San Jose Sharks Continue Roster Cuts | Thompson and Afanasyev To IR To Start The Season?

The Sharks continue to whittle down their roster as they get closer to a final 23man group. You’re Locked on Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Hello, welcome to Locked on Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team, the Bay Area. My name is JD Young, caretaker at the Reef, also the co-host of Locked On NHL. And today we’re going to get caught up on some uh transactions as the Sharks continue to try to get closer to their 23man roster. Look at the decisions still left to be made as the Sharks again trying to get that final roster before Monday afternoon. And my final 23man projection of who I think makes the Sharks opening night roster, which will of course get thrown away in like two minutes as transactions continue to happen throughout the season. So, uh, before all that, do want to let you guys know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting fanduel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. So, um, we had, of course, uh, Sunday morning the Carl Grundstrom trade. I I did a 10-minute episode about that, but um you know, Carl Grundstrom and our Tim Gear both now part of the Philadelphia Flyers organization. Grundstrom of course placed on waiverss right away. See Flyers look to create uh space and flexibility with their organization. And the Sharks getting back Ryan Ellis uh who again has not played a hockey game since 2021. uh would be shocking to see him out there playing a hockey game right now for the San Jose Sharks. So, uh and a move and we we discussed about it, right, to open up the pathway uh as the Sharks dump two contracts to get one back, open up the pathway for both Michael Misa and Sam Dickinson to be on this roster. So, um, that was kind of the, you know, one, I think the the first big domino for the Sharks is again trying having to get rid of at least one contract and the Sharks did that with the Carl Grundstrom trade. And also, they got a 2026 six round pickback, which I’m sure the Sharks will use for ammo for to do something else with, whether it’s part of a bigger trade where they’re getting something else back and they have to give up a little bit there, or whatever it is. uh Mike Greer will will find a good use for that 2026 uh six round pick. So that was of course the big news for for San Jose. They also um added a couple different uh transactions to send guys down to the miners uh for the Sharks. So we had uh Quinton Musty who had a very strong camp and you know was was thought to be a potential you know guy to make it but you know among one of the last cuts and I don’t think that’s any detriment to to Quint Musty I thought he had a really good camp but as I’ve said spending some time in the AHL for Quint Musty is probably the best move right where he can go down there he’s going to be playing top six minutes he’s going to have a big role with the Barracuda and it nice to see him kind of uh dominate against uh other men, you know, in in what’s a developmental league in the AHL before playing in the NHL. So, um yeah, I think it’s the perfectly like it’s the right move for for San Jose as they continue with Quinton Musty and his development. So, I like that. Same thing Cam 1 also sent down to the AHL uh where he’s going to go through the same thing. Again, I I’ve said it a bajillion times, the Colin Graph patch of success. wouldn’t be surprised if we see Lund up here maybe halfway through the season as he goes out there and kind of polishes off his game, rounds out his game. And you know, I I I think like there while they’re different players, Colin Graph and and Cam Lun, you know, Graph is definitely more kind of a little bit more defensive oriented, a little bit more of that Swiss Army knife type of player where he can play a bunch of different roles. Cam Lun, I think, is a much more offensive uh player. you could see much more goals from. But again, these two kind of if if you’re not scoring goals, what else can you do for me? And I think spending some time for Cam Lund down in the AHL, he’ll be perfectly fine down there. So, uh like like those moves from from the Sharks there. Uh Pavl Regenda was also placed on waiverss even though, you know, coming off his four assist night on uh Friday night against Vegas. So, he was placed on waiverss and we won’t know until Tuesday afternoon or Monday afternoon uh or Monday morning about 11:00 a.m. Pacific time, sorry. Uh I guess it’s Monday afternoon, whatever. You know, other time zones, unimportant time zones, if you will. Uh what Reginend’s future is, but assuming he slides through waiverss, he’ll be back on the Barracuda. And I do expect Reenda, like Reenda showed a lot. I do think he will get some time um in the NHL this year. More than deserving to get time