Sean McVay On Moving Forward From Thursday’s Loss, Terrance Ferguson’s First Career Catch & More
Sean, how’d you guys come out injury-wise last night? I’m not sure yet. I haven’t met with Reggie. Okay. Um, is Justin Deed your full-time starter at left guard? No. Uh, Steve is still getting back to health. You know, Justin’s done a really nice job at him, and I’ve been really pleased with him. Um, you know, but the expectation is is when Steve returns back to full health and plays the way that he’s capable of, expect him to be able to earn that role back. But do feel really good about what Justin has done for us. I mean, we saw Steve on the field goal unit last night. Like, just at this point, what can he physically not do? Yeah, it was really hard just because of the Thursday game. You know, I thought Justin, you know, Steve was working himself back in and even though 100% Steve, we still felt like that was going to be better, not 100% Steve was going to be better to have him up in a backup role if something were to happen. um the rapport, the continuity that Justin’s been able to establish with Alleric and with Coleman. Um just felt like, hey, wanted to be able to allow Steve the opportunity to get a full week’s worth of practice, feeling like he was really had that ankle secure and sturdy for himself and and where we we were really able to evaluate him fully. Um and that’s going to be the expectation for our preparation with Baltimore, but he’s going to earn that spot back by the way he practices. And you talked last night about the team needing to improve on its execution moving forward. Just how did you feel about the way the team prepared heading into last night? Did you feel like they came in with like the right level of focus and practice? I did, Adam. I really did. You know, I mean, I love this group. I I I love the way that they prepare. I mean, and you give San Francisco credit. There’s going to be a lot of things that we wish we handled better. Um, you know, but I think there’s a lot of situations that the enemy does have a say. Um, you know, I I’ll look forward to really diving into this tape and figuring out where we can improve. What I continue to feel about this group is they’re never out of the fight. Uh, they continue to believe. They continue to find a way. And I mean, you want to talk about two gut punches um in terms of how we’ve lost the two games that we have. We’re a couple, you know, we’re a couple execution plays away from being a 5-0 team, but the reality is we’re three and two. Um, and how we move forward and how we use this. And I can’t remember feeling much uh more disgusted waking up after a tough loss than I have after the two that we’ve had. And it’s because I love this group so much. Um it’s why I said what I did to you guys yesterday is because I feel a tremendous responsibility to do a good job of trying to put our players in positions to have successful outcomes. And when I don’t think I’m I’ve done that or when I think I can do better or we can do better, I mean it chaps me to no end. But I promise you this, I’m gonna work my ass off to make sure that I continue to be better for this group. And that’s the expectations that I know that everybody in our building will have. And uh this is going to galvanize us. I promise you that. Thank you, Sean. Ste. Hey Sean, just what was it like being able to get um Terrence Ferguson a handful of offensive snaps last night and just what did you make of uh you know his first career catch? Yeah, he’s a stud. I mean, he went up over the top of somebody in a man coverage, made a great contested catch for 20 plus yards. Um, you know, we got to be able to figure out a way to be able to get him going. Um, it, you know, it was such a weird game. You know, they possessed the ball 40 minutes. Um, you know, the the the plays were so limited early on and then you’re kind of playing from behind, but got in there in some of the third down known passing situations. Um, he’s going to be a really good player for us, I believe, and I thought he did an excellent job with the opportunity that he had last night. And then understanding, you know, constraints like cap space and roster spots and all those things. Um just how content are you with the current uh group of corners that you have and are you looking to still add to that group potentially even with signing Trey Brown recently? Yeah, I think I think we’re going to look into those things. I mean, we always want to try to be able to improve. Um, you know, like I said, I I’m going to really do a deep dive into this tape, but I I I really like, you know, the the group of players that we’re working with, and we want to continue to find ways to be able to put them in good positions to have successful outcomes. And and again, give the Niners credit. I thought Kyle and their staff did a really good job of of distributing the field. The ball was coming out quick even though we were getting some quick wins up front. Um there was some error in some