Steelers News: The Ravens Just Got MORE BAD NEWS + How PIT Plans To Replace Jalen Ramsey This Week

[Music] Welcome in to Steelers Talk. I’m your host, Jack Sperry. Thank you guys so much for joining me here. And we got a lot to talk about on today’s edition of Steelers News and Rumors. First up on today’s show, we’re going to be talking about the Baltimore Ravens getting some more bad news when it comes to uh Lamar Jackson on the injury front and how that affects the Pittsburgh Steelers moving forward. Then we’ll talk about how the Pittsburgh Steelers are planning on handling Jaylen Ramsay’s absence from the lineup uh potentially for sure this week and then probably next week versus the Cincinnati Bengals uh in week seven. And then Arthur Smith took the podium today to talk about the state of the Steelers offense. Talked about his usage of jumbo personnel packages and as well as another reasoning for why the Steelers have not been throwing the ball down the field and why I think that’s okay at this point in the season. Now, if we can get 1,000 likes on today’s video, guys, I’m going to do a trade targets video on this channel uh in the coming days. All right, so if you guys want trade rumors, trade target stuff before the trade deadline here, which is in about a month here. So, trade rumors are going to definitely uh get going here, make sure you click that thumbs up icon if you want that trade content this weekend. So, now let’s get to some more bad news for the Baltimore Ravens. Already sitting at 1 and4 to start their 2025 campaign. And now as they look ahead to this week’s matchup at home versus the Los Angeles Rams, it’s looking like Lamar Jackson will be missing yet another week. Sounds like the Ravens want to be a little bit cautious with Lamar and his hamstring injury as they have a buy next week. So just get through this week, get back to 100% health and hopefully for their sake, Lamar Jackson can be back to being the elite MVP caliber quarterback that we uh have become accustomed to him being over the last several seasons. But listen, man, with without Lamar Jackson, the Ravens are pretty heavy underdogs versus the Los Angeles Rams, even at home this week. Los Angeles has looked pretty darn good so far this season, even though they’ve had a couple of tough losses uh you know, in kind of close games this year. Los Angeles is humming on offense with Matthew Stafford finding both Puka Nua and Devonte Adams. Kairen Williams when he can hold on to the football has been very efficient. And then on defense, they can win the line of scrimmage on that side of the ball as well with Jared Versen company getting after opposing quarterbacks. So Los Angeles is a legitimate Super Bowl contender on the NFC side. And Baltimore right now, you know, they are giving up 35 points a game. That’s not even a joke. That’s dead last in the National Football League by a wide margin. There’s some bad defenses in the National Football League. And you’re gonna have Cooper Rush leading the offense this week. It’s like even at home, man, I think that you’d be hardressed to think that the Baltimore Ravens are going to come away with a victory this week, which means they would be going to one and five. And then over the next week here, the Pittsburgh Steelers play the Cleveland Browns, a team that they are favored uh to beat on Sunday. They got to take care of business there, but then they also got to take care of business against the Cincinnati Bengals. And we could be talking about a week from today, guys, the Pittsburgh Steelers sitting at 5-1 with the Baltimore Ravens sitting at 1-5. And like if that’s the case and the Ravens really have a 4-ame disadvantage about halfway through the 2025 NFL season, do we really think that Baltimore is going to be the dominant team that they would need to be to get themselves back in the AFC North race? Like they would have what 11 games left on their schedule? They would need to be able to go 9-2 to just get back to what you know 10 wins and then you know if even they could they could go eight and three and still miss the playoffs at nine and eight. Usually 9 and 8 might get you that number seven seed, but sometimes it doesn’t. Usually over the last few years, you’ve needed 10 wins to get into the NFL playoffs. And you know, unless the Pittsburgh Steelers just completely collapse, like it seems like if you start the year 1 and five and the Ravens can’t turn it around immediately after the by-week, their season could be over in very short odor. But don’t get me wrong, guys. The people inside the Pittsburgh Steelers building, the players and the coaches, they can’t put their foot off the gas pedal. They still have Lamar Jackson. They still have Derrick Henry. They still have a lot of talent on that roster. And once they get healthier down the stretch, you can’t give away games to teams that you should beat like the Cleveland Browns and like the Cincinnati Bengals if you are the Pittsburgh Steelers. And it’s good to see guys like Juan Thornhill say, uh, oh, the Ravens are not done. Trust me, they’re not done. That tells me that Mike Tomlin has these guys focused in on trying to win as many games as they possibly can this year to stave off a potential