New York’s got the puck near the back end. Way too much congestion. Watch that as a full footwork to kick it away from and that’s stopped. And look at this. They really ratcheted up the intensity here. Scores and they are on the board quickly in this one. Well, it’s because they were ready, James. I mean, the first five strides right from puck drop were urgent. And when you’re aggressive and you are urgent on the puck, you find a way to put it in. Well, James, this is on and off and stick in a hurry and it had to be because he is right next to the goalender. He’s grade A and he buries it. [Applause] New York’s got to be pleased with the way they’ve started tonight. Look at this. Already the first goal of the game and just trying to take that crowd out of it. Well, yeah, and that’s exactly what they’ve done. And that would have been the message from the coach earlier today, James, because you want to make sure that you set the tone, you control the pace of play, and you find a way to get on the board first. Here’s a chance stopped by the goalender. Puck grabbed by Sha Sturken. We’ll get a face off after the puck stays covered up. Well, I really like the way that this game has started for them here, James. And a reason why is that they’re physically engaging. Just have a look at this hit right here. You want to drive play. You want to impose your physical will right from the start of the game. You want to be prepared right from puck drop. That hit right there tells me they’re ready. New York’s come to play tonight. He’s in alone. Another break away. No, this is a highly entertaining game here, James, as a puck goes one way and then the other. It’s a track meet out there. Coaches certainly won’t like it because it means that neither team is playing strong defense. New York’s had the shot advantages and they also have the lead. And they take possession off the draw here in their own end. And here’s the pass to Troche. New York’s on the attack. Oh, makes a save. Just not enough to keep it out. Takes the pass. Great hit on the play taken by He scores. Well, talk about a friendly ping right there. Oh, yeah. It’s all about the bounces, isn’t it, James? And you got to get the right one. And that one is in his favor. Oh, I think they’re hearing footsteps out there, James. I mean, you look up and you see him barreling down on you. You know the physicality and how engaged he is with using his body and he does exactly that. Separates body from puck and then is creative enough to make a play for that goal. I I’d be running. [Applause] The Rangers continue to lead midway through the first. They have really put on an offensive clinic so far. Miller’s won the draw center. They go on the attack from the left side. We’re going to get to watch it again here on the replay, James. But man, oh man, when you find the puck like that and you have the instincts and urgency and the desperation to attack it, that is one heck of a save. Takes the feed in the middle of the neutral zone into the corner of the attacking area. And a nice takeaway in the defensive end by Troche. I get when you’re losing, James, that you want to get something going. You want to spark your team. You have the puck on your stick, but sometimes you can try and do too much. And I think that’s a product of that as he loses the puck. Sent into the offensive zone. The Rangers have it now. Working the puck deep inside their own end. Takes a hit. He goes down to the ice and off the pop. Nice stop by Curry. Put away as he went all in on that one. Scores. Oh, that was a beauty. There’s something about the jump to his legs on this shift here, James. He just knew that he was going to drive play. And that’s exactly what he did by winning the loose puck battle and then taking it to the net for the goal. [Applause] New York’s clearly had a few energy drinks prior to puck drop because they’re already up by a pair here in the first. I mean, you can play with an edge and play with a chip, but when you play dangerous and dirty, you’re going to have to respond to your actions. Payback time, sir. I kind of like the response here just coming to the aid of a fallen teammate. Well, yeah, and it’s the way that it happened, right? You know, they don’t think it was a clean hit, and so now all of a sudden, they want retribution. They want to let them know that they can’t take action this way. And you know, they duked it out. And that’s exactly what’s happening right now. I’d like to call this a quiet shot, James. And that means is the goalender can see it. So he’s listening for it and it buzzes right by him because he cannot catch up to it. Can’t find it with his eyes and can’t find it with his body. But how about the will to get to those tough areas? I mean, that’s what it’s all about. You can have the skill, but you got to have the will. The Rangers are laying the smackdown on the opposition tonight as we near the intermission, but it can’t come soon enough at one end of the ice. Well, yeah. You know that their opponent certainly wants it. An opportunity to reset and catch their breath. But for them, you know that they’re going to go to that intermission now. Well, with two periods played, Pounder, your thoughts. New York’s been dominant through two periods of play, James. Let’s bring it home.” Croch’s got it into offensive territory. Plays it across. The Penguins scoop it up along the boards along the side. Here they come through the neutral zone. Moose to Shay. It’s because he gets to the top of his crease. He cuts down his ink. They score. And that’s backto back goals. Well, nothing like switching momentum and putting your opponent on their heels and getting two in a row. Back to back. Here they come. Smart play by the shooter here. The presence