The Pelicans have the STEAL of the Draft…
The Pelicans made the steel of the draft. While everybody’s been focused on Jeremiah Fierce and Derek Queen and their development, another player that the Pels drafted is getting a lot of ra reviews in training camp. We’re going to talk about that player inside this edition of Pelicans Digest. What’s good with it y’all? It’s your people Mel of the MIC back in full effect once again inside Pelicans Digest. You know what it is. It’s Mel talking about them bells and this is where you get the best analysis and more about the New Orleans Pelicans. So, make sure you hit that subscribe button, like the channel. You know, we be on point over here giving you the best info, details, and more about what’s going on with the Bells. And we’re just a few days away from the return of Bell’s basketball. Everybody’s excited. The kids excited. Everybody’s excited. That’s why you need to like and subscribe to this channel so you can get the latest information on what’s going on with the Bellicans. And of course, the Bellicans are on their way. Well, they not even on their way. they have landed in Australia uh for their NBA weekend of series and games uh that are going to be playing out there as the NBA and the NBL continue their partnership and uh uh coming off of training camp uh a lot of tour days and a lot of talk in training camp about the new look of the Pelicans and how they’re going to work together and Jordan Pool and we’re going to get our first actual look at these guys this weekend actually the First game is Friday, October 3rd. Uh, just in case. 4:30 a.m. Get up early. Get ready for it. Get ready for it. Uh, but in this episode, I wanted to talk about a player that has been sort of flying under the radar from this past season’s draft because, of course, the big talk has been about Jeremiah, the 18-year-old, the explosive playmaker, the uh uh the upside and the huge potential. Everybody’s aware of that. Then there’s the Derek Queen situation. Of course, he’s injured, but Bellus gave up the draft pick. We all know the story about it. But a player that has been flying under the radar and has been receiving some rave reviews at training camp this year is Micah Peavey, the second round pick from Georgetown. Uh Peavey has been uh getting rave reviews in camp according to coach Willie Green. And uh and I think this is a player that I have been big on. I I say this before when he got drafted. I I’ve been very big on this player. I’ve been very uh uh uh complimentary and also very positive about what I’ve seen from Michael Bey, especially during summer league. I saw how he has a lot of defensive presence. Uh and also he still has enough offensive prowess to at least get you some points every night. I al I also said that he’s like Herb Jones, just a little has a little bit more offensive game than Herb. And a lot of people seem to agree with me. It’s something I’m just saying. Coach Willie Green has been ranting and raving about it about about him in uh training camp. He says that he may be flying under the radar in terms of media and fan interest, but not in practices. Green said he’s standing out big time. He’s one of our guys who is doing really well. And again, I’ve been been big on BB from the jump because again, he has a like I said, when you watch him in summer league, if you saw how he stayed in front of guys the entire time they were on the floor, everybody, he is going to shut down whoever you been in front of him. And you got to admire that about the kid. And of course, he fits into the scheme of what Willie Green wants as well. Willie went on to say that he fits sort of our core characteristics of how we want to play. Number one, he’s a high character young man. He’s on the floor. Uh it starts with him being competitive. He brings toughness. He’s a a good defender. He’s smart. He makes the right plays offensively. Doesn’t hurt you at all. And that’s what’s needed on this Bellicus team, especially in that second unit. Uh that’s coming up real soon. And it’s also like something I say before. I think I said this in a previous video that that that heave could be putting uh Jose Alvarado on notice. Uh but I also like a situation and I would like to see a rotation hopefully during this weekend and in the Australia games uh where Pave and Alvarado on the floor together and I would like to see how that works together. I would like to see how the two of them works together with maybe uh Jose at the point and B at the shooting guard. I think that would make an interesting combination. But BV is also pretty big. He’s like 67. So, you know, even running the wing at some point at some times could could be beneficial for the Pelicans with BV in that position. And speaking of wings and speaking of centers and wings, I ain’t talking about Buffalo Wild Wings either. I’m talking about Derek Queen. And Derek Queen of course uh has been participating in some drills in camp according to uh Willie Green as they also are now in Australia getting ready for the series, but he won’t be participating in any of the games. But he has been participating in drills due to his left in uh wrist injury according to Willie Green. He says he’s stepping into some of our drills and he could do some of that, but we won’t rush him. When he’s ready, we’ll get the heads up and he’ll be able to step in and have more contact. And here’s my concern now that I really have about Derek Queen right now. Here’s my concern and which is why I also am glad that the Pelicans aren’t rushing this or trying to push this kid because I think that pressure of being the guy that that you gave up a first round pick for could affect this kid mentally. I think that could affect this kid mentally in this rookie season. It’s going to be tough with this kid, especially uh if he’s coming back from injury and he’s struggling. I think the Pelicans are doing the right thing by not rushing his kid to come back or or or even pushing this kid to even, you know, get back on the floor right away. Just take your time and get your conditioning up because again, I think that pressure, that noise that you keep hearing, you know, they can say what they want about, oh, it’s just outside noise. We don’t hear none of that. They hear it, man. This is the social media age and all of these kids are in the All these guys are in the range and their kids that are still in the range of being obsessed and being on the social media thing. Go look at Jeremiah fears. They they love the social media thing. So the noise they see it and they hear it. So I’m hoping that none of that starts affecting this kid in any way, shape, or form. Um, but something another report that came out a couple of days ago uh lends credence to something I said about Derek Queen uh playing a five position. There’s a lot of y’all and a lot of NBA am uh another a lot of NBA analyst who has said that Derek Queen is going to be playing sort of a backup center position or going to be playing a five position. And I’ve been screaming no that shouldn’t happen. Derek Queen is not ready to play a five. And according to this report from NBA.com, it seems like I was right because according to the Pelicans, they don’t have any plans to play to play queen at the five. According to Jim Oenheimer where he says Missy uh he