Uh lost to the Utah Mammoth. A game where they got boat raced in the first period, showed plenty of resolve in the second period, but just couldn’t find that extra gear in the third period. A formula which sounds very familiar. Uh we’ll talk about Dickinson and Ascrov who both had they had rough nights, we’ll be honest. Then we’ll dig into the numbers behind this game. So, before we get to uh all that, do want to let you guys know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting fanduel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. So, uh, we will continue with as we’ve been kind of doing with these these preseason games with the good, bad, ugly, uh, kind of formula as the San Jose Sharks in their final preseason game lose six to four, uh, to the Utah Mammoth. Min celebrating. He made his return uh, and his first preseason game after dealing with an illness all for, you know, good chunk of preseason here uh, in training camp. Um, but but the Sharks. Uh let’s let’s start with the good with this game. Uh and I think you have to point to the second period where San Jose uh was right. You as poor of an effort uh as you could expect uh from the Sharks in the first period uh tough uh tough performance. Um, second period though, they found their gear, right? And the resolve in this team, I think, is a big part uh of what to kind of expect for for San Jose in this year as you try to kind of build this thing here. Um, and I I do think like this that second period showed a lot, right? because how many times have we seen these like you know 4 to1 games turn into seven to one type of games right and the Sharks battled back and and fought back and and you know made this a game right it was four to four um after after the second period um so good to see there good to see the resolve from this team and the fight from this team and you know the hope is you don’t have as many of the first periods that we had where that’s that’s the hope right is you don’t have as many of the first periods as as we had in the uh going into the regular season, but it’s good to know like this team isn’t going to quit and isn’t going to give up um from from the Sharks, you know, from a fan perspective, right? Um so I I do think that that showed a lot and you saw it was a lot of different people contributing um to it, right? and seeing Celabbrini and and Will Smith who like I thought Will Smith had his best period of the preseason in the second period and playing with M Celbrini will do that right for Will Smith who I think’s had a little bit of an up and down preseason but he hasn’t been able to play with Celabbrini and we know the chemistry that those two have um that ridiculous pass from Mlin Celabbrini to Will Smith on the power play where he just nutmegs uh Ian Cole there. Um like that’s your M celebr thing of actually that and the M celebriny uh diving to stop an empty net with uh you know down by two in the preeason uh like the kids the kids one up one uh for celebrity but um just you know like seeing that right and you had uh Adam Goddad who I think has has been one of the best sharks, you know, for his role. Like we know what Adam God is. He’s a bottom six player, but he’s been easily their most consistent shark. And I I think tonight, like, you know, tonight gives you hope that he can help to kind of elevate this bottom six, which has been a disaster over the past couple seasons, right? Um, and that, you know, uh, the Goodro Goddet Reeves line was was pretty solid tonight to be honest. And we we’ll, again, we’ll dig into it a little bit more at the end of the show, but uh, I feel really good about God debt and what his role is going to be for the Sharks. And I think he’s going to have a big year uh, for them. And like again, you’re trying to kind of elevate this bottom six here, which has been an absolute disaster. And I think God is kind of a huge, huge part of that. But I think he’s going to score 20 goals like he did last year. probably not. But if he can keep San Jose from playing in their own zone and and you know score some goals off the rush here and uh Godette looks like he had his got his wheels. Um it it feels like he’s going to have a pretty pretty big season for for San Jose and and for them. So um it was good to see like kind of just some of the other positive performances tonight. Uh again Joe had a golf good for you know nice for for him tonight. Tyler Tofuli a goal and assist as well for for Tofuli and um you like we’ve seen Tofoley with those bar down shots like he’s made an entire career out of out of those bar down type of shots um you know and go just like we just pencil in 25 to 30 goals from uh from from him. I thought Muka Mullan had a pretty solid night as well. He had his he didn’t really play kind of the the him and Ferrari didn’t really play much in this the third period there as uh they wanted to kind of give Dickinson like a big push there at the end and we’ll talk more about Dickens here in a little bit. But um I thought Mullan again, you know, I I think had a pretty solid night as well and especially when it came to kind of driving some of the offense uh for for San Jose. Um, but you know, it’s it’s tough to like it’s such a weird game where you again you’re you’re down by you’re down four to one. You can’t buy a save. You like anything that’s gone goes wrong like just ends up going to the back of the net. And just them kind of finding that gear and getting getting things going in the the second period. Um, like it does give me some hope. And again, it is the preseason, right? And yes, would you like them to play much cleaner, etc., etc.? Yes. But like I I do think this team is going to have some like I think they’re going to have some