run from the Baltimore Ravens late in the season. And I thought Dan Orlovski uh kind of said it perfectly today on ESPN in terms of the Steelers’ chances of winning the AFC North. He said, “This is the easiest division to win in the NFL. It would be a massive disappointment for Pittsburgh right now if it if they do not win this division.” I could not agree more with Dan Orlovski here because you know you start the season uh you know 3-1 you know he could be starting the season 5 and one and we could get to a point uh in a week’s time here where the Baltimore Ravens are sitting at 1 and5 and the Steelers are sitting at 5-1 with a 4game advantage almost midway through the 2025 NFL schedule. If that ends up being the case, man, like there’s very very little possibility that the Pittsburgh Steelers uh, you know, give up the division crown without completely collapsing. And if that’s the case, guys, I think it’s probably time to move on from Mike Tomlin as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. If Pittsburgh doesn’t win the division this year, guys, barring like an injury to like Aaron Rogers that’s like season ending or Jaylen Warren or or or DK Metaf or or TJ Watt and you you get all these injuries in the second half of the year, barring something like that. If the Steelers collapse and they can’t secure this division in a year where this is the best situation for Pittsburgh to win the division in many, many seasons, then it’s like, if you can’t win it this year, then when are you going to win it, Mike Tomlin? We got you the veteran players that you wanted. guys like Jaylen Ramsey and Aaron Rogers and DK Metaf. You built this team with a bunch of veterans that you wanted to go win now with. And even in a year where Baltimore has a down year, you can’t win the division. That ends up being the case, guys. I think it’s time for the Pittsburgh Steelers to probably consider trading Mike Tomlin, uh going and embracing a full rebuild, drafting a new quarterback next year with a new head coach, and uh trying to get a first round pick out of Mike Tomlin in a trade with a different NFL franchise. So, let me know what you guys think. down there in the comments section was the percent chance that the Steelers win the AFC North this year. Put it on a scale of 0 to 100 for me down there in the comments section. Zero meaning no chance they win the division to 100 meaning it’s already locked up. Let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. For me, I have to give the Steelers somewhere between an 80 and 85% chance right now. Um, you know, I there’s always an opportunity for the Steelers to collapse or have injuries or stuff like that or for the Ravens to completely turn around their season and be the best team in football down the stretch, but right now I think at this point we’d be pretty disappointed if the Pittsburgh Steelers don’t capitalize and win this division. This will be the pinned comment on today’s show. So, in just a second here, I’m going to tell you about our sponsor today while I talk about our sponsor. Go down there in the comments section and let me know how likely it is the Steelers win the division this season. Now, let’s have a word from our sponsor today at Prize Pix. And you and I, we make decisions every single day, but not all those decisions get you paid. But when you download the Prize Pix app on your phone for free today, you guys can actually get paid for your correct decisions. You guys can take a look at my Price Picks projection for Thursday Night Football tonight between the Eagles and Giants. Use code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That’s code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. Prize picks, it’s good to be right. So this week guys, it looks like Jaylen Ramsay will probably not be playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Steelers. I think especially with these next two opponents being the Browns and the Bengals, even though you don’t want to, you know, uh, you know, not take anyone seriously, especially within the division, I think that they do want to be pretty cautious with Jaylen Ramsey to prevent further injury and that he’s going to be ready to go for a really tough stretch for the Pittsburgh Steelers schedule coming up with the Packers, Colts, and Chargers all in a row a little ways down the line. and Terrell Austin talked about today how they’re going to have to replace him in their defense, which is difficult to do because Jaylen Ramsay obviously is the Swiss Army knife that kind of makes this entire system go. Austin said this earlier today. Ramsay does a bunch of different jobs. So certain people will pick up certain jobs that he does in that regard. So we’ll move so we’ll so we’ll move forward, see what they do well, how they do it. There may be some things obviously that they can’t do that he does and there may be some things that they do a little bit different than he does. So as far as I’m concerned guys, there’s a couple of options what the Pittsburgh Steelers could do to address Jaylen Ramsay who is their nickel defender. All right, number one is you could just plug and play Brandon Eckl in the slot. He played there quite a bit when Ramsay was