Reacting To Grizzlies-Pistons Preseason Opener | Chris Vernon Show

The Grizzlies fell last night 128 112 to the Detroit Pistons. It doesn’t really matter win or lose. It’s the It’s you know it’s preseason. Um but it’s good to be back in the building. Good to see everybody. It’s good to see all the ushers, everything like that. Security, all that. It’s good to see everybody. Great feeling. Devin Walker, you were in there. I was there. Your thoughts? Uh I want to know what Devin Walker thinks. So I will say this, bro. I’ll say the the the three guys that we want to be projected starters. Not not even the projected stars, the new guys. KCP looked good. Vet uh scored off the bounds, hit hit threes, what we expect him to do. Ty Jerome looked like Ty Jerome. He scored the ball. He look he did the things we What was he in the box for today? Solid. He was uh Ty Jerome, man. He had uh 16 points, uh four rebound, three assist. So that’s I love that cuz he’s a new addition. You go you came out here and do what you did to do. And then I know you going you probably going to show on this Rosa cuz you were making fun of him before the show. I like the Jock Landelle as the hub of the offense. You’re not the See, I like that we jock. Even Benny just goes, “Damn.” I mean, we we can rebound, but like I like rebound. We cannot rebound. John Lindell is like the hub of the offense, running the high screen roll, running off ball stuff, running little DHOs, all that kind of action off of him cuz look, he looked like and he hit two or three trays. You have panic. You have panic at the disco high hopes this season. And you just said I just like what I saw last night. Being the point of the offense. No, I’m just saying I just saw what I watched last night. I want to see 12 with Jock Lindell. I want to see 12 with KCP. I want to see 12 with uh you coming off a down coming off a a drive and you kicking out to Todd Jerome or KCP like the the I’m in my mind I’m envisioning a Jaw Taj Jerome KCP Jiren either Jock or Zack E lineup. this, bro. It’s gonna be hard to stop. There were three things that mattered going into going into last night’s game. There are three things that mattered really and you hit two of the three. Ty Jerome looks great. Like he does like that dude looks it’s like okay that it doesn’t look like that was just a one year off in Cleveland like he told us on media day. He sat there with us on media day and he said I finally got a chance to play real minutes in Cleveland. That’s why I produced. It it wasn’t just given the system. It’s I was actually given the opportunity. If I’m given the minutes, I will produce. Ty Jerome showed that last night. The other one is Kenny Contavius Cwell Poke. Looked great. Those are the two you hit on though. He was scored off the bounce a little bit. Those are the two of the three that you hit. The third one, it’s going to be a work in progress because it was his first game in like 10 months. But said was was shaky. Had a really good TA. You will love one of these defensive possessions from Cedric C. He had a This is right. This is it right there. Now you go back to the beginning of this. You go back to the beginning of that. This defensive possession was great from him. And then he takes the charge right there. He was lost, bro. He He was like, that’s what I’m talking about, bro. Like he’s he’s in no man’s land right now. He’s in no man’s land right now. He’s in no man’s land right now. But he set the charge. I love it. But he set the charge. No, there’s multiple effort, though. Yeah, he’s giving Right. There’s multiple effort though. I’m not saying he’s TA on that or anything. That’s contagious. I ain’t going to lie. That’s contagious. I just I need one more guy to hit a shot. You got You got to figure You got to figure if you got somebody pushing that motor like that on the defensive end, it’s only right the next man see that and say, “Hold on, I got to fall in line.” And the next man, the next man. Well, he had a couple welcome to the NBA moments last night already. Did he? Cuz uh uh shout out said, man, cuz he was like I could tell the like the defensive stuff TA is like, “We’re going to pick up full court. We’re going to get in your shorts.” Pause. Uh my guy said I picked up four court on on Kade a couple times and uh Kane was like, “Welcome to the league, young fella. I’mma walk you down here.” Uh but look, bro, this is like he said his first game in 10 months, bro. It’s his first. You throw anybody in the in in the to do a job for the first time in on a professional stage for the first time in 10 months. They might look like that. Like he said last night, bro, he said, “I trust my work when it comes to this shot. I was over seven. I trust my work. Say it’s going to be straight, bro. He might not be like that’s that’s what we were talking about a couple days ago. Don’t expect him to be the guy on offense off the rip. If you can be compete on defense, I’m fine, bro. You gonna play you. Coach is gonna play you. If you I need you to hit a couple shots, though. Yeah, you’re going to have to hit a couple shots. They can’t do the TA on you. You know what I’m saying? No, no, no. So, they want they definitely going to TA your ass. You go 0 for seven. Hey, you want them to ta your ass? You want to put want them to put boen on your ass? Knock down some threes. Oh, no. We’ve got