REDS POSTCAST: The Cincinnati Reds MOP the Chicago Cubs; Now Even With New York Mets for NL Wildcard
[Music] This is the Reds post, your instant game reaction for the Cincinnati Reds, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. [Music] Hello, Mr. Broom. Do you feel like talking about a sweep today on the Reds post? Welcome everybody to Locked on Red’s postcast brought by Locked on Reds and the Locked On Media Network, your team every day. I’m Tim Daniel. I am a lifelong Cincinnati Reds getting a one- nothing win over the Chicago Cubs. We not only discussed the Reds mopping the Chicago Cubs. I don’t have a mop head. It’s probably not good idea to do that. But now also being even even with the New York Mets and having the tiebreaker for the National League Wildard spot. If you are just checking me out for the first time, welcome. We are so glad to have you. Please be sure to hit that notification button here on YouTube so you can only get my show after each and every single Reds game, but you can get Jeff and Steve Monday through Friday on locked on Reds as well. This episode is brought to you by 5Hour Energy. Enough with boring flavorless caffeine. It’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5Hour Energy Shots. Go to 5our Energy.com or Amazon today on today’s show. We in this, baby. We’re in this. The Reds mopped up the Chicago Cubs today. The Met New York Mets lost. And now with a week to go, we’re back up. We’re going to talk about all of that today. Terry Francon pulled Andrew Abbott with four and two/3 and it was the right call and Gavin Lux came through when the Reds needed it the most. All that and a whole lot more and of course I’m going to hear from all of you our everydayers. Let’s get right to it. This is what you’ll be talking about. You know, sometimes sometimes one nothing is all it takes. Sometimes you have the edge of your seat cuz Tony Santion can’t find the strike zone. Sometimes you just got to rely on luck. And today all of those things happened which if you’re you know watching the Bengals today and you’re like this day sucks for Cincinnati sports the Reds said I got you because not only did they get them but they took care of business. They have one run today and won this game. A win is a win is a win. And I’m sure some people will come in the comments later and they’ll be like, “They got lucky. I don’t care if they got lucky. I don’t care how they’re great. I don’t care if they’re a bat.” Are they a flawed team? Yeah, they’re a flaw team. We covered it all year. But are they now in a situation where they are literally leading for that final wild card spot? It’s It’s beautiful. And you know, you got the Pirates coming to town and you know who is pitching on Wednesday. I got it wrong this whole time. I thought it was Tuesday. Maybe the Pirates moved it around. But uh and for the Reds, Hunter Green’s pitching up Wednesday. So Terry Francona is playing the idea of if they get in, Hunter Green is going to be ready for game one in Los Angeles, right? I uh I like the thought of that. And we’re also now in a situation where the team has struggled against the division all year. All year. I mean, I talked about this a million times. They’ve now won two straight series this week against DNL Central. They went, what is it? Five and six and one. Yeah, six and one this week against the National League Central. They have 80 wins. They were like, this is stunning. And I was on here saying, “Oh my god, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it’s going the way it is. I can’t believe it’s over.” Jeff and Steve were like, “I think they’re cooked.” We all thought they were cooked and they aren’t. Johnny D says, “Can they beat the Pirates?” Uh Ronda says, “What’s the Red Season series against the Cubs?” I have to look it up, but they did win the season series against the Cubs because they took two out of three in the last one. So, and then they took all four games here. So, four, six, seven, eight, eight and four. No, no, no. Eight and six. Eight and five. Eight and five. Thanks, Booster. I appreciate it. I can’t math today because I’m so excited. But today, they get it done. They play They just kind of play all the right moves. They’re very sound defensively. The pitching is awesome. They get the one hit they needed. And really, I didn’t think offensively they were all that bad. I know they only had five hits today. Um, but we saw a little bit more of that aggressive again. So, um, they get to, you know, again, we have Marte stealing bases and that’s pretty nice to see. And we have, you know, Matt Mlan rips a double down the line and Gavin Lux gets a hit as well. And Ellie de la Cruz even though, you know, goes down and gets a hit, too, that he had to really go down the strikes and p and knock that one in there into the into there. So, um, it was just a huge day