Brodie’s Breakdown vs VGK (10/10)

Brody Brazil with Drew Amenda here at SAP Center. Recap game one of the season. You don’t get to say that very often. And a result almost like we’ve never seen before. Drew, this was a 4-3 Golden Knights win in overtime. How do we first separate what was a good night for the Sharks overall with the final result that they’re probably not happy with? It’s a great question. And should we should we separate them? Should we be separating them? I think most of the night went quite well. Yeah. But again, the final couple minutes, 32 times last year with the San Jose Sharks, the night went quite well where they were involved in one goal or what the NHL calls close games, which is one goal loss or one goal plus an empty net. And many, many of those times they had the lead in the third period and they played well. They played hard, but they didn’t get the result. Are we at a place yet where the result is only thing that matters? Now, you’re right. There’s a lot of good things. William Mackin played a hell of a game. Y the defense played well. Um there were moments where I thought Celerbrini and Smith played really well. Drew, I thought Nadulkovich for most of the night he was great was the reason that the Sharks were staying in this game and had a narrow lead. Yeah, he was he was terrific and there was a lot of good things to see on that. But it comes back to the end. Comes back to the end. And they didn’t learn how to win this one yet. Yeah, there was there’s a situation where they’ve got an empty net chance. Well, first off, Alex Went’s got an empty net. He’s He gets the puck in his own zone. Move your feet. Don’t stop and then flip it out. That flip play is one of the most irritating things in the National Hockey League. He tries to flip it out and it goes off the scoreboard, right? All you got to do is skate, right? Skate, move your feet. Then they get the puck back. It comes out of the zone out. They they they make the good play. It comes out of the zone and then they get it to William Mecklan. And William Ecklund has got surrounded and the effort by Jack Eel and Tomas Hurdle was great. Yeah. William wants to skate it as much as he can to the net and fortunately gets knock off the stick and it gets stopped twice for an empty net. And then Jack Eel with a flip from the red line. A flip from the red line and goes by and it’s not even close. Yeah. And to go five hole on Ned too as they bounce through. It’s like real quick. You mentioned hurdle. What a night to be here, by the way, where Ryan Reeves gets cheered by Sharks fans and Tomas Hurdle gets booed by Sharks fans. Now, come ever since he gone to Vegas, he’s become dirty. See how dirty he was today? Hurdle was throwing the body a little bit. He was very He took two penalties from behind. Two penalties in tonight’s game. Terrible person. Was what he did? Did that come with a little bit of intent? Like he had something in his in his mind tonight, right? But we’ve never seen that from him. He he wanted to trade. He was the guy that wanted out. He was the guy that wanted to go to Vegas. He should be nothing but nice to the San Jose Sharks. I think he’s just a dirty player and we just haven’t realized it till now. I also I don’t think so. I also think too that um and maybe you you kind of alluded to this before, the Sharks veteran players tonight, Jeff Skinner gets the first goal of his Sharks career. I thought some of the veterans were some of the most steadying players in the lineup. Absolutely outstanding. Um there was again you want to break it down into into the smaller pieces. You want to break it down player by player, shift by shift, you can look at the San Jose Sharks, go that’s what you’re looking for. They played fast. They played physical. I was impressed with their quickness. I was impressed with taking the puck to the net. Um couple of key penalty kills. Yep. You could say a lot of good things about about them. The end. Yeah. Well, it’s what you’re going to come back to every single time, right? Yes. You still Good teams Good teams, even though they haven’t played very well, good teams figure out how to win. You still get a point and that puts you on an 82 game point pace for the season, which I know you’re not happy with. No, and I’m not even trying to be like totally optimistic, but I I do think it’s okay to get mad at this now. It’s okay to get frustrated. If your team is good enough to be in these games with a tough team like Vegas on opening night, then you want to be good enough to win these games. We can all be mad at it and and rightfully we should. But but are you learning any lessons from it? went through it time after time after time last year. Are you learning any lessons from it? And that’s what matters. Will they learn any lessons from it? Yes, I know Alex Dulkovich feels horrible. I know the team feels like they let one slip away, which they did. Sure. And Alex should feel bad. He’s he’s a he’s a guy who’s a he’s a goalender who’s always searching for perfection. And we always look at with goalenders, the goals they let in versus the goals that the goals they don’t or the ones that should be or those saves that they make. But for the Vegas Golden Knights, it’s a team that’s a good hockey team and they found a way to win. You want to call it lucky or what, whatever you want to do. They won the game and that’s what the Sharks have to get to. Last thing, Drew, uh, I am excited to see Sam Dickinson and Michael Misa and Yarislavascarov and that’s probably going to come on Saturday. But again, to the point of the veterans and their impact and their steadying influence in tonight’s game and Nadulkovich, again, for most of the night until the end, I think the coaching staff, it was proven that they made the right decision to do this tonight, no matter what every fan in attendance wanted to see. One thing that Mike Greer had talked about since he came to the San Jose Sharks and Ryan Warsovski talked about the last two years is that you are going to earn your spots. You’re going to earn your starts. You’re going to earn your ice. And every one of those guys, Ty Dander is a perfect example. He earned that third line center spot and he played a hell of a game tonight. He really played he made so many good strong plays. So anybody, nobody’s going to be granted a position. I do think they’re going to slow walk both Misa and and Dickson into the lineup, but that’s okay. What they did with Will Smith last year worked out very well and I think it’s going to work out again. I think they’ve got a plan for well I know they’ve got a plan for both those guys but I do like the fact that you got to earn your starts. You got to earn your ice time with Ryan Rossovski and staff for such a heartbreaking game. Drew, you did a fantastic job breaking that down. Phenomenal A+ two points for you. Thank you very much. Appreciate that.

