Spotify, Apple, you know the deal. Uh, and then there’s a lot of other great stuff at CLS2, Celtics Press Pass, uh, Patriots All Access, lots of great stuff there. I’m Effan Marinowski, that’s Court Lond, what is up? Hey, not much. You know, my my Blue Jays are uh, God bless the Toronto Blue Jays. The honestly that Vlad thing at the end and Ortiz didn’t even have to like do it and he was just like Yankees lose. It was just beautiful. But uh other than that, you know, Bruins 2 and 0, it’s been pretty good watching sports for me lately. It’s been nice. How do How do you feel about the Bruins? What are your takeaways from first two games? It’s two games, so I I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I see some things they need to improve on. I do see uh you know game one man that first period like I joked to you that I fell asleep during overtime last night but um that first period that could put anybody to sleep and that’s just the way this Bruins team’s going to play this year. I I think it’s going to be tight checking, tight defense. It’s they’re going to get the chances when they need him. It reminds me a lot of you know Clo after they won the cup. He was more defensive structure than we’d ever seen. you know, we’re going to see a lot of the trap. It’s just it is what it is. And it’s interesting. Um I have noticed that when they break off from it or they they mess up just a smidge, just like just a little the minute little smidge, um that’s when they give chances to the other team. Other than that, you know, like I’m happy that they’re being successful so far. I’m extremely happy that Fraser Mitten looks like amazing. And it’s it’s hilarious when you revisit that trade now and you think about it. They didn’t just get Fraser Mitten for Brandon Carlo. They got a first and Minton for Brandon Carlo. Um he’s got to work on his face offs though. Jesus man. Yeah. Yeah. It’s like it’s really bad. But the goalending has been solid. Everything that we were complaining about last year, they’ve been better. But it’s only two games. It’s only two games. I’m I’m in your boat. But again, we have we have to do this show and two games are two games. Um I think it’s interesting like I was thinking about it walking out of the garden last night. I was like, have my expectations changed for them? No, they have not. It’s been two nice games. They’ve had, as you said, they’ve had some good, which we’ll get into, and they’ve had some bad, which we’ll get into. That said, like I don’t think they’re going to suck. I think the whole like they’re going to be in it for McKenna, I don’t think it’s going to happen. I think they are, you know, Jeremy Swayman should be too good to let that happen. The defense should be too good to let that happen. And through two games, like that’s been the case. Like Swayman was fantastic against Washington. Corposalo stepped up against Chicago. I know it’s Chicago. They will be likely in the running for Gavin McKenna. But like that’s still a good win. I mean, Chicago had their chances. I think you see it in the game itself that like Chicago is probably more talented or at least has more younger and skilled players and quicker players, but that said, like the as you said, the way they’re structured, they they’re not going to stink. They’re going to be in and around it. I mean, you know, Connor always says this at the deadline, they were two points out of a wild card spot last year. Like, they’re they’re not going to suck. They’re not going to suck. I just don’t think they’re a playoff team. I don’t think they have enough talent to do that. Um, and I think the rest of the Atlantic is a little too good in terms of like the Senators and Canadians, but I don’t know, through two games, like it’s hard not to be happy with that, you know, like what else what else can you ask for through two games? Yeah, the the Atlantic seems to be a little bit wider open than we’ve seen it in a real long time. I I still think Florida’s, you know, they’ll be fine. They’ll get in. Yeah, but those that’s two huge injuries to overcome. Huge. um that Marshian goal last night, Jesus Murphy. Like I don’t even like Yeah, like that was dirty. But I’m I’m still okay that he’s been moved. I’m still okay with the Bruins trajectory. I do laugh that we have a second line or as I like to call it, the um not going to be here after the trade deadline line. Um it’s a very interesting line um to say the least. It’s the uh hey play very good so we can move you for assets because I still think the Bruins regardless of where they are in the standing unless they’re one two or three in their division they’re going to be sellers at the deadline because I think they need to be and I agree with you. I think they’re a wild card team at best but they could surprise us. Um it’s it’s pretty hilarious. Um, I was listening to 32 thoughts the podcast and this morning uh on at the gym and my and Elliot Freeman was talking about how he originally was picking the Bruins as that surprise team. And I do think we’re all underestimating them. Um, 100%. Because I agree with Connor, like think about it. They were so close to being a playoff team and then they dumped everybody and then they were what they were. But they still have David Pastnack who um if the Bruins get into the playoffs, he’ll be on the heart trophy nomination. I I tweeted this. People were like people were like, “Oh, it’s after one game.” And I said, “No, like if they get in, if they get into the playoffs, David Posnock will have had to have had a heart trophy like season or a guy like Makavoy has a Norris type season or Swayman has a VZNA type se like if the other way around it.” Yeah. Yeah. Like that those three guys are going to have to be at the top of their games to get in the playoffs. And by the way, if they did get in the playoffs, Marco Sturm is probably the Jack Adams winner or at least a top three guy. I I’ll say this right now. If someone wants to go look at the history of the Jack Adams, I hope to God he doesn’t because it’s literally especially in Boston. You win the Jack Adams, you get fired the next year. It just it is what it is every time. Bruce, Clo, and Montgomery. It just only happens. Like that’s just how I’m pretty sure Clo. But I know Bruce the Kiss of Death. Yeah, you get that. You get that. It’s like I don’t want this. You I It’s like the It’s like winning the um It’s like winning the the president’s trophy. Like I don’t want this. You can Someone else can take this. I I don’t need it. But you’re going to need those guys to be those guys. And in game one against the Caps, they were those guys. Like Makavoy was phenomenal. Swayman was phenomenal. Posternok was phenomenal with three points. Then you get to game two and it’s the depth scoring. Like that’s to me that’s my that is the reason in my mind they don’t get in the playoffs. The depth scoring is in my mind is non-existent. It was not non-existent on Thursday night. Mikey ACont was great. Tanner Jano was I really like him. Like I really like it. Like no just picked up the garbage and I’m not saying it was bad, but EC Mott did everything there. Yes, the Eagle turns to the slot. You know what prediction I love? I I was reading Connor’s predictions on Boston.com and I disagree with Connor and his prediction that they’re going to make the playoffs. That’s okay. It’ll be close. But you know what prediction I loved? Mikey Acimont as the