rocky moments here, especially the first kind of couple weeks, month of the season because there just is so many new players and new pieces, right? Uh with guys like Jeff Skinner and you know, Clingberg who played one game um in the preseason. Um Lety who’s new here, right? you know, like just all Orlav who had a rough uh game the other night. Like I do think with all these new players and pieces, like I there’s going to be a little bit of a jelling. Like so do not like write the season off if if the Sharks come out a little slow out of the gate. Um don’t write the season off, but um if if you can get some more performances like you did in the second period, I think the Sharks are going to be okay this year. And that’s that’s what we’re asking for is can you just kind of be okay. So, um we’re going to talk about uh Dickinson and Ascarov here uh who both struggled um and made some solid plays, but both I think had nights that they probably would like to redo. Uh so we’ll we’ll get to that here in just one second. The NFL season is here and FanDuel is an offer you don’t want to miss. Right now, new customers can bet just $5, get 300 in bonus bets if you win. That’s right. Pick a bet, put down five bucks, and if it hits, you unlock $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Uh, I love how Fandal gives you a bunch of different ways to play. Uh, they have parlays, so if you kind of have a feeling how you know a game’s going to go, uh, you can do something like that. They have player props. Uh, I really like uh I like Tua to have a pretty solid game against the Bengals and uh give me a Darren Waller touchdown against uh not the Bengals, sorry, the Panthers, but give me a Darren Waller touchdown. Uh and even follow live lines during the game. It makes watching football even more exciting when you’ve got a little something riding on the action. So, what have you been waiting for? Visit fanuel.com to download the FanDuel app today and get started. All right. Uh before we continue, do of course want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks your first list. And if you haven’t yet, perfect time to subscribe as we have uh we’re done with our preseason. We have Thursday, first game of the season. Uh so we’ll have plenty of fun stuff getting ready for the season. Uh our good friend Max Miller will come on here scheduled to come on. We’re going to do kind of our annual overunders and props and all this fun stuff. So uh make sure you guys are following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. All right. Uh so the bad I think Asgrov uh especially after Nadelovich’s performance yesterday with with the the kids uh Nadelkovich was absolutely solid right spectacular and you hoped Ascrov would at least would kind of come out and match tonight and did not right. uh like weird game. It felt like like the teams only got like Sharks only had 13 shots in goal and Utah only had 24. It felt much higher, but it wasn’t. But uh when you’re you know you give up six goals on 24 shots, not a math guy, but that that’s uh three4s of your you’re making three4s of the saves there. um you were hoping Ascarov would come out and try to kind of cement himself and you know like put himself in position to kind of undoubtedly be Thursday’s opening night starter and and now I don’t know like if if you’re Wowski like Nidulvich has been a better goalie to start the season and again like we I none of us or myself like I didn’t expect Ascrov to just kind of come out and get twothirds of the game of the games to start the season. Like it it should be a 50/50 split. So if doesn’t like if Nuck starts Thursday, like Ascrov is going to start on Saturday. Like it shouldn’t be a a big deal of, you know, like you’re not going to see just Ascrov getting, you know, a bunch of starts here to like I I very much believe they’re on the Dust Wolf plan of 50/50 to start the season and then hopefully Ascrov kind of takes over here. So, um, but it was a little disappointing the first period where definitely that first goal was really soft. I know, you know, some of the goals he kind of got left out to dry. Uh, some of them you definitely want to save there. Like the Dylan Gunther goal like Gunther’s Gunther’s got an amazing shot. There’s, you know, uh, would you like to have got him got over like half a second sooner? Yes, probably. But, uh, again, Dylan Gunther’s got an amazing shot, you know, and even like I I like the last two, right? Um that the fifth goal was super fluky that bounced off uh Muka McDulan and then bounced off McBain and went in. Like there’s there’s not too much you can do there. And then the tandem goal where like there’s a reason why his name is Turbo, right? Because he’s so fast. He just burns uh the defensive guys and Will Smith and Mlin are doing their best to try to get back there. Um, but you would have liked when things were kind of going off the rails in the first period for Ascarov to kind of be that guy who can stop the bleeding, right? Um, so just it’s disappointing, especially after how well Nadelkovic has played that Ascrov just kind of wasn’t able to to kind of match that uh and keep the Sharks in it uh so they don’t have to kind of make this furious comeback in the second period. So, uh, like preseason, uh, you know, again, not worried, but just it would have been nice to see him kind of stand on his head a little bit there. And we’ve seen him stand on his head before. So, um, the ugly tonight though with Sam Dickinson, and like I don’t think this this means that Sam Dickinson is going to, you know, uh, like not make the team and Sam Dickinson’s a bust and stuff like that. I do think that um you know like it was actually one kind of by design and two kind of you know like just a reminder. So like Warsovski this is from Max Miller. Worski and Sam Dickson. I thought Dicki was just okay. I thought he struggled a little bit moving pucks which is to be expected. The kid’s been through the ringer here for three weeks with a rookie tournament starting back uh back tobacks and the travel. He’ll be fine. We’ll continue to work with him. He was just off little night a little tonight. And again, like I think that was also part of the design, right? He played backto back. Um you know, played a bunch of minutes uh against Vegas, traveled to San Jose, traveled from San Jose to Utah, which the the travel’s a little bit weirder during the preseason. Um, and like they threw him out a bunch at the end of the third. And I think this was kind of that stress test with with Sam Dickinson tonight. And did he play well? No. And easily his worst game of the preseason. Like and that that’s fine. Again, we know that like the Sharks are not going to do this to him, I think, in in the regular season where they’re going to put him in these positions and the Sharks should have a more veteran lineup. And again, like if if Sam Dickson kind of goes with the Will Smith approach where maybe they hold him out on back to backs and they kind of limit his minutes as best they can as a defenseman. But, um, I I do think they wanted to kind of put him in a stress test and see how he performed. Um, and you know, he made some solid plays. He also made some some bad plays tonight. And like you’re going to see that from a 19-year-old defenseman. Uh, which is again, it is fine, uh, from him. So, uh, you know, I think this will be a big- time learning experience. I also believe in Sam Dickens. I watched him enough at London where when you would see him have a bad game, which was rare, but you would see him have bad games, he would bounce back with a monster performance the next game uh in London. And yes, different approach with with San Jose and and in the NHL, but I think there’s enough there. And I I I think that the Sharks are going to be able to navigate with this with it. like you you knew there’s going to be some rough patches with Dickinson uh as he gets used to the speed of the NHL and the pace and kind of that decision making. I’m not worried. Right. Again, there it’s not this whole season is about the development of Dickinson and Misa and Ekkund and and Smith and Celerrini and you know Ascrov like you would you just want them like to show improvement and take steps and if you have a bad game which Dickinson clearly had a bad game tonight how do you respond right I think that’s the big question for Dickinson is how do you respond and I I’ve I firmly believe Dickinson’s going to have a much better night on Thursday night uh when he plays uh when they play against Vegas or whenever he’s in the lineup next. I I do believe Dickinson’s going to have a much better performance uh in his next game than compared to uh than what we saw tonight. So, uh but overall like you know there was plenty of of like that whole first period was just poop. Uh and the third period like again that kind of not finding that next gear. So, we’re going to talk about that here a little bit. Uh, we’ll dig into the numbers, talk about kind of all the forwards, etc., etc. So, we’ll get to that here in just one second. All right, before we finish up, do of course want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks your first listen today. For your second listen, check out the 2025 NHL season preview on Locked on NHL. an eight episode series bringing the best local insight to make you the most informed uh NHL fan heading into this season. They have each division you have a round table of teams that were like in the playoffs or just missed the playoffs and then you have a round table of of teams that are the hopefuls to kind of jump up. Uh, you go check out the Pacific hopefuls here on Locked on Sharks or like I said, you can check them all out on Locked on NHL on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcast. All right. Uh, so again, not like not a lot of offense in this or not not a lot of sustainable offense, we’ll say, as as 10 goals on, you know, combined like less than 40 shots. Not great goalending tonight. But um 515 though 4752 of 515. Um Mammoth out took 38 to 33 shot attempt. So much closer. Uh a lot of that uh the Sharks coming back in in the second period to kind of really even that up there. Um actual shots though 18 to11 in favor of the Mammoth. 20 to 16 scoring chances in favor of the Sharks. 10 to four high danger chances in favor of the Mammoth. Uh 1.53 to 1.12 expected goals four in favor of the mammoth though. Uh for the forward lines here uh Eklan Wenberg to Foley led the way with time on ice 1031 8 to 10 shot attempts uh two to three actual shots had a goal gave up a goal as well. uh.18 to.39 expected goals for um you know like this this line is is I think your backup line if Misa’s out uh the line like the they’re they’re professionals they know exactly what they’re doing they all know their roles on on this line like I am if this has to be your second line for an extended period of time 100% okay with this line like if if Wick has to come up and play and like to fully had a goal tonight I thought Equin was super effective as usual tonight. Like Eklan’s had a really good preseason. Feel like he’s going to have a really big season for the Sharks and as he continues his growth and development. Like just perfectly professional line, which is a huge upgrade over what we’ve had the past couple seasons. So, we’ll take it. Smith Celebrating Kurv uh 1025 10 to seven shot attempts, 3 to2 actual shots. uh zero goals four gave up a goal.31 to.13 