for the Reds. They did was they did just enough to win. It had just enough to win and that’s all you can ask for right now in this late September October stretch. Now you’re looking ahead and you got the Pirates coming to town. The Mets got to go face these Cubs who are struggling. It’s two struggling teams right now. Wednesday you have Hunter Green versus Paul Skins. There is a lot that goes into this next week where I would much rather be having this conversation than the conversation we thought we were going to be having. So, I’m very happy. I’m very stoked. Um hopefully the Cubbies are due this week. I never thought I’d say those words, but hopefully against the Mets, they can take care of business for us because the Reds, they’re trying to make it to our 3 and Central teams are in. Obviously, that was the Cub’s goal this week. Um, Branch says, “I’m off work the last day of the season, the last week of the season. Do I dare?” Text me. Hey, text me about that, by the way. Um, but yeah, go Red Legs this week, obviously. And you only hear this one time, so if you want to screen grab it and use it against me in the future when the Reds struggle against them, fine. But this week is the one time and one time only, I will say, go Cubs. Terry Frank Kona today. Managed this team. so well in a close game like this. The way that he handled the pitching staff was unbelievably awesome. And we’re going to talk about his decisions he made in more right after this. This episode is brought to you by Zipix Toothpicks. They watch every single game all the way through to the World Series so you don’t have to. Let’s get to our turning point today. Time to reveal where the game was won or lost. It’s the turning point. How about Gavin Lux’s RBI double in the bottom of the third to make it a one- nothing game bringing in Matt Mlan and it was all we need. Johnny says right here, “I’m still in disbelief.” I also am still in disbelief. Kyle Waver is in the chat. It’s good to see a good friend Kyle. What is this stupid life right now? Um Ned Flanders says the turning point was Jacob Young twice. Did anyone not Has anyone not seen those catches yet that he had today? Because if you haven’t, go look them up right now. It’s two of the greatest catches I think I’ve ever seen. Look who’s in the chat today. Old friend Steven Offenbaker. Should have had you join me today, buddy. Actually, um all right. So Terry Francona is someone that if you’ve listened to us here in lockdown throughout the season, we’ve um we’ve been very up and down on like we’ve like he’s definitely improved some things in this team, but there’s been some decisions that have really shaken our made us shake our heads over the years. Um now with that being said, the way he managed this Cub series has probably been his best managerial work of the season so far. And I talked about yesterday, I really loved I didn’t love the starting lineup, but what he did with it to pay that chess match with Craig Council I I thought was great. And it’s so funny, Steve popped in. So we’re we obviously we have a group text, me, Jeff, and Steve, and we could just kind of talk throughout the games at times. And Steve goes, I’m not quite sure I would go ahead and go ahead and send uh Andrew Abbott out there for the fifth inning. And I said, I don’t mind him starting the fifth inning, but I’m very okay with the fact he got pulled after four and two/3. I really love that Terry for Incredible like recognized like I know I need him. I know I need him to give us the best he’s got, but today he doesn’t have it. I probably do need more innings out of him, but today I got to pull him. Even though he was at four and two/3s of shut out innings, the control was everywhere. even though he only had one walk, he wasn’t as as on top of it as he really is. Um, it was really nice and it was really really good to see. So Nick Martinez comes in two and a thirds balls out. H Branch. Okay. Branch says, “Would you say Tito is locked on?” Absolutely. He I would. So he goes out there and throws two and a third. And that was awesome, man. Everyone in the chat today. I love the chat being as lively as it is in days like this. It’s awesome. Graham Ash comes out and throws an inning and he’s awesome. Um throws an inning, gets a strike out, does go up a hit and Tony Santion had to battle, right? Wasn’t the tonal total Santion that we see all the time. Um, but found a way to get it going and found a way to kind of just stay alive and draw through two walks. Derek Johnson goes out there and talks to him obviously and is like, “Calm down, buddy. Just breathe.” And goes out there and takes care of business. I mean, that last that last pitch that that strike to end the game was nice. Was really, really smooth. But also, I think what’s important is that we’re at this point in the year where we’ve got a week left