seventh player award winner at the end of the year. I could like that’s I could easily see it. Go to his he asked it. That was my reply for the seventh player award. It’s the easy It’s the I don’t see how fans don’t love this kid. The way he plays the game, and I’m not saying he’s Brad Marshian cuz he doesn’t have the skill, but the way he plays the game is a lot of reminiscence of how Marianne mucks it up in the corner, just comes out like he’s not the biggest guy, but he’ll go in the corner with two huge dudes and all of a sudden he’s the guy coming out with the puck. It’s he’s a lot of energy. I would think that the Bruins want to turn him if they could turn him into their their penalty killer guy that can get short-handed goals. Oh my goodness. They have they’ve got they’ve got to make him that guy. But that’s that’s one of the things like I look at their special teams and I’m like they don’t have anybody that can be an offensive weapon besides Elias Lynholm on the PK. No one. So you got Acim Man as Marian, you have Mitten as Berseron. You’re well decent. I did not say that. But um I I’m just trying to figure out a way to compare EC his style. He doesn’t have the offensive vacuum that uh Marian has at all. No, of course not. But Marian like early early early early in his Yeah. And I just don’t think he has the ceiling. He’s not getting there. But I do as a bottom six guy, I think he was the best signing this off season. I could see it. I could see it. I mean, he’s younger, too. And I think like it’s funny. I thought through the summer I thought okay he’ll be on your fourth line. You can pencil him in him Castelik and Carali and they can beat the hell out of other teams and you can figure out your third line winger. One of them is going to be Jano. But through camp it’s like no AC has a little offensive touch to him that I think is perfect for that third line where it’s like he can go up against other teams top lines. He’s tough enough to do it. He’s as you said he he will win his board battles. He’s fearless. But as we saw on that uh Jano goal on Thursday, like he’s got a little offensive touch and that was again good skating, good like a good eagle turn which is not easy to do to the slot with defenders on him and all over him gets to a high danger area and creates a creates a goal and it’s like okay that’s legit like I agree with you and I think that’s why like seeing the depth scoring uh show up the way it did and Arvidson had I don’t know why everybody hated him so much. Well, I think he was underwhelming in the preseason. That was Or you’re saying pre when they made the trade. Well, yeah, even that like worry in Edmonton. Now I watch him skate and I’m like I don’t know, man. Like I I haven’t seen him play in a playoff, but I’m like he’s got wheels. For his age, he has got wheels. He’s the one one of the only guys on that team who has super straight speed. Like they are slow. The Bruins are a slow team. They are big bad Bruins. Heavy and slow. We’ll get into that. He’s got speed and that goal was all speed and I know L Shunoff should have taken the body with middle stat in front. Whatever. Still a phenomenal play by Arvidson and it’s that speed and I think that you need a dose of that. Now, do I think they keep do I think they extend him? No. I think he is dealt at the deadline first round pick. But that’s what we want. First round pick. I I’ve been saying this like I think a guy like Arvidson if he continue if he plays like he did for the majority of the time on Thursday there’s gonna people are desperate at the deadline. I say the same thing about Andrew Peak, who Fluto thinks Fluto predicted what he he would get resigned and and maybe he does, but I also think a team could be desperate enough at the deadline to give up a good amount for him because think about it. You have Yoki Haru signed unless Peak really emerges. Is he your top four right shot defenseman of the future? I haven’t seen it yet. I’ve not seen it. So like I could see him getting legit pieces at the deadline, too. We’re getting way ahead of ourselves at the deadline. Way ahead. We we’re going to March yet, but but you’re not you’re not wrong. Like I I look at that second line and I I I love the fact that Casey Middlestat got on the board early in the season. I think that’s what he needed for his confidence. And I think Casey Middlestat is a very creative player. Um I actually like the way he can slow down the game. It was interesting that he gets his first goal by being the guy being netfront presence, which that’s not his game, but he went to the net because he saw the opportunity. It was a very smart play. I like I I actually like the line, but they’re slow unless Ardson. It’s like Arvidson has to pretty much put them on their back, but it’s also game two, so there’s going to be a lot of things happening. Everything we say is this two games into the season. Exactly. It’s It’s not like the Bruins are a Stanley Cup contender. Um they’re far from it. But I did I have liked what we’ve seen from the top six, which I thought I was gonna be scared. Like I really think Elias Lynholm has played extremely well and if you actually look back to last season um right after the uh form nations Lynholm plays amazing for the remainder of the year and he’s continued that play. Um I joked on my show that he’s going to get 20 goals this year. I think he might actually do it. I had him at 60 points in predictions because it’s like all right power play is going to be better. He’s going to he should be better. you’re playing with David Posterno, Morgan Geeky as well. Like that should be there. And I think now there’s a caveat to him starting out hot. He started out hot last year and he said that last night. Lindol was like, you know, well, I had I had, you know, two goals in three games to open the season last year. I think he had like five points in the first three games, memory serves, and then he got really cold. So, it’s maintaining that. But again, just going off two games, he’s been good. Like, he’s been good. Now, one thing that does worry me a little minor worry, not huge worry, but a little minor worry, just like, you know, two games in, there have been a couple times on the power play where Morgan Geeki has got the puck in a one-time spot and either fumbled it or shot it wide or just doesn’t seem ready to shoot it. And I don’t know, that’s just a little observation I’ve had where I’m like, huh, they’re little signs that like, because that’s been a big question. What is Kiki going to be this year? Is he going to take a step forward? Is he going to maintain the same production as he did last year? is going to take a step back. Those are my those have been my moments where I’m like, “Oh, maybe he does take a step back.” But to your point, even if Kiki takes a step back, if Lindol takes a step forward, that line probably continues to just hum the way it did the last couple months of last year. Well, yeah. And also with the power play this year, they’re not just funneling the puck to David Pastnack over and over and over again. They’re moving there. There’s a lot more movement on the power play this year. They’re they’re uh utilizing the point to have a netfront presence especially with uh PP2 but like they’re actually almost using pasta as a screen and I think it’s just geeky having to get comfortable with it that he last year mindset is mindset is a hard thing to change. So mindset last year was feed feed feed David Pastasternak. And now when they go out there, he’s got to be like, “Oh my god, the puck’s actually coming to me.” Like David Passnak, I’ll I’ll say this to him blue in the face. He’s one of the most underrated passers in the league. And some of those passes that guy does is just disgusting. I think Geeky will be fine. I think he’s going to get his 30 plus goals this year. I I thought he played strong in the preseason. Um he’s looked well out there. He’s skating well. Chances will come being snake bitten. they it’s almost like they need to if there’s like an empty net just find Geeky and just give him the puck just so he can get it off his back and just get it out of the way right off the beginning of the year. Um, but with Lynholm, I think the system is this system that they’re playing under Sturm suits him. And I also think last year, I try and put a caveat on last season because I think Jim Montgomery, I don’t know, man, everything was in a blender 24 hours a day. So, like by game five, we’d already seen Lynholm on three different lines. Like, consistency is the key. And I think Sturm is going to bring that this year. Seems the guys are bought into the system. I have seen some lapses. It’s it seems the neutral zone they’ve been phenomenal in keeping with the system. They have some times sometimes that the man-on-man they’re having an issue in their own zone where it’s almost like they forget and a defenseman like skates off and or a forward skates off and someone chases when they shouldn’t and then all of a sudden they don’t know what to do and it causes an offensive chance. Um I Bard’s goal like Jesus Zidorov, God bless him. Still going in the penalty box, but um had a great like second half of that game. What I thought on that first goal and in my discord, someone disagreed with me, but that’s fine. Everybody can disagree. It’s just when I watch the play, instead of separating to get the puck, he just separates. Yes, he takes the man out of the play, but that man’s still able to funnel the puck around the boards and Bernard’s able to just sneak in and of all people to let just sneak in. Corposel has zero chance on that shot. It’s no disgusting shot. He’s got one of the fastest releases in the game. But Zidorov, if he plays for the puck, separates for puck, holds man, still separates from the puck, puts the puck going the other way, that man still is able to move the puck. So, it directly leads to the goal. It’s very interesting the the breakdown as soon as they have a minor breakdown. If you look and like freeze that goal, everybody’s off in the one corner. Like the whole team is over there because one person takes out of the play and they almost get a little lost. I think as the the season goes, we’re going to see a lot more two-1 hockey games and they’re either going to win them or they’re going to lose them. But having David Pastnack on that team, you might actually end up winning them because he’s clutch. We know this. He is the whole narrative that he’s not. I’ve always laughed at. That’s weird. He’s a game seven guy. Like he’s literally that guy. The Leafs hate him for a reason. I live in Toronto and they hate him here. Yeah. I’m not surprised they do. It’s interesting though on that Bernard goal too. Is Zidorf was also the one that turned the puck over. Like he had the puck behind his own net. Ton of time. Just couldn’t decide what to do and gave it up and had a chance to get it back. Yes. Yeah. I know exactly the play. He nailed the guy behind the net. I completely I remember that exactly. An interesting thing about the neutral zone, people were like, are they going to do a a 131? They do sort of a one4 and the four the two guys on the outside that are stacked at the blue line will push forward as they come through the neutral zone. And they have stifled teams a little bit at that which I think is good. And the other thing is back to like the Montgomery comment, the identity, you think back to last year, they started out as a team that was shot quality. Uh they were uh uh uh that was their thing, you know, it was more of a skilled game. Find the best scoring chance. This is not the lineup to do that. We said this till we were blue in the face last year. This is not the roster to find the best possible scoring catch. Just get the puck on net. And Sturm last night was talking and was like, I hate the guys in the first period were pissing me off because um they weren’t, you know, they’re looking for the best. They just wanted to pass it. I was like, you shoot the puck. And that’s what they were later in the game. And I think that’s when this roster is at its best playing really hard-nosed defensive hockey and strict which helps for a guy like Elias Lindholm and just getting pucks on net because they don’t outside of Posrock they don’t have the skill to you know be Kale Mar and the Colorado Avalanche or the Vegas Golden Knights like they don’t have that. So embrace what you are which is you just said a two-1 team. Yeah a two-1 they are you got to grind the living. They’re going to win by grinding and that’s not a bad thing. Um I know I’m probably going to complain about it because I I love watching some fast hockey. So will I. You know what? I I’ll just watch I’ll watch the West Coast games after the Bruins. I’ll go watch the Vegas Golden Knights. Gez, I’ll watch I turned that game on last night with San Jose after. I was like, I’m going to watch something else. Scorv, if you do not have Pavdorv in your hockey pool, which is hilarious. So many hockey pools that I was in, I was able to get him in like the eighth round, the ninth round. I’m just like, do people not know who this guy is? is he got 30 plus goals last year. He’s probably going to get 50 this year. Anyways, that’s Vegas. But Boston, you’re right. They only have the one skilled guy and I think Connor um Morgan Geeky. Gez, I always say Connor because of his brother. But yeah, Morgan Geeky is next on that list with regards to skill. I think even on that overtime winner, um Minton shot first. He decides to take the shot. Beautiful shot. I I love it for the kid. Um he is um he seems to have already been secretly become Marco Sturm’s teachers pet. Like Sturm loves him and in good reason. Uh but like somebody call up Berseron and teach his kid how to take a face off. Like please. Um it’s really bad. Like oh I’m just watching his effort and I’m just like how is it that you do everything so well? And it’s not only when he even loses the draw. He doesn’t even take the man when he loses the draw. It’s like he loses it before the puck even drops and he’s like already knows it. So maybe it’s in his head. But I think even on that play, he takes a shot and scores and the goalie for Chicago was playing the shot. Morgan, if he sends it over to Morgan Geeky, Geeky scoring there, but he still saw that little tiny on the short side and he still gets it in, which I was impressed. It was it was a nice play in the overtime. Confident player, too. Young guy, you’re coming down to two1 in overtime. A lot of guys are just passing that off just cuz like I don’t want to be the one to take that shot. And he, as you said, he snipes it. Like that was it. And by the way, he won the the board battle down in his own zone. Took it all the way up. Mitten’s interesting because I think Mitten does, as you said, everything right. Like supports, plays well, and