TABLE TALK: The Sixers Season Is Upon Us!

[Music] [Applause] Welcome to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia Sports Table Podcast Show. The longest running weekly Philly Sports Podcast show in the world. 12 years strong. Actually, it’s more like 12 and a half. We’re getting to that point. Anyway, we’ve got a great great discussion coming your way this week on Table Talk. We haven’t talked about the Philadelphia 76ers too much here at the PSD podcast show. Uh, and we we we got to get into it because this season is almost here. It’s almost upon us. Eric and I were talking about what we’ve seen with these uh preseason games a bit and with this team um and specifically the Grimes extension on this past podcast. You can go back in the feed and check out that. But we’re going to just focus on this team and what to expect this coming season with our buddy from libertyballers.com. We love our SP Nation sites. You know that out there. We’ve got Harrison Grim, my friend. how are you doing and thanks for joining us. Yeah, for sure. It’s great to hear from you. Always happy to to hop on and chop up the six series. As you and I both know, there’s always something to talk about with this team. Absolutely. Yeah. So, I really appreciate the invite. I’m I’m ready to get into uh preseason vibes. Absolutely. Le let’s get into what the vibes here are going to be, not only with the fan base here, but with the team. I The season’s going to be here before we know it for sure. But there’s this, and I hate to say it like this because there are things that I’m excited for in terms of this upcoming season, but there’s this kind of murky cloud that’s hanging over this team here, Harrison, and you look at the power rankings, Sixers power rankings and league power rankings, and you’re like, “Oh boy, not great.” You look at the roster and who the starting five are going to be right out of the gate and you’re kind of like, “Okay, maybe not the most optimal.” You look at Joel Embiid, Paul George, their health, and you know, some of some within the fan base have at this point kind of like thrown up their hands and said, “Ah, the season’s going to stink.” And again, there are certain things I’m looking forward to when it comes to this team, which we’re going to be getting into. But um I I’m wondering what are your thoughts in terms of the vibes, the mood of the fan base and and also you know perhaps like the team as we really start looking at what this season may actually be here. Let’s talk about these vibes. What are your thoughts here? Yeah, I think uh just from the stuff that I see online firsthand from uh the fans, I think that’s the first pers perspective I’ll touch on here. Uh but I I think people uh to a certain extent are are sick of this team. It’s it’s kind of like the same old Sixers. It’s gone to that point. Well, it’s it’s arguably even worse because the same old Sixers with second round exits. Now, they’re they’re a playin team, annual playin team. So, we’re going down the slide here. Uh but I think fans have a reason to be skeptical about this team at this point. I mean, there’s there’s no denying it. Uh constant flame outs or just seasons where stuff goes off the rails or or or both really. Um, and I and I totally understand that from a fan perspective. There’s certainly some um, silver linings I think that you’re going to start to see take shape uh, this season. So, I do think people should tune into this team from time to time. I think they’re really going to start laying down a foundational block, if you will, with a few of these players that we’re going to get into later. U, that’s important though in terms of the vibes. I think I really do when they start laying that foundation that you’re talking about Harrison with the future. I mean, seeing that manifest itself, that’s an important aspect not only of this game, but what this team’s going to be down the road. Yeah, for sure. Um, and and like I said, we we’ll get into that more. There’s some questions geared towards some of those foundational blocks. Uh, but but I think what’s more interesting is the vibes around the team. And it seems like all the vibes around the Sixers are surprisingly good. Um, and like I said, I understand the reason to be skeptical when it comes to this team, especially at this point. Uh, but everything that they’re saying is the right thing. We’re just taking it day by day. And with a team with so much uncertainty, so much uncertainty with their franchise player, uh, so much uncertainty with Paul George, that’s really all you can do. Yeah. Uh so I I think uh that was a big takeaway from media day is it was quite different than last year. Obviously there’s all this uncertainty hanging uh but but the mood on media day was certainly a lot different uh particularly with Joel Embiid and Joelle in particular gave some really strong comments talking about getting his mental in the right place uh just doing the things that he can do um outside of the physical stuff with his knee. Yeah. Um, and and really that’s that that’s all