NHL Pre-Season Toronto Maple Leafs vs Detroit Red Wings Full Game October 4 2025

I’m a came from the ground up just like I’m lettuce and I know you let us make the color we came with propellers I don’t go back and forth in no arguments cannot be passive I’m dominant I play aggressive like domin Ding like me. I’ll rise to the sky. See the power that keeps me alive. I’m never down. I was in my zone. [Applause] Sweat Detroit, Michigan, where it’s the last night of hockey that doesn’t count. The Leafs are four nights away from their season opener against Montreal tonight. Final tuneup, final chance for a couple of bubble players to make an impression, including Nick Robertson. More on him in a moment. He will be on the top line tonight. Looks like Eastston Cowan will start the season with the big club. He’s in the lineup tonight as well. And they will face most of the Detroit regulars, including captain Dylan Larkin tonight. As we say, hey gang, welcome to a Saturday night edition of East Preseason hockey. James Slie alongside Cheryl Pounder and Darren Dger. I know most of you are emotionally exhausted from watching the Jays. And by the way, thank you for turning off a baseball playoff game in the eighth inning to watch preseason hockey. It’s It’s 9 to1. It’s over. It’s time. It’s hockey time. Uh tonight, a chance for you all to breathe a little bit easier. The stakes not quite as high as a playoff baseball game tonight, but they are for a couple players trying to make that final impression on the bosses. For more on that, Gordon Miller and Mike Johnson. guys. And James, stop me if you’ve heard this before, but once again, Nick Robertson finds himself on the roster bubble and he knows it. He’s talked about it. In fact, he almost appears to be comfortable with the idea that he once again is maybe in the lineup, maybe not. Maybe has a line to play on, maybe not. And we know what he can do. And when you think you’re supposed to be a goal scorer, if you look at his goals per minute, he actually scores really pretty well for the Toronto Maple Leafs. but he just has never quite been able to latch onto a consistent long-term assignment that he gets a long runway regardless of how he plays. We’ve seen him score in the regular season. We’ve seen him score in the playoffs. We’ve seen him score in the preeason. And one more game for him to say, you know what, I don’t think he’s going to go on waiverss. I don’t think he’s going to go anywhere but on the team, but try to get into the lineup. Maybe a really good performance with Scotty Lton’s injury can get him there. And James, the preseason, it’s time to get your timing coordination down. And MJ and I have our coordination right down pat. Didn’t get the matching suit memo night with the purple and the blue stripes. I’m sorry. Drags and I and Cheryl did not comply with that. Uh the lease lineup tonight about as far away from the opening lineup Wednesday as you could possibly get. Only three or four guys who you will see in that opener against Montreal. Now David Camp cleared waiverss yesterday. So that gives them flexibility. They can send him down. So besides Robertson who the guys talked about, who else is trying to solidify a spot? Well, certainly when you look at that roster, there’s two other guys in that forward group that I’d be looking at. That would be Eastston Cowan and Cali Yarnro. Cuz there’s no question about it, there’s internal competition, but it is in the bottom six. And for Cali Yarmcroke, you know, every opportunity is about seizing the opportunity. Obviously, health reasons last year only played 19 games and maybe with Len out, this changes the landscape of the lineup. But for Cali Yarncroak, he has got to take advantage. He can be a plugandplay versatile style of player, but the time is now for him if he wants to start in that opening lineup. And of course, you know, it’s real difficult or maybe it’s somewhere else that he winds up going. Well, you mentioned the Lton injury out likely a few weeks with that foot injury. How does that affect who starts? Well, it definitely does. And as the guys just talked about, maybe that creates opportunity, more opportunity for Nick Robertson or again Cali Arnro or David Camp as he comes back in the lineup. We’ll have to wait and see. But it does have an influence and an impact on Eastston Cowan because Greg Barub would have preferred to start the year and East Cowan’s, you know, branch into the National Hockey League regular season with Scott Lton and Steven Lorent. You know, just teach him a little bit more about the grinding side of the the game. you know, encourage him to go into the the tougher areas and be less confused out there because there’s still an element of junior hockey that eventually is played out in time whether that’s at the NHL level or with the Marlies. We’ll find out soon. Simo Benois on the top pairing tonight. Craig Bub has said that he’s going to play on his off side this season as a defenseman. How does that impact his game? Well, it’s difficult, right? It’s it’s a transition you have to make, especially if you play on your on side. His natural side would be his left. And I’m kind of surprised he’s playing the left tonight to be honest with you because in preseason you want to assimilate him, get him on that right side because it is different. Listen, there’s two things for me. When you’re in the offensive zone, it’s easier to walk the line when you are an off on your off side when it is a direct pass. But in your own zone, which has to be Benois’s bread and butter, now all of a sudden he’s pushed to vulnerable spots. And guess what? You’re managing the puck on your backhand. So now all of a sudden those exit becomes a little bit more difficult. And even the way your eyes face a puck, it’s a little bit different. So, you know, you have to really get the reps in that spot to be able to get comfortable on that offside. Dennis Hilde has had a busy preseason with Joe Wool’s absence, and there’s no timeline still for Joe Wool’s return to this team. So, Hillbe is going to start the season as the backup, which is not what the Leafs wanted, but an opportunity for Hill to be. You’re right. Uh, and the Maple Leafs of course remain hopeful and optimistic that Joall will be able to return, but the likelihood is it will take a little bit more time. So, they like the way that Dennis Hilderby has looked to this point in training camp and the preeason. Another big opportunity for him, but you’ve got Anthony Stars who is now the bonafide number one for the Toronto Maple Leafs. So, he’ll get more time. I thought it was a bit of a shrewd move to bring in James Rymer on the PTO. Now, there’s no guarantee that he’s going to be signed to a full contract, but you do have that insurance policy and a little bit of backup to the backup, if you will, but they like Hill to be and how he’s responded. And again, no update on Rhymer. Wish him the best and hope he’s back at a certain point here. By the way, Detroit, as I mentioned, this this Leafs lineup, as you saw, is really thin tonight. Detroit has pretty much all of its regulars going tonight. So you’re going to see Larkin and Raymond and Patrick Kane and Mo Cider and so on and so forth in the final preseason game of the season for the Leafs. Their sixth and last before it opens up Wednesday for real. One more break and then Gordon MJ have the drop of the puck from Detroit. [Music] Waterfront here in Detroit. Winds are on the left. The Red Wings used to play right there in the middle of your screen of Joe Loose Arena. But now we’re at Little Caesars Arena for the last preseason game of the year for both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings will meet here a week from tonight after both teams open their season against the Montreal All Canadians. The Leafs on Wednesday, Detroit on Thursday. East Cowan Mike plays in his fifth of Toronto’s six preseason games this year. Probably didn’t want to play in this one. had made the team and the injury to lot and the shuffling of the deck with camp on waiverss forces him in the lineup last minute. So, one more chance to show the coaches that they he is ready for the challenge of playing in the NHL against a pretty NHL lineup for the Red Wings. This is very close to what Detroit will ice in that opener on Thursday night. The Red Wings have missed the playoffs each of the last nine seasons after making the playoffs for 25 straight prior to that. Lucas Raymond has that stripped away. brought in by Haynes moving in. He rolled that wide to the goal. And we’ll see if the strange pattern continues for Toronto. Their A lineup is 02 and one at home in the preseason. Their B lineups are 2 and 0. I’m expecting Toronto play really well. Lots of energy. If it holds true, they should win. Here’s Dylan Larkin. Feeds that back and EMTT Finny. One of the big training camp stories for Detroit. Has to go off a stick. Up and out of play. And so for Detroit, it’s another year where they are counting on things turning around. They now have the second longest running playoff drought in the NHL, of course, behind the Buffalo Sabres. And Steve Aerman’s been at the helm for quite some time now. The sense is they were close last year. They’ve been close a couple years in a row. Yeah, they finished by six, finished out by six last year. The year before that, they tied to the last spot, lost the tiebreaker to Washington. The goalending of John Gibson is what they hope it will be. I think that should be the difference. 22nd in goals for last year, 21st in goals against. Guess where they finished in the overall standings? 21st. You look at all their stats, they were in that range. 21, 22, 23 in just about everything except for the power play last year. Yeah, they’ve tied the league lead with 64 power play goals. Here’s Patrick Kane closing in on Mike Madano for the alltime point lead for US players. is 31 behind to start the regular season. That pass from Jacob got disrupted by Marco Casper. Henry Thr back to pick it up for Toronto acquired from San Jose in the Ryan Reeves trade. This is Detroit’s eighth preseason game. No more of that next year. Down to four mercifully. Down to four. By the way, there was a question we asked about split squad games. They will each count for a game next to their play. There’s a rebound in front and that’s knocked away from Matthew Barbellini. Now, back at the plate, pinning a shot that got through and the save is made by Gibson. Gibson acquired from Anaheim for Peter Morazzic. A second and a fourth round pick. Detroit takes on the last two years of his 8year deal. had a bounceback year last year, a 912 safety. She was under 900 each of the two years previous to that. Morris Siders flies that back down to the Toronto zone. Back around the boards chipped head by Mason Appleton who was signed by Detroit in the offse trying to set it up. Apple moves it back to Ben Sherro. slides that back to Ser with a shot off the side of the goal. He’s had a strong hand for Toronto. 