up the wall right side. Conor Timonss look out through center gets around the forche of Hollander and now it’s Tae Thompson getting his shift. Lost the puck a little bit down low and the Sabres though able to win it back. Here’s Norris. Back to Thompson in the slot. Holds it. Fires and a glove save made by Mirishock. Yeah, a little pump fake there by Tate Thompson as this puck pops free. Jack Quinn doing a nice job here on this shift with the puck distributing. Got it to Norris once and Norris kind of stepped into the middle, finds Tage Thompson and then Tes kind of a double pump just waiting for things to open up and takes the quick shot. Watching Alex Lion here between whistles going for figure eight skates. He’s got to keep himself going here. Only nine shots so far. 621 left in the second period. Has not got a ton of work. So you got to keep yourself moving. You got to keep yourself into it. I think that’s why you see with every time the puck’s coming down, he’s getting out of the net and he’s trying to come out and play the puck just to keep himself going. Johnson line still out there drawing the Pittsburgh zone. It comes back into the Buffalo. Penguins will play it to the top of the far circle. Oh, that one goes up over the shoulder of Lion as Brunick came down the right side and got towards the goal line. just lifted it up and over and it’s a one-goal game. 3-2 Buffalo with 607 to go in this second period. I’m amazed the defenseman did that. That was a really nice play coming down the side. There was nothing. Everybody was tied up out front and he was able to put that short side right up over the left shoulder line and right underneath the bar. And that’s the kind of play you see guys like Thompson and that make. You don’t normally see a defenseman even attempt something like that. I think he was almost going looking maybe for how they bank it off the the helmet of the goalender into the net, but it was a perfectly placed shortside shot and get the young man credit. He even nailed that one. Well, you mentioned it before. Kids are coming into the game a lot more fearless now and they will try things where back in the day as you can talk to and even before your day sometimes you try that. Well, you wouldn’t dare try that stuff. No, you wouldn’t dare it because you would hear from the coaches, you stay back at the point. You might even hear from your linemates going, “Hey, I was open there and you’re taking a hoop shot from the side like that and we lose control of the puck. It takes away from an opportunity, but you know, now it just anything goes.” And I think it’s great because it’s you’re seeing more skill. You’re seeing different things tried. It’s not the same old because you just never know. Every night you’re seeing something different. Thomas for the Penguins. Thought he had that one won, but it’s behind the net for Buffalo to get a chance to play this one to the line and out. Don tips it ahead. Turning it with it. Thomas Cino with the red line. He’ll fire it in. 550 remaining. Second period. 3-2 Buffalo here in Pittsburgh. Final preseason game for the Sabres this year. Mloud for Bryson who comes out from under the goal line. Left side of the ice towards center. Sabres to the red line. Shoot it into the Pittsburgh zone. Penguins are on at first, but here comes the pressure. Scored by number 45. Sabres had a chance here to keep it in, but then they lose the handle on it. It will be Thomas Cena who throws it around into the Buffalo end. Picked up though by Bryson. His pass finding Josh Don Don at center ice trying to chop that one ahead. Penguins get it back at their own line. Pittsburgh will put it in behind Lion in behind the net. Lion out to play along with Karov. Penguins Raquel out with Crosby and Quinnan who comes out from behind the net in the near corner. Left wing side for Pittsburgh at the goal line trying to protect the puck. Raquel backing his way towards the front of the net, but that didn’t work out. Sabres good pressure at the line. Get it back again. Ozak to the Pittsburgh line. Knocked down by the Penguins. Raquel coming back. No high stick of the play. So we continue on. Buffalo keeping in the zone. Danforth throwing it around behind the net. Comes back to the point which was somewhat vacated and the Sabres Connor Timmons inside his own line up ahead. Danfor trying to slide a short pass through coming to help out and meet it. Yuri Koulik plays it around to the far boards. Danforth