of games. And so we got six games left. And if they do in fact make the playoffs, Andre only threw 88 86 pitches today. You know, he’s probably going to pitch in that Milwaukee series. You’d have to think the way that things line up. Um so, you know, not too overdone. Uh Bullpen gets a full day off tomorrow like Carrie mentioned. Um and so that’s pretty nice as well. And now we’re looking at a situation where you got a lot of rest on these guys and you have a chance to kind of go out there and make a play and get some things done, enjoy the day off and get right back to business. So, I love it. I’m really happy that they’re doing this. Um, but we’ll see how things roll from there. And then Gavin Lux today bringing the Reds the absolute needed heat on that one play. We’re going to talk about Gavin Lux also then the show right after this. Most people can’t name all their financial accounts or even what they’re worth. It’s a beautiful day here as be a Reds fan and I can’t tell you how much I love it and I cannot wait to hear what Jeff and Steve have to say about this as well on Monday. I know that they are going to be super stoked as well. Gavin Lux today, I think in a game like today has probably earned the right to be the locked on player of the game. This is the locked on player of the game. Gavin Lux is a guy who’s been really up and down this year, right? Actually, Troy, I mean, I actually joked about this. I was like, should I name Jacob Young the player of the game? Uh, can we get him Red’s tickets? Uh, can we get him in a Red’s uni, you know, before in two weeks? Um, that’d be pretty nice to see. But two for four with the loan RBI, hitting second in the order. um dhing today and just kind of gave the muchneeded hit. Obviously, like we said, Abby gets pulled early and to see him kind of go out there and just deliver and give the one hit the Reds really needed. Um certainly kind of puts the red put the Reds on their back offensively. And like I said, I didn’t think offense was too bad today. Wasn’t great. Wasn’t awful, especially with how good Jameson Tai on pitch today. He was really good. Yeah. Got to tip credit tip your hat to him as well. They had that groin injury there for a second. I thought, “Oh man, you know, maybe that’s going to give the Reds a window to Kay more runs.” And I he was just fine. But still find a way to win. Shout out the pitching staff, shout out the defense, and shout out Gavin Lux for an absolutely awesome win for the Cincinnati Reds. And now after all this emotion this whole week, we’re off tomorrow. And then we’re back at it on Tuesday when the Pittsburgh Pirates come to GABP to face the Reds for the final game series at Great American Ballpark. And starting Tuesday for the Red Lights is Brady Singer. He is 14-10 with a 386 erra. He’ll be going against Johan Oeda who is 2-0 with a 352 RA and just 30 innings. First pitch of that game will be at 6:40, so I’ll be on a little later in that day. Everyone, thank you so much for hanging out with me tonight. Einim Daniel. Now we gota roo for the Cubs to beat the Mets. And that does feel dirty, but if that’s what it takes for the Red Legs to get in, then darn it. Let’s go Reds.
The Cincinnati Reds capped off a perfect weekend with a 1-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon at Great American Ball Park, completing the four-game sweep—or as Cespedes BBQ calls it, a “Mop.” Gavin Lux delivered the only run of the game with an RBI double in the third inning. While Andrew Abbott struggled with his command, the Reds bullpen rose to the occasion and kept the Cubs off the board. With the Mets losing to the Nationals and Cincinnati holding the tiebreaker, the Reds now control their own destiny for the final NL Wild Card spot.

If the season ended today, the Reds would be in the playoffs. I also noticed that if the Cleveland Guardians and the Houston Astros ended up tied, the Guardians would have the Tiebreaker. Imagine if the Reds and Guardians made it in the playoffs.
The best series so far Hope it doesnt tire em out before too long
Put on your rally hats Reds! I wanna wildcard!
IF U SAY THEY GOT LUCKY THEN THERE TROLLS NOT REDS FANS. SO TELL THEM TO F OFF
Let's go @reds !!!
NOT ME I DIDNT THINK THAT AND I DIDNT LISTEN TO THE DEAD SHOWS CAUSE I KNEW IT WASN'T TRUE
We can conceivably be watching Reds post season baseball a week from Tuesday
ENJOY DAY OFF 😄
As a yankee fan I hope you reds take that last wild card spot nobody had you guys going far this season especially over the overrated mets you guys are earning it
Don't tease me Reds. You can't get this close and not make the post season.
REDS KICK HEINIE !!!
It was an excellent series. The Cubs laid down for four games trying to get a glorified beer league team known as the Reds into the playoffs by hopefully eliminating the Mets. Well played Cubs!
Let's goooo!