talks about how Missy is coming off earning a spot on the NBA’s all rookies uh team. While Carl Makavic averaged 22 minutes after the All-Star break, putting up 10 points and five rebounds in a backup role. Added up and fifthear head coach Willie Green appears to have more viable options in the paint than a year ago. And what does he mean by that? Well, he means that Kevon Looney was the signing that we’ve been talking about that the Bellicus needed. And the reason why he points to that signing in this article as well and also points to the rotation of centers being Looney, Missy, and Makavic is again due to something that I’ve been talking about that the Pelicans have been lacking for years and that’s rebounding. This is confirming everything that I said in previous videos on this show. New Orleans fell all the way to number 26 in rebounding percentage of 24 and 25 after finishing in the top 10 in every previous season under Green. Ranked fourth in the NBA last season in reboundings uh in rebounds 36 minutes and uh looney. This is who we’re talking about. Ranked fourth in the NBA. Sees the department as one of his main priorities as he debuts with the new franchise. So again, this is something I’ve been trying to preach to everybody on why they signed Kevin Looney and why also Darren Queen is not going to be playing a five this season. Derrick Queen is not ready to play the five this season. In my opinion, Looney brings you the experience. It also brings you the rebounding that this team sorely needed. Yes, they were historically a defensive a fine defensive rebounding team, but when you got shooters around you now, you got guys that can score, you have to be able to get those offensive rebounds. And Looney is great at that. He’s one of the deep premier rebounders in the game. One of the top five rebounders and offensive rebounders in the game. So that that noise that you hearing about that and about Queen playing the five, it’s not going to happen. I said this already. Queen is not really play the five. You seen him in Sun Summer summer league. He didn’t have the conditioning. His his conditioning to get up and down the floor wasn’t correct yet. Let alone talking about putting him at the five. That’s not going to work. That that that’s going to lead to more disaster. Again, you give him time to develop and then you can see you can move him at the five. But for now, he could play that four. He can play Zion’s backup role if need be. That’s where he needs to be positioning. That’s why I think they drafted him as well. So all that stuff about him playing a five is crazy. I I never understood it. Uh but we’ll see how these rotations are going to start looking this weekend when they play in Australia. And one thing I want to say about this Australia trip, man, because when I first saw it, I was kind of upset about this because when you look at I think it’s messed up at first. At first, I thought it was messed up because you got this this Pelicas team. All right. They had to start training camp a week early. They had to get in. They try to scram in as many records as they can, then fly a lose a day to go fly over there to Australia, play these games, have something to do almost every day while they out there working and all this other stuff. Then come back. Then you have to go to Birmingham for a game. You got to go do a couple of road preseason games. Then you start off your season in October, next month, less than a month from now, less than a few weeks from now, with seven of your first 10 games on the road. So, so this Wells team is really at a disadvantage when it comes to that. But I will say this, what I can feel positive about is that this gives this team time to develop that chemistry that they need to get together because again, this is a newly reconstructed roster. And you already have pieces in there that have already played together, but also you integrated some new experienced pieces as well that are still in the same age range as these guys. So, I think that gives these guys times to get together and bond and also uh sort of get to know each other and develop a better chemistry, especially if they going to be out here on these road trips together all this time, especially to start this season before anybody gets home like really talking about. So, you know, while everybody else is starting their everything this week, the uh the media days and training camps and all that other stuff, the Bellicans at least got a week early jump on everybody and a week and more time in advance to start putting this thing together and making sure that this is going to be what they needed to be this season. Like I said, I keep thinking we can we can make the playoffs. What do you think? What are your thoughts? I might have to come out with some bold predictions in a couple of days. I’m just saying. What are your thoughts, though? How do you feel about Michael Peavey? Do you think he could be the steel of the draft? I really do think you’re going to be a big fan of Michael Peavey before the season is over. Just telling you if you’re a Bellicus fan, I think you’re going to like this guy. What are your thoughts on Michael Peavey? Is he the steel of the draft or did we get it right with Houston and Queen and we cool with that? What are your thoughts on that? The trip, the Australia trip. We’ll break that down in another video real soon. But share your thoughts with me right here in the comments. I have a whole lot of hope for this season, and I've been saying that every season for the last 5 years but this year it feels like something's different.
Only 224 days away from the NBA draft lottery. So excited as a Pelicans fan.
Yes I agree Melz we may need to move on from one of the guards (point guard) to get possibly that first rounder back. January could see a team needing a point guard.
It’s great to have someone who knows basketball like you do give us an analysis of the team.
Look at Peavy’s college career – he improved every year. It doesn’t surprise me that he is playing well.
If saddiq bey doesn’t work out as the back 3 springer or peavy skill set could be used there
I like the Pels draft class and I feel that Peavy could be a steal and an important piece to that revamped Second Line. Queen is definitely backing up Zion and Bey. I think the team has what it takes to make the playoffs and make some noise.
I think that the early start helps us get to it faster and first. Plus, it prepares us for that NBA traveling grind…
If Queen would have stayed in school one more year. I'm pretty sure he'd have been drafted in the top 10, so giving up that top 10 pick really doesn't make a difference
Anyone know if it will be televised and if so what channel
We’ve drafted well overall since being oin Nola
Why can’t a big man be showing promise?
Jose can get us a second round pick and be a good contributor on a contender
Let Queen take his time… no rush
Zion to the 3. Queen 4.
We good at the 5
Liked and subbed. Thanks for the great analysis. I watched the Pels game in Australia on Friday, and have loved the New Orleans basketball since Baron Davis days. I love finding these Pels channels that cover it properly. Cheers from Aus!
just want to say Trey Murphy.. man oh man what a pleasure to see him hoop. Him and Zion were just dominating that first half
