Thanks for being with us. I’m Jay Zawoski. That’s Greg Boyison. Mario’s at the United Center that way. Stephen is here. Stephen, I’m back. We had the whole game back together. We had to give him several sacks of cash to show up tonight. The red carpet’s rolled out. We were feeding him grapes and fanning him. Yeah. During the intermission, don’t forget the wine. The wine, of course. Steven is all about the cake. All about the cake. cake. I want my cake and I want to eat it, too. He He likes baked goods, too. Well, it’s good to have you back, Stephen. Uh, we won’t keep you. You know, I know it’s a onetime thing. Well, keep in mind this is You’re getting paid. I’m getting paid per minute, so talk faster. Come on. You’ve got me and Stephen on the same night. Like, yeah, this is getting expensive. This is Yeah. Well, that too. Uh, it’s uh all this talent wasted for on such a meaningless garbage game. Yeah. Boy. Oh, boy. Yeah. if you uh missed it. And wow, who could blame you, the Rockford Ice Hawks lose 4 nothing to the Blues. Uh I will say the first period was pretty competitive. They hung in there. I I’m not, you know, there’s nothing to there’s really very little time we need to spend talking about this game, but okay, here’s what I’ll say. there was a sliver of an opportunity for guys like Kevin Kchinsky, Lucas Reichel, Ryan Green, Oliver Moore, uh Ethan Delastro to make their final bids to make the roster. And I didn’t see enough from real I guess Ryan Green had a pretty decent game, but I didn’t see much from any of them that makes me feel like any minds were changed tonight based on the way they played. I I was really hoping and what could have been Lucas Reichel’s last game probably was Lucas Reichel’s last game as a Blackhawk that he would have flashed something. Well, he had one play in the first period. Can you remind me about it? Oh, well, there was a play we all kind of like, oh, where he uh he got pushed off the puck and then he stole it back and fell Sam Laughy. That’s right. And then I don’t remember if he got on the ice again after that. There wasn’t much. I mean, that was typical Lucas Riel makes a really good player early where you’re like, “All right, yeah, we’re going to get a good Rielle game and then you’re still waiting.” Um, at least he got to wear the A on his jersey for his last That was cool. That was cool. I, you know, and look, in fairness, when your best players are Ryan Green, Oliver Moore, and Lucas Reichel against the pretty much, I’d say 90% of that roster was the Blues NHL roster. Two-thirds at least, right? There might be a few guys here or there that that play down or whatever, but um you can’t expect second tier NHL players to suddenly become star players and and take it to him. But I thought the first period was good. They hung in there. Arvid Serblum did the best he could under the circumstances. I didn’t like that. Was it the fourth one where he just sort of lost it at his feet and couldn’t find the puck. There were a few moments in this game where he had no idea where the puck was. um the Luchich goal because Luchich’s massive ass was right in his face, but I was told Spencer Knight needs to be better at tracking the puck. I’ve heard a lot of stuff. I’ve heard a lot of stuff, but yeah, I mean there wasn’t a lot of help in front of him. A lot of guys standing around. A lot of guys Yeah. over skating their position. Yeah, the Luch goal was uh a old school Luchi goal. I mean, he pushed Nolan Allen out of the way from behind and then I think that was a if that was a goal in a regular season game, the Hawks would have challenged for goalie interference. Yeah. But in in a game like this, you’re like, who cares? Let’s just get the hell out of here. Um, but yeah, I mean, it’s just I wish there was something we really could like break down, but it’s just whatever. It It’s It was a meaningless game. Nobody got hurt. That’s Well, that’s not true. Nobody got Leonard Slagger left the game after one shift in the third period. It looks like he might have reagravated his little hip or whatever he was dealing with earlier. Hopefully, it’s nothing too serious, but I mean, that’s what you worry about in a game like this is, you know, you don’t want a Sammy Savo type injury from a couple years ago where a guy ends his season in a game that doesn’t matter. Yes, Slagger left, but it certainly doesn’t appear anything serious. Maybe he misses the first couple games of the year. Uh, but listen, uh, what’s been going on in Sweden and Russia the last couple days with, you know, Fondell and Ciro is is way more important than anything we saw tonight. Yeah, definitely. Uh, also Sasha Ba scored his first goal for the Boston Terriers today. So, good news off the NHL ice. But look, there’s there’s no point to try to dissect and analyze this whole thing. It was it was the expected outcome. It was the expected outcome. And for those of you that go that use um hockey stat cards to look at like the the fancy blue lines after the game, you’re familiar with their graphic where it lists in order when it’s not the blue line when it’s the game score card or it lists in order the top performers. So, usually you see like the team that won will have like three or four of the top seven players and it’s all scattered. Today’s chart is the Blu’s roster and then the Blackhawks roster. There is not a single Blackhawk that had a better game than a single St. Louis Blue. Sounds about right. Yes. That’s not one of those where I look at it and debate. I I I agree. I was like, did they sort it differently for this game? No. Yeah. Game the lowest game score. extra points in the game score for playing in the NHL previously. That might that might have skewed it a little bit. The lowest game score for the Blues was Colton Ellis who played goal in the third period for the Blues. Delore D’vorski had a.72 game score. That’s the guy who played the whole game for the Blues. The highest rated Hawk was Louie Krevier. The only positive with a 13 game score. Everyone else from there is sub zero subzero wins. Um everyone is a minus. So, it is all the blues, then all the Hawks. I’ve never seen that again. I hope to never see it again unless it is the Blackhawks on top. Yes. All right, let’s present our game pucks for this one. Uh, we have three nominees somehow. Uh, I actually forgot who I took. Oh, yeah. Uh, Nolan Allen was taken by Mario. Uh, I took Sam Laferdy cuz sure he hit some people occasionally. And you had Ryan Green. I agree. Yes, cuz he took 25 