he fits. And I think for a guy like Sturm, the way that they’re going to play, that’s a young guy who is going to fit in this lineup and he is going to get a lot of minutes. I remember in Fluto’s prediction story, he says, you know, Mitten is going to end up playing a lot more than Middlestat. And we might see that as the season goes along because Mitten plays Sturm’s game. like trust. Smitten embodies it in a way that like not a lot of other guys do. And he really like I think the way Sterm wants the Bruins to play is the way the Bruins have historically wanted to play, which is they’re not historically they’ve not been a skilled team. I mean, let’s go back to 2011. Wasn’t a ton of skill on that team. It was a lot of grinding. It was a lot of, you know, shot volume type stuff. Hard hard-nosed defense, good goalending. Not saying they’re 2011. Take that out of context. Yeah, you don’t want the coming at you for that one, please. But um I think that’s encouraging. I want to get into some more stuff. I want to get into u the scrums against the Blackhawks. Hampus Lindholm. I want to get into that. I want to get into the goalending. But first, our friends over at Prize Pick. This episode’s brought to you by Prize Pick. You and I make decisions every day, but on Prize Picks, being right can get you paid. Don’t miss any of the excitement this season on Prize Picks, where it’s good to be right. David Posternok is a great one to take. I like him. More points. I like Jeremy Swayman. More saves. This team gets outshot. Swayman more saves on Saturday. I like prize pick. Simple to play. Just pick more or less on two to six player stat projections. And if you get your picks right, you could cash in. Price pick. They also invented the flex play, which I love. Means you can still cash out if your lineup isn’t perfect. You can double your money even if one of your picks doesn’t hit. Download the app today and use code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That’s code cls to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup prize picks. It’s good to be right. So, the scrums against the Blackhawks. Um, it happens twice. Corali’s just beating the bag out of Lehunov on the ice. I thought for less went like limp for a second. I was like, did he just like knock him out? Like, is this like an oric Thornton situation? Thankfully, it was not. Um, I asked Lynome after the game like, “Does that kind of galvanize the group a little bit?” and he said yes. And I do think it’s I mean it’s a little encouraging. I I I ranted after um Washington the game against Washington that the whole idea of a protector is overrated. You saw that with Tom Wilson like pulverizing Mason Lai Castlick goes to fight him and doesn’t fight him and then continues playing the exact same way. Like I I but bringing that physicality getting in those scrums can help bring them together a little bit. And I think with the way this roster is constructed, you have a lot of those guys in the bottom six. Yeah. And it it it’s very reminiscent of the 2019 Bruins that they were willing to muck it up after pretty much all the plays and they stuck up for their guys. I thought last year and the year before that, even in their, you know, the amazing season, they didn’t stick up for each other that much at all. No, it was really weird. Um, so I’m happy to see it, but they need to understand that if they continue it, it’s just gonna like Burns going to the box. this PK is not going to be perfect. So, stop testing them. Like, that’s what I don’t understand. I love the mucking up. I I think there’s a time and place for it. And if someone’s crowding your crease, going near your goalie, the refs are going to let it go. But if you do stupid stuff, the refs are going to call it. And when you do stuff like that, you’re going on the PK. And that’s when you do the opposite, right? Instead of lifting up your teammates and saying, “Hey, this guy’s sticking up for us. We love this.” It’s oh man, like why did it go too far? Now we’re on the PK and we’ve got to do something about it. So now everybody’s not playing again because I do think the Bruins are going to be a better hockey club because they’re a four-line team and they need to have that engine going at all times because as much as their shifts were kind of terrible um in the third period there for some reason. Um they’ve been better under Sturm that I thought than Montgomery. I thought Montgomery had a I don’t know what it was. They were really bad at line changes under him. There’s too many men. Remember that? Oh Jesus, it’s too much. It’s the Boston Bruins penalty. Um the fact that Tai Anderson hasn’t had to put a tweet out of a last minute goal scorer so far. Like Jesus, it’s been phenomenal. But and usually those are on bad line changes. They did have a bad line change last night that cost him a goal, that third goal. Yep. It’s just a bad line change. But I do think they need to make sure that every team that comes into their house knows that they’re going to pay the price if they go to the blue paint. It’s just you have to you have to play that way. And if they’re in the corner, run them through the boards. That’s just the way it should be. Like if if the puck’s in there and you’re pay you’re playing for a loose puck, kill that man. Behind the net, watch yourself. But in the corner, take him out. It’s just what you need to do. But get the puck for God’s sakes. Kill that man. I love that. Yeah, I know. That’s just I’ I’ve got my coach. I agree. I always tell my kids, put them through the boards. Put them through the boards. And when you’re a little kid, you learn protect the house. This is your house. Little box in front of the net, someone comes in it, you’re pissed off. That’s what that’s what they need to be. Um, piss and vinegar. Piss and vinegar. Nearly said it in the opening season press conference. We’ve seen it. They have played with more piss and vinegar. There have been downsides to it. They they got fortunate on the scrum with that started with Zidorov. It was just even and they stayed on the penalty kill anyway, but it, you know, was two both guys went stayed. Um, but then you have, you know, I don’t know if this is piss and vinegar or undisiplined, but you have Posternok with that slash. You have Makavoy later in the game with the interference penalty, you know, kicking the guy’s stick. I think it was it was Bard maybe. Um, that’s undisiplined. They cancel each other out as they battle for the captaincy. I guess that just sort of evens the playing field. Um, there’s downsides to it. Not to mention the fact with Piss and Vinegar that typically those players a little slower. They’re very slow and they’re not as skilled and they’re not very skilled. So, unless you’re Mikey Eim, ACT’s the the that’s the kind of guy want that guy. That’s the kind you want. Um, but your thoughts on the whole piss and vinegar thing and the way they’re trying to go. Uh, well, it was it’s very telling when they had that press conference and they said that and we can all watch Behind the Bee and see where it even got them. I’m very curious to know when they said on Behind the Bee like, “Oh, we were going for this and we only had one other option.” I will I will stop you. I don’t know if you saw they had someone I forget who it was had a hockey reference page up and there was a Canucks logo. Yeah, it was Brock Besser like Brock Besser had it was Evan