far point left side playing it in behind the net turning with it. Pton Krebs backhand in the far corner. still on his backand plays it back to the line for a shot and that one with traffic in front. Steered away. Penguins defending as the Sabres look to play it back to the point again, but that’s nowhere near Ryan Johnson. And Pittsburgh will change as Malcolm comes over the boards with 353 to go in the second period. Sabres making their way to the line. Here’s a pass across and Alex Tuck by the time he got that one. Offside. Offside is the call. 3-2 the score. Sabres with the lead here in the later stages of the second period. You’re listening to the Sabres hockey network. Jamie Feele of Feele Car and Joyce. Dan Dunley, Rob Ray, Mantha with a deflection into the Buffalo zone. going to roll to the left on the Sabres net tended by Alex Lion. Here’s Alex Tuck. He’s off to the races if he can handle this pass, but he has to wait for it. Connor Clifton is ahead of him. Takes the shot and then a slot rebound and the Sabres score their fourth of the game as Yuri Koulik stayed with the play. Mir could not handle the initial shot. Koulik again finds a puck hanging around the net. Well, Alex Tuck does a nice job at first. He’s got to catch this puck. He gets it in his feet, gets it up to his stick, but stays on side. But it was a great pass by Yuri Kuik coming up through or sorry, Pton Krebs. Yuri Kuik just drives off to the far side as Peyton Krebs gives Alex Tucking out and a quick shot. You can hear it hit the blocker and he’s not able to control it. Stuck through his arm and Koulique driving through to the net as you always tell the second forward. Got to go through to the net. Open it up. Kreb stayed back to be the third man. would give Alex tucking out and that was just a tap in. It’s great coaching video, isn’t it? Hey guys, I keep telling you to show that to younger kids right there. You got the guy with the shot. Second guy’s got to go and see what happens. It’s not always the glorious thing. You’re not taking the shot, but you’re the one going to have a chance in most cases to bury it if there’s any type of a rebound. Penguins come back here in the Buffalo zone. Drop for Balkan right side. Forced down below the goal line. Sabres taken away then given back. Malcin takes a look out front. Dropped back to the line. Shot is blocked. Malin kicks it back to the point again for a blast. Saved by Lion, but comes back to the side of the net and it’s taken away by Karov and he gets to his forehand. Puts it off the glass and out of the zone. His second game for 20. Koulique with two on the night and two now in his pre-season play. 4-2 with 230 to go in the second. Buffalo with the lead. Penguins will keep it in at the line. Caleb Jones for Crosby in the corner. Crosby trying to dish it out front and Lion read the play and gloves it at the side of the Buffalo net. Lion’s been uh looking pretty good here tonight. The first goal, as we mentioned, can’t blame him on that. He was crashed into in the net. No. Oh, and even the second goal, too. That’s that’s a beautiful beautiful shot uh by the young man coming in off the point and putting it in. But, you know, he’s only faced what shows 11 shots on the board, but I think it’s got to be a little bit more than that by now. But, he has managed it well in that case right there by freezing the puck. You got to realize who’s on the ice. Sometimes you stop the play, gives yourself an opportunity to get guys matched up. And in that case, Crosby was on the ice. Yeah. line with another save with a shot coming from the point. So you don’t want to extend plays when guys like that are on the ice. You want to slow that momentum down as much as possible. I think Dallas L realizing that being veteran goalender, hey, let’s just let’s just get set here. We get the guys on the ice we want against them. Derander and a chari line for the Penguins out there against the Sabres who are trying to free it up on the wall here. Connor Timonss as the puck battle continues on the Sabres right side with a minute 50 remaining in the period. Now it comes free. Penguins had a chance to dish it across but picked off by Buffalo. And now Mloud for Zucker is given a bump. Pittsburgh from the line. Caleb Jones with Latang is his partner over on the other side. Penguins behind the net. Delay. Penalty call coming up here to Buffalo as the Sabres touch it. Yes. So with 132 to go in the period. So this will be the