in the NHL this year. So um kind of like Walker Der last year who we saw like the Sharks claim. Uh wouldn’t be surprised if you know spend some time up in up in the NHL this year. So um and then Colin White noted veteran also he cleared waiverss was assigned to the San Jose Barracuda. He’s going to play a big role with the Barracuda. would have liked to see him in the preseason a little bit here, a little bit more, but he’s going to have a big role. Like, he’s a veteran. You know exactly what you’re getting from Colin White. I think that’s probably your second line center on the Barracuda to be honest. Um, and he should have a big season with with the the Barracuda. Probably going to have some uh some of the children on his wings. And uh last year he had a really big impact on on Borla. You saw like when Bordlo and him played together, they had really good chemistry. Uh so those are and of course some of the guys who uh we saw transactions from like Jacob Sharick and some of these guys who were called up also sent back down to the the Barracuda as well. So we’re we’re getting closer to this final roster here um as these Sharks have continued to to make some moves um try to get to that 23man roster. though. Um it does while not official not official two players are not on the Sharks roster right now um that both players would have to clear waiverss and that’s Igor Aisonv and Jack Thompson. Um, I know that uh Shangpang wrote about Offic uh going to IR and it looks like my guess is both off and Jack Thompson will start this season on IR. Um, so both these players, uh, they will still on the church roster, but they don’t count towards the 23 just like all the, you know, just like, uh, Logan Couture, you know, all U Carrie Price, Ryan Ellis, these guys, they’re on the 50 contracts, but they don’t count towards the 23. Um, so my assumption is that these players are going to start the season on IR. When they get healthy, the Sharks will make some decisions. And as a reminder, both these players will have to clear through waiverss to get onto the San Jose Barracuda. So again, as of I’m recording this about 5:30 Pacific time on Sunday night. Uh neither one of, you know, officially on the Sharks roster uh right now. So I’m guessing that they are on IR. So we’ll see. That kind of clears up a little bit of of what the Sharks have to still decide here. uh but does give them a little bit of wiggle room at least to to kind of start out the season right uh by placing both these players on IR and then when they’re healthy uh they have a couple of of options where they could give them some time they can loan them to the Barracuda for um for rehab assignments uh for both these players. So maybe they can as a way to kind of draw it out and I I I I think it’s like five games or two weeks if I recall correctly somewhere around there. Uh where they can play on the barracuda before actually having to get processed with the Barracuda, but um it does still kind of mess with your roster a little bit there as well with uh where where if they’re down there. So my assumption is if once they’re healthy, both these players will most likely get placed on waiverss and you’re the hope is that during the season here when teams are kind of in the middle of it, less likely to kind of get claimed. They’re more likely just to kind of use your guys uh not that way they’re not kind of throwing guys in here at the last uh last second. So, uh, we’re going to look at what’s left to be decided, look at some of the decisions the Sharks have to make as they again try to get to their final 23. We’re going to look at all the kind of the bubble players here. Uh, and then we will make uh I’ll make my final 23 projection, which 100% will be wrong. Uh, plus my the my projected lines for Thursday’s game. So, uh, we’ll get to all that here in just one second. So, as as we’re recording this right now, uh the players still on the San Jose Sharks roster um as they kind of continue to trim things down. So Ethan Cardwell this the forward group here in alphabetical order. So Ethan Cardwell, Mwin, Celebrini, Ty Dandria, William Awin, Adam Gette, Barkley Goodro, Colin Graph, Philip Kersev, uh, Michael Misa, Zack Oschuk, Ryan Reeves, uh, Pavo Regenda because he still hasn’t cleared waiverss, uh, Jeff Skinner, Will Smith, Tyler Tofoley, Alexander Wenberg, and then defensively, Luca Canyone, Vinnie Deese, Sam Dickinson, Ryan Ellis, who of course is uh long you know as an IR will be on IR and not playing for the Sharks. Mario Ferraro, John Clingberg, Nick Ley, Timothy Ligrand, Shakir Muk Madull and Dimmitri Orlov and then the goalies Ascarov and Nadelkovich. So we kind of know the battles here, right? Uh so guys like Ethan Cardwell, you know, bubble guy right there. Um you know that’s a you know Zach Sachchuk bubble guy right there as