Now, we’re gonna find out who’s gonna get critiqued for violating the dress code on this podcast. John Riley is garbed out in Philadelphia, Philly gear. Can you believe that? In Southern California, I am wearing anything that keep me warm because I woke up this morning at my cottage in way upstate New York. It was 27°. You couldn’t believe the frost outside. You can’t believe how chilly my cottage was. So that’s why we’re both violating the dress code, but I tend to think the guy from left field in San Diego co-hosting this podcast really deserves a little bit of heat. How you doing? I’m doing well, man. We just talked on Monday and it looked like a summer day in your over your shoulder and now it looks like the you know like you’re in Green Bay, Wisconsin or something. It it is absolutely amazing. We’re going to go a lot of different directions on this podcast. We’re going to work our way towards the first pitch of the Dodger Philadelphia Philly playoff game that’s coming up uh on the West Coast. So, plain and simple, John, when we’re done with topics on the table because we do sports talk the way it should be done. We express opinions. When we’re done, we open it up to you. We’re looking for first timers. We’re looking for long-timers. We’re looking for people have a take, don’t suck. We want you to join us. Fans forum, John. How does that work? Just type your question or comment in the live chat on YouTube X or on Facebook. We’ll get you involved in fans forum. We’ll try to get as many fans forum comments as well as social media comments before we wrap up this podcast to make way for Dodger Philly playoff baseball. The playoffs have been spectacular. John, let’s get started and we’ll start at home plate at Petco Park. That is topic one. Where do you want to go? Yeah, I mean we’re going to start with the Padres’s. I mean, there’s a lot of, you know, a lot of chirping going on in social media. All right, let’s just ask this question. Great headline you posted there. That is the composite record of general manager AJ Per in his 11 years since he took over as GM. They’re below 500. However, by virtue of all the wheeling and dealing that made baseball, Petco Park, destination point, gas lamp quarter, this is vibrancy. This is exciting, but at the end of the day, the record is 8:16 and 870. At the end of the day, with his blueprint intact, the Padres’s have never won an NL West race. They’ve never won a National League championship series. They’ve never been to a World Series yet, despite the enormous amount of money and all the trades that he has made. However, that being said, this place is much better situation now than it was prior to AJ Peller’s arrival. Burning question going forward, though. He’s traded the farm system four times. The burning question, they’ve raised the ticket prices 57% over five years. I’m a bit a gasast at that. It’s like they’re taxing Padre fans for their loyalty. They just shattered for the third year in a row attendance records. This year they drew 3.43 million which is just a staggering number. Huge question. Now suddenly really tough decisions to make as it relates to payroll as it relates to guys who can be walk- free agents as it relates to guys who can opt out of contracts. They really have a tough set of decisions to make. Although they have some budget space, they don’t have all the budget space you would think in the world because I’m going to explain that with the next question. That being said, they’re 13 and 15 in postseason under his reign. And despite a roster full of all stars and big money guys, they’ve never won a National League championship series. And I’m still waiting my tickets to go cover a World Series game in a franchise run by AJ Per. So, John, the question I’m posing for you, dressed the way you are, you can have opinions from left field on this, do you hold him accountable? Has he done enough to warrant the kind of backing he probably should be getting because they’ve made Padre baseball the place to be downtown at Petco Park gas quarter? Or do you hold him to a higher standard because he’s done it his way, his way, his way, and we still haven’t gotten there? John, where do you stand on this? Well, everybody needs to be held accountable. Not just Padres’s. I mean, everybody in life needs to be held accountable for their decision-making. Now, I’ve got to believe that if you There’s two sort of parallel goals that are being pursued here. On one level is can the Padres’s get a World Series championship. On the other level, the secondary goal that exists sort of in a different universe is can the Padres’s make money for their shareholders? I’ve got to believe that AJ Prowller is a big part of how the the shareholders are probably enjoying a lot of the profits that are coming from Padre baseball. I would think that the organization would definitely keep him. If I’m in charge, he gets an extension. That’s a no-brainer decision because who are you going to go back to? I mean, this guy is the Wheeler dealer that we need. Now granted, he’s made some trades that some signings that we can critique, but it’s been overwhelming the number of deals he’s done that have been positive results, net positive. So, package deal, I say, AJ, man, you deserve another extension. I don’t know, four, five years, something like that. You agree or disagree with me about the constant price hikes on everything wrapped around Petco Park? Do you buy my theory that I’m not sure this is really right? They’re taxing the fans for the fans loyalty who just continue to pour into Petco Park at record setting numbers. And then we get to the next question. You know, they have chopped their payroll. They’re not going to reduce this payroll again, are they? And how are you going to stay upper echelon if you’re cutting payroll further considering the amount of money that they’re printing in the hallways at Petco Park? John, I I know you’re all things dollars and cents, so give me a take. Well, let’s just be clear. The only people that are getting taxed on this are tourists that stay in our hotels and get the transit occupancy taxes, help fund Petco Park. But the people want a quality product on the field and they’re willing to pay for it. And if you think the prices are too high, then you’re crazy. The the prices are probably not high enough. I mean, because they’ve sold out what, like 85, 90% of the home games. That’s a signal that people want Padre baseball. They’re willing to pay the money for the tickets, the food, the parking, the whole thing. And people just can’t get enough of this. So, I don’t say they’re taxing you. You the Padre’s got to make money to spend money. How are we going to pay for bigname free agents or give deserving young kids a proper extension or raise to their contract if we’re not generating revenue at the turn style? So, I I think that I would not in a million years be angry with the Padres’s for raising prices. In fact, I think that’s enabled all of this success to happen. You’re not of the opinion with your opinions from left field that they’ve done this to rake all this money into the hallways at Petco Park to make good on all the money that Preller burned through during the first six, seven, eight years when Peter Sidler allowed him to do what he wanted. You don’t think they’re profitering now to wipe out the past debt? Well, if they had passed debt, then they’re they haven’t been profitering. So, if they’re making money now to pay off debt, that’s fine. I mean, that’s life, you know, and they had to make some big splashes to make San Diego Padre baseball relevant again. I mean, I’m thankful that they signed Machado and and they brought I mean, even the Eric Hosmer signing, we can look back at that and we can obviously he didn’t live up to the value of his contract. people saw that coming, but it was nice to see the Padres’s kind of getting in the game, you know, that they were a serious operation and were starting to build credibility. So, no, no, I mean, from a financial perspective, if they’re making money now, good on them. They’re they have a product that people want. People can’t get enough of it. They’re it’s a the fans are happy. The owners are happy. That’s a win-win. That’s all good. It’s all good. Hacksaw says, “Give Prello a contract extension and don’t you dare cut the budget.” What does Life of Riley in left field say? Well, I mean, they do have certain limitations because of the salary cap and that way that whole game is played. And I know owners don’t want to go over the salary cap because they don’t want to have to get stuck with, you know, those uh penalties. So my hunch is is the Padres’s are probably going to spend as much as they can to stay under the salary cap and they’re just going to have to find a way to make it work and then if they get into, you know, a playoff chase and they think they’ve got a shot, then maybe the owners are willing to kind of go above the salary cap at the trade deadline. I see something like that happening. I mean, wouldn’t it be great if the Padres’s were able to sign someone like Otani and have all of his money deferred for like 10 years? I mean, we can’t get that. So, uh, you know, they’re going to spend up to the cap. That’s what I would expect. Okay. The correct phrasiology is luxury tax, not salary cap. Okay. Okay. That’s item one. Padre fans who have been pouring in to this podcast all baseball season long with opinions. Your fans forum chat box is open. Do you rate what we’ve gotten from PLER over 11 years? Success or failure? you need to dive in now because we’re going to try to get to as many as we can. That’s the first question as it relates to the Padres’s. Second question has to do with decision day coming. John, go ahead. Yeah, we got some money decisions. Who they going to keep? Who they going to let go? And who do you spend it on? Okay, here’s the number. If all the Padres’s who are eligible enter free agency or opt out, Padres’s have $65 million in budget space to use. That sounds sexy. That sounds sparkling, but it’s not 65 million. They have seven guys arbitration eligible. That’s going to eat up 22 million of that. That includes the contract, etc. They have 19 million owed to Paveta because he structured his deal, economically favorable first year, massive pay bump second year. That is going to eat in to that. There’s ways to handle this. This might be sacrilegious to say, but you Darvish, with all those miles on his arm, has