Joel can do. That’s all this team can do. Um, and I think Maxi in particular has really tried to instill a culture and is still trying to instill a culture with this team moving forward that hey, we might not know who’s going to be on the floor any given night. Uh, but the Sixers are going to play their asses off. And I think that that’s really the mentality that they need at this point. uh with all the uncertainty he’s just looming. I think it was one of it might have been you, one of the writers over at Liberty Ballers, you know, the the actual title of the article was Joel and B with that zen a zen-like attitude and atmosphere surrounding him at the meeting recently. And to get into Joel, um my co-host and I, Eric, we were talking last week talking about what type of player, you know, we might see from him this season. Like what type of play might we see from him if and when he’s able to get on the court into any sort of basketball shape here? You know, is he a guy that’s going to be able to put up maybe 22, 24 points per game? And is that optimal at this point in his career given his physical health and physical challenges? So I I guess the question is based on what we heard from Joel Embiid last week, where he is in his career from a health perspective, but also from a mental health perspective, again, he had that zen-like attitude, you know, last week uh when he was available for the media, like what should the expectations be for him? Like what what type of Joel Embiid should we see this year? Yeah, I mean that’s a great question and and that’s the question that everyone’s asking themselves like how much Joel are we gonna see this year if we’re gonna see Joel at all. Uh I think if he is on the court I think you’ll see form pretty reminiscent to what we’ve seen before. Obviously I think the last image that people have with Joel is that season where there was the James Harden hold out and he was dropping just like 40 on 30 minutes per game. you dropped 70 on WBY and and you know it’s just like to expect that at this point I I think you’re setting yourself up for failure, right? Uh kind of what you floated with the with the points per game. 22 24 I think that’s the realm you’re talking about. Maybe even a little bit more than that. Okay. Um I do think his role is going to be something that’s interesting to watch. Um over the summer, Daryl my uh kind of got asked like, “Hey, if Joel gets on the floor with the Sixers getting all this young new talent that’s going to need the ball in their hands, uh could we see a role shift?” And Daryl kind of pushed back on that a little bit. He was like, “Joel is such a competitive player. He’s an MVP caliber player that if Joelle’s on the floor, he’s going to look like Joelle.” Uh, and actually on media day again, um, Joelle talked a lot about just being in the dunker spot and playing within the offense, which I thought was really interesting, which kind of contradicts, uh, Daryl’s comments earlier in this summer. Uh, so obviously he’s not going to be an off ball just, you know, floating in the dunker spot constantly. Yeah. Uh, but I do think that’s an interesting noteworthy quote where the Sixers could potentially start to switch up their offense. And there is a gain for Joel in that in that he doesn’t have to be the guy putting up 30 at 30 a game every night, you know, just constantly getting the ball every possession after possession, right? uh we’ve seen a growing playmaking skill in the past few years that he could potentially lean into more uh which could in theory um ease his load and allow him to appear in more games. So it’s tough to really gauge what kind of role he’s going to have with this team. Um, but if he and and all signs so far point towards the right direction. Obviously, it’s the Sixers, so you you never really know. Uh, but if he is on the court, I I do think you’ll see Joel that we’ve seen in past years. I think you’ll see more of the Olympic version of him um in the sense where he’s it’s a lot of just spot-up shooting. Not really much uh postgame, per se. Yeah. Um but maybe he leans into crashing the boards more. I know Joel has kind of been an iffy, you know, by the basic numbers, he’s a good rebounder, but I test he’s kind of an iffy rebounder. Yeah. So, maybe he can lean into that more. Maybe he can lean into his playmaking ability more. Um, it really remains to be seen and and there’s comments that contradict both sides on that. So, it’ll be interesting to see play out. Absolutely. And I guess, you know, as we’re moving along here, I’ll ask the same type of question I did about Embiid as as it pertains to Paul George because it it seems likely that he’ll probably be, you know, moving to the power forward position a little bit more here just from reports and and and what we’re reading. One would have to believe that his numbers are probably going to go up as a result of that. What do you think we should be expecting from Paul George this season given where he is at right now in his career? Yeah, I think Paul George actually had some