Will Atlanta Falcons EXPOSE Buffalo Bills’ New Weaknesses After SHOCKING Week 5 Loss?
The Patriots beating the Bills in week five might have just ruined any chance for the Falcons to pull off the upset next Monday night. [Music] You are Locked On Falcons, your daily Atlanta Falcons podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Welcome back everyone to another illustrious episode of the Locked On Falcons podcast, your daily Atlanta Falcons podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. And on today’s episode, we’ll be getting into a sort of general overview of the Falcons upcoming week six matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. I’ll share my thoughts on what I observed, some general observations from the Bills uh loss to the Patriots on Sunday Night Football in week five uh last night as I’m recording this on Monday morning or Monday afternoon. Um, and we’ll talk about the importance of AJ Terrell’s potential return to the Falcons defensive game plan against the Bills, as well as, you know, maybe Michael Penn can borrow from his 2024 draft mate and Drake May and and maybe get a little bit of that magic that was instrumental in the Patriots getting that win. But before we get there, guys, I should introduce myself. I’m none other than Aaron Freeman, the humble host of this podcast. I’ve been covering the Atlanta Falcons for almost two decades. Formerly at faulfans.com. RIP. Still going strong uh on this podcast. And I think each and every one of you that go strong with me as everydayers. That means you make this humble podcast your first listen each and every day. And all you got to do to become an everyday is subscribe or follow for free on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcast to get the latest episode as soon as it is available. So again, this is going to be more of a general overview. We’ll obviously get into more of the nitty-gritty later this week when we get into a crossover Thursday with locked on Bill’s host Joe Marino. But, you know, I know talking with several of the Locked on Falcons insiders Sunday evening as well as seeing some of the tweets Sunday evening, you know, in this very stress-free Sunday that we all had because the Falcons were not playing due to their by-week. But, you know, I know there was a lot of Falcon fans expressing apprehension over the potential of the Patriots beating the Bills because they were hoping that, oh, the Bills will beat the Patriots and go into week six overconfident and maybe we could catch the Bills sleeping. But now that they’ve lost to the Patriots, they’re going to be hungry. They’re going to come out there firing on all cylinders and therefore you’re more likely if you’re the Atlanta Falcons to get a better version of the Buffalo Bills in week six than you would be if they were coming off of a win. And I certainly understand that sentiment. Um the Bills are not a team that has been known to lose two games in a row very often. uh especially uh in the last five seasons since Josh Allen became Josh Allen, which you know that became the case in 2020. Uh starting in 2020 and has been the case for the last 5 years. Looked it up today. The Bills are 17-5 over that 5year span in a game immediately following a loss. Uh so they win over 75% of the time the following after losing a game. and you know they’re 3-1 when it’s a home loss and they follow that up with a road game. So they’re 3-1 on the road which they will be next week uh or you know on Monday night next Monday night uh against the Falcons following a home loss to the Patriots. So again 75% chance based off of those numbers over the last five years uh that the Bills come out you know and play a winning game of football. Now, you contrast that with the Falcons, you know, success and failure. You know, they’ll be coming off uh their by-week. They’re two and three over the last five years following their by-week, although they’re 1 and one when they’re coming, you know, over that same span. Uh when they’re playing a home game coming off the by-week, uh they’re 4-4 overall, you know, in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. uh coming off their by-week. You know, the Falcons just had a home win against Washington. Uh and you know, they’re three and three over the last five seasons when they follow a home game against a home win. Uh and so essentially, you know, any way you slice it, the Falcons are basically got 50/50 shot uh in terms of winning this game. Uh and so they’re just a normal team while the Bills are an exceptional team uh under these circumstances. And so we’ll see if the Falcons can kind of change the narrative. Obviously get a upset win uh in this matchup. You know, I don’t want to call it a statement game because the last time I talked about the Falcons having a statement game. They got blown out uh 30 to nothing by the Carolina Panthers. So I’ll use a different word and hopefully you know the mojo is a little bit better uh for that one. But it’s more of a declarative game. a declaration that, you know, this team is more than just a mediocre team. Uh, and whether or not they can go toe-to-toe with who is going to be more