not been the same pitcher for three full seasons. He’s got $48 million left on his contract. I would ask Darish to give money back and maybe instead of all that hard cash, restructure it and put some incentive clauses if he has a bounceback season for him to earn some of that money. We don’t know what Musgrove is going to be like. He’s got a long-term extension. I’d go to him and ask him to take less hard cash, flip it to incentive clauses. If Java Joe becomes Java Joe this coming season, we just don’t know that situation. I like cease. I’m not giving CE a pay raise. I want cease to take a pay cut. I’d give cease incentives that could push him to 15 million if we vintage Dylan cease has a good season next season in terms of Michael King 7.7 million I would bump him some maybe up to 10 and I’d give him incentives that could push him to 15 if he became a banner full season starter with no problems. Tough call on Suarez because you do have Mason Miller. If he opts out, you can always go back and negotiate and say, “Hey, we paid you 10. I’ll give you 12. I’ll give you incentives that could get you to 15 if you have another banner season.” I don’t know whether he’d accept that, but what I’m trying to do is creatively create money, backend load it, if you will, if these guys have superb seasons and put this team maybe in the World Series. I like a rise, but I’m not bringing a rise back at 14 million. Let a rise go creatively with money left. Go find some type of bat with power first baseman, maybe left fielder. I would turn, I would trade Campusano. I would go back abroad and see if they can find another gem of a pitcher in Japan, in Taiwan, in China. Historically, boots on the ground, Preller has found guys who’ve come in and been very productive there. They got to move money around. I think that’s the way to do it. John, you tell me your reaction to my version of new math 2026 pad payroll. Well, first of all, before we get into the numbers, that Monopoly man guy kind of looks like like some relation in the Hacksaw family. Is that your distant cousin with all the money? That’s right. He’s the one that made it and I didn’t. Um, so, you know, I’ve seen the these spreadsheets. I think Kevin AC or is it Jeff Passan, you know, from the uh, you know, in the media have produced these spreadsheets that show the dollar figure for the all the starting pitchers and the infielders and outfielders and the bench guys. And it’s really interesting to see it laid out like that. But you know, you’ve got a lot of deals that are suddenly going to become really heavy. I mean, like Paveta is going from like one to 19 or one to 20 million and then Bachado’s creeping up towards like close to 40 million a year. I mean, so I’m curious to see how all those things stack up. Um, but to your point, should they get creative looking for, you know, boots on the ground, looking in Asia? They just signed a kid from, I think it was either China or Taiwan, um, just recently. So, that’s new news. That’s good to see. Um, but in the end, you going back to Musgrove or Darvish and trying to renegotiate a deal, that’s that’s a tough call. I mean, if they’re willing to do it, and both of those guys seem like, you know, quote team players, they might be, but how much would it free up, you know? So, those guys signed a contract. They expected he paid for the contract, you know, and the contract, like in Musgro’s case, is 100 mil guaranteed. He’s not going to say, “Hey, you know what? Just give me 50 million and I’ll do the rest on incentives.” He’s not going to do that. So, I don’t know. They’re in a tough spot. They’re in a tough spot because of the contracts gave out. And I’ve always used the phrase that credit card bill eventually comes due and that’s where the pondies are right now. But at the end of the day, you can do something deferred. You do something incentives. I’m sorry. CES is really coming off a crap year. I’m not paying him 14 million or 18 million. King has got an injury history here now that we have to be worried about. Musgrove you can creatively finance. Maybe you do it with deferrals or maybe you just do it with bonuses if he can be what he can be. But I mean, Darvish has had three straight years of elbow problems. A lot of people fail to realize you. Darvish has thrown 3,80 innings over 20 years. I think he’s got an arthritic condition in the elbow that’s never ever going to be the same again. So therefore, the contract that was is not what Darvish is right now and what Darvish is going to be going forward. That’s that’s how I would do it. Uh agree or disagree with the Arise scenario. Yeah. I mean I I I let Arise go. I mean because remember we always had like one too many position players or hitters, you know, we were always having to sit O’Harn or you know or or Rise or Sheets or someone like that. So, they need to get move one of those guys. Arise makes sense to me. And I know he’s bitter. He’d love to stay in San Diego. He loves it here. So, I I don’t know. CE is some guy that I would walk away from. I I would became very distrustful of the way he pitched. You know, even when we first got him, we knew he was had this talent and he was even still he would sputter. He would show flashes of brilliance and struggles. He had the no hitter and then he’d had struggle. So, I think you let him go. I I still think they’ve got some like hidden bullets in the gun. There are guys like Mason Miller, Adrien and maybe even like Brian Hoing that might be a starter for you. And that way you can get guys that can start that would not necessarily be 20 million a year guys. You know, you’re going to have to have some other dudes do it. And then you can backfill and you can make like I don’t know hypothetically Estrada your closer, you know, or uh Jason Adam your closer when he comes back and and then you just got to find some middle relief help. But they’ve got a way to convert closers to starters and then if you lose a cease, it’s not that big of a deal. Okay, that that sounds great in history, but was a starter beset by injuries for six or seven years. He’s found a niche. I don’t think from a health standpoint you can run the risk and say we want you to go out and throw five, six, seven innings cuz he kept breaking down. Mason Miller was a starter. Physically broke down, flipped him into a setup closer guy where he’s excelled. I don’t know that you want to dabble with guys who have injury history when they were doing the other thing when you’ve really locked them in to certain things here. Okay, let’s see. Our starters have injury history. you know, Darvish and Musgrove, they’re all hurt. I mean, that’s just the nature of pitching. So, Morahon, we when we spent 11 million to sign him and paid the $11 million international bonus tax, that’s a $22 million investment. You don’t expect that for like a seventh inning high leverage reliever. I mean, you want that dude to be one of your core five starters. So, I don’t have any problem with like converting some of these these guys up to be starters. Obviously, Ruben Nabble is going to know what’s best. The players are going to know how their body is going to react. may have come to grips with the fact that yeah, I’m a reliever. I’m never going to be able to be a starter, but they should explore those opportunities because because from a general manager perspective, there’s not enough money to make the whole roster fit. And you’re going to have to get creative. And and I think that’s the Padres’s need to be creative. You just can’t keep going to the bank and signing bigname guys, you know, every time there’s a free agent. You’ve got to develop your guys and you got to bring them through the organization. Good luck with that because they trade the organization. Four times in 11 years he’s done that. Okay. Padre fans are invited. We put topics on the table. We express opinions. We use the talk show phrase, I’m hitting your hot button. I want you to get ready now to join us in fans forum. The chat box is open. You want to argue with us about what we just proposed. You got your own spin on what they should do. feel free to add into the conversation. Fans forum coming up right at the end of this podcast. John, we got playoff games to talk about. We’re not done talking baseball. There’s a ton of other issues here. Let’s start with Dodger Blue. Yeah, the Dodgers and the Phils. And uh the game went the other way this last night. Dodgers, one bad inning for Yamamoto. Bad inning for Clayton Kershaw. Dodgers stopped hitting. How about Kyle Schwarber? 0 for 22. looked lost out there. Kyle Schwarber hits a 455 ft home run onto the roof of the pavilion and right, comes back later, crashes a two-run shot. Then you add into that the other home run from Rio Muto. Ranger Suarez comes out of the bullpen and goes five innings, gives up only one run, and that was a pretty impressive Philadelphia win. And the Dodger bats one away. Yamamoto got banged around, gave up a couple of runs and six hits. He had two bad innings. Kershaw had to go out there because Tanner Scott did not come to Dodger Stadium with personal problems. They they got they’re a little bit short, but however, that only counts as one game. So now at 3:00 this afternoon, 6:00 Eastern Standard Time, Dodgers Phillies again, Dodgers think they bounce back. Philadelphia obviously has to win with Chris Sanchez on the mound going against Tyler Glassnau. Only concern I have is Glassnau can give you two to three good innings, but there’s always a bumpy inning that seems to really set him back. So, I just don’t know where they are. There’s a couple of other items here to talk about. Do you know this Otani? He just seems to be psyched out at home plate. John, he’s 1 for14 with seven strikeouts in the series against Philadelphia starting pitching. So, this is going to be fascinating to see if this is a bounceback game or whether this thing goes back to Philadelphia for game five on Saturday night. And by the way, if the Dodgers lose tonight, they give Otani the ball to go back into Philadelphia to pitch in critical game five. What a a great series. But boy, this roller coaster with Dodger baseball. Wow. Go ahead. Yeah, the road teams won three in a row. So, uh, this is an interesting series. I I I was hoping for fireworks in this series. These two, you know, monster teams facing each other. And I was kind of disappointed that the Dodgers like rolled the Phillies two in in Philadelphia because I thought this