our TA. It’s Omax. Omax is our TA. My guy can’t hit anything at the rim. My guy can’t hit anything at the three-point line, but he is athletic as hell and he tries to be active everywhere, but my guy cannot make a shot. Um, no, for real. But one thing, one thing about the preeason, bro, what you want to fact in, bro, you got to realize a few jitters, a few butterflies in your stomach, you know what I’m saying? First game, you know what I’m saying? you want to go out there and do so much and you don’t want you won’t you don’t want to go out there and make the coach be like what’s going on here but what he showed me was that he can play on the court just watching those clips multiple efforts fighting through screens getting with the switch those are the things that buy you time on the court so a shot I’m pretty sure he got drafted for a shot correct okay that’s going to fall yeah it’s going to fall once you get your feet under you once you understand the offense on once you know what your spot said where you going to be able to receive the ball then playing with electrifying point guard like Jaw and and and allar in Jiren Jackson, they gonna get you easy shots. Allah Tony Allen a cut. You got to cut to the basket, get the dunker spot if you ask a flare screen split like it looked like he’s going to fit that role right there and I think he’s going to do it well. You talk about Kctavius Kyell Pope, he did exactly looking at the statue, he looked he did exactly what we expect on both on both ends. On both ends and and that’s what you expect from him. We ain’t looking for him to come in and be no 25 30 point score. You ain’t Desmond Bang, but what you are, you are a great defender. You knock down uh key shots throughout the games and you a veteran, bro. So, that’s what we expect. And far as Ty Jerome, man, I’m I’m I’m still learning about this kid. I can’t look one of those dudes like I understand what I’m supposed to do on the basketball court. I’m still learning. I ain’t trying to do too much, bro. I ain’t trying to like He understands what he is on the basketball court. He seemed like a like a game manager. Um like very steady like one of those I don’t know if y’all y’all remember Eric Mayor. Yes back in the day. VCU legend remember Eric Mayor legendary. Hey look Eric Mayor used to be man he come in the game man you we think we got the game on on lock cuz Westbrook out bro he come in silly too dude he and he tried to tell us he doesn’t do any of that stuff and now we’ve caught him multiple times on video doing this doing this. Look at this all like sound stuff here. Look one more pass to KCP. Extra pass. You know what I’m saying? He turned down a good shot for a great shot. And you could tell KCP and him have played a lot of NBA men. Like not a lot of NBA men, but like good NBA minutes. Yeah. No, you can tell how they how the flow of the game go when they out there. You’re right. They play a great good NBA cuz they they did their job. Uh cuz it’s it’s like, yo, your point guards are not out there. Just figure it out. I will say too in some situations we talked we had this conversation TA about a secondary ball handler. We’re going to need I watching last night. I was like, “Bro, I know 12 going to be out here soon. Jiren’s going to be out here soon, too, but Jiren’s not really a playmaker. Who’s going to be the other person to make plays off the bounce? KCP did a little bit off the bounce yesterday doing a little, but like who’s going to be the other person? He got to the mid-range a little bit Casey. He did. It was like 2013 cuz we kind of talk like 3 and D with him, but no, he got to the mid-range honestly. Like, bro, we got six players that we know for sure. No, bro. We got six that we do this on the first after the first game. No, no, I’m saying what I’m saying. That’s Well, yeah. J, Jiren, Edy, Ty, Contavius, Codwell, Pope, and Santi. We know what we are there. We know what that six is. I’m mad y’all. I’m not saying nothing about GZ. What do you want to say? Uh, I need throw Jaylen in there. Jaylen, you want to throw Jay? You can throw Jaylen. I know y’all like to downplay how good Jaylen is, bro. But that dude also competes his ass off. He does. Like, if y’all give if y’all can give Sid credit for competing his ass off, you got to get Jaylen credit. That’s fair. That’s fair. I But I did not put said in this six. I did not put him in here. Uh but I’m saying I know what those six are. The rest of it is I think he’s still so it look like you could tell he’s still so raw, bro. Like he does stuff that you be like, “Oh, okay. I see it.” But then he does something like, “Okay, oh, okay. His ass going to sit back down. What you be thinking? I already know.” But in reality though, it’s I want to be good so bad, bro. Man, I ain’t going to lie. You give me two weeks with GG, man. Cuz you can see he has like be a whole different animal. He looks like a just two weeks. All I need is two. Man, I think the hard This is I think the hardest part with GG is GG has never been a role player his entire life. He has always been the best role player in the world besides me. Only. What’s wrong with you, bro? What’s wrong with you, bro? He just say he’s the best role player ever. You got No. Who is the best role player ever? Dennis Rodman. No, I’m just saying when you when you and what I’m saying and I I’m not trying