than likely, again, barring something crazy. You know, maybe maybe the Colts continue to to win games, but, you know, the Buffalo Bills will probably be by year’s end the best team that the Falcons have faced this entire season. And, you know, we have seen this regime. We talked about it quite a bit last year that this team struggled against playoff teams uh and and outside of their division last year. Uh and so we’ll see how they fare this year in terms of you know who it does look like Tampa Bay uh is going to make the playoffs as we sit here today. We’ll see where Minnesota and Washington uh fall uh in that hierarchy as well. But uh Buffalo does seem very likely also to make the playoffs. So, we’ll see how the Falcons sort of perform and and you know, goes back to something I said during the summer, respect is earned. It’s not given. Uh, and so this is one of those prove it games where we’ll see if the Falcons can earn some respect by not only being competitive in this game against the Bills, but potentially winning it. We’ve seen them, as I said, perform really well uh in prime time. They’re 4-2 under Raheem Morris. And so hopefully when the lights are brightest come Monday night, we will see this team play up uh to that potential. And I think that’s definitely a possibility. But, you know, it does feel like it’s going to be a little harder given that the Bills are coming off a sloppy performance because going into next Monday night, you kind of were hoping that the Bills would have a sloppy performance. Um and that would contribute to the Falcons chances of winning. uh you know, maybe the Bills get a little too complacent, you know, going into that game five-0 at that point in time. Uh and unfortunately, the Bills kind of already had that sloppy performance. And does that negate the possibility of them having another one? And so we’ll get more into that uh as part of my sort of chief takeaways watching uh Sunday night’s Patriots Bills game as we continue today’s locked on Falcons. Today’s episode is brought to you by Price Pix. the daily fantasy app where making the right call can actually pay off. And prize picks, you know, is making it simple and easy for you to win money for those gut reactions, those gut feelings when it comes to football. All you got to do is pick more or less on two to six player stat projections and you can turn your takes into real prizes in less than 60 seconds. Uh, you know, and the beauty of prize picks is just you versus the stats, not you versus any player. So, you know, if everybody listening to this podcast is feeling great about Bjan Robinson’s ability to attack that vulnerable Bills run defense and wants to go more on his 78.5 rushing yard projection, you can do so and we can all uh help win money. Just put in one other successful projection uh more or less and and you’re going to win money. So, if you want to take advantage of that opportunity, make sure you download the prize pick app today. Use code locked on NFL and you’ll get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That’s code locked on NFL for $50 in lineups after your first $5 play prize picks. It’s good to be right. So, uh, you know, to get ready for today’s episode, listen to Locked on Bills’s reaction to the loss. Wanted to hear what Joe Marino had to say about it. Also did kind of skim through the all 22. Watch the game live, you know, off and on, you know, where, you know, like a lot of people, I’m checking my phone, doing other stuff while the game is on, but uh, you know, not always locked in. So, you wanted to go back and and rewatch the all 22. obviously didn’t go through with a fine two comb, but just kind of picking the highlights uh of the game and and sort of two things kind of stood out to me watching this Patriots Bills game from Sunday Night Football. Um the first one was the Bills were sloppy. The second one is I thought Drake May did a good job hitting some plays outside the pocket right now. Going to the Bills being sloppy. They had three turnovers. They had 11 penalties for 90 yards in this game. Um, and going back to what I said earlier, the hope was, I think if you’re a Falcon fan, that, you know, the Bills would have you would get YOLO Josh Allen coming into Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday Night Football and we saw the last time the Falcons played the Bills back in 2021, uh, we kind of saw yolo Josh Allen because he threw like, I believe, three picks in that game. Uh, and you know, yolo meaning you only live once. uh for for those of you that are old and washed. Um you know, and you know, Yolo Josh is is the type of guy that’s known to push the ball down the field. And you kind of got a glimpse of Yolo Josh last night against uh New England because his one interception was kind of him forcing a throw late over the middle and Marcus Jones undercut it and picked it off. And so we need more of those types of plays if the Falcons want to have their best opportunity uh to win this upcoming Monday night football game. And the question of course is like are you likely to get two of those games in a row? Now earlier in Josh Allen’s career, the answer was yeah, it’s