faceoffs and won 14 of them. Okay, that’s a stat. That’s pretty good. Uh, we should talk about Laferdy a little bit, too. Um, I know I picked him as my guy, but I basically just picked a name out of a hat. Um, as much as we don’t want to rush kids onto the roster, I also don’t think we should just be handing veteran spots simply because they’re veterans. And you and I talked about this last night. If Sam Lafford is not killing penalties and he’s not effective physically, what is it you say you do here? Yeah, as as I said that last night when Laferdy did not play any short-handed minutes at all. Um, so yeah, I don’t know exactly what the deal is here. Um, but after a night like tonight, you know, Oliver Moore needs some Rockfording. Yeah, he does. Uh, Ryan Green probably needs some Rockfording. So, you know, if he’s just here until one of those guys, you know, pulls a Frank Nazar and says, “Hey, I the HL is not for me anymore. I need something more. No pun intended. Uh then you know Sam Laferty is a guy you can sit. Sam Lafery is a guy you could place on waiverss and if someone takes him Oh no. Um so uh I don’t know. Again, it’s preseason. Um look like we’re going to hear from Sam Laughaferty. I’m sure it was like the only reason I want to keep Sam Laferdy besides if they put him on the PK and I think they eventually will because I we said it last night too. I can’t see them keeping Nick Felino on the PK all year long. It just seems like a lot of work. That’s a lot to ask for your 38-year-old captain who, you know, is in tremendous shape. There’s no doubt about that. But an 82 game season is a long time. So, but the only other reason I think to keep them is so we could get those uh laugh with Laughery Dad joke video segments that they did a couple years ago. Um that entertains me. I don’t really care about anything else. I just want to be entertained while I’m sitting there uh trying to make sure the gummy bears are okay. Yes. No Mark Bersan sightings this year, so we’re good. As far as preseason, though, he he’ll be around, I’m sure. All right. Do you want to hear from Sam Laughaferty? Let’s hear from Sam Laughy. We spoke after the game today. Two less minutes we have to talk about this game. There he goes. See what he had to say before, but everybody’s Jack Kashel. And then just how would you sum up training camp for you with him systems and everything? Yeah, it was uh it was a good camp. It was a lot of uh you know systems we’re putting in place um like you said, but I think the big thing comes down to uh you know hard work and just supporting each other all over the ice and thought we did that and thought we progressed as a camp along. overall I think really positive and um but we just got to keep building. What was tonight like as one of the only veterans in the lineup? Um yeah, I mean I thought we battled hard in the first and um yeah, like our game and kind of got away from us in the second a little bit, but I thought we uh you know, we stayed with it. Didn’t obviously score a night, but battled to the very end and I think um you know, it’s a positive we can take away from it. How much has the overall roster construction in the organization changed since the last time you were here? A good amount. Yeah, I think there’s maybe six guys that were were here last time I was here. And um so nice to have some familiar faces, but um you know, a lot of young elite still and um makes it exciting. I think we got a lot of building blocks. We just got to you know, keep getting a little bit better every day and um yeah, the results will take care of themselves. Lash has talked about this team throughout the preseason starting to feel a little bit more natural with the system. You get that sense as well now getting through six preseason games. Yeah, absolutely. I think at first you’re thinking a little bit and we want to get to a point where we’re not thinking. It’s just natural and automatic and helps you play faster. You know, you can know what all the other guys are going to do and um yeah, I think it’s just one of those things. Um it’s never going to be perfect, but we just got to keep chipping away, keep getting a little bit better um every single day, whether it’s, you know, practice or a game. There’s a lot of things we can learn and take away. How do you feel about your game at this point and where are you standing coming into the season? I feel good. Ready to go. Um, super excited and um, yeah, just want to bring everything I can to the table every single night and um, yeah, just super excited to get going. Sam, we are all excited to get going with the regular season as much as we love when the preseason comes around cuz it’s like actual hockey to talk about. And I’ll say like the first part of it was interesting because you got, you know, first looks at Lardis and you saw how some of the young guys had had developed over the year. You saw the jump a dart has clearly made uh over the summer, but like the last two, three games. You’re like, “All right, last night was okay. I mean, last night felt fun. Last night felt like a real game. I was I’m just ready though.” Oh, absolutely. I’m ready for it to count. No, it’s the same thing every year. And by the way, it sounds like they were building a house in the in the locker room tonight. still constructing. Please stop with the damn hammering. Back to movie quotes. Um, yeah, this happens every year. We get super excited because the summer sucks. There’s no hockey. We get bored. We We’re dying for something new to talk about. Uh, and then rookie camp comes and we’re excited because a lot of times it’s the first time we get to see some of these prospects in person. and then the start of training camp and then by like day three after training camp, you’re just like, “Oh my god, I don’t want to do this anymore. Let’s get to the season.” Uh, we’re gonna get to the season Tuesday. I don’t know if the Florida Panthers are going to have anybody left. Um, they they are just them and the Lightning. We got to get to that, too. Are doing some things, which is silly to me, but okay. Um, but yeah, let’s get it started already. I mean, Tuesday should be fun. Um, you know, no one’s giving the Blackhawks a chance in that game, but you never know what happens. And and the good news is it starts at 4:00, so win or lose, it’ll be over at 7:00. That’s right. All right. Uh, we are going to talk more about this game and the Hawks roster construction when Mario joins us in a little bit. Uh, we’re going to hit