DEPTH: Pelicans’ Bench SHINES in Preseason | Will Sadiq Bey, Jeremiah Fears be the X-FACTOR?

The Pelicans won again over the weekend in Australia, beating the Southeastern uh sorry, Southeast Melbourne Phoenix by a score of 12792. But it wasn’t Zion Williamson. It was guys like Sadique Bay, Jeremiah Fears, and others who stepped up kind of speaking to that Pelicans depth strategy that they’ve wanted. I’ll tell you why Sadi Bay in particular can be really key to the Pelicans this season. We’ll break down the game from Jeremiah Fears, look at some of the other depth pieces, and I want to break down a bunch of things that I really loved from Eve Mei, even though he didn’t get the start. So, we got a lot to cover in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. So, let’s get into the win over Southeast Melbourne Phoenix 12792. Again, just a wild success story. Pelicans going to Australia playing these two games. The fans, from what I’ve been told, have been outstanding. Everyone has enjoyed this trip so much. Really great outreach from the team, the league to try and grow the game elsewhere. They are NBA crazy in Australia. If you’re listening from Australia, thank you so much for tuning in and just thanks for making this a big success for everybody involved. So, Zion Williamson played 15 minutes. No, Trey Murphy with foot soreness. Don’t worry about that. Herb Jones still held out with the ankle injury. Shouldn’t be that big of a deal from what I’ve been told, but we’ll see. It was guys like Sadiq Bay, Jordan P, Jeremiah Fears, and others really stepping up in this one. And you know what? That’s kind of big. Sadique Bay was often thought as a throwin to the Jordan Pool CJ McCullum trade. He hasn’t played basketball in 18 months, but he is a skilled player who had a fantastic game. The everyday know I was high on him. I wanted the Pelicans to draft him instead of Kyro Lewis Jr. in that draft, I believe, and was really thrilled um to see him come to the team. a little bit skeptical of what he’ll provide given the injury, but when you saw him play like he did in this one, 21 points, leading the team, four of six from three, six defensive rebounds, three assists, you realize he can unlock so much for New Orleans when he has nights like this. Let’s start with the three-point shooting because that’s the biggest thing here. Four of six from three. This is a team that will struggle to get up a high number of three-point shots. When Zion Williamson, your best player, doesn’t take threes, that’s going to kind of create that sort of problem. When your highest usage guy, isn’t taking threes, it just means you’re not going to get threes during those kind of minutes and when he has the ball. So therefore, your three-point number, three-point attempts per game go down. It’s a natural thing. So you need to find other areas, other ways to make up that three-point deficit because look, that’s a very important thing in the league whether you like it or not. So Bay going four for six from three, that’s huge. That’s huge. Look, I love Herb Jones. Sadique Bay starting these two games basically in place of Herb Jones. Herb Jones doesn’t usually take six three-point attempts per game. We’re also not necessarily expecting him to go four for six should he do it. And I’m not advocating for Sadique Bay to start or anything like that over Herb Jones, but having a guy like this that’s a little bit different that can give you that offense is a really good piece to have. And for a Pelicans team that’s been preaching depth, and I’ve been a little bit skeptical of that. They coming in like this, you go, “Oh yeah, look at what he can do here.” But he does other things well than just the three-point shooting, which is going to be important for the Pelicans to try and get to 43 point attempts per game, even though I don’t think they will hit that number. You know, he had three assists in this game, too. And when you watch them, they kind of fit into what the Pelicans are trying to do. You know, he his first assist was to Jordan Hawkins early on in the shot clock. Within like seconds of getting in the half court, he fired a pass to the corner for Hawkins, who had cut baseline off a pin down screen. Hawkins was open, caught it, turn, shoot, boom, made it. Having Bay able to kind of see that and make those reads and make those passes in your early offense. That’s playing with pace. That’s them getting a bunch of shot attempts up, which is what they’re trying to do. So, he fits in with that. The other two assists he had were in transition. You know, quickly running the fast break, he can make the right read and keep that going. Being deadly in the fast break is a very important thing. the Pelicans want to get out and they want to run off of turnovers and having Baye be a cog in all of that is actually a really really great thing. He really showed that. Then the defensive rebounding is