would be over, you know, three and done, but it’s not. And yeah, that bomb that Schwber hit was great. How about Clayton Kershaw? What the hell happened to Kaitton Kershaw? You know, we always all these accolades. He’s great. First bout Hall of Famer. And the dude, I mean, you were getting on Manny Machado’s case about his p uh postseason success. Kershaw doesn’t have much of a leg to stand on there. Well, the only thing is, cuz I went back and checked it this morning. Kershaw career-wise, postseason, 13 and 13 as a starter. That’s not bad. 4.36 RA. Now, when he’s had to pitch out of the bullpen in postseason, he hasn’t done very well, but at the end of the day, he’s still a Hall of Fame pitcher. And he had no command last night. I give him credit. He stood there and he answered every question in the dugout, whereas Machado glared and stared and was very condescending after finishing up another crap postseason playoff series. But that that’s history. Tonight’s a brand new night. And if there’s a game five, Showtime is gonna get the baseball in front of this Saturday. How about that? Oh, yeah. Yeah. It’s gonna be great. I mean, I I hope it does go five and goes back to Philly. I think it’d be unlikely. I think the Dodgers are likely going to get their act together and they’re going to find a way to go through, but I just want to say this. I I mean, did you see the part of the story about how when the Phillies left Philadelphia, they only packed one uniform and they packed the the the road blues, the powder blues with this Phillies logo, you know, which I love. I mean, it’s like the Luzinski Mike Schmidt era, you know, back in the day. And and I think it’s great. I It’s one of the best uniforms of baseball. Don’t you think? The area code is 215 in case people show up with a moving van and ask you to leave San Diego and exit this podcast. The area code is 215 if we have to have your mail and your stuff forwarded on. Okay, we go from Dodger Philly. Let’s talk about the other playoff series because they’ve been pretty electric baseball. Some lopsided baseball and some wow surprising baseball, John. Yeah, like there’s a lot going on here. Here’s the big board. Big board. New York Yankees are on vacation. Holy cow. Talk radio in New York is melting down. The sports teams are on the front page of the tabloid newspapers. The Yankees with all that payroll just betrayed Aaron Judge. Nobody but Aaron Judge hit in the playoff series to Toronto. And the Blue Jays were just relentless. They went out there, they swung sticks, and it was Vlad Guerrero, and it was a whole number of other guys led by George Springer, Nathan Luke’s got some pretty gritty pitching. Yankee pitching fell apart. I went back and looked at the batting averages of that lineup. Judge hit 500 in the postseason for the Yankees against the Jays and the Red Sox. Everybody else hit a combined 190. Stanton disappeared. Bellinger did not hit. Trent Gerson was hitting in the 130s. The left side of the infield was a mess. And the New York pitching staff was just in disarray. Aaron Boon has taken so much heat. So Yankee season is over. Toronto just moving on. Seattle, Detroit. This is a kind of a screw ball series. Now it’s best of five on Friday night, game five. Winner goes on, loser goes home. I keep wondering where are all the Seattle bats at this point because we’ve not seen hardly anything from Naylor. I’m looking for Suarez to come up with back-to-back good games. Julio Rodriguez is kind of MIA the last month of the season and now into postseason. They’re just not hitting and their bullpen has kind of fallen apart in Seattle. Now, they do have good start starting pitching. And here’s a weird angle to a story. Detroit’s young guys, the Riley Greens, the Colton Keiths of the world, they’ve been hitting home runs, not consistently. Detroit today terminated both their hitting coaches. Told them they’re not coming back next season, and they’re in the middle of the playoffs getting ready for game five of the series. My my heart says there’s no way that Seattle should lose at home, but Seattle’s already lost at home to the Detroit Tigers. So, game five is on Friday, and you got Milwaukee and the Chicago Cubs. I just don’t think that the Cubs have anywhere near enough starting pitching and they’re going to give the ball to Matt Boyd again and he’s really tailed off since the middle of the season. Imanaga is not the same guy outside of Jameson Talion. Nobody’s doing anything on the mound for the Cubs. And Kyle Tuck Tucker coming back from the calf injury. He’s just not hitting in the games he’s played since he came off the disabled list. And Peter Crow Armstrong, he’s not hitting for average. does still has power, but I I think the Cubs are in trouble and you know, Milwaukee is Milwaukee and I think Milwaukee is going to find a way to win this series. So, John, what do you think of what the demise of the Yankees, the screw ball Seattle series, and Milwaukee must be the real deal? Yeah, I think Milwaukee is the real deal. Um, I’m happy for those guys. But the best part of that Yankees Blue Jays series, especially last night in the Yankee statement, is just looking at Yankee fans in the stands and just in sheer misery and and then all the celebs that are out there and they’re just living and breathing on every emotional moment and it’s a lot of fun. It just rem reminds me of a lot of previous Yankees playoffs that never really went their way. But the Blue Jays definitely deserve this. I’m happy for them. Um, and yeah, the Detroit Mariners series. Interesting. What the hell? Firing coaches in the middle of the playoffs. I mean, that’s like uh something to do with Steve Fiser and the M Michigan Wolverines. I think the correct term you’re looking for in relation to Yankee fan was hopic. They looked like they were going to have a nervous breakdown sitting behind that dugout. It’s great. I love it. I the the drama of playoff baseball is fantastic. I concur with you. Okay, that’s all things baseball on the field. Unfortunately, we got to cover baseball off the field. John, go to the next topic on the table. Yeah, the next one. And here we go. The the Angels in the Tyler Skaggs saga. Jury selection was continuing through this afternoon. They think they may have to go into Friday. The trial starts on Monday. Four top executives of the Angel organization will be the first to testify in the Tyler Skaggs drug death. At the end of the day, the argument will be, did the Angels cause the death of the pitcher because their PR director, Eric Kay, who had his own drug problems, became a drug dealer to players in a clubhouse, including Scaggs? Or did Skaggs, a self-admitted addict, kill himself because he brought a drug problem with him from the Arizona Diamondbacks and it escalated when he got access to additional different types of opioids from the public relations director. I saw the witness list. It’s staggering who’s been asked to testify, including Mike Trout and Albert Puhols, including former manager Mike Sosa, including Dan Duket, longtime baseball general manager. Led to believe a team doctor has been subpoenenaed and deposed and will have to testify along the way. Uh, this story is going to be dark. It’s going to be ugly. At the end of the day, the burning question, and I’ll pose this to Angel fans, do you blame Scaggs for his own death because of who he was and the fact he lied and he continued to do it when there was help out there through the Players Association? Do the Angels bear responsibility because that employee of theirs was the one dealing drugs even though he had his own personal drug problem? The Angels tried to help Eric K through. This is deep. This is dark. This is a terribly sad moment in the history of Angel baseball. John, you’re at the podium. Give me your opinion. You know, I I was just thinking as you’re going through all that if this has happened in baseball with any other player or even in any other sport and trying to think of similar cases of an active player that died of an overdose and I’m thinking of Lamb Bayas. Um, what other examples are there? I don’t think there are that I can think of just off the top of my head. Bias died before he ever got to the NBA. He died of a cocaine overdose after the Boston Celtics had drafted him. He died between the time he was drafted and training camp opened. I mean, obviously, there have been other players who have done drugs and had bad outcome, but we’ve never had this type of litigation. And the Scaggs family is suing Arty Moreno and the Angels for $789 million. Monday and Tuesday are just going to be horrendous. Four top executives in the organization who the family says knew had to know or did nothing about it are going to testify starting with the team president uh John Carpino and a number of other people waiting to see if Eric Kay is going to testify. He of course is serving 22 years in prison. He is on that witness list too about what he knew, how he was treated, etc. why he did what he did. The dimensions of the story are deep and really really sad. Yeah. I mean I I I don’t know what to say on this anymore and we’ve been talking about it as it’s been leading up to the trial. It is sad. It’s just it just seems like you remember that old cartoon of the Flintstones with Pebble and Bam Bam and they had the guy Badluck Schlleep Rock that would walk around town. He always had a cloud over his head. That’s the Angels franchise. I mean, you know, there there’s just so many like bad luck things that happen to the Angels. And it’s one thing to be bad luck, you know, like us Padre fans where they always seem to lose, but this is bad luck where people die. And and I I just I just kind of wonder if Arty Moreno thinks that, you know, he did he curse the franchise? I mean, it’s just it’s almost beyond reason. It’s almost like voodoo that’s going on there. Well, the human tragedy about Angel baseball goes way before Hardy Mareno bought the club. Goes back to the Autry era. Goes back to the shooting death of Lyman Bastto. Uh the tragic death of Minnie Rojos. The terrible more recent death of the number one draft pick pitcher Nick Aiden Hart who was killed by a drunk driver to where we are with Tyler. Donnie Moore. Donnie Moore suicide. Exactly. So listen, you’re an Angel fan. Fans forum chat box is open. Got an opinion. Where do you stand if you were in the juror’s box? I mean, based on the information we have provided on this podcast, which is