taking practices off um in Latroe and you know he played perfectly fine there. He’s played both inside and outside all throughout his career. One of the benefits of having a guy like Brandon Nichols is that he can play both inside and outside. So, you know, you could just plug him in there and you can keep Deshawn Elliott and and Juan Thornne and Jordan Clark on the back end at safety. Uh, but I think what I would prefer here, guys, is I would rather go with this second option, which is I would play Deshawn Elliot as the quote unquote big nickel. That’s what they call Jaylen inside this defense is that big nickel. And honestly, they already use Deshawn Elliott quite a bit uh in a similar type of role. They blitzed Deshawn 20 times versus the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland. And you know, the Steelers do ask their nickel to blitz quite a bit. So, you know, I don’t think it’s going to be that big of a switch for Deshawn Elliot, who has played in the slot and has played nickel before in his NFL career to be able to play this role over the next two weeks. He’s also a phenomenal communicator. So, I think with the communication responsibilities that Jaylen has as the nickel in this defense, I think that, you know, having a guy like Deshawn Elliott uh kind of take up that role. somebody that’s been in this defense, knows that role better than maybe uh Brandon Eckles does as a firstear player would probably be more beneficial. And then in that case, if you’re moving Deshun Elliott out of strong safety and into the big nickel position, that means you can play Jabril Peppers at strong safety over the next couple of weeks. And listen, man, I’ve been advocating for this team to play Jabril Peppers. He had an over 90 PFF grade versus the Patriots, forced to fumble. Um did some really good things and I think he could be a real value um as a strong safety in this defense. So, personally, I think I would rather uh put Deshawn Elliot in the slot and in that big Nicholls position and then put Jabril Peppers at strong safety as opposed to putting the slightly undersized Brandon Eckles in the slot, which doesn’t really fit the Steelers defensive philosophy. But let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. Who should start uh for the Steelers defense now that Jaylen Ramsey is likely out for Sunday? you type be if you think Brandon Eckles should start in his place or type Jabbril Peppers if you think he should get the snaps uh kind of alleviated by Jaylen Ramsay’s presence out of this Steelers defense. Shifting focus here to the offensive side of the ball where offensive coordinator Arthur Smith broke down the state of the Pittsburgh Steelers offense. Spoke specifically about the jumbo personnel packages. Um, and uh, I thought he had some really good things to say about Spencer Anderson, what he brings to this uh, Steelers offense as a tight end. This is what he had to say. Spence is a hell of an athlete. We wouldn’t use heavy personnel if we didn’t think it would give us an advantage. And he’s talking about specifically both Spencer Anderson and Darnell Washington there, how they’re big bodies, but they’re also really good movers and they can move out in space and they can climb to the second level if they ask them to do that. And, you know, Spencer Anderson’s played a lot of football for this team. There’s been injuries in the past where he’s been asked to play significant snaps for this team. And then also, according to Aaron Rogers, we talked about this yesterday, apparently he’s got some pretty good hands. And the Steelers have certainly uh been pushing that narrative out there that Spencer Anderson could be getting um you know, an opportunity to catch a football for a touchdown this week. Maybe that’s just them playing mind games because multiple people at this point have hinted that Spencer Spencer Anderson is going to be used as a pass catcher in this offense moving forward. So, we’ll see if that actually comes to fruition on Sunday. But also, Art uh took an in-depth look again uh at the lack of deep passes. And you know, the Steelers media have been really peppering questions to Aaron Rogers and Arthur Smith about why the Steelers are dead last and average depth of target and why they are first in average time to throw and whether or not that that strategy is sustainable over a 17game schedule. This is what Arthur Smith had to say. It’s a very similar answer to what Aaron Rogers said a couple days ago. says, “At the end of the day, we got a lot of reps and when we call a play, I trust Aaron Rogers.” Sometimes you’re trying to set something up or hit a double a double move deep, you don’t have the look that you want. I call it the Uncle Rico move where you see guys where they just launch once against a single high and the guy just goes up and gets it. You can scheme things up and maybe they bite on it and launch it and the way you can hit the second level. So essentially he’s saying guys that he’s got multiple plays in the huddle for Rogers to decipher. And if he doesn’t see the pre-nap look that he’s looking for to be able to throw deep, he’s checking to a different play or he’s throwing the ball underneath as he should, by the way, because