I like the beep on the first part better. Here’s what you don’t do. You don’t apologize for a win. But I’ll tell you one thing. It’s a lot better to say that was a little dicey at the end when you get the two points than if they didn’t get the two points. Stars beat the Jets. Let’s talk about it. Well, guys, only 81 more to go here in the regular season, but a win is a win. And as great as that start of the third looked, and as bad as the end of the third looked, it’s a lot easier when Glenn Gulson got his second first win as Dallas Star’s head coach. I think I figured out the key just now. I found some hidden candy upstairs in the studio in second intermission and it went downhill. Reese’s Reese’s Eggs and York Pepper Patties fired him over to to the boys here. Luds opened up the Reese’s bag like a child and the stars scored three goals in 2 minutes and 22. I didn’t know there was a security or a paddle lock. By the time you guys had stopped eating, everything went to hell. What happened to that Reese’s bag? It looked like it was legit. It looked like a like a grenade went off. It’s been in there since the 80s. So, it’s a little tough getting apart. Sam went over to the counter by our lounge at the end of the game and looks and he said there’s just a bunch of Reese’s peanut butter cups individually wrapped and the bag that they came in was just flat tattered just like completely disheveled. So Glenn Gullison had 64 wins in 130 regular season games for the Dallas Stars. Five point uh.527 point percentage. So he gets his 65th but is second first. That’s that’s the good part. There will be plenty of teachable moments, Luds, is we have the good, the bad, and the ugly tonight. Nothing easy about it, right? And but Gully kind of said it in some of the stuff in the beginning of the show. We’ve been saying it. This is game one. If you watched any of the games leading up to, you know, the last couple nights, nothing’s pretty right now. It never it never is in the beginning of the year. You want it to be as perfect as you can. And um, you know, and he was moving things around. You know, we thought things were going good in the first period. Next thing you know, lines are getting shuffled up a little bit, which is going to be part of the process. And I think he’s uh I think he settled in. Seemed like halfway through the game, and then right when you think he had it all where you want it, the bottom falls out for a little bit. And uh yeah, I I the first thing I thought of is the guys took their foot off the gas and they were going to they were going to coast coast that one to the end. Was it cuz we’ll break down the the whole thing and everything, but the way it felt, it wasn’t like it was just they were playing on their heels and they were just taking on water. It was just mistakes. How different is that from just taking your foot off the gas and not playing as much? Well, you you think you can kind of coached out and you kind of get through, but you forget that there’s a team over there that finished first overall in the league and there’s a little pride in there and and they’re missing some guys and you know and again they they get their steam there at home. They get a goal, a little momentum, then another goal, then another goal and then next, you know, um we’re walking back up there and plugging our computers in. uh you know, but again, I I you know, you’re going to it it’s it’s going to be a little bit more forgiving because you end up getting the two points, right? So, there’s some of these things that uh and you only have 24 hours and you’re going to get ready for the next game. So, couple days from now, you got to play again. So, the good news is they’re going to travel and um they won’t be able to be too hard on them. You’ll sit down, you’ll look at the video and and see where all the little boooos were. Okay. So, before we break it all down, the takeaways, yes, it’s better to try to do the teachable moments after a win because you feel better about yourselves. And I don’t think anybody’s going to walk out of the first week of the regular season go, “We’ve got it all figured out.” Even the two-time defending Stanley Cup champs, Florida Panthers, are going to have issues. But when they they talk so much about you can’t win a playoff spot in the first month of the season or first two months, but boy, you can really hinder your chances getting to points even if it’s not pretty or was pretty and then it wasn’t. That that is still a very important thing. Well, it’s easier to work on your game when you’re winning games, right? I mean, otherwise they just it kind of builds up on you. I Renon was excellent tonight. I mean, it’s nice to see I I thought Wyatt played a good game. A lot of guys had good games. There was one guy in particular, I think, that we feel wasn’t up to par. And I had said coming down the steps, I’m thinking, Billy Garren right now is scratching his head who’s going to be the general manager of Team USA going, “Uh, those are my two goalies right now. This might not be the game.” And I think there were like nine goals in that game. Suddenly, Jeremy Swayman might be back in the conversation again because he had a nice win for Boston the other night. Okay. So, good, bad, and ugly. The good is they found offense and they scored and it was spread around. We’re going to go into the the goal by goal. We’ll do the whole recap. Miko Ransen looks like money very well spent. He looked like mid-season form, didn’t he? He looked like he did in the playoffs last year in the first two rounds. Dominate. I mean, he kind of picked picked up right where them first two rounds quit. So, uh, yeah, he I mean he he was the bull. Uh, but you know, when that line started, it was Sam Steel on that left when we saw that change a little bit later. And when it did go back to Romo, you look at the at the end of it when Robo and Ratin and Hence were together, they had 18 combined shots because they look dangerous. That’s that’s pretty decent for for a line to come out of there. You know, it means there you’re spending a lot more time at that end you are the if you have those and that you know, we’re going to go through that goal the first one where Steel makes a great couple of plays to help set up the first he he did he was the worker be and Blackwell did too and they did what they were expected to do on their lines. They they were as you said they were the worker guys. They were in there. They’re digging around. They’re going to the front of the net. They’re they’re causing some some chaos and some havoc so the skilled guys can do their thing. So the good was Ranton and looked great. The offense, especially in the early part of the third period, looked very, very dangerous. Duchain and Sean looked like they had missed a beat, which they haven’t. And then the bad was up by four. They played loose, ugly. There were some defensive zone coverage issues. And to me, the ugly was your third period goalending. Yeah. Well, I mean, there were a couple other saves that Jake even made tonight that didn’t look clean, you know, that not that he was guessing or, you know, he he just didn’t look like mid-season. Jake, what did he get? One game only. I know he got the last game. Did he get how much did he play? He played games or did he only play a couple? Yeah. Either he should have played one or he should have played three. Yeah. You know, it’s funny with Jake when you watch. But hey, you know what? Down in the book is a win. Yeah. Right. For sure. and his was it 150th win was a winner game tonight. He was the fastest to to 150 wins, right? Would he have 150 wins already? I don’t know. You’re the one that told us. I’m looking I’m looking at it. I just read it twice. What did you say? Jake reaches the 150 win mark faster than any other American goalie. I just want to make sure I didn’t say that incorrectly. 