important too. This is a team that was just unbelievably bad at rebounding last season. And we’ll talk more about this in the Mei versus Looney battle here because Mei showed a lot of something here that I’m excited to talk about. But also Looney did another thing better than Mei did which is going to make who’s starting a very difficult decision. But six defensive boards Trey isn’t the best rebounder. Herb Jones isn’t the best rebounder. If you have Sadique Bay who can be a good strong rebounder for you on the wing, that’s important. You know, I’m going to be curious to see how he does defensively. He has a bit of a reputation as a good defender, but actually hasn’t really been. I’m curious to see what that will look like as we start to play NBA teams in preseason. But Sadique Bay doing this, the three-point shooting is going to open things up for Zion Williamson, Jordan Pool, Jeremiah Fears, and others. The assist just means he’s fitting into the rhythm of the offense, the flow of the offense, and helping the Pelicans achieve what they want to achieve. So that’s early offense. That’s three-point shots. All that’s great. And then if you can defensive rebound and terminate end possessions, defensive rebounding is defense. That’s a really encouraging sign. You know, speaking of the depth here, you also saw a lot from Jordan Hawkins. He fits into what the Pelicans want to do with that early offense, too. He had a bunch of shot attempts in this game. Um 13, which I think was it was the most on the team. Two of eight from three. Not great, but 14 points because he was trying to score in other ways. Cutting, driving, just kind of trying to fit in and kind of find what his role is going to be. He can be more than a shooter. He’s not a great defender. you know, he plays a little bit bigger than you think when it comes to him. But, you know, if your three-point shot’s not falling and you basically put up zeros across the other stat line, you better contribute in other ways in terms of scoring by driving, by attacking. He definitely did that in this game. There’s some depth there. He looked good, I thought, actually. Just moved well, which was encouraging. You know, he can be a depth piece for them, too. Micah Peavey is another guy that can play on the wing and kind of add a lot of that as well. He finished with eight points on three of seven shooting. Two of five from deep there is good. Three rebounds, one assists, two blocks. He looks like a a good enough, an adequate enough NBA defender as a rookie. That’ll go a long way. That means he’ll get minutes under head coach Willie Green. It’s finding the other ways, the other things to contribute that he needs to do. And you’ve started to see that a little bit from him. Again, really good in transition in the fast break. highly encouraged by what we’ve seen from Micah Peavey so far. And look, this isn’t a knock these, but these aren’t NBA teams. Keep kind of all this that we’re saying. Little bit of a grain of salt till we see it a little bit more. And that’s probably going to drag into the regular season. But all three of those guys, Bay, Hawkins, Peavey, they can shoot the three ball. Pelicans need those type of guys that you trust to shoot threes. That alone is making me intrigued by everybody there, maybe more so than I had been otherwise. So that was really encouraging to see. They’re going to need to shoot threes around Zion Williamson. They’re aided a little bit in this getting that 40 number, 40 attempts per game by no brain Ingram who didn’t want to shoot a ton of threes. So now his production goes away and you replace it with guys that will do that, you know, a Jordan Pool into others. So there there’s optimism that they can get those kind of shots up, but you got to make those shots, too. And all three of those guys have proven they can kind of do that. I’m really excited to see what Sadique Bay is going to do because it seems like he’s going to be a guy heavily in the rotation. One of the first subs in. He really showed something in this game and that was just highly encouraging. We’re barely going to talk about Zion Williamson in this show which is kind of shocking truthfully. Played 15 minutes. He looked good. I don’t know what else you need me to say here. Eight points on 305 shooting. Like eight defensive boards, nine total rebounds in those 15 minutes is good. see what he does against NBA people. But he’s looking as good as advertised here. But it was Sadique Bay in my opinion who stole the show as proving he’s maybe more than just a throwaway piece in that Jordan pool trade. We also had a new starter, Jeremiah Fears. How’d the rookie do? I was highly encouraged by this. I’ll tell you why. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans. Part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. So, let’s keep talking about the Pelicans win over Southeast Melbourne Phoenix 12792. Jeremiah fears getting the start. I loved this. Why not? This is the time to do it. Let the young guy figure things out. Go out and play. And after, you know, a game game one where he was kind of more process over results, the process was correct. the results didn’t come, you know, basically like 24 hours later, less than that, you know, a little bit more than that, he put in a really good performance, I thought, getting his first start. He finished five of 10 from the field for 12 points on the night. This was all pretty encouraging in my opinion here. You know, he even made a three. The first shot he took was a three. It went down. You like to see that first one go in and it really opens things up that you could potentially do. So, I was very impressed with what we saw from Jeremiah Fears here and hope to see basically more of it. Again, he lived up to the Zero Fears name, the Zero Fears hype. He basically just was playing downhill and attacking every single time. And that’s what you want him to do. That’s exactly what you want him to do. I’m looking at his assists right now because I want to talk about those here in a second. And you see the playmaking out of the pick and roll. He had three assists in this one. Two of them go because he drew two defenders to him while he was driving, which is exactly that. The third one was on a layup to Jordan P who got it in transition. But you see it from Fears is doing all of the correct things and that’s again highly encouraging. The finishing will get better. He’s slightly undersized. You can see that in his game. He’s not an above the rim finisher and one of the first layups he took like he was like an inch or two taller that goes in. But the thing is he adjusts really well to that and you start to see the finesse in his game and the touch in his game. You know, a lot of times driving using his long wingspan to hold the ball out to create distance from the defender that’s over. You can’t really see it on the show. I’m not acting this out well. Something like that. And you the defender’s over here. Okay, I give up. It works. And he knows how to use his body. He knows how to use his speed. And his handles are very very good for his age. And that’s going to lend him to a lot of crafty finishing at the NBA level. One-point driving, you saw kind of that behind the back move he did. He dribbled, put the ball behind his back to keep it away from a defender, create room, and then score at the rim. At times, he’s going to start to feel how to draw contact at the NBA level and he’ll start going to the line more. He had a very, very high free throw rate in college, one of like the top three basically for draft eligible players. And that’s what you want to see from him. Getting to the free throw line can be a superpower for this team. I’ve often talked about how NBA teams kind of set what their win conditions are. How do we win the majority of our games and that’s what you just try and go and do. And you you care a little bit less about the opponent and more control what you can control. Here’s how we win. This is what we’re best at. You know, for Golden State Warriors at times it’s been shoot more threes, make more threes than your opponents, right? Like that’s what it can be. Pel’s win condition can definitely be get to the line a ton and make your free throws. And you will see Jeremiah Fears start to do that. And so for Willie Green to trust Jeremiah Fears with the start after a rocky shooting game in his game one, I think says that Willie Green is also showing growth too, right? This is what it’s it’s telling you here. Now, preseason, it’s harmless. You can do this. It doesn’t hurt you. But Willie Green normally would just drop a rookie and do something else. But he was like, you know what, let’s put put Jeremiah Fears in. Let’s give him the opportunity to show it here. He knows he’s going to need to play rookies like Fierce Queen when he’s healthy and then Mah Peavey. And so for him to try and invest in Jeremiah fears like this, the organization to invest in Jeremiah fears like this, that’s highly encouraging. Joe Dumar said, you know, the way these rookie seasons are going to go, it’s going to be determined by the rookies. It’s not predetermined by head coach Willie Green. It’s not predetermined by anybody else. And if you want these guys to feel fearless, to play their game, and to be able to grow, to take mistakes, chances, whatever you need them to do, they need to know that I won’t get benched if I screw something up. They want to feel like they have an opportunity to compete and earn their minutes. And if they do, they’re going to show out and they’re going to play to their best of their ability, and they’re going to play hard more than anything, which is what exactly the Pelicans are trying to do here. This is the type of move that can instill a ton of confidence in a young rookie like Jeremiah Fierce. and he kind of repaid it