the break zone for the first time. And it’s a shame. It’s a little bit ridiculous that you find uh more sparkling water in kombucha than you find real cola. Well, guess what? RC Cola, they’ve been around since 1905. Have not changed their formula. Have not changed their ways because it’s already perfect. It’s exactly what you want. Nothing goes better with a Chicago tavern style pizza like RC. If you walk into a pizza place in Chicago, when you see an RC machine, you know you’re at the right spot. Soda used to have some kick. Now it’s all about the easy fizz and the pretty colors. No. RC Cola is an OG cola in a world of spineless soft drinks. It’s the same bold, crisp flavor it’s always been. RC Cola tastes like a punch in the thirst. So, do yourself a favor, grab some at your local store for Sunday’s football games or whatever you got going on. RC is the move for whatever it is you’re doing. Let’s talk about some of the stuff going on off the NHL ice for now. Uh I mentioned Sasha Bava getting his first goal with Boston today. Um what you like to see is it wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t a Michigan goal, but it was Sasha Bu going to the net and cleaning up the garbage. That’s what you drafted him to be a power forward center and that’s how he scored his first goal with Boston. So that’s good. But Roman Canerov and uh Anton Fondell have been lighting it up. Fondell five goals in his last two games. Yes. Including a Michigan goal. Um second youngest player in Swedish Hockey League history to net a hat-tick. Really? Yeah. That’s pretty good in league history. What I have found interesting too is he had started at center for the first few games. Then they moved into wing. He was third line center. last two games he moved to wing on the second line and he’s got five goals with our old pal Marcus Krueger as his center. Yeah. And it doesn’t look like if you see the highlights and we share them a lot on our Twitter account cho blackhawks. A lot of them are like of the impressive variety. Obviously a Michigan goal is great. Not sure what the goalie was doing there, but it was still a Michigan goal. To me that second goal was more impressive. That absolute rocket from the slot was far more impressive than the Michigan. And that’s that’s one of the when you look at the attributes of of uh Anton Fondell, the shot is one of the things that gets the most attention from him. And to imagine if he is indeed a winger uh him and Bard together with those two shots, it’s going to be lethal. And I don’t think that there’s any it’s not a 0% chance that he plays for the Hawks this year. He probably will. Remember, Jeren gets Jer Gardens. I had to say it that way cuz the chat likes it. um they were relegated last year. They came back up to the SHL. So obviously not expected to be one of the great deep run playoff teams. And even if they make it all the way to the SHL championships, it’s that’s still like end of March. They don’t Yeah, cuz their playoffs begin in early March. They they might even begin in February. And they’re they don’t have it’s not like a 16 team tournament, right? So they don’t drag it out for TV and all that stuff there. So, like even if they win the SHL championship, which it probably isn’t going to happen, you’re still talking late March, so he could still come here for the last two weeks of the season, right? And uh you saw Ryan Green also from uh Boston join for what he play two games. Yeah, the last two. Yeah, the last two. That could happen with B if they want because you know cuz you know Boston’s going to make it to the They always They always go They always since Jay Pandalf take over, they’ve never not gone to the Frozen 4. Yeah. So, they’re going to go long and I you’re not rooting against Boston, but if you want to see Sasha Bair play for Chicago, you probably don’t want him to go all the way. You want him to get a little bit of a earlier exit than than the championship. But there’s just, you know, I I I think when you read a, you know, some of the season previews written by non Chicago people or you just kind of see what other NHL fans are saying about the Hawks, it’s like, oh, another hopeless year. Whenever I hear that, it’s just like, well, you’re not paying attention. You’re not doing your job. You’re not noticing what’s happening under the surface. Because, as uh our buddy Chris Peters said, like Conor Bernard takes a year off the back of the rebuild, not the front. He was kind of the first piece of the rebuild that came and played in the NHL. Him and Kchinsky, you would say, right? And then now you’re starting to fill in your Nazar here and just signed a big deal and looks really good and first year Renzel and Lefto. So now you’re finally starting to get these pieces to fill in. You could add Bondell this year. Who knows who they draft in this year’s draft. If they are indeed one of the worst teams, they could be Gavin McKenna. Maybe, maybe, maybe not. But it’s going to be another top prospect. Yep. I mean, it’s likely going to be at least another top five pick. Um, you know, and then Canv uh could be here next year, should be here next year. It’s the last year of his KH L. And I love that kid. I’m so excited for him. At first, I was like, “Oh man, another 5 foot n 510 forward. What do we need another one of those for?” When you watch his goals, every single one of his goals is from the front of the net. Yeah, that kid might be smallish, but he’s a bowling ball out there. He’s not afraid to get to the dirty areas of ice. He’s not afraid to pay the price to to finish a play. I think he is exactly what the Blackhawks need that Blackhawk fans are just going to fall in love with that kid. He’s going to be like the hero of the 300 level. You’re going to see a ton of his jerseys. Um I I he exciting prospect. I mean just think of what that rook you know the Blackhawks get to host to Tom Kerver’s showcase next year. They’re just going to throttle the Blues in the wild. You thought that team they took up the Minnesota was good this year? Oh yeah. Next year will include Bondell Casov. Yep. uh whoever they draft this year most likely unless it’s a college player, right? Um you know, Lardis will be a part of that likely all these other guys, you know, um you know, should be a lot of fun. Well, I mean, I’ve even seen like Martin Mizak is a guy who I can’t really figure out what his trajectory is. He’s got there’s something there. He’s fast as hell. He can skate and he he’s got size. He has demonstrated