150th regular season win in his 2502nd game played time. fastest in American goalie history. But they’ve been very successful with that. Yes. But the key that I was saying is when you’re watching Jake play, especially when you’re contrasting it with Casey to Smith, Jake’s a big positional goalie. He’s not going to be scrambling. He doesn’t have to move his body up and down a lot. He doesn’t have to get go post to post as quickly because of his size. So, when he’s not on his game, it’s it’s actually more obvious because Casey, he could be scrambling, but he could be breeding the play and doing what he needs to do. With Jake, it’s pretty obvious when he’s not playing to his level. It’s when he’s doing that little bit of scrambling or like the goal uh I think it was Baron’s breakaway goal. He’s just not reading the play well and he’s and it’s one thing to get scored on, but the goals he got scored on most of the time he was actually pushing himself out of position and not reading the play right. So, it’s early. I’m sure he’ll bounce right back on on Saturday, but that’s that’s something some of the rebound control too. And I I thought even said to you guys, I thought there was one a shot I don’t know what period it was. You know them shots that come in, you kind of want to you get it with the blocker, but you want to catch it, you know, and keep control of it. It looked like I mean, he got the blocker on it, but but it looked like he kind of whiffed looked like he was fighting it a little bit. Well, yeah. I don’t Whatever Whatever it is, GM Ben in the chat said, “Tonight’s super chat theme. What travel issues will Sam have on his way to Denver.” Not even a super chat, just a funny line. Get your super chats in because we’re going to get to that in segment three tonight. All right, let’s go through this. We will obviously carry this over into our next segment, but let’s start at the beginning where we always do. Luds, I know you have a nice breakdown planned for this. Mo Rantin scores his first goal of the season because of course he did because Luds called it. Oh, that’s right. I did. Oh, I got I got Ryan ready for the the clips. In our pregame show tonight, I asked you guys about who was going to score the first goal of the season. What do you think Lud said? You know who scores the first Stars goal tonight? Oh boy. First of the season for the Dallas Stars. Who Who you gonna pick? They’ve been through the chat. I asked him. 91. You’re saying Sean. Buds. I’m going money Brandon. I like that too. And you were right. Couldn’t we just cut to me saying that instead all the jabber before that? Talk to your producer. Wow. He’s right and he’s already tripping. Let’s get to the goal. Okay. So, let’s get to this goal. The work is done though by number 18 on this goal. And Sam Steel had a lot to do with it. And and again, he did exactly what Gully wanted him to do. And you can see right off the bat, Steel off the face off, where does he go? He goes right to the front of the net. He stays at the front of the net. He stays in the blue paint. And then actually, he picks the puck up in the corner now that he goes from there. And what he does here is he brings his player who’s on him far enough that he loses him and it’s that tight little turn back. But then I think where it start is a nice backhand. This we’ve seen Steel do this before. Makes a nice backhand pass to the front of the net. Hence just kind of redirects it. And what does the big boy do? Look at he plants himself right on top the crease and it it’s an empty net. But again to me none of that happens without Steel being the guy that does all the work. uses his speed, the little curl back, the nice backhand pass, and I and I think it was nice because I think we’ve seen um we see hints at times try to make an extra pass. I like that he put it on net right away. It’s early in the game, you know, so you put it on net right away and rant and parked right there. Randon is not going to get much of an easier goal and once he’s there, you’re not going to move. I was going to say you can’t move him. Dylan Samberg, I think was was that Samberg, the defenseman that was playing without a stick on that play? No, he didn’t play tonight. No, not Samberg. I’m sorry. Was it Dlo? Remember he was one of the guys. Yes, he was injured. I meant I meant Dlo. I I don’t know if it was Dlo or it might have been You know what? It might have been Hayden Flurry because he doesn’t have a stick and he’s flailing all over the place. Meanwhile, even if he went to Ranson, I don’t know if he pushes him out. No, he wouldn’t. Randon had position. I mean, anything that came out in front of the net and you could see hella buck buck. Buck wasn’t even around. Well, that made it one- nothing stars. However, three minutes later, Kyle Connor would answer back. And we’re going to talk about Kyle Connor a lot tonight because he had a hat-tick in a losing effort. He did first two goals, less guys that have scored signed $12 million contract extensions. Although this year Connor still only making 7.1 million. So he’s making sign substantially less this year than Miko Rans. Well, Chevy is sitting up there. Chev day off sitting up there going, “Yeah, I got a bargain.” And he did get a bargain. I mean at 12 million for the guy that scores 30 30 to 40 goals every year. He got a great great deal and it is Conor who actually starts out scoring for Winnipeg and there were some to me there’s this is what Gully’s going to break down. He’s going to break things like this down. There’s a little coverage thing. You can see where Connor comes in here through the middle of the ice and all of a sudden what we have is we have hints and we have Seal who had a good game tonight but they’re going away from the net and then Bishop kind of lets Connor go too. He let I I don’t know what was going on to be honest with you. So what happens is the puck goes down to the goal line here. Right here they look good. Yeah. Right here. But but everybody’s staring at the puck and you can already see Hint is Do we not have a circle around Hint there? No, we didn’t put a little thing around Hint, do we? He’s just bugging out, isn’t he? I know. You mean Ryan? No, I’m talking. I’m waiting for him to hit the button over there. Yep. Um can we go to the next one here? Ryan, what’s the next clip on this thing? Or isn’t there one? Are we just stuck on this screen right here? Are his is his headset on? I don’t think he’s listening to us. Ryan Ryan’s listening to music. Ryan’s over there listening to Drake’s moving. It’s all sitting there. We got a still shot. Can we mention our producers’s name one more time right now? Everybody knows. Is it Ryan Waters? Something like that. Waters. Ryan Waters. That’s Eagle One over there, aka the Winnebago. Well, well, anyway, there it is. Okay, here we go. There we go. There we go. Now we got it. That’s what I’m talking about. Well, now there’s probably nobody watching. Okay, now we’re going through them like rapid. So, okay. So, it’s like catching up for all the button. He was just spamming the button. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. And now it’s following through. Okay. So, if you’re following along, goodbye. We lost ls here. Okay, Ryan for any of our audio listeners. The arrow that you if you can catch up to the arrows right now. This arrow here shows where hints should have gone again. Centermen are working down low with the defenseman now, but he decides to turn up. He turns up the middle of the ice. And then on the next shot, you’re going to end up seeing if we get to the next shot, you’re going to see, now look at this over here. So all of a sudden, Steel and Hins are standing here. And here’s a guy that’s making the $12 million starting next year all alone in front of the net. This is the one where I thought Jake one in the next the next clip here. This pass goes right through the blue paint. I thought that as a goalender, and this would be a good question for Sean when he’s in his BH or whatever the hell that called. Um, but I thought you can play make a play on this puck when it comes through the blue paint, but he doesn’t. He gets over, Connor gets it. He gets one off and he collects his uh right right here. This is where I thought his stick could have been in there, but then Connor gets it and then he gathers it again and he puts it in an empty net. You know, I will I will say Jake, if you go and watch uh clips of Jake over there, we got them two shots there. Now, those one of those two guys would have been back there. He doesn’t use his stick very much. Yeah. The only time he really does is when it’s on his left shoulder and he’ll sometimes open the blade up to poke it, but he he really doesn’t. He He’s more focused, which is funny because he’s such a big goalie that he probably can Yeah. keep his stick out there, but just something that he doesn’t often do. By the way, our GM Ben is trying to suggest that we should call Ryan the Vodderus, as in like the mudus. And that just doesn’t even rhyme. Like, it makes no sense. Who that man? Go back to sleep. Just go back to bed. All right, up next we’re gonna break more down here on the DLS Stars postgame show after a win. That’s you, Sam. Panic. Panic. Oh, I’m not ready at all. I’m not ready at all. Are we good now? I’m ready. All right. always prepared. I love it. Let us now get to the next goal because one of the things we talked about all off seasonason and going into training camp was what are we going to see from Niels Lungquist? Can he step up in this season coming back from a shoulder injury, new coach, new lease on life or at least a new leash to to be allowed to try to show his stuff and he scores on the Stars first period. Second goal of the period makes it two to one. Ludsy, I know you’re gonna break this down. This is great for him, but this also highlights Miko Rantin’s dazzling skill set. Yeah, but you know, just for Niels, he’s Gully’s given him an opportunity and he stayed with them in that spot. He’s kept him there with Thomas and he’s taken advantage of it. And I I thought he was great tonight. I think there were a couple speed bumps in the in the preseason, but you know, he had a goal and assist tonight. He was a plus three. made all the right plays. Th this one here again starts with Randon and we got a picture of Ranton here. Right there, but watch the next clip. If you can go back one more, Ryan, what he what he did? Yeah, there. I like that. Reverse. So, what Ranton’s doing? Go back one more. We got one more prior to this. When he enters the zone. Okay. Now, when he Did he say no? Did he actually tell me no? I think he I think he Okay, never mind then. But when when Randon enters the zone, he comes in and what he does right here is he puts the brakes on. And what he does is he puts the brakes on. He gives him that little back back bounce back and he creates some space for himself that allows him to get down into the corner here. And then he makes a perfect pass to Lungquist. And this is exactly what they’re looking for him to do in the offensive zone. Jump into the play. Wait, look at all the puck watching for the uh Jets in this one. Who is this in the slot? Is that Ro taking two guys to him? Well, no, they’re all first rope, but look at these all five jets are looking at the puck. So, there’s a seam here, the passing lane that goes to Lquist and then what happens is Lquist gathers the puck and then and then right in front of him is Pearson. And so, Pearson goes down to try to block it. Niels just hesitates for a second and he actually shoots it behind him. He shoots it over his back, so to speak. And now you got the goalender. Hella Buck Buck Buck can’t pick up that puck as it goes past Tanner’s back. Look at look at look at Hellabuk’s head. He can’t see it. By the time he sticks his arm out there, it’s already in the net. So, great play obviously by Ratin, but then the great shot by by Niels jumping into the play in that high slot. That’s the that’s that quiet area. You don’t get in there too soon and there’s generally a pocket in there somewhere. Niels found it. And I got to say, the new arrows, the circle drawings, really nice little ads to the breakdown feature. Well, if we could if we get it to work, right, it’ll be even better. Hey, it’s only game one. I I I swear his headset’s not on. As always, as as funny as it is, I know it’s only one game, but tell me that’s not exactly what we need to steal from you. He’s That’s him. It’s okay if he’s average defensively. He needs to bring offense otherwise they have options they can do. And he got he got 17 minutes tonight. 16 17. But the reason he gets those minutes isn’t because of that that they know he can do and now he’s got the confidence to jump up there. It’s what he does at the other end of the ring. The way he plays in front of his own net, what he does in the corners. I saw him tonight. He got the puck on his stick below the goal line in his own zone. Found the first guy and moved the puck. He was plus three tonight and a night where there were nine goals scored plus three. That’s good. I know. I’m just reiterating. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Okay, Ryan, let’s go to the second period. Not you, him. Chance, chance, chance, chance, chance, chance. No goals. But boy, Luds, you talked about in the pregame show, this is going to be wide open. It’s not going to be really tight defensively and there’s going to be some breakdowns that lead to some gradea a chances and there were a whole bunch for both teams in that second period. Yeah, it it it got loose and and again you can kind of understand it from Dallas’s standpoint when they’re getting some goals and things are going their way. I looked up at the clock one point they were out shooting them by 10 15 shots. So they were controlling the game and territorially they were controlling it. And I think it’s it’s kind of natural at times to to kind of get away from what you’re supposed to be doing in all three zones. And it’s a little easier getting up and down the ice, you know, too easy probably sometimes, and you forget what you got to do it the other way, which ultimately came to bite them later in the third period. What do you think about that fouron-ree power play in the second period where they had some chances, couple of really good ones, but they didn’t score. I said it to you, fouron threes. Everybody gets all giddy about a fouron-ree. there’s a lot more ice and and so you start to gravitate to the outside of