first time the Pittsburgh Penguins have gone on the power play here in this game as Ryan Johnson’s going to the box. Penalty holding and just battle down along the walls. Ryan’s going to reach out, take his hand off the bottom of the stick, reach around the Pittsburgh Penguin, kind of almost grab onto his stick and spin him around. The referee right there in the corner could not get away from that one. So Pittsburgh here with a minute 32 left in this second period. Down 42 going to the power play. Well, you want to practice your kill. Sorry, Rob. You’ve got Crosby, Mal, and Latang, Raquel, and Carlson. Preseason is to work on moments and uh if you’re going to go against a group, this is a good one. Sabres able to tip a pass across at the line and Penguins got to reset here. 114 to go in the period. Second frame. Savers up a pair behind the net. Byron with a chance to clear and he gets it all the way down the ice. Yeah, nice job here by Timmons and Bow and Byron just pushing him to the outside. One man running interference for the other so he can go down and fire down the ice. Bryson and Timonss now on the back end. Sabers’s got a change and Timmons able to clear it down the ice. Tage Thompson out to kill as well. Now Timmons goes to the bench and Mets comes out to get some penalty kill time. Number 73 for Buffalo as Malin gains the line down in the far corner. Kicks it back to the point. Crosby top of the near circle. Throws it down to the goal line. Gets it back from Carlson. Crosby again. Tried to dish to Carlson. Chance to break that one up on a lazy pass and Norris sends it ahead and almost a break for Tae Thompson, but Raquel comes back across the line. He is tied up and the Sabres clear it down the ice. Mets a nice job just overpowering his man. Able to get underneath him, spun around, get a hold of that puck and send it to 200 ft. Lion keeps the play moving with 4 seconds to go here in the period and the Penguins will start the third on the power play. 28 seconds remaining in the Johnson penalty, but it’s a 4-2 lead for Buffalo through two periods of play. How did they get there, those Sabres? Well, Brian Kosio will tell you all there is to know right now as he takes you through our second intermission. Thank you, Dan. Thank you, Rob. A lot of goals to tell you about. Four for Buffalo in that period. Thompson, Koulique, Zooker, and well, Koulique again. Paul Hamilton will join us live as uh he will help us get close to the end of this preseason. And then next Thursday night, it’ll be for real against the New York Rangers. But for now, at least a period to go in the preseason finale. Buffalo’s up 4 to2. The intermission report is coming up next here on Buffalo Sabers Radio. Buffalo up 4 to2 as we welcome you into the intermission report. I’m Brian Kiel. Paul Hamilton coming up here in just one moment. And our second period stats brought to you by Level Financial Advisors, helping you retire better. Visit levelfa.com. Well, the Sabres matched their shot total in the first, 12 more. They’re up to 24. Pittsburgh with just three in the period. So, it’s 24 to 12 right now. Buffalo doubling Pittsburgh’s total so far. Uh faceoffs, the Sabres at over 58%, 25 out of 43. Power play, they’re one of three. Zooker’s goal, which made it 3-1, came on the power play, but Koulique with two, Zooker, as I mentioned on the power play, and Thompson scoring on another nice setup from Josh Norris. So, that’s where we stand here as we bring Paul Hamilton in. And uh Paul, I know Wednesday night when we were at Keybank Center, we saw Josh Norris make some really skilled play for his own goals. Here, he sets up Thompson really nicely to get Buffalo on the board. Yeah, very nice play by by Norris there to uh and and the thing is too he got the steal. You know, first of all, you know, he uh you know, causes the turnover at center ice. He really easily goes around Clifton, who just had gotten hammered by Malenstein, but he was up. Uh Norris, I mean, Clifton was flatfooted and Norris went around like he wasn’t even there. Thompson goes straight to the net and winds up in the net. So, um, you know, that is a combination that has really done well together. What is that? I think Thompson’s fourth preseason goal if I’m not mistaken. So, uh, correct. Norris assist. Norris four assists. So, uh, and Thompson has four goals and I think his assist on Zooker’s goal was his third. So, he has seven points in the preseason. And so I think this