Talkin’ Shop Clips | MLB Playoffs 2025

Uh, talking ball, coach ball game, coach Chop, Coach Flicky. It is I mean, we’re deep in the thraws of October baseball. Um, let’s start with Chad Chop. You’ve seen it. You’ve seen uh the Dodgers from within and you’ve seen them from without and uh they look better than ever. Are they your front runner right now? Yeah, they were the front runner at the beginning of the year. I believe I took them at the All-Star break. Uh took them before the playoffs, and I’m going to stick with uh the best team in baseball, uh the champs. You got to knock the champs off for them to not be the champs anymore. That’s just science. It is. It’s also uh math because they they have the numbers, they have the money, but you were telling me it’s not just spending money. What’s this special thing Freriedman’s got going on up there? Yeah, we were talking about it before we went on the air here. Uh he showed it in Tampa. It’s it’s leadership. It’s curiosity. He’s brilliant, but he’s humble and he’s always trying to get better. They’re never satisfied. And that permeates the building. Uh Doc is the same way. Everybody feels special, important. They take care of their guys. They take care of their staff so that their staff can take care of the players. The players have input. Um, there’s accountability. They bring in the right guys. Um, it’s a special group and, uh, I don’t see it stopping anytime soon. They want to win a championship every year. If they could win two championships a year, they try to win three. You do the math. You can’t. Sounds like the Brewers, who every time the Cubs win two, they win three. Um, uh, before I try to explain the Milwaukee Brewers, um, Coach Flicky, I mean, you’re at a Sophie’s Choice. You have your great friend and college teammate managing the Tigers. You happen to be from the Pacific Northwest. What’s going on in your heart and uh, and in your beard? Good morning, coach. Thanks for having me on. The weather internally, the emotional weather internally is harsh, confused. Uh, sometimes I find myself rooting against myself, screaming top of my lungs, “No, no, you sit down, Sean Flicky.” It’s been rough. And, uh, but I will say, beautiful baseball being played by the Mariners and the Tigers. Um, and the only possibility that I see for the Dodgers getting knocked off at any point in this journey is if a team like the Mariners or the Tigers can drag them into those 2-1 3-2 pitchers dual games because the pitching is that good. And if they can, anything can happen in those games. Uh, it comes down to one play here or there, one, you know, weird hop. And uh that’s the only chance anyone has is to pull them down into a game. Pull them out into the deep waters of pitching. See what happens. A little concerned. My man Tommy Edmund last night blocked that ball at the end. Is that a sign of things to come? If you can drag them into close games, they haven’t really been They don’t really get challenged that often. So if you can get them into those deep waters, what happens? Or is that just an anomaly and Freddy’s like, “Bro, I got you. Whats uh we’ll see what happens.” But uh thanks for having me. Playoffs are incredible. Welcome to October baseball. How about Mookie just going, “Hey Doc, hey guys, let’s roll with the wheel play. We haven’t done it since spring training.” Incredible. I mean, you talk about Wow. And Doc’s like, “Yeah, Mookie, what do you got in mind?” Well, Freddy and Muny are going to uh dive dive bomb home plate. I’m going to cover third. Uh Tommy’s going to cover first. And then Freddy, if they bun it to Muny, you’re going to go cover second and and and throw and I’m going to throw it on the run flawlessly. He’s going to catch it on the run flawlessly. I mean, what? That was a perfect left shoulder throw from Muny. Uh, beautiful. Now, Bader can’t run, so he can’t pinch run for Castanos. And Castiano’s blessed with coach ball game speed, you know, five 5740 and uh just didn’t quite get her done. But yeah, Tommy Edmund choked that one. Um he uh he I don’t know if he didn’t have a good handle on it. Great nerves. Let’s not Yeah. No, he did it earlier in the game, too. No, it’s a thing. It’s Yeah. Yeah. It’s It’s a problem. So, he’s I would not I do not expect him to be at back at second base. So, you got KK playing second. Maybe throw him in the outfield. Put him in the outfield if you want his bat in the lineup. Uh that that is I don’t know Tommy Edmond. Sure. He’s a great dude, but that that is that is yip central. We played baseball enough you’ve kind of been there where you’re like, “Oh, yay.” Um but he earlier in the game and I was like that was weird. He got it there and then at the end, holy smokes. Um, God bless Freddy Freeman if you’re a Dodger fan and if you’re Tommy Edmond. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I I’m I want to talk about the average Joe’s. They’ve got t-shirts made for them. The Milwaukee Brewers um proudly with, you know, names like uh Cheerio, with names like Ortiz, great mustache by the way. Um, you you got Yelich in there, but man, I tell you, there’s no household names in there. And they won the most games in Major League Baseball this year, and they are dominating a pretty good Chicago Cubs team. Bullpin, uh, they’ve struck out like 50 people in two games. And then how about the Toronto Blue Jays? Without Bo Bashette, I I wouldn’t be upset with a Blue Jays Brewers World Series. Also, the Mariners who’ve never been to the World Series. Mariners, Brewers, uh, give me Uker. Uh, and and give me the Trident. Um, I mean, I think the Brewers were 6 and0 against the Dodgers this year. So, what do you got? Let’s start with with explaining the Brewers, Coach Flicky, and then, um, do the