well. I’m going to put Colin Graph in that same category among the forwards uh as as kind of a bubble guy right there just because of his ability like since he’s still waivers exempt uh he can go down to the NH he can go down um you of course you have Michael Misa who’s uh just like Sam Dickinson both these guys are either NHL or they have to go back to the OHL and I you know they we’re assuming they’re going to get their nine games. And just as a reminder with the nine games, uh the reason why it’s nine games is basically once they play their 10th game, their contract kicks in. So their first year of their entry level contract kicks in once they play their nine games since they both signed their contracts um before they turn 20, right? Michael Misa is 18. Sam Dickinson signed his last uh season as an 18-year-old. Sam Dickson’s contract slid last year. He was officially signed, but he played the entire season with the London Knights. So, his contract doesn’t start. Once they play that 10th game as an either an 18 or 19 year old, their contracts officially go into effect. They go towards their 50. Uh they like right the the clock starts ticking until those contracts expire. So, um, that’s why that nine games is such a big deal where it’s kind of that nineame audition. Reminder, a couple years ago, right, William Ecklan when after he was drafted, he played his nine games going then he went back to to Sweden. Then the following season, right, William played the entire season in the AHL until the end of the season where he played eight games in the NHL and then sent back to the AHL. Uh, so that way his contract wouldn’t kick in. That’s why William Mecwin, you know, it feels like William Mewin’s been on his ELC forever because they’ve slid his contract two years and that’s why William Mecwin’s entering the last year of his ELC and then next year, next season, of course, he’ll start his brand new three-year deal at you know what was it 5 whatever million. So, um, that’s that’s why that nine-game audition is big because if if Misa and Dickinson play well, right, the thought is that they’ll stick around uh and continue throughout their season. If they struggle, then, you know, they have to go back to the OHL because, uh, that’s that’s part of the CHL NHL agreement. So, um, but Hardwell though, right, of course, like he still is waiverss exempt. uh he can go back to the AHL without having to go through claims. Same thing with Zack O stopchuck. Uh both those guys waivers exempt. Uh so you you kind of feel like it’s with the way things have worked out. um where it does feel like those guys are probably going to be on the outside looking in especially because the Sharks didn’t make any other moves today to try on Sunday to try to clear roster spaces for them, right? Um and you assume the Sharks are going to probably take more defenseman, you know, kind of uh as many possible defenseman as possible, especially with Sam Dickinson and some of the other veterans that they have on the roster. It does feel like unfortunately for these guys who are waiverss exempt, they’re probably on the outside looking in. Now, if the Sharks have put a guy, you know, like Ryan Reeves or somebody else like that, um, like a Reeves or Dander would be the two that you’d most likely pick. If they put them on waiverss on Sunday, assuming that they would, you know, with the hope that they clear on Monday, then they could reass they could sign those guys to the Barracuda on Monday. that would probably have signified that some, you know, a guy like Cardwell or guy like uh, you know, stop truck is making the roster. But since they didn’t do anything else other than put Pavle Reenda, unfortunately, that’s probably where we’re going to be at. Um, defensively, again, if if the Sharks are, you know, like if they put Jack Thompson on IR as it looks like they’re going to, they don’t really have to do anything, right? because you can roll in with Vinnie De Arnes, Sam Dickinson, Mario Ferraro, John Clingberg, Nick Ley, Timothy Lldrin, Shakir Muk Mullan, uh, and Demetri Orout, that gives you eight, uh, which is what I think the Sharks are going to carry on their roster right now. um defensively and gives you a little bit of flex um it gives you like with Dickinson where maybe you try to stretch as we’ve talked about before you try to stretch out those nine games as long as possible where he’s you know not playing every game right away and they they’re trying to kind of ramp him up to be an everyday NHL player and just gives them a little bit more right a little bit more time to decide on Sam Dickinson and like that’s that would be my guess right now and and when Thompson gets back, you can kind maybe have a better decision on what you’re going to do with uh Sam Dickinson or you make a trade elsewhere. Like it just buys