game is more of what Lindy Ruff had in mind uh when when in in the home game what he’s getting from his team here on the road against Pittsburgh. I would agree. And Koulik scoring twice. Paul, I know that’s a player that you feel like maybe could take another step offensively this year. And both of his goals are fairly similar. Tuck taking a shot and where is Koulique? He’s around the net for both of those those goals to be able to put him in. And that’s the thing, he realizes where goals is are scored now. Before, you know, in the AHL, he could get away with just blast a puck from the circles and you’ll get your 25 goals and but they’ve really taught him Seth Aert down in Rochester and now Lindy Ruff in Buffalo how to be a good two-way player. And if you want to score goals, get around the crease. You know, Jason Zooker is around uh Koulique a lot and he bustes chops a lot, but he also gives him good advice. Who also is around the crease a lot? Jason Zooker. Again, look at his goal and look at his both his goals in the preseason. It’s it’s because he’s always around the crease. If you want to be around the crease, yeah, you can say it’s a lucky goal. Mirishave normally isn’t going to drop that puck, but if you’re Kik, what if he does? just stand there. If if he doesn’t drop the puck, then there’s a face off. But if he does, you got to tap in. And guess what? He dropped the puck. Yeah. Very, very nice. Paul, do you foresee um I know Koulique played a his, you know, la last month of the season or so uh with Thompson. Do you see that it’ll likely be Norris with Thompson at least to start the season, do you think? Yeah, I wondered before preseason started if if they would keep Koulique there and let Norris maybe play with Tuck, but uh Lindy Ruff has had Norris with Thompson the whole way and Benson when he’s ready to play has been the left winger there. So uh I I still yeah see that as the way they’re going to do it. You know, Tuck has played with Mloud, although I would think Greenway plays with Zooker and Mloud when he’s ready. And that would leave Tuck playing with Koulique. And so far, what we’ve seen, that’s not a bad combination. You know, what we’ve seen so far in this game. So, uh, so far so good. That’s right. Paul Hamilton with us here. 40 minutes complete, one period to go in the preseason. Buffalo up 4-2. Paul Alex Lion is in goal here today. We know with the injury news today with Lucinan that Lion will likely be in the Nets for the opener against the Rangers. Uh he’s faced 12 shots here. Um what do you feel like I guess you’ve seen from him just overall preseason practice even your your discussions with him? Um and maybe even just maybe a little bit more insight on maybe if he has to be the number one like where do you feel that stands? I think the word that comes to mind right away when you ask me that is steady. You know, he’s been steady. He hasn’t made, you know, the highlight reel ESPN type save, but really hasn’t needed to. When you’re in position and where you’re supposed to be and playing goal, your angles, well, you you usually don’t wind up out of position. You know, Marty Baron used to wind up on the ESPN highlights because he’d give the puck away in the corner and had to come flying back into the crease and he’d dive across and the puck would hit the shaft of his stick as he’s diving across and and he’d keep it out. Well, you really don’t want to wind up with that kind of save because you were in the corner giving the puck away, you know. So, um, he’s been pretty I and you know what, and I said it on Twitter, it drives me insane, and I, uh, Mark Bjon and I are going to disagree on this, and I know he’s a goalie. He thinks that being down on the one knee, leaving the whole top of the net open, which is what goalie coaches teach right now, is he tells me, he goes, “The percentages say you will you will make more saves that way, but you leave the whole top of the net open.” and Lion did just what he’s taught to do and he left the whole top of the net open and Brunicki made no mistake there. But I I don’t know. I hate that. I I just don’t like goalenders leaving the top of the net open like that because players know this is the NHL and players can pick that top corner. Um but you know, as Marty tells me, percentages say that you’re better off by taking everything else away and leaving the top of the net open. Yeah, Paul, after tonight here, obviously one period left to go here in the