Hello Tim, what a game. Have we had two shutouts in a series? Great timely hit by Lux. Great game.
Have to admit I counted them out. Good luck Reds
Hoping for cinci!!
The Reds' magic number is 6 to make the playoffs. Let's gooooooo!
worries about Pittsburgh REDS, who have sucked this year, playing bad teams
Tony = 2026 and beyond closer
THE REDS WILL OR WON'T MAKE THE PLAYOFFS AND IT WILL BE NICK KRALLS FAULT. wHY BECAUSE nick, let us play the first two months of the season with a double a team. Shut out 8 times. mclain steer shouldrer injuries, benson sucked last year, fraley hurt all year austin hayes out all year, ces hurt all year marte out most of the year tyler hurt much of the year and begining of season. Reds had two players of 9 batting. First david bell he had this team we would be the rockies 43-158 hhehhe. TITO managed the f out of this team. shut out eight times we played 500 ball we should have been 6 games above 500 and walking into playoff. Who starts season with 2 regulars, we don't make playoff we lost it in april and may. Because we had basically the only intact starting five that surived look at dodgers they lost like 5 starters. We got lucky on injuries. BUT NICK AND OWNERSHIP F D US. WE HAD pitching no one else did and they got us to 500 without a closer alexias sucked. What does poor team do pray and hope. Dodgers yanks they reload. Simple they wrote this year off and hoped the fans would understand. I don't, you see the leagues starting staffs and say dude we have the best 5. lets go buy a guy or trade we have chance. NICK KRALL SHOULD BE FIRED AND OWNERSHIP, SHOULD BE ON HOT SEAT. they DIDN'T SPEND MONEY when all we needed was a couple of old proven dudes to get us to see if the mash unit 7 who was who. austin hays saved us playing over his head. no real lf, 3b, 1st 2b rf and second and third string catch wynne trevino saved us. We had pitching after two weeks angels dodgers yanks mets rockies red sox big money clubs with talent we could have shagged a older vet on their club for a chase petty. we needed just two more proven hitters we only have no scary hitter. Folks we needed to win 2 more game in april and may to be in playoffs now, with our pitching one dinger in thos 8 shutouts could be the difference to fighting uphill and coasting resting We have pitching to play deep we still have a pop gun offense with no threat, OH, ROCKIES WHITE SOX MARLINS WERE REBUILDING LUIS ROBERTS, should have been on our team the second week, sox flounderling he was sucking. nick krall had ace high and when asked how many cards he wanted he said no I'll play these. WE didn't lose it in last week ownership and krall but these kids in impossible situation and now they are up against the wall it's 50 50 if they get in. BUT WITH ONE DOMINANT BAT BRETT ROOKER SAY, all season like JEFFRIE SAID WE WOULD BE IN PLAYOFF NOW. jeez guys if we all know what we needed why didn't ownership and nick, because winning is the most important thing making money is
why the reds should be in playoff with 84 wins going into the last week. Folks the difference between 500 and in playoff is one game a month. IT'S THE BULL DURHAM analogy what's the diffence between a star and someone selling insurance 25 weeks one extra hit a week that' makes a 250 hitter a 300 hitter. the Reds didn't in april and may two more wins why because they were pitching lights out and had intact pitching staff. We played two month with two starter tj and elly and a band of players on rehab that on any big market team would be rehabbing or in minor.s ONE BAT ONE BAT IN HINDSIGHT, but Again I looked at the tommy john in first coupl weeks and realize one thru 5 pitching we had the best surviving staff, We wasted it, cheap cheap cheap.
