I warned you the first preseason game would be rough. We would see turnovers. We would see fouls. We would see mistakes. We would see a a Magic team that is still rough around the edges. And it was only going to be made worse by the fact that this game, this game on Saturday in San Juan, Puerto Rico was happening very, very early in the process of the preseason of training camp. The Magic have only practiced four times. They did a shoot around Saturday morning. They canceled it, re rescheduled it, and and they still had it. This team just has not been together enough to really function on a basketball court. And so, as predicted, things are rough. Anthony Black went one for seven. The Magic as a team shot 45.9% from I believe they were at 38% um in the first half. They were only 13 of 39 from three, which is 33% which is the magic number for the Magic apparently. Um they turned the ball over 18 times. They they they fouled a ton. They had um 29 fouls in the game. They took 31 free throws. The Heat took 38. It was a preseason game. So, let’s get that all out of the way. The first part of the game was really, really messy. Guys were kind of running into each other. Shots weren’t falling. They they’re trying to get a feel for how they’re trying to function and play. And on top of that, like, yeah, they looked like a step slow and a step off. That’s fine. That’s normal. I I made this very, very clear. I’m fine with aggressive mistakes as long as you’re trying to do the right thing. Intention matters more than results right now. Let’s get the process. Let’s get let’s work through these kinks. Let’s like get the feel of what this is going to be about. What matters at this early stage is to see how everything comes together. And and as I say, every single year in the preseason, the goal is to get progressively better. We’re we’re aiming for the regular season. Like I don’t care what happens in this game. For the record, all the Magic starters finish plus one. Now Tristan Dilva’s plus 11 because he played in the second half, but we’ll get to that in a minute. The Magic starters, at least compared to the Heat starters, they won the day. They did their job. They did what they needed to do. So, let’s put the score to the side. We’ll talk about that in a little bit. What I really liked was how the second stint for the Magic in the second quarter was so much better than the first stint and that we could really begin to see the vision of what the Magic are trying to do. I really really enjoyed and the Magic didn’t have a ton of assists. Among their starters, they only had five assists. So, 21 assists total for the game. Five assists from the starters. So, there’s still work to do. I want to make this very, very clear. If the Magic had to play a game that counted tomorrow, no one in the league’s ready for that first off, but the Magic aren’t ready for it either. Um, however, there were there was a stretch, you know, they played six, seven minutes in the second quarter. There was a a two or three minute stretch where I was like, “Oh, oh, this is what we’re going for. This is the spacing that we’re going for. These are the driving lanes that Paulo Ben Carroll is going to have. This is how Desmond Bane can make such a big impact on this team and for this team. This is what the Magic are going to look like. You could see it all. You You really could. You could see it all in in plain English or or however you want to say it. You could see exactly what the Magic are going for here. And so, however you watch this game, however you digest this game, I would urge some patience. Just urge some patience. They’re going to have another week of practice before they play again on Friday. They’ll look a lot better, a lot cleaner, a lot smoother, and a lot more in rhythm against the Sixers than they did against the Heat. It’s a long six days before the Magic play again on Friday. And then they’re g then the games come fast and furious as they always do. Um, I think it’s a Sunday game against Miami at home and then and then a game against the Pelicans. I believe that’s on a Wednesday or Thursday. I don’t know. I don’t remember. I don’t have the schedule memorized quite yet. So, what was this weight that was worth it? Frankly, it was just a vibe of ball movement. It was it was the vibe of the spacing. It was Desmond Bane catching the ball, driving to the basket, drawing defenders to him and kicking out to Wendell Carter who hit a three. Kicking out to Tristan Dilva who hit a three. Kicking back out to Paulo, dumping down to Wendell to Wendell Carter in the dunker spot. The Magic used a dunker spot a lot more. It was just this kind of free flowing nature that’s going to take some time to get the timing right and understand where the player is supposed to go. second unit, especially in that first quarter, really, really, really struggled to kind of understand how they’re supposed to play off each other. Look, that bench unit in the first half especially was really, really rough. We’re going to talk a little about them here in a minute um in the second half, but they were really, really rough in the first half. They they didn’t have like a natural creator. And so, it’s just about getting these reps and getting better. And again, like the Magic played significantly better in the second quarter, I thought um the ball movement, the spacing, the understanding was a lot better and a lot more where it needs to be. Guys just looked like they were more comfortable. And so that’s that’s really what this time is about. Now, I’m eight minutes in the show and I didn’t mention probably the big