944 save percentage in two appearances. Here’s Sherro with it and Sh feeds it towards the goal. Rasmus gets a stick on that and nobody steers it away. Try to cut that one upstairs if you’re Rasmus. Not just tip it, but elevate it. That puck deflects into the Toronto bench. So the biggest change for Detroit this season is John Gibson and net. They’ve been chasing a number one goalender. Gibson had some great moments early in his career, but as you mentioned, sort of run out of gas a little bit before being a bit better last night last year. But the thought being that getting away from Anaheim would rejuvenate him emotionally where he was just beat down by Anaheim despite his success in the career rankings. All the losing got to him. Maybe being on a more competitive team this year gets him back to that high level that he had earlier in his career. Detroit’s been in the bottom third of goals against for nine consecutive years. That’s the nine straight years out of the playoffs. Not always their goalie’s fault, but they certainly have used a lot of them to try to find an answer. Here is Finny with it. EMTT Finny a seventh round pick in 2023. Looks like his name is going to be an ink on the opening night roster for the Red Wings. had a very strong camp after a great year last year for the Cambos Blazers of the Western Hockey League. You’re playing with Larkin and Raymond in the final preseason game. You are giving yourself a look. Jacob Bernard Docker to Dylan Larkin who snaps out ahead. Dylan Larkin is the only active Detroit Redwing who is a played a playoff game for them and b has played at the Joe Lewis Arena. Leti plays that back to Matt Benning. Benning lob that towards the goal. Got a true Gibson save. left the area back on it. Needs that back of a long point shot taken by Kate Weber to flex wide. [Music] So Sandine Pelican knocked that back. Number 44 for Detroit. Sandine Pelica highly touted prospect for the Red Wings. Was drafted 17th overall in 2023. Had a great year last year in the Swedish League. Has played three world juniors for the Swedes. He’s close. The question is, is he better served in Grand Rapids or the American League? And there’s That’s not That is a tough call. They’re going to call it offside. Thank you. The puck of the player skate at the bench. That’s not too many men when it hits a player going off. That would have been a very tight one foot rule. Greg Ruby wants a little clarification. What’s happening? Why blow the whistle then? Just let it roll on. I think that’s a sentiment a lot will have for the rest of this game. Why blow the whistle? to just keep it moving. Coaches, players, they want to just finish this game and get onto the real thing. It will be very different next season with just four preseason games. A much shorter runway for players to prove themselves. Coach will be happy. They want to get down to their team and get down to their coaching their group and not managing schedules. [Applause] You must have had eight 10 of these players tonight who have been called up out of the Marley’s camp to get back for this game. The Leaf lineup is legal. You have to have a certain number of players who and goenders who meet the qualification of games played and the Leafs just qualify. And one of the new faces for Toronto is a familiar one here in Detroit. Derek Lone was the head coach here for four seasons. Bright hockey mind. when you want to talk X’s and nose with him. He’s got to come in and his primary responsibility with Toronto is the penalty kill which basing on last year’s numbers in Detroit. Not very good, right? Last of the penalty kill for the Red Wings for the second time in four years. So he’s Mark Zavar still runs the power play alone was replaced Tom Mlen and Mlen you see the uptick in everything except really the penalty kill right was equally poor under Tom Mlen but the results much better goals up goals against down Leafs have been bottom half in penalty killing the last couple of years had a real tough run last season over the 10ame stretch as goes back in a Michael Brick Bard the Norwegian who played in Sweden last year’s another first round pick. The Reds are very high on it. Seems like they’ve dusted off the pipeline from Sweden here in Detroit again. It fed them well during the glory years and company bonds in on and on. No fun to play against at all. you throw the whole night, you wouldn’t touch the puck. Just accept that in the night shots would be 40 to 20 and your goalie would have to be your first star. And if that was the case, you had a chance. Reblings went 3 to1 in Toronto on Thursday, outshot them 42 to 19. I was at that game and they peppered Toronto. And again, that was Detroit’s at best a minus lineup. But more importantly, that was Toronto starting 18 skaters. Simon Edmonson back forth the big defenseman at 6’6. Missed the first two weeks of camp. Bernard Docker who finished the year last year with Buffalo plays that around. He was traded there in the Josh Norris deal that sent Dylan Cousins to Ottawa. Here’s Mu along the boards. Back to Appleton. That shot deflects high by Bernard Ber for Sodom. down to Rasmusen. Spins off the board, plays that back down to Soderbl by Dakota Mermis. The incentive for the players on the road team is hot. Show yourself against an NHL lineup. That shot by Evansson was blocked and played back out. That was too many men by Barbius. There we go. See, that one was too many men. They got him. 1306 to go here. in a scoreless first in Detroit. We’ll be back a week from Tuesday with our first regular season Leafs hockey broadcast. The Predators and the Maple Leafs, Nashville, the offseason champions in 2024. Did not get it to translate into the regular season last year, but Stephen Stan goes in company hoping for better things. And the Maple Leafs go to the play to the power play here as Detroit’s called for too many. This one was Dylan Larkin jumping out on the ice and you see S. Rasmusen stepping off and Larkin touches it and gets in the way. So that was one too many and he was way in the middle of the ice. Rasmus was on the bench. So a power play where Cowan and Robertson should be featured. Here is Cowan. Drops that back to Heras. Shoots and a glove save made by Gibson. And you talk about the incentive for road performance on a lineup like like the Leafs have that Nick Roberts and Eston don’t probably get on the power play if it’s a regular lineup. So they are both power players. They’re both guys who want to show that they can do that and they’ll get the opportunity to do so to start the first unit tonight. [Music] [Music] Robertson 15 goals last year for Toronto. When you talk about goals per 60 minutes played, he is amongst the team leaders at five on five the last few seasons. He just doesn’t get enough 60s. Gibson out to play it. Moved back by Cal to Mermis and across to Robertson. Nick Robertson spins that back to Mermis to Cowan. Houston Cowan who has been receiving blowing reviews from his head coach this week. Takes the return pass from Mermis. Puck across to Robertson. Missed two and Sherro gets it off the glass and just out. Appleton brings it back out and slides that back down to the Toronto zone. Here comes Robertson back the other way. Inside a minute to go on the Toronto power play. Robertson down to Haynes that goes off the stick of Bernard Docker into the glove of John Gibson. East Cowan’s an interesting case because he’s an immensely talented player who produced offensively with the London Knights at historic rates. But to make the team this year, he had to show he could play without the puck. He could play more of a checking role. You see him on the power play. This is much more normal for him. But that’s that’s the known commodity. They know he can make plays. The question is, can he play without the puck well enough to keep him in the lineup? And he’s shown so far that he can. Significantly stronger than he was a year ago as well. Maturity, puberty will do that to you when you’re a teenager. Loft back down the ice by Lin. Lin in his 11th season with Detroit. Very good player. consistently very good. Sometimes the question around Detroit is is he an elite number one. Alex Knander winds in for Toronto. Knander, feeds that back in front of the shot that was blocked. Let the area had his stick knocked out of his hands. He was calling for a penalty. Final seconds now. The Toronto power play sent down the ice by Albert Johansson. Two shots in that power play for Toronto remains scoreless here in the opening period. No shots against for the Maple Leafs yet as they’ve had the puck the first half of the first period. Teams will play each other four times this year. The season series will be over on January 21st. All four meetings in the first half of the year. Final took three of the four last year and is 225 and three in the last 30 meetings with the Red Wings. Well, the years where the Red Wings struggle and are not good defensively, the Leafs were not a good team to play against. Well, there was a 10 spot the one night. Oh, Michael Bazetta having a quick little chat with Ras Muc. Did not find a taker at center ice. Another guy trying to make a mark in his own way. Michael Bazetta. We had that knocked down by Marco Ceret. Sends it inside the goal and Kane put that wide. Cowen trying to chip that out. It’s on the line and Bernard Dcker had it picked off by Quill and Benning snaps ahead to Letiari and that goes over the glass and out of play. No score here in the first from Detroit in their 100th anniversary season. The message from the coaching staff before this game is whatever you do well, let’s see that. And so for Michael Pizzett, who’s trying to find traction with the organization and in the lineup, that means being physical, being an agitator, maybe fighting if you have to, and he’s going out there trying to find whatever he can get to to get something going for him and his team. He got the two-year deal. Well, it’s a one-way deal, but if you look at his usage in camp and the lines he’s been on, he’s never really had an opportunity to play in the top 12 forwards. He was always going to be an extra, if he’s able to make the team at all. Picked off by Robertson busting in. Nick Robertson with the steel, a backhand shot, and Gibson makes the stop on that dash by Nick Robertson. This is what you want to see out of Robertson. defense, active stick, and show me some speed. And you love to see him get away from the much ranger Edmonson and able to get a backhand in on John Gibson, but in a good defensive position, attacks the puck, turns it over, creates a chance for himself. That’s well done by Nick Robertson, who not for nothing, he’s wearing an A tonight, which is pretty cool experience. We hope the hope the trading card companies are here. Get that photo. I got a couple with a A on my jersey for Toronto. Yep. From an exhibition game in Hamilton, I think. James flips that back to Simone Penois who’s back in the lineup. Played on Thursday as well after missing the start of training camp. Here’s Robertson back with it. That pass ahead for Yarnro. Picked up by Mermis. circles in with Robertson with the plays offside at the Detroit line. So, Simone Benois back in the lineup. He’s going to play tonight. He’s got to get up and running. What I find interesting though is that he’s likely to play on his off side with Oliver Ecman Larson. And yet here in tonight’s game, he’s playing on his strong side. And if it’s me, hard be for me to tell Craig Ruba to coach. I’m putting him on his off side. like let him continue to work on the spacing and the visuals of playing over there because he was on the strong side for most of the season last year and he’s still making that adjustment. I don’t know why you would want to waste a game situation when he could be practicing for what he will do next week. You look at the pre game pounder talked about the challenges that presents chance of the shot. The scoreard takes the feed from JT Comfort and Detroit takes a one- nothing lead. Michael Bransk Negard has his third preseason goal in seven games. Nice play here as a long drive. Henry Frun has got to trust Latierryi. Fr cannot go over and commit to Coner. Just take the guy in the back door. He’s wide open. No chance whatsoever for Hill to be. Let Lati check Confer into the corner and he takes a weak backand fine. But don’t give up the back door emptyer Franc. And continues his tor run at the scoring title. He’s now tied for the preseason lead in scoring. Right. Like when you play seven games. Listen, we need a name for that award. I want to give it out every year. But he’s got to play. He’s got to score himself on the team. Interesting. You know, he went from Sweden’s all Spence in their second league to the top league last year. Only scored five goals in 42 games. He can really shoot it. We’ve seen him at the World Junior and the World Championship for Norway. He can really shoot a puck. He can absolutely hammer a puck. And you get him in this situation, he might play on this line with Comp and Comper and him, two veteran guys, sturdy players who are also decent offensively. It’s in a really good spot for him to start his NHL career. You remember two years ago we were in Sweden. The Leafs were there. Detroit was there. Ottawa Minnesota as well. And