here. Wasn’t the most efficient game, but 12 points on 10 shot attempts is fine. That’ll work here. You know, the assists and seeing the playmaking out of the pick and roll. Pel don’t really have great rollman here. And if he can kind of figure out that just driving coming off of a screen where he’s got some space, kicking it out to open three-point shooters because he’s drawing two to the ball. That’s the archetype of, you’ve heard me say this a lot if you’re an everydayer and it’s an important thing, an advantage creator at the NBA. That can be kind of any position. A guy who just creates an advantage for your team. You’re already seeing Jeremiah Fears do that to start. That’s not something that Sadique Bay does. He might make his threes, but he’s not an advantage creator. It’s a guy like Jeremiah Fierce with his speed, with the finishing at the, you know, the rim pressure that he has really kind of elevates this team with it. you know, whether he starts or not during the regular season, right? It’s we’re not anticipating that he does. This is someone that will be a key piece going forward for them, even if he has a rocky first year. I think they really believe in him. They’re really trying to invest in him to see the growth from him. And giving him the start in this is highly encouraging to me from that perspective. You easily could have started Jose Alvarado. You easily could have started someone like Micah Peavey in there in, you know, in place of Trey Murphy. You could have put in Mi Looney and run Zion at the three if you really wanted to, I think. But to put in the rookie shows they know what they need to do with him. They need to invest in him. They’re doing that and he looked really good in this game. This is what you want to see from a rookie here. I’m going to have more next week on him. um that sorry this week on him as I’m doing a big like trust me I got a huge spreadsheet with like tons of data and other things here that I am in the process of going through to be able to kind of explain what to expect from him this year. I’m looking forward to doing that show. Of note in terms of depth and guards, Jose Alvarado left the game with what looked like a knee injury on a non-cont kind of play. We don’t when I’m recording this I have not seen an update about it and that is concerning. Hopefully, it’s not going to be anything big, but I don’t see what the Let me see if there’s if I might have missed something. If we have an update on the injury, he did not return to the game. Hopefully, it’s no big deal here. Um, but yeah, hate seeing that because his three-point shooting has been good and I really hope that that injury is not anything that bad. He did walk under his own power, so that’s been that was kind of important, but don’t have much more of an update there. But that was a scary looking injury. He tends to be okay, but I don’t know. Hopefully, it’s nothing big. Hopefully, we hear an update from that soon. If there’s an update and I missed it, let me know in the comments down below. What did you think about Jeremiah Fears? Let me know about that in the comments down below, too, because I thought he looked great. The Zero Fears jersey, are you going to buy one? Like, there’s a good chance. I think that’s such a great one here. Um, let me know in the comments down below on YouTube. Coming up next, I want to go back to the center battle because you saw some really, really interesting things from Eve Mei in this game. Like really creative, important things for his development as a player. But maybe you start Looney and I’ll explain why. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Cavon Looney getting the start here again. And I get it. The Pelicans need to focus on defensive rebounding. Looney is a probably a better def uh defensive rebounder right now than Eve Mei is. So, you know what? I get it in this, you know, context. That’s that’s an important thing to kind of consider here that Looney can go up and do a very good job on the defensive glass. didn’t really play a bunch in this game. Didn’t really need to play a bunch in this game. Just 10 minutes, but getting the start. But it was Eve Mei who really showed out in my opinion. He’s not the strongest defensive rebounder. And again, for a team that sucked, let’s call it what it is at defensive rebounding last year that they need a guy that they can trust down low with that. Messi has the tools to become that kind of player. And he is just constantly improving here. You see it from him. five of six from the field in this one for 10 points. He said he wanted to get good around the basket. You’re seeing that happen so far. You know, he would two offensive boards, four defensive boards. You you’d love him to just hoover up the defensive glass, but I think he can get there. And when he does, you feel really good about him as a starter. All of his shots, by the way, at the rim in the restricted