It is my pleasure to welcome back to the show the co-host of Lockedon Mammoth, Robin Leano and uh Robin. Exciting times for the Utah Mammoth. Going to un, you know, play their first regular season game under the new name and yet there’s issues with the name yet again. Fill us in on what’s going on and where we’re at. Yeah. So, I this is something that has been kind of uh slowly turnurning over this summer. Uh there was a complaint initially filed by Mammoth Hockey uh which is a a a hockey bag equipment company that’s based in Portland, Oregon. Uh who put they sent a cease and desist to the Utah man saying, “Hey, you can’t use this. Uh you can’t use it. There’s going to be some confusion.” Back in August, Utah responded with their own with actually a lawsuit saying, “No, we own the trademark. We actually have the legal right to use this. There’s no there’s going to be no confusion.” slowed a little bit until then, but now we have we have a response back from Mammoth Hockey once again where they actually are filing for a preliminary injunction against the Utah Mammoth saying asking the court to essentially tell the Mammoth, hey, you can’t use the name right for now until we have something finally settled. You can’t sell any merch. You’re you we want you just to stop right now. And when are we expecting to hear something from the court with regard to a preliminary injunction or some kind of ruling? Uh that I you know I can’t tell you. I think it’s that that’s something that can certainly take a while. I mean with the preliminary injunction it could take you know we could hear about it today or we can hear about it in like six months from now right? Uh it’s it’s it’s all very complicated and I can’t really say exactly what I think is going to happen uh Gil because well I mean look I’m not a lawyer. I never passed the bar. We never went to law school. So, I can’t tell you some of the outcomes, but um what I think it seems to be what the Utah Mammoth want to do or likely will tried to do in this case is go for a settlement scenario because they do not want to re they don’t want to go through any scenario in which uh either a they lose any goodwill or b uh they have to change the name again. Yeah. No, that would be very costly obviously and I would expect a settlement is usually what happens and Mammoth Hockey will accept however much money they negotiate out and the Mammoth will probably be able to continue to use the name at whatever the cost may be. Uh I’d be shocked if they had to change their name again. Yeah, it would uh I I would be too. But I I will say this. I do like you know I think you one has to understand where Mammoth Hockey is coming from. Um and let me give everyone a preface of what their argument is. Their argument is the confusion because one it’s a hockey bag company versus the hockey team. But two, uh, they’re arguing that a, you know, like an Islanders fan isn’t going to want to buy a bag if it has the name of a rival, you know, of a rival on them, right? So they’re, so they’re, that’s what they’re making the argument like, why would I want a bag? Why would I want a bag that says Mammoth on it if I if I cheer for the Golden Knights? Why would I want to whatever it might be? And I can understand that to an extent. Absolutely. And like like we’ve both said, I think negotiated settlement is the most likely outcome under the circumstances. So I know you’ll keep an eye on that throughout the coming weeks and months. Uh Robin, how about the preeason so far, training camp? Who has stood out? What what has struck you most about this team, both good and bad? Yeah, you know, there is a lot going on with this uh with this team. we’re seeing a lot of uh rookies trying to fight their way in, trying to find for a roster spot and and there’s not very many spots available. You know, there is uh you know, I would I would say like for the most part, the starting lineup is set, but there’s like you know, there’s extra skaters you can fight in. So like a spot for the seventh defenseman is up for grabs. The spot for the you know the you know 13th and 14th forwards can be up for grabs. Uh, and I will say to that end, the two guys who have been coming in, um, first going to be first year in the North American League coming in from the KHL and Daniel Boot and Demetri Shimichev have really impressed. I think Daniel Boot even more so on my end. I maybe it’s because I pay attention more to forwards than I do to defenseman, but uh it’s I’ve really liked how he has played and I’ll add I I really feel like Vick Fanichek who was acquired over the off season um in a in a free agency signing has really also been very impressive that he had a game against the Los Angeles Kings that just looked really really good. Um, which honestly I feel like if Carell Velka doesn’t really improve as much as he did as as as he has been during this preseason so far, I would be interesting to see if there’s a uh potential battle for a starter spot. Interesting. Interesting. And And how close do you think we are to that based on the preseason? Uh, I mean, we still we still have to give uh Veggie, as we call him, uh, some uh some leeway. I I feel like uh he because he is a starter. I mean, he’s got starter money. Um, and he there will be uh they will give him the benefit of the doubt. They’ll give him those they’ll give him his time. They’ll give him whatever he needs. Um, but it seems that if there is if there is any shed of doubt, that’s where they can bring in Vanichek, who has been impressive so far. So, we’ll see how long it’s going to take. I, you know, I can’t really give any timeline because that all really depends on if Carell Velka is going to actually come back to his former self from last year or seem if he’s going to just stay stacking as he has so far this preseason. So, what are the keys to success? This team improved last year, still on the outside looking in when it came to the playoffs, but in the ballpark, in the conversation until very late in the season. What it what is necessary for this team to break into the playoff party? Yeah. So, there’s a couple of things that I really want to see this team do. Uh, one is to clean up the game a little bit. Last year they won they were among the one of the most penalized teams in the National Hockey League regularly racking up the penalty minutes and some of them Gil really were unnecessary penalties too many men penalties uh or delay of game penalties that really are fundamental issu fundamental penalties that you just do not take. They’re just you know you know for lack of a better term dumb, right? Um so that’s one. and two is the defense needs to tighten things up. Last year it last year was hard to really guess because they went down like 10 defenseman deep because they were missing Marino, they were missing jersey, they they just kept going down of all of injuries. So now they have a healthy D for now. Fingers crossed, right? Um but they still need to tighten things up. There are some issues like Mikachev. I bang my head every time I see him go through uh middle center ice stretch passes that easily get turned over and create threeon-one scenarios and those are things that I’d like to see the defense clean up and a as far as are there players who you think are ready to take a big step forward this year? I mean, yeah. I mean, I will I mean, I will say that I feel like there is going to be a different amount of line juggling, but I do feel like there’s going to be a couple different players who I feel like will work really well together during the preseason. We got a chance to see Dylan Gunther and JJ particular together. And I feel like with those two together, it would be unbelievable. I feel like those two are going to be another step up. Dylan Gunther’s already made a step up. I feel like with them two together, we’ll make a even bigger step. Logan Culie is going to be bound for another breakout year. He’s in a he’s in a contract year. He’s going to be due for an extension. And I know he’s going to want to get he’s going to want to get as close to uh to Kuro Capri off money as he can. He’s not going to get that high, but he wants he he wants to get close. I’m sure he does. Absolutely. 1. This whole naming professional teams is getting ridiculous. How can you mistake an overpriced cooler company (Yeti) or a company that makes hockey bags (Mammoth)? GMaB!!!

  2. the sooner this pathetic franchise folds the better. no one cares about utah hockey teams, no one cares about utah. they'll be like the jazz, a mediocre team playing in a pathetic arena in a city players don't want to play unless you drastically overpay for them.

  3. I read a recent article about this. That Mammoth Hockey bag company, hasn't fully copyrighted the name Mammoth. For some reason, their active with the name in 47 states, including Utah. Dunno how they managed to do that. But it is going to be a problem for the team. They do got that option, to pay money to them to own the name. Its concerning cuz, now they want to get a payday.

Since they active with the name in Utah, and they wanna sue for them to stop using our team name. This is a sticky situation. They might want to work it out.

Like the Golden Knights did with the Army. Have some adult discussions, so we can keep our team name!!