on an off day, Steve Eisman and his scouts drove up to Bora from Stockholm. Remember that? So it’s about a 4hour drive. It was, you know, winter. But they went to watch transcard play. He has the ability to shoot the puck already at an NHL elite level. Just 19 years of age shoot which is wide. Because he’s from Europe. He can play in the minors no problem. So he can go up and down as needed for Detroit. He’ll be 20 tomorrow. By the way, happy belated birthday to you. Thank you very much. Yesterday and coach Todd Mlen, same birthday. There you go. Sandine Pelica shot that was blocked by Cedric Pare and Sandine Pelican back with it. The soda blow. Appleton rings it around for Johansson. Feeds that back to Casper. Shoots and the glove save made by Hildy. And it’s funny how you hear stories like that board where you know oneoff road trip. you see somebody you like and there’s Steve Eisermanman who goes and finds Michael Brad knee guard who is the highest drafted Norwegian player ever and it’s one of those ones where you sneak up to Mora and you hope nobody else sees you don’t want it to get out like why was Detroit there why do they have five executives and scouts watching them in an all sense in a second division Swedish game because they had their eye on Neguard Rante Ngard Detroit by the way has cornered the market on players with hyphenated names Sandine Pelica, Franczac Negard, and Bernard Docker all in the lineup tonight. So, the Red Wings waiting for a while to get their first shot. They’ve taken a one- nothing lead here as Kane has a look and shoots. He’ll be saved. Rebound cleared by Meers for the line, but not out. Edmonson back to Kane. Kane shoots. That was blocked in front by Thron. Seven to go here in the opening period. Punted ahead by Robertson. Goes in on Bernard Gawker. They collide in the corner and Robertson wins that battle for the puck. Centers it. Bouncing puck. Gibson down. That’s cleared away by De Brinken. And Robertson winds back and shoots and Gibson makes a stop on. Robertson is jumping here in the first period. Wow. That’s well done by Nick Robertson showing some speed. A little jam in the corner. You know, the coaching staff if they saw more of this one-on-one physical confrontation wins to get puck possession that would go a long way and help in his case to get into the on the lineup. Creates an opportunity. Takes a quick transition and goes one on three. Backs up and gets a pretty good wrist in on John Gibson. I think Robertson has been noticeable start the game. Here is Finny with it. beginning with a seventh round pick. Detroit bouncy puck for Cowan. Knocked away by Cider. There’s Krillin. Pinners. Cowan back across. A penalty coming down. It’s going to Detroit. So the Leafs are going back on the power play as the hooking call will go against the Red Wings. This is how you beat bigger guys. Tom Mlullen doesn’t like it because Mo Cider was a little bit lazy out of the corner. Detroit 53 two-minute minor hooking and he got beat by his fellow 53 out of the corner. And now Ethan Cowan can’t outmuscle Moider but he can out move him and he spins off a check gets the stick under the arm draws the penalty and creates an opportunity. You take that hit you slide out of it and that’s the sort of increase in strength and size that K has shown in camp. Had two shots in their first power play as it sent back down the ice. And away comes Robertson again. Robertson slides it back across. Haynes feeds that to Cowan and the pass draws Hermas back out. Cowan back to Robertson. Ames feeds that back. Cowan spins back along the boards and out of the top and bobble back. [Applause] Hayes back in across the line. Got a straight up there by Sherro. Cowan feeds that back down to Yarncro. Also wearing an alternate A tonight. Sherro in for Johansson. [Applause] Alex Knander pins away from Andrew Cop. Still on it. Knander pivots back away. 101 had 23 goals last year for the Marlies in the AHL as Murmur shoots. Bouncing puck and front kick with a Gibson and Copper sends it back down. Five to go here in the opening period. Thrand look out. That’s off a stick up and out of play. Another power play without too much being generated. Ethan Cowan had the puck an awful lot and you could see if you ever watched a London Knights power play. It was very freelancy where he would just sort of do whatever he wanted to do and skate wherever he wanted and the talent would find a way to create pucks in the net. Didn’t quite and doesn’t quite work at that at this level. Was a bit better checking you couple pucks over that last sequence. Lander feeds that down. Yes. But the fact that the coaching staff will be paying attention to that is a good sign, right? They I mean Yeah. They’re invested in you getting better and being a everyday player. And the fact that he’s feeling more confident in this game to sort of play with a puck in a more creative manner. Also not a bad sign. Snider back on the ice. No shots in that power play. Remains one- nothing Detroit here late in the first period. pass it at center ice right to Shaw. Drops it off to Carbellini. Winds in has time and shoots. Bounces back in front. Score. Logan Shaw the rebound has tied the game at one. [Music] [Applause] And Logan Shaw, who has spent eight years in the NHL, but hasn’t played in the league in the last three years, makes his presence felt. You like the controlled stretch, turns into a three-on-ree, and then you win a battle in front and Shaw bumps Sherro. Puck cars around, but a nice little ladder play. Barbellini goes laterally, takes advantage of Patrick Kane not closing on him. And then when you go bang around in front of the net, you might not touch a puck. But when Shaw bumps Sherro, it causes the puck to deflect off Sherro’s stick and what would have been a clear now becomes a bobble and he finds it and stuffs home the rebound on the back door. Logan Shaw might have been the guy who put this lineup over the legal limit with his time in the NHL the last several seasons. Last played in the NHL four years ago for Ottawa in the 2122 season. I remember him that he was quite good on faceoffs. Yeah. Been sort of a diligent checker. Been around Florida, Anaheim, Montreal, Winnipeg, and Ottawa. Wave back to Sandine Pelos. He goes to Larkin with a shot kicked out by Hildy. You see James Rymer in the second half of this game this evening as Johansson centers it. That’s knocked away by Yarn. [Music] Raymond feeds it back to Lark and a shot that goes off a skate. Bounces wide. Johansson back around to Emmany behind the play. Ben Pen was tied up. We got a penalty for the hold. Tied up Lucas Raymond. So the Redskins got their first power play with under three and a half to go here in the first. 1-1 the score here in Detroit and the Red Wings going to the power play. Detroit will head to the power play tied at one Ben picked up the hold on Lucas Raymond and the power play was a good place for Detroit to be last year tied for the league lead in number of power play goals. huge reason why they went on the strong run under Todd McCloone. And what they had in common with Ottawa is they struggled five on five. If you leave the league of power play goals and are not near the league league in actual goals that tells you all you need your five on five. Detroit was 28th in the league in five on five scoring. Got two here. This works in short-handed. He’s got Shaw with him and the centering pass was broken up by Cider and Raymond back on it for Cider [Music] shimmy there out of his own knows his way around the power play for Raymond. Back to Larkin. Larkin lines that down to the bracket. Led Detroit last year with 39 goals. Just missing a third 40goal season. Raymond out of the break, walks out. He’ll be down, but still loose. Look up and hit the linesman. That hit linesman. Kyle Flemington flush. He’s seemingly okay. Larkin up for Kane. Banks it back to side of that pass broken up by Quillin. Now taken back by De Brinken. Lucas Raymond at the line by Meyers. That’s brought up by Yarn Croak. He’s got Robertson moving in. Robertson teasing him and shoot scores. Nick Robertson short-handed goal and Toronto retakes the lead. How about Nick Robertson here in the first? Love to see it. Not pouting, not worrying about what’s going to happen tomorrow. Just going out playing. Penalty killing which you never seen. Good turnover there by Meyers. He jumps off the bench and an old school slapper which you do not see very often in today’s NHL. Quick one and puts it right through John Gibson. He likes five hole on rushes. It’s a It’s a pattern when you watch Mc Robertson play often enough. He loves to shoot five hole on rush opportunities like that. Boy, did everyone put that one through cleanly. What a period for Nick Robertson. So the short-handed goal gives Toron the lead and Sandine Pelica chips out ahead. Casper gets the return pass from Comfort. Sandine Pelica back to Andrew C. Sandine Pelic Nar with the shot that was blocked by Weber. Franz Negard for Casper wins that battle for the puck and shoots. Weber knocked it down. Can’t clear it out. Franic Nigard back with it. feeds it back to Sandine Pelica, but he bubble it. The puck comes out like the Shleftia power play from last year with Sandine Pelica and Branch Egard. I have to look and see how good it was, but out of the box is Benwis. So Toronto emerges with a short-handed goal. Detroit without a shot in that power play. Leafs have a two-1 leader. We’ll see if this trend continues of the so-called beast on the road. Results in behind the go on try Hill to be the save. Apple feeds that back in the final minute now in the opening period. Edmonson back across to Apple. A shot goes off a stick. Up and out of play. Robertson out there short-handed. Yarn croak picks up an assist. another guy trying to establish his foothold in the lineup. And Nick Robertson is still a young player, but it feels like he’s been around a long time. He’s only 24, so he he’s seen some stuff like he’s been on the bubble and he’s been sent up and down. He’s been scratched at times. He missed playoff games. He’s had really good preseasons, too. And he’s also scored a lot in preeason. But as you mentioned, on a per 60, at a per minute basis, his production per goals is really strong relative to a high-scoring Maple Leaf team. So in his mind, he must be thinking, I’m doing what I’m supposed to do, which is score offensively. Trust is a big word, right? Yeah. Those moments of like knocking guys off the puck or playing good defense in neutral zone, that’s the stuff that will earn him the trust. It’s not the nice shots with the five hfold. It’s the defense. It’s the board work that the coaching staff will be looking for. Away comes Cowan and across the line with Shaw. Eastston Cowan flips that back ahead as Cider goes back. Bouncy puck on the slot. Goes to Finny. Chips it back out. Time winds down here in the first period. Cop on it for Finny. Needs it across. Cop with a shot at the horn. The save made by Hildabby. But Toronto gets goals from Shaw and Robertson. to take a 2-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes as we send you to James Duffy and the panel. [Music] [Music] He’s joining the panel with Cheryl Pounder and Darren Drager. We’ll spend a little bit of time on this game, but more on the projected Wednesday night opening lineup for the Leafs. And is this a season Stlars becomes a truly elite NHL goalie? The quiz is forthcoming. A one- nothing lead on Michael Bransk Negard’s third of the preseason, but Logan Shaw came back to tie it up. And then Nick Robertson struck short-handed with his second of the preseason to make it a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Let’s join Mark Masters. Gourd. The Leafs are flipping excited about the Blue Jays run. So, the team’s ace social media crew had the players show off some bat flips earlier this week. Nick Robertson, who scored tonight, said he’s excited to go to the game tomorrow. He’s never been to a Major League playoff game. It sounds like quite a few Leafs will be down at the dome tomorrow. There’s been some debate inside the dressing room about who would be the best baseball