you don’t want to throw deep in the two high safety coverages like the Steelers offense has been seeing all throughout the start of this season. And then I thought QB coach Tom Arth, who also spoke to the media today, weighed in on this quite well. Uh gave some nice insight that I wanted to share with you guys here today. This is what Tom Arth had to say about throwing the ball deep and the lack thereof in the Steelers offense to this point. You have to play the play. If you’re chasing big plays or chasing big opportunities down the field and the looks aren’t there to do that, then you’re going to have bad days. You’ll be behind the sticks. And he’s completely right about that. By the way, he says, “For us, it’s about taking what the defense gives us and have our play calls. And if they give us tight coverage and one-on-one opportunities, there will there will be chances for us to go downfield. If they’re going to play softer zones and they play it in front, then we have to continue to be patient and get it to guys who can do something with it. And that’s exactly what the Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rodgers have been able to do through the first four games. But Jack, you might be saying at home, is this really sustainable? Is this really something that the Pittsburgh Steelers can do throughout the entire season uh and and be successful? And the answer to that question, guys, is yes. That is if teams continue to play too high safety coverages. If they continue to do this kind of stuff where they’re they’re daring you to run the football on them and they’re daring you to throw short, the Steelers are going to keep doing that. And that, by the way, they should keep doing that if you are Aaron Rodgers, especially because this offensive line isn’t the best pass protecting unit. Uh so getting the ball out fast and to uh dynamic playmakers like DK Metaf, who leads the league in yards after the catch right now, by the way, John Smith, who is a designated kind of yak threat as well, then Jaylen Warren, who’s an excellent receiving back. like the Steelers offense is kind of built to run this kind of offense if teams continue to play two high safety structures. Now, I I say I think here because there is the possibility that if teams start playing one high and zero high safety coverages and the Steelers start throwing the ball down the field more often, it’s possible that they just aren’t efficient throwing the ball down the field. And if that’s the case, we can have a different discussion. But frankly guys, defenses haven’t been playing the Steelers with enough one and zero high safety coverages to know whether or not this team can throw the ball down the field. But everything that I have seen from Aaron Rogers with his zip on his fastball, his ability to throw deep down the field when we have seen it so far, he has been pinpoint accurate. He’s been really good with it. So there’s no reason for me to believe that the Steelers passing attack can’t be able to do both. When teams want to play two high safety coverages, they can play the yak game. They can get the ball out quickly. They can do all this stuff. But yes, if teams, you know, play one more one high safety coverage and more zero high safety coverages, which is what I’m expecting from them moving forward with the way that the Steelers have these jumbo personnel looks in the run game. I do expect DK Metaf and Calvin Austin in the third and hopefully Roman Wilson to get more opportunities down the field, deep down the field. And I think that that is coming and I’m looking forward to seeing Aaron Rogers sling that thing down the field this season. And guess what, guys? Guess who’s coming to town here? The Cleveland Browns. You know what they love to play? They love to play one high safety coverages. Now, they will kind of rotate the two high safety coverages at times, but with the Steelers run game playing as well as it did uh with the jumbo personnel looks, something tells me that Jim Schwarz isn’t going to be going out there in too many two high safety coverages. So, I think this week versus the Browns, we will see the Steelers air it out a little bit more than what we’ve seen in the first four weeks. And I think it’s going to work. All right. I really do. Um, and I think that, you know, guys like DK Metaf especially, but potentially even Roman Wilson, who’s got 4-3 speed, uh, could really benefit from Aaron Rogers throwing the ball deep down the field versus these more advantageous defensive looks, uh, that, you know, I think that are going to be coming the Steelers’s way here this weekend. So, what’s you guys? Let me know down there in the comments section. Is Pittsburgh’s passing game quote unquote sustainable? Give me a yes or a no down there in the comment section. For me, the answer to that question is yes. But let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. That’ll be it for today’s edition of Steelers News and Rumors. 1. The only way Steelers can be that competitive team that we fans know they can be is if Mike goes and he’s but buddy Arthur goes if not steeler nation ain’t got no future with those 2 idiots using reck league and elementary coaching styles easy to predict

