OTD in 1909: Pirates defeat Tigers by a 4-1 score to win Game 1 of the World Series

  1. In front of more than 29,000 fans at Forbes Field, the Pirates were led by pitcher Babe Adams, 12-3 in the regular season, who went the distance for the postseason victory. Left fielder Fred Clarke hit a home run for the offense, after just three in the regular season.

  2. Trivia: the World Series MVP was not awarded until 1955. Babe Adams pitched three complete game victories in 1909. I can’t imagine anyone more deserving that year.