you some potential time here with with it. So that’s probably what we’re going to see defensively. Like it’s it’s, you know, and unfortunately like it’s that’s just kind of what it is. So, um yeah, I’m going to make my final 23 man projection here. uh give you all my forwards, give you who’s on IR, give you who’s out for the season, and plus who I my my roster, my guests at a roster for um uh for Thursday when the Sharks play the Vegas Golden Knights to start the season. So, uh we’ll get to all that here in just one second. The NFL season is here and FanDuel is an offer you don’t want to miss. Right now, new customers can bet just $5, get 300 bucks in bonus bets if you win. That’s right. Pick a bet, put down five bucks, and if it hits, you unlock $300 of bonus bets to use across the app. Uh, great thing about FanDuel gives you so many ways to play. Uh, they’ve got parlays where, you know, you can think a bunch of things are going to happen, whether in a game or just a bunch of different games. Uh, player props. If you bet the Darren Waller touchdown, you’re probably feeling really good. I’ve told you about it all week. What does Darren Waller do on Sunday? He scores a touchdown. And even follow the lines uh during the games. So maybe you got the Broncos coming back over the Eagles. You’re probably feeling pretty good. So uh whether you’re a casual fan or love diving into the stats, FanDuel makes the game day experience so much better. So what are you waiting for? Visit fanel.com to download the FanDuel app today and get started. I’m also super excited to tell you about my favorite pair of jeans brand doer. I’ve been living in their performance denim straight jeans and as fall is approaching, it’s time for new jeans, people. Uh, honestly, they’ve completely changed the game for me. Uh, I love my Der jeans because one, they look great, right? It’s very important that your jeans look good, but two, they feel great. Uh, they have five times the stretch of traditional denim. Uh, they’re stretchy without looking stretchy. Uh, they feel and they have the comfort of athletic wear, but again, give you that jean style, the best of both worlds. And there’s a reason why they called them the world’s most comfortable pants. Don’t take my word for it. Go try on a pair for yourself. Uh do or just open a store in Hayes Valley. You can feel the difference firsthand. Go check them out on 567H Street. Mention our promo code lockedonsf in store to get 15% off your first order. Or check them out online at shopdoerdue.comsf for 15% off. at shopdoer.comlocked SF. All right, let’s finish up here by going through the my official 23man roster projection here, which 100% I’ll probably get something wrong. So uh among the forwards uh McMelbury block Tyandria William Ecklan Adam God who had himself a really great preseason uh Barkley Goodro Colin Graph I think Graph gets it over um uh Ethan Cardwell because again I think Graph just gives you a little uh like he kind of gives you a lot of different things and not to say Ethan Cardwell does it but we’ve seen Graph do it at the NHL and like he’s already gotten a lot of PK minutes and he’s expected to be kind of what the Sharks one of the Sharks top pKers this year. Uh and again, not to say I don’t think Ethan Cardwell can’t do those things, but Graph has already done it right now. So, I think Graph gets the that spot right now. uh Phil Kersev who’s been playing topline minutes with or you know practicing with Celibbrin and Smith uh Michael Misa, Ryan Reeves, uh Jeff Skinner, Will Smith, Tyler to Foley, and Alex Wenberg. So I think they’re you’re going to go with 13 forwards would be my guess, right? Uh so 13 forwards, eight defenseman that gets you to 21 and then your two goalies get you to 23. this is what my what that’s I’m assuming that’s how they’re going to kind of go about it here. Uh so I don’t think there’s any surprises here. Um you know like I said if we’d seen like Tai Deandria or Ryan Reeves get put on waiverss on Sunday that probably opens up a roster spot for somebody else. But since they didn’t do that um I I feel like this is probably your group of forwards going into opening night. So, uh, defensively again, Vinnie Dees, Sam Dickinson, Mario Ferraro, John Clingberg, Nick Ley, Timothy Logger, Shakir Muka Madulan, Dmitri Orlov, uh, and then your goalies, Yaroslav, Ascrov, and Alex and Delulkovich. Uh, Jack Thompson kind of being that last man uh, who who just missed the roster. Um, again, probably again starting on IR and then when the Sharks when he’s healthy, the Sharks will make a decision where again trade somebody, put Thompson on uh through waiverss to try to get him to the Barracuda, which I’m pretty confident that he’ll he’ll slide through the Barracuda um and slide down to to the Barracuda. Like I I unless somebody has some like