the ice and when there’s more ice you start finding passing lanes on the on the exterior of the ice and you end up moving it around and what Dallas did when it’s a five on three or four on three generally the three guys that are killing the penalty are going to be very tight in that that slot area. So there’s kind of a cardinal rule, not all the time, not for the greatest great players, but you don’t go through the triangle because there’s sticks in there, there’s bodies, and they tried to go through there a couple two, three times, it didn’t work out, and then they got to gather the puck again, then they move it around the outside. So they actually started to kill their own power play. Well, that’s going to come rearing its ugly head back in the third period as well. We talk about a certain play by Morgan Baron. They get the five on three because Mo Ranton drew a penalty, which the Jets didn’t like. Then on the ensuing power play seconds later, they get an obvious penalty because they get a stick into the base of the skate of Branson and he goes down five on three. He gets a really good catch and shoot. I thought they were forcing it a little bit, but he at least got one on net. They go to the second intermission. Five on three to start the third period. They don’t score on that, but they do score on the five on four. And this sparks a twogoal flurry in 34 seconds as Jason Robertson gets his first goal of the season. Yeah. And Robo put it away, right? And do we got this one, Ryan? Um, well, this is the this is the B. This is just one little thing I want to show again. This is Randon on the bottom of the screen here. And he you can see he’s got the puck here, head always on a swivel. What does he see? He sees Matt Duchain jump off the bench and start coming through the middle of the ice. And then what he does is he gets it up and he turns towards the wall and he gives Duchaine time to skate through the middle of the ice and then he just does this little spinama. There’s where he spots him and right here on his backand this whole time he keeps an eye on him and he puts it right on the tape. He puts it on the tape and it goes off. Anyway, this doesn’t really lead to anything but I it was the things that Ranton was doing throughout the game. You could tell he was on it. How about his physical play before we get to the goal that the cross check and everything else. I love that side of Miko ran in by the way in the you said it didn’t lead anything. Sean had a great a chance off that rush cuz Duchain catches it onehanded like you showed. Gets in the zone, sends Sean. Sean goes right to the net. Hellbuck makes a nice save. That was one of his five shots father had tonight. Later on, didn’t he? He would get a tap and goal later, which we’ll talk about, but he really liked the physicality from Ranch. Yeah, I just think he he brings so much of that and this team wants that. So, if he’s free to do that, I mean, maybe not taking penalties as he did, but that play where he just cross checks Pian and then throws the mess off into the boards, that’s that’s hockey once in a while, and that that makes you harder to play against, so I’m all for that. All right, Leds. Now, the Robertson goal is the breakdown from the one we were talking about, but here’s what it looks like. So, what what again, this is it’s a no-brainer, right? And this is the end of it. So, I just I just wanted to show this is the passing lane that’s here. But again, I we try to tell kids all the time, know what you’re going to do and know where your outlets are before you get the puck. This is Ratin obviously staring out at the point. The puck’s moving across. But then the next thing he does, he takes a quick look over to his right. Now he knows exactly where Robo is. Now the puck comes back. Puck comes down to the wall, back down to down to Ratin. And we stay in the same spot and he doesn’t have to do anything but receive it. Move it right straight to the front of the net. And then you saw on the first shot where Robo finishes it off. So again, heady play by Raton and you wa if you sit there and you watch Ratin through the course of the game and when he doesn’t have the puck, he’s not staring at who has the puck. He’s surveying everything else that’s going on around him. So he already knows where he’s going to go, where his time is, and who’s coming at him before he even gets that. That was before he gets the Le Randell Rantin’s third point. Le Rondell. So he had the goal, the first goal, he set up Lungquist goal, then he sets this one up, a power play goal for Robo. And Sam, you actually saw it because I initially thought he just deflected it in. It’s actually Robo’s uh second effort that goes in the net. Yeah. Puts it right upstairs. That’s that’s the the goal scoring. And that’s Robertson’s uh we forget that he used to do all those drills. He still does them, but he specifically with Scott Wedgwood used to do all those intight shots. Wyatt Johnson started to do it more at practice. That pays off because finishing against big Vzna caliber Vzna winning goalies is very hard. Robo puts it right upstairs. The That’s it for the goal breakdowns with video because then it became chaos. Star scored 34 seconds later. Tyler Sean from Duchain and Harley. This was look this was another this was a Ranton kind of a play but it was actually Matt D. It was Harley that came in. I mean it was from Duchain. Duchain made that kind of a kind of play. Yeah. I made a spin around pass. Put it right on the tape of Sean. So these guys are Yeah. Little tap. Didn’t have to do anything. Just redirected in that. Yep. So it was nice play by Duchain. Duchain and Sean. It’s clearly a pair. We’ve seen it for years now. It worked since Duchain’s been here. Right. Instant. This is his third year in Dallas and he and Tyler Sean. When they’re together and healthy, they are a menace. And you should not mess with those two. You should keep them. And you just have to find who could play. And they kind of mixed it up a little bit in the third period because they put Robertson back up with hints and ransom and it looked like it should a first line. And you know, is it Steel? Is it Ritz Govian? Is it Blackwell? Who’s going to be that guy right now? I think Steel is the next best player. I think you’re right. To play with those guys. Being left-handed helps. I mean, if you’re gonna put Blackwell up there, he plays on his offside. So, I I think when Steel’s up there, Steel adds a little bite that those two don’t have. And I I don’t mean from a you know not like not not like the dude in Washington. There’s some guys I could name. He’s not he’s not that kind of guy, but not the Tom Wilson type. No, he play he plays. He uses his energy. He’s he’s not afraid to get in there. He goes into the front of the net and then the corners. He’s always digging around. He’s like that fly that’s buzzing around your head all the time. He’s just he’s annoying. And so he’s a net. Yeah, he he is. And so but but that’s what they need because everybody gets focused on him and then you know those other two guys kind of do their work. But again, as we showed tonight, he can make some plays when he gets down low. And he’s got some He’s got some skill. He’s very good on his back end. He’s underrated on his back end, I think. We have four more goals to talk about, then your super chats. Jason Sam just got one as one of the randos. That’s the funniest thing. So what does that mean? I get a