to take the crown, but what I’m saying, you need somebody who could talk you into be have talk you into having that mindset to be a role play. Yeah. You get what I’m saying? You can’t just all right, I’m I’m getting 18 19 shots a game and then all right, now I got to I got to fix my face and and accept this four, five shots. If I get that, you know what that take? Mental toughness. It take a guy to to to that been through it, that done it, that been done the same way they doing you for championship teams though. So this is, you know what I mean? Well, the thing about GG, it’s like, so it is like you’ve been a star player. They always talked about GG is how young he is. He’s still like the youngest player on the team, but it’s like, yeah, this guy was a star for like 18 years of his basketball life, and now you want him to do something completely different. It’s going to take longer than two years. It’s going to take longer than three years. This is something that may take if you want him to be a role player in the league. Like he’s got to buy into it and it may take him like six years before he ever hits that point. Man, listen. And and in the meantime between that, what would you do? What is the number one thing you would do with G? Give me top three things if you get to work with GG. If I’m GG, I’m holding my hat on the I’m I’m I’m watching all the defensive clips I can of Tony Allen. I don’t mean to plug myself again, but this the third time. He’s watching your highlights with you on Fridays. Every Friday. Every Friday watching highlights. He might get misguided watching them on Friday. They don’t win. All hard Wednesdays. All hard Wednesday. You got to watch the all hard Wednesday defensive clips, man. Cuz if you just hold your hat on that, man, be a three and D gap. Just focus on that. Them the minutes I’mma aim for. You know what I’m saying? and all of look, let’s get in transition. Get our transition buckers because you athletic as hell. You can get up the court faster than anybody. Let’s let’s let’s crash that glass and let’s shoot shots when they five 4321 shots. He hit one in 53 2 step back. I was like, that’s and the shots and them shots is going to gain him. It was like a pop step back. I was like, okay, I got this in I got this in a time where I can do that. But I think it’ be a lot of times where, you know, um, he’ll catch it in transition and jack that. You know what I’m saying? He, you know, it just, it’ll just be plays that’s just kind of like ill advised. But if he structure himself on, man, I’m I’mma go get my points. See, and that’s my hat on the defensive end. And that’s something like and that’s something too like if that’s something that he noticed cuz one thing we going the the Grizz are going to struggle with that we noticed last night, bro. Them back boys going to get a little spooky. The back boys gonna get a little spooky. When that ball come off that rim, that’s where you miss Ed. You going to miss the big dog cuz I think I think too you going to have the guards going to have to be better rebounds. He you was one of the best at Oh man. You going to need Jaylen sticking his nose in there. You need KCP sticking his nose in there. Jard the guards have to rebound. Everybody’s going to have to re That is something you kind of miss with Dez cuz Dez could rebound too from that two guard spot. And that’s that’s right. And that’s and I’m pretty sure that’s something getting preached in the locker room cuz you got to figure, you know, uh that as scrappy as they play, you know, um when J’s not out, you know, you got to hold your hat on some type of identity. You know what I’m saying? All five collectively rebound. We going to hold our hats on the defensive end and we going to pressure the what he say he stuck them 94 feet, bro. 94, bro. T they was look soon as the timeout they falling to the That’s what I say. I think we there. I think that was that was something noted in the lock. It’s like we we we right here. That’s what we going to do all year long. picking no fool. Jaylen picking no fool. Yeah, they plan on doing that all year long. struggled in some times. I think I think offensively on but I think it was a part of the lineup he was out there with. I was like it didn’t I mean when they had him out there in the second quarter with him, Jaylen, PJ Hall and Santi, I’m like dude, if your front line is going to be PJ Hall and Santi like I mean that’s just like you know you’re not sur like you’re you’re not surviving that. Like any teams they’re just going to go they’re going to go right to the rim on you. I thought since we are just giving it’s just based off one game I told you the six that I think for sure you’re going to be able to count on and then the rest of it’s unknown. That is why I say dude Kchar is probably going to end up in the lineup playing sometimes like he’s going to end up in that’s why he came in so early is because of the reb I mean Tomas get some extra possessions he knows where he’s supposed to be and there are so many guys here you could see out there like whether it’s Vince whether it’s said whether it’s they just like PJ Hall like these they don’t know where they’re really supposed to be or what they’re all supposed to be doing right now and it’s like dude Contour is a guy who’s been here forever and he just knows knows what he’s supposed to do.