of our underneath coverages and and we’ll look to see you know where we can improve collectively but uh you know I don’t want to uh go too deep into that before I have the appropriate information and I’m able to dissect everything appropriately. Thank you. You’re welcome. Hey Sean. Um you know we write a lot about it you know going into a game like that how many players are injured on the 49ers and whatnot. Um, and I know you guys prepare your players to play against whoever they’re facing, but do you do you think that ever seeps into their consciousness, you know, that that they are playing an under what looks like an underman team? You know, I certainly don’t feel that way. I certainly hope not. Um, our job and and clearly, you know, I got to do a better job of getting us ready, but I don’t think so, Gary. Humility is only a day away as we just learned last night. Um, and you give them credit. The NFL is too difficult. It’s a pretty similar situation last year, you know, when we won in week three. Um, and so you you look at it and um, no, I I I am I’m naive probably to a lot of the stuff that’s out there relative to the social media things like that. I’m obviously aware of who was out there. Um, I know our players are probably more in tune with that stuff, but I love the mindset and mentality of this group. Um, if anything, you know, you use these as learning opportunities to make sure, but I don’t I I didn’t get that sense at all. I think there’s too much respect for that group. Um, those players that that coaching staff and really this league as a whole with how competitive it is and let last night be a learning lesson for us that uh the humility thing is very real and we’ll use it the right way moving forward. And uh I know you’re going to dive back into this, but what’s what’s going on with the kicking game and how can you guys fix this? Oh man, you know, I wish it was just one thing, Gary. Um you know, but when you watch the protection um we we we’ve got to fix it. And um and it’s not one thing in particular. There’s there’s different locations and spots and people that have not executed the way that we’re capable of. We’ve got to consistently use better techniques and um you know, I thought we had a hold on it. I thought we did a good job against Indianapolis. Sorry, this light is so annoying. Um I thought we had a uh I thought we had a good handle on it and uh and clearly I was not uh right in that. So um I we got to fix it. We got to go back to work and we got to get the right techniques and we got to get the right people on there because uh that has been a killer for us and it’s cost us two games. Thanks very much John. Um last week when Sorry. You’re right. Um last year when Kairen was dealing with a couple fumbles, he said you guys talked and had a really good conversation. Curious how you address this with him if you do at all. Well, I think the first thing is is, you know, you you you let him know you love him. You appreciate appreciate him as a competitor. And um I think that’s why I feel so sick about the way that the game ended because, you know, there’s like there’s opportunities where he makes a big fourth down conversion. Um you know, after that to be able to keep that play alive, to keep a drive alive. Um and you wanted to be able to give guys an opportunity to be able to respond and that’s what he’s consistently done. Um, you know, you go back and you look at it, you know, I think you want to make sure that you let guys know that you number one love them unconditionally, you support them, and you want to try to be able to give them the tools to solve the problems. Um, anytime in this league with that way guys attack at the football if you don’t have both hands on the ball in traffic, you’re going to leave yourself susceptible for it to come out. It’s what it appeared like what occurred right there. But I love that guy. Um I’m always I’m riding with him and uh you know we got to figure out a way to to improve and and he’ll be the first to take accountability which is why you want to put your arm around him and be right there with him. Um you know and and I’m no different than him in terms of uh you know where we can all collectively improve and I expect everybody to have that approach. Is that something you can improve? I mean I think you know here’s what I would say. I think that this league does such a good job. I think there’s certain techniques and fundamentals. The answer is yes. You have to be so intentional about it. And then there are certain times where defend defenders and defensive players do such a great job of of attacking at it that sometimes it might come out. But but the answer is yes. You can improve upon that and uh and we certainly need to be able to do that. Thank you. You’re welcome. Dennis, did we wrap up with Greg? Good morning, coach. Morning. Can you talk about uh Matthew’s sustained excellent and how it could be taken for granted because he does it so easily? Yeah, it’s it’s not taken for