badge. That means that you not only have a badge, but now you get unlocked emojis. No, it says Oh, it does on yours. Look, it says Sam Nestler. Oh, and why didn’t you use one of those emojis? Well, I asked Luds about this goal. So, Luds, Nate Bastian gets a grade a chance. Then Sean is wide open on a pass from Wyatt. Another that duo was looking good. Maybe you put Wyatt Johnson because they did that a couple of times in the third period. Wyatt playing with Duchine and Sean. They had some interesting connections. Do you think the coaches Gully the head coach will go back and sort of kind of look in the mirror and go wonder if we were tinking around a little too much too much overthinking and trying different things. I mean I I don’t know. I mean I but I if there’s a time of the year to do it it’s now. And if you’re going to do it, do it with a three four goal lead. Um maybe not. But but I’m just saying like I just wonder if they’re like, “Well, you know, let’s try this now. Maybe this is a good time to try that.” So like passes through the No, I’m talking about people a four on three. Changing interchanging players and popping players here. Let’s try lines over and over. I’m kind of like if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. You know what I’d like to have seen them change during this game is Thomas Harley. We’ll get to that on the power play. Hold on. Because Wyatt, we’re going to have to get a Can we bring the spotter spotter button back? I mean, he’s in Boston now, but we could always call him back in. Um, so Luds, Wyatt scores from the high slot with Sig screening in front, and it’s five to one. And this is just 323 into the third period. They scored three times. Who gave him that pass? Was it uh was it number five? Oh, it was Niels. That’s right. Who gave him the pass from Harley? Harley got an assist on that one, too. Moved it over to Yeah, he moved over to Nils and Nils gave him a perfect pass. And then Wyatt again used it one of the jets for a screen. Just got got around to his right just let it go. Got it up on net and actually everybody or a couple guys kind of celebrated and he had to get past the player and he went, “Oh, it went in the net.” So again, good things happen. You get pucks to the net. Harley once again showing his skating and ability to kind of tight turn up there. Tight turn hold play a lot of speed and he split two jets with that pass to to Wyatt. You you talked about that pass. He he just found a seam from the the blue line to like the left circle where Wyatt was there in sign. It was almost like quarterback throwing to a a soft spot in his own. That wasn’t a a little split. No, it was a C. Yes. Yeah. There was a It was wide open right down the middle of the ice. So, it’s five to one. It’s a route, right? This game’s over. 3 minutes into the third. The Jets look awful. Stars get another power play. You’re thinking, “Oh boy, they’re just going to go out there and have fun.” Well, it started to turn around at the halfway point of the period because Morgan Baron scored a short-handed goal unassisted at 953. Led, you were talking earlier because this actually was a It was five on four. There was a part where I’m trying to think now. It was five on three. It was I thought it was five on four. It was until then Rovian came out of the box. Okay. So, yeah, I was right. So, it was Rscoian and Shifley got matching slashing miners and then Morrisy. So, it was four on three and then he came out of the box. You were talking about what not to do in the triangle at four on three and this exact thing happened on this power play. Yeah. It’s just guys trying to squeeze pucks where they generally aren’t going to give you that space because it’s the one thing you take away is the middle of the ice when you’re trying to kill penalty and you only got three players. So, and and you always think that. So, there’s two problems that come into play when it’s a four on three and five on three. a lot of ice, a lot of things on the perimeter and you end up going from the top down to the wall, back up to the top, down to the other wall. Then it goes down to the goal line, then it comes back and all of a sudden as penalty killers, you’re going, “This is perfect. They’re keeping on the perimeter. We’re knocking time off the clock.” And then they don’t see anything because everything’s taken away. Now they try to throw one through the seam. They try to throw one through that that that group of three. Their sticks are all in the lanes. Their feet are in the lane. Puck generally gets knocked down and gets sent down the ice this time. Yeah, good kind of something. Good back check. didn’t get from Ranton, but didn’t get a save. No. And that’s the that’s the thing here with with Jake on this one. Ranton does a great job backing and harassing Baron. Rich Kovian comes out of the box and gets a check on him. I think those two players being all over Baron has Jake thinking the only thing he can do is here is chunk a backhand on me. I don’t forehand whatever he was on and Jake comes telescoping way out and doesn’t have any sort of uh lateral movement. He’s just stuck in his spot. So, I think he thinks this is going to be a shot and if he brings it to the backhand, Brandon is going to stop him. And it didn’t work out that way. So, Morgan Baron scores to make it five to2. And then Kyle Connor has a two-on-one rush short-handed and it’s looking it’s same power play. It’s five five on four. And Jake makes the save. Rebound gets fumbled behind the net by uh Shely. Doesn’t really get a good chance. Stars get a couple looks, hints Johnston, and then they get another rush from Kyle Connor, and he scores a short-handed goal on his own rebound. And it’s five to three. And you would have thought, LSDs, that it was a tie hockey game. He gets the second short-handed goal in just over a minute and 10 seconds. His second of the game. Shifley and Dlo the assist. It’s five to three. But we went from route to nervy, and it would continue after that. Well, you’re you’re on the bench and the coaches are on the bench, too, and they’re going, “Whoa.” Like, look, you know, everything just caved in in the last few minutes. So, yeah. And you’re under it and then and you’re in a building where, you know, they’re known to be a a rockous crowd and now all of a sudden you feel like everything’s caving in on you. Then that was 11:09 into the third period. So, you still have nine minutes to go and the game is a 53 Stars lead. Almost six minutes later, Kyle Connor scores again. First of all, Shifley had a point blank chance at the right post. Jake did make that save, but then you had Connor hatt-trick after Mero blew a tire and fell down. And that was one of those where great shot, but maybe need your best goalie to make that save. Better to happen in game one than in game 83 or 89 or 92. So, this will be forgotten about in in a few days. So, two things or three things we want to talk about. One, Thomas Harley and Miro Hastin and power play quarterback. Sam, you were desperate to talk about Sam. They’re tired of listening to me. You So, you tell them. Well, they’re tired of listening to me say this, too. I said it all last season, but I I’m going to go with a diff argument instead of just saying Harley should be power play one because they’re they’re going to rotate. As I said, the one specific time that I think Harley should always be on the quarterback on the power top power play is if they are five