pretty deep. Is it on scaggs because he was an addict and lied about it and kept doing it? Or is it on the Angels for not controlling their employee, terminating their employee? So, we’ll see this goes. We go from all things baseball, John. Big weekend. NFL football just around the corner. Yeah, the NFL is around the corner. And let’s bring up that big board. We got all kinds of content here for you. Let’s start about the Chargers. Chargers go cross country to Miami. I don’t know if I’d say this is an ambush in waiting because on paper, you look at the rosters of these two teams, there’s no way the Chargers should lose, but they lost to the 0 and4 New York Giants, but they got beat by a battered Washington Commander team. But Justin Herbert’s taking a tremendous hammering, but their offensive line’s an absolute mess. got so many other issues. Here are the numbers on Justin Herbert. I mean, he’s a phenomenal season. He’s got almost 1,400 allpurpose yards in five games. That’s an amazing statistic. But he’s become a one-man show, eight touchdowns, four picks. Justin Herbert has taken 16 sacks already this season in five games, 55 hits in five games. They can’t protect him. Both of his offensive tackles are now uninjured reserve with major injuries. His big money right guard coming off a concussion now has a broken hand. Talking about Mickey Beckton. Uh they have lost both their top two running backs now. Uh Ammani Hampton has gone on IR with a severe ankle sprain already without Naji Harris with a ruptured Achilles tendon. On top of that, three linebackers are on injured reserve. They can’t stop the run at defensive tackle. And they just gave up on one other starting safety, Aloha Gilman. He and a fifth round pick were traded to the Baltimore Ravens for a pass rushing defensive end linebacker who’s got no quarterback sacks. So they’re they’ve got so many problems. They don’t have a quarterback problem. They got problems everywhere around this quarterback in terms of protection. Now they go to Miami. Miami’s got Tua. There is no Tyreek Hill. Life after Tyreek has been bumpy. Now Tua missed practiced this week with a hand injury and a hip injury, but they say he’s going to play. Huge question. Running backs can’t stay on the field. Bigger question. How about this disparity? Miami is averaging only 278 yards per game on offense. You would think with Tua that number would be much higher, but they don’t they can’t protect him, etc. and their defense is giving up 376. What a staggering disparity of what they do when they have the ball and what they can’t do when the other guy has got the ball. Chargers should walk in and rip these guys. But look what’s happened to the Chargers the last two weeks. The the word I’m going to use, John, is crisis. Chargers are in a real crisis right now just because all the injuries up front. On paper, I thought spectacular roster to start the season and they’ve had injuries that have chipped away, chipped away almost on a week-by-week basis. Your thoughts? Well, I remember they started the season 3 and 0. We’re like, “Hey, the do the Padres’s are, excuse me, the Chargers are in first place.” Like, holy moly. I mean, we couldn’t believe it in that tough division. And all of a sudden, everything just went to hell. I mean, I I was just reading today that they’re demoting the starting center, Boseman. He’s going to sit. I mean, there’s more shuffling of the deck of the line. Yeah, they don’t have anybody in the offensive line now outside of Zion Johnson, and he’s having a miserable season at left guard. And this was supposed to be the forte. They had three number one draft picks in the offensive front. Convinced me that they’re going to be really good, and they’re all hurt. One of them is not playing very well. And the the other one, the veteran center Boseman, has now been demoted because he’s played so poorly. He played poorly last year. He was the lowest rated offensive center, and they brought him back and gave him the job again. Yeah. Yeah. Chargers. Chargers are in big trouble. So, if you’re an NFL fan, feel free to get involved. Get on the fans forum chat box. Give us your opinion on the Chargers. This is not Justin Herbert’s fault. He’s paying the price though for everything that’s fallen apart around him. Hey Lee, when you look at those logos, Chargers, Dolphins, you ever get any good memories from that? Well, playoff games. Chargers won that playoff game in Miami in the Dan Fouts era. I was not here for that. But that was the game they won in all the heat and humidity and then turned around and played in the freezer bowl the next weekend in Cincinnati where their playoff hopes Super Bowl hopes died. So that’s that. Yeah, that’s one. The other one is the year the Chargers went to the Super Bowl. They beat Miami in the mud at San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium to go to Pittsburgh. They won the AFC Championship game. I’ll never ever forget that game. So yeah. Yeah. Bolts, Dolphins, but by the way, it’s not our team anymore, but we’re still continuing to cover. So, yeah, there is there is a lot of Charger Fish history for sure. For sure. Okay, we go from that. We got some interesting quarterback battles on that Sunday schedule that you want to talk about. Go ahead. Yeah, we do. I mean, we got a ton of content up here on this board. Let’s get it up here for you, Lee. And boom. Here we go. big games. Seattle goes to Jacksonville. This is pretty impressive. Seahawks are 4- one. Is that more impressive than the Jaguars being 4-1? What a job Liam Cohen has done in Seattle. Now, I don’t know if they’re living on borrowed time or they’re doing it with smoking mirrors. Trevor Lawrence is playing pretty respectable football in terms of not turning the ball over. Sam Darnold is just lighting it up in Seattle in terms of yardage downfield. Sam Darnold’s got a quarterback rating of 106. So this now this is a tough game. The Seahawks travel more than anybody just based on where SeaTac airport is. And I mean their road trips to the East Coast are just vicious and forever. Uh so we’ll see if Sam Darnold and these guys that defense is playing pretty well. I think they got seven pass interceptions. See if they go to Jacksonville and slow down this Jaguars team. Second game is the 49ers Tampa Bay. M. Jones has now had three really big-time games in a row and he’s going to start again. How the hell Seattle’s doing us with all the injuries and Christian McCaffrey is not running up massive numbers. This is pretty much M. Jonesman quarterback’s accomplishments. They go play Baker Mayfield. that Mayfield right now is starting to flash some signs that, hey, consider me for NFL MVP. I think Mayfield’s got eight touchdown passes, only one interceptions. Buccaneers are playing really good defense. So, this this is going to be a great game. M. Jones versus Baker, Detroit, Kansas City. Holy cow. You’re looking at the storyline here with the Lions. Jared Goff is having a phenomenal season. They’re averaging like 403 yards per game on offense. Mahomes is doing a lot of good things, but they are still struggling. You know, if they if Kansas City loses on Sunday, they’re going to be two and four. Man, that’s a big hole to have to dig out if you think you’re still an elite team in the AFC West. So, you got two two redhot quarterbacks, but the Chiefs just at this point don’t seem to have enough around Patrick Mahomes. The other football stories there, Dallas Cowboys. Now, he flashed an obscene sign at the New York Jets fans last weekend after Dak Prescuit threw his fourth touchdown in the game. An obscene sign with his middle index finger. And he can’t tell me that he did that, saying, “We’re number one. We’re number one. We’re number one. We got fined $250,000 by the NFL for that.” Meanwhile, in Arizona, the Arizona Cardinals find their coach Jonathan Ganon $100,000 for racing up the sidelines and physically assaulting one of his rookie running backs who was showboating after a 72 yard touchdown run and dropped the ball at the one-yd line going in for what should have been the game-winning touchdown. Turned out to be a devastating touchback and an Arizona Cardinal loss last weekend. Ganon lost his mind on the sidelines and because of the physical confrontation and what he said in the postgame press conference, his own club docked him $100,000. Ganon’s got all kinds of injury problems on a team and now he’s got Kyler Murray’s got hurt has gotten hurt. Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, you need to explain this one to me. John, you’re the smartest guy on this podcast, right? Yeah. Oh, you’re admitting it now. Show me your driver. You’re the smartest guy, right? Okay. I want to see your GPA on your driver’s license. Here’s a story. Cincinnati desperate for quarterbacking because Jake Browning had thrown four or thrown eight interceptions since replacing Joe Burrow. Cincinnati trades a fifth round draft pick. A fifth, which people hardly ever do for a 40-year-old Joe Flacco. Flaco has two practices and will be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season in Cincinnati. just the way they do business in Cincinnati is so bizarre. Uh and of course that that whole situation is just it’s really gotten out of control. And the Raiders give a vote of confidence to a quarterback that right now nobody believes can win. Not with that offensive line, not with the problems with the Raiders. Gino Smith is staying in as starting quarterback. He’s got nine interceptions last seven games and sacked 16 times. You know, waiting in reserve is Ken Picket. Who is Pickicket better than Gino? Gino’s not playing like Gino played for Pete Carroll in Seattle. So, the the Raiders who’ve got quarterback problems. So, John, we got three marquee games and a bunch of controversy for you to make a comment on. Well, I’m I’m really happy for Liam Cohen. I mean, well, they’re four in one. And And what you think of that play that Trevor Lawrence there at the end of the game? He like tripped over one of his lineman’s feet, fell backwards, got up, scrambled in, and and Chris Jones just standing around with his like hands on his hips. Yeah, Chris Jones taken a lot of heat in Kansas City. He’s not played real well, and he’s making mega money. I mean, you’re not going balls to the wall on a a goal line play to win you the game. I mean, it’s really absurd. I don’t know what’s going on in Chris Jones mind. Andy Reid never criticizes his