DAVID BELL MANAGED THE FIRST TWO MONTH TITO HAD US AT 500, with only two offensive players ready to played we would be the rockies 10 under 500. Enough with the Tito b.s. he was given a team with no offensive and he had us at 500 after two months when the guys got healthy. b.s. we played a season 150 games with steer and mclain not able to perform we see it now. Look at the difference with them healthy we played a whole season it counted. mCLAIN is still not back with have 7 number 7 hitters, in lineup of a championship team. YOU put our lineup against other good teams. AGAIN my rule one is who starting pitching staff is most intact no tommie johns , RULE TWO IS TELL ME A TEAMS 7,8, 9 hitter and I'll give you playoff teams. WE HAVE 7 GUYS THAT if they were our 789 hitters we would be fine okay 6 7 8 9, if Steer looking like hes keeper going forward is a 7 hitter you got or marte keeper but those two have to be a 6 and 7 hitter not ons thru five. WE have a tyler at 8 and kebryan which is okay not great hitter you can have one blank in the chamber. We can survive with tj mclain healed next year with pop back and elly 3 being JOE MORGAN THAT'S WHO he is not judge he's 25 dinger with 50 steals guy. So people we are two players away from great balanced lineup top to bottom. That's all you need we need two boopers in middle that all. You have them marte's 25 steer 25 mclain and elly 25 tyler 20 tj 20 , becasue that plays if you have a 4 and 5 hitters you have to hav two with pop or you wasted yur money on 4 they pitch around.
so, rule three is why we are even were we are at and it is simple the old school innings eater wow those days are gone with pitching to contact when everyone can hit 20 dingers. We are were we are at because the top two pitchers ace 1 and 1b cancel each other out when you play someone. 3 toss up but good teams win 100 games not 86 because your 4 and 5 are heads above the other teams crappy dudes, Teams always think they are going to be okay with a shitting 4 and 5, great teams make up big money team with great offensives but we can't, we don't have the money to afford dominant hitter thru lineup. singer and martinez are the reason we are were we are. They are great four and five look at the league, hunter against a shemes tuesday they cancel each other out head to head, but martinez and singer those are games we win. YOU NEED FIVE, next season martinez thank yo will walk 21 million but Singer sign his ass. we have rhrett and chase for 5 spot they are electric not innins eaters. plus we will have depth in starting. rule 3 4 and 5th starters and you don't every have excess in starting pitching and you don't have innings eater or bullpen days you destroy bullpen by august when you need them that's a one in blue moon when lodolo gets flu before game, never use bullpen day those are pitches you stealing from playoff run
SORRY COFFEE ALMOST GONE, RULE 1 TEAM THAT WINS the trophy will be the team that starting 5 pitchers from spring training are most intact or with big market the bought themselves a shoot buy spending arm and leg ahhahh arm. rade deadline. We just as poor owner just look and dream thru the window at those pick ups that safe damaged starting staff. Rule 1a don't every trade starters if you have excess you idiot and havent seen tommie johns and you lose season and half duh. Rule 2 7,8,9 hitters are the difference BETWEEN PLAYOFF TEAM AND OTHER AND CHAMPS AND PLAYOFF TEAMS. you can't have three innings of shit out of nine, remember you get 27 outs and they will be 9 of them. that makes it a 6 inning game. THAT'S lets get a beer and take a piss time. lineups have to be balance top to bottom with dh. you have no excuse, we have kebryan and he should play everyday and game but that requires us to have 8 good 100 115 ops guys in lineup. That's on owners and nick to do their damn job, wE ALL know what you have to have now duh. rule three is you can be playoff teams small market if you spend on 4 and 5 pitcher that are better than the rest of league. Why first 4 and 5 end up 3 and 4 or 2 and 3 with injuries, we have 4 and 5 in nick and singer that are 2 and 3's big big advantage good job on that nick. SO RULE 4, playoff ball that we are playing is differenct it allows us to only show three reliefer not the other 5. You can't do that all season jeff and steve call it the b squad well call it the squad that cost us 6 games because they suck. They don't hold leads or keep us close, royals a medicore offense all the way to the dance with dominant bullpen they all threw like 100, why did they make it starters weren't pushed to do one more inning that like one more beer for the drunk at the bar that ends us with one more dui. duh. starters are pushed saving arm and confidence from that walk and dinger that cost them a win and club a game. those 5 bullpen arms that can't be trusted now hmmm maybe just maybe we shouldn't have had the glaring weakeness all season we can't have that we are big market we have to be equal to oppoenents and guys, Bullpen arms are cheap and we don't get it because nick does the old school baseball well this is how it's always been. NEW PITCHERS MOSTLY COLLEGE KIDS THEY AREN'T high schooler or 5 years in minors you have arms don gullet reliefer coming up closer, all new