on three or four on three. That is where you have more open ice. You’re kind of starting to slough in and create more uh you know pushing the penalty killers back. Harley’s a shooter. He’s a dual threat. He can hold a defender, look like he’s going to shoot and make a good pass or he can hold a defender, look him off and shoot. Hayeskin’s a great player, elite defenseman, but nine times out of 10, if not 9.9 out of 10, Hayeskin’s making that pass. And we saw four on threes and five on threes, I think in the second period where it was all chaos where they just passed the puck around for two minutes straight. And that’s where Mero’s on the ice and he just doesn’t have that little bit of urgency to get the puck to the net. I think Thomas Harley brings more. So, that’s my argument on that. I don’t even know. I I He doesn’t have a shoot first mentality. Not at all. And here’s how you fix it for me is say say they’re out there and it’s 20 30 seconds and everything that you just said it gets moved around gets moved around nothing gets to the net. If there’s a whistle take muro off put Thomas on same unit same leave those four guys there and what’ll happen is we know what Harley’s going to do. Harley’s going to get it and when he sees a lane he takes a shot. Well, the next time and if Mero’s sitting there, Mero’s a smart guy. And but but again, I think in the same time the coaches can ask him, Mirror, we want you to be more of a shooter this year or when you see it, let let’s get it up there. Because what’s happening now is when Harley’s out there, the guys that are on the ice with them will gravitate to the net. Yep. When Mero’s out there, they stay out here because they’re expecting him to pass. Well, it’s more dangerous when pucks going to the net is what I believe. But but again, if they’re going to keep trotting Mirror out there, then they have faith in what he’s doing because otherwise it’s not like they’re not going to ask Mir, we want you to shoot more. I I mean, they would ask him and if he’s not doing it that they would probably, you know, put Thomas out there. So, I I guess they’re okay with it. So, I said three things. That was one. The other two, and I’ll do one really quickly. That goal came with 303 left. the Stars who still had to deal with power play time because after that Harley got called for puck over the glass. What was it? Was that a 4 seconds? So I delay over here. Okay. So I didn’t see what everybody was is it where it went out or where like what was the confusion with everybody? He was at center ice and as the puck was out of midair, he was he backing into his own zone. He’s literally a foot or two inside the blue line and he’s trying to bat a puck and it goes up and out of play. So technically rule he’s in his Dzone and he knocks it out of play. So what was all the confusion about? The Stars use their timeout. I think they use their timeout so that Neil Graham and their video coaches could communicate a little longer, take another look and decide whether they wanted to challenge. But what were they going to challenge if he was two feet inside his own blue line? What were they thinking? I’m sure they were looking at trying to see if that maybe he wasn’t or was that puck deflected or you know whatever it was. I saw last thing I remember seeing is Gully was talking to one of the referees trying to get a Yeah, there was a conversation that they were having challenge. They were not challenged, but they were definitely I don’t think they like the determination of the rule. Would that be a penalty? What? Batting the puck out of midair out of play. Like it’s one thing if you shoot it in your zone. Okay. I’m just curious cuz right cuz the reason the rules do anybody can under possession flip it into the crowd when you when you knock a puck out of it was literally a dump in and he swats at it. Do you know if that was legal? How many guys would just be doing one of these thing? Pick it up and bat it out. That’s true. That’s Well, it’s the same thing what you’re saying. If he bats it out, I mean, I guess that should be trying that referee’s discretion. Yeah. Okay. So, aside from that, my third thing was kudos to the Stars for locking down the final three minutes because even on another penalty kill and the six on five at the very end, they didn’t face a really dangerous chance. There was one for Nyquis on the power play. Jake made the save. It was six on four, by the way, at that point. Then they come out of the box in the last minute. I thought the five on six defensive play was really good. They sh they they protected the house and Lindell Luds finished the game with almost a three-minute shift. He did not leave the that two-minute penalty kill. When you watch him, very conservative where he is and he doesn’t exert any energy. He doesn’t chase pucks that are 5050. He gets himself in a shooting lane and then generally if they see him in a shooting lane they move it somewhere else and again tick tick tick time’s coming off the clock and I was actually s surprised that Arneil the coach for Winnipeg pulled helluck with about 20ome seconds left. I I know it was a faceoff and everything, but you can obviously put the puck down, you know, without icing it because you’re shortand and even even if it sticks around in the zone for a little bit, there’s a Dallas star coming out of the box and now he’s going to be on the outside. So, I was kind of curious with that. It didn’t didn’t hurt him at all, but you know, again, I guess you’re you know, again, that’s a coach’s move and feel that you can keep the puck in and it didn’t didn’t really cost him, but we’ve had a lot to talk about already tonight. We still have one segment to go. We haven’t done any of your super chats yet. So, let’s do that next here on the DLS Stars Postgame show. It’s you again. All right. I was going to check, but I was pretty sure I’m going to tell you guys about the newsletter because here at DLS, we have an amazing newsletter. Five days a week, our boy Ali on the Cowboys show puts out a newsletter that tells you everything that’s happening here at DLS. He breaks it down, gives you the headline. It’s mostly Cowboys on the headlines because most of the time the Cowboys are doing something really stupid and that makes the headlines. But you also get your Stars, you get your Mavericks, you get your Rangers, you get some stuff from the Wings and other things that we do here as well. But Ali does a great job of summarizing an article uh summarizing a show pointing out that hey, the Stars guys had Bill Garin on their show. Here’s what they talked about. Putting links in there. It’s just a really easy way to catch up if you miss stuff during the week or just to see things that you weren’t able to read or watch at the time. So, go join the newsletter, guys. It’s totally free. Completely free. You don’t have to pay any money, Ryan. You believe that? Free. Free dollars. You couldn’t say free for 10 more seconds. I was waiting for him to talk, but Go to Go to alldls.com/newsletter. Read the newsletter now. He is rattled. Eagle one, you are signed off. I’m going to throw two at Ryan now. Go ahead, Ryan. What? Oh, I thought you leaned forward to your mic like you were going to say something. I want to give you a button that you press when you do that. I mute myself. Okay. Because when you press it, you lean in. It looks like you’re gonna make like the morning announcements at a school or something. Yeah. Attention