pretty plausible that you could get that version of Josh Allen twice in a row. as Josh has seemingly matured, you know, settled down, uh, all that stuff, you’re not getting that version of Josh Allen as consistently. And so, we’ll have to sort of see. And, and that’s kind of the issue where it’s just like you don’t really control what version of Josh Allen is going to show up. Now, later in the episode, we’ll talk about sort of what control, what little control the Falcons have and trying to, you know, keep Josh Allen contained and whatnot, uh, in that regard. But, you know, that’s you don’t want to be in a position where it’s like, well, we just are betting on the other teams sucking, you know, like that’s kind of the situation where you you really needed that for the Falcons and, you know, you kind of got that on Sunday night against the Patriots from the Bills and so it feels less likely and again going back to those stats where, you know, usually the Bills will bounce back. Uh, so we’ll see if they do on Monday night. Now, the second thing that stood out to me watching the game was Drake May outside the pocket. Now, looking it up on PFF and True Media, uh, he had a league high and, you know, we’ll see what the Monday Night Football game with the Chiefs and whatnot, uh, has to show for, you know, Patrick Mahomes could could do some things, but, you know, so far through the week five slate, uh, Drake May had a league high 18 drop backs where he was able to get outside the pocket, right? and he went seven for 12 for 87 yards on those 18 drop backs. He had four sacks and obviously uh you know had a number of scrambles on that um in a game, but he was able to hit a couple of of big time throws uh including one to Stefon Diggs that helped set up a go-ahead touchdown. I believe was it the second or third quarter? I can’t remember. I think it was the third quarter. Um that set up that go-ahead score. Uh and then you saw him kind of late in the game uh able to get outside the pocket and make a a crazy throw uh to Stefon Digs that helped uh you know the Patriots get into field goal position hit the game winner and whatnot. And so, you know, will we see something similar from Penn? Uh, will he be able to make some of those off structure plays that Drake May was able to do and those and the reason why that matters is just because the off structure stuff is hard to defend for a defense where it’s just like, oh, well, you know, you you call up the defensive play, you cover your guys, everybody’s in position for the first, you know, threeish seconds of the play. Like, it’s drawn up and then the quarterback breaks outside the pocket and buys his receivers another three seconds to get open. And it’s really hard for guys in the secondary um to, you know, cover for that long. And if you can’t get that quarterback down on the ground, like, you know, the Bills were able to do four times, uh, you know, those other times, it opens up a possibility for him to hit, you know, some big plays down the field. Right now, how that applies to the Falcons, we haven’t really seen Michael Pennock shine in terms of getting outside the pocket. Now, one of the things we pointed out last week coming off the Washington game was that was arguably his best game of his career where he was able to show that where he he was able to get outside the pocket, extend plays, and hit a couple of throws down the field against Washington. Uh, you know, that was, you know, quote unquote uncharacteristic of what we had seen from Michael Penn in his six previous starts. Uh, so the question of course is, okay, will we see more of that? Uh now again, we’re only talking about I want to say like four or five plays in that Washington game as opposed to 18 uh that we’re talking about in this Patriots Bills game. So I don’t think we’re going to get to that number. Uh but if we are at four or five or you know seven or eight of these plays, are are we going to be able to get that type of performance for Michael Penn if you know those opportunities are expanded, right? Will he continue to do that or will we look back at that Washington game and, you know, a couple of weeks from now and be like, “Yeah, that was more of a one-off.” Like Pennix was really good outside the pocket in that game, but just kind of hoham, you know, elsewhere, which is he’s mostly been ho uh outside of that. So, that’s going to be an open question at this point in time. But, you know, I do think Pennix doesn’t necessarily have to get outside the pocket in order to win. It’s just to me it’s notable because again going back to something we talked about on yesterday’s episode, I think the Bills defense is good and I think they’re a disciplined defense and so having that little thing in your back pocket of being able to extend plays and buy more time to give your receivers opportunities to make plays down the field and get open obviously I think is a bonus. I don’t think it’s necessarily something that is necessary. Like we saw this against the Ravens. Like you would assume and I went back and watched all the explosive plays that the Ravens had in that game. Just thinking like, oh, of course, you