news of the day. The Magic opted to sit Fran Vagner just general rest. He played a lot of minutes at Euro Basket. They’re they’re managing him a little bit like the Lakers did that with Luca Donuch. They’re giving him an extra week free from games like he’s play he’s he’s playing in practice obviously, but they’re they’re trying to manage him and and load manage him a little bit before we get into the meat of the season. Again, the goal is to be ready for the regular season. So, not the end of the world. Again, the wait will be worth it. Um, but I saw a lot of things that I’m I’m really intrigued by. Um and and and we’re gonna dive I’m going to dive more into some of these things more specifically um on our next episode on Monday. But I loved how springy window Carter looked blocking shots like just really active around the basket. Like there’s there’s definitely a little little spring to his step. A healthy summer did a lot for him. Desmond Bane shooting was Desmond Bane shooting. Um you know, we know it’s going to be there. Wasn’t necessarily there tonight, but we know it’s going to be there, especially as he gets more comfortable. He was such a more such a more active playmaker than I thought he would be. Paulo Beno is Paulo. Did Paulo things just, you know, didn’t like exert himself and insert himself into this game a ton, but defended really well. And again, like the defense was there. The Magic defended really well. Not really well, but they defended pretty well in the half court, but they weren’t fouling and they weren’t turning the ball over. They got themselves set and and the energy was there. The rotations were there. again, maybe just a half step up. I I I think they’re probably with some heavy legs thanks to camp. There there was a lot there was a lot to really like from the key Magic players that that this team is going to rely on. And it’s just about drawing it all together. It’s just about kind of getting a sense and getting comfortable with what this team is trying to do. And again, these games are meant to do that. They’ve had a week of practice. They’ve been drilling it. They’ve been trying to figure out, okay, how’s this actually going to work? They get into a game. They have to problem solve a little bit. Now they have a feel, okay, this is how it works. This is what we need to do. These are the things we’re gonna see. And that’s only going to make them better. And so this whole notion of things continually getting better, I think that Jace Richardson is just the perfect example of how everything really drew together in this game. So, I want to spend today talking about Jayce Richardson and talking about the way the rookie found his found himself and and really looked like he might be a player much sooner than we think. Let’s talk about Jayce Richardson and his third quarter when the Magic turned the game on its head. We’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment. Rookies are bad. Rookies don’t know what they’re doing. Rookies are figuring things out in real time and they have to figure things out in real time. There’s no other way for them to learn. allowing a rookie to make mistakes and and and live with those mistakes is one of the vital pieces of their development and and of them kind of finding themselves in this league. So I I I generally and genuinely expect very little from rookies. I don’t expect Jay Richardson to contribute this year. And that’s not that he’s a bad player. That’s not that I don’t think he can be a good player. It’s that whatever you get from a rookie in my opinion, especially if you’re a winning team, that is a bonus. Like Courtney Lee is one of a million that he was able to find and find a niche and carve out a role on a championship level team. It’s very, very rare. And again, his role was very limited. They didn’t ask him to do too much. They simplified everything for him. And and he’s a veteran, too. He’s a four-year player at Western Kentucky. Jace Richardson is a super talented player. And the biggest thing that he’s gonna have to figure out and and doing this in practice, doing this in these games, is figuring out how to function and operate on the court with the deficiencies that he has. He was the 25th pick for a reason. There’s a reason why, you know, a player that we believe is the super talented was available at 25. It wasn’t his age. He’s a freshman. You know, a lot of people thought he was he a lot of people thought he was not going to come out after his first year and then he was so good that he really didn’t have a choice. who’s never going to be never going to be hotter. It’s really about his height and whether Jace can create his shot and get his shot off against taller defenders at his height. And that will remain the question. Honestly, I would say in this game, it was still a huge thing of him trying to figure out, okay, this is where I can operate on the floor. This is how I can get myself going. This is the these are the things I have to do. And obviously, it is it’s still going to be a work in progress. just one game, just one preseason game. Don’t don’t freak out too much. But again, this is the theme of the episode is it takes time. Give these guys some time to learn and grow and develop. And nobody exemplified that in this game better than Jace Richards because the first half it looked like he was a deer in the headlights. It looked like he was a rookie playing on NBA floor for the first time. That yes, the Heat shipped their Heat culture floor down to Puerto Rico. Hopefully they left it there because it’s garbage. Um but but Jace Jace looked like he was