I Can’t Believe What This 49ers Rookie Is Doing..
In a year full of surprises for San Francisco, probably the biggest one was their fifth round selection out of Kansas State and Marqueis Seagull. The rookie safety was able to grab onto the starting job week one and really hasn’t looked back. Not only is he a tackling machine, ranking third on San Francisco’s defense and second among all safeties in the NFL, he’s also made several key plays that kept San Francisco in the game. Like most recently against the Rams, he came up from his safety position on fourth and one in overtime and stopped the back short of the marker, winning San Francisco the game. On top of that, he offers ideal versatility for Robert Saul’s defense as he has a background as a quarterback. He spent his first couple of years of his collegiate career there before transferring over to the safety position. meaning the future is brighter than ever for Marqueis Seagull. Especially if you consider the fact he’s one of the most athletic safeties across the National Football League as he has a relative athleticism score of 9.64 and he ran his 40-yard dash in a blistering fast 4.37 seconds. So, in this video, we’re going to go over what’s made Seagull such an effective player in Sol’s defense so far and where he can continue to improve to show why I believe he can be San Francisco’s next Pro Bowl level safety. Initially starting out, every time I turn on Seagull’s tape, what really stands out to me is how quickly he’s able to recognize the play, especially running plays. Here on his fourth down stop in overtime, for instance, you have to realize this is a fifth round rookie who’s pretty new to the position, but he looks like a vet. He’s able to identify this wide receiver motioning pre- snap, which gives him an indicator based on his film study. 23 is getting the ball and coming right off 88’s block. post snap, he’s able to confirm it. And here you see his insane athleticism. Despite starting deep in his safety position, he instantly closes his distance, meets his back in the hole, and pushes him back, stopping them on fourth and one, winning San Francisco the game in overtime. In a similar way here, lined up in a traditional safety alignment, Seagull once again is using pre-nap reads to give him an indicator what the play is postnap. Here he’s reading this wide receiver motioning across the field, giving him an indicator it’s potentially a jet sweep or a fake jet sweep. This is why he starts to motion pre- snap towards this wide receiver. And then post snap, he starts to read the offensive lineman, creating clear lanes for this back to run behind. And knowing gets an inside run here, he shoots it without any hesitation and meets his back right in this open lane. And he does a phenomenal job of tackling. He gets low right here or breaks down in the open field. And then once he makes contact with his back, he’s shooting through his hips to bring him down for only a gain of four yards. And even when Seagull isn’t given any pre-nap indicators what the offense may run postnap, he has an uncanny ability of identifying the play. To really illustrate this point on this play, Seagull is able to identify the run from the Rams because these offensive linemen are double teaming up to the second level to give this back clear lanes to run behind. So Seagull shoots the lane closest to him. And because he’s such a crazy athlete, he finds his way into the backfield, which gets his back to try to bounce outside on San Francisco, but Seagull’s able to make his way into the backfield, make contact with him, and help bring him down for a pretty minimal gain. Another key part of Seagull’s success in the running game is his ability to be San Francisco’s eraser as their safety. Here, for example, he quickly identifies his running play once again, engages with this wide receiver, uses a pole technique to disengage, and you can say what you want about this tackle, but he stops him right there, really being San Francisco’s eraser, eliminating a much bigger play here. It’s also worth noting he has a versatility to come up and act as San Francisco’s box safety here with the Rams running a similar play to that fourth and one we watched earlier for instance. Seagull once again does a fantastic job of identifying it and with this back bouncing outside Seagull recognizes this, slides over, meets him there and makes a tackle for a three-y gain. Speaking of Seagull’s versatility, as I was alluding to earlier, because he has a background as a quarterback, he can go ahead and man up on tight ends and wide receivers. Here, for example, he’s manned up on this tight end that uses a double hand press technique to disrupt his route. And this entire time, he’s keeping his eyes on this quarterback, which not only helps him not draw the PI as he’s clearly in play for this ball, but it also gives him an indicator Stafford is looking his direction. And as soon as the ball is coming there, it looks like he knows it is. attacks his ball there, nearly gets an interception right there, and in the future, I think it’s just a matter of time before he starts running these the other direction. Seagull’s ability to recognize when the ball is coming and attacking it also makes it so he’s not giving up deep PI penalties. To really illustrate this point, in deep zone coverage, Zagull is able to identify Nua coming, but he’s also playing the ball. So, even though he’s making incidental contact on this play, he doesn’t draw the PI. And while I would like to see him make this interception or actually go up and attack this ball in the future, I am happy how he’s looking back to the quarterback and is in play for a lot of these plays. Seagull also does a nice job of identifying the wide receivers’s routes and then shooting without hesitation in zone coverage. Here on this play, for example, Seagull is responsible for the deep half of this field. But with Matthew Stafford quickly identifying and targeting Puka Nakua, Seagull is able to read this, come up from his safety position, and make the open field tackle for a gain of 11. Seagull also does a nice job in zone coverage being San Francisco’s eraser in a similar way. He’s the eraser in the run game. Here on this play, for example, both Fred Warner and D. Winters think this is a screen, but they read it wrong, leaving San Francisco susceptible to this pass. Seagull though is quick to identify this. So once again is able to come up from his safety position, break down in the open field and make the secure tackle right here on Neu. Once again, in a similar way on a lot of those deep completions Seagull made the tackle on, he was really erasing the much bigger play. On this play, for example, San Francisco’s defense