Celtics reveal COMPLETELY NEW play style | Garden Report Practice Update
Hard hat’s all about showing up to play hard, doing what it takes to win. If you want to cement legacy, win another. He’s your third center. You don’t want to pump him up too much, but it’s hard not to. This is maybe the most I’ve ever agreed with you. What’s up everyone? This is Noah Dalzelle and I’m here with Bobby Manning at the Hourback Center after the Celtics fourth day of training camp. Uh we got I think we got one more day before preseason action officially begins. Um, and there was a big theme today and that’s that the Celtics play style is going to dramatically change on the defensive end, it sounds like. Um, and they’re going to be a much more physical team that is more okay with racking up fouls rather than the team that we’ve come to know over the last few years. And that’s one that really tries to defend without fouling. And here’s what P and Pritchard had to say about that at practice today. That was yesterday. But, uh, it’s been very physical. So, it’s definitely been a war out there. I am tired, but it’s good to push the body. to these uh limits to get ready for the season. So definitely pushing ourselves physical what’s that like like what what’s it like being physical? No, I mean like just what level is it going on? Uh it’s just you know just I mean you see like okay seeing them who won the the championship like they get away with a lot of like hands, fouls, physicality, stuff like that. So like the NBA I feel like in the playoffs is like you know allowing a lot more physicality to happen but you got to learn how to play through it and be more physical. So we’re emphasizing it and um yeah it’s been good. So the good visual the bleeding the blood coming down the neck. It really hammered home the physicality they’re going to be playing with this year. But do you buy it? I I don’t know if I totally buy it yet that this is overhaul is going to happen on that end. I think I do because the defending without fouling thing makes sense from an analytic standpoint because you look at the numbers and if you can avoid getting in foul trouble, you can avoid getting the other team on the line and you can just, you know, concede some open shots but not too many, like you can be a top ranked defense, which is what they’ve been in recent years. Um, but Pritchard said something really interesting and that’s in the playoffs you can get away with that contact. So, it’s almost like why build your game plan to win regular season games when in the playoffs that level of physicality is heightened and now you have Oklahoma City really fouling a lot and route to a championship. And so, I do think it’s a mix of things. It’s one just seeing what worked in the NBA last season, seeing how the league is being officiated, which I think is increasingly more physical. Um, but it’s also like they’re going to have to find ways to do things differently than in previous years because they don’t have the talent. And so I guess looking at the roster, like do you think they have the right roster for that kind of play style? Because you look at Oklahoma City, like they have Lou Dort, they have guys that are kind of this is their MMO, right? They’re not they’re not going to be switching as much this year. They’re going to be playing more straight up defensively. So they do have to change their identity to some degree because they’ve had that switch everything al guarding point guards thing going since like the EA year. And that’s when you looked at this defense and said, “This is a forceful group. These guys are playing physical. These guys are playing tenacious. Last couple years, we’ve looked at it and we’ve almost complained at times. They’re playing back. They’re playing the percentages. They’re letting guys shoot. There’s not a real in-your-face nature to this defense. And it worked. Like they were still top two, three, four on that end defensively just by being smart. They’re going to have to do this in a smart way if they do do like knocking people around and following. I don’t think that’s going to intimidate anyone or be effective, frankly, if that’s the route they go. So, I’m almost surprised to hear Joe embrace that cuz I think one of the things he’s felt strongest about through his NBA tenure so far is don’t foul. Don’t give them those points at the line. Maybe they feel like they can get away with certain things now, but when you look at how Orlando played them, and I think that’s where a lot of this inspiration came from and revelation, you know, Brad talked about it after they lost to the Knicks, the what the Magic did to them and the personnel the Magic have, they don’t have necessarily, unless you disagree with me, I don’t I don’t see that on their side. They don’t have like the Orlando Magic personnel. Um, but they might have to find some bodies on the roster that are willing to embrace that. Like you look at a Josh Minot, you look at a Jordan Walsh. Like like do you start one of those guys to instill some defensive identity? I think that’s a question maybe. Or maybe it’s saying, you know, that’s not Sam Hower’s game necessarily, but that’s the way you’re going to have to play this year if you want to be on the floor. And so is it the perfect roster for like this more physical foul foul heavy play style? Probably not. But is it is that a better approach for them than the alternative which is doing what they did last year but with less talented defenders? you know, like that’s I think that’s really Yeah, they can’t play the way they did last year. They don’t have a rim protector necessarily. They don’t have big guards who can defend every position like Drew Holiday. So, something’s going to have to change here. I just don’t think it should be fouling more. I I don’t I don’t think that’s smart. I don’t think that’s going to be effective. What I would do a little more of, and we’ve talked about it as well, is try to force turnovers. And if some fouling comes with that, maybe that’s where the extra fouling happens. Um, but that’s something they’ve really struggled and they’ve talked about doing through a handful of years here. So, that’s another area where, you know, they can say it right now, but I need to actually see it and I need to see how it looks. Um, cuz, you know, I know in Joe’s heart of hearts, he is play discipline, don’t make mistakes, don’t take risks. And, you know, my favorite line of training camp so far has been calculated risk. Josh