playing on an NBA floor for the first time and that’s okay. Not losing sleep over that. What I did like and why I want to highlight Jay specifically is he came out in the second half. Yes, the starters were gone. Yes, it was a completely different game. He came out in the second half and changed the game. The Magic were down by double digits. Their second unit just struggled tremendously. And I do want to talk more specifically about them here in a minute. Their second unit struggled a ton. And yet they’re down like 12. They trail by as much as 15 in the first half. They’re down by I think 11 at halftime. And the Magic came back to win this game 126 to 118. They made this a one possession game. I believe the Heat led by three after third quarter. That was on a buzzer beating three to end the third quarter. The Magic came back and and and Jace Richardson was a big part of that. In the third quarter alone, he scored all 13 of his points. He ended with four rebounds, two assists, felt like he had more, did not turn the ball over, huge for a rookie, made all three of his threes, all spot up threes there in the third quarter, and ended up shooting five for 11. There are still things that I think he’ll need to clean up and improve on, but again, first game, not going to lose sleep over any of it, but the energy that he brought and the level of passing that he has on an early play in the third quarter, he made a crazy crosscourt pass to Tristan Dilva for a wideopen three. A play that a player of his size should not be able to see, let alone make. And Jace was suddenly just full of confidence, able to attack, get to the basket, make threes, make shots, push the pace. He loo he looked like a player. And again, it it context matters here. First preseason game going up against largely bench players. I mean, he’s Miami left all of their guards at home. Tyler Herro is out for a while. Terry Roier’s out right now. Drew Smith is out right now. Rookie, fellow rookie Casper Yakoson, he’s out right now. I’m I I don’t want to overstate anything. I don’t want to say like, oh, like but anoint him, put him in the rotation now. Jason’s going to get his opportunity. There’s injuries during the year. He’s going to play a little bit. And as I always say, you’re going to need everyone on your roster at some point. That’s just that’s just the reality of the league. You’re going to need everyone on your roster at some point. Jace Richardson delivered a lot. Jace Richardson gave this Magic team a lot. He gave them the energy lift they needed. And that is h, as I mentioned on our last episode, that is half the battle. That is the biggest battle he has to be. And you could feel and see his presence on the floor. So, is Jace Richardson going to be ready sooner than we thought? Is he going to be a player this season? I think he’s going to have moments where he looks really good. And I think he’s gonna have moments where he looks like a rookie. What’s going to be important is that he does what he did in this game. Those early moments, those moments of of trepidation, those moments of hesitancy, those moments where you make mistakes, you learn from them. You get better. You understand like, oh, this is what I’m seeing and this is what I have to do. And then you go out and do it. The fact that he did it, that he got better through the course of an individual game, whatever game that is, that is a sign that yes, he can be a player. He’s got the right mindset. He’s got the right the right mentality to be a player for this team. Now, there’s a long way to go before we can say, “Oh, this is a guy we need to invest in further. This is a guy that, you know, needs to play and have rotation minutes.” It’s a long way to go before that. But again, for a Magic team that is changing its offense a little bit, for a Magic team that is trying to learn something new and integrate new players, the point right now is to get better every day, to get better play by play, quarter to quarter, game to game, week to week, until we get to opening night when the thing starts to count. And Jace Richardson in this game showed us what that looks like. The Magic went from down 15 to winning by eight. 23-point turnaround. And Jace Richardson, well, did not finish the game because why would he? Um Jace Richardson was a big part of the Magic’s success this evening. Let’s talk about the rest of the team. Let’s go through the box score. We’ll highlight a few things. We’ll highlight more of them on Monday, but we’ll highlight a few things, especially from the starters, and hit some big issues. We’ll talk about that coming up here in just a moment. But first, today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to my friends over at FanDuel. As we always do, for the first time this season, let’s run through the final box scores. The Orlando Magic defeat the Miami Heat 126 to 118. We’re going to be back again on Monday. We’re going to dive a little bit deeper into some of these and and talk a little bit more about what we saw from the Magic and and what and what it means kind of bigger picture stuff, you know, especially from the start from the starters, maybe some guys a little further down the bench. Um, but let’s start here. Um the starters as a whole, every starter finished positive. Um Tus Jones, Esman, Bane, Wendo, Carter, Palan, Carol, they all played 13 minutes 26 seconds. They were plus one. So the the starters won their minutes. And if you’re going to care about anything about the score, that’s the most important thing. I’ll talk a little bit about the bench group here in a minute, but I want to get through