expected goals four 5-2 scoring ch like uh turns out Mlin Celerbraney pretty important to what the Sharks are going to want to do this year uh as he should be right celebr with with CBrinius Smith right away especially in the second period again I thought Smith had his best period of the preseason in the second period Uh, no coincidence with M Calbrini back. It opens up Will Smith to go do Will Smith things. Um, and I think Kersev’s going to be that kind of, you know, line connector on this line. I I do I’m really curious to see like I do want to see how this line continues its growth and development. And we’ve seen Kersia be a big piece with Badard two years ago. Uh we’re hoping that these Sharks can kind of bind that again by having him play with uh Melabbrini. So interesting, you know, uh I like to see kind of how the this line continues his growth. So um Gdro Goddet Reeves uh 8:16, 5 to2 shot attempts, four four to one actual shots, two goals, four. Um, Adam Goddet, like I mentioned earlier, Adam Goddet, I think, uh, he’s going to have a really nice role for the Sharks. I think again elevating that bottom six, which desperately needs elevation. Uh, Reeves, you know, like wasn’t as I think he was a little bit quieter tonight compared to what we saw uh, the other night when he played. Um, but you know, like I understand why Reeves was in the lineup, especially with what we saw from Utah last year with them trying to u uh be a menace. If Reeves can just play like this, that’s a big if, like, and it’s not every game, but if Reeves can play like this when he’s in the lineup, just quietly effective, um, I we’ll we’ll live with it. So, um, Goodro probably with that goal, uh, secured his job, um, tonight. So, we’ll see. I I don’t expect Good to get, you know, waved or anything like that, but still. Uh, and then Skinner of Stop Truck, Ethan Cardwell, uh, played 640, four to seven shot attempts. Uh, one to four actual shots, gave up a goal as well. 009 to41 expected goals for uh you know Cardwell pretty quiet tonight uh unfortunately would have liked to see him kind of build off his performance from yesterday but again kind of little bit of the you know second night of backto-back with a fair amount of travel rate from Vegas to San Jose from San Jose to uh Utah so like you know a little bit quiet there same thing with a stop check a stop check they mentioned on the broadcast uh guy just cannot uh keep his stick uh either breaks or he loses it or something like that. Like we need to get him like the tacky glue or something. I don’t know. To keep a his stick in his hand or not break, I don’t know. But um I I it’s hard for me to envision a stop truck making the roster out of camp right now. So uh we shall see. But and then Skinner like I I’m not I’m gonna kind of hold off on Skinner because I I playing with a stop truck and Cardwell like he had a nice kind of turnaround shot there again. I think when Skinner’s playing with Wenberg or whomever like I’m he’ll be more effective to than than what he was tonight. So, um, defensively though, like, uh, you know, I I do think, you know, like I kind of talked about a little bit, but, uh, I thought Muk Mullan continues to have a pretty strong preseason and I thought he kind of followed up tonight. Uh, like we talked about yesterday with Deise, I think he’s just going to, you know, I think he’s going to be like your eighth defenseman. If he needs to play, he needs to play and he’ll be, you know, he’ll be cromulants. Nothing spectacular. Uh Ferraro, you know what Ferraro is. Again, kind of got burnt on that that one play by uh Brandon Tanv there. Uh Lilrin and Nick Ley were okayish, right? Um but again, like you saw I think you saw that they wanted to get Dickinson and some of the young guy like an opportunity to to kind of play as much as possible. Um and then Ascrov, like I said, tough night for Ascrov. probably one he’s wants to quickly forget and move on from. I I I think we’ve seen Ascrov even last year the Barracuda though we’ve seen Ascarov put put a bad game behind him pretty quickly and I I wouldn’t be surprised if uh whenever we see Ascrov if he comes out and has a strong performance. So um overall though like I’m so glad the preseason’s done. We can actually talk about like real you know get to the real hockey here. It’ll be nice next year when we’re down to just four preseason games instead of six. And especially with um just the way the Sharks had it scheduled this year, right, where you had uh four preseason games in six days, like that’s Yeah, like let’s four preseason games over over like 10 days, I think, is is the way to go right there. So, get a little bit of time in between, whatever, something like that. But, uh next year it’ll be fun with it kind of a little bit different. But um anyway, that’s going to be it. Uh we’ll be back Sunday nights as we’ll have some roster changes and try to get as close to as a final roster as we can. Like I said, Max Miller is scheduled to be on uh for our annual conversations here later this week. We’ll get you guys uh geared up and ready for the uh as these Sharks take on the Vegas Golden Knights. We’ll have some probably some bold predictions as well. Uh, so make sure you follow along wherever you get podcasts and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and on Tik Tok at lockdown sharks. Follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole. Uh, until tomorrow. Bye friends.

I wished for a better preseason and start because I expect the second half of the season to be much tougher once we ship out players at the TDL. I really hoped training camp would have been more fruitful.
This was a stress test for Dickinson. He'll learn his tendencies when he gets tired