  1. Like drew says, learn and move forward. It was otherwise a strong effort. Honestly we got screwed by physics , but the overtime was terrible. Smith honestly was not very good tonight and we were bad in ot. If I see the effort I saw before the breakdown, this team is gonna be way better.

  2. You dont lose that game with Askarov and Misa. Warofsky is an idiot and continues to make puzzling decisions. Team needs an experienced coach

  3. Ryan Reeves over Misa was criminal and just one of the many reason these young coaches dont last. They try and out think everyone and big brain everything. More of the same from this team

  4. we were supposed to learn how to win from all these blown games last year. we’re still trying to “use it as learning experience”? what is there to learn from when the veteran goalie gives up 2 of the worst goals of all time, at the worst possible time? sharks lost 23 of our last 27 to vgk, led wire to wire and lost in the most laughing stock way possible. this game literally felt like god punishing us. i don’t know how i witness that and don’t just think “same old sharks”. appreciate u guys and apologies for the rant, i’ve watched a lot of games from this team over the years and idk if any of them gave me the feeling this one did

  5. This looks like a different team from last year. Veterans made a huge impact tonight. If Celebrini/Smith/Eklund all take a step forward too… this could be an exciting season

  6. earn your starts !!…..then why are Luca , Cards and Lund in the AHL……they outplayed some of those veteran guys and yet they were sent down …..words are easy to say it's ACTIONS that show that you mean it…..

  7. Such a great game until the last few minutes, and even though I WANT to say "wow, they do look so much better, they're playing great!" we still end up with a catastrophic, gobsmacking loss, by one goal, yet again. This REEKS of the SAME bs as last year. CLOSE, narrow losses, where IF we woulda pulled out a win, we honestly coulda been in playoff spot discussions. We HAVE to win these games. THIS kind of last minute loss BS needs to stop!

  8. Weinberg failed flip, Schmid stop on Kurashev (Kurashev was fantastic), Eklund missed empty net, unlucky bounce for tying goal, Ned made a bad mistake trying to play the puck. The sharks were better in my opinion though.

  9. Alex was probably star the game up till that unlucky bounce!
72 has the bury that empty no doubt about it! Overtime, the boys gotta get it in deep get off not for players up the middle that left Alex hung out the dry
I think we found our new goalie that’ll be around for a while after seeing that performance.
    Boys got his back!

  10. This young team needs a captain. Toffoli should be named knowing it will be Macklin when he’s ready. Trust the players you have and where they are at.

  11. Only thing I really disagree with is the idea that the Sharks roster construction revolves around "earning a spot." Goodrow has done nothing to earn his ice time and he showed that last night as the absolute worst player on the ice by a longshot. Did that display result in him losing his spot? No, it resulted in him getting penciled in for the same spot again this Saturday.

  12. You guys are the best! Great to see you two teamed up again……. I’m optimistic, I think we will be a surprise team this year and this will be a loss that will trigger things…..and yes, call me sunshine.😂 Go🦈