Gold. Yes, it was it was Evan Gold who had it up. But I’ve been saying that for years. They were in on him during the right before the pandemic and they really wanted him. But saying that you were looking for offense because you knew you needed goals and the only option was Brock Besser, that doesn’t even make any sense to me. What else were you in on? There was no way you were in on Mner. He’s not coming to Boston. So to say it tried I tried to even say it in the press conference. I felt that was a little disingenuous. Yeah, you went for Besser. Okay. And Besser came off the board real quick. U he wasn’t even on the board. Let’s just say like 10 two seconds into the trade. I mean free agent frenzy is gone or or candidate as we like to call it here in Canada. But um it I I just thought that was disingenuous. I I understand Celius has wanted for years to them to be the big bad Bruins. I still um I’m doing a video later and it’s gonna be big bad Bruins question mark because I just are they um make sure to go check out Bruins die hards by the way. Go subscribe. Yes, thank you. Um because I just it’s only two games because you can only do it for so long. They they mentioned they wanted to be a young team. They only have two kids under the age of 25 on the team. That’s Mason Lorai and Fraser Mitten. They have not a young team at all. That’s the opposite of what they are. But with the way they’ve constructed this roster, it’s the only way they can play and win. And with the way Marco Sturm style is of a defensive structure and shot generation, it works. Um, I’ll be the first to admit I thought a lot of the signings this summer I was like, what are you thinking? I still Tanner, you know, I’m over with. Like I just whatever. um talking about like how super excited they were. Like watching that on behind the be I’m just like you’re acting like you just signed like Mitch Martner here. Like what’s going on guys? Of course he’s excited. You got a 5-year deal with a ton of money after not a great year. Like I’d be stoked too. His wife like oh we haven’t had any. We’ve always been as uncertain his whole career. It’s the first time we have certainty. I hope. And I’m just like this doesn’t sound like the guy that you’re losing your big smiles over Sweens when you got when you signed him. But whatever. To each their own. Um, the bottom six is strong on this Boston Bruins team and if they can continue to wear down hockey teams and Pastnack can, you know, put this team on his back and Makavoy can stay healthy and Lynholm can stay healthy and Swayman plays like he did in the first game, they’re going to be fine. They’re going to be at least in every game. And I think that’s what Marco Sturm wants. They wants the team to be in on every single game and never give up. And I haven’t seen that yet. So, as much as it pains me to say it, they are a piss and vinegar hockey team and it is what it is. And that’s not a bad thing. It just pains me to agree with what Cam said on the on the thing. And it’s not because I I I can’t stand. It’s just a lot of his thinking I I feel is very archaic sometimes the way the game is. It’s old school. It’s old school. And and I I that’s where like the whole protector thing kind of went to hell on uh against the Caps where it’s like this just whole like oh, they’re going to protect him. No, that’s still going to happen. The Panthers have cut right through that. The Panthers have proven that you can be the aggressor and you don’t have to stand. You don’t have to drop the gloves immediately. You can just take the power play. Like score the goal. And I I think that’s the the right mentality to have. Um I don’t know. I I agree with you. Piss and vinegar type thing. Like if they were if they tried to be a skilled team, they would fail. They’d be 100%. Like that’s if they were if they were not doing what they’re doing in the defensive zone, they’re screwed. Like they’re not they’re not a skilled team. And that’s why I like the direction they are headed in right now. I don’t like I agree with you. I don’t like I didn’t like the signings over the summer, but if they were trying to play a shot quality game, I’d be like, “What are you doing?” Cuz I did this. We said this last year. What are you doing? Um, you just mentioned Hus Lindol. Lindol goes down in the first period. I don’t think anyone’s found the play where if there was a play, I think Scott Mclofflin said that he didn’t he went back and watched stuff. He didn’t see it. Did you see something different? Yeah. So there’s a play where he I I was like dissecting the living daylights out of this, but this might not be it, but it’s his last shift. So he goes along the half wall and he blocks the puck from coming out of the zone. So Chicago there, Bruins are pressure in the offensive zone. Hampus goes along the left boards. Goes along the half wall and all he does is post up along the boards and the puck hits him in the side. Comes up along the boards. He stops the play. He takes the puck and he passes it off. He does like a little shimmy after of like not testing his leg, just whatever. I think he I think and this is just my opinion. He got a stinger. He got worried and it was precautionary why they took him out of the game. I think he took a shot to the side of the leg instead of you have padding on your knees, but every player is going to barely have padding on the side just because sides is where it hurts. They custom their equipment. They do all these crazy things. If you saw my equipment that I wear underneath when I play hockey, you’ll be like, “Why don’t you die every time you go on the ice?” Cuz I’m just like barely wearing anything. But it’s cuz that’s just the way we we play. So my thought is he takes a shot and it hits him. If you look, he’s up on the wall and the puck comes up and hits him in the side. And at first I thought it was nothing. And then when he never came back and I was like, “Well, my guess is he got a stinger on the side.” They took precaution. They were like, “Oh my god, maybe he got swollen a little bit.” and they thought, “Holy God, this could be his kneecap. We got to take him out of the game.” And it sounds like it’s definitely not and he’s not going to miss a beat. It doesn’t sound like he’s even going to miss a game. Yeah. It’s funny. Stern was asked after the game on on Thursday against the Blackhawks and he was like, you know, you know, it was asked about do you have to kind of be precaution with him? Like do you do you want to arrest him at times? And Sturm said like that is something they’re considering. Um I agree. I haven’t seen the play. I have not gone and seen that play. So, I will when we’re done recording this cuz I am curious. Um, did he break his left kneecap or his right kneecap? Cuz it hits him on his left leg. Oh god. I forget which leg it was. It was that shot block and I see it in my head. I can’t I don’t remember which leg it was, but I think it was the left cuz he hits it and goes down and goes into the spin. I think it’s the left. Anyways, but that’s he gets hit on the left knee and it looks more of like a stinger. We all get them playing hockey. It is what it is. We do. We do. Um, and I think for him, you know, mental, you know, whenever there’s a big injury like that mentally, you need some time to come back. Like you see it with guys who tear their ACL or their Achilles basketball especially, you’re going through it with Jason