X-FACTORS: Orlando Magic’s unsung players could determine their ULTIMATE fate
We know the stars will matter for the Orlando Magic, but who are the three X factors for the team and why they’re ready to step up today on Locked On Magic. You are Locked On Magic. Your daily Orlando Magic podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And you are indeed locked on Magic. Today is October 1st. It will be October 2nd, 2025. My name is Philip Rossman. I’m the senior writer over at Orlandomogic Daily.com, credentialed member of the Orlando Magicedia since the 2012 season. On today’s episode of Lockdown Magic, we’re going to go over three X factors to this season. players who aren’t stars whose performances and play will be vital to the Orlando Magic success. We’re going to get to them coming up here in just a moment. But first, we want to thank you again for making lockdown magic part of your day every day. No matter when you listen to us, whether it’s first thing in the morning, whether it’s right when we upload, we truly appreciate you making lockdown magic part of your day every day. You can make lockdown magic even a bigger part of your day by being one of our Orlando Magic dailies. Listening five days a week and on the weekends when we listen. Get in habit now. That’s what Trading Camp is for. Building good habits. It’s all part of Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day. At this point, we know who the key players are. Like there’s not a lot of mystery to this Magic team. And frankly, like if you are competing for a championship, if you are competing for something bigger than just trying to get through the season and see what you can do, you kind of know what you’re getting. Like really really the key at this juncture the key at this point is figuring out uh figuring out the degrees to what you’re going to get like we know Paulo Beno is going to be really good but is he going to be allNBA level good and if he is all NBA level good then all of a sudden the ceiling gets higher for those elite teams they know their stars will take them far, which rhymes, but and this doesn’t rhyme, but for a team like say the Denver Nuggets to go from a championship team back to a second round team, back to a championship team, it takes something extra. Again, Denver knows what they’re getting from Nicole Joic. The degree of what they get from Jamal Murray matters. The degree of what they would get from Michael Porter Jr. matter. Now it’s Cam Johnson. The thing that tipped them over to win that championship was contavius Cwell Pope was Bruce Brown was the backup center situation that they had. They come back the last two years. Jamal Murray isn’t as good. They were lean on Christian Brown. He steps up and they’re what, one game away from advancing to the conference finals and beating that seemingly unbeatable Oklahoma City Thunder team. That is the degree that we’re talking about. It’s understanding the player that may seem like he has a really small role, but his minutes and his ability to step up another level could be the thing that tips the Magic from merely a very good team. And and we do expect this Magic team to be a very good team, from a very good team to a potentially elite team. And obviously I think the place to start is with Anthony Black. You ask any player on the Orlando Magic last year, this year, whenever, and they will tell you Anthony Black could be a really good player. They will tell you we just want Anthony Black to be aggressive. When Anthony Black is aggressive, everything works out. And yet, we’re sitting here in year three, preparing for year three of Anthony Black. And we don’t entirely know who Anthony Black is and what his role could be, what his ideal role on a championship level team will be, and I I’ll sit here and say this just very very plainly, if Anthony Black is able to fill the sixth man role, and and that’s kind of the role I envision for him. If he is able to be an anchor player for the Magic’s bench groups, then the Magic go from, oh, this is a nice team to they can be an Eastern Conference champion. They can be an Eastern Conference finalist. Winning a second round playoff series. Like obviously like Paulo has got to play well, Fron has got to play well, but we’re not talking about the top end guys today. We we know what they have to do and we know the step up they have to take. But even if those guys make all NBA steps, Anthony Black is the kind of player that’s going to win the magic of playoffs game, win the magic of playoff series just by being the guy that other teams decide we’re going to leave open and he makes them pay. Entering his third season, it does feel like Anthony Black is due for a big leap. And and there’s some moderate buzz that that there everyone’s really excited about what AB can do. And AB continues to say all the right things. Continues to say, “I am trying to be more aggressive. I’m trying to be more assertive. I’m trying to hunt for my shots a little bit more.” He understands the things that are holding him back. And his teammates are all in his corner. Wendo Carter today at practice on Tuesday or Wednesday at practice said quote when A is on his game in my opinion he is one of the best guards in the league when he’s playing carefree mind when he’s just flowing and relying on his strengths and getting downhill attacking the basket shooting open threes not turning them down AB is a tough guard he’s tough to guard for anybody end quote I would bet that that is how most