some of the starters here. Um, Desmond Bane, nine points, three for seven shooting, one for three from three, two for two from the line, six rebounds, three assists. Definitely felt like, like I said, don’t freak out if Desmond Bane has a bad shooting game. It’s still early. Everyone’s getting their rhythm. Like legs looked a little heavy. You’re kind of figure out where you fit into the offense. Again, similarly, like Bane looked like he was kind of feeling things out and trying to figure out where he fits and what to do in that first stint. And in the second sin, I thought he had that understanding like he said, “Okay, I just need to attack. I just need to be aggressive. I just need to go and that led to more production for the Magic that led to more production for him.” Um, I I I really like what Bane did. It’s very clear he’s going to fit in really really well. I don’t think like the starters were running at full capacity or at the full thing they’re trying to do. It looked like they were just kind of trying to work through like a a shell almost or like a shell system as being like just say just do these movements, do these actions. We’re not running plays for specific people. We’re not trying to get shots for specific guys. We’re just going to kind of run run through this here a little bit. Just get a feel for where everyone’s supposed to be on the floor and just do it quickly. Just make these quick decisions. And again, I I do think there’s something in this Magic offense. like I I actually want to like um after I record this I’m actually go watch the game again and and and kind of soak in all the details. But there there is a lot I think to like here. We just got to kind of see it continue to grow and build and that’s fine at this stage. Again, we’re still two weeks away. There’s a week of practice before the next preseason game. We’ll see this team look a lot sharper I think on on Friday against Philadelphia. Palain Carro, interesting game for him. Only seven points, shot two for seven. So, those who are hoping for more efficiency, don’t lose sleep over any of it. It’s fine. He was 0 for two from three. Again, confidently shooting threes, I’m good with that. Three for three from the foul line. He got an and one off a nice spin move, so we know that’s still there. The more interesting stat is he had three blocks. Two uh one of them was a chase down block in transition. The other was a weak side block. He looked really eager to be active on defense. So, um again, I I think Paulo’s fine. I think there is a level of trust of like oh Paulo knows how to get himself ready. Um he was not out there to dominate and be an all-star like he he did not play like an all-star. Um and and like there’s he had a turnover where he got doubled in the post. That’s fine. That’s going to happen right now. Um just kind of getting a feel for where everyone’s supposed to be and what his reads are. The Magic will integrate and run more stuff for him. I didn’t think the Magic ran a lot for him. I think the Magics again just kind of ran this free flowing offense. They weren’t trying to do anything specific other than get through the motions of their offense and understand where everyone was going to be and just asking players to be aggressive when with with their reads and what they’re trying to do. Um there again there were a lot of turnovers, a lot of fouls on the defensive side. So I I think Paulo was fine. I was I was pretty happy with how he played in the end. Tus Jones at three points made made it the first three of the game for Orlando. Um I have to go back and watch a little bit more on him. I was paying more attention to other players, so I’m not going to comment too much about that. Wendo Carter, I thought looked really spry and just like bouncy. He just looked like he had a hop to a step and and really looked refreshed. 10 points, five rebounds, three offensive, two blocks, four for seven shooting, made one of his two three-pointers. So, I think a lot to like about Wendell Carter’s first effort. Again, just some of the things that we know. He’s a little bit of a poor second jumper, but second jump looked a lot better on defense this game. I thought he was again really really active and looking to be aggressive and assertive in his role as well. Tristan D Silva probably uh beyond besides Jason Richardson the star of the game 12 points five for nine shooting two for six from three efficiency may not quite be where you want it to be but not afraid to shoot not afraid to attack. Um had a nice kind of post move where he faked someone in and did a step through for a layup. Really liked what I saw from Tristan Dilva. Really liked just the general vibe that he’s giving off. Euro basket did wonders for him. really good step forward for him. Now, the bench, the bench unit for this game was Anthony Black, Jacece Richardson, Jed Howard, Goab, Jonathan Isaac. Not a lot of offense in that group. Um, Jace Richard, if you’re relying on Jace Richardson to be kind of your main attacker, probably not a good thing. And again, he stepped up in the third quarter. I want to give him that credit. But he looked like a rookie in the first half who was still kind of figuring out what do I do here? What am I doing here? And like if we’re going to get on the Anthony Black train, not a great day for Anthony Black. Five points, one for seven shooting, one for three from three, three rebounds, three assists. Did have three steals, three turnovers. So a bit of a mixed bag from Anthony Black. Think he was trying to be aggressive trying to attack, but it just it just wasn’t completely there. And so um this will be something to watch throughout the course of the preseason if he’s going to anchor some of these second units. And again, no starters in the second unit. That’s not going to happen during the regular season. I’m not losing sleep over any of it. But AB’s got to continue to step his game up and continue to to kind of take take this step and and and and grow from it. And I think that’s going to be going to be vital for him. Um I want to give a special shout out to Jet Howard. Always shows up in the preseason. 