Our first two opponents Panthers and saints are some of the worst defensive lines in terms of generating pressures this season, despite pff saying we have a top 5 oline. And then Seattle

  1. kyler has the 2nd worst o line in the league, one of the worst playcallers in the league, a trash receiving core that cant get separation or catch the ball, and yet he’s carrying this bumass team and somehow takes the blame anytime we lose

  2. Seattle’s defensive line is clearly awesome unfortunately, but for me this kinda goes back to monti who i think has done a solid job but it baffles me that we did NOTHING besides adding hayden connor in the 6th round to the oline, and hopefully we get will hernandez back soon. Paris and froholdt are the only guys i feel good about.

  3. This really contradicts that one tweet saying we have a top 5 O-Line because we know our run blocking is non existent.

  4. Honestly this doesn’t mean anything at all. It’s not a statistical model so there’s no weight to it at all. It’s purely just pressure + sack rate + TTT.

The issue is that the QB has a lot of say in all of those things, you need to contextualize things like this. We know off of year of data that scrambling QBs take more sacks on average, they just do.

TTT also is an odd one to throw in, seeing as the TTT depends a lot of the type of route thrown. Late breaking stuff over the middle takes a long time to develop and short underneath stuff is quick. We also know Kyler is bottom 3 in air yards this year, so guess what? He’s throwing quick underneath routes which suggests a quick throwing time. This does not make any implications that he had to throw due to pressure.

Speaking of, let’s dive into some of the teams ahead of the Cardinals.

    1. Bo Nix

Fairly similar TTT to Kyler, 2.63 seconds compared to 2.47 seconds for Kyler. Only a difference of about 1/10 of a second. But let’s dive deeper into pocket time which I think matters more in regard to pressure, more time in pocket = less pressure right? Well they both have just about the same pocket time on average 2.4 seconds for Bo and 2.3 seconds for Kyler. In fact Bo has a higher pressure percentage by 3%. Despite this, he has only taken 3 sacks on the year. He also has 13 more hurried throws and the exact same amount of hits at 7.

    2. Trevor Lawerence

He has nearly the exact same TTT as Kyler at 2.43 vs 2.47. But get this, he actually has even less pocket time on average than Kyler, 2.2 vs 2.3. He’s also only taken 3 sacks, but he has only scrambled 5 times vs Kyler’s 15. Not only that, but he has more throw aways and 3x the amount of drops for Kyler at 16 vs 5.

    3. Jared Goff

A longer TTT than Kyler at 2.76 vs 2.47 seconds, and also a long pocket time at 2.5 seconds vs 2.3 seconds than Kyler. He does get more time in the pocket, however he has way more pressure and eats hits at a much higher rate. He’s pressured at nearly 25% of the time! This is against 15.8% for Kyler. He also has 17 hits taken vs 7 for Kyler. Again he has more throwaways than Kyler too. Despite this he’s only taken 4 sacks.

    4. Matthew Stafford

He’s actually faster than Kyler at TTT by a hair at 2.45 vs 2.47 seconds. Pocket time is also negligible at 2.4 vs 2.3 seconds. For pressures he’s at 33 vs 25 for Kyler and a similar pressure percentage at 17.1 vs 15.8. Despite this he’s been hit almost 3x as much at 20 hits vs Kyler’s 7. He’s also only scrambled once and they have the same amount of throw aways at 2. However, he has only 9 sacks in over 53 more attempts. How does a glacier like stafford have less sacks with nearly the exact same TTT, pocket time, pressure rate, and pressures?

    5. Patrick Mahomes

I see a lot of people say Mahomes is down relative to his highs and that Murray’s counting stats are similar, however, look at the more advanced stats between them this year, it’s bonkers the stratosphere between the two. Mahomes is very quick with his TTT at 2.38 vs 2.46 seconds for Kyler. What’s crazy is his pocket time is the lowest I could find at 2.1 seconds. So he’s faster to throw and has less time in the pocket than Kyler. Now here’s what I love since people will say it’s unfair about play styles or whatever, but Patrick actually has more scrambles this year than Kyler at 17 vs 15. He also has nearly the same amount of pressures and pressure rate as Kyler with 31 and 18.7 respectively against Kyler’s 25 and 15.8. So he’s pressured at a higher rate yet has 7 sacks against Kyler’s 13 despite this and less pocket time and leas time to throw. It shows too, as he has 22 hits recorded vs 7 for Kyler.

Now this is just data and we all know football isn’t played on spreadsheets, however there does seem to be a trend. The “better” offensive lines actually have QBs that are getting hit more often in general as well as similar or worse pressure rates given to their QBs. The difference is, the QB is either getting the ball out faster, scrambling less, standing tall in the pocket and taking hits, or some combination of all these.

QBs have a lot more say in the pressure they face and sacks they take than many of you give them credit for. Every single fan base blames the offensive line bar none, but QBs have multiple methods to mitigate what the defensive gives them and the best QBs utilize that to their full advantage. They can audible, they can shift protection as needed, they can identify blitzers and hit hot routes, they can take hits on the chin if they can anticipate where a receiver breaks open if they can just get the ball there, hell they can call a timeout if they just don’t like what they see. Blaming the offensive line constantly is lazy football analysis and takes agency away from the most important position in possibly all of sports which is the QB.