granted for us. Um, you know, he’s a great competitor. I think, um, you know, he certainly gave us a chance with the way that he played and the way that he was able to move, manipulate the pocket, uh, move the ball down the field. I thought he was in total command. I think that’s one of the things that um you know, you always want to try to be able to figure out all right, what’s the best in different scenarios and I think one of the things that you think about is is probably wasn’t the I know it wasn’t the best decision uh to take the ball out of his hands in crunch time on that fourth down last night. Um you know, even though you think you you might think, hey, that’s that’s the best option for the moment. Um are you providing the clarity for the players to be able to execute? Are you putting them in the right spots? and whether we win or lose, those are things that I’m always and that we’re always asking oursel as coaches. But he has been outstanding, Dennis. Um, you know, the crazy thing about Matthew is when you’re talking to him after the game, he’s just wondering what he could do differently. And that’s where you just feel sick for our players because our players, our coaches, um, they put so much into it. And, uh, and you want to do right by them. And, uh, and that’s why this one stings, but it is temporary and, and we’re not going to sit here and cry about it. we’re going to move forward the right way. It’s not going to make this weekend very enjoyable for me. Um, but we will use it for the right uh, you know, we’ll use it the right way as we come back and we start our preparation uh, for our next game. And and just a followup, how does this game prepare your ball club for say like week 15 or week 17? I think every game is a learning op, Dennis. Um, you know, through these five games, holy gez, have we had a lot of different experiences. Um, I’ve learned a lot about this group. I think we’re going to continue to learn about ourselves. And I think this game will really give us a good opportunity to lean in and be who we say we want to be. Um, and that starts with me, you know, not being a fraud about it and uh and leaning in and uh and doing a better job for us. Thank you, coach. Hey, Sean. Uh Terrence Bergson got his first catch last night. Uh Darquo Hunter still waiting to get some action with, you know, what we’ve been talking about this whole time. Are those guys getting any closer to earning playing time since week one? Are there is there a chance that they’re going to get more of a role going forward? Where are they at right now? Yeah, Terrence is doing a good job. Um I think he certainly, you know, showed why he’s capable. um you know and the one opportunity that he got and he was separating on some other routes where he could have got the football and um you know they ended up busting some coverages where he might have been the primary and we ended up finding Kairen into the into the flat for a couple plays that you saw last night that uh that Terrence was also winning and separating. Uh he is doing a good job. You know, Jarz, I really love the way that he goes about his business. Continues to work. Um you know, he’s he’s continuing to to improve. uh whether or not he’s closer to, you know, being having a role with us as far as the running back’s concerned. Um, you know, it’s it’s hard for me to say right now, but I do love the way that he’s gone about his business, and I think Terrence is only going to continue to improve um and get more opportunities as we go because uh he showed that uh you know, he’s he’s got that capability that we love so much coming out of Oregon, the way that he was able to go up and make a big time play for us last night. And last thing, have you started to look toward I mean you obviously have. Have you started to look toward how you’re going to handle the next two weeks in terms of being on the road taking a couple of long trips and how that can how that can help or hurt a team? What’s what’s your experience been in the past and what do you what do you anticipate? Yeah, you know what I actually think it’s great um you know because it’s the scenario that we’re dealt. So what we’ll do is um you know we’ll have a normal week of preparation. We’ll go out to Baltimore on Saturday, but then we’ll stay out there um in our preparation for Jacksonville going into the London game. Um and then we’ll fly out on Friday. So, that gives us a good opportunity to really be able to lean in. Um I think it’ll be good for guys, you know, to be able to get a couple days off, let the emotions, let their bodies recover and recuperate. Um and then we’ll come back swinging on Monday. Uh but but it’ll be a normal week of preparation and then we’ll just stay out in Baltimore to kind of shorten that trip to London. uh when we go play Jacksonville before or by. But what a big stretch this is going to be for us. Thank you. Thanks, coach. Okay. Thanks, guys.

Coach, pls don't run behind our weak side (right side). It has NOT worked.