Min said that. How does that actually look? Are they jumping in passing lanes? Are they swiping at the ball? Are they playing up? Richard talked today as well about I usually play that style and now I can play a little bit more and everybody’s going to be doing it now. So fullcourt press, I like that. Jumping in some passing lanes, I like that. Fouling and trying to be tough. Not that that’s necessarily what they’re saying. That’s not who they are. So I think that it might have to become who they are because who they are as a team anchored around Jason Tatum with Al Horford and L Cornet coming off the bench or sense you know at the center position with Drew Holiday on the floor like they aren’t they’re not that team anymore. So I think we don’t really know what their identity is on the defensive end in particular because the personnel is completely different and so I know there’s been some you know controversy around whether they’re actually going to do this hockey sub like five in five out. Jordan Walsh mentioned in media day, Joe Mazoula kind of said that that was maybe a miscommunication or he was joking with us. So I think the reality is though is that you are probably going to see a much deeper rotation than we’ve seen in years past. And so if you’re going to get in foul trouble, like you may as well have 10 or 11 guys. That’s a fair point. They can afford some foul trouble in ways they didn’t in the past. If Jordan comes in and creates havoc and then also picks up four fouls in the game, that’s totally fine. Like that’s not a problem versus you want Jason Tatum getting in foul trouble. Do you want Derek, you know, Drew Holiday? It it was just different. So there is a case that they didn’t foul enough in past seasons because guys were never in foul trouble. Tatum would have one at the end of the game. Jaylen would have two. So you’re not even utilizing them necessarily. And there’s, you know, as Joe would say, the situations bonus, you don’t want to foul early in the quarter. You can. They even intentionally fouled Mitchell Robinson, which is something that they didn’t do prior to that point in those playoffs. And we had a debate about whether that was worthwhile, but it did change the dynamic of the series a little bit. Uh, so there’s different times for different things. They’re going to need to get to a lot of different stuff this year though and certainly they can’t play the way defensively that they did in the past. Uh so I’m super curious to see what it’s going to look like. Are they going to be a good defense this year though? That’s I mean that’s what we’ll see. And obviously that’s what the coaching staff is working toward, right? When implementing something a little bit different. I think the one other thing that I would add is the goal is never to foul a lot, right? The goal is to not get called for those fouls and maybe get away with a little Well, that’s a skill, too. Are they used to doing that? You know, one of the challenges is that we’re, you know, we’re talking about it like they’re all going to be getting in foul trouble. Ideally, they don’t get called for more fouls, but they’re just more physical. And it all comes down to how the league is officiated and how, you know, what they can get away with. I mean, I think the reality of the playoffs is teams get away with fouling. Everybody knows it. The Orlando Magic were fouling the Celtics. And at a certain point, they don’t call it, right? The Oklahoma City Thunder fouled their way to the championship. That’s okay, John. Crazy. And it’s okay though if you’re going to if you’re going to if you’re going to play that way and the league is going to say that’s the way we officiate then you can’t say oh we defend without fouling when everybody else is getting away with more contact. So some of it is not like I don’t think you’re going to necessarily see them foul a whole lot more. It’s more just acknowledging that you can get away with more contact than what they’ve been getting away with. I’ll say this, I’m glad that they’re thinking about this. I’m glad they’re prioritizing it. I’m glad Jaylen has taken the approach of I’m trying to figure out how to be a number one on defense rather than offense cuz that’s the end we’re talking about offense and pace and losing points per game. Tatum being out, but it’s really the defensive end where they’ve lost the most when you think of Holiday and Porzingis and Cornett and Horford. They just lost so they probably lost more defensively than they did offensively. So rebuilding that end, trying to get back into the top 10 on that end is probably going to decide whether they’re good or not this year. Yeah, that’s the biggest question mark for me. I think you’re going to see that they have bucket getters and they’re going to find ways to get get on the scoreboard that way. So, it was interesting. This is the most most insight I think we’ve gotten into game planning from the Celtics this training camp so far. Um, and that it always helps in Peyton Pritchard talks because I think he can he dives into the basketball stuff a little bit more than most of the players. But certainly insightful. You can catch the entire Peyton Pritchard press conference on our YouTube channel on CLNS Media as well as Joe Misula who weighed in on that as well and Ugo Gonzalez who talked a little bit about his acclamation. um to the Celtics to training camp. He’s now been in Boston for the last few months in summer league. So, a little bit from everybody today. Celtics are off tomorrow. They’ll be back on Monday for the final day of training camp and then they hit the road for Memphis and Toronto where preseason action begins. Any last thoughts from from practice today? Tatum’s still out there. He is. And in crazy enough, he was at practice yesterday. He was a Duke last night and then he was back at practice today. So, every time I think an NBA player is somewhere based on Twitter, they they move around so fast you can’t keep track. So, that’s it for us today. We’ll be back with more coverage on Monday. No one’s sneaking a vegan brownie by me. I’ll tell you that. Okay. You know what, John? We’re going to do it. You have to feel that way too, Bobby. I have to feel that way. A slide out over and and make Luke your first center. Bobby, we gave you Luke hour earlier. We are not going to end this on a damn conversation about Luke. Heat. Heat. [Music]

There we go. OKC, Knicks, etc. just foul non-stop. Let’s give them a taste of their own medicine.
