🔴LIVE 🔴 Detroit Tigers VS Seattle Mariners /October 09/Baseball Division Series 5/MLB THE SHOW 25
On the corner of Dave Kne House Way and Edgar Martinez Drive, welcome to T-Mobile Park. MLB the show brings you the American League Division Series. It’s the Detroit Tigers taking on the Seattle Mariners. Boo Shami alongside Chris Singleton. Postseason baseball sing. It’s always great to see and be a part of. Oh, Boo, you just never know what’s in store when it comes to postseason baseball. You do know you’re going to see some amazing pitching players coming out of the bullpin throwing a hundred, some incredible defensive plays, some big knocks, and maybe a mistake or two that’ll live on forever. All I do know is I’m pumped up for this one. First pitch coming at you right after the break. just about set to go. And starting this one, Bryce Miller. What’s the word on him? Well, he comes at hitters with a five pitch mix. So for him, it’s always interesting to see how he utilizes those weapons. He may lean on one or two pitches depending on how things are going and how things are working. But if he can control four or even five of those offerings, look out hitters, it’s going to be a tough day. He’s really going to be able to keep those guys off balance. Ready to go now? Now it’s the right fielder Carrie Carpenter. That one finds the corner. And here we go in game five. comes up empty. That’s strike two. [Applause] Popped up to the left into foul ground. Pauls it in for the one away. And now the Tigers line up for manager AJ Hinch. And it’s clear the most important job they have today is getting to the starting pitcher early and often. No doubt about that. That’s the best way to disrupt a game. But can they do it? Certainly something for us to pay attention to in this one, partner. Glabber Torres up to hit and the first pitch misses for ball one. He swings and fouls one off. One out. Base is empty. So a foul ball makes it one and two. kicks and deals. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another up the middle. Two quick outs in the top of the first here tonight. Batting third base, Colt Keith. Two outs. Base is empty. Here’s the second base, Colt Keith. on the inside corner for a strike. [Applause] Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field and makes the grab. And that is that. Half incomplete. We’ve got no score. Back here with my pal Singi, today’s starting pitcher, Casey Mai. What do you got on him, Chris? Anytime you have five pitches to work with on the mound, that repertoire can be a real weapon in terms of keeping hitters off balance. Man, it’s it’s one of those things that I’m going to be looking for in this one. Does he have a feel for all of those pitches or is he just able to get one or two over in the strike zone where he wants now? It’s tough to do to be able to command all those pitches, but if he can, he is going to be very tough for the opponent today. Slapped foul. Up and in. One and one. And that one hammered going back on this one. And that one is gone. He flexes his power with that swing. The Mariners strike first. It’s one- nothing. He just sent a jolt of electricity into this stadium with that swing. [Applause] Well, he almost robbed the home run right there. And I tell you what, he’d love another crack at it. During batting practice, you always like to work on that. And so close. But that one was just out of his reach. And now the big time power threat, Cal Raleigh. [Applause] There’s the strike. with the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered. He’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. And now one and two. Think he wanted that call on the upper part of the zone but just didn’t get it. Now he’s just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed so he can adjust his sights just a little bit. That missed by a lot. And the count now even upping [Applause] here as he fouls it away. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. into center. Makes the grab on the run. And there’s one down. And now we check out the Mariners lineup. Rodriguez. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez singing game five an elimination spot and the spotlight is focused on this guy. Everybody looks to the star players in big games like this and this is what you get paid for. Time to come through. Part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. And that’s outside. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. The wine, the kick, and the one-two. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Lined and that’s a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. A late jump and I think that was the difference on the play. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. The batter now Jorge Palano. [Applause] Pitch misses. And that’s ball one. That’s in there. Rodriguez the base runner at first with one out. Move to first. Rodriguez back on a dive. Fast ball for a strike. Here’s a one-two and a foul ball. He stays alive. Runner on the go. Got him swinging. Safe at second. And that was not close. and fifth. First base. Here’s Josh Naylor. [Applause] That clips the inside corner for a strike. Just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Bayz fires over to first that ends the inning and they limit the damage. The Mariners pick up a run thanks to this solo homer. It’s now one- nothing. the pivotal game five of the division series. Here’s Riley Green taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Miller back to work and the first pitch misses for ball one. The drama always heightened in the postseason and it leads to some really special moments. Just missed. Well, one special postseason memory for me, Boog, was facing Pedro Martinez game five of the ALDS in Oakland. And man, hit a double off the wall. Great feeling for a guy who would eventually go into the Hall of Fame. And there’s ball four. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire in bat. And next to hit for Detroit, Spencer Torqulson. That one misses. That’s five straight. Miller in his second season, 26 years old, and he was drafted in the fourth round in 2021. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. Tying run is at first here in the top of the second. In the air, foul off first. Naylor sizes this one up. Corrals it and there’s one down. Third base, Zack McKin. Now the third baseman, Zack McKinstry. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. They get it in quickly. So first and second now, one out. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one. He pulled it hard into the outfield. And even when you keep it on the ground, it feels great when you hit a missile like that. Two on, one out. And next up for the Tigers, Dylan Dingler and fouled off. And a big swing and a miss. Sometimes being lucky is a swing and miss. If he makes contact with that pitch, probably hits into a double play. [Applause] That one misses. Going to count one and two. Way to lay off that pitch down. Outside and it’s two and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Got him. looking for the strike out. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. Well, big strikeout right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. And up next for Detroit, Parker Meadows. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. [Applause] [Applause] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. [Applause] First and second, two down. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that one misses up and in. And count one and two. [Applause] On the ground. Crawford and that is the inning. Two left on. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Mariners one and the Tigers nothing. Bottom of the second. Stepping in the long ball threat. Au Heno Suarez. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. And that’s a strike. [Applause] Mike Filillmore, our played umpire, very consistent with his zone. Chris, gets a lot of praise for that. He does, Boo. And I think that with any umpire, you really just want them to be consistent. Fillmore’s a guy that does a good job back there in that way. So, people around the league really appreciate his consistency and it’s through for a hit. Had a good start to the inning. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So, I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bats speed. And now for Seattle. Dominic Kzone. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Come on. One at second and they’ll just get the one. Batting eight right fielder Victor Rob. And now it’s Victor Robless up to hit. Look out for the double. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Got a fast ball middle of the plate, jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. JP Crawford gets a chance to hit. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul. That one fouled off. Foul chip. Oh, that got her umpire. And it looks like it got him upstairs. also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. And that one upstairs, ball one. [Applause] Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Five foul balls in this at bat so far. And these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch. Even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across. Especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. Back to the top of the lineup. Here’s the Mariners leadoff man, Randy or Rosarena. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two aboard, two outs. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Next offering is in for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. And now two and two. [Applause] keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] Swang get a ball popped up. Bayz squeezes it and that’ll do it. Mariners leave a couple. They lead it one- nothing. Onto the third inning. Here’s the veteran shortstop. Javier Bayz out towards right center field. Robless long run and he makes the catch. One down back to the top of the Detroit order. And next to hit for Detroit, Carrie Carpenter 0 for one so far. [Applause] First pitch and he just misses. Blind into right. Pulls up on it and that’s a base hit. hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Here is Glaver Torres 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Top of the zone for a called strike. Carpenter the runner at first with one gone of the inning. Next offering in there for a strike. That is strike two. [Applause] Swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout. pretty much textbook pitching for the three pitch K right there. Jumped ahead 02 on two pitches he didn’t want to go after at the plate. Then knowing he’s going to be a little more aggressive trying to protect, he expands just out of the zone where he couldn’t do anything with it. He gets the strike out and keeps the pitches thrown to a minimum. Very nice. And next up for the Tigers, Colt Heath flyed to right his first time. And that one sliced fouled. next offering is in for a strike. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end. Trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front. So off speed pitches may be a good complement to that fast ball. Two outs. Fights that one away. Still one and two on the ground to first. Jumps, but it’s off his glove. Gets it there in time though. He keeps his composure and they get the out. Tigers leave one and it remains one- nothing set for the bottom of the third. Now the Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh Raleigh. And that’s downstairs. Ball one. Well, these Mariners doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. He’s only giving up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. And another ball. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] And a foul ball. That one misses. So a leadoff walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. And up next for Seattle, Julio Rodriguez. One for one with a single so far. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. The Mariners knew what they had. Signed him in July of 2017 for a little under $2 million when Rodriguez was just 16 years old. Runner on the go. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. Throw on to Torqulson. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. Up next for the Mariners, Jorge Palano up next for the Mariners. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Singi, he’s got a history of coming through in big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. On the corner for a strike. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. No, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. And now it’s Josh Naylor. [Applause] That one off the mark. One and0. man at second. That’s off the inside corner. Two and 0. Swinging a foul straight back. [Applause] Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. That’s back and it’s off the wall. Run comes in from second and they take a two-run lead. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. So close to blasting that one out of here the other way, but that’s very tough to do when you take on the outfield gap like that. Beautiful swing though. Let the ball get a little deep and drove it to the opposite field. So runner at second, two down. Auheno Suarez up next for the Mariners. There’s the strike. Runner at second. Two down. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. Swing and a miss. And that one missed by a ton. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count in this situation. We’ll keep a close eye on his approach. Man on second, two down, and misses inside. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Next pitch, misses inside. Two balls, two strikes. That one called just inside, I think, and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. But he clearly thought it clipped the corner. 3-2 now. Dominic can zone on deck for the M. [Applause] [Applause] And ball four to a board. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, now batting leftielder. First and second, two outs. Here’s the left fielder, Dominic Canzone. He’s 0 for one. in for a strike. First and second, two down here in the last half of the third. That one a little bit high. Ball one. Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. [Applause] Sliced hard but foul. Off the mark there. And that’s ball two. Got him. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. Fifth and final game of the series as we move to the fourth. It’s the Mariners two and the Tigers nothing. Back at T-Mobile Park, all set for the start of the inning. Now, here’s the Tigers cleanup hitter, Riley Green. First pitch, just misses. He’s been pitching well, but going through this middle of the order, second time through, we’ll see what kind of adjustments are being made. Just missed. 2-2 now. Stays alive. The 2-2. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. a little bit high. Three and two now. Now in this three ball count down in the ball game, you’ve got to be very selective. Take your walk if they’ll give it to you. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Pretty good spot on the outside, but just couldn’t quite clip the zone. That’s a stone cold tape. And now Spencer Torqulson. He popped out his first time. Fast ball for a strike. It’s just been an impressive outing so far. Continues to pound the zone. from pitch after pitch and he’s been able to stay down. That’s what’s been key. Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] swings through it for the K. Puts the tag on him and it’s a double play. You know, Boo, this is the part of the game that often time is overlooked. This is the grunt work. Great job of the catcher using his body to deaden that pitch. Keeps it close and then throws a strike down to second. Hats off. Foul ball. Ground ball up the middle. Crawford. And he has thrown four shutout innings. Three up, three down for him there to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Mariners two and the Tigers nothing. Back in Seattle, John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Victor Robless. first offering and it just misses. That one the other way. Hauls it in. One away. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. JP Crawford up next for the Mariners. Went down on strikes his first time through. And he swings and misses at the initial offering. And it’s fouled away. Good eye right there. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Got him swinging. Man, that slider bearing in on your hands like that, it’s just so tough to fight off. It’s kind of like a cutter and just can eat you up, saw you off. Tell you what, hitters have nightmares about that pitch. Perfectly executed out there on the mound. Rosarena stands in with two away as he takes a ball. There’s a strike inside corner. That’s a strike. One and two. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Mariners go down quietly there. They’re up two nothing. The pivotal game five of the division series. Now here’s the Detroit catcher Dylan Dingler. Miller back to work and there’s a foul ball. Well, these Tigers as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some swing and this one’s blasted. It’s got a chance. Long gone. He shoots one out to right and they’re on the board. It’s 2-1. So frustrating for any pitcher. Finished outside the zone and he still managed to get punished with a home run. His bat looks like it’s in the zone for such a long time and that gives him the ability to get barrel on it and hit the ball out to any part of the park. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers just off the inside edge. Well, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. We’re here in game five of this American League Division series. And that is out of play. One-1 now. That clips a corner and a swing and a miss and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Pretty simple plan of attack on the mound right there, huh? Yeah. Nothing but fast balls. They just kept putting down the number one and letting it fly. I like it. Yeah, me too. And I’d love to hit against that. But of course, when you’re in the box, you think he’s bound to change speeds on you at some point. You’re just kind of locked up. Sort of like reverse psychology. The batter now, Javier Bayz. And a foul ball. One out. Base is empty and a run in. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Late with the swing there. Man, that’s just a nasty splitter. Bottom falls out of it. You don’t see a lot of guys throw that these days, but I tell you what, he’s got a good one. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, that’s the effect of the splitter that you’re looking for on the mound. Really nice pitch right there and had him out in front over the top. I’m sure the batter was thinking he was getting something else. Perhaps a fast ball with a little more straight and vo to it in the air left side. Kenzone under it. He’s got it. And that is that. Detroit making up ground with this homer. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re watching the American League Division Series on the show. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Kaider Monttero. still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. And now the switch in catcher, Cal Raleigh. He is at the top of the game in terms of defense at the catching spot. And the first pitch misses for ball one. It’s so impressive because these guys have to do so much study and preparation for their pitchers, for opposing hitters, and really their number one job is to guide that staff through a ball game. And so when you also can turn it up offensively and be a force there, that is a win-win, every manager’s dream. That one misses. Three and one now. And as well, lots of pop in that bet. So you combine the slug with really good defense. Swing and a miss. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Swang and a miss. Struck him out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Julio Rodriguez up next for the Mariners. One for two. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. That’ll fire up the dugout and they add to their lead. It’s 3-1. This crowd is on fire right now. They’re going nuts thanks to that home run. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. And that one fouled off. One run across to the frame so far. Last half of inning number five on its way to the corner. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. Good eye in that spot. [Music] Got him swinging. Pulled the string on the change up. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Naylor in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Lifted in the air down the left side. And that’s a fair ball. Au Heno Suarez up to hit now. Suarez goes 5′ 11 in 215 lbs and he was born in Venezuela. That one close rule to ball and that’s ball one. Check swing called strike. Naylor off of first with two away. This one in the air. Torqulson. He makes the grab and that ends the inning. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further and this is now a 31 ball game. This is the American League Division Series on the show. Top six. Glabber Torres up to the plate. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Some activity in the Mariners bullpen. Emerson Hancock appears to be getting loose. Spire getting cranked up as well. That’s off the mark. One and two to count. Good take by Torres. [Applause] left field. Kenzone puts it away for the one up, one down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Ke in the box for the third time today as he takes that one off the plate just off the inside edge. just missed. That one is inside ball four. And I mean, oh, so close. That just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. [Applause] Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Up next for the Tigers, Spencer Torqulson up now for the Tigers. Go for two in this one. Just missed. There’s a strike. [Applause] That one is absolutely belted back there and gone and we are starting over. It’s 33. Always scary for a pitcher when a guy can take a fast ball down the middle and hit it to the opposite field. No holes in a swing like that. And that time that ball was hit hard. And here comes the Mariners manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Bryce Miller is done. Just never found his groove. Wasn’t able to settle in. New arm coming on. Back in a moment. New pitcher for the Mariners, Caleb Ferguson. And they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think that’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. Here’s the third baseman, Zack McKinstre. [Applause] He swings and fouls one off. Hit in the air. Left field. can zone and that’ll do it. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. We’re tied now at three apiece. Well, we go bottom six now. The left fielder Dominic can zone. Bottom of the zone and a called strike. Tigers bullpen with some action. Troy Melton getting loose for AJ Hinch. Holton also getting ready. And they’re at the knees. And it’s 0 and two. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. The O2 fouls that off to the left and will do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with the fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. Oh, that high force seam fast ball has become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off. They’re trying to stay back with two strikes, make sure that they can handle something off speed, and just with good spin rate, good rotation through the zone, elevate it a little bit, get a lot of swings and misses, and that’s a really nice job right there. Robless up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. Next offering is down low and the count is 2 and 0. And another ball. Well, I would expect in this three-0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. There’s the strike and the count is three and one. All tied up here in the bottom of the six. That’s out to center field. Meadows. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting. And stepping in for the Mariners, JP Crawford, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Swang and a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance. That one hops against the fence and he’s got a double. [Applause] Wastes no time there. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. Now it’s Randy Rosarena. He’s already homered here in this one. Fast ball for a strike at 95. [Applause] right side hard hit throws to first in time. They get the out on a Rosarena and that is the inning. One left for Seattle. Score remains tied at three. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the catcher, Dylan Dingler. Swinging a foul out of play. Foul ball there [Applause] inside now. One and two. strike pitch and he’ll see another [Applause] swing and a high-fly ball out towards right field. Makes the grab. One down. Parker Meadow up now for the Tigers. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. Base is empty, one away. You’re in the late stages of game five on a line. base hit all over that one right there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Let’s go. Bayz in the box now. Takes strike one. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a There goes the runner. That one out to right and that drops foul. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Going chew now. Elmo goes down on strikes here. You usually are going to see that inside fast ball a little longer coming in from the opposite side, but that pitch really got in on him right there. here. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball. Carrie Carpenter up now for the Tigers. One for three. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. [Applause] Goes down swinging for the strike out. Blew the express right by his bat for strike three. One left for Detroit. So no change in the score. It’s 3-3. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Troy Melton. Cal Raleigh digs in now. He’s a big strong guy. Can untie this game with one swing. [Applause] First pitch misses. Well, these Mariners digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve logged six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. The one two slow roller up the middle. Throw on to Torqulson and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. Good two seam action right there. Running away from the batter. Rolled over it. Got the ground out. Julio Rodriguez up next for the Mariners. He’s already homered in this game. swings through that one for strike one. Well, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see. And he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end and a base hit. So, the go-ahead run is on base with a knock. So, now it’s the four-hole hitter Jorge Palano 0 for three with three strikeouts. And that one fouled off. Runner on the move. Swing and a miss. He’s in there. Well, with that kind of elite arm he has behind the plate, man, it’s a pretty big deal when you can swipe a bag against this dude. Maybe more than anything, it prevents teams from just testing him, thinking that they can even steal a base. But right here, they successfully move that runner up to scoring position. Good job. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. Fast is outside. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. a base hit. It’s probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Big strike out there as he works to strand that go ahead run at second base. But job’s not done yet. Got to get that last out before you can exhale and get back into the dugout. It’s kind of tough to do with this home crowd applying so much pressure. And that one ripped to left. Fair ball. Rodriguez headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. The throw into second. Safe. And that’s his third hit. Well, he delivers in a huge spot right there. Well, he’s so dialed in. I don’t think he even realizes how much pressure exists out there. Very easy swing. Nice and relaxed. This is the type of approach you want to see guys take in this situation. So, runner at second, two down. Now, the third baseman, Au Heno Suarez. Got to be careful with a slugger like this because he can turn it into a three-run game in the blink of an eye. Naylor stands at second with two gone. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Looked like you got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle that way. If you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field, not up and in. And a count. Two on one. [Applause] to the left side, but it is well fouled and down on strikes and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. RBI double for the M. It’s now a 43 ball game. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Gabe Spire. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Torres in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Looking to get the tying run on base. Movement in the bullpen. Andres Munoz, the closer is getting loose. Two and0 to count. Here it comes. That one ripped but fouled. [Applause] Two- two on the way. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. swing and a miss. Struck him out and one gone. Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. And I don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to whereas you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it. And not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it. Next to hit, Colt Keith. First pitch and he just misses. Got it started a little too early. Strike one. [Applause] Swing and a miss as he was out front that time and delivers outside trying to hold a one-run lead. And we’re in the top of the eighth. [Applause] One down, base is empty. Fights it off. He’ll see another [Applause] to. Suarez sends it across to first and that quickly two away. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. And up next for Detroit, Riley Green. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. And there’s a ball. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. Swaying at a ball popped in the air. a little bloop single. Didn’t exactly square that one up, but sometimes you don’t have to. That line drive isn’t going to light up Statcast or anything like that, but it gets the job done. And he just kind of caught it on a weird spot of the bat, but he didn’t get cheated with the swing, that’s for sure. And here comes the Mariners manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Gabe Spire gives way and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, out of the bullpen for the Mariners, Emerson Hancock. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Runner at first with two away. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Well, with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. Two outs. Fouled off. He was late. Very solid inning on the mound so far here in the eighth. Holding on to this narrow lead. This is exactly what they were looking for. hit hard on the ground to short to second. Palano that’s out number three. That situation navigated to perfection by the Mariner bullpen. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. It’s the Mariners four and the Tigers three. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Holton just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Well, one-run game. Dominic Canzone getting ready to hit. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. Holton in his third season, 28 years old. And he was a ninthround draft pick back in 2018. to the right side. Over to first and a quick out number one. Up next for the Mariners right fielder Victor Rob. Here’s Victor Robless. This is a guy you got to keep an eye on when he digs in. definitely been known to drop a drag bunt from time to time and he’s pretty good at it, Chris. Yeah. And he creates a sense of urgency for the defense because of the speed, because of the ability to put down that bunt. Slice to right and it stays fair. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw in. Safe at second. [Applause] Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. One out, runner at second. And now for Seattle, JP Crawford. Check on the runner. Robless dives back in. Now you see even sluggers from time to time try and use the bunt really as a way to beat the shift. Not even close there. And that is ball one. Robless over at second. One down. [Applause] Just missed. That one missed. [Applause] Strike one in there at the knees and a full countdown. That one down the line and he takes it himself for the out. Now batting hitter Randy. So now the DH spot Randy or Rosarena. [Applause] just missed. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. Two outs and a runner at third here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Next pitch inside, ball three. Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners. [Applause] So now two on and two outs. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. They’re pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass. Now the number two hitter, Cal Raleigh, 0 for three in this one. [Applause] And that one is inside. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Little chopper rolls foul inside. Just missed. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. And a strike. Runners on first and third. Two away. Swung on. Belted. That skips over the fence. So, it’s an automatic double. A run comes in on the play. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next hitter to kind of do the same bit of strategy here. They issue the intentional walk and that’ll set up a force play at any base. Well, it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter, but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot. He’s just too dangerous at the plate right now. And there’s a base open, so it gives you options defensively to get an out. base knock here really gives them an opportunity to take control of this ball game. You don’t want that other team to think they have a shot and a knock here would be a big blow. So, they’re all loaded up. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. [Applause] Here’s a 1-1. And that one ripped into right. And that’s a fair ball. One run across. Another comes in to score. The run scores from first, extending their lead. How about that? Clears the bases. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it. And then extended through the swing for the line drive. base hit. And here comes the Tigers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Tyler Holton out of the game and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So, the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Raphael Montero gets the call from the pen. Well, they need someone to stop the bleed and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging it. So runner at second, two down. Naylor the next to hit outside. Rudder at second. Two down. inside corner and that’s called a strike. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. missed by a lot. And the count’s even at two. Man at second. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Carpenter puts it away and that is that. But four score in the inning. Three of them on this bases clearing double. Last chance coming up here for the Tigers. We go to the ninth. Here’s the third baseman, Zack McKinstry. And first offering is fouled off. Hit hard but foul off to the left. Foul ball still 0 and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Just missing there and the count is one and two. Swing and a miss and a change up in the dirt. Up with it. Fires to first. Gets him one away on a drop. Third strike. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Dylan Dingler now at the plate. Hit on the ground to short Crawford. Just one out remaining for the Tigers. Now batting center Parker Meadows. And here is Parker Meadows. First pitch just misses. That one fouled off. Y’all, this is a good time to step out of the box, take a deep breath, reset. Couple of change ups. Probably won’t see another one here. And one and two. looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. One strike away. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. swinging a bouncer. Can’t pick it up with the bare hand around first. Digging for two. Still able to fire over. Not going to get him. He’s in there. Well, he didn’t get much of that one, but it’s going to look like a line drive in the box. Score tomorrow. I’m really not sure how these kinds of hits get through the infield sometimes, but that’s the definition of a seen eye ground ball and you’ll take it any day as a hitter. [Applause] So, here’s Bayz now 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. lifted to left and that should do it. And that is the ball game. [Applause]
