Sabres Waive Georgiev, PTO Success for Erne, Gregor, Rooney, Ovie a Top Seller Again

Welcome back. All right, news of the day video for all you fine people on the internet for your Tuesday. It is October the 7th. Uh it is of course opening night in the National Hockey League. Now, uh starting at the upper left hand side of the board, that is normally how these things work. Uh Milan Luchich is going to get a contract it sounds like from St. Louis, but not yet. Uh until he’s 100% healthy. Uh they’re going to keep extending his try out by 10 days. So just 10 days at a time. And then once he’s 100% or at least close to uh he probably gets a contract from them at that point. So Luchi it looks like has earned himself a contract soon just not not quite yet. Uh Sunquist uh dealing with a lower body injury. He’s viewed as weak to week and of course my rule is minimum of two weeks when they’re weak to uh so Sunquist is going to be out for a while for the St. Louis Blues but it’s a team that has some depth. So the reason for the Vegas jersey, Vegas has declared that Petrangelo will not play this season. Now this was agreed upon by the team and the player. So uh Petrangelo had to agree to this. So he will not play this season which includes playoffs, meaning they get the entire cap hit to go on LTI. I have already seen posts on the internet saying that this is Vegas cheating the system. The system was changed. There is there is now a playoff salary cap. What this means is Petrangelo will not play this season and cannot play this season. So the system has been changed. This is what everybody wanted. So uh yeah, Vegas puts Petrangelo on LT. He will not play this year as was stated this summer. I had no reason to think anybody was kidding or lying about it. So here we are. Um, Jeremy Davies waved by Vegas as we continue to see moves being made around the NHL. Um, bad news for Vegas fans. Not only have I picked them as the Stanley Cup champion for 2026, so is the EA Sports NHL 26 game. Uh, the SIM has Vegas winning over the New York Rangers in the final. So, sorry Ranger fans. It means you’re not going to the final either. I of course kid. Um, Sims are fine and everything, but in in the end it comes down to the players. And yeah, we’ll see if Vegas does win a Stanley Cup. But there are a lot of people taking Vegas to win the cup this year. We’ll see what ends up happening. Uh, Florida has signed Noah Gregor. He signs a one-year two-way contract. 775,000 at the NHL level, 450,000 at the AHL level. Uh, Gregor is a a decent depth option. Can pass for waiverss when need be. So, he’s not on waiverss today, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on waivers soon. Uh, Utah signed Rooney to a one-year two-way contract. 775,000 at the NHL level, 325,000 at the AHL level, and Kevin Rooney is on waiverss today. Um, at their practice today, Liam O’Brien, Liam O’Brien and Barrett Hayden, uh, both at practice in non-cont jerseys. So, unlikely to play in that first game for Utah, but crazier things have happened. We shall see how that all turns out. Uh Dallas Stars news. Jamie Ben has been placed on LTIR. Not really a surprise there. This allows them to recall Bishell. So this is where teams are, you know, playing around with the cap and trying to make sure they got room for everything. Uh so Ben being on LTI doesn’t 100% alleviate the cap problems in Dallas. Um something I talked about all summer and we’re still here. Dallas with some some some cap issues. They’re right up against it. Uh they also the Dallas Stars do they enter the season number one on the power rankings for Sportsnet which as I mentioned in a video yesterday I didn’t do the power rankings before the season this year. Um I did do that in previous years. I opted not to do that this year. So the first power rankings will be this Saturday which we’ll post Sunday morning on the channel but I do them Saturday night. Uh Adam Ernie has signed a one-year two-way contract with the Dallas Stars. We saw this coming. Uh Ernie played well in the one Dallas game that I saw. I thought well enough that yeah, you give him a two-way deal. Maybe you send him down to the Texas Stars and he gets a call up. Uh maybe he plays for a while while there’s injuries, that kind of thing. But Ernie has turned his PTO into a contract. So that’s pretty good success rate for PTO’s this year to be honest. Um you know, three of them today, Ernie, Rooney, Greger, and Luchi is going to get a contract as well. So eventually in all likelihood. Um, so yeah, uh, it is nice to see these guys who who go to work, uh, and and put in the work, uh, get those contracts. Uh, Brad Tree Living, the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, uh, when talked to about Eastn Cowan and the fact that Easton Cowan, it appears, will start the season in the AHL, um, saying that he wants Cowan to play more. He wants Cowan to get a chance to play as many minutes as he can. This is also the reasoning behind bringing in Kaden Primo in that he wants Hildabby to get a lot of starts and have a lot of ice time and a chance to further his development. So the addition of Primo meant to keep Hill to be with the Marlies and yeah, we’ll see how things go once Wool is back. But in terms of when Wool is coming back, we don’t know as of yet. uh Tree Living saying that he’s trending in the right direction and things look good for for Wool, but no word yet on when he’s going to return. Uh for the Toronto Maple Leafs, he is starting uh his brand new contract this year