area. That’s an encouraging thing, too. Just be a lead at that. But you also see a lot of the skill from him. You know, I want to focus on a stat that you wouldn’t normally think about with Eve Mei here, and that is three assists in this game. Three assists in this one for me were very good. And when you watch him play and playmake, I’m highly encouraged by the type of player he could blossom into. He does a very good job of playmaking out of the pick and roll. You know, his first assist went to Mike at Peavey for a three-point jump shot where he sets a screen for Jordan Pool, gets it on the roll, draws a defender, and then kicks it out to the open man when he realizes Pavey, who has relocated, his defender isn’t following him to playmake out of kind of a short roll situation like that is great. On the second assist that he had, it’s a two-man game with Jordan Pool where Passes him the ball up at the top of the three-point line. It’s a dribble handoff action back to Pool and it just creates space for P to get down low and and do the thing essentially. And then his final one is in transition. He’s running the court by himself. Hits the the middle of the paint essentially realizes they’re trying to take it away from him because it’s not an exact man advantage situation. Mike Peavey just cuts baseline, lobs it up to him for an alleyoop dunk. That type of playmaking is not something that I don’t I I don’t know if Cavon Looney can do. And having just a skilled big man, you know, a creative big man, a somewhat playmaking big man is a bit of a gamecher for the New Orleans Pelicans. So, they’re going to need to really try and figure out is it better to go with Kavon Looney who maybe can handle the defensive rebounding duties a little bit better than Mei or is it better to go with me give up some of the defensive rebounding and kind of get a bunch of other stuff too. We’ve also seen Mi doing a really good job of blocking shots. Um he had two in this game I think three in the first game. Again, it’s not NBA opponents so there’s something to be said for that. But you’ve seen the growth from him. If he can be this playmaking, creative shot blocking big man, even if he’s never going to be an elite defensive rebounder, even though he has the tools to do that, I I’m really intrigued by the player that he can become. This is a lot of growth that you’re seeing from him from last year. And that’s the, you know, number one thing people have said about him is he learns. You know, you show him what to do, he processes that information quickly and goes out and kind of puts it into action. And so that is exactly what you want to see from me right now. You know, both these games big success for New Orleans in terms of just showing the talent that you needed to see, showing kind of what they’re trying to build here with the offense, trying to be a little bit more creative, unpredictable than Zion Centric. Mei can fit into that. So overall, I don’t know, pretty happy with what we’ve seen from these two preseason games. Now we get, you know, couple of days off before we get that. Don’t forget about back to basketball on Friday. I will be there. I hope you’re going to be there, too. It’s going to be a lot of fun. As always, I’m your host JakeMadison, Nola Jake on Twitter. 1. I think they looked good. Im thinking Missi will edge out looney for the start during the season. He looks too good to stifle with low minutes

  2. I agree. I believed that Bey was thrown in to make the salaries match. He hadn’t played in like 2yrs. He looked good. He would be a huge bench piece. A solid player.

  3. It concerns me that we gave up 55 Points in the first half against what can only be characterized as a JV team compared to a Summer League Team. That was before we pulled a couple of 'starters'. You can talk offense all you want, but it's defense that wins in this league.

If we are going to analyze the team's performance, you can't just focus on one end of the court. Jake, I am one critic who needs to see our team against the 'big boys' before I will be silenced.

  4. You were speaking to the depth, but I actually thought Zion was more impressive in this game than the first game. 8 pts, 9 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl, 2 blk is some serious productivity in only 15 minutes.

  5. I’m worried about Jose. You have his jersey hanging up behind you and you don’t even mention that knee injury he got in the game that had him go back to the locker room. Do better Jakie

  6. Every dayer 🇦🇺 just flew back from Melbourne after watching the SE Mel game. Bey and Hawkins were out early practicing 3s and Bey came out firing. Liked Missi and Karlo in this one too. Lets go!

  7. Bey was drafted by Troy Weaver in Detroit. Fears looks bigger than what he is listed at. He reminds me of Jrue, a bit faster, but not as strong. He fits next to Jose or Poole, which I thought wasn't an option.
