MLB Network | Dan Plesac BOLD PREDICTIONS Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of ALDS

Well, the Tigers came alive at home. They ended their sevengame home losing streak. It had been a while since they won a baseball game at Kame Park. As you go inside the numbers of this division series, pitching, pitching, it’s all about pitching, right? Well, if that’s the case, then game five, even though it’s going to head back to Seattle, is advantage Tigers because of this guy. I’m going to just do what I do best, and that’s that’s play baseball and try to execute pitches. that’s when I’m at my best. The game’s still the game. Every game means a ton. So, it’s not like game one or game two or game three are any different than game five, you know, in terms of of wins and losses. Um, but the game stays the game, you know, and and that’s kind of what you’re going to hear me reiterate is I just need to be focused on, you know, being pitch by pitch and trying to execute the game plan that, you know, that we’ll create. This is what competition is all about. This is why you play the game, you know, for game fives. In seven games, right, you have an opportunity to throw three. I threw three against Cleveland, you know, my last three starts of the year or, you know, two and then first game of the wild card, but yeah, it’s competition, you know, and I think that that’s going to bring out the best in everyone involved. And that’s why this game is so beautiful. You know, we’re going to be able to go experience that on Friday. Here’s a stat that if I was a Mariner fan, I would hate this stat, but I want to give it to you because it’s television. We’re supposed to be provocative. Detroit has lost all three of Scubble starts against Seattle this year. I would hate that if I’m a Mariner fan. I hear you. I hear you. I would hate that because there is no human that does this for a living, Dan. Throw a baseball off a mound that is more competitive than Terrick Scubel. And you don’t think he’s going to go there and silence the critics and write the wrongs? Yeah. And and I’ll tell you what he does. He energizes an entire plane that got on an airplane to fly to Seattle knowing who’s pitching game five. And every position player, they may not admit it, but when you get on that plane, you pack your bags, they expect to win game five because he’s pitching. And it it is such a lift to every team when you have a Randy Johnson, a Kurt Schilling, a Pedro Martinez, a John Smoltz. He’s in that category. He’s in that category that it doesn’t matter where you play, what planet, what time zone, day game, night game, rain, snowshine, that guy’s going to show up. So, I think that’s why the conf the confidence has to be really high playing on the road. I I love his press conference. You saw the confidence just oozing out of him. He knows who he is. Mhm. And he’s going to go What you’re going to have to do as Seattle is what they did last time to beat him. Not just the home run, but you have to outlast him. You’re You have to They He throws a shut out, we’re throwing a shut out. And that’s what it’s going to have to be. It’s going to have to be a bullpin game. And that is where the Tigers have won. You can forget all the different things we we’re talking about. Scoo’s been great. Gilbert’s been great. You know, you go ahead matched up against guys all the way through. It’ll be Kirby Castillo. Yeah. The two starters. Those two, they they’ve been great as well. But the key to the series why it’s 2-2 has been the bullpens. It’s been the bullpen period. And the Mariners have been using four pitchers every game. They got to find somebody else that’s going to be able to tow that slab and get it done for them. Other than going to break and, you know, styling my hair, I try, it’s part of my job. I try to channel the baseball fan that is watching, right, that loves their team. And Dan Wilson, first full year as a manager, if I’m a fan of the Our part of our job is to second guess what they do. And Dan, I I’m sorry that we do this, but this is part of the job that we have. All right. I if I know TKO is looming game five, I’m managing this game like it’s game seven. Not just because I’m afraid of Scooble facing Scooble, who’s one of the top five pitchers in baseball, but I have an off day. Today is a travel day for this team. So, if I have a lead with Bryce Miller on the mound, who’s had an RA well north of five all year long. If I have a lead after three innings, I have six innings to go and I got Bazardo, Brash, and Munoz who’ve been lights out, right? They’re each giving me two innings and I’m stepping on their throats and I’m going to win this game. I’m managing this game like it’s game seven because I want nothing to do with one of the top five pitchers in all baseball. Might be number one on the DP top 25. I don’t want anything to do with Terk Scubble. But he didn’t do that. He got greedy with Bryce Miller and Bryce Miller went he gave him four scoreless and then he tried to get another inning out of him. What are we doing? And then Bizardo gets in the game and he he got lit up. If those guys knew, hey guys, if we have a lead, I’m leaning on you three. We’re getting after it. We’re going to go for it. Yeah. And and I think you know, you talk about these blueprints when you do a bullpen game. If I was a Blue Jays fan, I would not have liked the prospects of what was going to happen. The Blue Jays were going to minimum have to go through six pitchers. And you hope that when you pass that baton on that each one of those guys, if the game is close, none can ill afford to have a bad day. But I get what you’re saying in a bullpen for the Mariners that had been really good. So I get what you’re saying. We have the lead. Let’s win this one. Let’s play this game four like this is game five, right? And if we have the lead, I’m unleashing Bizardo, Brash and Munoz because pitching with and you were a reliever he did this. Pitching with the lead is different than when you’re pitching in a tie game or your down runs. I’ll give you a perfect example on the flip side. Yesterday I thought Casey Mai had as good a stuff as he’s had all year. After three innings, boom, AJ Hinch chaos, here I go. I’m unleashing my bullpen. Well, that’s the game we’re seeing played. It’s not just the Mariners Tigers series. We just talked about it with Chicago Milwaukee. We saw it with the Dodgers and and with the Phillies. We’re seeing it with the with you name it across the board in the postseason. That’s the strategy. And so, I think that’s what’s going to have to happen. But it’s only the strategy for starters that don’t have the elite the elite the elite stuff. I I think so. Cam Schlitler. There’s a reason all the Yankee fans were booing Aaron Boone when he walked out to the mound cuz there’s like there’s not better stuff in the bullpen. But I will say this in in in defense, you’re right. When you don’t normally play that style of baseball, which the Mariners haven’t had to do because they’ve had the last five or six years starting pitching that post every five days. But if you’re AJ Hinch and you’re the Tigers, those guys in the bullpen, I mean, if you would have told Finnegan when he got acquired at the trade deadline, hey, you might be in in the fourth inning in a game for me, he’d have been like, why? I’ve been pitching the ninth. Well, you were, but I don’t know when you’re going to pitch here. And and I think maybe with the Mariners, Dan Wilson felt like, okay, these are the roles. This is how we played it all season long, and let’s just play the way it’s worked for us. And man, you’re so right. He managed a regular season game during the postseason and there and there’s something to be said about that because we’ve seen teams we can’t have it both ways. I always say do what got you here but I understand that what when it comes to these games and the bullpin has to be handled differently because it’s just so topsyturvy. So the playoff game is totally different. We’ll see how there’s a game five and we’ll see how this all gets handled in game five, but there’s no leash in a game five. And I think what we’re agreeing on is you had to play game four with no leash. And we’ll see how Dan Wilson manages his plethora of pitchers that he will use in game five against one pitcher. Trick school’s going for a very long time. 100 heaves no matter what in that game five. Uh there are many things you need to win the World Series.

