FIRST TAKE | Stephen A. GOES CRAZY on Yankees on brink of ELIMINATION, Blue Jays lead 2-0 in ALDS

All right, that was Toronto star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hitting the first postseason grand slam in Blue Jay’s history as they go up two games in the best of five divisional series against Stephen A’s Yankees SA with the series going back to the Bronx. How worried are you about this Yankees team right now? What do you mean worried? I mean the funeral has already been arranged. The epitap is being We might as well write the damn eulogy. Do y’all know that Toronto in the first 14 innings of this series have out had outscored the Yankees 22 to one? 22-1. They’ve got more home runs than strikeouts in this series. They’ve already hit eight home runs in the first two games to the Yankees one. Okay. And they’ve only struck out seven times. The Yankees erra against Boston was 1.33. with Heel and Max Freed, you know that $218 million man that the Yankees were so proud to get. Their ERA is over 14. They are getting annihilated, romped, a thorough ass kicking. And once again, once again, we’re learning that when it really, really counts, the Yankees come up short when it comes to pitching. I can’t even look at Judge and Stanton and Bellinger and Vulpey and these brothers because guess what? When you’ve got the your pitchers coming out there and stinking up a country, I mean the the stench in Kent throughout Canada was felt. I mean, they didn’t care cuz they were loving it. It’s just so embarrassing and it’s so disheartening. You haven’t won a World Series since 2009. No baseball franchise has ever won more World Series than the New York Yankees at 27. But we know it’s not going to be another one anytime soon because once again, another season has come and is on its way out with the Yankees not having the pitching it needs. It’s embarrassing what they’re doing. They are getting their asses kicked. It’s really bad. Yeah. Aaron Judge says he’s not worried about it. We’ll have to see how that one turns out. Back to the um it’s it’s almost emblematic of what of part of the Blue Jays success this year for sure. At times Vlad hasn’t done it or Bobette been injured and it’s been those complimentary players that have made a big difference. And by the way too, we’re watching all these runs last couple days. You remember them the last the first two months of the season? They couldn’t hit any homers to save their life. There was offensively making a ton of contact. But you’re looking at Vlad. Vlad only had what 12 up until the first half was guys like Dol Vo. But was was this what they were in? Bar had 20 bombs and 248 at bats. It’s unbelievable. Yeah. And and you said something in our production meeting about look at look at this slug lead. Just a prime example of how you cannot judge a book by its cover because you look at him and you wouldn’t think this is one of the elite defenders in center field. Naz, correct me if I’m wrong. Is he the most elite defender in center field since 2022? You’re looking at the best defensive center fielder in the game. Oh, by the way, he caught. Yes. Well, he’s built like a catcher, man. He profiles like a left-handed and he has made the concerted effort to eliminate going the other way with anything. He is on the plate and he is dog hooking balls down the right field line. By the way, one last thing, he can he can handle lefties, too. He’s one of those guys 60 against lefties, man. Keeps you in the lineup every day. But you guys start looking around. I If you’re Toronto, stay humble. But that’s right. It’s because look, it can change. I mean, Aaron Judge hits a jamshot homer that short porch in right field tomorrow night. Things can change instantly in that series. Another single. Judgy needs a Vlad moment, though. He had a chance. It was two nothing. Face is loaded. 34 coming up. And the last team to come back from O2, the New York Yankees against the former Cleveland Indians. I believe that was in 2017. Let’s go back to Saturday. Show Otani getting his first start as a pitcher. U nine strikeouts. JT Riomuto got a triple off of him overall. What did you think? I mean, by the way, this was huge, right? Again, the fact he’s making his first postseason start. He gave up the three runs early on. And I’m thinking to myself, okay, what’s going to happen in that ballpark as well, right? And then what does he do? He just goes ahead and settles in. There was one at bat there. I think it was a 3-2 pitch at I know where you’re going. Schwarber just snaps off this huge breaking ball. Like I’m talking that’s pitch number three in the arsenal, right? And especially with two strikes. That’s not his two strike weapon. And you’re just looking around going, “Hold on. Are you kidding me with that pitch?” Even Schwabble walked off was just what what did he show you, Dro? The wipe out breaking ball, the ability to punch out four times and still get on the bump and dominate. And I’m telling you, the more and more I watch his wind up and the more and more I watch him go through and take starts, God, does he remind me of Josh Beckett. Oh yeah. Yeah. There’s a lot of Josh Beckett in his in in the way he’s coming at you. Mechanically, it’s that sway here and that boom. And it’s forcing with He’s the greatest player of all time. Absolutely. I And I don’t understand why people uh feel like that’s enough. Sanchez has got his number. He don’t he’s not saying his name. There was a little like overthrowing right after the three runs. He came back out and all of a sudden trying to then he just settled back down and just again well part of the comeback as this is something that he is prone to do especially this time of year. GK Hernandez is going to go down as one of the best living postseason performers of his generation. Good for him. And how do you explain what he does in the postseason? I think you go back to to what Derek Jeter said about the prepared guy it the game moves slow the unprepared it moves fast and you have to in in in that environment you either want that moment or you don’t and I’m being honest with you being in a postseason as long you can see in people’s eyes there’s a few guys on in the dugout that that really probably would rather pass on having that moment you know what too PK eats it up and by the way he’s set in the front hip He thinks I don’t see that little move he’s doing bang right before he goes. But it’s unbelievable. I tell you what though, is he one of those dudes, man, that you’re getting into July, you’re getting up to hit, you’re glancing up at the big board and you’re looking at, man, I’m hitting 199. I’m like, I don’t get That’s what I’m saying. He gets to the playoffs, he’s like, let’s push that all aside. Here we go. It’s almost a 200 point difference when you look at what he does in the regular season and what he does in the postseason. I was literally doing math on my erra every time I gave up a run because you look at big picture 6 months but you get to tournament baseball you care about you just you’re free and easy there are a variety of reasons why the Dodgers are so difficult to deal with gay is one but Tayaskcar Hernandez didn’t really have a great season you know he was I actually yelled at Tioscar during this game but when JT room he’s got nine RBI so far this postseason I know what play you’re talking about the the Rio Mutoo triple. I mean, he could say whatever he wants, he decided to just let that ball go to the wall and for it to be a triple. What are you talking about? I mean, this right here. Yeah. Yeah. What was And just when you want to get frustrated, just when you want to pull him aside and say, “What are you doing?” Right. Not that it would have mattered. Both runs are still scoring, but he keeps real mute though on second. He decides to step up and hit a three-run oppo bomb. and he does it time and time again. You got to take the good with the bad with Teao. He’s got an infectious personality, but he lives for the big moment. And what a swing of the bat. As I was sitting there, that game was all Philly. Pure domination by Sanchez. It just screams to why the Dodgers are so good. There’s no panic in that dugout. You got to play nine clean innings to beat him. He now again, he did get a little I don’t know if we got a shot here. Al Farah has given one of these, which is just part of the game these days. But you still got to execute too. You know what I mean? Get on your belly and keep that front end. Oh, for sure. Could clearly as you take a look in here, most RBI’s in the first three games of a single postseason. Your boy Nomar had 10 back in 98. Reggie Sanders 20 years ago had 10. Uh, and now Teoscar Hernandez looking to add to that total as game two of that series. Couple of lefties in Philadelphia tonight. Jesus Lazardo, Blake Snell. That is your pitching matchup. in boy. That is a