of the Magic players feel about Anthony Black but when you look at the numbers ers, you just see inconsistency. I know I’ve cited this look, he had a good season last year, 9.4 points per game, 3.1 assists per game, but you look at the splits between wins and losses, and you see a very different story. In 39 wins last year, Black averaged 10.7 points per game and shot 40.8% from three. In 39 losses, he averaged 8.1 points per game and shot 21.7% from three. That is essentially a correlation. I’m not going to sit here and say, “Well, when Anthony Black makes 40% of his threes, the Magic are going to win guaranteed.” But there’s a pretty strong correlation between wins and losses. And in the playoffs, ultimately he averaged 8.2 points per game. Shot 15.4% from three. Didn’t really step up in the playoffs. first playoff series, I usually like to give guys a little bit of a pass. But in his first full year in the rotation, like no questions he was in the rotation, fell out of the rotation as rookie year. First full year in the rotation, Black showed us a lot of good. Go back to that play in tournament win over Atlanta. He had 16 points off the bench. The Magic got the seven seed. Not merely because of Anthony Black. Cool. Anthony had a great game there, too. But in a game where both Paulo and Fran struggled, a a an elimination game, a postseason type game, a postseason game, a playoff type game, Anthony Black was someone who pushed the Magic to a big win. That’s the kind of player Anthony Black can be. That’s the kind of player the Magic need Anthony Black to be. And they need him to be that every night. The inconsistency, the win loss split, that has to go away. The Magic need an aggressive, assertive, confident Anthony Black every night if they’re going to be the team that they want to be. Now, this year will be a little bit different. The Magic don’t need a quote unquote sixth man, per se, or let’s that guy to heater off the bench. I do think that is something the Magic missing. I do think that might be something that they hunt for um in the buyout market at the at the end of the season toward the end of the season, something maybe they look for in the trade market. But they’re going to be able to go nine deep. As long as they’re healthy, they should be able to keep one of Paul Fron and Bane on the floor at all times. And again, the Magic the Magic know what they’re going to get defensively from Anthony Black. Anthony Black is one of the best defenders in the league. Uh like I really think I really think so. Is he all defensive team? Probably not. But he he is that caliber of defender. It’s getting the offense down. It’s getting his offense to match that defensive effort. It’s getting him to provide the same kind of statistical output every year. Getting making the highs higher, and the highs can be as high as they need to be, but raising that floor so his lows aren’t so bad. His lows aren’t so draining. And look, the Magic are a very by committee team, as Mr. Mosie likes to say. So, you go, the ball will find who it needs to find. But here’s the thing. When we get to the playoffs, when we get to the end of the season, when we get to these games, when you know your matchup inside and out, right now, Anthony Black is the guy you leave open. Right now, Anthony Black is the guy you dare to beat you. And that’s why Anthony Black playing well and reaching that next level, whatever it is. That’s why it’s so important to whatever the Magic are doing. That’s why it’s vital to everything the Magic are doing and that’s why he is one of the most important players on this team. He’s not alone. We’re going to dive into the starting lineup and talk about Wendell Carter coming up here in just a moment. But first, today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to our friends over at Pelaton. There are a lot of players that the Magic need to step up. Um, look, last year was a bad season for a lot of players. Had a lot of guys just not give the team everything that they need. And so the next step obviously is to kind of write the ship, get back on track, get back to where they need to be. And no player probably has to bounce back more than Wendell Carter. Um, and look, you could look at the roster. We know how important Paulo is. We know how important France Vag is. We know how important Jaylen Suggs is. We know how important Daisen Bane is. He’s a new toy. He’s the one they just brought in. All eyes right now are on the center position. If there’s an area that is next to be closely examined, the Magic looked at guard. You know, maybe point guard’s still under examination, but the Magic do what they’re going to do at point guard right now. The next big spot under examination is center. and whether Wendell Carter is the right guy for this team. Wendell Carter is the X factor, someone who could really tip this team over the top. Desmond Bane on the Kevin Oconor show last week on Yahoo Sports essentially said this that Wendell Carter is the guy that could change everything for this Magic team. He sets screens, he rebounds well, he can hit three-pointers. It’s just about the same thing as it is with Anthony Black, aggression and confidence. And Wendell Carter will be the first to tell you that he’s always had a little bit of a problem of kind of overthinking things, getting stuck in his own head and not kind of pushing the team forward. That’s always been a little bit of an issue for him. But he’s had a healthy offseason by all accounts. Whatever