Dodgers are they a little bit scared of the Brewers like money? Um, I don’t think the Dodgers are scared of anyone. I’ll answer that question first. I mean, you’ve got the pitching they have, the pedigree of excellence. They just are so stacked. I don’t think they’re scared of anyone. I think they would welcome the challenge. However, the to explain the Brewers, this is why we coach in my opinion. When you see a group of humans become something greater than the sum of the parts, you go on paper, this doesn’t make any sense really. They had more wins than anyone in baseball. But the way that they play, the way that they seem to have each other’s back, it so suits a city like Milwaukee, just tough as nails, bluecollar, you know, and I played against Pat Murphy when he was the Arizona State head coach in college. I wasn’t a big fan of being in the other dugout, but seeing his matured self, he’s got that scrappy Irish tough kind of bare knuckle brawler vibe anyway, but to see that matured into uh you know, he went he was uh council’s bench coach and now he seems to have really found that prolevel what’s the right amount of gas pedal down, the right amount of break. He’s really getting the most out of those guys. It’s impressive. And like you said, coach, a great bullpen keep you in a lot of ball games. And if you can drag people out into the deep water and you’ve got that that juice on your side, man, you can win a lot of ball games. So, um, this is great. This is why we, to me, this is why we’re here. That coolest thing is the knock on the Brewers has been they can’t hit home runs, and that’s what you need in the playoffs. Well, they just had two three-run dingers and a solo shot last night uh to bury my Chicago Cubs. So, um I mean it it’s it’s looking pretty dominant in three of the four division series right now. I feel like the Mariners might have the edge. They’ve beaten Scubble three times this year, but uh Chopper, who’s coming out of the AL? Um and then I mean, what worries you about a possible Brewers Dodgers CS? Yeah, AL. Gosh, I like I like the Mariners or the Tigers. I just think one of the whoever wins that series I think is going to come out of the AL. I just think they’re going to be able to shut down the Blue Jays pitching. I could be wrong or excuse me, the Blue Jays offense. And I could be wrong, but like that’s just my hunch. I loved how uh Flick Money uh phrased it like they’re going to drag them out into the deep waters and they’re going to pitch. And so um I like one of those two teams. Whoever wins that series is my pick out of the Ae. Uh, as far as the Brewers, and I completely agree with Flick about Pat Murphy, um, and it’s it’s accountability, man. It’s they’re fundamentally sound. They’re hard-nosed. Uh, you’re going to you’re going to have to kill them. You can’t just knock them out. They’re going to they’re going to regain consciousness and win. And so, uh, you’re going to have to put them away. And I don’t I don’t know how you do that with their pitching, just their grit. Um, it really is a reflection of the head coach. It’s the manager. And so, um, Pat Murphy’s he’s a similar dude. Like I agree with you, Flick. I you don’t you don’t love it back in the day. It was like it was a lot. It was abrasive. Um, but like he has found the perfect mix of still holding people accountability, but showing love and like um it shows. You cannot argue with the product on the field and so you know it’s a good culture. Um, judge a tree by its fruit. Um, and the brewers are nasty. Um, Dodgers are not afraid though, I can assure you. Tremendous amount of respect. I know Doc has a ton of respect for Murf. Um, and so there’s mutual respect there. Uh, I think both teams are not afraid of the fight and I think that’s going to be an incredible series if that’s how it goes. I’m kind of shocked that the Cubs didn’t get one. To be honest, I I had the Cubs coming out of that series. Bo and I were sitting eating lunch over at a Culver’s, which, you know, is from Wisconsin, so that’s Brewers country. and uh and he was like, “Who do you got?” I’m like, “I got the Cubs.” Like, “I don’t know five guys on the Brewers roster.” And then I started rattling off all the Cubs and uh and then the Brewers boat raced him 9 to1 or whatever and then they beat him again. And so to your point, they’re hitting dingers. And I’ll say this about the playoffs and had a conversation with the Dodgers with Doc before last postseason. um you’ve got to change your tendencies in the playoffs because those teams study them and then they ambush your tendency and they’re trying to hit home runs straight up. And so um just because the Brewers didn’t hit a lot of home runs doesn’t mean their guys can’t hit home runs. They’re some of the best hitters in the world and they’re going to sit on a tendency and if you’re not perfect, they’re going to hit it out of the ballpark. So teams like beware, dude. Like going into the playoffs, go against your tendency. Just because it’s been the right pitch all year doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the right pitch in that spot. So, um, what do I know? Just a podcast guy, but my oh my. Thanks for having me, coach. Thanks for having me on today, coach. I like this. I like this. I like this talking ball. Uh, we’ll do this every week uh until we’ve we’ve got a World Series champ. I still think it’s going to be Cubs uh versus Angels in the World Series. I just have that that gut, you know? I I feel it. Um but it’s all dependent on what Wally Joiner does. Uh he’s he’s really got to come up got to come up big. Uh good defense wins championships. Wally absorbing Joiner. That was my favorite player growing up. Wally Joiner. Yeah. Bang. It doesn’t get any better than this.