players, but boy, the fans and the media are really after Chris Jones. Can you imagine being a Bengals fan and seeing all this junk on the field and the contract disputes and now Burrow gets hurt again, has had five major injuries in his career and have Mike Brown trade a fifthround draft pick for a 40-year-old quarterback who turns the ball over. Can you believe what’s going on Cincinnati? Yeah, Joe Flacco to the rescue. One of my buddies, he grew up in Cincinnati. He always refers to them as the Bungles, you know, and all and they made two Super Bowls. I mean, they’ve had moments, but Joe Burrow, man, he’s just getting screwed there. You just feel bad for the guy, you know? And by the way, that that Cardinal team, that’s weak sauce, man. That that is an example of an organization that is weak. I mean, you that guy the that that you know, showboated and fumbled the ball before the uh before going in the end zone. He should have had a coach get in his face and I’m happy that the Arizona coach, you know, got again and got in his face to say this is unacceptable. And sometimes these guys need a little, you know, if they need a bump or something, you know, I don’t have a problem with that. I mean, I’m surprised Cardinal organization, Cardinal fan puts up with this losing attitude. I think it’s ridiculous. And what do you think about Gino Smith, Pete Carol, and the Raider Nation? I mean, I don’t know anybody, myself included, that thought they’d be one and four. No, we had hope for this organization. You know, we had hope that, you know, you got a quarterback that, you know, Gino Smith is not a Hall of Famer, but he’s going to be a solid dude. He should maybe make this a 10 and seven team, maybe an 11 and six team. You got Ashton Genty, who has all the promise in the world. They added some receivers. You’re think, and they had the great tight ends, and you’re thinking, hey, maybe something’s cooking. Got a good coach and nothing’s working. So, I I don’t know. I I you got to give Pete Carol more time here. I mean, he needs some offensive linemen. I mean, Frank, frankly, half the NFL is desperate for offensive line. Well, you know, their problems have just exploded because Colton Miller, their best offensive lineman, has got a fractured left ankle. Both their tight ends are hurt. Neither one’s practicing. They’re not going to play again defensively. They’re just not stopping anybody. Max Crosby can’t do this whole thing by himself defensively. So, it’s just a really fragmented football team. Okay, we get to halftime. You got opinions on any of the topics on the table? That fans form chat box is open. You need to fill it up now. We’re going to be here till the top of the hour. I I’m trying to cherry pick the best while Hacksaw is going through his headlines. But I see Ballpark Pzel and Mike and Angel and Lucky and uh Roger and uh who else is in there? Tomas and I mean there’s a bunch of other dudes that I mentioned even earlier. They’re all on board. They all have questions for you, Lee, about a lot of Padre Dodger commentary, a lot of Charger commentary in fans forum. Drop your take in the live chat in YouTube X or Facebook. We’ll get you involved. Okay, just a reminder when we’re done, fans forum is coming up and again we’re going to try to get to as many as we can. Working on a bit of a tight schedule and you also have to decide who violated the dress code on this podcast today. Me because it’s 27 degrees outside of my cottage in upstate New York or him. I don’t know why he’s wearing Philadelphia old school colors. you feel free to have an opinion there because I always take shots at the host too, but that’s okay. Okay, John, let’s move on to the second half. We’re going from pro football, interesting storylines, college football far away. Yeah, college football and you know, the aftermath of all the the news and notes at SC and UCLA. Let’s start with Southern Cal. Trojans are playing really good football. Trojans’s got a chance to make a statement in the Big 10. Their home, LA Coliseum. Guess who comes to town? The Michigan men. So, you got Jaden Mava who’s got almost 1,600 yards passing, 11 touchdowns, only one pick, going against the unbelievable Michigan freshman Bryce Underwood. Now, Underwood has thrown for a,000 yards, but he’s only thrown three touchdown passes this season. This is going to be fun to see how SC attacks Michigan deep down the field and whether they can jump to a 140 or 170 or 21 lead and make Underwood have to throw the football a lot. So you got Southern Cal Michigan in LA. UCLA’s coming off the unbelievable win last weekend. How the hell was that possible? UCLA Michigan State. Was last Saturday a fluke? This is going to be interesting to see if the Bruins can take the next step forward. Now, Nico Amma Leava is just putting up goddy numbers for UCLA, but he can’t play defense and he can’t do it by himself, but he’s got,286 yards passing and running and he’s got 10 touchdowns on the season. So, you got the Bruins in East Lancing at Michigan State. Really interesting matchup. Big 12, Arizona State, Utah. They’re both four and one for different reasons. Sunundevils have a really good quarterback and Sammy Levit, but they got a much improved defense and defense is is playing really well at Arizona State. Utah got the new coach in Bronco Menhal. He’s got Devin Dampier. Holy cow is he playing well now. They got beat. They’re 4- one on the season. So, this is a great game in the Big 12 Conference. Meanwhile, we got coaching storylines. this North Carolina situation. We’ve talked about it during the course of the season. Uh W NBC affiliate in Raleigh is the one that reported that there were conversations this week in North Carolina about a buyout for Bill Bich. Bellich has just been stonefaced. Uh his general manager Mike Lombardi has written a kind of a costic letter to all the big money boosters who fund the hiring of Bellich saying you people need to be patient. We’re now in a rebuild mode. That’s not what was promised. Players family say it’s a toxic situation that seems to exist. Their insinuations that some of Bellich’s assistant coaches have already violated NCAA rules as it relates to illegal benefits to some of the players who roared in through the transfer portal. Some of the families of the players left behind say that Bellich is playing favorites with the transfer kids versus the kids that he retained. And they’re just miserable on the field right now. They’re 0 and3 against real people that they played. The only people they beat were 1A schools. They’re in a by-week this week. And they got the story that’s swirling around and around and around the W report. They say, “No, there’s no coaching change being made.” But the NBC affiliate says, “Yeah, there were conversations of a buyout already. This is going to blow up in the face of everybody.” Bellich, the only thing he’ll tell the media is, “We’re staying the course. We’re just going to get better as we go and we’re going to fix this thing.” At this point, they have not. Meanwhile, at Colorado, Deion Sanders underwent emergency surgery on his leg for blood clots that have now returned. And remember, when he was at Jackson State, he had multiple surgeries and actually the amputation of a couple of toes along the way. He says he’s not going to give up as head coach. Now, the Buffs are two and four and they’re not playing really well at all. Uh but NFL players who are good friends with Sanders think he needs to step aside to take care of his health and appoint an interim head coach. He says no. Sanders says he will be on the sidelines this weekend. Meanwhile, interesting story. Remember Andrew Luck, legendary Colts quarterback who retired early because of injuries. He went to Stanford to become their general manager to kind of take over the trouble football program and brought longtime NFL coach Frank Reicha as a head coach. They’re competitive, but they don’t have enough athletes. Andrew Luck’s been on a fundraising tour. He got a former Stanford player from the 1960s to donate $50 million on Wednesday of this week in NIL money to help fund the rebirth of Stanford football. It’s absolutely amazing. and he hopes this will be a catalyst for so many other great Stanford players, the James Loftton’s, the John Owways of the world to donate money too. But he had one player who’s a successful entrepreneur donate $50 million on Wednesday to the Stanford program. So John, we got big games and we got the coaching storylines, too. Go ahead. Well, there’s a lot of, you know, big name or big money people there in Silicon Valley next to Stanford. So yeah, you don’t need to just look at former players. You just got to look at university alumni and there are some deep pockets there. Yeah, I’d like to be nice to see Stanford relevant again. But I’ll tell you what, like a couple hours ago, I was driving in my car and I was listening to 973 and Braden Soprano was like reading the riot act on Bill Bellichic and this whole thing about North Carolina and it was crazy. I mean, some of the things he was saying how the recruits for uh um the recruits that were made by the previous coach um what’s his name? Mac Brown. Mac Brown. And the recruits from the previous coach are being deprioritized and instead Bellichic’s transfers are getting, you know, special privileges that aren’t available to other players. Some players have uh the ability to have their family on the field and others don’t. No one’s allowed, no no uh families are allowed to talk to Bill Bellichic. It’s like total dysfunction, you know, like a like the culture is rotting away. And yeah, they’re looking for buyouts. I mean, this is crazy. And then meanwhile, you have hot pants there, which provides some more entertainment to this whole nutty story. I don’t I just don’t know what everyone was thinking because this is sort of kind of turning out the way that I sort of thought it would. that an old grumpy man that doesn’t do press conferences for the NFL sure as heck isn’t going to be this super friendly community guy for UNCC. It it’s absolutely stunning. Uh you know, and I I wrote a column on my website about this and I talked about it briefly. I think back’s introductory press conference. He made the strangest statement of all. He made the statement, “We’re going to run this like the NFL’s 33rd team.” Oh, and everybody’s excited. you know, Bellichc’s infrastructure winning and all that. And then I thought to myself last week and