injury he was dealing with last year is gone. and he is at least seemingly as confident as he’s ever been. Again, proof will be in the pudding. We’ll see what he looks like when he gets on the floor. But it is pretty safe to say that this is a make orb breakak season for Wendell Carter. Now, you ask all the Magic players, and this was one of the big talking points at media day. Wendell Carter is a glue that makes a lot of things fit together. His versatility on defense, his ability to defend out on the perimeter. that they all said it like he cleans up mistakes defensively so that others can be overaggressive that they can they can play with a lot more freedom and physicality because Wendell Carter is going to cover their mistakes and it’s not in the same way that like Dwight Howard used to cover everybody’s mistakes. He’s not a huge shot blocker. Jamal Mos I think said it on Monday during media day that Wendell Carter often does a defensive work to prevent you even getting into a shot blocking situation. And there’s just all stuff that you just can’t see on a stat sheet. So whether you agree with it or not, again, Wendo Carter had a better defensive field goal percentage at the rim than Goabatz and Movager. Only Jonathan Isaac I think was better than him last year, which is expected. His defense is criminally underrated. And he was a vital piece of the puzzle and of the strategy the Magic had against the Boston Celtics in the playoffs. We can argue about that strategy. We can argue about whether the Magic were actually closer than the score indicated. Again, I think a fivegame series was fair. Boston was a better team. Boston made a lot of tough shots. They made a lot of the shots the Magic wanted them to take. And frankly, like the series is more about the Magic’s poor offense and how that created fast break opportunities. That’s how Boston got their threes. And we can rehash that story later. But Wendo Carter does things defensively that don’t show up and make this team click and work. Desmond Bane said it best like he liked playing with Stephen Adams. He likes having a big center that’s not looking for numbers, not looking for himself, is just looking to make the team better and make everything fit together better. And Wendo Carter is very much like that person. But the Magic aren’t the Grizzlies. They they don’t have the offensive firepower that the Grizzlies have. And so to have a season like Wendell Carter had last year certainly a detraction last year despite his relative health. He played a career-high games last year. Played like 56 consecutive games last year was the most consecutive games he played. Niskar he played 60 um he played how many games? Sorry let me let me get get that actual number. He played 61 He played 61 straight games. Played 68 games total last year. Heck of a season. But he averaged a career low 9.1 points per game. Added 7.2 two rebounds per game, about in line with his averages, and shot only 23.4% from three. This was after two seasons where he shot uh 35.6 and 37.4% from three. Now, Carter was dealing with an issue in his hand. He was, you know, we was we talked to him in the locker room a few times. He always had like some padding on it. He did say he was dealing with some issue and and he he said that the injury was worse than he let on than what anyone really knew. He was playing playing hurt, which kudos to him. You know, again, it’s probably wasn’t going to get better. He was better, more valuable on the floor even in in in his reduced fashion, but obviously the Magic needed shooting. Carter did say he started to kind of find himself again during the playoffs and he had a great playoff series, not just the defense that I was talking about, but 10.2 points per game, 10.8 rebounds per game. The only other Magic player besides Paulo and France to average double figures. I’d take that as a positive. Wendo Carter had a good playoffs. Let’s let’s not kid ourselves about that. But this has always been the thing with Wendell. This has been the story when he was in Chicago, some of the early days in Orlando, and now that, you know, you’re kind of figuring out his role now that he’s essentially the fifth option on offense. How do you get the most out of him? How do you get the most out of a player who’s very positionbased? He’s not trying to fly around and block shots. He’s not a menace in the paint. He’s someone people try to attack and find he’s a lot harder to move off a spot, but he’s not there to block shots. He’s got to beat you to the spot every time. How does that put a ceiling on your team? And I think that is one of the big questions for this season. I think that is one of the big questions that we’re asking and that we’re wondering and we’re curious about for the Magic this year because this is the next spot. This is the next spot we’re looking at, the next thing that we’re looking to improve. And Wendo Carter can do all these things. We’ve seen him do it. But now it’s about kind of stacking consistency. It’s about stepping up in the big moments and delivering in these big moments. And that’s the part we don’t know yet. Again, if there’s doubts about the Magic, it’s that they just haven’t done it. We don’t know if they have played, if they can play or if they have played at this high level. And you don’t know until you do it. Just plain and simple. You just don’t know. Regardless of the numbers, regardless of anything else, Wendell Carter is going to play a huge factor for the Magic this season. He