  1. I'm a Jay's fan and a born and raised Torontonian – BUT Stephen drives me nuts. His put down of the Yankees is AWFUL.
Until the Jays keep and keep killing it for GOOD… I'll always wait until the fat lady sings.

  2. This is all happening with out there best hitter and the best hitter in game in bichette. Also doing it without a guy who hit 44 bombs 100+ RBIs last year and was top 4 in league in homers .

  3. “Haven’t won a World Series since 2009”….I’m sorry…as a Toronto sports fan…is that supposed to be a long time and make people feel bad for them??? 😭😭 I’m over here staring in 30 years since a World Series win or 58 years since a Stanley Cup like wut 😂😭

  4. Remember when america was bragging to canada that they cant win at their own sport? Even though most cup winners are canadians?

Shoes on the other foot now

  5. The Jays have great defence. Something that’s been overshadowed by their offence. Five gold glovers started game 2. And Clement is bound to get one this year. Pitching has to stay solid.

  6. Stephen, ever since George passed they haven’t won….and it might sound silly but doing away with his rule of no facial hair will be the equivalent as Bostons Babe Ruth curse!!!!!

  7. If the Jays advance Yankee fans should root for the Jays because the great Don Mattingly is a bench coach with the team and he's never won a World Series. He deserves to get a ring.