I thought again this week, they are the NFL’s 33rd team, an expansion team. Expansion teams don’t freaking win. North Carolina’s not winning. They’re not competitive. They’re 0 and3 against power five schools. They’ve been outscored 120- 33. Now, they won’t lose this weekend, John, because they’re not playing. They got a buy. But it’s like everybody in the ACC has turned on them and they got the teeth of the schedule ahead. They just they got kicked by Clemson and Clemson has been faltering this season. So this this is an amazing story that’s just not going very well. And you just you just don’t flip a switch. You don’t just bring people in and say they had 10 weeks to prepare him in a system that’s very different. These kids are coming from all over the place. So it’s it’s messy. What’s your take on Coach Prime and his health? You know, I’m a Coach Prime fan. I I I really love the dude. Uh just the way he is as a leader and kind of his swagger, the whole thing. So, I obviously you feel for him and his health issues, but I was really surprised that he was out there on the field like the next day or maybe it was a day after the next from his surgery and he’s out there on the field with his team, with his assistant coaches. He’s making it work. You know, we all had doubts if he was going to stick around in Buffalo after his two sons graduated and moved on, but he seems like he’s committed. So, you know, just got to hope the health, you know, keeps him going. But, you know, Coach Prime and and Bellich, they’re rebuilding programs like almost from ground zero. Well, Prime certainly from ground zero, but with North Carolina, I mean, you when was the last time their football programs been relevant? I mean, you just always think of them as a basketball school. Yeah, but Mac M Brown’s been a pretty good head coach for a long period of time. So, we’ll see where this goes. There’s so many distractions now with Chapel Hill, Bill, and the Babe. I mean, can I in New England there were never distractions. He wouldn’t allow it. He can’t control these distractions. Well, she’s the ultimate shiny object, right? Oh, you think? Okay, that’s all things college football. Feel free to jump on board. Let’s go across the hallway. College basketball workouts kick off this coming week and we got a really interesting storyline here. Yeah, I am so excited for Aztec basketball, Lee. So, let’s let it rip. Here we go. Uh, The Athletic has put out its preeason conference look at all the different division one conferences and then put out a ranking for the mid majors. They rank Gonzaga and San Diego State one and two in the country for mid- major basketball powers, saying that these guys are probably going to be elite 8, maybe even Final Four teams. You know, Gonzaga under Mark F has just has made March Madness part of their regular season schedule. Uh Gonzaga’s got a really unique situation. They got the leading scoreer from Grand Canyon University. He’s transferred in. His name is Tyion Foster. He missed two years because of heart problems. Has now been medically cleared. He’s petitioned the NCAA for a waiver. Averaged almost 15 points a game last year at Grand Canyon. That waiver’s not come through yet. They expect to get it this past in this coming week. But boy, Gonzaga, if they add the leading scorer from Grand Canyon to go with Graham, the big center used to be at Wyoming with Braden Huff to go with Braden Smith to go with Adam Miller. My god, what a deep basketball team that that would be. That’s why Gonzaga is ranked number one in the mid majors. They got the Aztecs number two. You know, San Diego State has got every base covered. You want experience, productivity, guys that have been there, done it. Well, you got Bird and you got Guath and you got Heidi and you got Reese Waters coming off the red shirt injury season. You want young studs? Well, you got BJ Davis and then you got Compton and you got De Gorville. And then of course the guys that come in, the transfers led by Shawn Newman and Latrell Davis. I mean, they have every angle, every layer covered were great players. Brian Dutcher would tell you, well, we have to learn that we’re going to play together. No, he teaches defense. Historically, there are no egos at San Diego State. So, you got the Zags who are loaded. You got the Aztecs are loaded. and basketball full-scale workouts begin this coming week. You know, it’s interesting because, you know, obviously Gonzaga has been, you know, the top dog of the mid majors for a long time and other programs like Butler have kind of come in and gone away and, you know, but I think the Aztecs are sticking here. You know, I think they’re going to be a long-term play as one of the top three, top five mid majors and hopefully ranked in the top 25 every year. But I mean this Aztec team I I you know John Schaefer did an interview um just recently with Elie Harrington, one of the incoming freshman. What a mature young man he is, you know, and he understands what his role is with the Aztecs and and he wants to learn. He’s committed to playing defense. He knows he’s not going to necessarily be, you know, the the guy with the ball all the time. I mean, they they’re recruiting good character guys with the Aztecs that I think I think this if the Ducks or the how do they say they the stars align. The Aztecs could go deep in March. I I I think they have like that kind of a team. Well, I think the wild card question is how soon will Guath be ready to play because he’s not going to start camp and they’re saying the end of October and November and they’re going to have to ration out minutes etc. and hope there’s no flare up with the knee situation. But that that’s the only question mark they have. And that’s a good coaching staff. And you’re correct, John. I mean, they recruit good kids who are not bad dudes and they really play the system. So, this is going to be fun looking forward. And of course, they had a scrimmage against UCLA, but I wouldn’t weigh a lot there because we’re not sure the Aztecs are going to play all their kids or UCLA is going to play all their starters or we’re going to rotate guys. So, that, you know, that’s that’s one of the games coming up in 10 or 11 days, an exhibition game. So, college basketball feel free. How cool is that? Gonzaga San Diego State national recognition is the number one and two mid- majors ac across the country. Fans forum is available for you if you want to shoot a three-point shot and don’t airball any questions. Okay, we go from that. Let’s talk quickly about NBA because we’re just around the corner from the start of that. Yeah, the Lakers, the Clippers, they made some big additions to the roster. Who did best? Okay, here we go. So, we got the Lakers. Now, we’re what, 10 days out from the start of the season, and LeBron James has not practiced yet. Uh, nor has the big guy. And that’s a that’s kind of weird because we did not think there would be injury problems and now there are injury problems there. So, that that’s a huge question as to where the Lakers are in terms getting all these new new pieces to go with Luca and LeBron. Now, DeAndre Eton played in a preseason game. He was terrible. He was on the floor. His team was 20 minus 27 in point differential when he played. This guy is supposed to be a rim protector. I’m waiting for Laravia to come and show that he’s going to be able to shoot the three from outside because that’s one of the things that he did prior. Marcus Smart’s coming off an injury. They do think his history in Memphis and Boston, the kind of defense he plays. So, if these guys are the right acquisitions, this is going to be a pretty deep basketball team. But this whole thing with to me, I I just find the whole thing really absurd because he’s no longer what he was when he was with the Phoenix Suns. In terms of the Clippers, you got Kawawaii and there’s no doubt that you got a great center and but the question is, do you have enough to put around those guys? because you got Harden, but he needs to have the basketball in his hand. You got Zubac. Zubac, I think, is really an unsung hero. And you got Kawawaii, as long as you can keep him on the floor. That being said though, every one of these guys they brought in in the offseason, look at their resumes. Brook Lopez, he’s kind of cut from the same cloth that Zubac is. Beal, if they can keep him healthy, once upon a time with Washington, was a pretty good scoreer. Chris Paul final final reunion tour, still productive player. And I was like John Collins in Atlanta and John Collins in Utah scored points. I I I think the Clippers I think the Clippers have more guaranteed minutes and productivity from these new guys than the Lakers have. Lakers inherited I think some question marks along the way. I don’t know, John. Agree or disagree? Yeah, I mean I’m looking at these rosters and to me it is definitely the big guy, you know, not just big guy because he’s seven foot whatever tall, but he’s the most important signing because that guy has so much potential. I mean, when he played for the Arizona Wildcats, man, I he was just ferocious in the paint and would get every rebound, slam dunk every p lob ball to him. So if the Lakers could figure him out, if like LeBron James could set him aside and kind of get his head screwed on straight because Iton can be a little bit goofy and a little bit unfocused, you know, so if they can get him on track, you know, the Lakers could make a big leap. And the Clippers, I you look at these names, you know, Beal and Chris Paul and you know, Brook Lopez, they’re all good, solid veterans. Is that going to be enough? Is there is there any sizzle right now with the Clippers? And I don’t know if I know the answer. just a bunch of veterans that you hope none of them break down, that they’ll be around when the playoffs start. I think one of the biggest concerns is, man, there’s a lot of age on that roster. That that that might well be the oldest roster in the NBA. So, we got NBA season kicks off about a week and a half from now. Hey, you’re a basketball fan. Go ahead, shoot a three-point shot. Get on board. We go from that. It just started. NHL season just started couple nights ago. Let’s quickly touch bases on a few hockey stories, John. Yeah, the Ducks, the Gulls, is the years they make the playoffs mandate. Hacksaw says it’s got to be a playoff season. You know, I I just look at the makeup of the Anaheim Ducks. They’ve drafted all these kids. They