The Florida Panthers’ quest to three-peat πππ
For the last two seasons, the Florida Panthers lacked any glaring weaknesses. They were clearly the NHL’s best. But even before opening night, they found out that three repeating will be a different kind of challenge. Captain Alexander Barov had surgery today after injuring his knee in practice. There was also this. You’ll get to know some of the other leaders that we have in our room. The Kansas City Chiefs have a sense of what the Panthers are up against. Back in February, they were one win away from becoming the first NFL team to three since the Lombardi era Green Bay Packers. And then this, the Eagles have beaten the Chiefs convincingly in Super Bowl 59, 40-22. In the last quarter century, no NFL, MLB, or WNBA team has won three consecutive championships. In the NBA, on the other hand, there were the Lakers of Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, but that was 23 years ago, and that’s it. The NHL is also mired in a three pete drought. It hasn’t happened since back-to- back four peaks which were fashioned by Montreal from 1976 to 1979 and then the Islanders from 1980 to 1983. Since then, six teams have won back-to- back Stanley Cups, but only one of them even advanced to the final the next season. And that team, Tampa Bay, lost to Colorado. The Lightning’s reign is backto-back champs comes to an end. Yes, the three repeat was once common place, but so much has changed with salary caps, free agency, a general fraying of the ties that bind players and teams. Still, if any single team in recent memory has been built to overcome such adversity and perhaps to defy the three repeated curse, it’s these Florida Panthers.
In the last 25 years, only one team, the Shaquille OβNeal and Kobe Bryant-led Los Angeles Lakers, pulled off winning three-straight titles. The Florida Panthers will make their push to be the first NHL team to three-peat in more than 40 years.
