“Super Excited To Come To Buffalo” | Colten Ellis After Being Claimed Off Waivers | Buffalo Sabres

Was it unexpected what happened uh when you got claimed from St. Louis? Yeah, I uh you know it was my first time going on waiver, so I didn’t really know what the process was like, but um you know when I got the call yesterday, I was super excited for um the opportunity here and coming to Buffalo and you know um learn as much as I can and um just take it day by day. Seems like your career has been a process. You had three years in the East Coast League, now two years in the American Hockey League. Seems like you’ve taken each step now. you looked like, at least from the numbers, you had a really good year last year in the AHL, did you? Yeah, I mean um it was good. I think that’s all you look for every year is uh just to improve on the things that you work on all summer and throughout the year. So, I thought uh you know, everybody that helped me out last year, the goalie coach um in the summer, Scotty Gthro, and then Dan Stewart yesterday or in Springfield, um you know, we work closely together kind of fine-tuning details and it’s been a process and um you know, I’m happy where my game’s at right now. Where are you mentally right now? Obviously, you were expecting to go back to Springfield and all of a sudden you’re here in an NHL room with guys you don’t know what where where has the mental shock value been the last day or so? Yeah, it’s definitely a whirlwind. Um, you know, but at the same time, just trying to live in the moment. Uh, it’s my first time kind of experiencing all this, so just trying to soak it all in, take it day by day, and learn as much as I can. How did you find out you were heading to Buffalo? I got a call around 2 pm yesterday just uh whenever the waiver wire was was done or whatever it is and then um just found out yesterday. And what was the day like after 2:00? Did you get on a plane? Did you drive here? Were there any delays? Um yeah, I just kind of got got everything organized in Springfield and then um just drove here. It was only ended up only being 5 and 1/2 hours. So was able to get in here last night around 11:30, 11:00. So it was uh it was pretty smooth transition. Did you talk yesterday to Army at all? Yeah, he uh he was the one who called me um when when I found out. So um he was great. He’s been he’s been uh a good communicator for me um throughout my time with the Blues and um you know, I was I very appreciative of uh what he’s done for me and um yeah, I just had a couple words with him yesterday, so it was great. What was the gist of his message? Uh he he just wanted to wish me the best of luck. Um you know, I’ve been in the Blues organization for four or five years now. So, um, and just kind of said thanks for your hard work and I wish you the best of luck. You’re 25 now. With the process that you’ve gone through professionally, do you feel yourself that you’re now ready for this opportunity? Yeah, I believe so. I mean, um, something I work for for 25 years now, right? So, um, every day just just grinding to get better and and working on what I can control and, um, you know, working with the people that I mentioned earlier. Um, so I mean just putting it all together and now having the opportunity to be in an NHL dress room is awesome and I’m super excited about it. Are there any guys who you have played before? Yeah, I played with um Bone Barum and Krebs um a few probably like six or seven years ago at the World Championship. So knew them a little bit and just knowing guys through mutual friends or whatever. So um so yeah, I’m excited to get to meet everybody and uh get settled in.
