Bill Guerin’s Moment Of Truth: Wild Have Their Superstar, Young Core, Cap Space – Now Can They Win?

Sure fucking hope so. A lot more fun when they do
I expect Bill Guerin to be active towards the deadline.
If you have a competitive team towards TDL, you sell some younger mid-tier assets/picks to buy what’s needed on the roster.
If you have a struggling/injured team towards TDL out of contention, you move some tenured guys (who do not have NMC/NTC) to contenders and it allows your young guns in the org to get ample NHL ice time. This will show the org which young guys have what it takes to contribute for the following season and beyond.
The least ideal situation is that we have a middling Wild team that’s like 5-10 points out of playoff contention at the TDL.
As long as we dont trade a second for an aging vet only to get 0 goals and ruin our season by being 2 feet offsides then yeah probably.
Coming out of the gate strong will be huge. If they look good *before* getting Brodin, Zuccy and Sturm back in the lineup AND have ammo to buy at the deadline…we might finally be on to something.
No, it’s Minnesota sports. It will get our hopes up and then lose in Game 7 in overtime. We will blow a 3rd period lead of 3 goals with 2 min left.
> If Kaprizov was going to spend the rest of his career in Minnesota, he needed to know the team was as committed to winning as he was.
He didn’t know at 16m, but was convinced at 17m? But all he cares about is *winning* , right….
I sure hope so.
As long as BG doesn’t trade any high value draft picks for a high school JV ankle bender who cant drag his feet when entering the offensive zone… I think we win the cup
Guerin has done a good job of buying low on players. Middleton, Faber, and Gustavsson stocks have all gone up since coming to Minnesota.
The thing Guerin hasn’t done yet is trade for a top of the lineup player at the time of the trade. This is what he needs to do ideally this season.
Haven’t been this excited for opening night since we initially signed the big two
Look at the teams that have won the Cup.
Do we have these now?
Two great goalies
One superstar, two even better
All four lines producing goals
Top tier defense
Great passing, few giveways/mistakes
Balance of power and speed
Great PP and PK
Tons more time spent in the offensive zone than defensive zone
Just win attitude
I believe in Harvey De- I mean Uncle Billy
What’s important is making sure Guerin has something to fall back on. He gave up some high picks for Jiricek and Nyquist. If he’s going to give up anymore, it needs to be if the Wild are solely in playoff contention OR a top line person is available. Fletcher threw away 1sts and 2nds for Moulson, Hanzal, Bergenheim, etc. Guerin shouldn’t have any trouble having 3rd/4th line guys by now. The issue is 2 more Top 6 spots or one more elite player.
Fletcher was either forced to or was himself convinced that Parise/Suter/Koivu etc. was enough to make it. Fletcher had no more first rounders to backfill the roster by the time it was obvious Granlund/Coyle/etc. were good, but not elite players.
Guerin has kinda been wading into “competitive trades,” but not to the point that he’s completely boned. If Yurov, Ohgren, etc don’t work immediately, don’t throw them away unless a real high end trade is actually to be had.

I think the way to approach things is to target the UFA you want next offseason at this season’s trade deadline.
I think Boldy being on our PK might be the biggest difference maker this season. He’s no doubt been our best PK’er since he joined IMO
I’ll believe it when I see it. But, I don’t expect to see it.