preseason. The Sabres don’t play again until Thursday. Uh what do you think is the most important thing that you feel like has to happen in between now and when it counts for real next Thursday night? Well, if you remember, both Lindy Ruff and Kevin Adams talked about a retreat and Lindy told us, I think the first day of training camp, it’s something he did with New Jersey a couple of times and he thought it worked really well. So that’s where they’re headed to. Uh they get on the plane and they’re going to wherever the retreat is. And it’s a private thing. We may never know where the retreat is. And quite honestly, we don’t need to know. I mean, this is a this weekend is going to be a player weekend where they are going to be together. They’re going to do team bonding things. I don’t know whether it’s games or I remember way back it was the year. Well, I do remember the year because it was it was 911. It was the It was 3 days afterwards. I was on a plane to South Carolina where the Sabres were doing training camp. I was the only one on the plane and me and my wife cuz she came with me and they were on the beach doing like team building drills and that type of thing. Uh doing fun things but things competitions against each other on the beach. No, I don’t know if that’s what Lindy Ruff has in mind. I I have no idea what he has in mind and again we don’t need to know but that’s where they’re going to be this weekend and then they’ll be back on the ice in Buffalo Monday to start practices. Okay, great. Thank you Paul. We’ll talk one more time on the post game. Okay. All right, Paul Hamilton there. Four to2 Buffalo leading it. We will get you the scores some around the rest of the NHL after this timeout as the inter intermission report rolls on here. Preseason game number six on Buffalo Sabres Radio. You’re listening to the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network. Welcome back to Pittsburgh. Third period is just getting underway. Sabres power play. Penalty killer beg you pardon with two seconds left in it. Ryan Johnson outstanding in the box. Back into the play. Meanwhile, centering pass goes back to Carlson. His play back to the post. Deflected back to the point. Carlson keeps it in play. This is Raquel. Penguins still on the attack. Sabres back to full strength. Save made as Lion looks off to his right and makes that stop. And the Buffalo Sabres [Music] continue to lead 4-2. And looks like Gorgiev is in goal here for the third period down to my right. Here’s a chance right in front of Murev as the Sabres come close against the Penguins number two goalender of the night. Ben Kindle gets it out to the line but now brought back in. Taage Thompson with a shot that deflects to the far corner. Penguins looking to bring it out. Kindle drops it back. And now Pittsburgh will get to the Buffalo line and chip it in. Bryson defending at the side of the net. Knocks his man down. Sabres Thompson in the corner. Can’t clear it out. Connor Clifton for the Penguins. Kicks it down along the left boards into the corner for Kendall. He’s double teamed as Bryson tries to dig it free with help from Quinn. Quinn gets it ahead to Norris. Some Buffalo skating from right to left. Get it out over center. Nor Doris is flattened as he got in front of the Pittsburgh bench, but did get it over the red line and deep into the Pittsburgh zone. Penguins Harrison Brunick scored a goal in this game back in the second period. A highlight goal for Brunick as he tucked one just up and over the shoulder with not a lot of room on Alex Lion. Gorgi about to handle the puck behind the net. Comes outside the zone near center, but this is a turnover and the Sabres on a counter. Gain the Pittsburgh line with speed. Kik with a shot. That one is stopped. Rebound. Byron with a backhand. And that one’s stopped by Mirishov. Sabres keep it in. Byron far circle across now for Karov. Comoff to the bumper spot. Krebs with a shot and the rebound looking for it. Alex Tuck could knock it on the end of it and the Penguins able to clear it outside the line as Hollander gets it down towards the Sabres end of the ice. 4-2 Buffalo with the lead. Here’s Raquel with a steal deep in the Sabres zone trying to throw it across to the far post. Buffalo getting it back again and it’s flipped up towards center ice. A little bit out of the reach that time of the Buffalo forward group. Zucker, Mloud, and Don on the ice now. Pittsburgh in front. Raquel with a chance and