player on the Leafs. Matthew N today bringing up the name Kelly Yarro because he drives the ball the furthest when the team gets on the golf course. But Anthony Stallar says it’s got to be Austin Matthews who once went deep during a batting practice cameo. Guys, Austin Matthews has some pretty decent hand eye coordination. Nick Robertson not bad in that first period with the the shorty and puck battles won. again when you’re trying to gain the trust and trying to make yourself an option and worth remembering if not Toronto somewhere else somewhere else right there are pro scouts here tonight 31 teams are watching this game that are not Toronto and if he happens to be available for roster reasons if he happens to be on waiverss he will not clear Nick Robertson at this point start the second period five on five here’s Ben Sherro with it. Ali Yarn knocked that down. Picked off by Haynes and played back in with eight of their first 11 at home in October. Very homeheavy schedule. They don’t travel anywhere that’s more than a 2-hour flight away until the first week of December when they play in Florida, which is exactly where you want to go in the first week of December. So it works out well. Now they’ll pay for it in the second half. Three long west coast trips. There is Bernard Der. Back to Patrick Kane. Kane to Bernard Docker. Long shot goes off the leg of Casper. Casper will break up your last year. Score 19 times for Detroit has notified him as the number two center with the Red Wings. play the second half of the season between Kane and Dbrink which is going to help your point totals for sure. Edmonson moves that ahead for Dbrink. Drops that back for Bernard Der with a shot. A good pass save made by Hilde. Edmonson ranges back to pick it up to center ice to Kane. Looks for Brinken. Brick shoots. That’ll be the stop and he corrals the rebound. to break that involved in a couple quick chances as Casper gets tangled up in front with Matietti. Casper made his NHL debut against the Leafs in April 2023. And as you mentioned, Hillbe with a good stats in Trin so far to break an offensive player. You can almost see him wondering, do I pass this to Bernard Docker or do I just shoot this myself? judging my finishing skills with his finishing track record. Just pass it off and Hillby makes a nice save. [Music] So Hansen feeds it across and Sand Dean Pel with a rocket to Hillby fights off. Hilly’s got to think if it goes over his head it’s over the net, right? Geometrically it has to be unless he’s lying down. Johansson a shot that goes off of skate and wide. Johansson back around the sand pel for Conford. We see Conford back. Albert Johansson walking in. Johansson shoots. That was blocked and Krillin banks back ahead for let out with Cal. Skate play for a run. He’s crawling off or getting dragged off by Phillip Myers. Myers gives him a toe now. Pop back with it. Banks it back around. You can’t shoot a puck or shoot a stick towards someone, but you can tot them off the ice apparently still now in the net. As he took care of that long point shot taken by Benning was blocked. Moved back up by Soderblow. Weber across to Betty and Sherro moves it back in. The great celebrary season legendary franchise was 25 years in a row. They made the playoffs. They won the Stanley Cup four times with the President’s Trophy six times. They were the marquee franchise 90s and 2000s. They won a playoff series since 2013. Well, you got a quarter century of excellence. You can deal with a little bit of a drought, but it had just about enough of it. Beautiful building. It was empty for a little bit a few years ago. It’s back up and appropriately full now. Steal by Lucas Raymond. spins that back for Bernard Docker. Speeds it back down to Larkin. Evansson to Larkin. Drops it back. Bernard Der shot that goes wide and Lin back with it to Raymond. Looks back to Larkin. Offset back to Raymond. Long stop by Raymond. def wide as Edmonson has it back down to Larkin who the face of the frustration of Detroit fans he’s from here played college hockey here playing in Grand Rapids his entire hockey career in the state of Michigan here’s Raymond back with it wraps around and shoots good stuff rebound the save on that and put the rebound away Edmonson back for Bernard Der what Kane waits for a change to be completed. Patrick Kane bangs that back to Edmonson to Kane. Long shot deflects wide and Pelican moves it back to Casper. And Pelican to Edmonson coming up on three minutes. two she scores and Patrick King ties it up [Music] as Detroit just wow throw down. [Applause] [Music] He still can finish the puck as it was a twominute long sequence. Two full forward lines for Detroit rule through the same five defenders for Toronto and they just got caught straight legging tired reaching gaps and Patrick Kane attacks downhill quick hands flick and even though Hillbee’s 6’6 over the shoulder bar down is enough to tie the game for Patrick Kane. 21 goals last year second straight 20 goal year. Remember he had the hip surgery a couple of years ago. It wasn’t clear he’d be able to come back. Ribings took a chance on him and it’s paid off nicely. He’s been a regular contributor for this team. De Brink have that great chemistry going back to the Chicago days where Debrink started. And Patrick Kane’s got a couple important things he wants to do this year. One, become the all-time leading American player. He’s what, 38 behind Brett Hall. You’ll get him there for sure if he stays healthy. and he’s talked about wanting to play in the Olympics again. Now, it’ll be he’ll be hardressed to make the Olympic team. America are just that good, but it is something out there for him to think about. So, you saw Brett Hall on that list and there’s a a long-standing conversation with that. Hall was actually born in Canada. American born players deflected in this section of Hill Debate. American born. He’s chasing Madano. American identified. He’s chasing Hall. He’s got to get them both. So, he gets to celebrate two times as we get another scrum developing after the whistle. 504 of the second period. What will be nice when he has the record? There won’t be any sort of Yeah, but he was born in Canada, right? Patrick Kane is American, has played for America. And see Nick Robertson get tripped up by Bransard. Almost accidentally draws Luke Ames reaction. Haven’t seen a ton of this stuff in the Leaf games. Chippy sort of physical fighting like way we’ve seen it in some other games. We got one eye on the Ottawa Montreal game tonight with thinking with Curtis McDermad in the lineup for Ottawa. We might see some fireworks, but nothing doing so far. Three minor penalties in that game so far. Something crazy game I would play. sets back down the ice and Gibson appears to track across. We expect to see James Rhymer in the second half of this game for Toronto. It’s got to be something going full circle with the Leafs on the PTO earlier in the week. Block moves in. Moved on the puck by Vermas. Docker feeds that to Appleton. up to left now. Cider with the contracts flying around the NHL. You think a guy like Cider signed for under $9 million and he is all these guys are now deals. Steals on Trun as he was taken in by Ras Mus. That’ll be a penalty on Detroit. and the Toronto Maple Leafs in a two- two game. We’ll go to the power play here in the second period in Detroit. 100th anniversary season and in January they will add to their list of retired numbers when they raised number 91 of Sergey Federov to the Raptors in a game against Carolina who signed him to an offer sheet back in 1998 which created some bad blood between him and the Red Wings but they’ll put that to rest. The Red Wings have a very narrow criteria to get your number retired. You must be in the Hall of Fame. Kalan for young Krogan back in front that’s tap wide by Robertson almost had his second now Hermes a shot that’s bumped by Gibson got to think that Pavle Datsuk will have his number 13 retired at some point you’d think so and Sergey Federof was one of the most talented players of that generation play defense a regular shift on defense while also being the MVP as a centerman Scotty Bowman said that he’s the only player he’s ever seen who can play forward and defense equally Well, straight out. Yeah, I think so. Yep. That’s going to be a penalty. Okay. So, how much five on three work has this group had together? Detroit 92 two-minute minor delay of game. So, Detroit’s been called for too many men. Delay of game. Cow and stick was right in there, but Casper didn’t fight that at all. So, a five on three for a minute 42 seconds. And you can see the leaves getting together having a meeting on the ice. Okay, you go there. First of all, they’re introducing themselves. I’m going to go there. I’m Eastston. I shoot left. Hi, I’m Alex. I’m not Willie, but I do shoot right. Yes, this is uh an interesting alignment. Mark Zardi even has his sheet out trying to see who who to go next. This is a mixed bag, but as you always mention, every one of these players played the power play at some point recently. Got to win a faceoff there. Alex Knander against Copper lose control. Call to Robertson. Back to Cowan. Crisscrossing with Robertson. East Cowan winds in it back across. Robertson hammered that shot high. Was the rotation they were looking for from the get-go. He landed a Mermis. Back across to Robertson. Down to Ken again. And again high. This time off a stick. So off the first face off maybe, but guys on the ice are sharp. Once you rotate through and find the seam, they’re not going to give it to you again. First pass is a bit behind him. So he air mails it wide and high. Second one very much the same thing. But Evson 6’6 with a massive reach and he’s out there before the puck even gets there. Now is when you try it one more time and pass it somewhere else. Got to win this battle here. Got to have it. There we go. A three by Yarnro. Lines took another spill. The other lines Smith Robertson feeds it across to Alex Dland Lander. Back for Cowan. Cowan to Mermis. Walks right in and shoots. Gibson the stop on that knocked down by Robertson. 50 seconds to go on the first penalty. Yarn throw couldn’t get a shot away and Sherro sends it down the ice. Here is Mermis back with it. Stephen stays out there. Robertson winds in and it poked away and it’s ged back up by Yarnro. Back to Cowan for Robertson. Cowan winds in, feeds it back. Robertson shoots. Gibson save and rebound sent down the ice by Apple. Another one out. That’s out as well. Was that straight? It was. And that’ll be another penalty to Detroit. Oh man. And that won’t start for 19 seconds. The rule is when there are already two men in the box and you get a third penalty. Detroit penalty number 23 22 2minute minor for delay a game. So the third penalty to Appleton, the 2 minutes does not start counting down until the first 19 seconds of Rasmusen’s penalty is finished. Right. So they’ll get another 37 seconds, full 37 seconds of five on three before anyone’s allowed to come out of the box. And there you see Mark Zavard top of his head timeout and allows the first unit to rest. They’ve been out there for a little bit now. They are clearly teeing up Nick Robertson, right? This is this is a shooting guy for him. Every time he gets the puck, he’s looking to shoot it. But I think a little bit more motion than just the Cow and Robertson show would open up more options and better chances. I just sort of think about different stuff that happens in a situation like this. Yes, Cowan and Roberts are trying to score, but Yarn Pro if he can prove he can take faceoffs on the right side as a right shot forward, which Toronto only has one of in William Knander, that’d go a long way to getting in the lineup. And right now, William Knander is the only right shot forward the Leafs have. He doesn’t want to take defensive own it. Here’s Cowan. Drops that back to Burmas to Cowan. Cowan shoots. It was off the leg of Bernard Docker. Gall back up by Cowani. Cowan with it. So now the Apple penalty starts. Still five on three for 15 seconds. Cowan shoots. Gibson fights that off and the puck goes up and out. It’s a good