is going to have a big role to play. And the Magic are right. Everyone who said this at media day is right. He is very much the glue that locks this team in place, that locks this team together and tells us whether this team is going to achieve its goals and whether this team is going to reach that pinnacle they’re trying to reach. Desmond Bay, I think, is right. Wendell Carter is a huge X-factor for the season. If he has the kind of season he had last year, the Magic again are going to fall short. Teams will leave Wendell Carter open at the three-point line. your pick and roll with your center is going to be out the door. But if he is more active, more energized, more engaged, more confident, makes a few threes, gets to the dunker spot a few more times, plays off of the the the spacing the Magic are suddenly going to have, then you got to start asking yourself, well, who do we leave open, and what do we give up? Just like Anthony Black, Wendo Carter is going to win or lose the Magic playoff game. Wendo Carter is going to be the difference in a playoff series for this team. And look, his defense is too valuable for him not to play, but if he can’t give you something on offense, then this season will end a little a lot shorter than the Magic wanted to. And that gets us to the next guy who I’m sure we will talk about here in the next couple days, but I want to give him the shout out now since we’re talking about X factors. What will the Taius Jones effect be? We’re going to get to that coming up here in just a moment. But first, today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to our friends over at FanDuel. You’re still kind of layering layering in the basics and and like we were talking among the media um and and someone asked, “Oh, do they do two days anymore?” And they really don’t do two a days anymore. And so like I want to I want to give like I’m giving two competing impressions right now. The first is that like these are the very basics you’re kind of layering in the what you’re trying to do in training camp. It’s the first time that everybody is required to be in the building. Um but having said that the reason why they don’t do two days anymore is not just because it’s in the collective bar agreement. It’s a lot of players are more committed now and they come in a few weeks early. They get to work with the coaches. they begin kind of implementing stuff during these mini camps that happen before the season, during these open gyms and pickup runs. Basic concepts are already laid in before you start training camp, before things officially tip off. And so, we’re still getting a little bit of the vibe of who this team is and and what they’re trying to do. Monday or Tuesday’s practice was very much about the basics, conditioning. Tuesday or Wednesday’s practice was still kind of making sure those defensive foundations are laid in place. Magic is starting to layer in some offense. As I mentioned, the big big big big big big impression coming from the Magic is that offensively they’re going to try and run a lot more. Um, again, they say that every year. We’ll believe it when we see it. But there’s definitely a sense that the Magic are going to try and pick up their pace a little bit and try and get out in transition. It was a big talking point from Jamal Mosley during the first day uh during media day. But I think the other impression that we’re getting is that Titus Jones is going to play a a pretty big role on this team. Now, if you’re watching like the Magic’s social media accounts and the and the training camp video that they’re putting in, Taius Jones is running with the starters. And I think it’s pretty safe to say that if Jaylen Suggs has to miss any time, Taius Jones is going to be the starter. Um, I think just again, I’m I’m very big on Anthony Black. I think Anthony Black maybe finish his games depending on how games are going. Um, but I think the Magic want, you know, trust Tyus Jones as a very like steady hand. Again, we saw last year how valuable Cory Joseph was. Taius Jones is a better version of Corey Joseph. A much better version of Corey Joseph. No offense to Cory. We love you, Corey. I hope hope the family is doing well. There’s just been this sense that like Taius Jones and and even Desmond Bane are bringing just this veteran know-how to the team. Now, they said this they said the same thing about Kavius Cwell Pope last year. And look, KCP did I I I want I I know we were all dissatisfied with how KCP played and the numbers and the shooting that he put up. KCP was a really positive uh impactor in that locker room and and there was a level of seriousness, especially during training camp. again. We did. We’ll never know. Paulo getting hurt five games in the season changed everything for the team. But very similarly, there is that sense that like Taius Jones just is a professional who knows what he’s bringing to the table and and knows like how to fit into the team even as he’s kind of learning what this team wants to do. Whatever you think about what the Magic are doing at point guard, Taius Jones is sort of a backs stop to it. He is someone that is just a solid game manager. Not going to get in the way. Get guys in the right spots. Assist to turnover, like the best assist to turnover ratio in the league. He’s not going to make mistakes. And that was a huge thing the Magic were after when they made this when they when they went after Taius Jones and when they finally got him. He has a lot to say and a lot that that’s going to be involved in this. Last year, of course, he averaged 10.2 points per game for the Phoenix Suns. 58 of 81 games that he played. pretty reliable. He’s averaging, let me get his averages. He’s averaging um they don’t have a average, so I’m not going to calculate. He’s averaging 68.2 games per season, which is pretty good. And that includes the 37 games in his rookie year when he was not really playing a lot. He shot 41% from three, 41.4% from three each of the last two seasons. He’s a career 37.8% three-point shooter. So, he’s going to give the Magic the shooting that they need. He averaged 5.3 assists per game, mostly, you know, again, with a lot of minutes coming off the bench, only 26.8 minutes per game. 7.3 assists per game the year before in Washington. The the whole the starting in Washington thing did not really work out for him. Like, he put up the raw numbers, but Washington was just really bad, but he’s widely considered one of the best backup point guards in the league. And so, again, the Magic don’t want to lean on him to start a whole lot. Um, I think that would be a that would be a deficit because he just be someone that you could attack on defense, especially if that happens in the playoffs. But Titus Jones is someone that’s just going to bring stability. And again, the same deal. This is the kind of thing that doesn’t feel very big, but wins you those games, those playoff games that have such tight margins that are determined on the smallest, tiniest things. I think there is a real Taius Jones effect. I think there is a real uh a real thing that Jones is going to be very good in his minutes. And the hope I think is that you know again Jones fights on defense when he’s been on good defensive teams when he was with Memphis because it wasn’t Washington and Phoenix. when he was on Memphis, defense definitely slipped a little bit, but he fought and he competed. And the Magic have a defensive system and a defensive environment that I think will cover for him. Will they be elite defensively? Will they be the best defensive team with him on the floor? Probably not, but they’ll be serviceable and especially if he can add some offense. And again, he’ll play a lot with Fron, I think. So, that’ll help in that department. the stability that Taius Jones brings and and the veteran knowhow that he’s already sharing with the Magic’s young guards, whether it’s Jace Richardson, whether it’s Anthony Black, those that’s going to be a real big deal. So you take that with everything else that that the Magic have going for them and and and you can see the vision like you can see clearly how the Magic can get to the Eastern Conference Finals can be a surprise team in the East or a team that does a lot better than people think. I I say this all the time and I just I just want to keep repeating that. The playoffs are determined on the tiniest fractions. The smallest things determine whether you win or lose in the playoffs. Especially the deeper you get into the playoffs. We saw like the Pacer. If the Pacers don’t do that incredible comeback in game one, New York’s probably in the NBA finals. It’s it’s little little things and you’re going to need your role players to step up in big ways. If the Magic are gonna be a team that sneaks their way into the finals, sneaks their way into the Eastern Conference Finals, just does better than PE that did people’s wildest imaginations, it’s not going to be because of Paulo and France. We expect them to get better. We expect them to to to utilize the tools they have now. It’s going to be because of players like Anthony Black, Wendell, Carter, and Taius Jones and the roles that they play and what they provide this team. Again, I I I will I will say this all year long, so I’m sorry if I’m repeating it too much or if I’m getting way too ahead of myself or if you’re going to be tired of me saying this. The Magic are going to win a playoff game because of Anthony Black. The Magic win a playoff game because of Wendell Carter. The Magic will win a playoff game because Taius Jones does something that or plays better than we expect him to. Those are three of your 16 wins right there. Um, these players are really important and them stepping up that is the biggest X factor to the season. I want to thank you all again for listening to today’s episode of Lockdown Magic. Isnt that why they drafted Jett Howard to be the instant offensive guy shooter that wasn't Anthony Blacks game or strength the Magic have a bad history of giving up on guys too soon to have then do well other places give ths kid a chance he was a lottery pick
, I've watched ab play live and also watch the highlights of him. I have seen him create and get downhill that reminds me of Penny and Derrick Rose. He has the potential to be so much better if he could get out of his own way.
With that being said I think that this year he is going to step up. Not only because it's his third year, not only because the teammates have confidence in him, but from all of the interviews that I have been seeing the team is raving about Jace Richardson. Raving about his confidence his skills and his shooting. Jase trying to play his way onto the floor. And I think that is going to elevate AB his confidence as he has some competition for playing time.
Mose and weltman both have said it they are going to put the players on the floor that contribute to winning. So all of those rotation players need to step up their game to be part of that nine man rotation