like I I’ve been watching him kind of carefully in camp because I’m trying to figure out what to make of him and what to expect from him. You never see him written about by the prospects people. He’s never mentioned in the like long-term projection of guys who could be. But like when you watch him play, he’s got a lot of the skills that that you that this team I mean speed hands. I think what he has to learn is as our we say it all the time what Derrick King says coach the junior out of him a little bit. A lot of that tonight. A lot of it. A lot of blind passes into the middle of the ice. A lot of trying to hit the guy on the other end of the boards where there’s four sticks in the way. Yeah. But uh he there’s something there. I mean, I don’t know. I’m not going to make a declaration that he’s a future NHL player, let alone an all-star, but you could see the raw talent there. Yeah. Every time he was on the ice tonight, you were like, “Oh, there’s Mizak again.” because he’s just got he just has a half a step on everybody. Um so once he figures out how to play the pro game, you know, he could be something, you know, it could be one of those bottom six guys that that, you know, scores a big goal for you every once in a while. He could be, you know, uh a future McKayv type player. Um who knows? But you could see what the scouting staff saw two years ago when they drafted him. There’s definitely some potential there. What that amounts to, we’ll just have to wait and see. But he’ll be he’ll be fun to watch in Rockford. Rockford is going to be a ton of fun this year. I got to chat for a couple minutes tonight with Ice Hawk’s general manager, Mark Bernard. Always a pleasure. One of my favorite people in all of hockey. Um, got to get him in here just to tell stories. He’s But most most of the stories he tells us, he can’t say here. Can’t we keep the names out of it and just say this one time in minor league hockey? This one time in hockey camp. Yeah. Uh the stories he tells are awesome and they’re not all of the slapshot variety, right? But he uh he you know talked a little bit about what the guys are going to have down there this year and you know talked a little bit about Lucas Riel. I’m sure we’ll get into that a little later. Um, you know, and you know, he’s high on um Breoi, the the uh the new goalie. Breoi looked really good in camp. Well, he had he uh had uh 17 saves last night in the uh preseason win over Milwaukee, stopped all went 17 for 17. Um just a big kid, but he’s high on him. And he told me, “Watch out for Paul Lewinsky this year.” Okay. He thinks that that’s been a slower developing process, but he he thinks that Paul Lewinsky is a guy that’s kind of finally getting what he has to do to advance in the pro level. We’ve talked about a lot with young players, embracing new roles. Yeah. He kind of, I think, has figured out he’s never going to be a top six guy. Probably not ever be a top nine guy. Yeah. And go with it. Well, you can play. You can do it. you know, somebody to watch out for. Lots of exciting things to do or watch out for in Rockford. I mean, still, you know, AJ Spellellacy, too, is is like he’ll be part of things soon. You probably might see him at the end of the year, too. Um, you know, uh, Jack Pridum is off to a hot start. Yeah, Vaner has four points in his first two games. I think Pritam has four points in his first three games. So, uh, good stuff coming. Look, and not all these guys are going to be NHL players. Not all of them are going to be stars. Not all of them will even play for the Blackhawks because there’s only so many roster spots. But when you start to play, you know, uh, put the puzzle pieces together for the Hawks roster in a few years, you’ve got a bunch you feel good about already that you can pretty much, I mean, Bardinar, check NHL players. You feel pretty confident that in short order Oliver Moore is going to be an NHL player. Nick Lardis scored 71 goals last year. Hasn’t looked completely lost at the NHL level in pre in preseason games, but certainly needs some time. Ryan Green has held his own at this level. Spely almost made the team last year out of camp, right? Like there’s just as you start to go down the list like there’s almost too many. Well, that’s a good thing. It is. It is. You need more than one prospect. You need more. Like for years, the Blackhawks, Rockford was just an afterthought. It was where you tried to stash salary cap hits, right? And you brought in veterans. And if you squint really hard, maybe Jer Jeremy Morren will be a or Dylan Olsen will be an NHL player or or Brendan Perry. Dylan Olsson the one that was called up the same day as Andrew Shaw maybe and everyone’s like well Dylan Olsson’s a high prospect and then this Andrew Shaw guys he’s a fourth line don’t worry about him he’ll only be here for a handful of games and it was a complete that might have been yeah and then Dylan Olsson got traded for uh to bring back Chris so you know win-win winowski 5 says yeah Kaiser Renzel Levinov you could check all those boxes you’ve already got Alex Vic here so there’s four defenseman You feel like one of Allen or Delmastro will pop or Kchinsky will pop? Like it’s just things are going in the right direction. Yeah. I mean, I think all these these last two, three, four years, you know, all these young kids were just names we talked about on this show or or or highlight videos you saw on YouTube or statistics you read on elite prospects. And now we’re actually seeing them here or seeing them in Rockford and you’re getting a a good idea of what they can actually do. And that’s exciting um that like we still don’t know if this is all going to work out, if this is going to be built into a championship contender team or at least a playoff team. But, you know, I think it’s safe to say that it feels better here than in year three of say Detroit, year three of Buffalo, year three of Ottawa. I think it’s safe to say that it’s probably a little more optimistic here just based on the amount of prospects. And that’s that’s Kyle that’s been Kyle Davidson’s philosophy is get as many first round picks. There’s much more value in picking a guy 28th than picking a guy at 38. Yes. Buy more lottery tickets. Better chance of winning the lottery. All right. Mario is standing by from United Center. We have updates on Landon Slagert and some other things. So stick around 2 minutes. Uh, we had a $2 one from Corey says, “Let’s talk about Fondell’s hat-tick.” We did that. Thank you, Corey. And Captain