of mind to recognize that there’s a lot of traffic and put it to the net. And the goalender, I mean, he can’t see this, but James, we can’t see where it is with all of these bodies net front. And it finds the back of the net. New York’s offense continues to shine here in this third period. Well, this has got to be a dream for a coach. You got to find a way to just reset your composure. The Rangers send their man advantage in once more. They haven’t scored on the power play yet, but they have another opportunity. The key to this one, gain possession so they can set up. Here’s a shot. Turns it away. It might along the boards and just like that comes up with the puck. Great little flick of the stick. Pittsburgh’s top possessional under man comes up with a stop. Luci’s been playing with his head up all night long here. James, he doesn’t have one, he doesn’t have two, he has three goals for the hattick in this game so far. And if you have a look back at some of them, I mean, he has just been lights out in and around the net, changing the angle of his shot. And he’s leaving the goalender guessing. [Applause] They got a face off coming up here in the offensive end. And the goalender looks fatigued, James. So the best medicine right now for them is to find a way to put the puck to the net. Solid hit on the play and that knocks the puck off his stick. Conerance crossed the line and gained the zone. There’s a stop with the blocker by Cherry. Jerkin has been making it look easy out there tonight, James. Multiple big saves in this game and it’s due in large part to his positioning. I mean, he’s got real nice balance. He’s challenging the shooter and he’s redirecting rebounds. He’s doing it all for his team tonight. Now, they just got to get the W. The Rangers have built themselves a sizable lead here early in this third period. Kyle’s won the draw. They’ll look to set up. Stops. Slides it back to the blue line. Quick shot. Oh, what a great close save on the play. Trojack’s been patting the stats tonight and it’s all been earned. I mean, when that puck is on his stick, he is creating both time and space. And when he’s going to the net, sticks on the ice. The game’s all about habits in the offensive zone. And he’s showing all of them right now. The Rangers have certainly subscribed to the quantity theory offensively tonight. They lead it and have been busier in the offensive zone. Folks want Crosby’s a big draw on their own end battling for it along the board. Pittsburgh’s got a hold of it against the wall. The Penguins go across the line and into the offensive end. Look at that head. Maybe try to wear down the opponents here. And the puck’s knocked loose. One-on-one with the goalender. Spectacular save right there. Wow. Unbelievable. I mean, it was all but in and he steals it because of that last ditch attempt to find the block. Just incredible save. James dialed in tonight here. James, he’s a lifeline for his team right now. I mean, he’s shimmy and shaking in his crease. I mean, the desperation saves he’s had to make to keep the puck out of the net. He’s going to need a rest here. I mean, look at him breathing heavy. Pent over to Raquel and he’s pulled over to the ice and loses the puck. Picked off by Hayes. Game management is everything and you have to be aware of exactly what that is and you can’t take risks in a game where you’re leading. You have to find a way to protect the lead. Makes the save. Carson’s taking the puck behind his net. Here’s a short pass to Susi. Takes a shot. Scores. Well, that’s number two pounder. Yeah, he’s been all over the puck tonight. He’s feeling it. He’s confident. You got to believe he’s going to be looking for the hattie. Weight players train in the stick technology are a reason why a shot like this gets off so quickly, James. Absolutely incredible speed, but the amount of time to get it off the stick, that’s the real deal breakaker. New York’s been on a roll offensively tonight. Lots of chances and they lead it late in this third and they win that draw center. Pass right back. There’s another for the hit parade. New York’s got the puck against the half wall. Sometimes when you lose the puck, it’s a product of trying to do too much. Sometimes keeping it simple is more effective. Shuts him down. The Rangers scheme control the puck against the wall. Oh, what a save. He stopped him. Wow. Well, that’s an intangible effort that you can’t teach, James. That’s all about desperation and the will to stop that puff. Well, the bench erupts with that one. And you know why, James? Because he is telling his team, “Listen, I’ve bent, but I have not broken, and neither have you. So, let’s get going here. The Rangers once again send out their power play unit. Power plays, more time on the ice, the ability to get that puck moving. These players know exactly what they’re doing. They work on it in practice. spoke to some of them earlier today at the pregame and they talked about the execution and the precision in particular with their puck movement. But you play the game differently depending on the situation and when you’re up, you got to know it and you got to game manage and you got to puck manage that turnover. Coach isn’t going to like that one at all. A shot and they score. Yeah. And this one will all but seal the deal, James. A real insurance marker and a game well fought and a win well earned. That’s a strong effort all the way around. Stingy defensively at the end of the game and they’re able to get that empty net and it’s a D minutes here. James, it should seal the deal. New York’s coaches have to be pleased with what they’ve seen tonight. No shortage of scoring opportunities and no shortage of goals. And now he angles it across to McCordi. There’s a shot.