force-fed all these kids. These kids have played pretty well. I am of the opinion they’re about to cross the threshold and become good. I’m of the opinion that Chris Krider who came he scored a lot of goals with the New York Rangers will be a differencemaker. Uh Muel Granland who scored 22 last year in Dallas, he comes in the front door. Ryan Poland’s kind of a grinder. He had 12 goals with the Philadelphia Flyers, you know, and they and they got Vrono, they got uh Kellum, they got Stro. So I I think from a veteran perspective, they added productivity. And that that’s important because otherwise just a year ago, the last couple years, all it was was Troy Terry, the young number one pick Leo Carlson, the development of Mason Mctavish, and last year’s rookie sensation who scored 20 goals, Kotakier. So I I I think the Ducks are right at the threshold of being a playoff team. like their defense pretty young led by the big money defenseman they just signed Jackson Lome and former San Diego Gaul Olan Zwiger I I think collectively that’s a pretty good team and and Luca Dostal who was down here with the goals for a couple years he became a star that’s why they traded John Gibson so I I like every aspect of what have seen uh with the Ducks it’s just now time to make it come together cross the threshold and become a playoff team in terms of the Gauls they’ve really gone through a bad stretch of time because the Ducks took all the young draft picks and put them in the NHL well before they were ready. But boy, I look I look at the Gulls as they sit here now. They open on Friday night in Coachella Valley and then come home a week from now. The Gulls have got four veteran AHL forwards. Guys have been in the league for five years, eight years, etc. That those these are proven commodity guys. Justin Bailey, Ryan Carpenter, Matt Phillips who came from Colorado, uh Cal Barker. That’s 54 goals from veteran proven guys in the American League. Then they’ve got at this point I’ve got four young forwards led by the Russian Setarov, Pasta, My Msak, Kfield. They got 81 goals from those kids last year. So now you got four veterans plus the kids scoring goals. I think their defense is really solid. They got a player from Scandinavia by the name of Stion Soulberg who did not make the big club. He’s here. I don’t know how long he’s going to be here, but you got Soulberg and Noah Warren, uh Tristan Lunau, Hines, and their goalending right now I I think is superb. They they just got Detroit Red Wing goalie Billy Huso who’s played the American League and has won a lot of games and is obviously played in the NHL. He’s going to be one of their starting goalenders here with Kelly Clang. So I I think the goals are going to be so different. Now the question is the Ducks leave all these guys here? Will the Ducks start calling people up? But at least coming out of the AHL gate, I think they got so many young athletes who’ve got a year under their belt who proved they could play here and now you’re adding even more. this kid from Scandinavia, Styon Soulberg, this defenseman, he’s gonna be in the NHL quick, but he’s starting starting here. So, I’m Hey, that’s the headline. That headline is true. Ducks, goals, equal playoffs. That’s what I’m expecting. Go ahead. You’re John. Okay. All right. I mean, it’s great. Hockey season starting. You know, I I want to ask you like you’re talking about the like let’s talk about the goals specifically because all their young talent was brought up to the the Ducks and you said they’ve signed they have four veterans, but what are the age ages of that goals roster? I’d imagine they’d have like some guys that are right around 20 years old and then probably some that are maybe in their mid to late 20s. Is that about right? Well, the veterans that I I mentioned at the top of the top of the list, the Ryan Carpenters, the Justin Bailey’s the world, those guys are 27 28, they are AHL lifers. They get called to the NHL if there’s been a major injury, but these guys are proven commodities here and they’re willing to play here. There’s a it’s an intangible about leadership that I think is of great value. So they they’ve really got every layer covered. And all the young guys that they’ve got, the center offs and posture offs, those those guys are 20 and 21 who cut their teeth last year and now supported by more veterans with a year’s experience under their young belt. And then you add into it what they’re what they’re bringing in. The kid from Scandinavia, I think, is a fine player. So they seem to have every layer covered. We’ll see if the Ducks lead these kids here, but I at this point they’ll be competitive, I think, right out of the gate because they got vested veterans and now they got another breed of pretty good young players. Nice. Hey, any updates on the Kings? Kings lost their first game, came back and won their second game, and their season has started early. They’re one and one out of the gate, but that’s an older team. Has to win right now. has to has to find a way to get around the Edmonton Oilers because they’ve lost to them four straight years in the postseason. So, it has to happen now for them to go deep in the Stanley Cup playoffs because the Kempes, the Copitars, the Drew Dowies of the world, that’s an awful lot of age that’s on that roster and they’ve been so good, so close, but they haven’t been able to win in the first round of that has to change now. Kings, Clippers, a lot of old dudes on those rosters. Yeah, very much so. Clippers much older uh than the LA Kings. Okay, John, final topic on the table here. Hacksaw headlines. Yeah. Let’s go to the highspeed sports wire. Got some uh sports media news. Golf. Do we really need this golf? Do you remember the Skins game back in the day? Golf. Do you remember at one point there was a very special weekend show that and now this goes back to the 60s and 70s. Anyhow, they’re bringing back the skins game. Amazon Prime Video is going to stage in November their own skins game. Now, the history of this event, John, this goes back to when Nicholas played Arie Palmer and it was a huge event. Nobody had ever done it before on TV, probably black and white TV that era. And then it was followed by the next round of Skins games, Tiger Phil. That became a novel thing. After a while, a little bit wore off, but it hasn’t hasn’t been on TV in recent time. They just announced Amazon Prime just announced Skins Game in November. It’s going to be Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Thomas, Xander Schoffley, and Keegan Bradley. Okay, there’s no doubt that those are popular guys and some of these guys have had good seasons. I just ask, why not Rory? Why not Scotty Sheffler? Why not Dshambo? So, do we really need skins game? If it’s going to be skins game, shouldn’t it be the hottest commodity guys playing for skins rather than list of guys? So, that’s that’s one story. Second story is this NASCAR story, the lawsuit over charters and the the antitrust lawsuit Michael Jordan and Front Row Racing have filed against the other 11 teams and NASCAR’s France family. and it’s going to court and it’s going to be bitter. Yesterday, get this, four legendary owners of NASCAR teams, Joe Gibbs Racing, Roger Penske, Richard Chilus, Rick Hendrick, all went public and implored the France family to sit down and settle this before it goes to court, saying it’s going to go to court and NASCAR is going to lose its way. It’s going to be catastrophic to the future of racing. They’re of the opinion, the legendary owners are of the opinion. The charter system, how everybody buys a franchise, has to stay in effect. The revenue sharing from the charters has to be changed. That’s why this antitrust lawsuits occurred because Michael Jordan said, “You’re screwing all these teams because all the profits are going to the France family that owns Speedway and owns all the events and the tracks, etc.” So you got you got the four greatest owners of modern day NASCAR, Penske, Childris, Hendrickk, and Gibbs saying, “We need to solve this and it need to the France family needs to sit down before this trial starts.” That’s this is fascinating. A U-turn that yeah, the charter system has to stay in place because it gives a structure, but the France family has to change the payout. So this is a fascinating story going forward. And I bring it up. We get so much response from NASCAR fans on our viewership of all the video clips. They produce absolutely amazing stuff. This is a U-turn from the legendary owners. John, you big on the Skins game if it’s not the marketing names. And what are your thoughts on this NASCAR story? Well, on the Skins game, I’ve always wondered this. Why do they call it the Skins game? You know, it just always struck me as odd. Do you know the story behind that, Lee? I don’t. It’s the first time in my life I said I don’t know, but I’m sure somebody will. Somebody will send us some information as you play hole. You know, you win a hole with a value to the hole and then the money transfers to the next hole and you’re like you’re playing for skins. I don’t Yeah, that’s the best explanation I can give you. I remember when I was in my 20s, my buddy and I went to the bowling alley and we played skins per frame for beers and we got cut off pretty quick at the bowling alley bar. Um, but the the other thing is that charter system in NASCAR, okay, it gives us structure. you. What it does is it keeps competitors out. It keeps other people from sharing in their pie of money. It’s a way to block competition. It’s like a monopoly system that’s, you know, organized by three or four powerful owners. So, you think it’s an antitrust violation? It might be. Yeah. Gibbs and Pensky say we need the charter system. The funding, the revenue share has to be changed. And don’t you dare go to court because you might lose this case. That Yeah. you know, they they probably will lose that case. Yeah. This Yeah. So, they got to they got to straighten it out. Yeah. This U-turn in the middle of this whole war uh by by these legendary owners. This is a real significant story. Okay, John, we got limited time. We got a lot of people from here out to the highway uh that want to join us in fans forum. Podcast brought to you by Dixie Line Lumber and Home Centers. Nine locations to serve you in San Diego. John, we’ll take as many as we can in the next group of minutes. Fire away. Fire away. Okay. Uh let’s go to I’m going to start from the top. We got a lot of