travelers. I got two quick things to do. We have a Stars Takeover, DLS Stars Takeover coming up December 7th. It’s already sold out. We’re going to be on producer number five tomorrow. We I know. We’re running Ryan right out of the building. Nah, no way. Incredible, incredible demand already. Mostly bought up by Die Hards. Come to the studio. Watch the pregame show. Go to Hooters Next Door afterwards. Have dinner with us. go to the game, sit in the stands with us. We’re gonna have fun. Also, all no bonus. I mentioned at the top of the postgame show, one of the options this week that we’re really pushing is you can pick who wins Dallas Cowboys versus Carolina Panthers. If you get it right, you get a gift card from All City for the amount you spend on merch. So, $25 or more up to 250. Get it right, double your money at merch, you be a diehard. All the fun things. And we’re adding new reasons to be a die hard all the time, including a Luds emoji. Well, that’s not a die hard. That’s a supporters club, but I love that as well. Hey, what was that? What was the thing you were talking about where we’re going to Hooters and all that kind of call again? Stars Take Over. Okay. It’s sold out, right? It is. Are we doing another one or are we just teasing people? Why are we showing that if they can’t tell if you become a Die Hard, you would have learned about it fast? Yes. Die Hard’s got an early access. Are we going to have another one of them? We’re going to have some if sold out in two days. We’re going to definitely that we probably do another one at some point during the season. Hey, random fact. Mason Marshman scored his first goal for the Seattle Kraken. What? Good. Good for Mason. I like that. Former D star. What is it confusing to you, Luds, when you hear yourself say what and the drop? You didn’t say it. No, I heard something. I’m still I’m still confused about the other thing. Why do we keep showing if nobody can come to it? We’re celebrating. If you’re a diehard, you would have early access to that and maybe get in before it sells out if we do it again. So, that’s my question. What do you mean if we should be saying we are going to do it again? We are. I’m claiming it. All right, GM Ben assistant GM. Correct me if I’m wrong. Assistant GM Sam. Oh my god, that’s not a title you want to give him. Okay. Um, let’s go to the super chats here. The Stars Victory Pro postgame show. Bing bang. That was a lot louder than Lud saying what, wasn’t it? That’s okay. Mark Lowry with a Lquist after the cup. How long is the tape of low lightss from tonight’s game for both Otter and Murro? It’s not that bad. It’s already in the garbage. One clip. It’s already in the garbage can. I saw a couple people in the chat saying they didn’t think Mero had a very good game tonight. Is that because they’re frustrated with the some of the power play issues of us talking about Harley being a little more direct or I mean obviously he fell down on the one Connor goal. Mur really that bad any other mistake? I I don’t I don’t think it’s about I don’t think they’re Well, if they’re complaining about Mural, it’s because we’re complaining about not shooting, right? But I I mean here here’s I’m gonna tell you one thing. if they’re gonna Mero played 27 minutes tonight. So, I don’t know right now. I don’t know if Miro’s killed enough penalties in his career so far to be a top penalty killer because there’s things on when he was killing that I’m like, uh, I didn’t I didn’t like that so much. So Elaine, if you’re going to keep using him, get out there and work with him because and again, I don’t know if if we want him playing 30, 28, 29 minutes and killing penalties when when you have Labouchkin, you have Bishel, you have Thomas, they’re trying to get out there. I think Thomas can do it, but so I don’t you’re putting what is supposed to be your best defenseman in harm’s way a little bit. I’m with I’m with you. I I’m a big believer in especially when you’re a deep Stanley Cup contender team, use the pieces you have. You have 19 fourth line forwards and four guys that you don’t need to play 30 minutes, play them on your penalty kill. But all right, let’s go to the next one because we have more going along here and we’re headed towards overtime here in game one of the regular season. We’re in overtime. No, we’re not yet. But I’m saying we’re headed that way. Clarotus with a Lquist Lungquist. the shots on goal before the Jets scoring avalanche, pun intended, shows what happens when you shoot. You’re a lot you’re more you’re a lot more likely to score. So, they’re suggesting that if you shoot the puck, it might go in. Well, and you get people out of position. I mean, because they have to react to the shot and where the rebound and everything else goes. Otherwise, they just kind of stay where they are. Did you like that little uh give and go with Miro and Essa at one point where they’re trying to open up a lane? And Miro did get a shot off on that. They’re they’re down low slot on the right side there. Right in front of the net. Yeah. Yeah. Looked a lot like what they do after practice. Composure and patience though. All right, let’s go to the next one. Bing bang. Bigford 8989 with a h uh hasten at 99. Cup here. Great game, but need to keep foot on the gas with a big lead. Was it just me or did Miro seem sluggish tonight? Oh, we got some murals in here. We got some Muros in here. Listen, again, I’ll go back and I’ll say this. you if you have an opportunity to watch some other games here early on, you could probably say that about a lot of players in a lot of teams. It’s it’s the beginning of the year and it’s going to be like that in a lot of spots. All right, next one. Bing bang burned oils with a Brendan Smith. We’re still on Brennan Smith right now and the year after the cup luds was the problem really five to one to five to four. No comment. I think we could smart. I think we could change two to uh Darian Hatcher now. Should we go to Hatcher? I think we should go to Hatcher. No respect to Brendan Smith, but but we don’t have a two on the roster right now. Maybe it was supposed to be Hatch all the time. Yeah, maybe. Bing bang. Well, he hasn’t been on the show yet. Put him in the rafters. Chlorotus with a fit. Lewig Lewig. Oh, Lewig Dale Nhard. Thank you, Clarot, for for See, that’s how we should do it. Send in what you mean, too, so we don’t have to just make it up. Hella buck. That’s what he wanted. He wanted the hella buck one. All right, next one. Oh, I thought the jam was coming. No, that wasn’t the one he wanted. Bing bang. Ardell with a Hkinan and a Harley. Power play. Time on ice. Mero six plus minutes. Harley two minutes. Thoughts. Yeah, we hit that already. Rewind the tape. Yeah, with you Ardell. Think it should be the opposite. Bing bang. And again, it’s not because Miro isn’t really really good. It’s that we think that Harley might just be a little bit more direct and has a little bit more offensive flare. Miro’s great. I just think he’s a little more selfless and Harley’s a little bit more not in a good way selfish a little more gets the puck to the net. Art Ross winner Jamie Ben with a Casey to Smith and 99 Cup here. Root for WHL team silver tips or T-Irds? That’s an Everett versus Seattle question. Thoughts? Boy, I just Sam just either you were not listening, which is that’s it. He wasn’t listening. Yeah, see the Gophers today. Are you confused? Do you have a a preference between the Ever Silver tips and