shot and a good save by John Gibson. But ideally, if it’s a five on three, the shot you have is not one without any traffic or threat around the front of the net. That’s a shot you got to beat a goalender standing still from 30 ft. It’s hard to do. Gibson blockers at a side bit more traffic in front of the net would be better for the Leafs even in a five on three. Cow take the draw on this side of the ice. the left hand shot. Same thing. If he shows he can take faceoffs, Leafs need a setterman right now. Scott Lton, if you missed it, he’s going to be out for a couple of weeks it looks like with a they’re saying a minor injury. Feels like a broken bone in his foot to me. Blocking a shot against Detroit on with his foot. Yes. Thursday. So, at practice, Craig Ruby had Max Dolby off the first line wing and down to the third line center. Now wins that draw cleanly back to Mermis. Back across to Robertson. That’s off the stick of Sherat. Up and out. They’ve read the Leaf’s mail now. Yeah. Well, you know what? 12 seconds left. You kind of get rushing it. But if I’m any other player, if I’m count, I say, “Okay, listen. They’re diving at Robertson. You’re they’re they’re jumping out on you. Kick it right through them back somewhere else and we should have a threeon one to the net.” Here’s Jonro back on the right side and again the least control the shoots that goes off Johansson and wide puck back to center ice. So Caspers back out at least on the power play per minute and 40. This has had four power play shots so far including a long five on three. Lipsier drops it back to Cowan and Cowan rings that back around. Robertson after it. attempt picked off by Cowan. Back for Letiari. Back to Thrum for Cowan. Back to the middle of Robertson. Latierryi knocks it down. This is technically a threeminute shift for this line. There has been a timeout in there. Yarn back to run shoot. He pounded that wide. It’s back down the ice and they’ll head off. run back for Alex Knander. Nifty pass there to Boyd across to Haynes. This group gets a chance to show what it can do on the power play. Haynes feeds that back this run for Knander. pivots away from Larkin inside. Ready to go on the power play. Move by and back down the ice. Ahead by Alex Knander. Sanding Pelico. Marco Casper [Music] threads that pass. Picked up by Myers. Final seconds. Loose power play. Haynes with it. And Cal shoots and Gibson got a piece of that. [Music] Casper knocks it down, but a hand pass called against Toronto in the offensive zone. And we’ll see James Rhymer in the Toronto net when we come back to Detroit. Game to the San Jose Sharks. This was the leaf lineup that night, February 23rd, against Nashville. Oh wow. Frankie Curado. Let’s go Frankie on defense. I think they got it wrong. He was the first pair of guy that night. Not third. Rhymer has played for seven teams since, including Detroit couple years ago. Last year he bounced between Buffalo and Anaheim based on waiverss by Buffalo. Anaheim claimed them. signed to a PTO this week and a quick save on Patrick Kane. Welcome to the game. The 37year-old Rhymer back in the roll that goes wide. If you’re on the Leafs right now, you do want to dig in here for a few minutes. Don’t hang him out the driver with a good chance again. Let him get into the game and warmed up and hasn’t been in training camp. Yeah, give him a chance. One of the genuinely nicest people you’ll ever encounter. pass to Larkin busting in. Dylan Larkin gets a step little backhand shot and Rhymer makes the save on his former Detroit teammate who gets a rough ride there from Benwis. Raymond come over for a word. What do you like about Benois? It does not matter who he’s up against. As Larkin, I’ll finish my check on you and I’ll go a little extra with you as well. and bunch of guys are probably going to have this escalate much further. Edmonson and Luke HS out of college has to be surreal for Rhymers, but his first six seasons with the Leafs and usually you come back to organization, you might get your number back. Well, 34 is accounted for here in Toronto now. No longer available to them. So he gets 47 more at different stops along the way, but it’s not a bad move in with the uncertainty over Joseph Wall. And you think about his career and you okay goalie. Look at his numbers. This is all time for in the history of the league. 61st in save percentage. You see that? That’s a pretty high up there. And look at the players he’s tied with. Hey, would the Leafs like Swayman Deco or the guy the other end John Gibson as their fourth option? I think so. He’s been underrated effective throughout his career. Not pretty. Not a ton of style points to his game, but a good goalie. Better than he’s probably given credit for being 96 last year between Buffalo and Anaheim. Hansen shoot those weren’t defensive powerhouses. Sandine Pelica plays it back in. Centering pass bounces down and Rhymer’s got that. The good news for James Rymer is he gets to come back to a building where he’s comfortable. He’s had some nice moments. This was his 500th game ceremony, which is the equivalent of a thousand for a player basically. He gets the silver stick and family out there celebrating a really good achievement. Again, he’s got a lot of wins. His counting numbers are pretty good. Comes in a two- two game here in the second period. There’s a hand pass called at center ice. And you wonder where it goes from here. And I’m sure the Leafs are monitoring the Joseph Wall situation on a daily basis and there is uncertainty there. Hill beats the backup. I wonder if you get Rhymer on a on a league minimum that can go up and down if Walsh when Walsh comes back. Yeah, you have to sink him to the miners. You could absorb that contract, whatever it might be. Just wonder if I maybe sticks around a little bit after Kent breaks. Well, you can I mean you can keep him on the PTO as long as you practice strike as long as he wants and seeing how he’ll be sort through his first few weeks in the NHL. Well, knock that away from Apple. I guess basically gives you lots of flexibility to go a lot of different direction depending how things develop over the next few weeks. Here’s Epinson back with it. Bernard Derer up the center ice and that’s chipped ahead by Soderbl comes in after it. He’s bumped there by Meyers. Cider back across to Sherro chip to the side of the goal. Robert makes the save off the end. Boards couldn’t hold it long enough. Sherro Soder with a shot that goes wide here. Sherro back. He fires it wide. What did I say about it? Not always been pretty for James Driver. What’ you say about maybe easing me into the game a little bit? Been the splits four times since he came in. He warmed up an hour and a half ago. Casper moves it back across to Kane in the high slot. Cider shot kicked up by Rymer. Alec Donard back the other way with Barbellini flipped ahead. Barbellini just missed on that as Gibson with lunging for the puck and the Brinker back the other way. Knocked away by Ben Wong and Knander looked ahead but Siner knocked that down. Benois back around. Barbellini. Pass that back to Benois. Sandy Pelican knocked down Alex Knander. Now Johansson back on it. And Dean Pelican up for Larkin. Feeds that ahead. Knocked down by Benning. Tied up by Raymond. Now Benning lines that back to Weber to Robertson. Lifts it high in the air. Picked up by Hayes. He’s tied up by Larkin and Larkin plays it back around Bennett. That pass picked off by Hay to Robertson. Shields off Bernard Docker. Pass picked off and brought back the other way by Spinny. Penny in for Raymond. Drop back for Edmonson. He missed on the pass. Back down to Raymond. Crissc crossing with finish back with it. Has some time. Yarn throw from taps that back to Haynes. Inside five to go here in the second period in a two- two game. These teams will play here a week from tonight in the regular season. First of four meetings this year. They’ll both open their regular season against Montreal. The weeks on Wednesday night, Detroit on Thursday. Second guard who has a goal for Detroit up for Edmonson. Edmonson shoots. That’s off the stick of Peninois. Up and out of play. The James Rhymer second act is underway with the Leafs in a two- two game here in the second period. Detroit Gordal with Mike Johnson as James Rymer returns. the Leafs. First time in nearly a decade and a lot has changed since he left, including the number of men who have played in the crease for Toronto since he left. The Leafs, like a lot of organizations, Detroit included, have been searching for stability in net. And you think about in 9 years since he’s left, 19 different goalenders, more than two per year. Basically a full set every single season. Freddy Anderson played the most. 268 games for Anderson. There are some names on there that would notice Enroth. Yeah. Calvin Pickard. J Sparks. All right. There’s Here we go. Chance now busting in as Michael Pazetta. Pazetta in. Shoot. Scores. Michael Pazetta snaps it by Gibson. And Toronto’s got the lead back. [Applause] Pazetta did not score in 25 NHL games last year, but look at this with a stick once he spots it. The one thing Michael Pazetta definitely has is fast twitch muscles. He’s an explosive athlete and Andrew Cop basically get into gets into a foot race with him from a standstill and he doesn’t close any ground. Corrals it, settles it, and then zips it underneath the arm of John Gibson. And that would feel great for Michael Bazetta who is scrapping to stay with the Leafs. That’s 163. That uh might not have been your first pick. Got to score the go ahead goal. That’s 163 in the second. Appleton plays it back in. Barbellini tries to move that back out. We talked about it earlier. Ball has won both of its road games in the preseason and lost all three of its home games. Sherro winds in back for Cider. All kinds of traffic in front of Rymer. That shot goes wide. So it’s secondary lineups have actually done okay. Barbellini in Knander shoot scores. Oh, it’s Knander. sells pass, shoots, and gives Toronto a 4-2 lead. That was top shelf wrist. Goals 54 seconds apart. Knanderesque. Just takes a seam pass. Bit of a quick twoon one. Siders’s got to back up and short side. Gibson thinks he’s got the angle covered, but when you pick it like that, doesn’t even really look off just takes it himself. And why wouldn’t you? So, two guys who played in but did not score in the NHL last year have scored here to give Toronto a 42 lead. Goals inside a minute apart. Now, play five games the least last year. We mentioned though had 22 goals in 64 games with the Marlies. Alex Elander has proven to be an elite level American League scorer in his time. He just hasn’t found a consistent enough production at the NHL level. One of the reasons he came to Detroit Toronto was he wanted to be around Willie. If he’s in the Marley, he’s still in the same city. They can hang out together and eat together and live together. And put that 88 on that jersey. It looks a lot like Willie. The right shot, the tape job on the stick, all of it. What a finish. Both were eight overall picks. William in 2014 by Toronto. Alex in 2016 by Buffalo. Sandine Pelica back for Johansson to Kane. Patrick Keane slides it back for Johansson to Brinken. Sand Dean Pelica centers it. That was blocked by Meyers and banked back down the ice and it dies at the goal line and icing call against Toronto. So Michael Bazetta gets the offensive explosion going with his rush attempt shot from the top of the circle. It’s been a while as you mentioned. And what did that feel like? Yep. Get that off my back. I’m overdue. And it whether you’re expected to score or not, it feels so good when you do when it’s been a while. 