Cormick says, “Thank you all for showing us patience with this process. As much as I’d like to see the Hawks win, the prospects looking good is more important.” Thank you, Captain Cormick, for that $5 super chat. All right, Mario. Uh, you just heard from Jeff Flashel. I see we have updates on Landon Slackard and some other things. What can you tell us? So, Landon Slagger is considered uh day-to-day by Jeff Blashel. Uh so that they’ll probably get a better understanding of where he’s at tomorrow. Um now, if you’ll remember, he missed some time through the preseason and training camp with uh what he described as like a muscle strain. Um I think it was somewhere in his hip or abdomen area. Uh and then also was sick. But so the last shift that he took, it was kind of the end of it was just like a bit of an awkward collision. Um didn’t seem too uh serious, but he was grimacing and then didn’t play the rest of the game. So possibly precautionary, but um hopefully it’s it’s that’s all it is. Uh, Alex Vlic is gonna go on the trip to Florida, which uh the team leaves tomorrow. So, uh hopefully he’s able to be uh healed up from the skate cut and uh is able to get into the game on Tuesday, but at least good indication that he’s uh progressed enough that he’s going to go on the trip. The fact that the Blackhawks are leaving tomorrow uh gives me the idea that we’ll know who the NHL roster is tomorrow, a little bit earlier than the um deadline to to get that that finalized, which means we’ll get some answers on guys like Ethan Delro, Nolan Allen, Lucas Reichel, Matt Grizzlick. Um there’s a lot of up in the air right now, but I think by tomorrow we’ll get uh we’ll probably get those answers. Well, I know Jeff Blancho has sort of warned that he’s not going to tip his hand on uh rosters for games and starting goalenders and stuff like that. Um but any sort of indication on what the plan might be with Grizzlick? Uh he was asked he was asked about uh Matt Grizzlick. He was asked uh by yours truly about Nolan Allen and uh he spoke a little bit about how their preseasons went and um didn’t really give much info, but here is uh Blashel if you got the clip ready there, Stephen, on Nolan Allen and Matt Grizzlick. I think he’s played better as the preseason’s gone along. You know, he does bring a physical uh edge to him for sure. Um you know, I think the first two games he played, he was on his off side. these games he’s been on the left. I think it’s a little more comfortable on the left side there, you know. Um but uh yeah, I think he’s gotten better. Has there been a decision on Grizzlick yet? Um we’ll know more, you know, tomorrow. We’re still kind of waiting through some stuff here. So, is this a night when somebody can you like that answer? My question. That’s I’m not going to say Can you say that out loud or So, there you go. Yes. Well, let’s talk about Grizzlick a little bit. Um I saw I think it was Ben Pope tweeting about it and you know he’s definitely not the sexiest name to bring in. Um Ben kind of brought the point of like if you want your actually I think it was a prospect on was talking to uh Ben Pope about this. Anthony was talking to Ben about it and said if you want your an extra defenseman wouldn’t you want someone a little more defensively reliable? But you’ve got Luis Crevier who feels that’s like his spot is that seventh spot. But if you really feel like Cinsky is not ready and tonight he did not look like it. Del Mastro has been struggling. You feel pretty good about Nolan Allen. But if you got another injury, let’s say, you know, against Florida, someone twists a knee and is out dayto day. Then you’re forced to bring Gorchinsky or or Delasro up and they’re not ready, assuming Allen’s one that makes it. Um maybe Grizzl has a decent insurance policy here. I don’t know where you guys are at on that. Uh well, I mean, that’s the whole reason he was brought in. Yeah. Uh I think he’s going to be on the team. I think they’re going to give him a contract at this point because you’ve already got Velasic a little dinged up. Yeah. He’s going to make the trip, but uh you know, Conor Murphy is not going to he’s going to miss some time. Nobody here and nobody in the Blackhawks front office believes he’s an 82 game defenseman right now. Yeah. Um, you know, if Corkinsky was ready, if Dastro looked great this preseason, then it was it’d be an easy no. But those guys are going back to Rockford. So, if it was up to if I had to place money on it, I would think Grizzlick and Krevier are the guys that get on the plane to go to Florida tomorrow. And just because if you have Allen make the team and then Allen sits every other game, that’s more detrimental to him than say Lu Krevier sitting every one every three games or every other game because Nolan Allen could still, you know, use some big minutes in Rockford. Uh where Louis Creier, he kind of is what he is. Um no one’s going to be screaming you’re screwing with Louis Creier’s development if he misses three or four games in a row. Uh he’s a steady large defenseman, good skater. I liked what I saw out of both him and Allen tonight early were were not shy about shooting the puck. I like that. So I think Grizzlick and Creier make the most sense for uh your sixth, seventh defenseman to start the season because there you go. Uh you can uh you know play the matchups. You can if you if you want a little more offense back there, you book Grizzlig out there. If you need a bigger guy, a bigger body, say against the Florida Panther, Boston Brun team to start the season, then you put Crevier out there. So, you’re saying Ellen Kchinsky and El Master go to Rockford? Yeah. Interesting. Mario, I mean, if you if you don’t think any of those three are able to play in the NHL, then sure, you you you take Matt Grizzlick. Um, I I’ve I feel like Matt Grizzlick as an insurance policy through training camp I think was a good idea. I think you could play Nolan Allen and be comfortable with it. Um, and have him in that and have him in that rotation. I think if you if you sign Matt Grizzlick to a contract as an insurance policy and then you you see one of those guys from Rockford be undeniably ready to be in the NHL, then then you’re kind of doing a disservice to Matt Grizzlick. And sure, do Blackhawks fans really care about what happens to Matt Grizzlick? Probably not. But the organization doesn’t, I’m sure, doesn’t want to bring a guy in and sign him and then we’re at the end of October or November or something. And it’s