of the more interesting comments uh when when they made him available for media day, particularly uh what you’re referencing with him playing power forward. That’s something historically he’s really pushed back on. Yeah. In his career. And obviously in 2025 it’s it’s a little bit different than uh 2015 or even 2017 in the sense that you’re seeing a lot of smaller fours really essentially just bigger small forwards playing the four. Uh we we’ll see uh what the trend is uh with the dual bigs that may or may not be making a return. More teams are starting to lean into that. But for the most part, you’re seeing guys that are kind of like Jason Tatum U in the sense that it’s a lot more ball handling, a lot more shot creation, less like pound the paint, rebounding. Um, so from a usage standpoint or production standpoint rather, uh, I think you’ll see a lot better uh, than what we saw last season with Paul George. And the reason that I say that isn’t me doubling down on Paul George or even necessarily having faith in Paul George. Yeah, but we did see what he could do last year when he was hampered. And let’s face it, this guy was never really healthy last year. And he still put up respectable numbers. Yeah, it’s not Paul George numbers, not the numbers you or I were expecting. Uh but he still showcas some stuff. He showcased that he’s a gravity shooter. Defenses are not going to leave him alone. Uh you can play him on or off the ball. and the Sixers really put the ball in his hands more, especially uh kind of down the stretch before the wheels completely fell off. Um, and him and Maxi were kind of developing a chemistry where he’d bring up the ball, he set up Maxi at the top of the key. So, he can offer things like that, which the Sixers haven’t really had um much in the Joel Embiid era. Obviously, you have Ben Simmons, but he’s not a shot creator. He’s not someone defense is worth respecting on the perimeter. The closest thing to that would be Jimmy Butler and that was only a half season arrangement. So I think from a playmaking standpoint, Paul George can really be beneficial to this team and especially to Tyrese Maxi. He’s someone that from a statistical standpoint, he’s better off the ball. His numbers, his efficiency all go up when he goes off the ball. And that’s something I think you’ll also see with BJ Edgecomb, Jared McCain. There’s guys that can bring the ball up the floor, help set up the offense, and just take the load off Tyrese Maxi. So, I feel like that’s an area in particular where Paul George can really shine. Um, now him playing the power forward, it gets a little bit iffy. Again, uh, it all comes back to rebounding and he’s a good rebounder for a small forward. He’s obviously got good size, 68, 69. Um, I’m curious how that would look. uh especially if Joel Embiid is the center beside him because you’re asking Paul George to really kind of crash the boards a lot more and he’s an older guy. You don’t necessarily want the wear and tear. So, I’d be curious to see how that works. But from an offensive standpoint, I think there’s a lot of gains playing him at the four. Uh and just with the personnel, the Sixers are going to have to do that. um one of these backup fours, Trenan Watford, uh the two-way guys, Jabari Walker, Dominic Barlo, maybe they become something, but as things stand right now, they’re question mark. So, if one of those guys hits, it’s a different conversation. But as is, um I’m really curious about what that would look like from Paul George. And coming into this season, going back to the question at hand, uh, in terms of expectations, uh, it seems like Paul George will be ready towards the beginning of the season. I’m not saying he’ll be ready day one, but it really seemed like a lot of the comments around him were inferring that he’s not going to miss much time um, if he misses time at all. Uh, so that’s a that’s a promising development. Obviously, the sooner the Sixers can get all these guys on the court, the more potential they have to make the playoffs and actually do something. Absolutely. And a lot of questions. A lot of questions like you said, a lot of And and that is what for me is going to be making this upcoming season. So, very interesting to watch. And I don’t think it’s as murky necessarily as people may think out there. And yes, it may be pie in the sky thinking, but I’m the optimist on this uh podcast. you should talk to my buddies Eric and Len. They’ll they’ll set you straight with the pessimism. So, that being said, Harrison, we’re going to take a quick break, but first, let everybody know where they can find you on the interwebs if they want to connect with you. Yeah, for sure. You can find me on uh Twitter right here. This handle right here, Harrison_Grim with two M’s. You can also find me on uh Blue Sky, the same name. And yeah, that’s where you’ll find most of my work. Eric and I are over on Blue Sky. You can check us out there as well. We are going to take a quick break and when we get back we’ve got more Sixers talk coming your way. All right, we’re