25 games from Montreal last year. Didn’t score, but was given a lot of credit for how he maintained a pretty good attitude. Yeah. While not playing. In comes Raymond. Walks in. Coke check by Robertson at the last minute. Sanding Pelican. Back for Cider with a shot and Rhymer makes the stop and there’s no rebound. [Music] [Applause] Settle things down here. A little scrum in the crease. And you may have noticed if you watch Detroit a lot, their uniforms look different. What’s with the name bars? That’s not what we’re normally used to seeing. That’s on purpose. So this is what it looks like in the preseason. But once the regular season comes, then you get the traditional Detroit Arch, the the name bars we’ve been used to seeing over the years. But Paul Boyer, the longtime equipment man here, likes to create a different feel for the regular season as opposed to the preseason. That once you get to the regular season, you’ve earned the Detroit Red Wings official uniform. That’s why I say it’s hard to make to have trouble with the curve trying to get to the curved. There you go. See name bar and even the veterans get the straight one. Yeah. until next week. A little bit of work, but it’s a nice little touch though. A long time been around forever here. Hockey Canada employee too. A very highly regarded equipment man around the league. Try to sue St. Marie, Ontario. Larkin bank hangs that back down. Raymond looking after it. Taken down to the corner by Mermis. That pass got away in the long shot by Sherro is gloved by Rymer. So once again, player B or team B, the Toronto Maple Leafs have put up a really good fight. It’s the strangest thing. I mean, they won in Ottawa, won in Montreal, won big in Montreal. And that was the Canadians a lineup and here they are going. It’s a pretty and beat Ottawa is pretty much NHL team. You take pride in it. You you know what you are. The players in the dress room know that they are the the second group. You take pride in that challenge. Final minute now of the second period. Move back to Edmonson. Shoots. That goes high. We stick was snapped in half. Here’s Andrew Cop with it. top back to Bransk Negard who counted that wide rar spot. Edmonson shot was blocked. Bouncing puck knocked down the ice by Pare as Edmonson goes back and I say called once again and the NFL is back tomorrow. bright and early. The Vikings and the Browns from London at 9:30 a.m. Eastern, 6:30 a.m. Pacific. A busy morning tomorrow. I got the F1 race first. Oh, yeah. Then I got the Europe game. Got a flight home. Got a little salty in uh qualifying in the F1. Yeah, Max did not care. Your boy Max Versappa was a little upset. Isn’t he always perpetually irritated? They’re getting a little scared that I might be getting ready to go on a run though to chase down the McLarens for the drivers championship. Singapore tomorrow be a hot one. What time is that one? I think it’s 7:00 a.m. Eastern. Time winding down here in the period and the Leafs will go dressing with a 42 lead thanks to the goals by Pazetta and Alex Knander. here in Detroit. Now, time for our second admission with your host, James Duffy. Gordon, you guys said a really impressive performance by a lot of soon to be Marlies tonight. We’re going to focus on the big squad and the big questions facing coach Craig Barube ahead in our second intermission. We’ll also check in on David Pon the sends taking on the Habs. A couple of teams hoping to push the Leafs in the standings this season. [Music] Scores unassisted and Alexander Knander from Cedric Pere gives the Leafs a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. Let’s rejoin Mark Masters. Gore James Rymer playing for the Leafs for the first time since February 23rd, 2016. He said today he doesn’t remember that last game with the Leafs, which was a 3-2 loss to the Nashville Predators, but he does remember how weird it felt to be traded just a few days later. Rhymer said he never imagined he would get a second chance with his first NHL team, and he’s having so much fun so far. The 37year-old said hockey is the greatest game on earth, and Toronto is the greatest city to play it in. He has so many good memories of his time with the Leafs. He said there were probably some bad moments in there, but he doesn’t remember any of them. And guys, he said he doesn’t think anyone else does either. Eternally optimistic and positive. Yeah, it’s great qualities. But you know what? For all the grief that Toronto as a market has taken the last little while, nice to hear someone say, “Hey, it’s a great place to play.” And I love being there. What you need to be a goender, a good glove hand, and a short memory. He’s got the memory part dialed in. Yeah. He’s got the same save percentage as Jeremy Swayman. In fact, your Demco for their careers. Pretty good. Team start the third period five on five. You’ve got to think that the Red Wings will want to push here in the third period. I mean, this is their this is a lineup pretty much that’s going to open against Montreal on Thursday night here. This will be a challenge for this youthful Toronto lineup to play a good road third period. That pass picked off. Yarro with a chance in tight. Turned away by Gibson. That would have been the one. Yarro alone in front. Brink fires it back in as Marco Casper looks for the loose puck. Meers for Leier. Rink wide. He goes for run through the middle for Quillin. Edmonson with the long range. Takes that away. Chipped by Meyers as the Brink try to knock that back out. Cowin back in support of the pinching. Meyers cleans up the play. Little defensive detail that the coaches would notice. Go, go, go. Now Cowan jumps in across the line along with Quillin. Winds in. Poke check there by De Brinka. Goes ranked wide to Casper and Marco Casper whistles that back down. Another guy who played in Sweden. He’s an Austrian who spent three years of Roga Swedish hockey league angle home. [Applause] Lead pass for Copper. Back across to Cop. Back he goes for Bernard Doner. He’ll hand it a shot. That’s gloved by Rhymer and he’ll hang on. Another little pushing and shoving match. This call for Cop Rag knee guard line is involved in a lot of that in front of the net as Yonro could have made it five. might have put this game out of reach as Bill Larkin take to take to Yarn Prod Gibson has to come out to bail out the captain who is frustrated with that decision. Long shot by Johansson goes wide. Moved back out by Barbellini. Chip back ahead by Alex Neander. He’s got a step. He’s got Shaw with him in shoots and Gibson makes a stop. on Logan Shaw who scored earlier. The pace up the ice by Toronto. Knander fending off a check. Shaw beating this guy up. Point blank opportunities due to the speed. I’d love to see the last time an NHL team went 3-0 on the road in the preseason and winless at home. At least they’re 02 and one at home. There’s an overtime loss to Ottawa on that. as Boyd walks in, shoots, gives him a stop on that, and he juggles the rebound because normally you don’t play your A lineup in road preseason games. Team B right now says, “Let’s have an inner squad against team A and see how we do.” Great as Shaw’s turn aside from Gibson. Really good feed here by Alex Knander. Flat out in space for Shade into Gibson has come up a couple times big to keep this game within touching distance for Detroit. Faceoff not done fairly [Music] marked him for the draw against Boyd. Another NHL veteran. Nine years in the league. Played three games last year for Minnesota. Had a couple good years down in Arizona. where he was close to sticking and becoming a regular. Walking is Raymond. He was hooked off the puck. They’re going to call the hooking call on Toronto, giving Detroit an early power play here in the third period as Pazetta goes off. Plenty of numbers back for Toronto. Toronto 61. Two-minute minor hooking. But ideally, you don’t want to let the puck carrier get to the middle of the ice and then push back. See Boyd reaching, Pazetta reaching, Meyers and Thrun, not having a tight gap on the blue line. And Pazetta, a goal scorer tonight, takes a penalty and puts Detroit on the power play where we talked about they were so good last year. Fourth by percentage, first by number of power play goals scored. 64 power play goals. You usually think if you can get anything over 4550, you’re doing well. More sort of half a goal a game on the power play. [Music] Raymond is a shooter. Deets a shooter. Larkin and Kane if Bransard finds one of their lineup. He can really shoot it as well. Yarn moves in. Toronto has a short-handed goal in this game. That was Dick Robertson. That penalty 246 in the third period to bring it to Kane heads it to Brink to Larkin. Larkin drops that back to Cider. Cider going to feed that back across. Meyer’s got a stick on that. It’s saved by Raymond. Back to Larkin. Raymond to Kane. Kane try to center a pinballs around in front of a shot away. Kane back to Cider. Raymond centers for L. shot that’s blocked by Benwis. Raymond back down to the brinket. Lose at the side of the goal. He shoots short side. Put that wide. Cider back across to Raymond. Have a look back across to Kane. He’s also scored in this game. Drops it back to Cider. Raymond sends it back in front. Tipped wide by Larkin. A lot of room on the goal line for Detroit. Cider pass is picked off by Myers running underneath the change as Meyers moves in alone. A long shot in on Gibson. 40 seconds to go in the Red Wings power play. Confer for Casper. Sandine Pelica from Cop. Sanding Pelica shoots. Robert Glove save. He dropped the rebound. Now Sandine Pelica holds the line, flips it back across to Casper. Sandine Pelica shoots, blocked in front. That was Weber got in the way of that. And sit back down the ice. [Applause] Sand Dean Pelica for Soder Blow. One shot for Detroit. Nut power play. Remains a 4-2 game. Sandine Pelican back across to Edmonson. Shoots. That’s off a stick. Up and out of play. James Rhymer came into the game halfway through the second period. He’s been clean so far. This we’ve seen this before. Occasionally has a hard time holding on to pucks with his glove hand. Then he swats that one down. Helped out by his defenseman. And this looked pretty sharp for a guy who just got into camp a few days ago. and thrust into a game shortly after. [Music] By the way, elsewhere tonight, it’s 6 nothing Florida against Tampa. 2,000 penalty minutes in that game. The penalty summary is like the phone book. It’s just incredible what’s been happening between those two teams in the preseason. eight or eight or so players kicked out of that game with Miss Condas. There’s going to be a response after Nagel got roughed up last time out. So, right, it’s been quiet from the Ottawa Montreal game so far, as we heard. It’s far more frequent that there’s no fallout. There’s no continuation of bad blood. It’s rare when something like Florida Tampa happens. where they talk about it and then it actually happens. I was here in Detroit one night when it happened against Colorado. Oh, well that was three years in the making every game see. Edmonson opposite back for Penny. Penny looks like he’ll make this Detroit team out of training camp. The seventh round pick we mentioned he played for Camel. They went to the Memorial Cup. He hardly played as an underage. They had Logan Stanovven, Fraser Minton, a host of other players. He was the third or fourth line players get a lot of looks, but exploded last year. Scored 37 goals and he’s had a real strong camp for the Red Wings. If you’re 20 and a seventh rounder and North American, that is an unusual NHL player, right? Occasionally Europeans who are less well seen get drafted late and make it of that age but not North American hard to slip through the crowd. A lot of eyes now and video and you name it. Redwing still have James Van Reike who just got back into camp. His family just had twins and there was some complications there so he missed a little time. Brinka winds it and shoots. Stopped by Rhymer. [Applause] I think he’ll be in the lineup when he gets up and running in some capacity. Sh. A long shot that goes wide. Cider back for De Brinka Sherro. Tied up in the corner by Haynes. Brought back out by Thr. finished fourth overall last year. Fifth straight year that he’s finished in the top 10 in the overall standing. [Music] They’re at that spot though where it doesn’t really matter as far as whether their season success or failure what happens the regular season. Yeah. Like I know you got to get there and there’s lots to be proud of. But our Docker shoots. Runner makes the save on that and is able to hang on. 1152 to go