just like what can we do to get rid of this guy? I I I just I I don’t know if that would be the right direction to go. But as far as an NHL lineup, if you are saying that Korchinsky, Del Mastro, and Allen are all going to Rockford, then yeah. um then you’re then then I think you’re you’re bringing him back Grizzlick. And I I think if you’re doing that, you’re probably you’re probably doing him a favor by giving him that contract and saying like you’re going to be in the NHL for some time. So if that’s if that’s the path that they want to go, fine. But just understand that you’re you’re sending down three guys that at least one of them to me through the preseason showed that they could play in the NHL. So the I guess the question and I’m I can see both. I could see either either way. I’m not if they sign Grizzlick, I’m not going to be upset about it. If they keep Nolan Allen, I’m not going to be upset about it. I’m asking myself though, is Noah Allen ready or was he the least the least ineffective of the three, right? Like, was he just the one that looked the least bad? That’s probably a little more common. No, actually, let me let me change that a little bit cuz I don’t think he looked bad. No, at all. I just don’t think he was like, “Oh, yeah. Look, no Allen is ready, ready, ready. Check that box. He’s a guy. He’s here for sure.” And like Mario, to your point with Grizzl, I see what you’re saying, but at the same time, like they’re the team that gave him a PTO, they’re going to give him a contract. And if something happens in Rockford where CCH or EDM or Allen like are lightening up and you got to call him up, then you wave Grizzlick and he either gets claimed by an NHL team or he gets to keep that salary and play in Rockford, which I’m sure he doesn’t isn’t thrilled about. But you know, he’s you’re still playing the game. He’s smart enough. He knows. And they’re going to tell him, listen, if you could tell TJ Brody to take a hike for the last 30 games of a season, a defenseman that’s was is far more respected in the league than Matt Grizzlick, I’m pretty sure they’ll have that conversation if they give him the contract saying, “You realize the situation you’re in.” And I’m sure he knows. He wouldn’t have signed the PTO here in the first place. So, he’s a smart dude. Yeah. I mean, they could I would think if he comes out and he plays decent, they could probably find a landing spot for him if there’s a guy in Rockford that is just And listen, I hope that happens. I if they sign him, I hope in six weeks, two months, we’re like, we got to get this guy out of here because there are two guys that are better than him right now. Remember Matt? Remember Matt Grizzlick? We’ll be having our our end of season wrap-up conversation, but remember Oh, yeah. Matt Grizzlick was on this team. Yes. Was it LC YK or L Y C? Oh my god. If he makes a team, I’m going to have to spend I’m going to have my wife make me flash cards on how to spend it. Every time I’m like GRC, I can’t I for whatever reason, I can’t figure it out. But um insurance policy and I do think he does have the understanding of look man, this is temporary. either you’re here only for the preseason or we sign you and you’re only here until some kid steps up and it’s like is undeniable. And the other thing too, I don’t think it necessarily will come down to just waiverss, you know what I mean? I think that some team some team is going to experience a massive injury. Some guys, yeah, a team like Aaron Ekboy had left for the We should get into that a little bit too. Aaron Ekboy had left the game for the Panthers tonight. some team is going to lose three or their six defenseman in the first two months of the season and be like, “Yes, we need a live body.” I mean, remember what happened to the Blackhawks just a couple years ago when we had to get uh Remington Pitlick and and Jacob Meghna off in the course of three days. Yeah. They were like, “Hey, who’s playing in Rosemont that we could steal right now? Bring pack your bag.” Like that happens. So, I don’t think, you know, signing Grizzlick for the rest of this season is any way like way like he’s cemented here in Chicago, right? And we’ve seen Kyle Davidson. Yes, the organization definitely wants to do right by guys, especially veterans, but you also see Kyle Davidson not really care about optics and make hard decisions and trading or or or cutting Matt Grizzlick. I wouldn’t file under hard decision. Not if you’ve got a guy ready to be in the NHL. I I if I’m gonna if I’m anticipating I am anticipating he is on the plane to Florida tomorrow. That would be my guess. Yeah. I that it just it makes a lot of sense and it’s it’s a lowrisk midreward kind of move. It’s not going to hurt you. No. Well, you hope you hope. Uh, I know you asked and the way we started the show today, Mario, is basically like we did not expect the Hawks to win this game, but they also had some young guys with an opportunity to make their final case to Jeff Washel and Kyle Davidson about maybe reearning a spot on the team. And we sort of had a consensus that no one more Riel, Kchinsky, Delmro, or Green really had the kind of game that’s going to change anyone’s mind. Yeah, I Yeah, I I think that coming out of this game, you didn’t you didn’t get anybody that made a massive um change. I would say to me um I would if if you’re making a decision off of six preseason games um and taking any you know transactions or trades or anything out of it um I’m I’m keeping Riel on the team and I’m keeping Nolan Allen on the team. I think those guys played well enough throughout the preseason for me that that they’re on there. Now is is Reichel in the starting lineup? No. I I have him as like the 13th forward. It’s not an ideal situation for him. Um but being in the NHL is probably better than going to Rockford. And if you’re not trading him before the rosters are the roster uh deadline on Monday, then keep him around. Um you’re not going to be worse for wear. I think out of the three left side defenseman that were battling for a roster spot, uh Nolan Allen was the better of the three. Um, but Ryan Green, Oliver Moore, um, I think as fun as it would be to have them on this team and and makes the team, you know, interesting based off of seeing young guys play, um, they’re going to be better served to at least start the season in Rockford, playing about 18 minutes a night, playing in the top six. That’s going to better serve them than playing bottom six in the NHL, even though it would be