MLB Network | Michael Kay GOES CRAZY on New York Yankees are eliminated, Blue Jays advance to ALCS

The momentum tilted back in the Blue Jays direction. Five pitches into this game. The Blue Jays already had a run against Cam Schlitler. Now, Schlitler did a good job tonight, but the players around him did not. The Yankee offense did not produce. They only had a home run from McMahon until they scored one more run on a hit by Judge in the ninth inning. And guys, I think this will be remembered as a disappointing and exasperating finish for the Yankees. They were so excited after winning that game three, their third elimination game that they had won. They needed to win a fourth one and a fifth one to get to the ALCS. But Michael, they fall short against the Blue Jays. Kind of a little bit of a microcosm of the whole season. Ups, downs. You know, you can’t be more up than yesterday with Judge’s home run and the comeback from 6-1 and then the down. The down is today like the when they were 20 and 31 in the middle of the season. They just didn’t get big hits. They didn’t make plays in the field. Jazz Chisum Jr. with a huge um E4. That would have been an inning ending double play. And I agree with Jack. Um Slitler was great. He was Was he as dominant as he was against the Red Sox? No, because we told you before the the game, the Blue Jays are a better team than the Red Sox. They’re a better offense than the Red Sox, but it was the Blue Jay pitching that did in the Yankees. The Yankees have hit that bullpen on Sunday. They hit it on Tuesday, and they didn’t touch it today. Disappointing loss. Yep. And I thought John Smoltz during the broadcast made a great analogy that I’m now going to repeat. You play this Blue Jays team if you’re the Yankees and they’re constantly jabbing. They’re just poking and proddding at you and that’s the kind of offense that they play. And when it was 2 to1, the Yankees feel that they’re a swing away. Suddenly it’s 4 to one and it became more ominous. And Michael, you mentioned this game kind of a microcosm of the season. And when they would lose, they would tend to not have clean games defensively. That happened again tonight and we talked about it before the game. Jack brought it up. They have to play a clean game and the the Chisum era is really, really big because it should have been seven strong innings for Slitler. And you know, also to piggy back on what Jack said about this Blue Jay team, they don’t swing and miss a lot. I know that they struck out 11 times yesterday. Not today. And you could also tell Slitler did not have the electric stuff that he had against the Boston Red Sox, but it was certainly good enough to keep the Yankees in the game. And it was good enough to get a win if the Yankee offense could do anything. And the Yankees couldn’t do anything against all the parade of relievers that the Blue Jays brought in. Yeah. And after 12 strikeouts last time out against the Red Sox, he had just two. And he did have not extensively, but there were a few longer at bats against him. Eight, nine pitches. One was 11 against Santandere. That’s who the Blue Jays are. But as Michael just said, they make that double play to end the seventh inning. And if you’re Cam Schlitler on a night where you weren’t getting a lot of strikeouts on a night where you weren’t getting a lot of swing and miss, you figured out a way to hold the Blue Jays. Well, it ended up being four runs, but it was two earned runs against him. He had fast ball, he had sinker, he had cutter. He might have been a little overly reliant on the cutter. Perhaps could have used the curveball a little bit more. That’s a pitch that he has featured a lot, but we didn’t see him go to it today. But you go out there and you take your lumps sometimes as a pitcher. It was the Yankee offense that simply didn’t do anything tonight. And that really was a problem as reliever after reliever shut them down. Yankees left a lot of runners on base, guys. In the last four innings, they left eight men on base. Michael, you talked about this. Eight pitchers used seven out of the pen. And it’s for as much as we lauded Aaron Boon last night mixing and matching perfectly to get six and two/3 shutout innings out of his guys, the Blue Jays got a great job from their pen tonight. Yeah, Schneider and the pitching coach Pete Walker did a great job. They set it up beautifully. They matched up against the Yankees. Yankees tried to match up with a bullpen game by going left, right, left, right. But there were a lot of outs in there. So, it made it easier for Snyder to bring in say a left-hander because the righthanders were outs when you came to Vulpi. Vulpi had an awful series. He was one for 15 with 11 strikeouts. That’s an automatic out at the bottom of the order and it made it easier to mix and match for Snyder and the Yankees just didn’t get the hits. Yeah. Too many vacant bats from the Yankees. Michael mentioned that Vulpi stretch. He actually in his postseason struck out in 14 of his last 18 played appearances and there were outs up and down that lineup for the Yankees. And we’ve talked about Schneider’s demeanor after last night’s game and even before today’s game. The Blue Jays took a punch from the Yankees last night. That was a huge punch and that momentum should have been in the Yankees favor. But I just think that Schneider had such confidence in the way that he was going to manage this game and deploy his relievers. He never ended up using Yavage. He never ended up using Gauman. He had them. He didn’t think he needed to deploy them. And he just had every matchup set up the way that he wanted to. And the Yankees never spoiled any of that. Even though they had so many runners on base, especially at the end and the end of the game, if you think about it, everybody’s waiting for Bellinger to get on. If Bellinger could get on, then it comes down to Stanton. With one swing, he could tie the game. It seemed like it was so close the entire game, but they could not get the big blow to get back into it. Yeah. You go back to the bottom of the eighth, wells up, bases loaded. Hoffman had just walked a batter. You’re thinking this might be the opportunity that they have. One swing in the back could knock in a couple runs. A home run would tie the game. They were just looking for that breakthrough hit and they couldn’t find it. And Wells is a selective hitter and he’s actually a hitter who has performed well in this postseason. I think in that moment he’s thinking I can possibly ambush Hoffman. Hoffman threw that splitter. It was up in the zone, but Wells attempting to go the other way just hits a fly ball to about medium left field. So, you had their closer on the ropes right there, but again, it’s a four-run deficit at that point. Not to harp on it, but Chisum makes that play. 2:1 or 3:1 is so much different than 5 to one. The mountain was a lot higher for the Yanks. And I know I know what fans were saying at that point. The guy’s having trouble throwing strikes, so why would you swing at the first pitch? I’ve talked to so many hitting coaches about it and managers as well. And their defense is, well, he’s got to throw a strike, so you’re going to jump that strike. But you got to do better than that. You have to do better than a lazy fly ball to left field. So the outcome was not the thing that you wanted. But the approach, most hitting coaches agree with it because they think you’re going to get a cookie. The guy has to throw a strike. Well, let’s go inside the lines courtesy of Motorola Razer Ultra. This was the starting lineup and the outcome of the Yankees box score. See Gisham 0 for five. Austin Wells 0 for four. Vulpi 0 for three with three strikeouts. Yankees managed just six hits. They struck out 10 times. They left 10 men on base including seven in those last three innings, Michael. So it was a slo and there’s too many on that board. Compared to last night when they had eight different players get hits. Well, last night the offense finally woke up. But if you look in that lineup and you look at that box score, there’s a lot of empty calories there. There are a lot of easy outs for a pitcher to get. I mean, Anthony Vulpi did not have competitive at bats in the series. I don’t know what happened to him because against the Red Sox, he looked he looked very good and the last week of the season, he looked very good. Um, Gisham had a terrific season for the Yankees. He didn’t show up in the postseason. He did okay yesterday. Today, he wasn’t there. So, you look at the numbers on these two guys. Vulpi 0 for his last 13 with 11 strikeouts. Didn’t seem like he came close on any of them. And then um Gerson four for 29, 10 strikeouts. That’s in seven games this postseason. It’s hard to beat another team with seven batters to the other team’s nine. Yeah, you’re looking at those numbers and you are what your numbers say you are. And as far as the entire Yankee team against the Blue Jays in this series, Judge was 9 for5. The rest of the Yankees lineup 25 for 121. That’s a 207 batting average. So, you’re not going to win many games with that kind of output from everyone other than your superstar unless you pitch brilliantly. And the Yankees starters definitely did not pitch brilliantly in this series. Schlitler did his job tonight, but the starting pitchers did not pitch well in this series. And then the offense tonight was absent for most of the night. I’m I’m sorry on it, but it becomes a subject every year. Do you have any reason to think you won’t be back managing the team next year? No, I’m I’m under contract, so no, I’m I don’t expect anything. Yeah. Anything else for Aaron? All right, Aaron, thank you so much. Appreciate your time. Well, you can tell by the mood of Aaron Boon, the way he’s feeling. He talked a lot this season, guys, about how this team formed such a bond. He mentioned it numerous times. He mentioned it there, how he and the players did that. And I guess that’s why you see that reaction. And it’s realizing all of that, but then potential completely at the end unrealized. Yeah. The abruptness of the season ending hits everyone hard. It hits you especially hard when you did have high hopes. And let’s be honest, the Yankees had high hopes. They finished the season with 94 wins. They went on a 32-12 streak to finish the season. Yes, they played against some lesser teams. They played the teams that were on their schedule. And Bob, you talked about it towards the end of the season. Boon said he feels that this team is potentially as good as any team he had been around in the last several years. He said they had to prove that and they had to reach that potential. They didn’t do it in this series. The Blue Jays outscored them 34 to 19. We watched every pitch of this series. The Blue Jays made more big plays. The Blue Jays were pest toward the Yankees. The Blue Jays deserve to be the team that advance. You know, when you hear that the the team is close, you know, I get a chance to travel with them during the year. They are close. They all like each other. They hang together. But that has to manifest itself on the field. I mean, baseball is a sport where you could actually be selfish and hate each other and still win. But just because you’re close, you’re not you’re not a point guard who’s going to dish off to the three who’s going to hit a three. No, that’s not the way it works. So, yeah, they are close and that means that they’re really really sad in the clubhouse together right now, but they didn’t do it on the field. So, closeness doesn’t really that’s not what you’re building. You you have to build the best team possible. And this Yankee team came up short. This is a team that went to game five of the World Series last year and they went back and they they made some changes obviously big changes and they thought that there was going to be the next step. The next step is to win and they got knocked out in the division round. So yeah, it’s great that they’re close, but really what does that mean? Well, what I would say is the way it manifests itself is a game like yesterday and that’s why it was so tantalizing going into game four that something could carry over from that game. But there those moments were too few and far between. Yeah, but I I I totally understand what you’re saying, but yesterday’s game had nothing to do with closeness. It had something to do with the greatness of Aaron Judge and the big uh home run by by by Chisum. You you you have to have the talent. Again, the the 778 Yankees, they they didn’t get along. Uh the the the Oakland A’s team that won three in a row, they hated each other. Now, the Yankees 90s team, they did get along. I mean, it’s always nice to get along, but that’s not the necessity. Necessity is to do it out on the field. And today they didn’t do it out on the field. Yeah. I think what he’s saying, you’re taking it very literally. It’s in the moment that they just lost. He knows this team’s never going to be together again. We know that some of these guys aren’t coming back. So, I think there’s a little bit of reflectiveness from Boone. You’re absolutely right. You’ve got to perform on the field. That’s who cares if you get along. If you get to the next round or you get back to the World Series, that’s what you will be remembered for. So, I think that’s some of what is going on with Boon right there. He answered a question at the end from Joel Sherman of the New York Post about his future. He kind of had a little smile when he said, “I’m under contract.” But there will be a ton of offseason questions, some which we will cover in this show, because the Yankees were supposed to do better. They were supposed to advance more than they did. And they’re going to have to answer a lot of questions about why they didn’t

  1. It’s pretty impressive that a team of one star surrounded by a bunch of janitors and plumbers was able to beat the Yankees in 4 games. For a team with zero aces and a bad bullpen, Toronto def has to be the best Cinderella we’ve probably seen since Tampa Bay 2020. They remind me of Cleveland last year. A lovably mid team of slap-hitting overachievers who miraculously made it to the ALCS. This was the BJs Super Bowl so you gotta give them credit. With Bichette gone in the offseason and a staff full of aging gym teachers like Bassit, Gausman, and Sherzer, they might have the least amount of assets of any team in the AL who finished over .500 this year. No way they finish in the top 3 of the AL East the next few years.

  2. These commentators always talk about the pitches the pitcher threw or didn't throw, but isn't it actually the catcher who decides what should be thrown? Sure, sometimes the pitcher shakes him off, but I am fairly certain that most pitches are decided by the catcher, who never gets credit. Or blame.

  3. A disappointed year for the Yankees the first thing they need to do fire Boone and the the General Manager need pitching really bad relief and starting and the roster isn't to bad but I would try to trade Slanton a waste of money

  4. Is anyone really surprised? Honestly… this team was not good this year. They beat up bad teams. Nothing more. They got to exactly where they should have and where they ranked in the AL. 4th or 5th in the AL.

  5. I thought Michael Kay was erudite and eloquent in his explanation justifying his criticism of the Bluejays, (premised upon run differential) but, in the end, the team that deserved to win, won the game and the series. As for Aaron Judge, he’s a future Hall of Fame player who takes criticisms with dignity and it’s unfortunate so many NY fans take out their frustrations on him.
    In any event: Go Jays!

  6. You can’t give good teams extra outs. The Jays had 2 errors on Tuesday night and the Yankees won the game, tonight it was the Yankees with the huge error by Chaz. What a beauty game eh . Go Jays

  7. And he takes out McMahon for Rosario. Maybe he should've removed Volpe for Rosario because Volpe had probably the worst playoff series out of a major league ballplayer.

  8. Blue jays fans not used to success i see, im used to it. Seen a whole lot of Yankee championships. So with that said, we'll done Jay's, better win the chip.

  9. Schlittler was certainly not the problem. Like had been the case so many times during the regular season, the offense disappeared. When they don't hit homers, this Yankee bunch often has difficulty scoring. And it isn't as if Toronto sent an ace to the mound. In fact, they didn't pitch a middle of the rotation starter who had a great night. The Yankees were shut down by a procession of average major league RPs nicely mixed by Jay manager, John Schneider.

  10. Their offence failed them. They only had 1 home run. Just like Buck Martinez said they are not a good team unless they get home runs they cant win games here is the proof and not just game 4 either. The yanks ARE NOT A TEAM they are a collection of players with ego's and low talent and a lousy manger. Now new york can go lick their wounds all winter and we will see if management can come up with players to make a real team next year

  11. This should not be a surprise. The Yankees were a combined 28-34 against playoff teams. Counting the playoffs they were 6-10 against Boston and 6-11 against the Blue Jays. They had a losing record against 7 of the 11 playoff teams. This Yankees team was just not that good!

  12. John Smoltz is a piece of crap, worst announcer on TV, so obvious he is pro Yankee, never did he give Toronto credit, the Blue Jays stuck it up every one’s ass , as far as Jazz goes, too much bling and Flashy, grow up clown, go Blue Jays😂😂😂, DAAAA Yankees lose

  13. They keep talking about the “big blows” the yanks could have had. Jays don’t look for big blows they just put balls in play and don’t strike out. That’s why they wjn