I agree with her. Even if it doesn't get us to the playoffs this year, it needs to be the mindset and calling card of this team. I would love to see these current guys gel and become the future of a young athletic team. Built from the ground floor.
Excellent analysis.
Extended/deeper rotation, more pressure, more fouls.
The Orlando series was a HUGE wakeup call.
The C's got their butts kicked…remember KP with the bloody head.
Orlando's physicality was possibly a contributing factor to both JB and JT's injuries.
Orlando is most likely the team to beat this year in the East.
Good to see that the C's are preparing for that possible matchup.
Thanks for the continuing coverage.
This will be an exciting year!
The physical defense has definitely gone down since Marcus Smart left. I hope the Celtics do play more physically but not foul too many times unless the other team are bad free throw shooters. 😉
Nice "Crown Her" shirt, Noa! That beard is coming along nicely, Bobby!
Bobby cracks me up lol, who said thy were gonna foul more or trying to foul more? Spoken like a true non athlete/ competitor. Fouls are apart of the gme and so is physicality, they’re playing with more physicality this yr Bobby lol u wild man.
Noa!! You do a great job with your analysis’n
💚☘☘☘
Maybe Im making this up but didn’t one of the guys say something abt knowing when to foul??
I think it was Jordan or mayb Josh maybe anfernee can’t remember. I believe in good fouls personally.
Also yall know how it is in a competitive run…it’s weak asl n ruins the game flow if you’re calling fouls were guys are still sliding with you but maybe have a forearm on your hip without extending the arm, and they’re kinda using their legs to to push you off your spot w that forearm. That’s not even a foul to me and if the league is shifting to that energy guys gotta get good at it.
All that to say I buy it for sure. That’s joes energy anyway as a little guy. P Jb Hugo Josh Chris Neemi I think are naturally inclined to play that way. The other guys will have to adjust some
It funny this how they going to play now that the soft Lightskined dude won’t be playing…
The Celtics are FINALLY TOUGHER, with Tatum out of the picture, no more playing soft chucking up 3s , defense an paint penetration is what this teams TRUE identity is , it's how this team went to the finals in the first place , it's how they won .
Cs have the right roster for 35 wins maybe …i hope we get a lottery pick
Is this Bill Simmons doughter?
Boston Celtics DARK HORSE in the EAST next season 🤔🧐🤨
Defense isn't the main problem. Shooting too many 3s in the playoffs is the problem. It gets tougher and tougher to hit baskets the deeper you get into the playoffs as the pace slows and the physicality picks up. Hoopers know this. That's why a 3 is a bail out shot for the other team! They're tired too.. so When you take 2pt shots, they have to guard that shot every time. You drag their conditioning into the fight. Teams will lackadaisically gamble and let you shoot 3s.. why? Because that's not a shot everyone can make. That's why only handful of players were designated to take those shots back in the day. Now the more players on the roster shooting them, the better? It hurts the game overall. It's the sole reason it seems "the world is catching up" to USA hoops. We started playing the way they always have and call it progress. Two point precision is KING STILL! That's how SGA won with the thunder this year. That's why Jordan is the GOAT still. You couldn't stop him from getting to 2pt spots where in his mind, he was guaranteed to knock the shot down. He drew doubles and killed the defense by swinging it to teammates. That's how you manipulate the game. Not by shooting more threes… If Jaylen has a good 2pt year feasting in the lane, we will win more. If Joe's style plays out, we lose more. Tatum, if you're listening, you have some of the best post moves in the league and you are currently the best American born player, GET BACK TO YOUR BAG INSIDE THE LANE BRO. Post up, slash and shoot that beautiful two pointer you have around the box mayne. WE.WILL.WIN.ANOTHER.CHAMPIONSHIP.
Where is the dress code? Where is the professionalism? You guys look like? You just rolled out of bed from your mom’s basement by the way, all of this qUETTA talk about who’s gonna get the center minutes the rookie from Kentucky is on his way to be in some type of version of Bam adebeyo Go ahead feel free to steal my material and take my advice.
I don’t know if I agree with my man at all. I don’t think defense that’s ok with more fouls means a defense ok with more mistakes it means more physical. OKC is just really handsy with their on ball defense and that means more fouls but also more anxious ball carriers and that’s what I would assume they are talking about. I agree with noa, pressure the ball as much as possible and play physical, if they let you do it in the post season play that way all year so u get good as a team playing that style.
Joe had Neme on the bench all year and then while he lost to the Knicks bc of refusal to rebound. Meanwhile he developed and played Kornet on expiring contract who has 0 chance of contributing in NBA Finals due to lack of athleticism. Now to make up for his bruised ego, Joe is playing tough guy in camp which is great until someone get hurt. How many NBA title winners had both a coach and GM that never played in the league?
I agree with Noa. I'm glad we're talking about a new defensive identity. Our defensive style was too passive during the playoffs