  1. I just looked up when Skubal was drafted. Nobody thought much of him and the Tigers got him in the 9th round. You never know when it comes to pitchers. The Tigers got a great pick on him.

  2. Skubal was confident every time he faced Seattle but still lost. The Mariners were confident after their blowout in Game 3 but they still lost. The Tigers were unable to string together enough hits to score all series but they finally did it in game 4. Nobody saw that coming. The Mariners batting lineup was thought to be too much for Detroit pitchers but they still beat them twice without Skubal pitching.

My point is is that all of this talking about feelings and predictions is just a waste of time. The game will come down to who can get hits and score runs and have effective pitching and no team has an advantage over the other. It all comes down to who accomplishes that on Friday and both teams are very capable of doing it and both are capable of blowing it.

  3. Fun fact: Detroit still needs to put up runs against a George Kirby that looked stellar in his first start of the series, while assuming the Mariners more potent offense doesn’t do so against a guy they’ve done it to 3 times already this year

  4. These guys are clowns….let's point out the facts…we know sports are 80% mental, so if Mariners lose(and I know for a fact they won't) it would be because of the effects of game 4 lose and taking out their confidence.

  5. This is probably the worst take they could have on Game 4… Bryce Miller literally owns the Tigers… Miller is more successful against Detroit than all but one team, and the only park he does better in than T-Mobile is Commerica Park. Dan Wilson lacked the fortitude to stay with Miller when there was a runner on… Forcing the Tigers to go to a better hitter than Meadows, who shouldn't even be a starter in a postseason game was beyond ridiculous. They want to start doing matchups in the 6th or 7th inning, sure, but force them to pinch-hit with Greene or Carpenter batting, not Meadows… That would be like Mastrobuoni coming up against Jacob DeGrom, and the Rangers bringing in Robert Garcia, so they can face Julio Rodriguez, though Jahmai Jones (.970 OPS vs LHP) is better against southpaws than J-Rod (.806 OPS vs LHP). Dan Wilson should've stayed with Miller until the game was 3-3. Considering that the bullpen was overused and overexposed during this series. Worst case, the bullpen is fresh on Friday while the Tigers have to empty their pen again. Instead now they are going to have another pitchers duel with a taxed and overexposed bullpen. I hate the way he handled the game… I hope Dan Wilson finds his balls, and I'm not talking the ones with 108 double stitches in red thread.