he is robbed by Gory who got his pat on that one. And the puck gets outside the line to center. Pittsburgh held to just 15 shots so far in this game as Mloud has it back in the Buffalo zone. His pass looking for Zooker. Picked off. Penguins will put it deep. Gorgia behind the net with a touch. He leaves it for Ryan Johnson. Passes it to the far side of the ice. And the Sabres now getting the Pittsburgh zone. Looking in front. Here’s Malenstein with a shot. And that one is stopped by Mirror Shot. Kzak and Malenstein teaming up along with Danfort to get that scoring chance as Latang has it now inside the Pittsburgh zone. Pass played onto the right wing. Penguins. Mantha leaves it. Malcin down to the corner. Back up to Mantha. Back to the line. Latang plays it across for Kale Jones. Couldn’t handle the pass. Here’s a pass up the middle looking for Danforth who comes up with it down below the Pittsburgh goal line. He’ll play it back to the point for a shot. Mirror shot with a stop but a big rebound. Kak is on it. Sabres changing the back end here as they have the offensive zone. Play behind the net. Quinn trying to trap it with his body on the wall. Now over comes Tage Thompson. Penguins go back behind their net. Sabres causing all sorts of problems here as Caleb Jones plays it across and Latang out the far side. Quinn’s taking a stumble on the back of the Pittsburgh net gets back up and the Penguins will get it outside the line and Thomasino the rest of the way into the Buffalo zone. [Music] Krebs can’t clear, but following up with the play was Thompson. Penguins unable to keep it in at the line as the pass goes across. Tommy Novak can’t keep it in. Now Thomas Kendall with a shot trying to go short side high on Gorgiev hit the post on that one. Now the Sabres lift it into the Penguin zone over the far corner. Brunick on this near side won’t touch it as a pass gets past him, but Kindle gains the buffalo line with the dump in right on Gorky. He keeps it in play. Nice play by Byum to leave it. Now the Sabres with three on this left side of the ice. Led by Payton Krebs. Cross ice pass picked off and the Penguins come back the other way. Tommy Novak starts the rush down the wing across. Derer with a pass and a one-time chance by Hollander is stopped. Derer with a good feed for Hollander with the shot. Rolachari will play it back to the point. Brunick with a shot. That one off the post. Chance right in front again and it’s stopped by Gorgiev who’s had a busy start here to this third period but keeping it the 4-2 with a little help from his friend the goal post twoon-one for Pittsburgh. Savers tried to get back and partially broke up the play, but still the Penguins who were held to minimal shots back in that second period, just four, already with six shots here in the third. So that is a marked difference from what the Sabres had seen in that second period. Looks like Buffalo might have called a timeout here and that’s exactly what’s happened. The Sabres Lindy Ruff has called a timeout. He is the one leading the conversation at the bench. Not liking how his team is playing to start this period. Gives us a chance here to remind you that you can vote for the Sabres goal song for this upcoming season. The favorites have been submitted. It’s now down to five final songs. One by Buffalo. Sabres get it out near center. Josh Don taken away by Carlson. Dylan wins it back again for Zucker left side on the injury. He’ll chip it down to the goal line. Zooker trying to keep it on the wall. Carlson and Crosby get together to play it up ahead. Billy Quaven drops it off as he crosses the line for Crosby and that shot is blocked. Good stick there by Josh Don. Blocked the shot from 87. And we get a timeout on the ice with Buffalo leading 4-2 in the third period. 1347 to go. You’re listening to the Savers Hockey Network. Alex Tuck with two assists to lead the Sabres in this 4-2 lead to this point in the hockey game. All four goals for Buffalo coming in the second period, outscoring the Penguins four to one. Dan Dunle and Rob Ray in Pittsburgh at PPG Paints Arena. 