Payton Pritchard left BLEEDING after Celtics Practice | Practice Interview
talked a lot about trying to improve as defender and how much you want to make that a goal for you. What’s the process of that like compared to improving as an offensive player in terms of reps, mentally? I mean, it’s just competing at a a very high level, especially in practice. Um, I feel like for every person, it’s like defensively you can uh impact the game in different ways. So, like how do you best impact the game? you know, for me it’s not going to be by like blocking shots necessarily and all that, but it can be from hands being active, uh, steals being a pest, stuff like that. And then you you guys lost a lot of great Primary defenders this summer like Drew. Do you hope to take on more of those types of matchups? Is that something you like as you want to do? I would I would love that to be considered a 2A player is like uh definitely uh huge. So I would love that to have that uh label and uh I definitely work for it. for you. What is this new defensive style you guys are trying allow you to do that maybe pass? I mean it’s just being more aggressive defensively picking up more u I mean I kind of did it at times but it’s just more of a a full team effort to like you know emphasize like ball pressure picking up full court emp uh like picking up the pace more stuff like that. Last year adding muscle helped you with guarding guys like Luca and Kate Cunningham. Is that another goal this offseason to add more muscle and continue with that? Uh, I didn’t necessarily like I always trying to add more muscle, leaner, like it’s just like that’s always a priority. So, it wasn’t like an emphasis. It’s just it’s a lifestyle of like trying to get in better better shape. That was yesterday. But, uh, it’s been very physical. So, it’s definitely been a war out there. I am tired, but it’s good to push the body to these, uh, limits to get ready for the season. So, definitely pushing ourselves. What’s that like? Like what what’s it like being physical? No, I mean like just what level is it going on? Uh it’s just you know just when you see like okay seeing them who won the the championship like they get away with a lot of like hands, fouls, physicality, stuff like that. So like the NBA I feel like in the playoffs is like you know allowing a lot more physicality to happen but you got to learn how to play through it and be more physical. So uh we’re emphasizing it and um yeah it’s been good. Obviously, it’s a different team this year. Yeah. But what did you guys learn from getting defeated last year and on a level or competitive? It’s a it’s a long season. You know, you got to you got to stay motivated. Um, you know, to stay on top, it’s a lot of work. So, you got to put the work in every day and uh stay motivated. You played with Chris a long time ago in college, but how have you seen him behave here at Boston? Do you view yourself as like when there’s new guys, do you view yourself as like a leadership role or you want to like kind of take them under your wing a little bit? Um, I mean, I’ve been here, uh, this is going into my sixth year, so I understand the, you know, what the our team wants to do, the like the culture side of it. Um, and then obviously already having a previous relationship with him, just trying to help him uh get acclimated. But Chris is doing good. I mean, Chris is he’s a vet in the league, so he understands what what’s uh what’s at hand here. What have your impressions been of uh Ugo and what he can bring to your group? Um plays very hard. Uh definitely going to be a really good player eventually. Um but it it takes time for young players. I mean he’s what 19 years old. So you know this year and I mean every day it’s just about him just taking a step grow, keep getting better and better. Um you know you know you don’t you never know what you can become. Talk about that physicality you mentioned. They not afraid to stop. Yeah for sure. So we got to have that. Yeah, like you’re you’re not a player that has committed many fouls at all. Are you like more willing to kind of get in there and you take a couple to kind of push the limits of that physicality? Yeah, for sure. I mean, like you get six fouls, but it’s just a different emphasis. Like before we were playing more of a safe defense of like, you know, switching, live with contested shots, uh don’t foul, you know, don’t put people to the free throw line, but that’s kind of changed. The NBA evolves every year, so you got to, you know, change your game with it. So it worked for us when we won the championship. So didn’t work for us as much last year. So we got to evolve. Have you gotten a sense that like like things are going to be called differently at all this year? Like I know the refs have been around a lot. Are you guys trying to play? No, I know. I we don’t know that yet. I feel like that just comes when you play through the season and things change. Maybe they start calling different calls, but right now we just trying to emphasize pace and physicality. So So in terms of like ramping up playoff, you’re talking about like playoff level physicality. Bring that from the start of the season essentially not waiting until the playoffs. I’d rather I’d rather play very physical and fast like that and then if they start making calls then we have to change through that rather than like not doing it and then they’re not calling. You know what I mean? Like let’s started off with playing physical and then we can make adjustments off that. Are you at a different stage in your career? I mean you’ve said six years now. Is this stature? No. No. That’s that’s same me, same person that came in here hungry uh motivated uh and ready to take another step and help winning at the highest level. Feels like for you, Derek, then you guys are trying to put too much out. How did that mindset develop as the summer went on? Well, basketball’s a team game and when you take that mindset, you’re never going to play that well. So, uh when you try to think it’s you against the world, then you never end up winning at the highest level. So all of us together can do great things and win at a high rate. So uh that’s the goal. And it’s not just us three though. We’re going to need everybody. You know, Sam, Nimi, Anthony, like everybody’s going to have to uh play big roles this year and and each and one of us will have games where we win it. his back.
BRIGHTON – The Celtics continue their training camp at the Auerbach Center. Payton Pritchard talked about the physicality the Celtics are bringing at practice. “When you see OKC, who won the championship, they get away with a lot of hands, fouls, physicality, stuff like that. The NBA, in the playoffs, is allowing a lot more physicality.”