is running cover six with Marqueis Seagull responsible for the deep half of this field. And Vonte Adams on this play is attacking the weakness of this coverage coming back on this little curl route. Maris Seagull though is pretty quick to recognize it. Comes up from his deep coverage on this play. And with Renardo Green missing the tackle, he cleans up and saves a much bigger play here. Outside of his ability as a covered safety, he also has a versatility to be sent on blitzes because he is such an athletic player. And while he doesn’t have a sack yet, I do think Robert Saul is only going to use him more and more in this aspect because of the loss of Nick Bosa. With all these positives to Seagull’s game though, he is a fifthround rookie and pretty new to the safety position. So, he definitely has some areas of concern and some areas I would like to see him continue to improve head forward with one of the most notable areas of concern in my opinion just being his short arms. In the passing game, this makes it a lot more challenging for him to actually break up the pass. Like here against the Rams going against his big body tight end, he has pretty great positioning, but because he doesn’t have the longest arms, he’s not able to break it up here. It’s also worth noting because Seagull is such an aggressive player and a rookie, he’s not going to be right every single time. Sometimes he’s going to take a bad angle or misidentify a route a wide receiver is running. But overall, is he growing? And I think the answer to that is yes. So even though Seagull does have some areas of concern to his game, that’s normal, especially for a fifthround rookie starting in his first year and a player pretty new to the safety position. So headed forward, I only think he’s going to continue to improve and eventually be a Pro Bowl safety. But ultimately, these are just some of my thoughts on Marqueis Seagull after five games so far. And I want to hear your thoughts about San Francisco’s rookie safety. Do you think he has the potential to be a dominant player like I do, or do you think he’s just going to be solid for this team? It would also mean a ton to me if you did enjoy this video if you could go ahead and like and subscribe. It truly helps out the channel a ton. And as always, I hope you guys have a great rest of your
With The San Francisco 49ers wrapping up their fifth game against the Los Angeles Rams, arguably the most underappreciated player on the field was the Rookie Safety Out of Kansas State, Marques Sigle. In this video we breakdown Marques Sigle’s performance and why he changes everything for the San Francisco 49ers and can potentially be their next dominant Safety.

What a great fill in for Malik Mustafa, Krueg said this draft may be one of the greatest drafts of all 49er history ! That's saying something on what gems Coach Saleh found
lets not lie though, bro was getting deep balls caught on him cough cough tutu atwell cough
He wasn't perfect, definitely blew a couple of plays, but I really like how good he has been about diagnosing plays and firing with that elite speed. He can process and move fast. Not just 40 time speed either, he looks fast af playing the game live. Physicality on point. I would like him to put some serious time in with a jugs machine in the off season though lmao. Nah, he's going to get some picks soon, he can definitely close on the ball and put himself in position.
I think collins won 49ers the game when he caused the FF on the 1yard line and then recovered it.
He needs to improve coverage though. He let way too many deep passes get completed.
It's pretty crazy to me that a S that looks this good so early (and with his speed and other physical stats) dropped to the 5th round. He looks like an intelligent player reading run or pass plays. Thanks for the breakdown Wizez I didn't know that he made that game ending 4th down stop!
Super impressed with him…is he perfect,no…but just about every completed pass he is in pretty good position..his tackling is awesome
I love this kid a true Gem
I want to see him be more deliberate when making a tackle and not him getting ran over while in the process of making the tackle more times than not, he's special though, i'm a big fan. I saw some disgruntled sigle fans on a 49ers forum saying that when mustapha comes back sigel might go to the bench, I was like "are you fucking kidding me"? Bye pinnock! I guess they're all caught up in those few pass plays sigle has giving up and not looking at everything is he's doing.
He’s having a better season than Dee Winters. Winters had a bad game against the Rams.
Dude it's okay to say our rookie had a bad game Matthew Stafford targeted him and pick on him all game long and he gave up a ton of yards. He had one Pbu in end zone (he almost picked) but that was a bad game for him. (It's okay tho he's still a rookie and learning) And NO IT WASN'T him that made the stop on 4th and 1 it was Chase Lucas that did he bull rushed in there and hit a WR and TE Sigle just helped at the end so there wasn't a second push to get the RB over so did D-Mo and Collins even Winters jumped on everyone at end to make sure it was over. And NO he didn't watch game film to no that play was coming. (Not saying he doesn't watch game film ) But Sean Mcvay ran that same play on 3rd and 1 and got the 1st down. Salah knew that play was coming and put everyone in the position to blow it up. He did good on that play (which shows lil signs of development) and he had a couple of other good plays like the pass break up in end zone. But Rams picked on him all game long and pretty much had there way with him. We're about to get Malik Mustafa back so that S#it won't continue to happen he'll still get snaps but it won't be as much so we don't continue to throw him in fire.
Sigle is the truth‼️
Thumbs up 👍Wizez…..he is the next man up and doing it IGYB
He was getting burned out by the rams all night
Wonder how he would do at nickel
I wish they’d let him just play safety.
Do you think Mustapha could solve the coverage issues we have? And who is he gonna replace?
This kid is playing great, Sigle/Mustafa, gonna be a great pair!! Thanks for the tape Wizez!!
He been get picked on all season he a rook hit or miss same way with hufanga but sigel is a hitter gave up lot plays devanta Adam's but that should elevate his game next level but if the front don't get more pressure on the QB the DB.s going be in 4 a very long season im very pleased with the youth if it was under a different coordinator I be worried but saleh got them playing lights out im sure gus Bradley got some input on it
🤫…. WHEN I TELL YAH WE GOT WEAPONS…. WEEEE GOOOTTT WEAPONS ON THE NINERS SQUAD.. BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL
