Jackson Lacoma defenseman Donnie just hit the jackpot. Uh eight years 9 million per year $72 million. My goodness. Broke onto the scene. I This is This last season was his third season, but had a real breakthrough last season. 40 45 points, but man, he doesn’t scream 9 million. Luke Hughes got 9 million. What’s going on? Everybody’s getting 9 million and more. Speaking of which, John Shannon joins us now from the 100% hockey podcast, 100% Canucks podcast. John, thanks for doing this, sir. How are you? Not making 9 million. Close. Yeah. I don’t think so. That’s not what we’re hearing. Well, well, um, you know what? I I’ll tell you what, the the Lome deal should be no surprise after Luke Hughes signs. Mhm. Yeah. Because in many ways this week, and and I I’ve talked to a few people about this. Um, the Caprioff signing with $17 million, maybe not near as aggressive as the Luke Hughes deal. Mhm. Luke Hughes deal for a guy who has less than a 100 games to me is is a lot of money for that for for paying for potential. Uh and that’s exactly once once Hughes signed then I you know the the comparables for Jackson Lome Yeah. uh came home to roost and that’s exactly what happened. So uh 9 million per for Luke Hugh same thing with Jackson Lome. Okay, this is an old-timer question here, uh, John, but, uh, what do you think’s going through Bobby Y or’s mind right now? Wow. Well, I I I think that first of all, I think he he would have hoped that there was arthoscopic surgery when he played. There’s that. That would probably that probably would have been more important. Um but uh you know every one of these guys every one of these guys should be thanking Bobby Y or for what he did for the game just as they should be thanking Wayne Gretzky for what they did what he did for the game. But you know you you know it’s difficult to look back and say that there has to be bitterness. But I’ll tell you what Bobby or when you consider the amount of money he didn’t make versus what he meant for the game of hockey uh it’s it’s truly amazing. Yeah. I I seem to remember John Bobby your signing a $1 million deal over five years and it was a big big deal uh back then. Hey, listen. He was offered or his agent was offered 20% of the Boston Bruins ownership. Wow. And the and the offer never got to Bobby. Yeah. And that’s how he ended up in Chicago. Uh, John, Conor McDavid, all these numbers being thrown around and and and given out to to players who don’t have the resume that he has. So many people that we talked to talk about uh Conor McDavid, despite the Capri off situation in Minnesota, long-term, so many people say they expect him to sign shortterm in Edmonton. What about you? Well, I I I I think that’s probably the most logical situation to have him sign for three to four years. You know, at his age, um with we know the cap’s going to what is it, Rick? 103 next year. Yep. Probably 114. I’ve actually been told by somebody yesterday, wouldn’t be surprised that 114 could morph into 125. Wow. Um, so you know, for someone who is deserving of 20% of the cap, uh, why would you lock in short term if you believe in yourself and and you can stay healthy and at the age of 33 perhaps Conor McDavid could even make more money on another deal in his early 30s. It, you know, there is some logic to that. Here here’s the thing about Conor McDavid and and I think this has become pretty obvious now. It’s not about the money. Yeah. Because he he can walk in and say this is the dollar figure and the Oilers would match. I don’t think it’s about the term. I think if he said he’d sign for two years, I think they’d take it right now just to get, you know, end up knowing that they have him for three more years for sure. Um it’s about winning and can he can he win the Stanley Cup? What Conor McDavid does not want to become, I’m gonna pull a name out of the hat for you, is he doesn’t want to become Brad Park. He doesn’t want to become Marcel Dion. Yep. He doesn’t want to become the greatest player never to win the Stanley Cup. And that’s what he’s trying to assure in Edmonton first. If he can be assured that the Oilers are going to win the Stanley Cup somehow someway, then there is no issue to be made in Edmonton. Hey John, so Luke uh Hughes signs in New Jersey and then we automatically Quinn gets tied into this story. This story is but the story is not going to end and it’s not going to end until Quinn Hughes signs in Vancouver or tells the Conucks to move him. But that could be months and months and months away. But this story is just not going to die. Well, I don’t think it’s going to exist this year at all. You know, I don’t I don’t think this is a factor for the 2526 season at all. This is something for next summer uh when the Conucks can actually sign him after July 1st next year. uh and then then the talk should really heat up. Uh the fact that we are talking about it so much for this season is rather amazing. I I think uh it it doesn’t make much sense because there’s nothing I mean Quinn could walk in tomorrow and say I want to stay here and sign but they can’t sign him. Can’t sign him. So, so you know this Pat B presaw, Jim Rutherford, Quinn, the whole management team. I mean, we know they’re talking. They they have they have a great relationship. They’ve had a good relationship for years, Brie Rutherford and Patrick Alvine. So it’s this is just waiting and waiting and waiting and filling time talking about it at this point almost almost as almost like the McDavid thing in Edmonton because I think we know where everything stands and it’s now going to be up to the player at a certain point to decide but he can’t even decide until next summer and can’t even put it on a piece of paper until next summer, you know. who no one talks about is Kyle Connor in Winnipeg and he he’s such a wonderful player. His contract’s up and he’s probably looking at 10, 11, 12 million a year. You know, can Winnipeg keep him? You know, they’ve got the richest owner in the country, but you know what’s going to happen there? That is a super hockey player who needs a big raise to stay in Winnipeg. By the way, so does Adam Lowry. Y um but Adam Lowry’s injured right now. I and I I fully suspect that the Lowry contract will get done. I I think I think the Connor deal gets done in Edmond in Winnipeg as well. I I really do. All right. Kyle Kyle Kyle Connor um I think loves playing in Winnipeg. I think that what the Jets have been able to do in the last three years is create a positive environment for the teams and the team and the players. Uh, and I think that they feel that they have something special going on in Winnipeg and Kyle Connor’s a big part of it whether it’s 10, 11, or 12. Again, I I I wonder in Kyle’s situation, does he bet on himself and say, “Okay, listen. I I’ll take a four-year deal and then early 30s when the cap is even higher than we expect, then he can go back and then even become a more rich person than he will be at the end of this contract. Yeah, I’m glad you brought up the name Brad Park. Before I let you go, uh, November 1975, young Donnie at the Coliseum, Brad Park playing on the because it was Brad Park’s first game with the Boston Bruins after being traded from the Rangers for Phyllis Bazto. Brad Park and Bob Yor played together with for a short period of time. The famous story of that the famous story of that trade, Donnie, of course, is that Phil Zto trashed his room at the base. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. So, and I think Grae Grapes was the one who had to go tell him. Yes. I think Harry was afraid to tell him. So, Grapes had to go up and and tell Phil that he was traded. And he says, “I don’t mind being traded, just not to the Rangers.” Yeah. Yeah. And he got traded to the Rangers. Brad Park and Bobby Y didn’t play very many games together, but at that point, at that point, to have the two best defenseman on your roster at the same time would have been electric. Yeah. I think the story went that he brought Bobby Y or Cherry brought Bobby Y or into the hotel room with him and then Espazito said that if just don’t tell me I’m traed to the Rangers and then Don said Bobby go stand by the window because if he if because if I get rid of the Rangers I’m jumping out the window. Something like that. But uh Bobby Yor and Brad Park together is is is mind-blowing. Thanks for this John. All right, boys. The only other thing at the Bay Share was Howard Hughes was living in the penthouse. Don’t you remember that as a kid? Well, he he didn’t he rent out the top two floors for like a year. He loved Vancouver. Alleg allegedly, right? Yeah. Nobody ever saw him. That’s right. How do you know? Well, yeah, but apparently there was a barber who would cut his hair. Although the stories of with Howard Hughes, he never did cut his hair. There’s some barber in Vancouver who knows the story well. Wow. Anyway, maybe we’ll find him one All I know is I remember on Easter vacation we used to always go to Vancouver and we would drive by the bay shore and my mom and dad would point there’s where Howard was just standing. Wow. Wow. And no one saw him except for the barber. John, thanks for this. Cheer boy.
100% Hockey Host John Shannon joined the guys and shared his thoughts on the Luke Hughes contract extension announced earlier this week and if the talk around Quinn will ever die down.

I'm skeptical of these 'cap is rising' contracts being sustainable – but good for the NHL and teams if they have certainty on where all that money is coming from…
Dhali doesn't watch jackson lacome. What a surprise. Best young defenceman in the nhl not named hutson.
How TF is LaCombe a comparable lmfao. Kids played 7 less games than Luke and has 33 less points. Luke also played through injury last season, putting up better numbers. Huge over pay by the Ducks. Comical
How about the Canucks targeting Calle Jarnkrok from the Maple Leafs and eventually Adrian Kempe from the Kings? Although 33, Jarnkrok has a projected 61% WAR percentage, and I heard the Leafs are trying to unload him due to being top-heavy in forwards. Adrian Kempe has a projected 93% WAR percentage and right now is only on a 2 x 5.5 Million Cap Hit.
Luke Hughes does not have ‘less than 100 games.’ He’s played 155 games.
if nylander didnt drive up the market petey would be signed for 8 to 9mill….kaprizov just drove it up again. meanwhile the 4th liners make crap.
Let's complain some more about Hughes before he is allowed to even sign a contract
Quinn Hughs contract is a non issue.
Weak local media.
The Hughs contract is a positive thing.
We have the best Dman on the planet locked up for 2 years.
If he doesn’t want to stay long term then we can ask a kings ransom for him.
Likely the team that wants him will have to make the room for his salary and roster changes.
Lining up three brothers is not going to be easy.
So the chances are Hughs would sign a bridge deal with an easy escape clause.
