đź”´ LIVE : Toronto Blue Jays vs Detroit Tigers |Oct 9th ALCS POSTSEASON | MLB THE SHOW 25 SIMULATION
just about to get underway and today on the hill Louie Varland. Chris, what are you looking for from him? They’re going to start this one with the opener because of the matchups. Very favorable. I think we’re going to see him empty the tank with really good fast ball velocity to try to retire these first three hitters. Now it’s the right fielder Carrie Carpenter. [Applause] Swings through that. [Applause] Next offering is down low. Next offering is fouled back. Left hand batter waits. [Applause] Swings through him for the K. Went back to the fast and it was effective. But that kind of velocity, an elevated fast, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. Glabber Torres batting with one down takes a strike. Torres starting as the designated hitter batting second in today’s lineup and he was born in Venezuela. [Applause] And that’s fouled off. [Applause] And that’s downstairs. And the count one and two. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today. It looks pretty tough to start this one. Punching out the first two hitters of this ball game. And somebody’s going to have to put the bat on the ball, put it in play, and get something going. Colt Heat in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. [Music] on the ground of first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. It’s the Tigers nothing. Blue Jays coming up. This is the American League Division Series on the show. [Applause] Back now in Toronto and on the mound now Casey M. Anytime you have five pitches to work with on the mound, that repertoire can be a real weapon in terms of keeping hitters off balance. Man, it’s it’s one of those things that I’m going to be looking for in this one. Does he have a feel for all of those pitches or is he just able to get one or two in the strike zone where he wants now? It’s tough to do to be able to command all those pitches, but if he can, he is going to be very tough for the opponent today. Ripped to third, throw on to Torqulson. That takes care of Springer. Let’s take a look at the lineup for the Blue Jays. Chris, this is a lineup offensively that could be really good for years to come. They’re deep first and foremost, but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else, it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team. And I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams, especially in a big game, big series. Nathan Lucas stands in now and watches strike one. [Applause] Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now. [Applause] Close one. Doesn’t get the call and it’s one and0. man at first. One away. [Applause] Swing and a miss. [Applause] Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. They get it in quickly. So, first and second down now, one out. He was all over that one. There’s nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield. That was ripped. Cut out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked, but definitely put a good swing on it. Addison Barger next up for the Blue Jays. Well struck deep right field. Way back and out of here. He’ll take a jog around the bases and the Blue Jays have the lead now. It’s 3 nothing. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that bat. aggressive and it paid off. [Applause] I’m sure he wanted that pitch down below the zone. It stayed up a little bit. He paid a dear price for it. Just a great swing to the ball, through the ball, and a nice round triple. [Applause] One down. And here’s the catcher, Alejandro Kirk. And that misses ball one. [Applause] He swings and fouls one off little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. Hard ground ball base knock and that hits the bag. So, a man aboard now with one away. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not when you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it. Crazy. And now it’s Daltton Vo. Basketball for a strike. Vo needs just one more homer to reach 100 in the big leagues. Yeah. and making it to a 100 homers would be quite the career accomplishment for him. Out of the more than 20,000 players to take an at bat in the majors, less than 5% have ever hit 100 dingers. [Applause] Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Has room and he makes the catch. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath a little bit and popped it out. [Applause] Anthony Santandere at the plate. [Applause] Foul ball. And that is out of play. Got to be careful here. This is the type of hitter that can punish you even with pitches outside the zone. The next offering misses and it’s one and two. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. [Applause] Squirts away a little bit. [Applause] [Music] gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Already three runs across in the frame. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. Five foul balls in this at bat so far. And these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it. Ah, that’s strike three and the third out. So, we take a break. Threerun shot for the Jays this inning. It’s now three nothing. The pivotal game five of the division. Here’s Riley Green. Var back to work. Legends really are cemented in the postseason. You think of David Ortiz heroics for the Red Sox. Derek Jeter as Mr. in November or Randy Johnson in the 2001 World Series just to name a few. Sneaks through BA’s head. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Well, on that idea of postseason reputations, got to mention players like Carlton Fisk, Reggie Jackson, and Madison Bumgarnner. We were doing that game. Those guys really shined in the toughest moments. Now at the plate, Spencer Torqulson. First pitch misses. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and there’s a rocket into the outfield. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Couple of singles back to back. Maybe a little out front of the pitch right there, but he squared it up pretty good and he kept it inside the line. And just a really nice job on the other side by the defense to hold that to a long single. And here is Zack McKinstry and a foul ball. [Applause] Ripped to third and caught to second with the throwing. No chance to get back. It’s a double play. Batting seven, catcher Dylan Dingler. And now here is Dylan Dingler singing game five elimination spot and the spotlight is focused on this guy. Everybody looks to the star players in big games like this and this is what you get paid for. Time to come through. Two outs. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Got him swinging. Tigers leave one. They trail it here. Three nothing. [Music] [Applause] We head to the bottom of the second down the third base. Ernie Clemen. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone Oh, this one high and deep. Way back there. And it’s into the bull court for a homer. An absolute smash to left. It’s 4 nothing. hitting first pitch fast ball and that’s what he delivered. He guessed right, squared it up and he made it look way too easy. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Here’s [Applause] Andre Cimenez. [Applause] Swanging a ball lifted in the air. Green makes the catch and there’s one gone. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. And the batter is George Springer. Grounded out his first time off. [Applause] One out, base is empty and a run in in bottom half of inning number two. [Applause] James Kingsley, our played umpire, consistent and maybe a little generous on the edges. Yeah, Boo he’ll give a little bit on the edges like you said, but from what I’ve seen, he usually does that when a pitcher is just commanding in those parts of the strike zone and essentially they’ve earned it. That one is absolutely belang against the wall. Makes the turn and heads for second. And that’s a two banger, man. Those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Put a really beautiful swing on that pitch right there. just didn’t quite have the combination of launch angle and exit velocity to drive it over the wall. But when you can beat a center fielder like that, you know you hit it well. One out, runner at second. And next for Toronto, Nathan Lucas. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. [Applause] and he can’t come up with it. And they’ll have runners at the corners after a one out single. Now that is first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Runners at the corners here. One away. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. And that one fouled off. Two on, one out. And that’s a little bit high. And the count is one and one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot, and that produces more base hits. Gets the slider in there for a strike. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swinging and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. And now the Toronto cleanup hitter, Addison Barger. He’s already homered here in this one. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. The next pitch misses and it’s two and one out towards right center field. Carpenter snags it and that will end the inning. Toronto picks up one on this homer. It’s now a 4 nothing ball game. You’re watching the American League Division Series on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the here’s a speed threat. Parker Meadows singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. Fast ball for a strike. 0 and one. Yeah. Yeah. And I figured you would get caut into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this ball’s going to now a rocket to right center. Way back there. And forget it. It’s out of here. He circles the bases and they’re on the board. It’s 4-1. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. Chris, that ball came out hot. So, let’s see what Stackcast has to say. Yeah, it really did, Boog. 111 mph off the bat and a really nice launch angle as well. Oh, just a beautiful swing from start to finish. And now it’s Bayz [Applause] late on that fast ball. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Sant racing after it. Couldn’t get to it before a dropped foul. And that’s in the dirt. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. You talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Not the best location with the fast ball on strike three, but when you’re pumping high 90s, you get away with some of those. More margin for error. You know, the fast ball has become such a huge strikeout pitch in the sport, and I think a lot of it has to do with all the attention and emphasis on improved spin rates. These fast balls are just exploding out of the pitcher hands and jumping through the zone. That’s off the inside corner. And that’s ball two. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. So glad these ballparks have installed the netting to protect the fans, keep things safer all around the league. [Applause] [Music] One down, base is empty. That one misses. And now it’s filled up. Three and two. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Swinging at a ground ball. Slings to first in time. Now Matty, the designated hitter, Glabber Torres. Two down, base is empty. Here is Glabber Torres. Struck out looking his first time. [Applause] That one the other way and foul ball. Two down, base is empty but one run across. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. And that skips in the dirt. [Applause] Next one misses. The countdown two and two. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Applause] outside loan and that’s ball three. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. And there’s ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. So, two down. Colt Keith now at the plate. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. And that one is in for a strike. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. And I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trusted swinging a miss and a count is 0 and two. Gosh, a little late on that breaking ball. I don’t think he recognized it out of the hand. Just a little tardy. Have to regroup here. Two outs. Luke behind second. He’s got it. And that is out number three. But not before they answer back with a solo home run. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. [Applause] Back here at Rogers Center. Bottom of the inning. Here’s the catcher, Alejandro Kirk. [Applause] line to right and that’ll be a base hit and the leadoff man aboard. [Applause] Tough game for him so far. Boo. Another hit and they’ve just been knocking him around through the first two plus. He’s got to get things back on track. Maybe junk a pitch that isn’t working or he might not last much longer. So man aboard Dalton Vo next up for the Blue Jays. Goal for one. Popped out foul to the catcher his first time off. Out to center. Meadows under this one. Puts it away for the out and there’s one down. Now batting right fielder Anthony Santandere. Now here is Anthony Santandere. He struck out swinging at his first at bat at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. And typically you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. [Applause] Hit in the air right field and that one way back there. And that is way gone and they add on. It’s 6-1. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Base is empty, one away. Here’s the third baseman, Ernie Clemen. And that’s through there for a strike. [Applause] Left field. Green in position. Puts it away for the out. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. [Applause] Jimenez in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Applause] That one at 95 missed up top and it’s one and one. that misses off the outside edge. Well, the good thing so far is that he hasn’t issued any free passes. Unfortunately, they’re making pretty good contact. So, not getting the swings and misses and making that defense work behind him. Lifted to left center way back there and that is gone. [Applause] It’s their second home run of the inning and they tack on to their lead. It’s 7-1. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop and they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that. And probably just as many didn’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. AJ Hitch makes another pitching change. Casey M is done and this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. [Applause] Titer Montero gets handed the rock out of the pen. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. [Applause] And it’ll be George Springer to step to the plate. Just missed. Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across here in the last half of the third. That one ripped. Carpenter pulls it down and that is that. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working and the lead is stretched to 71. And we’re back. Start of the fourth. leftielder Riley Green taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. There’s a swing and a drive. Baro moving back for it. Way back out of here. A gigantic blast. It’s 72. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the booth. [Applause] Power versus power right there. Like two locomotives colliding. Who’s going to win? Well, a really good job there by the hitter getting the top hand working. Powers that fast ball out of here. Here comes Torque to the plate. One for one with a single so far. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Torqulson in his third season, 25 years old. A former first round pick in 2020. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Top half of inning number four. And that misses. And now 2 and 0. [Applause] hammers that one deep left field and forget it. And they’re chipping away. It’s 73. That swing just injected more drama into this one. [Applause] Back-to-back homers. Always a special feeling at the ballpark, especially if it’s your team that does it and those guys get to slap hands at home plate. This is the kind of thing that can really fire up a ball club. Now, the third baseman, Zack McKinstry. off the plate. One and0 [Applause] popped in the air left field. Lucas hauls it in and there’s one away. Now batting catcher Dylan Dingler. Dylan Dingler digs in now. Struck out on just three pitches last time. [Applause] Hard hit right side. Steps on first for the out. Up next for the Tigers center fielder Parker Meadows. Two outs. Space is empty. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers. He’s already homerred in this game. As a batter, he’s known for performing better in these night games. He might start two for two in this one. There’s your strike. Hit hard. Base hit and that keeps the inning alive. does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Here comes the manager out of the Blue Jays dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Louis Varand gives way and a decent effort considering he’s normally reliever. Back with the new pitcher in a minute. Now pitching. Trey Savage gets the ball now. still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. Kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Bad at first. Jav Bayz digs in right side. He’s 0 for one and first offering is fouled off. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Late that time, but it’s strike two. Action in the pen down there. Justin Brew preparing to come on if needed. Rodriguez getting cranked up as well. [Applause] That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. Really good take, especially with two strikes. [Applause] Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a four-run lead at 73. Back now in Toronto. Now the number two hitter, Nathan Lucas. Nathan Lucas. First pitch just misses. Well, these Jays putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. They were obviously able to run the starter out of the game in the third. So, they’ve set the table for a win. And now, I’m sure they’re thinking it’s time to feast. The 1-1 is fouled off. So, if they’re looking to feast, are you saying they’ve already got a plate, but are looking to go back for seconds? Yeah, I’d say something like that. Hard hit left side to first. One out in the bottom of the fourth. Now batting first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Junior. And now the first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. [Applause] right through there for a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Line drive, base hit right field. So, they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now batting designated hitter. Addison Barker next up for the Blue Jays. Missed with a change up and that’s ball one. [Applause] swings and blasts one deep to left center and that one hops the wall. Vlatty coming around third. He’ll score. Comes through with the RBI. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. Split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. One out, runner at second. Alejandro Kirk next up for the Blue Jays. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. Barker, the runner at second with one away. [Applause] swings through that one out in front that time. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. He swings and hits a fly ball center field. to third. Not in time. And it’s runners at the corners with one gone. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. Baro batting with one down. Takes the strike. [Applause] Two on, one out. A change up missing. And that is ball. [Applause] That one missed. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits. to now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call timeout. Maybe the pitching coach to go out there and talk to him just a little bit. [Applause] Traffic on the bases with one already in. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And there’s the ball. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains Three and two [Applause] swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still laid on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. [Applause] Anthony Santandere next up for the Blue Jays. Hit on the ground to the right side. Torqulson steps on the bag in and over. And it could have been worse. The Jays push across a run on this double. It’s now 83. the pivotal game five of the division series. And now the right fielder, Carrie Carpenter. [Applause] Line drive rip down the left side towards the left field corner. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw to second is offline. Well, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Torres getting ready to hit. He is struck out and he is walked and that’s in for a strike. [Applause] [Applause] And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Pitch misses at a count one and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series. base hit coming home. He will score. It’s an RBI single and it’s 84. Now batting second base Colt Heat. So a man at first. Now it’s the second baseman Colt Heat. 0 for two in this one. That is upstairs for ball one. Well, these Tigers really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. The one [Applause] that’s downstairs and outside. [Applause] and ball four to a board. Oh, now he’s got two runners on after that walk and things can get out of hand in a hurry in these situations. So, he’s going to have to find a way to get back into the strike zone. First and second, no outs. And next will be the Tiger cleanup hitter, Riley Green. Ball one there. Torres the lead runner out at second. Keith at first with no outs. That one outside and that’s ball two. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Applause] that misses. They’re now three and0. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with the middle of the order hitter off, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. [Applause] Hit pretty well in the air out to center. Baro settles under it. Brings it in. Runner tags it second. He makes it to third. Good base running to move up with only one out. Good read there second base to move up to third. Now it’s a lot easier to get that run in with one away. And next to hit for Detroit, Spencer Torqulson [Applause] and that drops in for a strike. In this situation, the batter’s got to know what the pitcher’s trying to do to him, and that’s trying to get him to hit the ball on the ground, get two for one. You got to look for something up in the zone. At worst case scenario, you deliver the sacrifice fly. Swing and a miss. That’s strike two. Well, in this situation with a runner on first, less than two outs. Some say, “Hey, get the ground ball double play with two strikes.” Some people say get the strike out. I think you just execute your pitch, make the best pitch you possibly can, and let the result be whatever it’s going to be. Strike three went back to the sweeper and got the strike out. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. McKin Street in the box again. Takes the strike. That one fouled off. [Applause] Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Stays alive. Two on, two outs. Outside low. one and two count. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. And they’ll do it again [Music] [Applause] on the ground to third. slings to first. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now an 8-4 score. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get us started. Bottom five, Ernie Clement. [Applause] Monttero back to work. Fast for a strike. Activity in the bullpen for Detroit. Raphael Monttero getting loose for AJ Hinch. Finnegan warming up as well. [Applause] on the ground to the left. Bayz over to first. One up, one down. Now batting shorts stop. Andres Jimenez. Andres Jimenez will hit next. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. in there for strike one. And you played behind guys and they love having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind them and it finds its way through for a hit. So the one out hit turns the lineup over. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground ball. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Here’s George Springer. The one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump. And defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. and as well lots of pop in that batch. You combine the slug with really good defense. [Applause] That one ripped. Gone. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 104. That’s their fifth homer of the game. Man, they’re all getting into the action. It’s starting to feel like a home run derby up here. [Applause] No matter how this outing ends, that pitch is going to haunt him for a while. An O2 mistake. That’s supposed to be a pitch out of his own. He left it in the spot that the hitter could do some damage with and that’s exactly what he did. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Kaidder Monttero won’t go any further tonight. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. [Applause] Now pitching for new pitcher for the Tigers, Raphael Montero. Well, they need someone to stop the bleed and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging it. One out, base is empty. Here’s the left fielder, Nathan Lucas. And first off is fouled off. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] That’s down and in. A slider missed. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to operate it. [Applause] The one-1 is fouled off. Still only one out here in the inning. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Applause] Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. He keeps it down. It’s just so tough to put wood on. Glatty the next to hit takes ball one. Two out. Space is empty. [Applause] Bats in there and the count one and one. Ah, he doubled up on the off speed there. We talk about the power fast ball, but he’s working a little differently here. Monttero fires [Applause] off the plate inside and the count is even. Two and two. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in. Last half of inning number five. On the ground to short, and that one finds its way through. Oh, this has been a really nice game at the plate for him. He looks locked in. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And we’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Stepping in, Addison Barger. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. Guerrero leads off first with two down to the inning. And that’s him for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. swings and misses. The high heat too much on that one, but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now a 104 score back here at Rogers Center. And now the catcher comes up to him, Dylan Dingler. And that one fouled off. Clearly down in this ball game. And you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. [Applause] Gets a piece and stays alive. Hit on the ground to short. Jimenez zips it to first. Leadoff man retired in the sixth. Now batting center fielder Parker Meadows. Here’s the center fielder Parker Meadows. up and in. And that’s ball one. That’s a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. One down, base is empty. That misses and that’s ball three. [Music] And that is in there for a strike. I believe that’s the split fast ball for a strike and a foul ball. He stays alive. One out. Base is empty. Foul ball and it remains a full cow and that one lifted in the air center field. Baro has a beat on it, hauls it in and there’s two away. Up next for the Tigers shortstop Javier. Two down base is empty. Here’s Bayzing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays inside. Just missed. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. That’s in there. One ball, one strike. And that’s a fair ball. [Applause] Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Back to the top of the lineup. Carrie Carpenter up now for the Tigers. There’s the strike. [Applause] Two outs. Ripped on the ground to second. They get the force. That’s out number three. So, one hit is all they get. We go to the bottom half of inning number six and the 567 slots do up. It’s the Blue Jays 10 and the Tigers four. And we’re back. Bottom of the sixth inning. Here’s the Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. [Applause] That one misses. Ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Tommy Canley getting loose for AJ Hinch. [Applause] That clips the corner. [Applause] And that’s outside. Two and one. [Applause] That one back up the middle and it gets through. Man aboard on the leadoff single. clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. Just kept it simple. Played pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there’s just no one there to knock it down. Now the batter now Daltton Bar inside corner for a strike. It’s 0 and one. [Applause] Nobody out. Runner of first. [Music] Highfly ball out into left center field. Meadows sizing this one up. And there’s one away. Now batting the right fielder Anthony Santandere. So a man aboard. So up next for Toronto, Anthony Santandere. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Applause] squirts away a little bit. Kirk the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Check swing and he went at a count. Two and one. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Applause] cut on and miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. And now for the Jays, Ernie Clemen, third base. When you talk about elite defensive third base, this guy is at the top of the list. Just missed. This guy plays third base like he’s a shortstop and he welcomes the difficult play. can throw from so many different angles and makes really tough plays look very easy. Swing and a ball popped up. Squeezes it and the inning is over. Blue Jays held in check. They’re up comfortably though. It’s 104. [Applause] Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Justin Bul. Compared to some days, this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him. So, he should be fairly free and easy out there. Still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone. Glabber Torres up to hit. The designated hitter, Glabber Torres. [Applause] That one hammered center field going back makes the catch up against the wall. Really nice job to get your first down of the ball game. Next to hit Colt Heat R measures 6’2 in 27 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. [Applause] There’s a strike. Movement in the Blue Jays bullpen. Tommy Nance up and loosening in the pen. [Applause] And the next pitch is way outside. Base is empty. One away. You’re in the late stages of game five. Swing and a miss and a count. One and two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Two outs. Base is empty. Riley Green up now for the Tigers. [Applause] Late swing, fouled to the left. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in game five of this American League Division Series and it’s fouled away. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning. Tigers failed to make any noise and that is not what they needed. Down 104 now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Finnean. Kyle Finnean [Applause] digging in. Andre Jimenez for the Jays. Short stop Andre Jimenez. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one. [Applause] The shorts stop takes the ball. [Applause] That’s in there. Strike one. [Applause] Just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. Hard grounder into the outfield for a n. So now back to the top of the order. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Here’s the second baseman, George Springer. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] And ball one. Next offering upstairs. [Applause] swings through that one for strike two. Ruer at first with no outs here. [Applause] Springer swings through that one. It’s a strike out. One away. Nathan Lucas next up for the Blue Jays. [Applause] First pitch misses. [Applause] Just missed. [Applause] swing and a ground ball base hit right field. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Vlatty Jr. stepping to the dish now. There’s the strike. Runners at first and second with one gone here in the bottom of the seventh. [Applause] Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. O2 Cal both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking I want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. fights it off. He’ll see another [Applause] two on one out on the ground. Kick it cleanly. Still fires to first. The throw won’t get there in time and the defense comes away with nothing. Desated hitter Madison Barger. Next is the designated hitter, Addison Barker. [Applause] Fought off foul Fouled off left side. Jimenez on third. Lucas over at second. Guerrero at first. One gone. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. [Applause] Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Kyle Finn again out of the game and he leaves with the bases loaded. So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. [Applause] Now pitching new pitcher on now Tommy Kley. Well, no margin for error in terms of throwing strikes with the bases loaded. Just has to execute one pitch at a time to try to get out of this. So up next, Alejandro Kirk. He is at the top of the game in terms of defense at the catching spot [Applause] and there’s a foul ball. So they’re all loaded up with two outs [Applause] that misses the zone and now it’s even one and one. It’s so impressive because these guys have to do so much study and preparation for their pitchers, for opposing hitters, and really their number one job is to guide that staff through a ball game. And so when you also can turn it up offensively and be a force there, that is a win-win, every manager’s dream. [Applause] Two-2 now and a swing and a miss. And that will end the inning. Nicely done from the Tigers bullpen there. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Blue Jays 10 and the Tigers four. [Applause] Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Yariel Rodriguez. And he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Yariel Rodriguez. Spencer Torlson now. First baseman Spencer Torlson. [Applause] And the first offering is not close. Activity in the bullpen. A lefty up and throwing out there. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] That’s off the mark and it’s two and one. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Well, those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. [Applause] line drive and that’s a base hit to right. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Up next for the Tigers third baseman Zack McKinstry. And next up for the Tigers Zack McKinstry 0 for three in this one. just missed. Well, the laid off man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully, the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Late with the swing there. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Falling behind two and one. [Applause] swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. The Jays up big in this one and we’re in the top of the eighth. Now it’s three and two and ball four to a board. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Now, here’s the Detroit catcher, Dylan Dingler, 0 for three with two ground outs and a strike out. That one missed. [Applause] The one Tap foul at the plate. [Applause] Swang and a miss. Missed that by a mile. And it’s one and two. outside with a breaking ball. Swinging a drive deep right field and that’s a foul ball. No outs. Runners at first and second. [Applause] pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. and downstairs. [Applause] Ground ball right side. Could be two in plenty of time to first. So, it was a long battle at the plate, but they still managed to get the out. [Applause] Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Yariel Rodriguez won’t go any further and he’s on the hook for the runners at second and third. So looking for some help there. Back in a minute. Now pissing number 68 takes over on the mound. Bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So we’ll see how it works out. Two on with one out. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers. That’s a ball. tried to sweep her inside. Two and 0. [Music] [Applause] Hit in the air. Center field. Baro settles underneath it and makes the grab. Runner tags for home. Throw is offline and he scores. It’s now 10 to five. Up next for the Tigers shortstop Javier Bayz. The batter now, Javier Bayz. One for three. [Applause] That one laced to center in a base hit coming home. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. It’s 106 now. Batty right field. And up next for Detroit, Carrie Carpenter, one for four with a double. And that is downstairs. Ball one. [Applause] pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. [Applause] Bayz off of first with two away and a sweeper misses for a ball. [Applause] Good eye right there. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. swing a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. He nails one out to right. His second home run of the series. And they cut into the deficit. It’s 108. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Two outs, nobody on. Glabber Torres up now for the Tigers and first offering is fouled off. [Applause] next offering is fouled back. Looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. Next pitch misses. Now one and two. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Applause] And that one almost got him. [Applause] spoils that one and it remains two and two. No question about this one. It’s out of here. [Applause] They do it again. back-to- back homers. His second homer this series. It’s 109 and their fifth home run of the game. Some things in this sport are contagious, Boo. And right now for this team, clearly it’s the long ball. Cutter inside can be a bat breaker. You have to catch it out front to get the barrel to it. does a really good job recognizing it early, getting the bat head to it and hitting it out of the ballpark. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Number 68 will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming up. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching new arm out of the bullpen. Brendan Little. These are the spots where levers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So, two away with nobody on. And next to hit for Detroit, Colt Keith. And that’s off the outside edge. And that is ball one. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] looking to get the tying run on base. And that’s way high. And it’s two and one. [Applause] And strike two. Keeps the advant going with a foul ball. And that one in the air center field. Varo moving under it. makes the grab and that’s the third out. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working and this is now a 109 ball game. Back now in Toronto. Onto the bottom of the eighth. And now it’s going to be Dalton Vo. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Troy Melton getting ready to go. And a 10. And that one sliced foul. One-1 now. Swing and a miss. Looked off balance that time. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Lined into right. Lays out and makes the play. Hitter’s got a broken heart on that one. It had base hit written all over it. Maybe extra bases. Great diving catch for the upset. [Applause] Anthony Santandere next up for the Blue Jays. And first offering is fouled off. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. That’s out number two. Now that third baseman Ernie Clement Ernie Clement next up for the Blue Jays [Applause] edge of the zone call the strike 41. Well at bat can be a little bit of a dance strike one here but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. [Applause] Ground ball toolson. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Three up, three down that time. We’re on to the ninth now in game five. It’s the Blue Jays 10 and the Tigers nine. [Applause] Now this comes out trying to close it out. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure. This one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save for the Tigers. One round game. Now here’s the Tigers cleanup hitter Riley Green. And that one fouled off. Off the mark there. One and one. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Next pitch is downstairs. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. And that’s down and away. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. Spencer Torqulson in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And the tying run is on base. Oh, he tried to middle right there and just missed his spot. Didn’t offer it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. No outs, runner at first. And next up for the Tigers, Spencer Torqulson. That misses the zone and it’s one to know. Pure base runner. You got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in the scoring position. That misses and the count is two and0. Well played umpires. Try to tighten things up a little bit. Just missed. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point of the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. And there’s the automatic. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never had a chance. All four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass. So the tying run in scoring position. Now McKinstry digs in now. [Applause] Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Swings through the fast ball up in the zone. threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. So, the tying run at second. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Two and two. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Dylan Dingler in the OD circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. And they’re all loaded up. Pretty much the last thing you want from your bullpen arms are free passes, especially in spots like this. Make the team earn their way off. Dylan Dingler the next to hit. Golden opportunity right here. [Applause] Just missed. Lots of anxious fans in the ballpark right now. You can feel [Applause] one-run game here in the top of the ninth. Next offering is in for a strike. He is going to sleep well tonight if his team can come through with the win. the other way. Drops into the glove. Runners tagging for second and third. The throws offline. He’s saved. All tied up. 10 apiece. Good piece of head right there. He’s thinking off the bat that’s getting down for extra bases. But nice job of the outfielder running it down, making the catch. Still comes away with the sack fly though. RBI. Here comes the manager out of the Blue Jays dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Jeff Hoffman is done and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. [Applause] Now pitching. New pitcher now for the Jays, Braden Fischer. [Applause] And up next for Detroit, Parker Meadows. Here’s the pitch. It’s a double steel. It’s a pitch out at the plate. He’s out trying to steal home. breaking ball inside and it’s one and one. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to in the air center field squeezes it and that’s the third out. So, a ninth inning comeback here and this game has been flipped on its head. We’re all even at 10 apiece. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Leading off Andres Jimenez. Canley back to work on the inside corner for a strike. Tigers bullpen with some action. Will vest getting loose for AJ Hinch. Now the one that’s hard hit on the line. Brings it in. One away. Great swing of the bat right there trying to get on as that go ahead run. He just wasn’t able to find a hole. Springer. George Springer next up for the Blue Jays. Well, one swing is a lot easier than getting two or three hits to win this ball game. You better believe he’s going to be all in to hit the ball over the fence somewhere. Oh, this one’s blasted high. It’s on it way out of here. Ball game. Another homer. And the Blue Jays walk it off for the win. [Applause] the postseason. There’s so much excitement, so much energy, everyone hanging on every single pitch. To have a walk-off win under these circumstances, these people have gone crazy. What a nice win. But you got to turn the page quickly to come back for the next game. [Applause] Close one here today in your final 11. [Applause] Heat. Heat. [Applause]