different people on board. And uh here’s one from Thomas. He goes, “I’m a Dodger fan and right now I’m thinking it’ll be the Phillies and five. I don’t know that I could buy that. Both these lineups can scare you. There’s no doubt about it. Philadelphia did not fold their tent even though the top of the batting order didn’t do anything in games one and two. They were miserable.” Uh what what what Schwabber, Harper, Trey Turner did. and then Schwber just went went crazy. Uh the most intriguing thing to me game five they’re going to give the ball back to Otani after Otani’s dominant outing in game one and that game five will be in Philadelphia. So I think anybody could win this. This could be wide open. Now Philadelphia run out of pitching. That’s the big question. Uh because Ranger Suarez went five strong. Nola gave him a couple of three credible innings. Uh, but they’re throwing Christopher Sanchez now in this this game tonight. So, who’s left that’s going to be able to pitch if there is a game five? All hands on duck. You’re not going with a bullpen day on game five, are you? So, keep it keep an eye on that story line. John, next question. Okay, next question. Let’s keep trucking and we’ll go to our friend Casey. Hey, good afternoon, guys. Hacksaw, you think my LA Kings will get a deal done with Adrien Kempe anytime soon on an extension and how you see the Kings doing this year? I think the Kings are a complete team. Got to stay free of injury. You know, they lost Drew Dowy for a large chunk of last season. He did come back towards the end of the season. Uh but they’ve got to find a way to get around all things Conor McDavid and the Edmonton Arlers who are really really good hockey team. Uh but it has to happen. They’ve just got so many so much age, so much mileage on a lot of these players. And this is Kopitar’s final season before he goes off into the sunset. So Kings are really good. Kings got a lot of firepower. Uh Kevin Fiala has eventually it took him a while has really evolved into a very trustworthy goal scorer. Uh but they they just they got to stay free of injury. But if anybody’s going to topple Edmonton, it’s probably I think the Kings have probably got more firepower than anybody. The Kings have more firepower than Winnipeg. Vancouver is no longer what Vancouver was. Dallas is scary, but Dallas has lost some players too there and they got some injury situations. So Kings Kings are right there. All right, John. Next one. Next one. Keep rolling. Let’s go here to Scott. Machado’s no leader and neither is Tatis. This is like a common theme by the way. Um until someone steps up in that role, it will never happen. Well, at the end of the day, um it’s a long grind of a season. There’s no doubt that in season the kind of numbers that Tatis puts up say star and there’s the kind of consistent numbers that Manny puts up say legendary superstar. Although what he did last the last two months of this past season, he did 206 in August and September. He’s been paid a lot of money. And then he did absolutely nothing. What is he? 1 for 12 in postseason. Most important time of the year. Um you know, some guys wake up and they’re old men. Um but they they haven’t won. That’s the thing. They haven’t won postseason and that’s the most important time of the year. Uh have they done magnificent season things regular season? Yeah. Under AJ? Yes. but they’ve never never won an NLCS, never been to a World Series. And I that that’s where you mark the greatness of your franchise and the greatness of your players on the franchise. I just have I just have reservations. Have they shot their bullet? I And John laughs at me all the time because I say the window to be good. Starting to close and maybe it’s closed. I mean, they got holes in his pitching staff everywhere. And they’re gonna have some limitations financially, too. And then and then when Tatis and Machado aren’t playing well and Croninworth’s not playing well, I mean, the big money guys win a combined four for 44 in this playoff series where they got sent on vacation. John, you got a response? Well, yeah. Tatis is definitely not a leader. I mean, he’s like like Will Meers, you know, he’s just a young kid and having fun, got a lot of talent. Machado is a leader but in a different way you know he’s not a cheerleader by any means but he’s like the tough guy leader you know but like like we’ve been saying you need more than that you know and and honestly you really want the leadership from Schult ultimately that’s where you and I I’ve kind of liked some of the things I’ve seen from him but you would hope that you know we talked about how the the Dodgers usually sign character guys for the most part so do we talk about Brian Dutcher doing the same thing as San Diego I mean, so you got to add some of those dudes and there are a lot of those dudes that are already on the roster. I mean, Musgrove is the classic example. So, what what can they do to, you know, is it is it a leadership problem or do they just need to play better? I mean, I mean, in the end, that’s what it’s all about. So, yeah, it’s it’s a confusing time for Padre fans. Tell you what, November going to the Winter Baseball meetings December, they’re going to have to add and they have to move money around. They have to figure out a way financially to make this happen. Okay, John, let’s move on. Okay, and here goes Robert. He goes, “John, you’re a Padres’s, Dodgers, Giants fan, now a Phillies fan. Hacksaw would say back in the mighty 690, extra 690 days, you’re like a flag. You’re waving the other way.” Hey, Robert. Robert, he stunned me because he’s always given me heat for what I wear on this podcast. Now, I have an explanation today because it’s 27 degrees outside my cottage in upstate New York and I yet I came to work. uh but came to work prepared for cold weather. But uh yeah. Yeah. John’s a flag waiver. He just kind of comes and goes, comes and that’s okay. He’s he’s done a great job on this podcast. If you like it, great. He created it. If you don’t like it, blame him because he’s the reason I’m doing this podcast. Let me let me set the record. First of all, Robert, I am not a Dodger fan. Okay? I mean, my I remember my mom talking to me when I was a little boy. He says, “We don’t like the Dodgers and we don’t like the Rams and Lakers, but we really don’t like the Dodgers.” Because I grew up as a Giants fan. Then came down here to San Diego, went to college, became Padres’s, but I’m wearing this Phillies hat. Obviously, I’m poking Dodger fans with this Philly hat, and I think it’s fun. But the other part of I love this uniform of the Phillies, you know, this maroon, the uh and this this type of the P logo and those powder blue road unis are one of the best uniforms in Major League Baseball. and we saw them last night. We’re going to see them again tonight. So, I I want the Phillies to win tonight because I want to see this thing go game five because there’s two big teams with tons of big hitters. You know, as a Padre fan, we’re thinking, “Wow, these these other teams can hit the ball. We haven’t seen that in San Diego, you know.” So, yeah, I I’m I’m I’m a I’m still on board with my Padres’s and Giants, but I’m I’m poking you guys with this Philly hat. You guys, please send me a thank you note because I didn’t wear my Dodger hoodie. I didn’t want anybody to have a heart attack while watching this podcast. Okay, let’s move on. Robert, thanks for joining us. John, go ahead. Okay, let’s go to John. He goes, “AJ was the bright spot in 2015 when it was a dark time for San Diego sports fans. The Chargers had their foot out the door. The Potteries have been stuck in backto backto back losing seasons, but AJ brought players and headlines to San Diego. Has the talent worked out? I’m sure he’d like to have players like Trey Turner, James Woods, CJ Abrams, Mackenzie Gore, and Robert Hassel wearing brown and gold. Well, his currency is the farm system and that’s the way he does his business. But at the end of the day, we have had five years of just unbelievable Padre baseball at Petco Park and the record attendance speaks volumes of of the methodology that he uses. However, that being said, when the wife has the credit card, the bill does come due. And the bill has come due now because he has no farm system again. And he’s got all these older players with still big money contracts that he’s going to be on the hook for. and an ownership group that’s trying to pay off past debts and recoup money lost. And it’s a tough call. This is going to be a really interesting November and December. But at the end of the day, the reason Petco Park rocks is because of what AJ Per has done from a baseball standpoint. So, as I said at the top of the show, I don’t want to hear anything about reduction in payroll and I don’t want to hear anything about changing leadership at this point in time. However, his creative genius, he’s got to go find pitching and he’s got to find either a first baseman with a big bat or left fielder or the big bat. John, that’s my summary. Well, did you see the letter from uh Padre’s owner John Sidler? Yes. That he published and you know the we were expo our weaknesses were exposed in the playoffs. I mean, my understanding is is that Schilt is a lock to come back and pller pretty much a lock. So, they’re going to be making changes to the roster, but I don’t think there’s any risk that AJ Prowler is going to be let go. I don’t think so at this point in time. Uh, but they’re going to have to move dollars around and there going to be some guys probably have to exit, but then AJ has always had guys exit or he’s let guys leave or traded them away. So, it’s going to be really fascinating. John, listen, we were up against it. We promised everybody we’d make room for Dodger Phillies playoff baseball, which is just around the corner. Just a reminder, this podcast will back on the air Monday at 1:30. I’ll be back in town at the castle to try to help him dress better. We hope you will be with us, too. Calling 816-870 successful is crazy. Only in SD.
Madre fan wearing a Phillies cap is crazy work🤡🤣🤣🤣
…..the extreme capitalistic views from John are completely expected from big business supporters and a current certain fascist in power.in a large country.
Such irresponsible blather about trickle down economics proved itself the big joke in the 80s during ol' Uncle Nuclear's reign of terror & irresponsibility.
How sad! At least, take some responsibility…..