back with our good friend Harrison Grim. Great great contributor over at uh SBNations Libertyballers.com at harrison_grim as he told us right before the break. Let’s dive into some things we’re really going to be looking forward to with this Sixer season. And and there’s two guys in particular I cannot wait to see on the court. First is VJ Edge. He he is a guy I cannot wait to see what he’s just going to do. It’s just he’s kind of like this breath of fresh air. Harrison, I can’t wait for him, you know, once the regular season starts and once Jared McCain is healthy and he’s able to get on the court. These two are going to be fun to watch in my opinion this season. What What are your thoughts on both players and what we should be looking for this year from from a developmental standpoint when it comes to these guys? Yeah. So, I’ve I’ve been deep in in uh the VJ Edgecom world for the past few months ever since it really seemed like the point where point towards him being the the third overall pick, which was pretty early on in the process to be frank with you. Um but I’ll start off with him. Uh VJ, I I like what you said about him being a breath of fresh air cuz all the conversation this summer was centered around this guard talk. They have so many guards. How is it going to work? who are they going to pay, that type of thing. And I think a lot of people maybe not necessarily miss, but what gets lost in that conversation is just how different of a guard uh than he is from what they have. And we’ve had a little bit of Jerry McCain. We’ve had a lot of Tyrese Maxi who are smaller scoring guards. Yep. Obviously great scorers, pretty good playmakers. Uh leave something to be desired on the defensive end. And VJ Edgecomb is just such a different type of guard. And you’re starting to see that in the preseason. You got someone who with a real 65 like chiseled frame for a 20-year-old. Uh a chiseled frame who just is willing to crash the boards, willing to play above the rim. Um on both ends really. Uh there’s a lot of talk obviously with his athleticism, with his dunks, uh what what he can do, but even on the defensive end, this is someone uh who averaged nearly a block per game at Baylor. Um this is a really good defensive-minded guard, and that’s where I think you’re really going to see him shine this year. Um I I there’s obviously stuff to work on. Um but he’s so good on the defensive end. Uh, I’m really excited to see what he can do there. Uh, I think the Sixers are gonna put the ball in his hand a decent amount, especially with Quinton Grimes getting there late. Uh, Jared McCain obviously might miss some time to start the year. Uh, so VJ is a guy who’s going to get on ball on on ball offensive reps. Um, and I’m really curious to see what that yields to. He’s someone that has proven to make good basic reads. Uh, I don’t know if he can necessarily be a full-time playmaker. That’s something that’s gonna have to be answered in the years to come. Yeah. But he’s someone that can just make Tyrese Maxis’s job so much easier, taking the tough defensive assignments, getting tough rebounds, competing on the boards, being a um ball handler. He’s someone that I really think is going to make Tyrese Maxis’s job just easier this year. And I think that’s a big thing. uh not not just for this team success, but for Tyrese’s individual success. Yeah. Uh so I have really high hopes for VJ. I think you know we got two preseason basketball games worth of sample size at the NBA level. So take it with a grain of salt, but I’ve seen enough in this preseason to affirm that he’s going to be a guy in the NBA. It’s really just a question of how good the defensive instincts are there. The athleticism is there. Uh it’s really just refining that offensive game, refining his handle. Um that’s going to make or break his ceiling and that’s something that’s going to have to come in the in the uh seasons to come. Yeah. Now with Jared McCain, that’s the ultimate wild card. and we were doing uh player preview previews over at Liberty Ballers coming into the season and I actually had the chance to write about him extensively and I really determined that outside of Joel Embiid and Paul George, he’s really the biggest swing variable uh for this Sixers team and in the back court especially. Yeah. Um we saw what 20 games where last year where he was undisputedly the best rookie of his class. He looked like a the best player on the court at at times with Joe Lmbby, Paul George, Tyrese Max. He just completely blew everybody away. Blew away my expectations. And it’ll be interesting to see how real that was. Um I think he’s proven he’s a really gifted offensive player. Uh just off the ball, on the ball, he can score. He can put the ball in the basket. Uh it’ll be interesting to see defensively where things stand. If he can be just good enough where the offense is just too good, you can’t take him off the court. Maybe the Sixers play small with VJ at the three. There’s so many different things that they can do. But if Jiren McCain really figures it out on