10 points, four for eight shooting, two for four from three. Um again, like there’s still things to improve with Jet, but he was playing with a ton of energy. Like he knows this is a big opportunity for him. he knows is a big moment for him. These preseason games matter to him. Um, he has to kind of continually prove himself. I thought his defense was a lot better. Uh, he was active. He’s willing to get dirty and do some dirty work, which is really, really important. He was also aggressive. Again, I think just generally in the Magic like be aggressive, look to attack, find your reads and take them. Like even if it’s not completely there, just take them. Um, you know, you want to make good reads, you want to make good decisions, but I think just generally the Magic were just trying to attack everything they could. And so Jet made some mistakes on attacks and drives, but I I don’t mind him doing a nice dunk at the end of the day, so some of it worked. Um, but I I think it was a good game for Jet Howard. I think he again, if he’s standing out for mostly positive things, that’s a good thing for him in the end. Dogatad was two for four, one for two from three, eight rebounds, six points. So good step forward for him. Did have four turnovers. We’ll we’ll look at that. Noah Penda in his debut had six points, two for five shooting, two for four, two for two from the line, went 0 for two from three, you know, still I think he’s still kind of figuring out where he is. But you can see the defensive potential. Like it was very very clear like, oh no, this guy’s going to be a player. This guy can do some things. So that’ll be interesting. Um among the E10 two-way guys, Alex Morales had a nice game, nine points, three for seven, six rebounds. Um add three assists in there as well. Reese Speakman had 10 points. uh perfect four for four had two-way player Jamal Kane had 10 points five for eight the two-way guys at E10 guys finished this game got the Magic to win always love beating the Heat we’re not going to complain about beating the heat 126 to 118 so a very very nice effort from the Orlando Magic in this one to get the win and some positive things and still a lot of things to get better and clean up just just understanding where they need to be is a good kind of dip your toe in the waters type game for the Magic and so they have a week again before they play the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday So, good place to start for the Orlando Magic. The Orladno Magic showed flashes of their potential in the preseason opener against the Miami Heat as they rallied in the second half to score the win.
The starters showed they can put the pieces together and improve as they continue to play together with Desmond Bane making a solid debut and Paolo Banchero starring on defense.
The team’s potential for growth was seen most in Jase Richardson, who turned from a rookie into the catalyst for the Magic’s victory. Richardson scored all 13 of his points in the third quarter as he suddenly clicked with the NBA court and looked comfortable for the team.
This game was a solid place for the Magic to grow.

Lol Phillip calling it out like it is on the Heat bringing their “Heat culture” court to Puerto Rico 😂😅. This was a good win let’s keep building go Magic play the song :)🙌💙🖤🎵💫
Tristan will be really good 👍 this year 🎉
A lot of encouraging signs during this first preseason game. I'm excited to see the evolution of this team.
Dru Smith played 10 minutes and Norm Powell played well for the Heat, as far as guards go…
Why do we keep bringing up richardson's height? he measured the same height as garland and pritchard with way more wingspan and vertical than both. they seem to be doing just fine in the league.
Lets gooo we are finals bound Philip 🪄🦖
If AB has any trade value at all it’s time to move on. Offensively he’s a liability and really haven’t seen that much growth in him at all.
I still don't understand the Penda pick, Jace is a hooper though.
JR played really well, looked a bit out of shape to me. But definitely plays better than I thought he would 💪🏽
AB and Issac eat up valuable minuets despite their nonexistent offense. Jet and Issac were both a -12 as well. That’s against Miamis deep bench.
IF I HEAR “KICKED OUT TO WENDELL CARTER FOR A 3” ALL YEAR IM GONNA LOSE MY SHITE
Looking at what they did well, this game was very encouraging. The ball did not stick, kept popping, lots of movement. Pushing the pace, inside out, good defense and hustle for a preseason game. Jett putting it on the floor encouraging 50% pct. Jase wow i did not expect this type of game from him.
I noticed you didn't mention JI. One preseason game, but JI looked like last year's JI. His decision making on offense continues to hurt the team and his jump shot mechanics are not repeatable. He is consistently drifting when he shoots and he takes questionable shots that are not in the flow of the offense. That spinning 3 pointer he took made me cringe.
Only watched the first half, but I liked how Wendell played, and Tristan is gonna go beast mode this season