1347 to go in the third period. Draw the Buffalo zone. One by Pittsburgh. Quick shot and that is blocked. Norris with the block and he is very slow to get up. This is your major concern in preeason. Goes without saying. Morris gets to the bench under his own strength pretty well at the end of the moment there. See if he continues in this game. Still standing at the Buffalo bench, not yet close to the door as Norris. That shot came for the point and Norris got the brunt of that one as Latang let it go. Norris stays on the bench for now. So he’s just trying to work off the sting. Referees are meeting in front of the timekeepers box [Music] and we’re going to have a call of some kind here. Buffalo penalty bench miner. Too many men on the ice. So the Penguins will go the power play. I don’t need to repeat why you just heard it. 1329 to go in the third period. [Music] And the Penguins will get a chance here to get this back to a one-goal game. [Music] Penguins have not scored a power play goal in this game. They have an opportunity to do so. Penguins now having been awarded five shots in this third period. So shot totals go up and down. Meanwhile, there’s a play at the net. They try to jam it in. No whistle. And we’ve got a goal. Sydney Crosby. And it looks like Raquel down at the goal line at the far post. Gorg was down off the draw. Comes back to the point and the Penguins work it to the top of the far circle. Then the goal line play looking for Mulan and it’s jammed in by Raquel who comes in late and the Sabres complaining that the referee didn’t blow the play dead as the puck was in the area of Gorgia but not covered up. So it is indeed a onegoal game. The linesman and referee are talking things over out near the center ice circle, but there’s been no indication that this goal is going to be taken off the board. Well, we’ve got a goal that’s apparently going to stand. So, it’s 4-3 with 1315 to go in the third period. Buffalo with the lead. That’s a very quick power play goal for the Penguins. Sabres off the draw. Get it into the Pittsburgh in Brunick back after it. Bumped by Payton Krebs. Turned over by Connor Clifton. And then Tommy Novak gets it back again. Gets the Penguins to center. The Sabres played off the boards back into the Pittsburgh zone. No icing on the play. Krebs on the back of Clifton who plays it out to center ice right onto the stick of Jacob Bryson. Bryson will play it ahead looking for Yuri Koulik but they did not connect. So now an icing call against Buffalo and up over the boards the Penguins make a line change here with the offensive zone draw coming up if Kenny Malcin is on the ice. Raquel’s third of the preeason from Malcolin and Latang at 645 a power play goal. Penguins win the draw, take the shot. Glove high short side. Glove down by Gork and he’ll hold on. Gork started this third period after Alex Lion played the first two for the Penguins. They pretty much went half and half with their goending tandem tonight. Tristan Jarry just over the halfway mark of the hockey game turned it over to Sergey Mirishoff who we saw back at the prospects tournament in Buffalo just before camp open. drawing the Buffalo end. Sabres win it to the line kicked in by Carlson and the Penguins. Malcolm will sweep it across to the far boards. Brazo playing it down to the corner. Malcolin comes back, lays it to the point now. Mantha in the corner looking for Brazo in this near corner right wing side halfway up the wall. Malcolin loses it and the Sabres get it to the Pittsburgh line but no possession. Much different look to this period. Almost eight minutes in. Then we saw in the second for Buffalo when they put up four. It’s another icing coming up here against the Sabres on a failed pass attempt over here to the left wing boards looking for Kak and the draw will come back into the Buffalo end of the ice. Pittsburgh open the scoring at 859 of the hockey game. Thomasino second from Kindle. Then in the second period, Tage Thompson, Yuri Koulik, Jason Zooker, and Yuri Koulik’s second of the game. The four goals for Buffalo squeeze in the Brunick goal for the Penguins who score one early here in the third on the power play. And it’s a one-goal game. Buffalo up top four to three. Buck comes back to the Pittsburgh line. Couple of players tied up back in the Saber zone and we got a holding penalty it looks like and I think it’s going against Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh penalty number 41. 