defense, uh it just opens a world of playing time and yeah, his offensive ability and just uh his spacing, his ability to relocate off the ball is invaluable. So, it really just comes down to defense and obviously uh some of some of it will be playmaking as well, which he actually has shown some pretty promising flashes. Um, but if he doesn’t figure out the defense, that’s where the crowded back court might become a bit more problematic because presumably Jared McCain’s probably going to come off the bench to start the year. They’re probably going to start Maxi. Yeah, they are going to start Tyrese Maxi and then you’re looking at one of VJ Edgecom or Wayne Grimes and right now it seems like VJ is going to be the guy. So yeah, McCain’s defense and just seeing how real last year was, that’s going to be the the big swing variables for Jiren McCain. And if he’s just too good to keep off the floor, the Sixers have a really good problem on their hands. Absolutely. Abs. I was hoping that’s where you would go with it. Have a good problem. We need a good problem within Sixers Nation. For sure we do. Cuz look, and look, this leads me to the next topic, too. And and I know this is a very general question, Harrison, but I’m wondering how how we will see this team grow this upcoming season here, whether it’s with younger guys like VJ Edgecom and and McCain along with Tyrese Maxi, how it all works out, like you said, you know, could we have a good problem to deal with or is it going to be a balance between veterans like Embiid and Paul George providing that growth, that mentoring to the young players? Maybe it’s a combination of all of it here. How do you think this team really grows this season as as they’re trying to lay that foundation that you were initially talking about? Yeah, I I think again it’s dominated by the backourt discussion. How is this going to shake out? Uh is are they just going to continue going forward Tyrese Maxi being the guy? And I I expect that but who knows? We we’ve seen crazier things in the NBA. uh the the VJ Quinton thing. I guess his agent’s pretty concerned about that. I’m I’m not really, but apparently he is. So, how does that shake out? And we just got done talking about McCain and Maxi. But that’s really going to be uh interesting to see how that shakes out when you go down the roster and you get into the front court, which it’s more veteran heavy. You got Paul George, you got Joel Embiid. I’m actually not that concerned about that. Uh assuming they can actually get on the court. That’s the big thing with them. But if they can get on the court, I actually think uh from an on the court production standpoint, they can be really valuable connectors for these young guards. Uh Paul George, I I know he’s had trouble with injuries and such, but he’s someone that does everything you’d want well on the offensive end. He moves well without the ball. He’s capable of shooting off the dribble, off the catch. Uh he’s someone that can play hon or on the ball. Uh take the defensive assignments that are tough that you know VJ’s a talented defender. Quinton Grimes is also a capable defender too. But these aren’t guys you want logging heavy minutes guarding forwards and that’s somewhere where they’re really going to need Paul George. Yeah. They’re also going to need a rim protector behind all these guards whether that’s Joel Embiid Deona um any of the other front court guys that we mentioned. Uh, I think the Sixers have the pieces to do that. It really just comes down to whether or not they’re healthy. And I I think at the end of the day, the conversation just constantly comes back to this back court where you have Tyrese Maxi who’s still pretty young. He’s getting up there in age, which makes me feel old. Um, I know. I can’t believe how long he’s been here. Yeah. He said, uh, what did he say? Year six on media day. I know. Like, holy crap. Yeah. And and obviously VJ, you know, he’s a rookie. Quinton Grimes is a bit younger trying to establish himself. Jared McCain’s just coming into his second year. Uh so I think this year will be a really good temperature check to see where all these respective guys are, what works, what doesn’t work. Yeah. Um and and I think if Joel Embiid and Paul George can get on the floor, again, a big if. Those are guys I know can produce, these are guys I know can help fill in the seams. Uh it really just comes down to the guard situation. Yeah. And it I I uh anyway, we we only have so much time here. I was just going to be going in another direction, but I did have another topic to close us out here. So, let’s let’s do that here instead of making this a 4hour podcast, which nobody wants to see my face or hear my voice for that long. You absolutely not me. But, uh, look, to close us out here, Sixers are currently, I think it’s about $7 million over the luxury tax. Third year in a row now for this organization over the luxury tax. Um, they’ve they’ve gotten under the luxury tax, however, each year after the trade deadline. If they’re not winning by the trade deadline this