is Wool. So, uh the earlier he’s back, the better for Toronto, I would think. Although, Primo should be okay uh for for a short period of time, I would think, as the backup. It just means Stallars is probably going to play a ton. Um, so Kent Hughes, general manager of the Montreal Canadian, says the goal this year is another playoff appearance. Uh, he also talked to uh about Lane Hudson and the lack of an extension at this point. Says he’s not stressed about it. Brings up how many years of control they still have when it comes to Hudson. And he’s not wrong. Uh, but I do think that Hudson’s asking price will go up as the season goes along because Lane Hudson looked pretty good in preseason from what I saw of him in the preseason as well. So, I don’t think his asking price is going to drop once we get into the games that matter. I think Hudson’s the real deal. Uh, the Vancouver Conucks are set to call up Mancini. They may very well have called him up by the time this video goes live. Uh, because uh, Pio Joseph, who they picked up in the offseason, is going to be placed on injured reserve and Mancini will be called up to take his place. So, it’s just one of those player going on IR. Another play player being brought up. Uh if you’ve wondered whose jersey was the best selling in the National Hockey League this past season, it would be none none other than the gold champion, Alex Ovuchetkin. Uh he leads the way as the number one bestselling jersey of last season. Bard number two, Matthews number three, McDavid number four, Crosby number five, McKinnon number six, Jack Hughes number seven, Marshon number eight, Posternok number nine, and Macar number 10. How many of these do I have? I have an Ovetkin. I have a Matthews. I have a couple of McDavids. I know I have a couple of Crosby’s at least. I have a McKinnon. Don’t have a Hughes. I have two Marons. I have Do I have two? I have one Posternok. I do not have a Macar. So, I have some of them. All right. Um, moving on to the second column of news today is it is it is early in the season, so probably going to see a lot of boards like this early on. Uh, Zack Heyman has been placed on LTI by by the Oilers. That was expected and allows them to call Tomasak back up. So Tomasak, who we expected to be on the roster to start the season, that will in fact be the case. Uh, the Winnipeg Jets hopeful that Jonathan Taves will be good to go for the season opener. Uh, he is still listed as dayto-day. So the plan is Taves comes in and plays in that season opener. Uh, we’ll see how all that goes, but Taves was brought into Winnipeg. There’s a lot of hope there. And obviously with Lowry out to start the season, too. This is where Winnipeg could have some struggles to start the season. We’ll find out soon enough. Uh some waiver wire news as well from other teams today. Uh so waved by the Ducks, so they will not be carrying three goalenders. Uh Gorgv waved by Buffalo. Maybe they realized they have way too many goalenders. I just picture it like they had a practice and they go, “Wait, one, two, three, four, five. Do we have eight goalenders?” Somebody get Kevin Adams on the phone. I think we have eight goalenders. But anyways, uh yeah, Gorgv waved. So, I don’t think he’s going to get claimed. I don’t think so gets claimed either. So, both of them will very likely end up with the AHL affiliate tomorrow. Uh Yasa has been waved by Carolina. And keep in mind that when players get sent down to the miners this year, they have to actually report to the AHL franchise. You can’t just do it on paper and then keep the player with your team and then recall them a couple of days later. So, um I think up until oc October 15th, I think that changes to being the rule up until October 15th. I think they can still do the paper transactions, but it’s going to get interesting when it comes to players being sent down for some organizations whose AHL affiliate is nowhere near uh the parent club. Uh that’s going to make things a little more difficult, a little bit stickier. though. Uh we’ll see how much uh how often waiver wire stuff is taking place and how often players are being sent down uh when that rule does change. Uh Pittsburgh. So news for tonight. Uh Sheilobs gets the start for the opening night. So to me that says she loves is seen as potentially being the starter. Um maybe Dan Muse deciding that she loves gets his start and the next one would go to Jury. But I think it’s a a pretty big statement for She loves to get the start for that opening night tonight at Madison Square Garden. So I do wish she loves all the best. He did help Abbottzford win uh the Calder Cup and by help I mean put him on his back and drag him to that Calder Cup. So I wish him all the best. I do. And and if Pittsburgh ends up going 82 and 0 and Sheilovs is the goalender the whole way, I’d probably be pretty happy for Sheilovs if that was the case. I don’t think that’s going to happen, but we’ll find out. Starting tonight, as of right now, all 32 teams are undefeated. All 32 teams have not trailed for a single moment in a game. And all 32 fan bases have some level of hope. Uh some level of hope, meaning some have a lot and some have just a little bit. But that hope is there, and it’s one of the reasons that I love this time of year. So, let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. As always, hit like and subscribe in the event you may not have done so already. Thank you guys so much for all your support. It’s greatly appreciated. I will talk to you again soon.