Tatum now. Like there are going to be times when you’re jumping and when you land, you’re like, I hope my Achilles doesn’t burst. Like that happens. And I think for Lindholm, it’s the same thing where it’s like, you know, he likely felt that pain and was like, oh shoot, here we go again. And, you know, they took him out as a precautionary thing. So hopefully that’s what it is. Hopefully that’s what they should do to be totally honest. Um Hampus Lynhome I think it’s very interesting. I can’t remember who it was. It was either Scott, Connor, or Tai. Can’t remember. All three. If you’re not following them on Twitter, please do so. One of them pointed out the amount of times that uh Hampus Lhome was only getting uh defensive zone starts, which is very interesting. Um he’s that’s how they’re utilizing him. I do think he’s a extremely well two-way player and I I do think the Bruins don’t lose Hampus Lynholm last year and they they don’t they’re not the team they wouldn’t have probably Marshian I’d still be here 100% honest. Yeah, I’m watching the Hampton Lindome play to see what leg it was. I I’m looking away. That’s okay. But yeah, I agree. Like if you don’t lose Lindholm last year Yeah, you’re probably right. like like the Bruins are playing well. Like I wanna I want to say this right now. So far in two games, I have been pleasantly surprised and I shouldn’t be. All things considered, it’s almost like Marco Sturm is like the perfect fit. He He is literally the what you said before, he’s the epitome of what the Bruins want to be. He’s the identity of the Boston Bruins. This is how you want to play. This is how you should play the game. And they’re playing it so far. They’re sticking to the system. They make mistakes and it costs turnovers, but they’re coming back and they’re playing. They’re being hard to play against. If they can be consistent all year and play this way, Connor is right. They get in the playoffs. If they falter and you know some players don’t play above or play the expectations, then they don’t. But I think it goes down to goending. Hamplhome, Charlie Makavoy, Geeky, and Pasternac. You need to have, as you said before, trophy winning seasons for these guys. And heck, I thought Corposalo, the third goal, probably should have had, but he w he was the reason they they won in overtime. He played and I think Corpusal is one of the worst statistic goalies in the NHL over the past 10 years, and I I think the stats back me up, but he played great in overtime. So far, the goalending has been good, the defense has been good, and the bottom six has helped this team. Scar downs. That fourth line’s drawing penalties like crazy. And I I agree with you and and and I think on the goalending part of it, like I think that the deck is stacked this year for Swayman to have a good year. I know that they you know they are struggling offensively, but he had a full training camp coming off a bad year last year. That clearly motivated him. Had a good Worlds back earlier right after the season. They went 7-0. And I think you know there’s a lot of motivation there. They’re better defensively. You know, Has Lindelm should be back. Charlie Makavoy’s here. Zidorf’s on your third pair. Like, and Mason Loai has played phenomenal for two games. I don’t care. Lori Hayden, go in there. Mason Loai has been great the last two games. He’s better than I’ve ever seen him play. Yes, he’s been responsible. And that’s clearly a project for them, that coaching staff, of how to fix what went wrong last year. And I think one of the things that went wrong for him last year was come the last three months, he’s playing really hard minutes all the time because Makavoy is not there and Lindol’s not there and he doesn’t have Makavoy to play off of. And I still think late in games if you’re defending a lead, you’re probably not. And as a Dzone draw, Laura is not on the ice. Like I that’s no question. Makavoy, Zidorov, or Lynholm, those are the only choices. Those are your three. Those are your three. And but still, I mean, having Makavoy there throughout most of that game is a helpful thing for a young guy like Lai. So, I agree. And again, the I think the deck is stacked for Swayman to have a really good year. I do. I think and and by the way, if Corposalo can play as well as he did uh against the Hawks, like that helps Swayman, too, because you’re going to get to play Corposalo more. Sway will be a little bit more rested. We’ve seen Swayman through his young careers played better when rested. That’s good. I mean, again, through two games, like it’s been encouraging and I don’t think anything has any like I don’t think there’s anything that’s really surprised me in a negative way through two games. No, I haven’t seen a guy where I’m like, “Oh my god, he’s been terrible.” I haven’t seen a guy where I’m like And I also have noticed that if a guy makes a mistake, they’re doing a very good job of making up for it. Like they’ll have the next shift is they’re they’re not getting down on themselves. It’s a lot a lot of times the body language on the bench last year was a lot of down heads, looking down, more up there. These guys are into the games and I do think even though they’re getting outshot most they just they’re they’re generating a lot of shots against they’re not bad shots if you actually look they’re doing a very good job of keeping teams to the perimeter and it’s almost like frustrating teams. So they’re generating a lot of shots from the point which Swayman and and Corposello can see. If your goal I think if your goalie can see the puck they’re going to save the puck just plain and simple. like on the second goal on Corposal last night. At first when I first saw it, I was like, “Oh man, you need to have that.” Then when they show the replay, it goes off to no stick skate and I I know the way a goalie plays and they’re very positioned in there, have their angles. Corposal sometimes can be a little bit more off his angles, but it doesn’t hit Jano. He’s got that safe. He overcommitted, but that’s fine because he’s playing a little clinched. He’s a little clinched in his butt when he’s out on the ice right now, and he needs to be because he didn’t have a good year. It’s It’s funny. People were like, “Oh, Corpusalo played better than Swayman.” I’m like, “That is not the award you want to give to anybody last year.” That Corpusalo, who didn’t have a good year, played better than the goalie that had a really bad year. Shocker. I I just They can’t win unless the goalending continues to be as consistent as they have been after two games. But again, they had one test against the Washington Capitals, which I consider a test. You know, Ovuchetkin looked invisible out there. Tom Wilson seemed to have his way. And it’s interesting though, Brad Marian, all of a sudden Tom Wilson can run a muck on the Boston Bruins. Chicago Blackhawks, they’re a very fast, speedy team that generates a ton of shots and they’ve got some lethal weapons. They’re not a good team, but I think the Boston Bruins have some tests in front of them. No question. They need to get points early. Yes. Yes. Um before we get into sort of the slate ahead real quick, uh make sure to subscribe to Burns Ringside on YouTube. Always have a lot of stuff coming, podcasts, analysis, all that great stuff. uh live streams and if you don’t like watching us and you just like listening, you can subscribe wherever we get your podcast