here in the third period. The Leafs a 42 lead in Detroit. Changing goalenders for Detroit again. John Gibson on the right, Cam Talbot on the left. And this since Jimmy Howard has retired just 5 years ago. They’ve gone through 12 different goalies. The most used goalie in that time, Billy Huso. came over from St. Louis. Now it’s sprinkled around Alex Lion was up there amongst the leaders as well. Yeah, Lions in Buffalo now. He might start their opener. Got touchan’s injured. Sandine Pelica plays it across. Shot by Evansson deflects wide sodom. Now Quillin picked up that bouncing puck at the side of the goal. Sandy Pelico holds it. Knocked out Cowan’s away with Quill. In comes Easter Cowan that rolls towards the goal and Gibson stewed that away. Apple rink wide pass chipped away by Cowan. [Applause] Played five of Toronto six preseason games with Eastern Cowan. Myers puts it back down. Here comes Logan Shaw puts it back in front and Parallel couldn’t get that shot away. Alex Knander taken away by Cider. Up ahead for Finny. [Music] Alex Knander puts that back to center ice. Chipped ahead by Raymond but picked off by Alex Knander. Haynes works his way in. A drops it back. Alex Mander rips that high. Barb centers it. It’s knocked away by Penny but stolen back by Haynes. Down to Knander. Tied up by Johansson. And Simone Benwa can’t hold the line. A chance for Raymond but that’s taken away by Barbellini. Brought back in by Larkin. Drops it off to Raymond. Tired group of Toronto forwards now. Fed down to Finny. Shoots and Rymer makes the stop on that. 946 to go in the third period. Toronto up by two in the preseason closer for both the Red Wings and the Leafs. Uh we’ll continue to to build around that and uh you know that’s what I’m going to stick to doing and uh um and if you have a better way, you’re free to share it with me. Okay. Ser No, seriously. I don’t think he meant that. It’s been a grind. It has. just hyper competitive, used to success, proud, proud, and bears the responsibility of wanting this franchise to be what it was when he played here. And it it’s taken way longer than he wanted it to, than he probably thought it would. And and the success he found in Tampa has not happened here. Now, Tampa built it around a couple of first overall picks as Rhymer makes that save on Casper. One of the problems for Detroit has been they keep getting bumped back in the lottery to the point where the NHL actually changed the lottery rules. They had about a 5-year run where they were hurt every year dropping down two or three spots. They pick fourth instead of second, which can matter as we know that getting superstars is far more likely in the first two picks of a draft than even after that. De Brink with it. Centers it. Casper tapped that wide. It took Philip Sadena instead of Quinn Hughes. Now a lot of everyone who picked before Quinn Hughes went would right regret that selection. Moider was a good pick. Took him out of Lucas Raymond’s a real good pick. Moid’s a good pick. These are all good draft picks. They just the rules, you know, in some cases worked against them. They, you know, you look at great franchises and successful franchises. One of the things they have, well, they have two, two things they have in common. One, they have high draft bets. Pittsburgh, Chicago, LA have had first and second overall picks. The second thing they have is a lot of players they drafted after the first round. That’s the other commonality. You look at Tampa, except for Florida, who’s got it different than everyone else. They got Exclad and Barkov and that’s it. Everyone else has traded her. They traded picks to get Yeah. Reinhardt, Bennett [Applause] and signed the free agent goal and they found their goalie and free agent. Correct. It is exceedingly difficult to build. Raspersonson. A shot goes off the end of the glove of Rhymer now. Cider back with it. Rasmus. Shirro picks his back up. Hands is around Cowan. Cowan stays with him. Play well to the corner board. So, oh, we got a penalty for hold after he grabbed them the last minute. He was right there. He did everything right. Reeseed out in the last second with his open hand to pick up the penalty on Sherro. Toronto number 53. Two minute minor for holding. So he works his way down. Good stick. Good physical engagement here. Right there. You see him latch on to the stick holding arm of Sherro. So Sherro could not poke the puck away. Good call by the official. Good effort by Cowan to try to manage that wing forward battle. Just got a little bit greedy with the hold. It was very good power play. Goes back to work again. Watch out for Lark in the middle. One of the better bumper players in the NHL. Raymond in the corner with it. Lucas Raymond sends that back down for the brick. And a back pass of Miss Kane Kane. Back to Larkin and Debrink’s been shaken up as the Red Wings gained possession. Alex Debrink. There’s no penalty coming up with whatever happened there. Not happy. And the fact that they blew to Brink’s like they got clipped in the face. Look at my mouth. Where’s the penalty? This face off will have to come outside now. Is it the butt end of Yeah. Oh, it’s Rhyr’s stick. that. So he gets a little shove there. Can you call that a butt end when you skate into the guy like he’s obvious doesn’t know he’s there. He’s just the stick is just sitting there. Legitimate question. I don’t think you can call that a butt end. And that’s not a malicious shove by Myers. He’s just sort of navigating traffic in front of the net. I don’t think you can call that a penalty. No. Certainly not on Myers, obviously. But on Rymer, I don’t think so. When goalies are allowed to have their sticks there, he’s just playing. You can’t just dive your face into a goalie stick and say it’s butt end or high stick. If you could, lots of guys would benefit. Wow, we would do it to get a power play. We would absolutely do it. So long as I get to stay on the power play that I just earned. If I get pulled off and I’m not doing it. We know, Mike. We know. Set in Pelican in for Casper. The cop Casper to Sandine Pelican and should score second guard. He can rip it and he’s got Detroit back within one, [Music] his second of the game. I think that puts him alone in first in preseason scoring. And we have highlighted the fact that he could shoot the puck as well as anybody who’s not in the NHL. And he shows it right here. One-time from Sandin Pelica catches a piece of shin pad of Cade Weber, then bounces wide and past Rhymer. But he’s a willing shooter. Does not defer. Doesn’t matter who he’s playing with. Doesn’t matter the situation. He puts pucks on net and good things happen when he does. I think he’s tied for the preseason scoring lead now with seven points. Now Chester Perry and scores snaps it home. And another guy who hasn’t scored in the NHL ever. Gives Toronto its two goal lead back. Cedric Par has never played an NHL game. What a response. Bouncy puck. Michael Pazada kicks it around and sort of blown with Evson get caught out wide. Good support from Lo Parare and John Gibson was brought in to not let goals like this in. Now it’s just preseason. Not saying anything’s a big deal, but the this is the stuff he’s got to stop. He’s given up five on 23. So Roberts and Shorty was not an unstoppable shot. This was not an unstoppable shot. Even Neanderers good shot. Not an unstoppable shot. Not been a great night for the goalender of Detroit. So 15 seconds after Bransk brings Detroit back within one. Cedric Parse claim to fame prior to this was hitting Patrick Liony last year in the preseason and injuring his knee. They’re sure with a shot at the post. And so Par played for the Marlies last year, 12 goals in 59 games. [Applause] And team B keeps finding away. So Pazetta didn’t score in the NHL last year. Yeah. Alex Neland didn’t score in the NHL last year. Yeah. And Cedric Par’s never played in the NHL. And so they get three goals from those three players. And a little good fortune off the crossbar as Brinket in front was bothering Ry Sherro with a heavy wrist but catches nothing but iron. It’s been a good resilient effort kind of game for the Toronto Police. Tap it up for Barbellini. Flip back down to Detroit. Zod Shaw shoots that deflect wide. Confer bags it back out and swept back in by Cob inside. Six to go here in the third period. These teams will meet a week from tonight here in Detroit. Leaves were 3- one last year. I mentioned the last 30 meetings the leaves are 225 and three. Robertson centers it a year with a chance and Gibson squeezes that. So the Red Wings draw within one on the goal by Bransk Negard. But back comes Cedric Pare to give the Leafs a 5-3 lead. One of the marquee moments of this game was the return to the Toronto Maple Leafs of James Rhymer and he has been pretty sharp. 13 of 14. He’s had some bobbles every now and then, but largely been effective at getting his body in front of the puck, which is how he goends. He is not stylistically gorgeous in there, but he is effective. And I’d be curious to hear the be a fly in the wall of the goalie conversation over the next few days, what they want to do with him, and how it all starts to shake out. Cider’s pass goes off the skate of Hayes. Robertson chips it back down the Red Wing zone. Nicing called against Toronto. And all that with the backdrop of again our best wishes to Joseph Wall of whatever he’s working through and the uncertainty that the organization has without saying it but by their action shown but with his return. They’re not sure when he would be returning and so they have to prepare for an unknown timeline. Kane empty pass ahead to Sandine Bella. He was drafted with a pick Detroit got in a trade that sent Philip Peronic to Vancouver. Peronic turned out to be a really good player and pivotal piece in Vancouver. Inside five to go here in the third. Lead pass for De Brink. back out there and it’s for Casper and Murmur has tied his stick up and knocked the puck wide and had a nervous look back at the official and he’s bumped back down to the Redwing zone now. Let the area feeds it across to Cow and finds Cullen moving in. Gibson makes the stop and is able to corral the rebound with Leier in there digging and that’ll draw the attention of the Red Wings. right in there to try to get Edmonson off Leiieri. Leiieri took a couple extra shves and pokes at John Gibson as the whistle was blowing and he had it covered up. So he should not be surprised to draw the reaction of the Red Wings [Music] trying to suggest the puck was loose. Really nice play here. Little give and go and out of the corner. Quillin just can’t quite do it fast enough to elevate it. There’s the puck hanging on the hip. A little bit loose by John Gibson. What Letier saying like, “Hey, now this is nothing.” Uh the Florida Tampa game which started the same time as this one. Yeah. Just hit the second intermission. There have been eight game misconduct handed up in that game. You figure you’re throwing enough guys out at some point. The only thing left is for the guys to have to play. So apparently that’s not working. So Leiaryi in an effort to calm this down get the only penalty despite getting bowled afterwards. And Brans Negard who just got a power play goal. We’ll have to watch the first unit try to get the Red Wings back within one. at 15 it back across to Kaneer. Cider back across to Raymond. Raymond keeps it down for hammered that pass wide. [Applause] Back at the line is Sid across for Raymond. Larkin back to Keane. Cross ice for Raymond misfired on that now. Cider back with it. Raymond back to Cider. Keeps it down for the break. Sideore pass but Larkin misfired on that. Robertson get down there with a stick. Empty netter. Cider 14 try to center it to Brinket reaching for it. Picked up by Benwis. Simone Benwa off the glass and back down the ice. Going to go after Lurin here. Yeah. And another penalty coming out to Benwa for a late project with Larkin as they were going to the box. You see the replay of it. Larkin it went down with a bit of an embellishment as well. So 46 second five on three here. Chance for a six on three for Detroit if they want it. So Ben wasn’t