  1. I almost feel sorry for Georgiev. He went from being the Avs primary goalie following their Stanley Cup win, and now he'd barely even an AHL level player. I'm guessing his issue is psychological; the guy's confidence is obviously shaken which I imagine isn't easy to overcome as a pro athlete.

  2. Well that didn't last long for Georgiev. I hope he gets back in a groove.
I have a MacKinnon and two Makar jerseys, but I'm an Avs fan so not much of a surprise. I am glad I was able to get an Adidas military appreciation jersey before Fanatics took over.

  3. SHANNON! How could you give VGK the kiss of death šŸ’€ with your prediction 😱 This is going to be awful from the start of the year knowing that they can’t win it all😭. I’m really hoping for ANAHEIM, LA , & VGK make the playoffs and SJ, UT, Van, & Seattle can keep on missing the playoffs. Sorry, I know you are a Canucks fan but I’m similarly your age and remember the rivalry between LA & VAN. fighting each other to see who can avoid 5th place and miss the playoffs and be fortunate enough to be 4th place and an invitation with the Oilers and their teams that are arguably the best of all time. I think I need to watch the Miracle on Manchester again to help myself get out some of the stinging from losing to McDavid three years in a row or is it 4 years now I’m still trying to forget about it 😢

  4. First, yes, closing the playoff loophole was a big improvement in the salary cap system. But, there IS one last loophole. That’s to sign a veteran player to a much longer contract than they’ll likely actually play.

As a potential example, Marchand at 37 signed a 6 year contract paying him $5.25 million with the same cap AAV. The odds that Marchand will play until he’s 43 are very slim. So, most likely he’ll be put on LTIR the last years of that deal. For mathematical simplicity let’s assume that’s the last 3 years. In this scenario Florida will have actually paid Marchand $10.5 million/yr for the 3 years that he’ll play while only $5.25 million will count against the salary cap for those years.

I think putting Pietrangelo on LTIR towards the end of his contract was always the Vegas plan, or at least was seen as highly likely. If the Vegas cap situation next year doesn’t leave room for Pietrangelo to play, he won’t, no matter how healthy he is. In that circumstance if Petro wants to keep playing Vegas and he will agree to negate the last year of his contract and he’ll sign with another team.

I expect to see several deep pocketed teams sign these sorts of established veteran deals until another adjustment is made to the cap rules to prevent it. If his team has the revenue and a willing ownership a GM would be dumb not to exploit this loophole.

  5. Bold statement by the league predicting a Vegas win… It's been 7 years we know !
And don't forget : "As life will find a way, Vegas will always find a way to cheat".

  6. I wouldnt mind if Flames made a claim for Husso. I'll take him over Cooley or Prosvetov. It's gonna be a long year with me complaining about flames not having a backup goalie

  7. While I really think the Hutson stuff is mainly media blowing it up, I hope this Hutson things doesn’t blow up. Making Hutson mad would be a massive fumble by Hughes

  8. Georgiev did not look good in preseason, struggled a lot and gave up a lot of goals in his starts. He will be a very helpful mentor to Levi. Does this mean UPL will be fine for the home opener or Ellis is the backup?

  9. The Knights weren’t a playoff Marner away from beating the Oilers this past year so they aren’t winning the cup this year especially with Pietrangelo gone . Also worth noting that the EA sim had the Sharks making the playoffs and the Leafs making it to the ECF so it’s accuracy is certainly questionable.