from. Apple, Spotify, Podbean, wherever it is. And then there’s lots of other great stuff over at CLNS as well. Patriots Press Pass, Celtics All Access. Those two are cooking. So go subscribe over there. Uh yeah, coming up Buffalo Saturday, Tampa Monday, and then you go on the road, you go out west, Vegas, Colorado, Utah, then you return home with Brad Marshan and the Panthers. So, that’s a tough that’s a tough slate. We’re gonna see what this team is made of. Up. Yep. I’m excited for that. So, the Buffalo Sabres could be that sneaky game that you you don’t show up for and you lose, which is Oh, man. That that would suck. You want to beat the Buffalo Sabres. Well, there people I think it was Evolving Hockey had the Sabres like two in the in the Atlantic to start the year. I don’t agree with that. as someone who gets to watch a lot of Sabres games because their uh their local broadcasts come on RTV. They stink. Um like I got they stink. Um they got goalending issues. They got defense issues. Sorry, they don’t have defense issues. They have inconsistency issues, I think, is the best way to describe the the Buffalo Sabres. I get it. They have a ton of talent, but I think there a lot of their issues have to do with their management and the way the organization is run. It’s just it’s more easier to say the a player gets drafted by Buffalo will be better as long as he gets traded. But um because it’s just the proof is in the pudding. They trade the guy. He’s going to be great. So what’s his name? Um he got traded out and went to Utah. He’s going to have a great year. It just has to because he was in Buffalo. Yeah. He’s gonna It’s just automatically going to happen. I think the Bruins are better than the Buffalo Sabres. I think crazy enough that that Ottawa Senators come back last night. Gesh, that scared the living daylights out of me because at the beginning of the game, a friend of mine texted me. He was like, “Ah, Tampa’s a wagon.” I was like, “I don’t know, man. It’s only the first period.” And then sure enough, Ottawa comes back to win that hockey game. I think the Atlantic is going to be a scrappy division. And I think that the Bruins need to win against the Buffalo. I I can’t believe I’m saying need to win this early in the season, but they need to beat Buffalo and they need to beat Tampa. They can have a stinker against the Florida Panthers, but they need to beat teams that they need to beat. Like, it’s does that sound make any sense? Like, you need Sabres. And I think you need to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning because that’s one of those prove everybody else in the league. We’re we we’re not this team everybody thinks we are. Agreed. The Sabres have way more talent on paper, but they’re not a better team. They don’t play as a team better than you. You you have the antidote to that. And I think when you look at the Atlantic, if we’re going to play the positive side of things, like the piss and vinegary game that the Bruins have is sort of the counter to a highly skilled team like the Sabres or, you know, a highly skilled team like the Lightning. Getting ahead of ourselves with this, but I think the these games coming up are going to be a good test. And then you go on the road. Then you go up to Vegas and Colorado and Utah who everyone Utah everyone thinks Utah is going to be like a a Stanley Cup team or a Stanley Cup dark horse which I don’t I’m not following that yet. I’ll give them a playoff birth but not that. You know what’s another take I have Court and we’ll do this real quick before we go. Could the Avalanche be a retooling team? Like hear me out on this. So Nas’s future is sort of up in the air. We’ll see what they do with that. But like up front outside of McKinnon and Landisk Cog who has not played in a long time and like you have Brock Nelson and you have Nas obviously. Well, I’m getting to the back end like obviously trust me. You think I forget about Mar? I don’t know. He’s the greatest defenseman in the league. He’s are maybe ever but anyway. Oh jeez. We’re a Bruins podcast. Bobby or Okay. Just I know. I know. Um but you have to resign him. you got he’s going to de demand a lot of money and they don’t have much in net. I don’t know. I just wonder like are we overrating the Avalanche? That’s like my little take. No, I I don’t think we’re overrating because I think Nathan McKinnon is one of the greatest the best players in the league and Cal Mar is the best defenseman in the league. Uh and I think that goes a long way. I think Marty Nous um as much as there’s going to be and I’ll probably do a video like you know three months from now saying Niches to the Bruins, I don’t want him on the Bruins. Uh, I think really he has shown he has shown in two teams now that he is a problem to deal with regardless of what is on ice. Uh, I just don’t think the Bruins would want that guy. He seems to be an issue. Doesn’t want to sign in Carolina. Causes issues there. Goes to Colorado. Doesn’t want to sign in Colorado. What What does this guy want? He’s like the new He’s like the new Jubois. Like it’s just at some point who cares, dude. He’s amazing. Maybe, you know, Pastasternack can change him or something. But like, I don’t know. Nature’s is such a talent. And it’s either his agent’s a dick or he’s the dick because he seems to think he’s Carrill Capri off and he’s not. And that’s unfortunate. It happens with guys who, you know, think they’re something they’re not. And that’s just my opinion looking at from the outside. But I actually I have a a take might as well get off my chest that Malcolin and Crosby will get traded this year and they won’t go to the same team. Uh and Crosby will be a Florida Panther and I think it’s almost like a foregone conclusion at this point. Um not Colorado and that goes to your Colorado thing. I think Malcolm goes to the Los Angeles Kings and I think Colorado if they get the signs that Kakar isn’t sticking around, they’re gonna they’re gonna be a retool because Macar Yeah. I have a tough time believing that they would ever let that generational defenseman walk. Oh, I they’re not letting him go. It’s not their choice. I know. It’s They’ll give him whatever he wants. Yes. He could say, “I’m not coming back. I don’t want 100%.” I don’t think Nius is I don’t think he’s No, I don’t either. That’s why I don’t either. I don’t either. So, they’re gonna have to move him for something. And where are they going to move him to? You have to get something back. That’s why that was my prediction. The Bruins end up trading for Nas. Like, you get something back. What happened if Nius net you a goalie? Then you’re laughing cuz I think all Colorado needs is an actual goalie. It was It was interesting. I was having the conversation with someone and someone was like, um, they’re an Edmonton Oilers fan and I think Stuart Skinner is just not a Stanley Cup winning goalie. And I think you proved that in game one again this season. He’s just I don’t know. He’s just he’s not good. He’s average at best. He’s a backup goalie. He’s not a starter. Um, and the person was like, “You can win a Stanley Cup without a goalie.” I’m like, “Well, only one team has done it in the last 10 years, and that’s Colorado Avalanche.” They didn’t really have a goalie. They still won the cup. I still think you need a goalie. Um, Florida has won the five four out of the last five cups and they have Vascaloski and Barboski between