know, because the Ravens had a bunch of explosive plays in that game. Um, and like thinking like, oh, of course it was Lamar Jackson extending plays. And it really wasn’t Lamar Jackson extending plays. Um, and so you can win from the pocket against this Bills defense. Uh, you just got to play like Lamar Jackson. is basically, you know, you got to play like an MVP caliber level. And that’s been the consistent trend over the last couple of years with the Bills where like they they only lose to either teams that have MVP quarterbacks, so basically the Ravens or the Chiefs, or they lose to teams like the Lions last year that have uh elite play calling from Ben Johnson or the Rams last year with Shawn McVey and whatnot. And it’s like, you either need to have that elite play caller or an elite quarterback and you can beat the Bills. That has been the general trend over the last couple of years. And you know, I don’t want to put that sort of expectation of Michael Pinnick. You know, we like the pump here. I don’t know if we’re at a point where we’re going to start pushing, you know, MVP talk here on the podcast quite yet. Uh but, you know, we might get there after after Monday night if certain things happen. Um, you know, and then of course the question is like, do you have that type of play caller, which anybody who’s a regular listener of this podcast knows that where we stand on that one. And the answer is no. don’t have a Shawn McVey or Ben Johnson level play caller uh when it comes to Zack Robinson, but we we’ll see if Zack Robinson can go out there and do the thing that we want to see him do. So, um you know, I think Pennix doesn’t necessarily have to win outside the pocket. He can win from within the pocket. I do feel like the Falcons playmakers are better than the Patriots overall playmakers. Um, you know, Digs is had a hell of a game. Um, you know, but I think London and, you know, a healthy Mooney and Kyle Pittz and, um, all those guys, uh, also have, you know, Hunter Henry had a big game, too. And so, I’m hoping we’ll see a similar big game from Kyle Pittz. You know, we’ve talked about this before on the podcast, but in the past when we talk about, oh, this this should be a good week for Kyle Pittz. You know, last year it never turned out to be a good week for Kyle Pitts outside of maybe that Thursday night game against the Bucks. Um, and then this year it’s been like, oh, Kyle Pittz has been delivering on that. So, hopefully we’ll see that that trend continue. But I I do feel like the Falcons um have the opportunity with their playmakers that if we can get these guys featured similar to what we saw against Washington where Bejan had a big day and Drake had a big day and Kyle Pittz had a big day and you throw Mooney into the mix, I think that’s going to be the formula for success. So, it’s not necessarily, oh, we need Michael Pennix to get outside the pocket a bunch of times and make plays. You know, if those guys can win consistently, then Michael Penn should be fine winning from the pocket, similar to what we saw from Lamar Jackson. Uh, you know, often getting the ball into the hands of what Zay Flowers in that week one matchup, but we shall see if the Falcons can live up to that potential. Uh, again, this is a big Zack Robinson prove it week. uh when it comes to his play calling and maybe we maybe we’re underestimating Zack. You know, I I don’t again I don’t think he’s leaprogging Ben Johnson or Shawn McVeyy’s reputation based off of what’s going to happen Monday night, but hey, you know, it’s possible he could uh absolutely close the gap. So, uh we will leave that aside and talk more about what the Falcons defense is going to do going up against this Bills team uh and all the man coverage we expect to see. And you know, the Falcons are going to need uh AJ Terrell, their cornerback, to return. And hopefully we’ll get, you know, a positive update on his status come Wednesday uh before we do the crossover Thursday. Uh but his presence is going to be instrumental to the Falcons ability to play man coverage. And we’ll break that down as we wrap up today’s lock on Falcons. Today’s episode is brought to you by Mazda, who craft cars for those who do more than simply move. From footwork to breath work, we know that athletes sweat all the details. And Mazda brings the same intention to how we craft every model. You can feel the Japanese craftsmanship in every detail. From the metallic accents to the available Napa leather upholstery, you can make everything everyday drives feel like anything but. From smooth handling to intuitive controls, with all-wheel drive standard in every crossover SUV, you can drive with confidence through almost any season. Like our players, we sweat every detail because when you make every move count, impossible becomes irrelevant. Mazda, move and be moved. So, the Falcons getting AJ Terrell back uh from his hamstring injury that he suffered midway through that week two game against the Vikings. Um you know, getting him back healthy coming off of the buy. He’s now had what, you know, three whole weeks to rest that hamstring. And so, hope hopefully he’ll be healthy. uh because if