  2. Sperry you talking a lot crap about not winning the division when Tomlin has won the division many times! You act like he’s never won the division 🤷‍♂️

  3. #steelers jack i think they need to use either johnue or pat more and i know you want to trade pat but he is a big presence on this team and so what he's having a slow start he can easily bounce back and catch easy quick passes from arod

  4. I know this is off topic but how on earth did the Steelers miss on Cam Skattabo? We take Caleb Johnson at 83? We suck. Even me and my drunk buddies knew Cam was the right pick.

  5. It's Thursday night. I just watched the Giants dismantle the Eagles. And i am so pissed. I've done told everyone on here that we should've traded up for JKaxon Dart. He was awesome. Don't let the ststs play with you. He was throwng perfect, unbelievable passes. Many were dropped, including 2 in the EZ !! We take him, let him watch Rodgers, and he he's all st for next year. Which means we wouldn't have to use that pick on a QB !! FURTHER more, i also wanted Skattebo where we drafted Johnson! Only the lousey drafting Steelers could pass him up, i told a guy. Joking. By God, they did it!!! I don't care how good a DT is, he will never win you more games than a franchise QB. We made this mistake once, taking Rivera (R.I.P.) over Marino. Thought we learned. We didn't. Then we took Edmunds over Lamar Jackson, with Ben being 38 and having chronic pain in his throwing shoulder. WOW> We did it again. Then this year, we did it again!!! Quite frankly Jack, i don't know what to say……I really don't….

  6. When i met my wife the season after the Packers Super bowl loss i promised her the Steelers are worth cheering for. Every year the playoff drought continues makes me a worse husband.

  7. The division should be on lock this season unless the Browns shock everyone w this rookie qb. Ravens appear to have some Locker room problems and Cincy is just horrible.

  8. The Steelers big miss in last years draft. They had the perfect Steeler., Cam Skatterbo, now with the Giants. That dude was a one man show at Arizona State. He can run, make guys miss, catch, and block. Caleb Johnson is about to turn into a bust.

  9. My problem with you guys and Tomlin is, he can't lose ( Remember the Titans, if u know, u know), regardless of who is on the team! Yes, they gave "The Steelers", not just Tomlin, a lot of Veteran players, who….., by the way, are also pass their prime, but yet, he is 3 and 1 and on the STEELER FANS Hot seat!!! The difference, THAT THESE HATING ASS, LOOKING AT RACE FANS ARE……..HE STILL WINS WITH PLAYERS ON THE INJURE LIST, at least the best or starting players!!!! Look at the Ravens, dude can't win with his best players injured! The Eagles are looking average, the Chiefs, the Rams, I'm naming all of these teams you guys deem the BEST COACHES IN the NFL and NFL HISTORY, plus, they are all white, yes I said it, so they AUTOMATICALLY GETS A PASS!!! Y'all can also link in the Bengals and Browns coaches, when they did have better seasons than Pitt, and y'all CROWNED THEM…..Look at these coaches now, who, by the way, CAN NOT WIN WITH THEIR MAIN PLAYER INJURED!!!!!!! Look at the Goat himself…..Yes Bill Belichick, dude is sucking in college because he doesn't have a Brady!!! My point is….Mike T wins with less than ANY COACH IN THE LEAGUE, but yet, Steeler fans wants hime fire!!!! For WHO????? Point is….Be Grateful old HATEFUL ASSS CCCCCCCCCCKERS!!!!

  10. You guys are trying to jinx the Steelers with all this " they should just win every game each week, There is a old saying..on any given Sunday anyone can be beat..and injuries will play a big factor in how things go..TJ has gotten hurt the past two years..and Highsmith the same..God forbid if Aaron goes down😳😲😖😵‍💫😞