Tampa and Florida because of Florida two you need a goalie to win and someone was like oh when Pittsburgh won. I was like well they still had Matt Murray who was playing great at the time and they had Mark Andre Flurry. I think Colorado’s issue was goalending and I think Edmonton’s issue is goalending and both teams need a goalie and both teams are not willing to sacrifice something that they have to get that goalie. I think Martin HS can get you one and I think Edmonton Oler screwed up by resigning Buchard when they should have traded him for a goalie. I agree. I also think with and this is the thing when people say like you know last year trade sway you know you you can you bring a guy up it’s like no like who are you going to bring up that’s the other thing but when you have when you have one of the top 10 goalies in the league uh oh the comments are going to kill you for that one. They can kill me. They can kill me. I believe it. But even top 15, just a good solid like starter, you’re at least you have the chance every year that that guy could get really hot and be good. It it’s it’s if you just bring up a random guy, most random guys that come in do not pan out. They’re not getting hot. It’s random. And it’s less than 20% of the time that actually happens where they go on a crazy run. Andrew in Ottawa. Literally thinking the same thing. Andrew Hammond. Like that is so rare. Or even like Jordan Bennington coming up with the Blues and just doing what he did. It is so rare. He’s a gamer. He’s a gamer. I’m with you. Especially after that Four Nations Championship. Like I’m with you. You’re welcome. Yeah. Thank you for that. Um but but like having a guy like Swayman or let the comments cuz you get crazy, a guy like Rasque, you’re in it every year. There’s that chance that they get hot in the playoffs, which Rask did a number of times. We’re not going to get into that here. We’re not going to give 2019 is not on Tukar Rask. I don’t care. I’ll be a Ty Anderson here. I’m a Tukar Rask. When he makes it into Hockey Hall of Fame or when he possibly gets his jersey retired, some of this fan base is going to have a hissy fit. It’s phenomenal. Task is getting into the hockey hall of fame. Like that’s almost like a foregone conclusion. He has international stats. He’s got it all. But I agree with you. Jeremy Swayman gives you a chance to win every night and he’s in the net. And if Corposelo plays like he did last night, Corposello gives you a chance to win. The Boston Bruins have always been a tight checking, good defense, and as long as the goalie sees it, they can win the game. But you can’t have like remember the year like the year before, oh, Brandon Busy. Yeah, Brandon Busy’s now on his third team in less than a year. You also have and then everybody this year was like, oh, Dietro DP Pro stunk in the preseason. He was no one even claimed him on waiverss. You know, everybody was talking this big game that he was going to get played. Jeremy Swayman is a good goalie. People need to just get over it. I I don’t know what it is about goalending here in Boston where people have to like lamb base the goalie. Like, think about it. Tim Thomas doesn’t win the Stanley Cup in 2011. He is a terrible goalie to the fan base. Yep. 100%. Cuz they were already getting on him before that. And think about it like this. Remember um the was it game two when he came way out of his net in overtime against the Canucks? Like if they lose game seven, Tim Thomas is looked at so different here. Oh my god, he’s never in position. And he’s look at the goals he gives up like completely. If Brad Marshan doesn’t make the bone headline change in game seven in 2019, Tukarasque is a god cuz he wins the K smite. Yeah, they were down one nothing at that point, weren’t they? Yeah. Yeah, it was a killer. I I also, you know, sorry, Bruce bad judgment on who to put in the put in not not in the lineup that I I didn’t like his lineup choices that game. I thought David Bakus is game seven. throw him in the lineup. What do you got to lose? Um it just it made way more sense to have him in the lineup. It I don’t know. Losing game five I think has lost him the series regardless. Um and I don’t think that was on the Bruins, but I just I look at 2019 and Tukaras literally stood on his head. Yes. Heck 2014 he he literally beat the Pittsburgh Penguins on his own. Like I did I I don’t understand the viteral towards this man. It makes no sense. It’s actually hilarious if Tukar Rasp was a different person because he just shrugs it off and doesn’t care. Like man, it would be hard. He shows his face in Boston so much and he’s just pretty much given everybody the middle finger who hates him and I love it. It’s great. It’s great. Anyway, Bruins are in a good spot. Two and0. They’re a good spot. You went ras on me and I had to I had You had to. No, I I I think people will enjoy that. Court, what can people look forward to from you over at Bruins dieards? 1. 2:19 Regarding Minten and face-offs: isn’t it pretty common or typical for under-24 NHL centers to struggle with face-offs?
Bedard is 38% on face-offs in his NHL career thus far. Celebrini is 48%. McDavid and Eichel were both in the low 40’s% during their first three NHL seasons.

I’m not necessarily trying to make excuses for Minten. Just saying that if Minten stays in the 42-45% range on face-offs this season, that is reasonably good for a 21 year-old center

  2. Kale Makar the "Best defenseman ever" is so far off base. #1) Bobby Orr #2) Ray Bourque and Brad Park #3) Denis Potvin #4) Larry Robinson then there's Victor Hedman, Zdeno Chara on and on. Kale Makar and then there are a bunch of others.

  3. Great conversation and good start to the season – yet NHL has never seen this lineup so we need to see how they respond to highlights of this new version of the Bruins.
B's adjusting to the NHL adjustments is going to be the real test

As well as staying healthy playing this physical style.

Be careful what you wish for on the 7th player award – it seems to be a curse. We trade those players after giving them the seventh player award!

Is it okay that we like our coaches, GM and trust them now?
Is it okay to talk about that under comments these days?
    hockey-politically correct?
    😆

    Go B's!

  4. I think there are a couple things that cause fans to be more negativity towards goalies. My main two though are since the barrier to play the position is so high financially, most people can't empathize with them since they never got a chance to understand what it takes to play the position. Also, and I'm sure there was one game 90 years ago that ended 1-0 and the goal was scored by a goalie, but in reality, a goalie cannot physically win a game but can very easily lose one. Sure, big saves can lead to a win in say a 2-1 game, but they still aren't scoring goals. Flipside it is very easy for a fan in a 2-1 loss to point at pucks that maybe should have been stopped. It's a really tough position to play mentally

  5. Bottom five lottery team. And there’s nothing wrong with that if we can get a chance at another Hagens or if all luck goes our way mckenna. We had an unreal run for over 10 years. A few years of downtime to rebuild is fine by me.

I know it may waste pasta time but maybe we get a boat load for him and go all in on the rebuild. If they start to stink again this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if that comes up.