more fun to watch them in the NHL and grow. uh Del Mastro played himself out of an NHL spot uh throughout this preseason and Kevin Kinsky um tonight uh and we should play the clip um from from Jeff Blashel. kind of talked about this idea of this game and and kind of who could or could not make an impact um and a kind of a last impression. But uh why don’t we play that and then I want to finish my thought on Kevin Cchinsky. So this is what Blashel said about tonight’s game and and kind of the stakes that were um that were there for some of the young players. This was a night that I would say um that we had a lot of young guys in and they were going up against a team, you know, again, a roster of a lot of guys that played in the playoffs last year. So, a good roster and yet a chance to kind of say, uh, you know, I can help our our Blackhawk team win, you know. So, like the answer, the short answer is yes. Um it it’s not easy when when you’re in in the the kind of uh the situation we’re in tonight, but the short answer is yes. And the question was to could a a young player earn a job um with a with a with a good performance tonight. And Kevin Cinsky was was sent down to Rockford uh earlier than I think a lot of people might have expected. Um, and but this was still an opportunity for him to kind of come up and and as Blashel said, like show that you could make an impact for the NHL team. And I don’t know what it was, but he looked uh uninterested in taking advantage of that opportunity. um watching him tonight like I was I was like I was getting upset at Kchinsky cuz it cuz knowing kind of the opportunity that’s in front of you as the last preseason game what you’re trying to show the the the effort you’re trying to have and there were a lot of just bad reads too many turnovers and there were a number of times where it looked like he he was drifting and floating and not really not really engaged in in a way that show like to me seemed like a guy that was like trying to take grasp of of a of an opportunity in front of him. Even if it feels like yeah, you’re you’re unlikely to change many minds, you still are on the ice. you still can can put something out there and finish the preseason uh on a good foot and give yourself a chance, especially knowing that Ethan Delmro didn’t have a good preseason and Nolan Allen had an okay preseason. If you go out and and you have a solid final game, like that can give you a step up. And I don’t know, just there just seemed something in his game tonight where it was just like he just was not all there. Yeah, I I’m kind of glad you said it first because today’s game for Cchinsky was a bit of of red flag for me. Um I did not see a lot of compete from him. I have here in my game notes, uh this is right between the Blues first and second goals. Kchinsky just giving up pucks without a fight in front of Solder Bloom. Then mid shift, I saw him bent over with his sticks on his knees as the play is happening as if he’s trying to catch his breath. Like that is concerning that if the conditioning is so poor. Look, maybe he was trying to like shove his pants down or like it was an equipment issue. Maybe like trying to fix the knee pads with the sticks. He had to fart. But he’s trying to squeeze a fart out. Too much kombucha. Um maybe. So I don’t want to make too much out of a 3se secondond isolated thing that I saw. But there’s no fight there. And look, you let’s rewind to his rookie year where Luke Richardson said, “Today’s practices, we beat the hell out of Kevin Cchinsky and try to toughen him up.” And I know they threw some younger other guys into that mix, too, but Nick Felino was told, “You are going to kick his ass for the next 60 minutes.” And that’s what that practice was, was trying to make Kchinsky tough. Yeah. Tonight was disappointing because, you know, I covered the entire Icehogs Milwaukee series last year and I was actually really encouraged by what Kevin Kinsky did in that series. He was not shying away from the contact. He was he was initiating contact. He was getting in the in the post whistle shenanigans and he looked confident and he looked good. And that guy had never showed up to training camp this year. I don’t know what happened between end of April and and midepptember, but it’s not the same guy that I got super encouraged about what I saw. Um, definitely not, you know, giving up any kind of of of hope on Kchinski. Get him back to Rockford, you know, get his confidence back up. I still think he’s going to be a very good player at some point. Uh but it’s you kind of want to see more than what you saw tonight. There was a play in the uh second period where he had the puck. Uh and it was about to be a breakout and he was right in front of the net and some a blue player came right behind him and just took it with zero effort. Yeah. Like just here I’ll take that. Uh you can’t have those type of plays. It it just seemed like a guy tonight that knew he had no chance of changing anybody’s mind. So, he’s just going through the motions. I hope that’s not the case. That’s that’s not great. That that would be to me as a coach that would be alarming. And and Pat, our buddy in the chat said basically like maybe getting him getting sent down again killed his confidence. Sure. But then when you’re call look, this is the NHL. This is not college or high school hot. Like you have to earn your opport I don’t no one cares if you’re a first round pick if you’re not going to compete and for him to show up tonight. I I was sort of excit like look I think the Hawks are going to get past it in this game. But I want to see two guys specifically make their case. Riel and Kchinsky. Neither of them did anything in this game. Lucas Reichel had your very typical Lucas Reichel game. He had 1736 of ice time was a minus one. Three shot attempts. It’s actually pretty good for Lucas. What’s your top offensive threat on the roster as your top offensive guy? Three shot attempts in 17 minutes. Well, something that uh when I had that conversation with Mark Bernard earlier in the evening, how he’s saying he’s like, I tell all these guys all the time, even if you get called up because you’re going to be an injury replacement and it’s going to be short term, go up there and do something that makes the coach go, I can’t send this guy. I just talked about Andrew Shaw and Dylan Olsen. Olsson was the big prospect. Andrew Shaw was like, ah, he’ll be here for two games and go back down. And Andrew Shaw never went back. He never went