catastrophic injury at the exact same time, maybe that happens. But I do think like Thompson’s a pretty safe bet to get down to the Barracuda. Um, and then the goalies right know like that we’ve known that’s the goalie tandem since they traded for Nadulkovich like since July 1st uh or whenever the Sharks traded for Nadulkovich. Like we’ve known that’s been the goalie tandem. Like we knew that’s going to happen. Um, no surprises there. I think the big surprise will be just who starts on Thursday. Um, so but yeah, like those two guys, they’re going to split games. like that’s going to be your your your goalie pairing right now. So, uh probably for a good, you know, hopefully the whole season. So, um on IR, uh so Eigor Aison U and Jack Thompson, those will be short-term IRS right there. Um so, neither one of like once I think it’s 10 days that they have to miss uh before they can come back. Um out for the season. So not long-term IR two different things. So but loan couture Ryan Ellis and Carrie Price are going to be out for the that is all just dead cap money there. Um and as a reminder kind of quick difference between LTIR and and IR. So LTI if you have guys on there basically you cannot accumulate cap space for the trade deadline right and bas basically right now it as a quick reminder um money that you are under the cap space for that day. So if say whatever what’s the cap you know whatever the cap is right now 93 million or whatever um so the whatever money you are under the cap basically kind of just adds up and day every day every day every day. So uh right now the the sharks are projected deadline they have $2.9 million of cap space right now. uh it’s 95.5. Um the project the deadline space right now is 13 million. So they could basically bring in $13 million worth of contracts at the deadline. Not that the sharks are going to do that, but um for teams that like are, you know, playoff caliber teams, they they try to save up that money that way they can add a big player, right? If you’re an LTIR, you don’t get to save that money, right? You’re basically kind of with LTIR, you are over your limit of your cap space and you use this dead cap as like kind of a buffer, but the draw like so you can go over your your cap space, but you can’t save it. And now with the new LTI rules where you’re only allowed to if guys are on LTI for shortterm, you can only spend up to it’s about $3.9 million in cap space if if a guy’s expecting to come back. If a guy’s out for the season, you can use like their full cap space. So they did change the rules there a little bit. So like if the Sharks really wanted to like they could put uh Ryan Ellis, Logan Couture, and Carrie Price on LTIR. Um, and that would they would be able to spend like 20 what is I’m trying to do quick math here. Um, like $25 million over the cap, but the Sharks don’t need to do that, right? Like they can just utilize their cap space because they’re one, they’re not close to be like the $3 million away from the cap uh ceiling. And two, you expect them to be shipping out contracts, not bringing contracts in this this year. So, no need to do that. But um anyway, here is my game day lines for Thursday. Uh so Kurv celebrating Will Smith as line number one, William Aquin, Michael Miso Tower to Foley as your second line, Jeff Skinner, Alex Wenberg, Colin Graph on the third line. Really love that third line right there. Barkley Goodro, Adam Goddet, Ty Dandria, and you could switch Dandria with Reeves either way. uh it doesn’t really matter. Um pro but like DAR I thought had a pretty good preseason and not that Ryan Reeds didn’t either but it again you’re you’re splitting Harris here. It doesn’t really matter. So defensively Demetri Orlav Shakir Muk Mullan uh Mario Ferraro John Clingberg Sam Dickinson Timothy Lilliggram. So that would put Reeves Lety uh and then um uh Vincent or sorry Vinnie Dehornese, excuse me, as your healthy scratches. And then I think Nadulkovich starts on Thursday over Ascarov. Um Nadulovich was great this this preseason and I think you reward a vet like that. So, um, again, doesn’t matter. People don’t remember who like you don’t really remember who started, you know, the who was the starting goalie the opening night like two years from now. So, it doesn’t matter. But anyway, that’s what I think. Uh, we’ll see. Uh, we’ll react see how right I was on Monday night. Uh, see if the sharks make any other trades, do anything else to try to clear up some space. Uh, or at least clear up some more contracts as I think they should try to clear at least one more contract. give them some flexibility when it comes to waiverss. Um, but we’ll see what what Mike Grid does to get to his uh 23man roster. So, uh, make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast. And of course, you can watch on YouTube as well.