he uh is that means the Falcons can deploy the man coverage that they’re very likely to play against the Bills because most NFL teams play man coverage against the Bills because you know this has been a trend for many many years in in in the last several years where when you look up you know who’s seeing the most man coverage among starting quarterbacks in the NFL Josh Allen is almost always seemingly all the years I’ve looked up in like the top three four five right and that has also continued into 2025 based off of the research I’ve done, right? Uh and you’re you’re probably some of you may be a little baffled by that because given Josh Allen’s mobility, uh you know, the usual uh trend in the NFL is when you face mobile quarterbacks is that you want to play zone because you want to have all 11 defenders have their eye on the quarterback just in case he breaks out to run. But that is not the case with Josh Allen, which is a contributing factor to why he’s so good. Um, and we’ll get more into those numbers. But the reason why you play man coverage is because of how good a passer Josh Allen. You’re much more worried about Josh Allen the passer than Josh Allen the scrambler is kind of what we’re getting at. And you want to play man coverage because essentially what man coverage is going to do is it’s going to shrink the windows for Josh Allen to throw into. That’s the benefit of man coverage versus playing zone coverage, right? uh and zone coverage. Typically a high level quarterback like Josh Allen is going to carve that up. It’s going to be, you know, just easy. And you can think back if you’re a Falcon fan to the several times you would see Tom Brady when he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers going up against those Dean Peas defenses where they would play a lot of zone and Tom Brady would just pick them apart, right? Um, and so, you know, if you’re going to play zone against Buffalo, you really need to rely on getting reliable pressure with your front four guys. Uh, and that’s a challenge against Buffalo’s offensive line because they are one of the better offensive lines in football. And Josh Allen currently is fifth, I believe, in according to PFF in terms of facing the least amount of pressure um this season. Uh now he faced a little bit more pressure against the Patriots on Sunday Night Football than he had in the first month of the season. Um and some of that is owed to their right tackle Spencer Brown who normally is one of the better right tackles in the league. Uh coming back from an injury where he missed the week four game against the Saints. uh and he had a kind of a rough go coming back and he hasn’t necessarily been his usual stalwart self uh so far the season even before those that injury that caused him to miss that Saints game. Uh and so we’ll see if the Falcons can kind of exploit that. This is kind of a big pro it game for this Falcons pass rush. As we have discussed before on the podcast, you know, this pass rush hasn’t really shown up against teams so far through four games. uh you know they really kicked butt in the first two games and the coincidence that I don’t think was a coincidence is that Tampa Bay and Minnesota were down arguably the best offensive tackle at left tackle and then the last two weeks against Washington in Carolina you did not have injuries at the tackle and the Falcons the pass rush fell off and it’s basically me arguing based off of the four game sample we’ve seen so far that this successful pass rush is driven by their edge rush room um and when you’re facing so far when they’re facing good tackles, they have been far less effective and so their pass rush overall has been far less effective. And Deion Dawkins is one of the best left tackles in football. And Spencer Brown normally is one of the better right tackles uh in football. And so we’ll see uh if the Falcons pass rush can take advantage of that. Again, so far the answer when they’ve faced a offensive line like Buffalo is that they haven’t been able to really reliably and consistently pressure the quarterback to the level that we would like to see. Uh but we’ll sort of see how that plays out on Monday Night Football. Now, going back to the notion of playing man coverage, right? And one of the things that playing man coverage has done is that’s going to allow Jeff Ober to bring some pressure. But, you know, the expectation I have is Jeff Oberg is going to wanted to play man coverage because at least based off of, you know, my charting of the Jets defense last year in the one game I charted in week six against the Bills, that was Jeff Ober’s first game as the interim head coach. Uh so it’s very likely that his natural proclivities as a defensive play caller were most apparent in that game as opposed to the previous five games when Robert Salah was the head coach and Jeff Olrich was marching to the beat that you know of Robert Salah in those games. And in that week six game against Buffalo my charting uh show that the uh the Jets played 53% man coverage on Josh Allen dropbacks. Uh, and I compare that to the four other games that I charted last year from the Jets defense. Uh, some of those being games where Salah was the head coach and some of those being games where was the interim head coach, but the Jets man coverage rate across those other four games was only 31%. That’s still a relatively high man coverage rate for by NFL standards, but not nearly as high as 53. 