the Seattle? No. Thank you, Ryan. That was perfect drop. Say I’ll say Seattle because they have a cooler name. See, I see I’d say the the Silver Tips. Yeah, because Well, you know, there’s a Soard on the bench who’s a one of the, you know, them guys that are taking care of sticks and everything like that. And you mean the head equipment manager, Danny? dad, you know, used to be the GM of that team long time ago. He also was a pretty accomplished goalie, his dad, Doug. I played with him in Montreal. Did you? Nice. Let’s do uh at least one more. We’ve got Scott with a dismiss 99 copier. Joe Pavvelski ding needed first of 2526 season. Did you guys see that he is been announced as the ceremonial puck dropper for the home opener next Tuesday? Needed Joe Pavvelski ding needed first of 2526 season. First what? Joe. That was the first ding of Oh. Oh yeah. the regular season. Yeah, that’ll be cool cuz we’ve had dings in the preseason. Maybe a maybe another guy I know from Wisconsin could get him to come in studio while he’s in town. I guessing it’s a quick one in and out, right? Waiting. He’s not going to be here until Monday or Tuesday. So, just Well, you’re not going to be here Monday. I’m coming back on Monday. Yeah, but you’re not going to be in the show on Monday. Better get your ars back in here. Uh, can I say that word on the show? What did you say? Arce, but the regular word. You can say ass, too. It’s okay. You can say that. You just did? Yeah, I didn’t say that. That’s okay. Oh, he just did. He did. Yeah, he says all the things, though. It’s in the Bible. It is. Come to the DLS Takeover on that ass colored bus. Don’t believe that’s where we’re going on that one. I think that’s that’s correct. Okay. Just make sure we don’t get into old TV. That’s not right. Nope. That’s my That’s my new favorite drop because I don’t even have to say it then. Man of the match tonight. Oh, best player in the ice for the Dallas Stars or the Winnipeg Jets. Who do you think it was? I’m going with Moose. Yeah. I mean, yeah, he was phenomenal. So good. Dominant. That that trio though, Robertson, hints, ransin, they showed something to all of us of they should be together more than they should be separated. It should be very good. I said that like two weeks ago. I said it. makes sense. But but again, I think again, these coaches are going to do certain things here and because there’s going to be times when somebody’s out, so who can fill in there? Do you think when Jamie comes, listen, I thought Sam Steel was okay with those guys. I did too, but you know, we got it more it’s harder to match up against for the opposing coach when those three guys are together. I want to give an honorable mention to Nils Lungquist. I thought he had a really good performance tonight. And if he plays like this, you’re not going to worry about should he be in and out of the lineup. My question to you is when Jaime Ben comes back, whether it’s in three weeks, four weeks, we don’t know when it might be. Is it pretty clear you put Ben with Johnston and Bourke, you put Steel, Duchain Sean, and then Robo, and you don’t mess with that top line. Is that that the easiest thing? Well, I think that’s the easiest thing to do. Yeah. Again, it’s it’s more about if you’re Are you leaving Robo up there? Yeah. Yeah. Then that’s I think you have to Yeah. Yeah. Because I I don’t think I don’t think you’re putting Jamie with Duchain. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with putting Jamie. It’s very slow. It’s a very I would call it a very experienced line. They can make plays, but they just don’t have a lot of speed. Yeah. Well, tonight Duchain and Sean, it didn’t matter who was playing with them. They were watch all the early bird dinners. There is an old man group on the road that goes out to dinner at like six o’clock together. These are seriously. Yeah. I know Jamie’s in it. I think Duchain’s in ones that don’t want to wait till 7:00 or 9 the early Brendan Smith was definitely part of the early bird group. So that’s the one thing we’re looking at from there. Luds, from a defensive standpoint, I know it’s only one game and I know that there’s things to iron out. Were you How are you feeling about the three pairing system? When you watch the game and and it’s easier when you can sit with us and you watch it and slow it down, you see things. They’re still caught in the middle between the two systems. Yeah. Because you can tell like that on that one goal where Steel and and Hints hints knew Hints went and wanted to go out to his point for some reason where being a centerman that and I believe that’s what Gully’s trying to do because typically what you’re going to do in that kind of a system centerman will be working down in the down lower in the zone winger stay on the walls or in the middle of the ice and hint just got hint was going in the right spot then he curled and just went out and you could see that as soon as he saw Connor was open and then him and Steel were kind of holding hands right there. You saw Hint’s head go back like, “Oh shit, I’m supposed this is where I’m supposed to be.” Y, you know, and then I think Sam was going to try. You don’t I didn’t say it. I didn’t follow up. I said shit. I don’t shit. I don’t think he added the tea. I didn’t have the tea in it. I don’t know if the examples. What did you think of Justin Rgoian tonight, Sam? Uh, didn’t notice him a ton. He looked good going across the serve that penalty. Yeah, he was great on the penalty. Well, he did he came out of the box and back checked on the goal, but his little his little scrap was good. That’s what I like about him. Yeah, he played I don’t know how many minutes he played. He didn’t play a ton. Uh if only we had a chance in front of us to look at. He was mostly skipped over on the on those lines, but 8 minutes and 41 seconds. Yeah. So, first game for him in a in a very long time. Uh I’m sure play a little bit less. Yeah, he did. 746. Yeah. Uh now those guys I don’t think are part of the penalty kill whereas Foxa is. Fox played 1321, played 341 shorthanded. I mean, Fox is their first forward up penalty killing, isn’t he? Right. He’s one of the first guys usually. Well, he should be. He should be. I mean, that that’s where with his reach and not He’s kind of weighted towards defending and, you know, that kind of stuff and faceoffs. So, he and Steel both played almost four minutes of short-handed time. Yeah, they were really good. Blackwell played 324 short-handed. Uh, got to clean up the penalties a little bit, but Winnipeg does too. Okay, so Luds is off tomorrow because he is on his way to a trip to Chicago with his U8 team. Sean and Sam and I will be here and we might have we have a plan for a Colorado Avalanche playbyplay voice radio. Conor McGee as for a segment. We’ll see. 2:00 show tomorrow. Luds will be back remotely for Saturday’s game in Colorado. For Ryan, for Luds, for Sam, I’m Owen. First one’s done. One and0. Thanks for joining us here on DLLS. It's a tough stretch to start the season, so I'm glad to get the win.
Mikko is going to be absolute fire for us 🔥
I'm glad you guys are saying it. I genuinely don't want to just be a hater, but Jake looked terrible. He faced half the number of shots and gave up nearly the same number of goals.
I know that breakaways are not Oettinger's fault, but how many times is he going to get frozen at the edge of the crease? He gives up that goal time after time. He had never learned to adapt.