happy about the hit on his clearing attempt by Larkin. Toronto number two, two two-minute minor crosschecking. So first the defensive play here by Nick Robertson. He gets down and helped with Larkin. Well done. Saves a goal there and then as the puck is about to be clear. Got to get down leave your stick and just in time by Robertson top of the here. You see Larkin a little slash when Ben was already on the ground and you can barely see it but watch Larkin go down here. So that’s definitely a cross check. Well, that’s probably an embellishment as well. But either way, six on three as you mentioned. Goalies out for three minutes left. 46 seconds. That’s 1647. The third period of the extra man Kane beats it back across for De Brink. Meer’s going to stick on that. Raymond winds it down for De Brink. Back to Lucas Raymond. Raymond feeds across for with a quick chance and Rymer the save on that. Welcome back to the Toronto Maple Leaf. James Rymer. Six on three to finish the game. This feels familiar. Kane to Larkin. Shoot. Scores. Lin scores on a six on three and the Red Wings will stay on the power play. Little stink eye by Lin. That’s Simone Benois going off celebrating the goal. Saying dumb penalty by you, goal by me. And you just you just can’t get stretched out. I mean, it’s impossible. It’s six on three, but you just got to stay tight if you’re the penalty killers. And K Weber probably gets a little too far to the middle, a little too high. And Dylan Larkin has really good hands down around the net. And there you go. Nice play, Dummy. was what he was thinking. I give you the PG version. So, expect the goal to be out again here in another 30 right now. Here he comes. Six on four. Kane feeds it back down to the leaf zone. Two and a half to go here in the third. The lamp out scored by number 71 Dylan Barkin. Say Detroit probably hasn’t practiced six on three so far this year. Cider Raymond. They won’t have one chance all year long. Kane down at a break. Bouncing puck. Herma’s going to stick on that. Battle away for it. Yarn broke in there as well. Kane shovels that back for Cider to Larkin. Cider. Raymond works it and shoots. That was blocked by Yarn Croak. And the puck goes up and out. 36 seconds to go in the Benois penalty. I imagine Detroit will take their time out here and have their guys. It’s Dylan Larkin the most recent goal scorer. So this year, if you look at his consistent production, he is guaranteed to get 29 or 34 cuz he just working on the straight. just turns out quality season right around a point a game right around 30 31 goals for the captain Dylan Larkin and last year he was really proficient on the power play one of the better power play scorers in the league down in the bottom of that pile is Alex Tang architect of the Detroit power play and a really gifted offensive mind as a player and that’s translated on the coach. He’s a very good coach and he stayed with the staff even though they changed the head coach which doesn’t always happen but speaks to his adaptability. Every now and then I wonder if he wonders I wish I could just put myself out there to run the half wall cuz he was really good at it. He’s got to learn to hide his white board better cuz I know what the six on four looks like now. He’s given up his his secrets. Yro, clean win. Yeah, well done. Sent down the ice by Meyer. 30 seconds to go in the Ben W penalty. Minute 40 to go in the third period. And Kane winds ahead. Patrick Kane across for Raymond who’s banning that shot. There’s Casper reaching for it. Marco Casper back for Cider back across to Kane as Cider shoots. Blocked in front. Rebound put wide by Casper. Final seconds now. The penalty. Cider back across to Raymond. Raymond feeds down with a shot. Short side save made by Rhymer. Benwis steps up. The Brinken back to Cider. Minute to go now in the third. Kane shoots Rhymer save. Rebound loose in front. Poked away by Meyers. Snider back with it. Long shot drier and he’ll hang on to that. When James Rymer catches the puck, sometimes it looks like he just has it go into his glove. It doesn’t really squeeze his glove shut as Detroit puts a couple pucks in around the front of the net. Good job. That’s a better job staying tight for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Stay around the front of the net. But look at this one just sort of sitting there. He never really tracks it. Got to make a play here. Found a count. He fell for a moment but back hands it back out. Ray Sport coming in. Icing called against Toronto. That used to be frowned upon. Not so much anymore. What’s that? The late icing. No late icing or trying to score. It’s definitely part for the course now. Cow in there just trying to make a hard play. You’re better to be certain. Ask Quinton Biffield. Just get it out as opposed to turn it over. Time on the Detroit part of the LA Edmonson series last year. Fourth game for LA basically going up 3-1 if he chips the puck in the neutral zone. Sand Dean Pelica feeds it across. Score Albert Johansson with 29 seconds left ties the game at five. [Music] [Applause] man advantage goals. Now, this is not a power play goal, but it’s a sixon five. The icing comes back to hurt the Toronto Maple Leafs. They don’t win the faceoff. And that’s a lot of traffic. Ben goes down, protects the face, and tries to block the shot. And that’s a heavy heavy one-time. And so here we go. The veteran Red Wings claw their way back down two twice in the third period. Tie up the five. Some more Toronto Maple Leaf fans are thinking about trying to protect a 5-2 lead in the third. [Music] [Applause] Alex Neander chips it back down the Redwing zone. In that case, the icing did costs the Leafs. Yeah. Now, a chance in front of this block on it. 10 seconds to go in the third. Leonard chips that back. Picked off by Apple moving in. Time winding down. Sodom shoots. Put that high. And this game will go to overtime. Toronto’s second of the preseason. They lost to Ottawa in extra time earlier. Nobody wants preseason end. Let’s keep it going. Little bit extra. Albert Johansson, the 24y old scored three goals last year for Detroit. Not the puck like he score. He should score a few more to tie things up in the last minute against Toronto tonight. And Detroit Red Wings were trailing in the third period. Talked about how good they’ve been on the power play. trans eagard got the going shot that ricochets off a defenseman and in. And then on a six on three to Lin James Rymer and then a six on five even later final minute it’s Johansson with a huge one-time post and in all three goals for Troy scored with an extra guy on the ice to tie it up against Toronto. Well, the NBA Canada Series 2026 presented by Bell heads to Vancouver as the Nuggets face the Raptors in preseason action Monday at 10 Eastern on TSN. Preseason basketball. Yeah, already they jump right into it, too. Well, the Leafs last year were 10-2 in overtime. Overall, they were 11 and4 after regulation. That was the second best winning percentage in the league next to the Winnipeg Jets, who were almost unbeatable past regulation. This is part of the concern or awareness for Toronto this year. They were so good in those situations. Onego goal games, overtime games, games where they were outshot. All these areas where they probably won more than is sustainable last year, right? The same will be said of Winnipeg. Sure. But like Toronto will have to play better this year to get the same record given how well they did in those tight games, right? So I wonder if Shaw is going faceoff get off or if he’s actually going to play this one out. Larkin Raymond and Sandine Pelica for Detroit. Shaw Robertson and Benwis for Toronto at 1930 on the third period. A refra. Here comes Lucas Raymond. Raymond Washington. Great move. Backhand shot stopped by Rama. The rebound. Robert turns that away. Hello. Here’s Raymond back with it. Feeds it back to Sandine Pelican. And number Axel Sandine Pelican. Across to Raymond. Winds in again. Raymond got a stick tied up by Ben. Puts it ranked wide, but it drives Sandine Pelica back to the Detroit zone. On comes the area for Toronto with Powen. Fenwell was trying to get off the ice but can’t as Larkin winds in with Kane. Larkin left drops it off to Kane moving in. Patrick Kane around Ken shoots up high on Rymer makes the stop on that move it was able to hang on. These guys want a break. They need a whistle. He wisely takes it as Raymond showed a little dash. This is a nice one-on-one move. Benois gets all gapped out. No speed outside in. Little tow drag and Ben goes flailing to the ground. Ry makes a save. And here’s Patrick Kane trying to flick one like he scored his goal with. Catches Rymer in the mask. Here’s Cider peeling back being watched by Alex Knander. And EMTT Finny out there for Detroit in the overtime. Away comes Patrick Kane. drops it back to Finny. Got to give it back to Kane. Yes, you think and Kane took the stick there from Myers. Penalty coming to Toronto. Now the Twins got a six on three goal earlier. They got a chance. Four on three coming up. Penny drops it back to Raymond for Cider. Penny feeds it back across. Raymond stick broke in half. He’s mad. That was a great scene. Look, here’s Cider back with him. Fed back to Larkin. Across to Finny. Back to Larkin. Feeds it across to break and a shot and the glove saved by Rhymer. And now the penalty to Meyers and Detroit’s going to the power play in overtime. When you check the entire overtime as Toronto had to do 51 two minute minor high sticking get little go away with your stick. Myers knows it just grazed the mask of Patrick Kane and Detroit Revs probably have worked on four and the good news is for Detroit all the important players that played on the power play last year are back this year and are in this game right so there’s familiarity whether they practice it or not comes down again win a faceoffs give yourselves the full two minutes to play in the offensive zone if you’re Dylan Larkin and if you’re yarn pro just the opposite at 159 of banks it back her up. By the way, two more game misconducts hand up the Florida Tampa game in the third period of Boliver Bjorkstread and Mackie Samoskovich have been kicked out. Everyone getting involved are and Detroit in the power play here in overtime. Raymond takes the return pass from De Brink across to Kane. Feeds it across the Brink shoots off the outside of the goal. Four forwards out here for Detroit. Raymond being watched by Yarn Cro. Back across for Debrink to Raymond. Kane got to go cross ice. Yarn got a stick on that. Raymond moves back in. Kane shoots. It’s off the stick of Ben wide to Brinken. Back to Kane. Feeds it down to Larkin. Back in Kane backhanded it wide. Raymond back with it. Kane back to Larkin. Down to Raymond to Larkin. Kane. Larkin shoots out the outside of the other goal frame. 40 seconds to go on the Detroit power play. Patrick Kane winds in. Back for Lurin. Shoot. Scores. Tyler Lurin. Overtime winner. And the Red Wings take it six to five. [Music] [Applause] It took a while, almost a minute and a half, passing it around in the offensive zone. And James Rhymer getting a little tap from all his former teammates, pushing him well on his journey with the Toronto Maple Leafs. A big comeback for the Detroit Red Wings. All man advantage powered right down two twice in the third period and eventually find Larkin attacking downhill. Patrick Kane gets James Ry gets Bel Larkin who sees James Rhymer deep in his net cuz he’s worried about passes going back to the back post and that opens up short side and Larkin puts another one on the power play like he did so many times last year and a nice word for his former teammate as they happily conclude their preseason. Eight games for Detroit. Oh, and they want to get on with the real thing. They finish with a 5 and3 record and Toronto winds up two two and two in the preseason. Our first edition of Bolson Maple Leaf Hockey in the regular season will come your way on Tuesday, October 14th as the Leaf play host to the Nashville Predators. The Mark Masters, Mike Johnson, all of us at TSN. I’m Gord Miller. Good night from Detroit. Heat. Heat. [Music]