2 minutes holding. And that is indeed the call going against Billy Koan. [Music] So, the young man out of Finland, former Carolina second round pick, part of the return from the Carolina trade for Jake Gensel, sits in the box and the Sabres go to the power play with Norris in the faceoff dot. Tae Thompson out there with him. Alex, Tuck, Zooker, and Bo Byron play below the goal line in the Pittsburgh in Buffalo from right to left. So, they’re on their left wing side now behind the net. The Penguins able to come up with it and it’s banked off the boards but not across center as Zooker knocks it down. He’ll send it back to Byum who’s deep in the Buffalo zone. Watched by Nola. Norris gets to center. Option to carry. He’ll leave it on the board. Zooker back to Norris down in the corner. Double team. Puck comes free. Tage Thompson to the far circle. Quick shot. Gloved down and cleared by Pittsburgh. Alex Tuck got the shot away. Mur the swatting save with the glove and then he got some help from his friends there to clear the puck. 45 seconds gone on the power play. Sabres carry it up to center. Tage Thompson takes the drop, gains the line left side with Zooker in behind the net. Caleb Jones with a chance. Little hesitation there on Norris to the line and out. Now Raquel will get to the Buffalo line. Crafty player for the Penguins. He’s got Latang with him. Raquel to the net with a shot and that one have got a piece of comes to the near wall out front for another chance and that one’s fired wide as Achari in front. Another deflection backand by Achari. Oh, what a scene by Pittsburgh against the Sabres and Alexander Gorgv and the Penguins are short-handed still for another 42 seconds. Gorgv closes the door after the Sabres came close at the other end. Kind of a swatting save with a glove of Mirishave. But when Pittsburgh countered and Raquel started to rush the other way, he had some company with him and the Penguins not shy about going after it. Drawing the Buffalo in Char. Connor Der will step in. [Music] Draw one by the Sabres and Mloud. Bryson skates it out to center. Drops it back. Mloud to the red line now. Crossing the Pittsburgh line on the left side. Given a hit there as he tried to make the pass across. Sabres keeping it in. Here’s Quinn. Left circle. Quinn holds it. He’ll play it back to the point. 15 seconds to go in the Sabres man advantage. They’re up by one. Third period. Down to the goal line. Don for Quinn. Don at the goal line. Right at the net. Quinn again. No shot. Power plays about to expire here. Penguins back to full strength. Bryson plays it around the boards and Achar’s got an avenue here to skate it out for Pittsburgh. Left side to center. Stepping up as Mloud and that forces that puck up and out of play. We get a timeout on the ice. Sabres power play comes up empty-handed. They still lead it, however, 4-3 with 9:30 to go here in the third. In Pittsburgh, you’re listening to the Sabres Hockey Network. Here’s the referee with a call. Buffalo number 72 holding the stick. Tage Thompson with a hold of the stick. And with this onegoal game, the Penguins now are about to go to the power play. And the Penguins will line it up to the right of Gorg. Difference or a tale of two periods. Better way to say it. 12 shots on goal in this third for the Penguins who had four in the second. Sabres with seven in this frame. Faceoff in the Buffalo zone. Battle forward in the corner off to the right of Gorg. Chance for a clear here for Buffalo and Alex Tuck despite the linesman being there able to firing down the ice. Alex making sure the linesman is all right after he had to whip that puck around him and Latang will drop it back at the Pittsburgh line. Here comes Sydney Crosby to center. Raquel right side of the wing. Drop pass at the line. Well read intercepted by Danport tipping it ahead for Alex Tuck. There’ll be no strip that time of Malcolin and Crosby comes back the other way. drops for Raquel to the net for the deflection. That was a pass from Mulan and he missed. Crosby wrap around scores at the far post. They got there before Alexander Gorg. And this game is now tied at four with 606 to go. in the third period. Well, Razer had mentioned that Crosby has not played a lot of ice time, at least up to this third period. But on the power play, he’s going to get that ice time. And any battles down low around the net, that’s 87’s home right there. gathers it at the near post, takes it backand to the far post and Bjorg does not get there in time. There was no interference on the Sabres goalender to get there either. So you can take that off the board. Latang was in the area but nowhere near the goalender and it’s 4-4. We got 6 minutes to go here to wrap up this preseason. Sabres back on the offense though. Here’s Quinn on the near wall. left wing side down for Alex Tuck for Norris.