year, Harrison, you know, do you think we’re going to be seeing some guys traded, you know, getting some salaries off the books? And I mean, what does that essentially do to that building the foundational aspects of this team perhaps? You know, it’s uh going to be interesting for sure, but what are your thoughts there in terms of the luxury tax? What we may see with that in the future? Yeah. So, uh, as you said, they’re about 7 million over the luxury tax. Obviously, if things start to fall apart, they’re kind of out of the playoff picture, they’re just barely making it, uh, there is a really good chance that they could look to move salary. um 7 million, you’re probably looking at two contracts primarily. Uh you would be looking to offload, and that would be Kelly Ubé, I think, who makes a hair over 8 million. So, if you were to dump him to another team for no salary at all, there you go. There’s your remedy. The issue with that, however, is you’re putting a lot of eggs into the Paul George basket. also a lot of eggs into the Justin Edwards basket who I still have some level of faith in but he’s had a rough summer league, a rough preseason. We’ll see if he’s able to turn it around and if he is then maybe this becomes a much different conversation in a few months. But Kelly Ubé is someone where he does solve like if if you’re trying to shed salary, he solves that problem. Uh, but I think the pendulum, if you will, kind of swung too far the wrong uh the certain way with him. Um, and the fan base kind of seems out with him. And I understand like he does boneheaded stuff. He has tunnel vision. He certainly has his warts. Um, and I forget who said this, but when you have Kelly Ubé kind of filling in the gaps with talent around him, that’s really where he shines. And you kind of see more of it even this postseason with just Tyrese Maxi, with BJ Edgecom, with guys who can actually play. Uh when he can just hone in on defense and add a splash of offense here and there, he I think he’s a productive player. Um now, if the wheels are falling off, you you aren’t necessarily thinking about that. Uh especially if you’re the Sixers ownership, you just you want to get money off your book, you got to fuel the private jet. Okay. Um, the other name I said is Andre Drummond, who doesn’t quite get you to that number, but if you were to tack on another salary, uh, let’s say I don’t know if uh, Eric Gordon has a no trade clause or not, but assuming he doesn’t, if you package Eric Gordon and Andre Drummond, that’s another way to duck underneath the luxury tax and possibly open up a roster spot or two where you could convert one of those two-way guys. So, I think those are the names that are going to be interesting to watch. The whole Quinton Eric Gordon, by the way, does not have a no trade clause. He’s So, yeah, he does not have a no trade clause. Yeah, perfect. Yeah, thank you. Um, so those are the names that I would primarily watch. The Quinton Grimes thing really kind of throws a wrench into everything because he does have a no trade clause. Yeah. So, he’s not going anywhere without him or his agent signing off. And that could potentially be pretty difficult for the Sixers if they’re looking to let off a guard. I think at this point it would probably be him. Um, we’ll see how that situation shakes out. Uh, but those Drummond and Cali Ubé, those are the two major salaries they have to work with. So whether or not they move both of them to shed salary, maybe pick up a contributor or just uh trade away uber to get beneath the luxury tax there. There’s a few different things they can do, but a lot of these mount trades are going to come down to those two guys. Yeah, it’s going to be interesting. And folks, the season is right around the corner. We’re going to be talking more Philadelphia 76ers here at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show with our friends from Liberty Ballers and uh some other great guests that we’re going to be bringing on as well in the future. Folks, he’s Harrisburg Harrison Gr. My gosh, this is All right, I’m I’m going to let All right, I’m going to open up the curtain. As many of our many of our listeners know, I’m I’m running for higher office and I and I’m in contact with people in Harrisburg all the time. Right before we jumped on here, I was doing campaign stuff with people from Harrisburg. That’s why I almost just said Harrisburg when our good friend Harrison is here. My gosh, you could just slap me in the face when we actually meet each other. How about that, Harrison? Why don’t we do that? Okay, you could just slap me in the face cuz I am out of my mind. Never do that to an elected official. Could never do that. Oh, that’s true. Well, anyway, you could do it with me. It’d be a There’s a first time for everything, my friend. Thank you so much for taking the time to join us on our table talk interview show here. Let’s go Sixers. And uh come back and join us down the road. I’d love to have you back on the show, my friend. Sounds good. Thanks for having me on. [Music] [Applause]