These two heartbreaking losses early in the season is crucial to waking up a beast
Rams will win the super bowl
Come on guys! It’s still early! Go rams!
Avila is the new Noteboom
So many things need to change , Special teams needs work , Need to draft a cnr , Need more up tempo series for Stafford , he's the best QB in league in 2mins and no huddle , Corum needs more ball , I love schular but that was his worst game giving ez intermediate routes for Mac , fix all these things and the Rams are SB contender.
As much as we disagree with the tush push, maybe it’s time to implement the “Puka Push”. Puka + Verse = 1st down. And remind Kyren “two hands” before each play. Nearly all of his fumbles happen one handed. He made a mental mistake, but it’s a team loss. Ferguson looks great, and we should give Hunter a chance. Devante gets too many targets for his 50% completion ratio. He’s not in sync with Stafford yet. Go deep with Tutu at least twice per game. I think we play better when we start with the ball.
Mcvay what a sweet guy 😉 The best coach ever 😘
The RAMS wet the bed again. What an embarrassing team loss from coaching staff down to its players! Pretenders or con-tenders?
The beginning of a meltdown
I don't know what people expected vs 9ers on 4 days rest missing starting cb LG and RT KDot playing hurt. Still have a chance to neutralize this loss. Yeah it sucked but not the end of the world
It's pretty clear the Rams were not prepared for this game luckily it's still early in the season.
Special Team line needs strength. And I wish Ramsey would’ve been brought back or someone similar in talent.
Matthew is the ONLY one who had a flawless game. I WAS aghast yelling WHY are you RUNNING the ball when you have MATTHEW who has been playing flawlessly all game. I was YELLING .. NOOOOOO Give the ball to Matthew. Sigh. The Eagles loss hurt … but your news conference and listening to the guys … I could let it go and have hope. THIS ONE REALLY STUNG. I still haven't gotten over it. But I am a RIDE OR DIE fan … even though I scream & curse at you at the TV … SOOO – once again … I will stop this devastating feeling as a fan … KNOWING YOU GUYS REALLY WON BOTH OF THOSE GAMES except for the scoreboard and that you killed the game yourselves … you were NOT BEAT … and give it another Sunday. UGH. Love you Sean … LOVE THIS TEAM. Lets get em Rams.
Coach McVay, give up the play calling and manage the game. You can still have input on what your OC calls.
One piece of advice…….TAKE THE FREAKING BALL WHEN YOU WIN THE COIN TOSS ESPECIALLY IN OT!!! This way you get to touch the football offensively twice .
This loss hurt my soul!!! Work on the kicker, Kyren Williams needs to hold onto the ball better, special teams and we’ll be in the Super Bowl np.
Can we please let Karty go! His kicking angle is too low and also the special teams that blocks for him 😡.. Kyren fumble prone
We’re off to a great start
Should be an Eptic season if everybody stays healthy 🙏
What I don’t get, is how come I knew at home that the 49ers were gonna throw underneath and between the numbers. it’s the simplest throw, you cleared it out with crossers. So if you understand that you can design a defense to defend that. and make changes if you see the 49ers attacking somewhere else, that’s when you keep track of down and distance when they hit that other play. I just don’t know why people make football so hard. And you keep an eye on McCaffrey. he’s never alone and you rally to the tackle no stacking meaning do not run behind your teammate. Find your own alley attack. Watch his hips breakdown wrap up. Pee wee football technique work. F‼️K!
I believe they are focused on winning it this year. Don’t be surprised to see Snead pull something off soon. Maybe even a back. Kamara??
Please!… stop over hyping the rivalry jersey. It looks more like Michigan’s wolverines alternative jersey.
Once a running back gets the reputation of coughing it up , he better keep both hands glued to the football
Bring back Todd Gurley
Duct tape kyreens arms with the ball in practice ..it works on those lose ball carries it will knock that fumbling out trust me it works.
corrum nd kyren both cant catch out the backfield smh man
Miners won by default…nothing more. Go RAMS
Punch in the face before the ball got hit, did you see that?