back, right? Cuz he said, “Oh my god, I’m playing in the NHL. They are I’m not going to let them send me down.” Right? And that’s what And he says, you know, he says, I even tell this when we have to call up a kid from Indie to play a couple games in the AHL. Come up here and make us keep you here. Right. And there was none of that today. Or make us your first call. Right. You’re Yeah. Disappointing. Hopefully he gets, you know, the coaching staff in Rockford, a a new head coach down there can can get him back to what we saw at the end of last season because something changed and and it’s it’s it’s concerning. All right, Mario, anything we need to know? Uh any other nuggets or tidbits before we let you go? Um no, preseason’s over. Flush this game and let’s get to the regular season. Huzzah. All right, we’ll see you Monday at 2:30 for our season preview show. Sounds good. Let’s preview the season. Sounds awesome. All right, that’s Mario Turbosi from the United Center. Uh, we want to talk about the Tampa, Florida situation. Before we do though, good tweet here from Scott Powers. We talked about Anton Fondell who had a hat-tick and an assist today. We talked about Roman Canarov who’s been doing great in Russia. We failed to mention Vaklav Nestil scored his first goal for UMass tonight and had a team leading eight shots on goal and Mason West threw for 388 yards. I don’t like that. I don’t want that. I want Mason West to throw for like 96. It’s seven interceptions. I don’t want any of these division 2 football programs sniffing around. Oh, there Division Two is I think giving up hope. I think it’s division one. No, he’s terrible. He’s he’s he’s playing against cream puff teams in Minnesota. 388 and four touchdowns. Shut up. So anyway, a good weekend for the uh Hawks prospects and it’s only Saturday. Uh but this Tampa and Florida Panthers thing, if you missed it, they’ve had two preseason games over the last what three or four days and they have been nothing but you called it the Federal League nonsense. Fight after fight. There was a point tonight where there were only three Lightning players on their bench. I’m pretty sure Ogie Overthorp took a few sh What are you doing? Okay, here’s the thing. Stop it. I mean, it’s it’s I get Oh, you got to send a message. At least not you them. At least Tampa pretty much brought the AHL team with them for this nonsense. Yeah. Uh there is not any of their like Oliver Bjorkstrand is probably like the most important player that they dressed tonight. Oh, our old our old friend Boris Kachuk was there. Um back with Tampa. Funny how that works. Um but I know it was a home game, but Florida dressed a lot of their regulars getting involved in this nonsense. Jeff Petri, Seth Jones, Aaron Eckle got sucker punched in the side of the head and then went down. Uh he only played 41 seconds. Yep. Uh Demetri Kulakov, uh Mackey Samoskevich, Blackhawks legend Tyler Mott. He’s not longterm, but he had two assists tonight. Uh Evan Rodriguez, Carter Vhagian played uh Miko Nicola. Yeah. So they had a lot of their guys. So to get Aaron Ekblad when you’ve already lost Matthew Kachchuck until at least Christmas, Barkoff’s gone for the year. Aaron Ecklblad, a guy who has major problems staying healthy. You put him out there in this nonsense and he gets hurt when some some you know ECHL plug punches him in the side of the head to set to send a message. So it’s so stupid. So two days ago, 52 loss for the Panthers. 186 penalty minutes in that game. In this game, 294 penalty minutes. Seems like a lot. What are we doing? There was only It’s ridiculous. There was only eight players in the entire game that did not get at least one penalty. Stephen, how quickly can you put up a penalty summary if I throw it in Slack? All right, I’m throwing it in there right now. This is absolutely absurd. We might have to get a bigger TV to display this. Jesus. I mean, I get it. Tampa’s trying to say you’ve been you’ve been the big team in Florida and we’re here to tell you we’re not going away. And there there’s still some bad blood over the the Hegel play from last year. Sure. But doing it in a meaningless preseason game is stupid. It’s I mean, doing it any game is stupid. Let’s be honest. It’s entertaining. If you’re going to get a guy hurt, do it for two points in the standings. Oh my god, it’s it’s it’s crazy. It’s going to make those regular season games fun. Listen, they’re going to be fun anyway cuz they’re two awesome teams. I this all this does is make me want these two teams to play each other in the first round of playoffs. Now, that would be something. That would be amazing if anyone is alive to play it. I mean, the Panthers are still going to make the playoffs, folks. Oh, yeah. like yeah, they’re are like and the Blackhawks have their first round pick for next year. Um it’s certainly it’s it’s not going to be a lottery pick. There’s the penalty summary. That’s insane. On uh on YouTube that looks like a uh newspaper uh what do you call it? The transactions page. It looks like like one of those crazy like, you know, uh, tier three Ontario, you know, semi-pro league games on a Friday night, you know, on a Sbury Saturday night. Um, you know that song? That’s 16 10-minute majors. 36 penalties for the Lightning for 164 penalty minutes. 28 penalties for 130 penalty minutes for the Panthers. Okay. trying to listen to the effing song. Yeah, it’s knock it off. All right. Appreciate. I mean, it’s a fun game if you’re a fan. You paid money. Unless one of my best players gets hurt and I’m a contender. I mean, it’s cheaper than going to the Royal Rumble. I guess that’s true. That’s true. All right, we’re going to wrap things up. As we mentioned, oh, by the way, $10 super chat from Edward says, “Here’s 10 bucks for the Greg Boyson hiring fund.” Thank you. We’ll throw it in a few more zeros. We’ll throw it in a square in in a jar. Yes. Um, all right. We’re back. Monday, 2:30, season preview. We’re going to predict Central Division, playoff teams, cup champions, postseason awards. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Do not miss it. All Blackhawks. Yes, Greg will be here. Mario’s going to be here. It’ll be a three-man weave. Going to be a good time. So, don’t miss it. We’ll talk to you then 2:30 Monday on the CHDL Blackhawks podcast powered by Bet 365. We all s like the mayor.

  1. Call me crazy but I think giving Reichel an A is extremely disrespectful knowing his name is in trade rumors and that this management group wants him gone
