Veteran defenseman Alex Pietrangelo has been shut down for the season.

The Vegas Golden Knights announced Pietrangelo will not play in 2025-26 when they submitted their opening-night roster, a decision that was approved by Pietrangelo, the league and the NHLPA.

The Golden Knights will be eligible for full relief on his $8.8 million cap hit.

The 35-year-old announced he was taking a step back from hockey in the off-season to focus on his health as he deals with a long-term hip injury. But he then told Vegas media in September that he was responding well to rehab and was not closing the door on playing again this season.

“Nothing’s really concrete," Pietrangelo said at the time. "I’m going to take it day by day and go through my process and see where it goes.”

Drafted fourth overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2018, the King City, Ont., native has 148 goals and 637 points in 1,087 career games between the Blues and Golden Knights.

He won the Stanley Cup twice, in 2019 and 2023, and also claimed a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

  1. Forever my Captain and a class act. I hope he can make it back to end on his own terms or do whatever he sees fit to. Thanks for the memories Alex!

  2. This sucks if this is how petro’s career ends. I hope he can get back to being a healthy dad and husband first, hopefully this season allows him to do that.

Also would have loved to see him get a chance on the Canadian Olympic roster.

I know people are salty with how his career here ended, but he will also be the captain of the 2019 cup 🙂

  3. Forever the first Blue to lift the cup. A legend. I wish him nothing but the best.

At the time, I thought letting him walk was the biggest mistake of Armstrong’s career.

Hindsight is 20/20 now with the injury, but still, what a legend.

  4. He’s back in STL – may or may not know someone who’s doing some work in/on his house right now.

  5. I wish him well.

Will this be a problem for the Knights? Just glad we aren’t in the Western division. I thought they’d easily beat Dallas last year, which is my bet for the next to fall from elite status.