kids with arms like chase burn rhret should be nick martinez 6th starter and pen shut down pen guys those last 5 bullpen pieces on reds should n't be the fat kid at catcher or the worst fielder in right field little league, I don't have electric cheap controlable players not on big club, they should build confidence at big league level that who you are teaching them to pitch against. all have innings limits well boom fixed that , look at abbot whic problem is he worn out, why because he's good and we can't risk a close game to the b squad so he pitches one more inning tired and then we have to use stantian pagan ashcraft so they have to work more than they should and stantian played in more games than elly. BAD MANAGEMENT KRALL, YOU have abbot done worn out when his next start made be the different that has just been stupid and cheap. all the kids start in pen move up to starter emergency starter then third year have worked on secondary pitches have feet wet and dried at mlb level not bad habits pitchers get in dominanting triple aaa that's dumb have them down their. bad habits like me playing against my grandkids football hhheheh….we have the team if you wake up and smell the 90's I mean you're in the 90's. one last thing all the rules followed next year we have arms to use 1-8 in bullpen the cherry on top
THIS IS MY CRITQUE AND MANIFESTO, WE NEED BRETT ROOKER AND KYLE SWARBER, NICK 21 MILLION GONE AUSTIN HAYS BYE, SIGN SINGER KYLE WILL cost forty million for four years we have half that now without nick, HE wants to come home to ohio to finish his career he is dh only have will make him last. free agent we just have to write a check….We make playoff and he looks at hunter lodolo abbort chase burns and singer says wow only thing missing for trophy in hometown is me, has elly mister face of baseball for 4 years, tito manager young club. IF YOU DON'T sign check And spend the extra money when we will make playoff and will be in hunt with kyle. kyle 32 40 million four years we don't have anyone we're paying now or for four years that's the window, brett rooker what 40 dingers but he's 31 outfielder no austin hayes no benson no steer in outfield marte tj him. but why rooker the a's are cheap they have 3 years before a vegas stadium is build he's will be 35 and pricey by then he' isn't in their plans what they want is young player arroyo chase petty with sal looking like keeper one more of the infielders in 3 for one, shit and paid him 20 million for three years. so that 40 million more we need and chase petty arroyo and one other top pros we have club for four years till elly leave and kyle and rooker contracts done, reload with trading elly in hersall walker trade.
so tj, mclain elly kyle rooker steer marte tyler and kebryan . balance left and right and a club that will lead in homeruns this is gabp, kebryan is 15 dinger guy. we have everything we need for 40 million if ownership doesn't pony up to win the trophy we need them to sell some of the team to rich dude that wants some good p.r., tell me any team is better than that with two pick ups. again both dudes one money we have and one team that is three years away from new abllpark and splash with guy they are wasting money paying because they aren't winning in three years they are sucking. 3 for one, rooker,
so we have window of 6 top of the rotation pitchers, we have ability to have 1-8 in bullpen that 5 can't be trusted in playoff games but are young great arms learning making money and getting major leagues experience and coaching. again chase burns as six starter and rhrett seventh . Singer is stud, sign him zac don't know. aLL THE arms are their we just have to use them in way that isn't the normal way, we don't money to play that game, lets teach them in minor for 3 years so they can blow their older worn out miles on arm the first year in major, innings limit duh, the bullpen you get paid you can work on pitche and only use your best two build confidence and not have to buy scarp off the gutter. the minor league arms starter play in major because they throw max effort and seen once a season by hitter and only have to use two pitches duh. no brainer by mlb and baseball are afraid to win by doing something that is differenct. Reds you want to save money we have 5 bullpen guys we can't trust in big game but we're paying millions for them dud if they arent trusted and we don't expect them to win you don't have to pay that money you can use rookie with potential and future and the money you safe in throw away games you spend on kyle and rooker wht we spend 12 million on guys that are end of the benchers we can lose for less money ahahhahd and the kids we can win with they have electric stuff. we'll win 4 more games and they have stud in lineup . pressue nick and owners to do this this they will make more money deep in playoff and season tickets, they get kyle and a rooker type behind in I'm buying season tickets you not going to come down and watche them THEY ARE ON NATIONAL T.V. WITH THAT TEAM MORE MONEY FOR OWNER WINNING making you money hop make you money excitement makes you money. CASTO WHATEVER'S AND NICK if you don't see we're the two players short of trophy shot, you need to get out the resume of for sale sign. FANS DEMAND IT PUT UP OR SHUT UP
