And one thing that Jaylen Wells talked about when we talked to him at training camp was he talked about the increased amount of work he put into his ball handling. And he guards Kate Cunningham on the other end who pulls up and hits the mid-range jumper. Cunningham a career-high 26 points per game last year with nine assists a game at 31 double doubles and earning his first All-Star birth. And also his health was a big reason why Detroit was able to turn their season around from 14 wins to 44 wins last season. Aldama tried to go off glass and the rebound to Tobias Harris. This Pistons team was one of the least injured teams in the NBA. They only lost about 120 games to injury and 52 of those were Jaden Ivy with the broken leg. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies, their injury numbers significantly higher. Pistons had the second fewest. Grizzlies were better than they were a couple of years ago, but still a high number of injuries for the Grizzlies a year ago. They were seven. They lost almost 340 games. He’s also a good three-point shooter for their team, which is not a a prolific three-point shooting team. He’s one of the guys that they’ll turn to. Ty Jerome with a floater. Get used to that. Well, the thing with the Grizzly speed, what you expect to see this year is a lot of the ball getting moved from side to side. That will hopefully get defenders out of position as Harris gets that runner, gets defenders out of position. And so, you should see a lot of drives from the weak side from this Grizzlies team. Well, they’re they’re there to replace another Michigan guy and Tim Hardway Jr. who moved on from this basketball team, but they’re trying to replace some of the three-point shooting that lo that they lost when he left the team. You see Ivy there on the bench. Nice to see him back from the leg injury. Sasser really good defender as well and converts to make it a 10-point game 20- 10. The big talk with this year, you know, about speed. A lot of these teams want to play faster, but we talk about is also the defensive side and both of these teams will get up defensively to pick you up full court while pushing it the other way. That’s what’s going to happen. That’s what the Grizzlies were great at last season. I know the Grizz have been great at for the last couple. Pippen converts. And you know, you can talk about speed in terms of the number of possessions, but it also is the speed or the quickness with which you get into your shots. You’re not just pounding the dribble waiting for somebody to move. Well, and even when you get into it, you said, how well do you move the ball? How quickly does the ball move side to side? Because the other thing with the speed, you don’t want the ball to stick. Everyone can be moving, but if the ball is not moving, then it is as if you are all stationary. Holland turns it over on the travel. Pistons already five turnovers. And I think one of the things that will be intriguing to watch as the Grizzlies play this fast, can they keep the turnovers down? Because last year’s turnovers were a lot higher than they wanted them to be, which didn’t allow the possessions to be in their favor as much as they would like for it to be. And uh I was talking with some of the coaches and they said you would not believe how impressive he was in training camp and Vince Williams Jr. This is a big year for him as well. The wing group is very very crowded and it’s going to be a big time fight for playing time. Fights tough for playing time but it also is a cushion for injuries that are a major part of basketball. The foul call early on that back door will vert. And so for the Grizzlies, yes, they have a plethora of guys at the position for this Grizzly team. Last season, his own injury slowed him down. So nice to see him back on the court healthy. Vince able to play just 27 games a year ago. Sasser shot clock wind lining down. Down to three. Holland offers up a three and finds the bottom. Holland averaged six and a half points per game for the Pistons in the regular season. Pistons eliminated in six against the Knicks. And Pippen drains the three. His play here during the preseason will be something that for a lot of us is we’ll say, well, what should it be? Is Kate Cunningham knocks down a three. The one thing that you can say is in talking to him, the mindset is right there. Now it’s just a matter of seeing what it looks like on the NBA floor. Cunningham back on the floor drains a three. If you go back and look at all eight, the there the first three made by Wells was the most contested three that they’ve had of the eight. Ivy drives, sprays it out. The miss by Chaz Laneir distance is that when you have multiple ball handling partner then you can have enough drives that lead to good looks from the three-point line and that was something that this team had been lacking in the past. And Jerome, you talk about ball handling. Here’s a guy at 65 who can handle well handle and create his own shot. Course he started the point as the point guard in this basketball game here tonight. on the floor for the Grizz and it’s a role that he was accustomed to playing when he was in Cleveland. Also, whether you want to say he was a point guard, he was a lot of the times a major ball handler as Cunningham was able to go end to end to get that layup. Cuttingham with seven for the game 3521. And I talked to a number of players on media day and they all felt that GI Jackson this would be a breakout year for him. last year really derailed by injury and struggling to find his way and find his role but fully healthy coming into camp. I think he’s in the right head space to be able to to go out and and really create some havoc for this Grizzly team. Ivy trying to go downhill. Offensive foul and there’s the rookie Cedric Howard taking the charge. You talk about the measurables like Kawhi Leonard, the wingspan is enormous himself up to be able to take that charge. At camp in Nashville, he improved every single practice. The coaches, they were expecting a lot from him and at least in camp, he certainly delivered. Jerome with a hesitation move. Landale, another three. Down the well it goes for Jack Landale. He just needed a change of scenery, partner. He’s really a three-point shooter. Also, he’s also a new father. Grizzlies 14 points off of Piston turnovers and had given up just two. In contrast, Grizzlies a 20point lead. Look underneath and the foul drawn. Tobias Harris will go to the free throw line. Coward was asked at training camp. He said, “So, uh, how do you, you know, I have confidence? They picked me for a reason.” Here was a guy who had an opportunity to go to Duke, had a good NIL deal on the table and he said, “You know what? It’s he told me it’s not about the money. I want to be great at the next level and the opportunity is going to be presented to him here this year in Memphis.” Well, the other thing was that when they started to talk to him, they they said that his draft prospect has started to move up. They thought once that changed, then now this was his always his goal. It was his dream. And if that could be attained, then he would go out to attain it. And so the Grizzlies the beneficiary of the draft position. And hopefully for him and for this team, it works out the way that we all wanted to. Jerome off the bounce. If the Grizzlies have to start to the year without Jiren, without Zack Ed, without Brandon Clarkson, some of these guys that are bigger wing players may be asked to play in that power forward position. Luckily, they have size guys to be able to do it. Tip by Laneir was missed, but a loose ball foul. Ty Jerome gets called for that last foul. is one of the things that Tomas Isilos said in training camp. He said, “We’re going to be down bigs. Three of our primary bigs, at least at the start, so other guys are going to have to step up.” And he did identify Cedric Coward as a guy may need to be a rebounder because he is physical. He’s got the long arms. Well, him Gi Jackson, another guy you looking at, we’ve seen Vince Williams Jr. playing that role last season with all the injury that the Grizzlies sustained. So there will be a number of guys who will be asked to play a role that is more of a step up because of the early season injuries for the Grizzlies.