53% is, you know, by NFL standards is obscenely high, right? Typically in the NFL, you’re going to see most teams in the NFL somewhere ranging somewhere between, you know, 17 and like 30% uh man coverage. Uh in the NFL, that number used to be higher, but you know, in the last couple years, teams have gone much more towards veered more towards zone as a way to try to limit explosive plays. But um so to me, like I would I would be surprised if Jeff Olrich wants to play zone coverage in this game. Um, but I think a big part of that will be heavily dependent on AJ Terrell’s healthy return because I just don’t know if this secondary can be trusted to play, you know, whatever level of man coverage, 30%, 35%, 40%, 50%, 60% that Jeff wants to play, uh, without AJ Terrell in the lineup. They’re just not going to be nearly as good. Now, let’s be clear. Um, just because you play man like man coverage isn’t solving the problem, right? it it is by defensive coordinator standards the lesser of two evils is that’s basically you know again that’s a testament to Josh Allen because um even though Josh Allen has consistently seen you know more man coverage than most NFL starting quarterbacks he’s also a quarterback that performs extremely well against man coverage so it’s kind of like you’re damned if you do damned if you don’t right you play zone against him you might be better to be able to contain his scrambles but he’s just going to pick you apart throwing the football and man coverage. You open yourself up for to be gashed with some of those scrambles, but you that’s the only chance you have of really slowing down uh his arm. And I, you know, I got some of the stats for you uh looking it up over uh at PFF, you know, his 2025 stats uh of of Josh Allen, that is of passing versus man coverage or zone coverage against man. Josh Allen completes about 61% of his passes so far this year. Uh against zone it’s 76%. So that’s what we’re talking about where it’s like you he’s there no chance, you know, again, you’re letting offense complete 76% of the passes, that’s not going to be great for you. Uh the passer rating against man coverage for Josh Allen is 110. It’s 109 versus zone. So again, it’s basically his efficiency as a passer. Doesn’t matter what you throw at him, he’s going to be extremely efficient. his success rate uh against man coverage, which also includes scrambles, uh is 55% against man. It’s 54% against zone. So either way, those are extremely good success rates uh that you want. And you know, you can look at the scrambles. Against man, he’s scrambled nine times this year and averaged about 12 yards per uh rushing attempt. And against zone, he scrambled 10 times and averaged about eight yards per rushing attempt. So, it’s like, okay, like, you know, it’s playing zone means that he’ll get four less yards uh on the handful of times he he scrambles. So, you know, instead of getting 70 yards, he’ll get uh 60 yards or something like that, you know, whatever the math works out to be. So, it is one of those things where it’s like there is no magic formula. You just got to, you know, you got to play, you got to go out there and execute. You got to have guys going out there breaking up passes. Hopefully, you know, you get Josh forcing a throw into a tight window and then, you know, Billy Bowman or AJ Terrell or Jesse Bates or somebody comes away with that football to create a turnover. And of course, the Falcons offense with their run game as well as their passing game. Hopefully, that will all be firing on all cylinders, but you’re going to need a complete team performance from the Falcons on Monday night if you’re expecting to beat this Bills team. And we’ll sort of have to see if the Falcons can deliver on that. Uh, so we will get more into this Bills matchup later this week on a crossover Thursday with Joe Marino, the locked on Bills host. But tomorrow on the episode, we should be joined by Alan Sturk, uh, who covers the Atlanta Falcons for the Falcoholic, the SP Nation website for the Atlanta Falcons, and he also happens to be the former co-host of this illustrious podcast way back in the day in 2016. And he’s been a frequent guest in recent years. Uh, and we’ll, you know, pick Allen’s brain on what he thinks the current state of this team is, you know, coming out of their by-week and, you know, looking ahead to this Bills game. So, that is all in store for you tomorrow on Locked on Falcons. Continue to make us your first listen. Check us out on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcast in order to do so. It really wasn't shocking. NE always plays Buffalo tough. Clickbait headline.

Rise up 🏹2-2
Bills run defense is bad bijan and Algere will eat
Bro you are completely wrong about Brady vs Dean Peas defenses. Especially in Baltimore. Held him to his 2nd lowest completion percentage while there. Only against the Jets was it worse.
